To make this list, we choose face cleansers that have gentle formulations, ethically sourced plant-based ingredients, and contain minimal chemical irritants.
The reason for the high price tag includes multiple factors.
Everything I’ve tried from this brand is fantastic and very affordable for such a clean, natural skincare line.
Gently massage your face to get rid of any excess cleanser.
Research has shown that AHAs are effective in treating a wide range of skin conditions, including photoaging, acne and rosacea. Hopping in the shower isn't just about getting clean, it's also an opportune time to focus on overall skin health with a few skin-friendly habits. Systemic evening primrose oil improves the biophysical skin parameters of healthy adults.
*Josh Rosebrook – Complete Moisture Organic Cleanser ($
Being able to feel good about yourself, especially when looking at your face close up in Zoom meetings and FaceTime chats, is crucial. A great face wash can help you rid your skin of dirt, oil, sweat, and dead skin cells that have built up as your busy day goes on. But finding natural face washes that don't have harsh ingredients like parabens, phthalates, or fragrances that take a toll on your skin is also important.
We love this lightly foaming cleanser because it removes makeup really well but doesn’t leave your skin feeling tight or dry after washing. Normal and combination types can generally find both non-foaming and foaming cleansers to be effective. Great ingredients for normal/combo skin include vitamin C , antioxidants , clays , and natural oils for moisture. This all-natural facial soap bar from Herbivore smells like a bouquet of roses and works like a charm. Each bar is made from clean ingredients like olive oil, coconut oil, vitamin E, white clay, French pink clay, rose oil, and blood orange essential oil. The clays draw out impurities and stimulate cell turnover while the essential oils vitamin e cream relieve inflammation, hydrate, and kill bacteria.

How To Do Double Cleansing For Clear And Glowing Skin Because there are many natural ways of cleansing your skin to make it soft and smooth.
A solid and affordable vegan face wash from Acure that's packed with natural and organic ingredients. Acure makes this list because of their affordable price point (typically less than $10) and clean ingredients. Their products aren't necessarily the "best" compared to many on this list, but they certainly are the "best" in their price range. Not to mention, this cleanser is pretty solid and gets the job done without being overly drying.
Most of all, their skin is left feeling soft, supple, and moisturized—without any dryness. The super-gentle, lotion-like formula is spiked with fatty alcohols that coat the skin to replace that typical post-cleanse tightness with skin-coddling goodness. "If you're not sure which cleanser to get, try this one," Dr. Turegano advises. The ingredients work double-time to wash away daily grime, reduce inflammation, and keep skin bright and dewy. Our dermatologist friends also name this bottle as one of the best face washes on the market.
Dead Sea mud soaks up impurities while the other 93% certified organic ingredients rejuvenate the skin. Good for normal, combination, and oily skin, the foaming gel cleanser removes grime, hydrates, and soothes. It brightens too, thanks to its hit of AHA exfoliation, and won’t strip your skin of moisture or alter its pH balance.
*Alteya Organics — USDA Organic Rose Oil Face Wash
However, a face wash is foamy and deeply cleanses your pores, while a cleanser has a creamy, gel, or watery texture that helps dissolve any excess grime or dirt from your face. Wet these soft Olay single-use cloths with water to cleanse, tone, and gently exfoliate in one swipe. These GH Beauty Award-winning and Seal star wipes are proven to effectively wash away even eye makeup without over-drying skin, Beauty Lab evaluation confirmed. Redness is no match for Dr. Jart+'s Cicapair Tiger Grass Enzyme Foam Cleanser. Cleansing is hardly the most glamorous step in a skin-care lineup, but in many ways, it's the most important — so we believe in using only the best face wash around. My favorite part of making my own skin care products is that it’s easy to customize your product according to your skin type.
A pleasantly invigorating face wash specifically designed for acne-prone skin, oily skin, and those with large pores. The soothing blend of tea tree oil, peppermint, and rosemary create a gentle cooling, tingling, and minty sensation that is sure to wake your skin up. Although it removes excess oil and grime, this wash also leaves your face feeling plump and moisturized. Cleanses, rejuvenates and balances formulated with plant-based hydrosol water. Organic pomegranate essential oil extract is an antioxidant and organic Propolis helps keep oily skin at bay. A few years ago, it was hard to find non-toxic skincare products.
