There Used to Be a Lake Here Once (April, 2024)
I wrote this poetry collection when I was in college and it ended up getting acquired by the Writers Workshop, Kolkata- an Indian independent press that has published, among others, the works of Ruskin Bond, Vikram Seth, Kamala Das, Nissim Ezekiel and AK Ramanujan.
I grew up in Kolkata in the mid 2010s, whilst juggling multiple identities- Bengali girl child, queer teen brought up under a Catholic school system, later, a transgender enby poet and writer reconciling my personal and political worlds through academia and writing. This chapbook, divided into two sections, contains twenty-six poems on Bengali trans queer coming-of-age. I wrote it for the same reason I write all my stories: in the hopes that younger queer and trans desi youths can take some heart, and know they aren't as alone as I felt when I was a kid– even if the versions of India we have lived through are quite different, for better and for worse.
Anyway, cheesy stuff over. My author copies just arrived today and well, aren't they simply beautiful? Apparently, there will be more different colour editions. Which one do you like best?

Reading Jhumpa Lahiri’s “The Namesake” was a riveting, almost delicate business for me. At several times I felt so attacked by the author that I was tempted to put the book down, yet the fragile personas of the characters drew me on past the pages.
It is a book from my Australian school’s English novel list. And so is “Wuthering Heights” or “Jane Eyre”. I read those with equitable interest, overanalysing every sentence, theme and character. I read background books, tried Milton’s “Paradise Lost”, Emily Brontë’s poems, Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice”, all about the Brontë sisters’ household. I stormed through shelves in my university library, took refuge to the bedroom for reading up to late hours; I worked in a fever dream. The sheer excitement of navigating my way past great pieces of literature felt rewarding in itself. It was a foreign experience; as I had learned, along with my Bangladeshi peers, to read what was on the syllabus, without questioning what was within.
It all felt great, until I hit home.
All the above mentioned are written by individuals with whom I do not share my skin tone, my food habits or my accent. Therefore I “explore” them but not find myself within. Like an impartial observer, I rate this or that.
But Jhumpa Lahiri’s “Gogol” would not let me do that. His parents are Bengali, just like me. He is an American-Indian, just like I have a hyphen between my nationality too: Australian-Bangladeshi. And he is frivolous, which with great pains I will admit being too. His faults feel mine. Or at least, he annoys me, gets under my skin.
The novel opens with his birth and early childhood. He grows up indifferent to his ethnicity, preferring English, beef and high school parties over embracing Bengali, white rice and being involved in the culture he has a rightful share in. His family gives in too. I find myself enraged at their conduct, feeling grateful I came to Australia at a ripe age of sixteen- I am incapable of deserting my roots now. Then again, I discover that I have the same mentality as a middle-aged desi aunty, how shameful is that! Shouldn’t I be open-minded, and accept that Gogol has to cope with the country he was born in, rather than the one he has no attachment to?
Gogol’s mental stigma about his name is another side to his character that appears immature to me. He hates sharing a name with a Russian author, whom he finds demented than inspiring. He never sets to find out why his father Ashoke named him after his favourite Nikolai Gogol. It is a story he seeks out too late, a few weeks before Ashoke’s sudden death. He changes to “Nikhil”, even though he mentally admits no one, except he himself, has ever pestered him for the name he was born with.
Even though it isn’t directly pronounced, Gogol (now Nikhil) always tries to break free of Bengali “norms” and his parents’ expectations, unapologetically. This is reflected in his numerous love affairs with various women. But his attention is always fleeting. He’d rather be on holiday with his girlfriend’s “elegant” parents than his own. How does he fail to notice, as I do as a reader, that he indeed seeks out the idea of “settling down” in his partners in a very Bengali way, but miserably fails every time?
Something about his romantic life scares me. Will I, as a hyphenated Bengali girl, experience the same troubles as him? Will complying with my tradition feel unnatural to me some day too? As I read past Moushumi’s Parisian cigarettes and the descriptions of fine wine, do I not feel tempted? To go ahead, break the “rules” and enjoy “life”, as they say it?
And the lonesome, tired corner of my soul says that thousands of kids have broken the rules, there are no more to be newly broken. Do they really enjoy life like a one-night-stand? I highly doubt so.
As my mother’s words ring in my ears, “Love, keep your romantic life simple, so you’ll get time to do great things in life itself!”
Yet, I feel bitter as Gogol does not utter a single word of regret as the novel comes to an end. It is almost as if I am his mother, waiting to box his ears and set him right. But he wouldn’t admit that he was wrong, all his life.

