Black Castor Oil, especially its Jamaican and Haitian varieties, has long been celebrated for its versatility in beauty and skincare. Known for its rich concentration of fatty acids, particularly ricinoleic acid, this natural oil offers many benefits ranging from deep hydration to anti-inflammatory effects. Whether you want to maintain youthful skin, reduce acne, or minimize scars and stretch marks, Black Castor Oil is a powerhouse ingredient. However, while its benefits are impressive, it’s important to use it correctly and with precautions to avoid potential adverse reactions. This article explores the myriad ways Black Castor Oil can enhance skin health and the precautions necessary to ensure safe use. I. How Black Castor Oil Moisturizes and Hydrates Skin? Black castor oil, particularly Jamaican or Haitian varieties, is highly regarded for its intense moisturizing and hydrating properties, making it an effective ingredient for skin care. This oil stands out due to its rich content of ricinoleic acid, which is a fatty acid known to deeply penetrate the skin, locking in moisture and creating a protective barrier against environmental stressors. - Deep Hydration and Moisturization: Black castor oil is a humectant, meaning it can attract moisture from the air to the skin. This property makes it particularly effective in hydrating the skin, as it not only provides moisture but also helps retain it. By forming a barrier on the skin's surface, it prevents water loss, ensuring long-lasting hydration. This is especially beneficial for individuals with dry or flaky skin. - Improved Skin Elasticity and Smoothness: The high content of fatty acids in black castor oil, including omega-6 and omega-9, stimulates collagen production, which is essential for maintaining skin elasticity and firmness. This contributes to smoother skin and a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, making it a popular choice for anti-aging skincare routines. - Soothing and Healing Properties: In addition to its moisturizing benefits, black castor oil has anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe irritated or inflamed skin. It is often used to treat conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, as its nourishing fatty acids help calm and repair damaged skin barriers. - Protection Against Environmental Damage: As a natural antioxidant, black castor oil protects the skin from harmful environmental factors, such as pollution and UV rays. This helps prevent oxidative stress, which can lead to premature aging and skin damage. By incorporating black castor oil into a regular skincare routine, you can bolster the skin’s defenses against these damaging elements. - Suitable for Various Skin Types: While black castor oil is especially beneficial for dry skin due to its intense hydration, it is also suitable for oily and combination skin types. Its low comedogenic rating means it does not clog pores, reducing the risk of breakouts while delivering its hydrating benefits. This versatility makes it a well-rounded option for people with varying skincare needs. In summary, black castor oil offers a wide array of skin benefits through its hydrating, soothing, and protective properties. Its ability to deeply moisturize while promoting skin elasticity and healing makes it a powerful addition to any skincare routine. II. How Black Castor Oil Soothes Irritated or Inflamed Skin? Black castor oil, particularly Jamaican and Haitian varieties, has significant anti-inflammatory properties that make it a powerful remedy for soothing irritated or inflamed skin. The oil’s main active component, ricinoleic acid, plays a crucial role in reducing inflammation, making it beneficial for conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis. - Anti-inflammatory Effects: Ricinoleic acid, which makes up the majority of black castor oil's fatty acids, helps alleviate inflammation by reducing the production of certain compounds that trigger swelling and redness in the skin. This property allows the oil to calm irritated areas, reducing discomfort and promoting healing. It is particularly effective in soothing conditions such as acne, rosacea, and even sunburn. - Calming Redness and Itching: Black castor oil not only reduces visible redness but also soothes itching, which often accompanies inflamed skin. Its thick consistency helps to create a protective barrier on the skin, locking in moisture and allowing the skin’s natural healing processes to take place more effectively. This barrier also shields the skin from environmental irritants, preventing further damage. - Hydrating and Nourishing the Skin: Irritated skin often becomes dry and flaky, which exacerbates the discomfort. Black castor oil’s hydrating properties provide deep moisturization that softens the skin and promotes healing. The fatty acids in the oil penetrate deep into the skin, restoring moisture and preventing water loss, which helps maintain the skin's natural barrier. - Gentle on Sensitive Skin: Because of its natural composition, black castor oil is gentle enough to be used on sensitive skin types. It provides the nutrients needed to support the skin’s healing process without causing further irritation. Additionally, its antioxidant properties help neutralize free radicals, reducing oxidative stress, which is often a contributing factor in inflamed skin conditions. Incorporating black castor oil into your skincare routine can offer both immediate relief from