Read real Grove member reviews on the products in this list to find out more about which face wash is best for you. Perfect for dry and sensitive skin, this oil is made with a blend of olive, castor, rosehip, and sunflower seed oils. Simply apply and it will melt into skin, makeup, and SPF to help rinse them off. Use it with one of theirmuslin clothsfor a little exfoliation.
Lack of synthetic products that are good for the skin
They’re just under $10 and contain nourishing Bentonite Clay, Saponified Oils of Sustainable Palm, Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, Coconut Milk Powder, Honey, and Shea Butter. If you don’t like “dry” soap bars, the Cleo & Coco Coconut Cleanse feels so nourishing – and they’re large. If you have normal skin, you will need 1 ½ teaspoon of castor oil. You will be mixing two different types of oils, so you will need something to hold them.
Many expensive skin products contain yeast, but you can easily make a DIY facial mask at home. Yes, rose water is considered a cleanser due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that protect the skin against free radicals and reduce acne , . Check out the infographic below for some natural cleansers that will leave your skin glowing and smooth. Chickpea flour has been traditionally used as a base for skin purifying face packs. The antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of turmeric powder can help lighten any dark spots on your face, boost acne treatment, and leave your skin feeling cleansed and fresh. Made with age-fighting ingredients like plant stem cells and peptides, Mary Kay’s cleanser, a GH Beauty Award winner and Good Housekeeping Seal star, does more than purify your complexion.
People consume antioxidants in food or may use antioxidant skin care products. This gentle cleanser removes impurities and dirt and gently exfoliates to minimize the appearance of pores. This balancing facial cleanser is anti-aging and evens out skin tone. It works on congested skin to smoothen rough skin and reduce breakouts. However, a 2020 review of studies found no link between lavender and tea tree essential oils and pediatric endocrine disorders. Natural face washes are either non-scented or mildly scented using natural fragrances.
It's made from 99.5% natural, 51% organic ingredients, and none of the bad stuff. This cleanser exfoliates with natural AHA/BHA fruit acids and then soothes and hydrates with aloe + coconut. One of the great things about this cleanser is that it really does a good job of removing makeup, dirt, and oil while leaving your skin feeling super soft. This USDA certified organic cleanser gets in deep to clear pores, kill bacteria, and soothe inflamed skin. Even though it contains a powerful dose of anti-bacterial tea tree oil, this cleanser is non-drying and won't strip your skin's natural oils.

Formulated to gently cleanse the skin -- and with nearly 800 positive reviews -- it's no wonder Simplified Skin's Vitamin C cleanser is one of our favorite affordable options. Packed with vitamin C, aloe vera, avocado oil, and vitamin B, it's an organic face wash that is gentle enough to remove makeup, but powerful enough to boost collagen and reduce redness. If when they’re free of synthetic perfumes, many face washes still have some kind of fragrance, often from plant-based ingredient.
Each type has pros and cons, and which one you choose depends on your preferences and needs. Natural cleansers can get a bad reputation for not actually cleansing your skin, but this pick from Pacifica Beauty proves that myth wrong. It can wash away even the toughest makeup in one rinse, sans scrubbing or double-cleansing—and without any harsh sulfates that can strip the skin, leaving it parched. Tata Harper dishes out some of the best natural beauty products we've used, and this cream cleanser is no exception. Ever the multitasker, it cleanses, clarifies, and tones the skin for flawless results. The product has been formulated with 100% organically sourced and/or certified organic ingredients.
Yes, honey is a good cleanser for all skin types, as stated in the article. To clean off makeup, simply put a few drops of the oil onto a cotton ball or cotton round. Rinse your face using warm water, then follow up with moisturizer and toner. If you enjoy a scented cleanser, this one will be your next favorite. A blend of jasmine, neroli, and rose gives a calming scent, perfect for a few moments of mindfulness at the end of your day.
This gentle, lightly-foaming cleanser—with an ingredient list that reads like a Whole Foods receipt—is great for all skin types. Many people use them interchangeably with facial cleansers. Although both clean the skin, facial cleansers have a creamy, gel-like texture.