So, I finally watched Disney's "Wish". Here's my review on it:
Positive aspects
1. I loved Asha's appearance and her name. She does have very pretty hair; whenever it was blowing in the wind, it gave me a feeling of some sort of refreshment (and reminded me of Pocahontas' hair). And her name? Well, it means "hope" in Bengali (my mother tongue) . I don't know where the name used in the movie originated from, but if it really means "hope", that makes it really meaningful and significant for the main protagonist. By the way, "Asha" is written as "আশা" in Bengali!
Tumblr media
2. Movie setting: This movie was set around Mediterranean sea which was a delight to watch since it is enriched with a plenty of cultural variations.
Tumblr media
3. Art style: The art style was real beautiful; I loved their using of vibrant colors and watercolor painting effects. If you've been following me for a long time, you may have already guessed that I am a huge fan of using vibrant colors (just like Rapunzel)!
Tumblr media
4. Song: I wrote "song", 'cause I only enjoyed one song from it which is "This wish".
Negative aspects:
1. The story was pretty mediocre. Although they started it with a great potential, they messed at wrapping it up.
Tumblr media
2. Story arcs of both the heroin and the villain were terribly weak. It felt like they themselves weren't even sure WHAT were they doing, WHY were they doing. It felt, somehow 'forced' for the sake of dragging their poor story to a conclusion.
Tumblr media
3. Poor execution of easter eggs. I mean, seriously? If the entire plot was about making one's wishes all by oneself then what's the point of giving Asha the magic wand at the end? Just to reminisce Cinderella's fairy godmother? But didn't it ruin the actual story?
Tumblr media
4. Bad jokes: I guess this movie's target audience were three years old kids, otherwise why all the comic reliefs felt so cliched and forced?
Tumblr media
To wrap it up, it was a pretty mediocre movie. I enjoy every other movies of Disney's modern era from "Tangled" to "Strange World" (it was not that bad, to be honest). I enjoyed "Raya and the last dragon", it broke me emotionally with it's father-daughter storyline (just like Pixar's "Onwards" with Father-son storyline). I enjoyed Pixar's "Elemental", and "Turning Red". These movies represented asian cultures accurately, I watched them multiple times.
Tumblr media
But, in case of Wish, I couldn't relate to the characters, I couldn't enjoy the story. It was indeed a very forgettable movie.

Hey Sam!! I have a question about Ro's name. I remember back when I read your original sims 4 inheritance story his name was Rowan, but somewhere along the way it became Ro'onui (which I love btw) and I was just wondering what made you change it/why/when! Love your story/art btw 💖 also apologies if you've already answered this and I just couldn't find it 😭
I love this question! Also thank you!!!!!
This got long so I'm putting it under here, haha sorry in advance
Ro is Tahitian and black on his father's side--Falemalu, his surname, and Ro'onui, his forename, are both Tahitian in origin.
In the course of the "first draft" of Inheritance, Ro explains that he'd chosen to go by Rowan for a long time because it was easier for people to pronounce. This part of his backstory will still be true in the final iteration, but it will be something Ro has already grappled with sometime in his twenties, rather than in the course of the story. It comes up in dialogue though, somewhere in Book 2 or 3. I believe that by the time we meet Ro'onui in Inheritance, he will have taken back ownership of his name. Such is the nature of re-writes and editing! Our characters become clearer to us.
My best friend growing up went by a shortened version of her name, a common nickname white people could pronounce. Her full name, which her parents and Bengali friends all called her, wasn't something she bothered to teach everyone. I watched her hate her name, love it, hate it again, feel nothing for it, love it once more.
Ultimately, the path Ro'onui took with his name was likely similar to my friend's, but I am an outsider to his culture, doing the best I can to write a believable man on a hero's journey. I have to ask myself what was likely for someone like him--I know, from firsthand experience with someone I loved, how hard it was for a brown kid with a long name to try to fit in with everyone else in the early 2000's. For the record, in case anyone reading along doesn't know, his name is pronounced ROH-OH-NOO-EE, with a slightly more pronounced stop between ROH and OH, where the special apostrophe (called an 'eta in Tahitian and an 'okina in Hawaiian) is located.
Also, please enjoy the notion that Ro chose "Rowan" as his name in like, the seventh grade, roughly in 2002, because he thought it was cool and edgy (he was an emo kid, the kind with the hair in front of one eye and a studded belt and those parachute pants with all the straps hanging off of them).