irritation and long-term benefits, such as improved skin texture and resilience against future flare-ups. III. How Black Castor Oil Promotes Youthful Skin (Anti-Aging)? Black castor oil is a natural powerhouse when it comes to maintaining youthful-looking skin. Its rich composition of fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamin E plays a vital role in combating signs of aging such as fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. - Deep Hydration for Firm Skin: One of the primary ways black castor oil helps keep your skin looking youthful is through its ability to deeply moisturize. It acts as an emollient, creating a barrier on the skin that locks in moisture and prevents dehydration. As your skin stays hydrated, it maintains its elasticity and firmness, both of which are essential for a youthful appearance. The oil’s thick consistency also smooths out fine lines, making them less visible. - Antioxidant Protection Against Free Radicals: Black castor oil is packed with antioxidants, which play a crucial role in neutralizing free radicals—unstable molecules that damage skin cells and accelerate the aging process. By reducing oxidative stress on the skin, these antioxidants prevent the breakdown of collagen and elastin, two proteins responsible for skin firmness and elasticity. - Stimulating Collagen Production: Ricinoleic acid, a key component of black castor oil, stimulates collagen production. Collagen is essential for maintaining the structure and plumpness of the skin. Over time, the natural production of collagen decreases, leading to sagging skin and wrinkles. By using black castor oil, you can promote collagen synthesis, helping your skin maintain its youthful texture. - Reducing Wrinkles and Fine Lines: The moisturizing and regenerative properties of black castor oil help in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. When applied regularly, the oil nourishes and replenishes the skin, leading to a smoother texture and a more radiant complexion. This not only minimizes existing wrinkles but also prevents the formation of new ones. Incorporating black castor oil into your skincare routine offers long-term anti-aging benefits by hydrating, protecting, and strengthening the skin, ensuring that it remains youthful and vibrant for years to come. IV. How Does Black Castor Oil Helps in the Treatment of Acne? Black castor oil is becoming an increasingly popular natural remedy for acne due to its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and moisturizing properties. Here's how it works effectively for acne-prone skin: - Antibacterial Properties: One of the key reasons black castor oil is effective against acne is its ability to kill acne-causing bacteria. The ricinoleic acid found in the oil has potent antibacterial properties that help clear out bacteria from the skin, reducing the likelihood of breakouts and infections. This makes it particularly beneficial for those suffering from inflamed or infected acne. - Anti-inflammatory Effects: Acne is often accompanied by redness, swelling, and inflammation. The anti-inflammatory properties of black castor oil can help reduce these symptoms, soothing the skin and promoting faster healing of acne lesions. The oil’s ability to calm irritated skin makes it a suitable remedy for individuals dealing with conditions like cystic acne. - Balancing Sebum Production: Unlike many commercial acne treatments that dry out the skin, which can cause the body to overproduce sebum (leading to more acne), black castor oil helps regulate oil production without causing dryness. This balance in sebum production helps prevent clogged pores, one of the main culprits of acne development. - Deep Moisturization Without Clogging Pores: Although black castor oil is thick, it does not clog pores, making it suitable for oily and acne-prone skin types. Its ability to lock in moisture while allowing the skin to breathe ensures that acne is treated without causing further irritation or dryness. This deep hydration supports the skin’s natural barrier, keeping it healthy and resilient. Regular application of black castor oil, especially when used in combination with steam treatments to open the pores, can significantly reduce acne and improve the overall texture and health of the skin. V. How Black Castor Oil Reduces Scars and Stretch Marks? Black castor oil is highly effective in reducing the appearance of scars and stretch marks due to its unique combination of nourishing and regenerative properties. Here's how it works: - Promotes Skin Regeneration: Black castor oil is rich in ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid that deeply penetrates the skin and encourages the growth of new skin cells. This helps to repair damaged skin and smooth out scars and stretch marks over time. The oil’s ability to stimulate collagen production further aids in regenerating the skin, leading to a more even skin tone. - Improves Skin Elasticity: Stretch marks often result from the skin stretching rapidly, such as during pregnancy or weight changes. Black castor oil is loaded with omega-6 and omega-9 fatty acids, which improve skin elasticity and help prevent the formation of new stretch marks while minimizing the appearance of existing ones. Vitamin E in the oil further supports the elasticity of the skin, making it more resilient. - Moisturizes and Softens Skin: One of the reasons scars and stretch marks appear prominent is due to dryness. Black