At Grove, we take the guesswork out of which products are good for you and your home. Every product meets strict standards for being nontoxic, effective, sustainable, and cruelty-free. Once you find products you love, we ship to your home on a flexible, monthly schedule. This list of products was determined by ratings and reviews from Grove members. We carefully vet all products and services featured on mindbodygreen using our commerce guidelines.
A beauty routine that protects your skin and the environment is indeed the best way to get healthy and glowing skin. So go on, start using one of these natural cleansers and save both your face and the planet at the same time. Savor Beauty’s natural skincare is inspired by Korean self-care rituals. Handmade in small batches, all its products are made with certified organic ingredients. The cleanser is made using two premiere ingredients that do a fantastic job of cleaning your face and leaving it feeling luxurious. Camellia is rich in Omega 6 and antioxidants while rose helps soothe and improve irritated and dull skin.
Not a huge fan of the scent, but I do like the way this cleanser feels. It comes out runny and feels very light and hydrating on my skin. Surprisingly, the AHA Jelly Cleanser can take off my full face of sunscreen and makeup well. Skin feels toned after and maybe a little bit tight for my dry skin, but that’s quickly resolved with all the hydration I add back to my skin after anyways.

Different Luxurious Spa Services and Their Benefits for Rejuvenation
Visiting a spa can effectively reset your mind and body, offering a chance to unwind and relieve stress. The restorative benefits of the best massage and spa treatments are well-documented, as they have the ability to rejuvenate and revitalize your mood. Whether it's a massage to release muscle tension or a facial to restore your skin's radiance, indulging in these activities can help you feel your optimal self.
What is a Spa Treatment?
Spa treatments have become increasingly popular to promote healthier skin and overall well-being. They offer a convenient and effective way to maintain physical and emotional health, often seen as an equivalent to working out at the gym. Unlike exercise, spa treatments require less physical exertion and are a simpler option. Among the most frequently sought-after spa therapies is massage, but treatments such as facials, pedicures, body wraps, and body scrubs are also widely available. It's essential to communicate your desired outcome to the massage therapist Mumbai so that they can provide the most suitable treatment for your needs.
Different Spa Services Provided at Spa Centres
Spa professionals have created a diverse range of treatments to enhance your health and well-being, providing you with many options. With such an extensive selection, deciding which treatment to choose can be challenging.
Facial
One of the benefits of visiting a spa is the facial treatment, which typically involves a combination of processes such as steaming, exfoliation, peels, moisturizing, masks, and massage. These treatments effectively remove dead skin cells, enhance muscle circulation, cleanse pores, and maintain skin hydration. Certain facials are tailored to address concerns like puffiness, blackheads, and skin discolouration. In particular, facials are helpful for anti-ageing purposes, as they can tighten skin and reduce wrinkles by boosting collagen levels. Various facials are available, including anti-ageing, classic, acupuncture, brightening, golden, fruit, and hydrating facials.
Body Scrub
The process of body scrubbing is crucial for eliminating dead skin cells from the body and promoting a smooth and clean complexion. This treatment involves the use of a semi-liquid medium or gel containing coarse grains, such as apricot, walnut, oatmeal, or sea salt, which exfoliate and moisturize the skin. The texture of the scrub is similar to that of body butter or a moisturizing lotion. Typically, abrasive substances like salt, sugar, coffee grounds, rice bran, or pecan hulls are combined with massage oil and scented with essential oils for added aromatherapy benefits. It's important to note that body scrubbing is a form of therapy, not a massage. Every 28 days, the skin cells regenerate, shedding the old ones and replacing them with new cells. To achieve healthy skin, consider booking an appointment with a massage therapist Mumbai.
Body Wrap
A body wrap involves enveloping the body in a linen or plastic sheet, with herbal body wraps being a popular choice due to their numerous benefits. The process entails the therapist covering the entire body with the sheet and leaving the room for an hour. As the skin's pores open up, they absorb the nutrients in the wrap, enhancing the skin's tone and texture. Body wraps come in different types, such as hydrating, detox, slimming, herbal, mud, cellulite, and seaweed wraps, and are among the most popular body spa treatments trending today.
Nail Treatment
Many spas offer nail treatments for both hands and feet. In addition to shaping and polishing nails, nail technicians also provide exfoliation, softening, paraffin treatments, warm cream, and hot-stone massages. These techniques are designed to leave your hands feeling soft and clean. Moreover, you can pick your favourite nail polish colour to match your preferences.