I haath been sent from beyond to enquire as to what you actually do on Mahalaya...
(Definitely not a bangali wanting you to infodump)
So before I go into what I MYSELF do in mahalaya, I will pretext it by giving some context into what mahalaya actually is.
So. What is mahalaya?
Mahalaya is typically known as the beginning of devipaksha. These "pakshas" Are usually demarcated by the movements of the moon. One fortnight from one full moon to the next is one "paksha". This one is particularly known as " Devipaksha " Because the Mythological story goes as follows(which we grew up listening to from our grandpas)
So when the earth was created, it was believed to be a huge great sea and Vishnu laid at its depths, deep in sleep. Then from his earlobe emerged two demons, madhu and kaitav who wreaked havoc on earth. Lord brahma emerged from vishnu's navel and pleaded the Lord to wake and destroy the evils. After months of meditation, vishnu woke finally. What followed was a war over 5000 years and at the end, when vishnu was exhausted and the demons still remained, he pleaded to Goddess Adishakti who emerged and charmed the demons with her beauty. Vishnu took the chance and killed the demons. Mahalaya is believed to be the day The devi helped in this destruction of evil, so the following fourteen days are said to be "Devi" Paksha.
Now, there's another side of this story. To us bengalis, mahalaya is also believed to be the time devi parvati comes back to her father's house with all her children. Parvati is considered as "barir meye" (Daughter of the house) by almost all bengalis, so pujo is technically a celebration of parvati's homecoming.
To the general kolkata-citizens however; mahalaya implies pujos are close, so celebrations and planning have to be started soon;)
SO, WHAT DO PEOPLE DO IN MAHALAYA?
If one fine day in october, you see your bengali friend wake up at 4am and go up to the terrace; check the dates. Cause it might be mahalaya.
To be completely honest here, not much happens on mahalaya. But it's the time when the clouds are clear, the sun is red in the horizon and Our own daughter is coming back home. Which is why the traditional way of celebrating mahalaya iss waking up when there are still twinkling stars in the sky and watch sunrise. this is usually followed by listening to agomoni songs (agomon=arrival in bengali) and mahalaya recited by one legendary man. We have all listened to the exact same version of mahalaya over the years. My grandpa listened to it as a kid, my father listened to it as a kid, and i myself listen to it every year now. It's mahalaya recited by birendra kishore bhodro. There's a certain spirituality in listening to the fables of destruction of evil by a supreme power while watching the red sun lick the skies and the morning light come to being. for any of you interested, here's the link:
youtube
Anyway, there are also TV shows during mahalaya, that show the stories behind the various forms of durga that is worshipped all over bengal in sort of a theatrical manner. As far as i remember, there are 108 forms, all of the same goddess, banishing different evils.
To sum it up, mahalaya for us(or atleast me) is a day to get slightly in contact with the spiritual side of the pujos that follow. Because in the hocus-pocus of all the fun and plans that usually signify pujo, it's usually extremely easy to lose track of what it is actually all about-the victory of good over evil, and ceelbrating women-power through femininity.

River Sing Me Home by Eleanor Shearer
The master of the Providence plantation in Barbados gathers his slaves and announces the king has decreed an end to slavery. As of the following day, the Emancipation Act of 1834 will come into effect. The cries of joy fall silent when he announces that they are no longer his slaves; they are now his apprentices. No one can leave. They must work for him for another six years. Freedom is just another name for the life they have always lived. So Rachel runs.
Away from Providence, she begins a desperate search to find her children - the five who survived birth and were sold. Are any of them still alive? Rachel has to know. The grueling, dangerous journey takes her from Barbados then, by river, deep into the forest of British Guiana and finally across the sea to Trinidad. She is driven on by the certainty that a mother cannot be truly free without knowing what has become of her children, even if the answer is more than she can bear. These are the stories of Mary Grace, Micah, Thomas Augustus, Cherry Jane and Mercy. But above all this is the story of Rachel and the extraordinary lengths to which a mother will go to find her children...and her freedom.
The Love Match by Priyanka Taslim
Zahra Khan is basically Bangladeshi royalty, but being a princess doesn’t pay the bills in Paterson, New Jersey. While Zahra’s plans for financial security this summer involve working long hours at Chai Ho and saving up for college writing courses, Amma is convinced that all Zahra needs is a “good match,” Jane Austen-style.