castor oil is a powerful moisturizer that hydrates and softens the skin. Its thick consistency creates a protective barrier that locks in moisture, keeping the skin supple and reducing the visibility of scars and stretch marks over time. - Fades Hyperpigmentation: Many scars and stretch marks are associated with hyperpigmentation, where the skin darkens in the affected areas. Black castor oil contains vitamin E and antioxidants that help reduce hyperpigmentation by promoting an even skin tone. Regular use helps lighten these darkened areas, gradually improving the overall appearance of the skin. By consistently applying black castor oil, either alone or mixed with other natural ingredients like aloe vera or coconut oil, you can see a noticeable improvement in both the texture and color of scars and stretch marks. This natural remedy provides long-term benefits without harsh chemicals. VI. Recipe to Cleanse Skin of Impurities with Black Castor Oil: Using Black Castor Oil for skin cleansing is a powerful way to remove impurities, dirt, and excess oils from your skin while keeping it hydrated and nourished. Here is an effective recipe and method to use black castor oil as a deep cleanser: -Ingredients: 1 tablespoon of Black Castor Oil (rich in ricinoleic acid for deep cleansing). 1 tablespoon of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (lightens the thickness of castor oil and adds additional nourishment). 5-6 drops of Lavender Essential Oil (optional, for its calming and antiseptic properties). -Steps: 1. Mix the Oils: Combine the black castor oil, extra virgin olive oil, and lavender essential oil in a clean glass jar. Shake or stir the mixture until the ingredients are well blended. 2. Apply to Face: Pour a small amount (about a teaspoon) into your palm, rub your hands together, and gently massage the oil into your dry face using circular motions. Focus on areas with impurities, makeup, or excessive oil. 3. Steam the Skin: Soak a clean washcloth in hot water, wring out the excess, and place the warm cloth over your face. Allow the steam to open your pores and let the oils penetrate deeper for about 1-2 minutes. 4. Wipe Off: Gently wipe away the oil, dirt, and makeup using the washcloth. Rinse the washcloth and repeat the process if necessary, ensuring your skin is completely clean. 5. Rinse and Moisturize: Finally, splash your face with cool water to close your pores and pat dry with a towel. You can follow up with a light moisturizer or another drop of black castor oil to lock in hydration. This cleansing routine is not only effective in removing impurities but also helps balance sebum production, making it suitable for both dry and oily skin types. Regular use can leave your skin clean, hydrated, and glowing. VII. Precautions When Using Black Castor Oil: While Black Castor Oil (especially Jamaican Black Castor Oil) is celebrated for its many skincare and haircare benefits, there are essential precautions to consider for safe and effective use. - Patch Test for Allergies: Before applying Black Castor Oil extensively on your skin or hair, always perform a patch test. Apply a small amount of the oil to a discreet area, like the inner arm, and wait 24 hours. This will help identify any allergic reactions such as redness, itching, or irritation. This is particularly important if you have sensitive skin. - Avoid Eye Contact: When using Black Castor Oil on your face, avoid applying it near the eyes. If the oil accidentally gets into your eyes, it can cause discomfort, irritation, or even blurred vision. Rinse immediately with water if this happens. - Consultation for Pregnant Women: Pregnant women should consult their healthcare provider before using Black Castor Oil. Although it is safe for topical use, ingesting castor oil can induce labor and should be avoided during pregnancy. - Proper Application Amount: Black Castor Oil is thick and concentrated, so a little goes a long way. Over-application can lead to clogged pores or an overly greasy appearance. Start with a small amount and adjust as needed. This also applies when using it on the scalp or hair, as excessive use can make hair feel heavy. - Interactions with Medications: If you are taking medications, especially for skin conditions, consult your doctor before using Black Castor Oil. While it is natural, it may interact with certain prescriptions, affecting their efficacy. - Proper Storage: To maintain its effectiveness, store Black Castor Oil in a cool, dark place. Heat and light can cause the oil to degrade, reducing its potency and causing it to spoil. Always discard the oil if it starts to smell rancid. By following these precautions, you can safely enjoy the many benefits of Black Castor Oil for both skin and hair without adverse effects. Conclusion: Incorporating Black Castor Oil into your skincare routine can provide profound benefits, from moisturizing and protecting the skin to addressing concerns such as inflammation, acne, and stretch marks. Its ability to hydrate deeply, stimulate collagen production, and provide antioxidant protection makes it a valuable addition to any skincare regimen. However, as with any natural remedy, it's essential to use Black Castor Oil with care conducting patch tests, moderating applications, and consulting with healthcare professionals if necessary. By following these precautions, you can fully harness the skin-enhancing properties of Black Castor Oil while avoiding any unwanted side effects.