Waxing
Waxing remains the most traditional method of hair removal in spas. The process typically involves an aesthetician applying heated wax onto the skin and pressing a cloth strip into it before swiftly removing it along with the captured hairs. Waxing is a versatile technique that can be applied to any body part, including the chest, back, eyebrows, legs, and upper lip. Some body spa services even offer full Brazilian waxing, which entails removing all hair from the vaginal area.
Manicure
Spas offer a range of hand treatments, including manicures, which involve the removal of excess hair and exfoliation. The process starts by waxing any extra hairs on the hands, followed by a deep cleanse to open up pores. The therapist then massages lotions and creams into the hands, which help remove skin tan and moisturize the skin. Various manicures, such as French, hot oil, and dip powder, are available.
Pedicure
During a pedicure treatment, a pumice stone is typically used to remove dead skin cells from the feet. In addition to this, granular exfoliation, moisturization, and massage are also commonly performed, often extending up to the knee. Various tools are used during the pedicure session, such as cuticle cream, lotion, cotton balls, cuticle nipper, foot bath, nail buffer, acetone, orangewood stick, toe spacers, towels, and toenail clippers.
Benefits of Spa Treatments
Spa treatments are a great way to relieve stress and improve mental relaxation. They offer a range of benefits, including:
Detox - Eliminating harmful toxins from the body is known as detoxification; a spa is an excellent place to do it. A spa that focuses on detox treatments can help you eliminate toxins and lose weight.
Improve Confidence - Spa treatments can be a great way to boost your mood and confidence. By indulging in body treatments, you can feel rejuvenated, refreshed, and relaxed, which can help you overcome feelings of negativity and low self-esteem.
Lower Blood Pressure - The best massage and spa treatments can effectively manage blood pressure without relying on medication. This approach may be constructive for older individuals who are dealing with hypertension.

harry styles x reader friends with benefits au
soon after moving to new york, you meet harry styles at a party. you convince yourself that there’s nothing between the two of you until it becomes too intense to ignore. if you keep telling yourself that he doesn’t mean anything to you, does that make it true?
a/n: hi everyone! welcome to my first harry styles series. This originally started as a challenge for myself to try and write a harry fic inspired by taylor swift songs so that’s where the chapter titles come from, it’s kind of become something bigger than that but I figured I would keep the theme anyway
chapter 1: welcome to new york
The story starts in New York City.
A place written about in countless stories, about love, about heartbreak, about giving up, about standing tall, and about putting broken hearts into drawers and slamming them shut. It’s easy to say that writing another story about New York is beating a dead horse, throwing characters into the same tired old setting and letting them live out the writer's wildest daydream. But it’s never been about the city itself, it’s always been about the people. Something about the city always manages to be the perfect stomping ground for people, for characters to find each other in a whirlwind of A list parties and harsh billboard lights.
Speaking of which you are suddenly very sick of said harsh billboard lights in the middle of times square. As someone who has read (and written) countless articles describing times square as a flurry of activity but also with some kind of inherent magical appeal, the center of everything it’s own small utopia, you know that everyone who wrote that had to be aware of their own bullshit. It’s a nuanced way of tourist trapping, smart, albeit annoying on a variety of levels. A gimmick to get wide eyed little girls to stand in the middle of chaos and think that maybe they could carve out a place for themselves here.
You’re not trying to carve out a place for yourself, you’re trying to get to a stupid party. That and manage to not get any mud or other stains on this very nice dress you’re wearing. After what seems like forever of looking around and then suddenly looking back down at your phone just in case anyone wanted to even try to make eye contact with you, familiar faces appear out of the sea of people.
You greet them with a look of disappointment, “Two questions: why did you want to meet here-” a tourist elbows there way past you mid sentence, inadvertently proving your point, “-and why aren’t we just taking an uber?”
Molly, a tall black woman with objectively perfect hair (which is somehow gorgeous at all times), smiles and pats your shoulder like a kindergarten teacher, “I thought you would want to see Times Square.”
“I’ve seen it,” You shoot back, squinting again at the bright light coming from directly behind her head, and adjusting your jacket over your shoulders.