Enter Harun Emon, who’s wealthy, devastatingly handsome, and... aloof. As soon as Zahra meets him, she knows it’s a bad match. It’s nothing like the connection she has with Nayim Aktar, the new dishwasher at the tea shop, who just gets Zahra in a way no one has before.
So, when Zahra finds out that Harun is just as uninterested in this match as she is, they decide to slowly sabotage their parents’ plans. And for once in Zahra’s life, she can have her rossomalai and eat it: “dating” Harun and keeping Amma happy while catching real feelings for Nayim.
But life - and boys - can be more complicated than Zahra realizes. With her feelings all mixed up, Zahra discovers that sometimes being a good Bengali kid can be a royal pain.

oops i thought i had haha well hi again!
lol that’s why i can’t listen to regular music, i get distracted singing along! video game soundtracks are good too they’re def designed to make you zone out and focus on what you’re doing. pfff i can’t read or write with music either, unless it’s lofi. also weirdly i love boba shop asmr of them making drinks.
ooo i like a lot of music! i listen to a lot of rock, alt rock, lot of 90s singer/songwriter, but i’m also a huge kpop stan so i listen to a lot of that. big david bowie fan, norah jones, but also bts, txt, stray kids, and a bunch of others. what about you?
ooo that’s so interesting, i’m sending holiday pal messages to another person too and she’s also indian! i love how much im learning about your holiday celebrations! i know a little bit about Kali but not much. what do u like best about her?? and what do u do to celebrate? that sounds so cool! i wish we had festivals for goddesses! for christmas we do a lot of decorating, baking, watching christmas films, making cozy foods, lots of chocolate, of course gifts we open on christmas morning. we’re always gifted new pajamas that we’re supposed to open on christmas eve, but me and my sister really wanted to wear them leading up to christmas so my mom let us open them early this year haha.
does it get cold where u live? 🌸❄️
Hello friend!
Ahh, I never realised that about video game music, it actually makes a lot of sense? I need to try it out. Maybe it can be my secret weapon because I desperately need one right now. 😭 ASMR is so relaxing to me, it really puts me at ease, so I totally understand where you're coming from.
I used to(still) have a Queen sideblog, and I religiously listened to Queen music for quite some time, and I got introduced to a lot of rock music back then. But I'm a pop girlie at heart, I think, even though I am not choosey about what I listen to. I remember watching BTS music videos back in 2017- there's a song called Save Me, right? There are unreal - the choreography and the music, the song still plays in my ears. Absolutely breathtaking.
So, there's this one fact about her, if you've seen any of her pictures, you'll see she has her tongue out, and there's Lord Shiva underneath her feet. Lord Shiva, who's supposed to be her husband. I always used to wonder why and then I learned that she went on a rampage killing demons ("rakshasa"). She was causing so much bloodshed, but the other gods didn't know how to stop her, so they asked Lord Shiva to intervene. He lay down on the battlefield, and she was so blinded with rage that she didn't notice and stepped on him. And took out her tongue as an expression of "Oops" (it's a gesture that is quite commonplace here, but it might not be elsewhere). So that's the story. She is actually a form of Goddess Parvati, and the reason I like her so much is she represents to me, the inherent strength of being a woman. We are not all dainty and pretty, there's a side to us that's not to be messed with. She's also dark skinned, and there's a lot of colorism that happens in India (read:most of the other goddesses are portrayed as fair). Hence, I have always looked up to her.
She's so revered (you could say for the wrong reasons in this example) that robbers used to pray to her to not get caught. There's something about violent men praying to a Goddess for mercy that is kind of intriguing and ironic. The days leading up to it, have Bhoot Chaturdashi ( which is kind of like the Bengali Halloween) where we light fourteen diyas and place them all around our houses to ward off evil spirits that we believe roam freely that night. We personally don't celebrate Kali Pujo at our house (it's a big ceremony and needs people and space) but there are a lot of other idols that are put up around the city and we visit them. Also it coincides with Diwali, so there's a lot of lights and fireworks as well even though our family doesn't burst firecrackers anymore.
Sorry it got so long 😭 Thank you for showing interest, I really appreciate it a lot. ❤️
Your Christmas Pyjamas tradition sounds so cute! What all do you bake? What's your fave thing to bake? Have you put up your tree yet? What Christmas movie is your favourite to watch? I have lots of questions!
It doesn't snow here, of course, but it can get quite chilly. One winter, it went down to 5 degrees Celsius. How cold does it get where you live? Does it snow?