Castor oil is a vegetable oil derived from the seeds of the castor plant (Ricinus communis). This makes castor oil a beneficial ingredient not only for hair but also for skin and overall health.
Types of Castor Oil
Cold-Pressed Castor Oil: Extracted without heat, preserving the oil's natural properties and nutrients. It is considered the purest form and is ideal for hair and skin applications.
Jamaican Black Castor Oil: Made by roasting the castor seeds before extraction, resulting in a darker, more viscous oil. It is particularly popular for hair growth and scalp health.
Hydrogenated Castor Oil: A solidified form of castor oil, commonly used in cosmetics and personal care products.
Benefits of Castor Hair Oil
Promotes Hair Growth
Castor oil is renowned for its ability to stimulate hair growth. The high concentration of ricinoleic acid helps increase blood circulation to the scalp, providing the necessary nutrients and oxygen to hair follicles. This promotes healthy hair growth and can help reduce hair loss.
Strengthens Hair
The fatty acids in castor oil, particularly omega-6 and omega-9, nourish and strengthen hair strands, reducing breakage and split ends. Regular use of castor oil can lead to thicker, stronger hair over time.
Moisturizes and Conditions
Castor oil's emollient properties make it an excellent natural conditioner. It penetrates deep into the hair shaft, providing intense moisture and leaving hair soft, shiny, and manageable. It also helps to lock in moisture, preventing dryness and frizz.
Treats Scalp Conditions
The antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of castor oil make it effective in treating scalp conditions such as dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, and scalp infections. It soothes irritation and reduces inflammation, promoting a healthier scalp environment.
Enhances Shine
Castor oil imparts a natural shine to the hair, enhancing its overall appearance. It smooths the hair cuticle, reflecting light and giving hair a glossy, polished look.
How to Use Castor Oil for Hair
Scalp Treatment
Preparation: Warm a small amount of castor oil by placing the bottle in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes.
Application: Part your hair into sections and apply the warm oil directly to your scalp using your fingertips. Massage gently in circular motions to stimulate blood flow.
Duration: Leave the oil on for at least 30 minutes, or overnight for a more intensive treatment. Cover your hair with a shower cap to prevent staining your pillow.
Rinse: Shampoo your hair thoroughly to remove the oil. You may need to shampoo twice to ensure all residue is gone.
Hair Mask
Ingredients: Mix castor oil with other beneficial oils such as coconut oil, olive oil, or argan oil. You can also add essential oils like lavender or rosemary for added benefits.
Application: Apply the mixture to your scalp and hair, focusing on the ends. Comb through to ensure even distribution.
Duration: Leave the mask on for at least 30 minutes, or up to an hour for deeper conditioning.
Rinse: Wash your hair thoroughly with shampoo and condition as usual.
Leave-In Conditioner
Preparation: Mix a few drops of castor oil with a lightweight carrier oil like jojoba or almond oil to reduce its viscosity.
Application: Apply the mixture sparingly to the ends of your hair to seal in moisture and prevent split ends.