She squeezes your shoulder quickly, “And also to teach you that any time someone asks you to meet them in Times Square they’re fucking with you.”
“I figured you were fucking with me,” You tell her, “But thank you, god forbid the midwestern girl gets lost in Times Square waiting for someone to meet her who is obviously not coming.”
Molly laughs, and so do you. She looks down at her phone briefly, and then back at you, “To answer your question, why would anyone ever try to get an uber in the city at seven?”
You shrug, “What kind of self respecting party starts at eight?”
Fletcher, who’s name admittedly sounds like it should belong to anyone but him, finally stops staring at the large elmo mascot a few feet away and jumps into the conversation. “The kind with an age range, twenty somethings to late thirty somethings, who no longer have the energy to go from nine to six am.”
You sigh, “So boring then or-?”
“It’s about networking,” Molly says, “And also drinking, but mostly networking.”
“One of those unique business opportunities where you get free food, and possibly run into celebrities, singers mostly.”
You roll your eyes, “Wow you had me at various singers.”
“Says the woman who did an interview series with Tik Tok kids who all live in the same house,” Molly snips, half joking.
You shiver, half from the memories of that objectively terrible experience and half from a sudden breeze. Needless to say a significant portion of the reason why you’d left LA, was because their entertainment section was suddenly drifting away from profiles on actors and towards compilations of one minute videos made by sun tanned twenty somethings that somehow made them millions a year. That and after you’d spent two weeks semi living with ten of said twenty somethings for a story that had gotten a lot of buzz you never wanted to see anyone connected to the app ever again.
You give Molly your best ‘I’ll kill you’ smile, “You have to decide what you’re going to make fun of me for, is it the midwestern thing or is it the Tik Tok thing because one of those involves you admitting that I lived in Los Angeles for a year which means I’m perfectly capable of handling Times Square in all of it’s elmo public urinating glory.”
Fletcher looks again at the mascot who is not in fact publicly urinating, but honestly if it did suddenly start none of you would be surprised.
Molly looks at you for a second and says, “Both,” She looks at Fletcher.
He looks at you then back and Molly and nods, “Yeah. Both.”
You roll your eyes, “So can we get going now or-?”
The ride to the location Molly had all but refused to tell you was filled with talks of the impending deadlines on Monday for pieces that were anywhere from fifty to seventy percent finished. (your’s is at the lower end of the spectrum because there is only so much one person can write about an art installation that you found less insightful and more literal in the sense that the sculpture was literally just large amounts of clay pressed together in something that shouldn’t even be considered a shape with no metaphor or meaning behind it).
Soon enough you’re standing in what looks like mostly a residential neighborhood, with one precariously nice building in the middle of the block. You turn to Molly, “What the-?”
“Don’t finish that, just be patient,“ She interrupts as a response. “You are very impatient, you know that?”
“I’m a journalist,” You say, “I need to know all of the facts, including what the-” You take a breath, “-heck we’re doing in the middle of a nice little neighborhood, I was expecting something more Gossip Girland Brooklyn Nine-Nine.”
“You’re definition of journalist is a lot looser than mine,” Molly says.
“Have you ever watched Gossip Girl? And isn’t Brooklyn Nine-Nine set in a precinct?” Fletcher adds.
“No, and Jake and Amy live in an apartment.”
“Beyond the fact that you’re a TV writer who has never watched Gossip Girl-” Fletcher sighs, even though you know he hasn’t watched it either beyond random snippets for a hit piece he wrote on it a few months back (not received well by the way), “The top floor of that building-” He points to the precariously nice building, “isn’t apartments its a loft, the floor is huge and only one house.”
You squint your eyes, “You’re kidding.”
“And the rest are offices?”
“How did they get zoning for that?”
They both shrug at the same time.
“Guys I want to know that if the police bust up this party, speaking of loose terms, I’m going to say that you dragged me here against my will.”
“I always knew you had good survival instincts.”
Molly turns to you, “Look when you’re getting special press access to the inside of the met gala you will be saying thank you Molly for bringing me here to catapult my career.”
“I have catapulted my own career thank you, the Tik Tok thing-” You shake your head, “Nevermind can we go in and stop loitering, then we’ll really get arrested.”
Party is a loose term but you learn that's not necessarily a bad thing. It’s not a rager with strobe lights and pumping bass but there is music playing albeit classical. People mill around at tables talking to one another, both twenty somethings and thirty somethings, you recognize a few faces from the media mostly. Fletcher was right about the food, and Molly was right about the drinks. You talk to a few people just to introduce yourself, a couple of them have heard of you, if only because your sudden cross country move to newspapers that aren’t necessarily competitors but might have a bit of a rivalry was something that people talked about. You’d made a couple thirty under thirty lists (no not the Forbes one) while in LA, which meant nothing to you if you were being completely honest but apparently meant things to other people which is fine.
When you’re finally exhausted at putting on a smile and nodding like you’re actively engaged in conversation and not thinking about something completely you hang out by the bar, not even drinking, just watching the room and all of the people there. You never wanted to get a reputation for being the quiet girl in the corner who just watched and listened because those kinds of people are always seen as weird or doormats or both but if you’re being honest this is where you’re the most comfortable. Making small talk just to get some opportunity down the road has never quite been your style.
You turn to go and find Molly when you suddenly come face to face with someone you recognise right away.
In that moment you realize that Taylor Swift was in fact onto something when she said, “Didn’t you flash your green eyes at me?” As weird as it is, the first thing you think when you meet Harry Styles is how that song is definitely about him, because those green eyes are striking and they are staring right at you.
“Hi,” He says, quick to the draw.
You take a step back just because of how close you are and say, “Hello.”
He looks at you like he’s thinking about something, and then holds out his hand, “Harry.”
“y/n,” You shake his hand. You recover from your initial shock quickly, and plaster on that fake conversation smile again, ready for whatever it is he wants to say, if anything. You came here to ‘network’ and you’re not sure what kind of advantage talking to Harry Styles could possibly give you, but for some reason you want to talk to him.
“What brings you here?” He asks you.
“My co-workers,” You shrug, “I would much rather be at home watching Succession on HBO and listening to the Beatles on my record player, like true people of culture would.”
He looks at you for a second, as you try to keep a straight face. Then he laughs, “Seriously?”
“Fuck no,” You say, “That’s my impression of the girl who meets Harry Styles at a party and has to convince him that she is not like all the other girls, she is the one for him.” You smile, “Was that good? Or should I try again?”
He thinks about it, “I think you should try again.”
“Because you think it’s wrong or because you think I’m funny?”
“What do you think?”
“Well if you think I’m funny, then I’ve already won, I’ve tricked you into thinking that I’m not like all the other girls with reverse psychology .”
“Are you screwing with me?”
“Of course I’m screwing with you,” You take a sip of your drink. “If I were home right now I would be playing Lizzo on my record player, and drinking something with a medically unsafe level of caffeine.” You pause, “What brings you here?”
“Honestly,” He looks out over the room, “I thought that this was going to be a much cooler party. Instead it’s just a bunch of reporters, and editors and media people.”
“Who are inherent mood killers?” You ask.
He narrows his eyes at you, “Am I allowed to say yes to that?”
“You can do whatever you want,” You tease him, “You’re Harry Styles, who am I to tell you what to say?”
“I feel like it was a trick question, which means that you are also a reporter.”
You laugh again, “That was funny, I’m going to write that down for my story. ‘Harry is genuinely funny which he tries to use to make up for the lack of small talk abilities’.”
“You’re screwing with me again.”
“Of course I am,” You say, “I work in the arts section of the Times, well not the actual art anymore but the movies and television.”
“TV critic?” He says, “So you’re harsh.”
“TV critics are just harsh for attention, I don’t need to be because no movie snob or well meaning director is going to go to the Times to see what we thought of any given movie. I write honestly, sometimes under the influence of caffeine and try to contain my excitement at narratively unnecessary plot twists.” You explain, “That and I get paid to watch TV, and usually private screenings of movies.”
He leans against the bar a sign that he doesn’t plan on moving anytime soon. You’re not going to say that you’re so awestruck by a celebrity that you have no idea what to say, or that he’s intimidating you but your hand shakes just a little as you clutch your fingers around the glass because he’s objectively attractive. Objectively attractive in the way that if he were on a dating app you would swipe yes and then put a lot of pressure on yourself to be funny and relatable even though you know that you don’t need him.