Styling: Style your hair as usual. The oil will add shine and reduce frizz without weighing your hair down.
Hot Oil Treatment
Preparation: Heat castor oil and a carrier oil (such as coconut or olive oil) in a microwave-safe bowl for a few seconds until warm.
Application: Apply the warm oil mixture to your scalp and hair, massaging gently.
Duration: Cover your hair with a shower cap and wrap it in a warm towel. Leave the treatment on for 30 minutes to an hour.
Rinse: Shampoo and condition your hair thoroughly to remove the oil.
Tips for Maximizing Castor Oil Benefits
Consistency is Key
Regular use of castor oil is essential to see noticeable improvements in hair health. Incorporate it into your weekly hair care routine for the best results.
Combine with Other Oils
While castor oil is highly beneficial on its own, combining it with other oils can enhance its effects. Coconut oil, olive oil, and argan oil are excellent companions, providing additional nourishment and improving the oil's spreadability.
Use Heat
Applying heat to your castor oil treatment can help to open the hair cuticles, allowing the oil to penetrate deeper into the hair shaft. Use a warm towel or a heat cap to maximize the treatment's effectiveness.
Be Patient
Hair growth and repair take time. It may take several weeks or even months of consistent use to see significant results. Be patient and persistent in your application.
Patch Test
Before using castor oil extensively, perform a patch test to ensure you don't have an allergic reaction. Apply a small amount of oil to your inner arm and wait 24 hours to check for any signs of irritation.
Avoid Overuse
While castor oil is beneficial, overusing it can lead to product buildup and potentially clog hair follicles. Use it in moderation and ensure you thoroughly cleanse your hair after each treatment.
Addressing Common Hair Concerns with Castor Oil
Hair Loss
Castor oil can help reduce hair loss by strengthening the hair roots and stimulating growth. Regular scalp massages with castor oil can improve blood circulation, providing essential nutrients to the hair follicles.
Dandruff
The antimicrobial properties of castor oil can help to combat dandruff and soothe an itchy, flaky scalp. Mixing castor oil with tea tree oil can enhance its effectiveness against dandruff.
Split Ends
Applying castor oil to the ends of your hair can help to prevent and repair split ends. Its moisturizing properties seal the hair cuticle, reducing the likelihood of split ends forming.
Thin Hair
For those with thin or fine hair, castor oil can help to add volume and thickness. The fatty acids in castor oil nourish the hair strands, making them appear fuller and healthier.
DIY Castor Oil Treatments

Rinse: Shampoo and condition your hair thoroughly.
Castor Oil and Egg Hair Mask
Ingredients: 2 tablespoons castor oil, 1 egg.
Preparation: Beat the egg and mix it with castor oil until well combined.
Application: Apply the mixture to your scalp and hair, covering it with a shower cap.
Duration: Leave the mask on for 30 minutes.
Rinse: Shampoo your hair thoroughly to remove the mask.

Coconut oil benefits!
I love using coconut oil for so many different things. I have been using coconut oil since I was a little girl , growing up my mother would mix conditioner , olive oil and coconut oil and use it as a Leave in conditioner - to style my hair. She would also use coco butter and coconut oil on me and my siblings skin especially in the winter time. This contributed to my love for coconut oil and its why I always have a jar of it lying around somewhere.
Makeup Remover.
Using coconut oil will melt your makeup away even waterproof makeup! Its a cheaper alternative to buying actual make up remover and less irritating in my opinion. Just take a pea sized of coconut oil and gently rub across your eyes and watch the make up of the day come off with ease.
Shaving.
Shaving with coconut oil will leave your legs or armpits feeling like silk. I personally use Nair. Nair is a hair removal cream that you put on the area that you want hair gone , wait 5-10 min and then you you wipe it off. I Usually put on a thin layer of coconut oil before I use the hair removal cream.Hair removal creams can sometimes cause irritation because they are so harsh on your skin I find that coconut oil helps soothe and prep my legs or armpits for Nair. You can also use coconut oil in place of your shaving cream it will leave your skin soft and smooth.
Exfoliator.
You can use can coconut oil to make your own Exfoliator. Take half a cup of coconut oil half a cup of olive oil and some raw sugar and mix it together and use it in the shower and exfoliate your body. Coconut oil is good for keeping moisture in and healing wounds which makes it perfect for exfoliating.
Consumption.
The fatty acids in coconut oil can encourage your body to burn fat, and they provide quick energy to your body and brain. They also raise HDL cholesterol in your blood, which may help reduce heart disease risk. I like to take a table spoon of it in the morning on an empty stomach or mix it into my green tea at night.
Eyelash And Eyebrow Treatment.
I like to use coconut oil to help grow out my eyebrows and my eyelashes. Just mix half Mix coconut oil and half Jamaican black castor oil in a small jar together and put on your eyelashes and eyebrows every night. In about a month You’ll see you then grow and you’ll see them be thicker and fuller.
Hair.
Coconut oil stimulates hair growth. Coconut oil is a natural way to help your hair grow longer, thicker, and faster. The vitamins and essential fatty acids naturally found in coconut oil nourish the scalp and help to remove sebum build-up from hair follicles. Coconut oil promotes scalp health fighting against such problems as insect bites, lice and dandruff. Coconut oil moisturizes dry hair and adds luster, shine and softness to the hair. Coconut oil also prevents hair breakage and split ends, contributing to hair length.
I hope this is a good guide for you guys. With All the benefits of coconut oil you should all get a jar and see the benefits for yourselves. I highly recommend that you get the raw organic virgin coconut oil out of the cooking section of your local grocery store for the best results.
Till next time X’s and O’s🤍

Afrocentric Hair & Skin Care 101
What is Afrocentric hair and skin care?
There’s a difference between general black hair and skin care vs. Afrocentric hair and skin care. A lot of mainstream brands sold in stores targeted at black hair and beauty are designed FOR black people but aren’t made BY black people and/or don’t contain ingredients from our own cultures.
You should always pick the products in your price range and that are good for your hair and your body! But it’s also helpful to be an informed consumer when choosing between hundreds of beauty brands - and unfortunately, the information isn’t always readily available. So here’s a simple guide to Afrocentric hair and skin care to help you put the best nature can provide into your body while also supporting and giving back to our own communities.
What’s good for my hair and skin?
Here’s some tips and general guidelines that I’ve learned so far through research and practice on my hair and skin hair journey!
1. The more natural, the better. Now, personally, I wouldn’t say this about everything in life! Pharmaceuticals can be life-saving, and I don’t think all natural or traditional remedies should be used in place of prescribed medications. However, when it comes to the regular care of your skin and hair - the fewer toxins and chemicals are absorbed by your body, the better!
2. As I’ve done more research, I’ve discovered that in most cases when it comes to all-natural ingredients, what’s good for your hair is also what’s good for your skin - and vice versa. Most natural ingredients can be used to hydrate, heal, protect, soothe, and strengthen your skin and your hair!
3. One size does not fit all. On your own journey to care for your skin and hair, you’ll want to experiment with different oils, butters, creams, and products to find out which types, combinations, and amounts work best for your skin and hair types! Find out if you have normal, dry, oily, combination, or sensitive skin to get a sense of what your skin care needs are. Knowing your hair type is also helpful for figuring out what types of products will keep it the healthiest and strongest.
4. Always read the ingredients list on the labels of any products you purchase. Whether you’re buying a supposedly single-ingredient product or something that lists three natural ingredients on its front label, always look at the fine print and check the official list. For instance, SheaMoisture is an excellent and popular black-owned skincare brand, but unfortunately, many of their products do include chemicals alongside the good stuff. And if you don’t check the labels, you might wind up with a “99% aloe vera gel” that contains mostly water.
This is a long post so click below the read more line to get to my lists of black-owned skin & hair care brands + Afrocentric skin & hair care ingredients.
Which skin and hair care ingredients are Afrocentric?

Cleopatra Used it as a Beauty Aid. Now Castor Oil Is Staging a Cosmetics Comeback.
Castor oil has been around for thousands of years and has been a medicine-cabinet staple for hundreds. So it’s somewhat surprising to see the standby elixir — known for calming stomachs and beautifying hair — gaining attention from the wellness and beauty industries, which are churning out products claiming to grow your eyelashes or make your skin glow.
Castor oil allegedly was a weapon in Cleopatra’s beauty arsenal — the Queen of the Nile is said to have used it in her hair and, some sources say, to brighten the whites of her eyes. Castor oil’s benefits are myriad: as a moisturizer and anti-inflammatory, as well as a hair thickener and strengthener. Castor oil has historically appeared in many products, though until recently, only a few brands, such as Sunny Isle Jamaican Black Castor Oil, featured the ingredient front and center. Now, it’s being marketed on the front of product packaging instead of buried in an ingredient list under its chemical name, according to Manhattan-based dermatologist Julie Russak. The Beauty Of Castor Oil
What Is Castor Oil?
Castor Oil is the pale, thick, yellow oil pressed from the Ricinus Communis, or castor bean plant. It has been used for thousands of years as a health and beauty regimen.
Castor Oil Benefits
Castor oil is a powerful multi-purpose oil, that can be used head to toe. One of the most popular uses for it is as a natural laxative. A spoonful of castor oil stimulates the walls of the colon to move waste matter down, lubricating it, and allowing soft and easy passage. When you take castor oil, you should expect to have a bowel movement within six to twelve hours. With it being natural, and fast-acting, it’s no wonder it’s been used as a constipation remedy for many, many, years.
Another use for castor oil is a moisturizer. Castor oil is rich in ricinoleic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, steanic acid, and palmitic acid. These fatty acids act as a humectant, and when applied to hair, skin, and scalp, water is drawn in from the atmosphere around us, leaving way for soft, subtle, and healthier looking hair, skin, and nails. Castor oil is also an anti-fungal, it keeps foreign invaders from brewing and killing them off, making it ideal for a wonderful hair and scalp health promoter, which leads up to the third use of castor oil.
Castor oil is also commonly used to re-grow hair in bald spots, re-grow eyelashes, and achieve longer hair in a shorter period of time. Castor oil stimulates blood flow to scalp and hair follicles. The more blood flow that is brought to the follicles, the more nutrients it brings in, the more nutrients, the more it encourages hair growth and thickness. Because castor oil is so thick, it is hard to apply evenly all over the scalp. By using one or more nutrient-rich carrier oils, such as coconut oil and/or olive oil to mix in, combined with a ten minute scalp massage, you’re giving yourself a powerful treatment that will benefit in the long run. Many people who have used castor oil have seen re-grown edges in as little as two weeks, and by four weeks, up to an inch worth of hair growth. However, not getting an inch in one month doesn’t mean you did anything wrong, your hair growth cycle is likely different than another person. How fast your hair grows tends to fluctuate depending on what you’ve eaten or drank, what season it is, hormones, and what products you put on your scalp.
Other Types Of Castor Oil
There is another type of castor on the market that is great, and it’s called Jamaican Black Castor Oil. Common in the African-American for hair growth and growing back bald spots, this castor oil is very similar in properties for all the benefits mentioned above, except it has a dark brown color, and it has an ash-burnt smell. This dark brown color and burnt smell comes from how Jamaican Black Castor Oil is made. The beans are boiled and roasted, and then the oil is skimmed off and what remains is the dark color and burnt smell. Same with JBCO, you might want to mix it with another carrier oil for beneficial applying to hair and scalp.
Jamaican Black Castor Oil
I recommend castor oil for all the things listed above. However, I’m not forcing anyone to use it, because castor oil is not for everyone. Some people do not like oil in their hair and scalp at all, and that’s ok, because there are other plenty things that can encourage blood flow to the scalp to promote hair growth, such as a scalp massage or exercise. You can also check out my first post titled, How To Make Rice Water For Healthier, Shinier Hair, And Increased Length Retention. This is only a suggestion, and if you try it and get great results, I’m happy! I hope everyone who reads is having a great day, and I’ll see you in next week’s post!
**IMPORTANT NOTE*** Due to castor Oil’s stimulant properties, it is advised not to take while pregnant, as it can induce premature labor.