“What did you think of Dunkirk?”
“Oh!” You forgot that he acted, “That was before my time. I was working at the LA Times doing the music section then I think.” You know what he’s going to say next, “And before you ask yes there is a piece still posted of me reviewing your debut album. I think I reached out to get an interview with you, but I was suspiciously declined.” He looks embarrassed, “I was like under five years out of college I would’ve declined me too. They only gave me the story because it was the time where people weren’t sure that ex boyband members could make objectively good albums that meant something.”
He tilts his head to the side for a second, “And? Can they?”
“I’m in no place to make a generalization,” You say, “But I think you did. Admittedly that album was something, very intimate.”
“I don’t know if I should be taking that as a compliment.”
“I don’t want to give you a compliment because some people have a hard time with them, and this will get very awkward very fast. No shame, personally I have no mechanism to take compliments on my writing.”
He laughs, “I think I can take it.”
“Hmm.. okay,” You take another step back, “Okay are you sure you're ready?”
“Yes.”
“I think the entire album was very good, very unexpectedly good or at least I didn’t expect it to be. It was very open in that way that songs are vulnerable but still leave enough mystery that your fans don’t think you're a shitty person and I really like meet me in the hallway,” You say quickly, “In fact I listened to it just yesterday when I was working.”
He doesn’t say anything for a minute, and then fake sighs, “See I don’t think that counts because it was more of a backhanded compliment.”
“What?”
“You said you didn’t expect it to be good, that’s not really a compliment then-”
“I was saying it pleasantly surprised me,” You say, throwing your hands in the air in mock annoyance. “You surprise me, Harry.” He doesn’t say anything, and for a minute neither do you, but you snap back to life just in time to say, “Is that compliment enough to embarrass you?”
He shrugs, but you know he’s messing with you. “It’s something but I don’t know if it’s really doing it for me.”
“You are impossible, just another out of touch celebrity, is nothing ever good enough for you people?” It’s by now that you realize that you inadvertently closed the gap between the two of you, and you’re standing very close.
He seems to realize this at the same time as you, “I-”
“Are you going to ask me to have sex with you?” You deadpan.
“What?” He looks offended for a second, “No.”
“I had to ask,” You tell him, “It’s happened before.”
“I was going to ask you for your number.”
“See usually when a guy asks me that they’re asking so-”
“It’s not for that.”
“Then what’s it for?”
He looks at you with something in his eyes that you don’t know the meaning of, “In case you want to do an interview, so that they don’t reject you this time.”
You know that’s not it, but you give it to him anyway because he’s Harry Styles (which yes is not a valid reason but this ‘party’ is very boring and this is the most interesting thing to happen to you in at least the past week). It takes you a minute to remember which one is your real number and which one is the fake number you give off if a guy is asking because he wants a booty call, but you eventually give it to him. Then you scurry off with a quick goodbye when you realize how late it is, and how you do have work to do. There’s a new episode of Big Little Lies out tomorrow and you don’t understand why but people are very into the show, and very into your episode recaps.
You corner Molly away from some guy you think might have actually been able to get her press access to the Met Gala and remind her that she also has a deadline tomorrow. The two of you go off to look for Fletcher and find him very close to sealing the deal with an objectively pretty girl, but you politely remind him that he has work to do and is very busy. The girl looks sad but let’s him go without much whining. You would’ve understood if she tried to get him to stay with her, he’s a little bit shorter than Molly but to be fair Molly is above averagely tall, and is nice and fit and has brown curly hair which you know from personal experience is sometimes just kryptonite. (you’ve kissed Fletcher before, long story, and can also say he’s on your top list of good kissers as well right up there with a guy you hooked up with in LA only to realize later that he was Robert Pattinson).
Somehow the three of you are only able to make it back to your apartment. So the night ends with Molly and Fletcher in the living room on the couch and in a sleeping bag respectively, and you are comfortably in your bed. Your phone sits on your nightstand, suspiciously silent. You’re not waiting for Harry Styles to call you, nope, definitely not.

When Katara woke up, she was in a giant, fluffy red cloud. Pushing on the downy comforter, Katara swam up to the top of the linens. Glancing over her shoulder, she saw someone sitting on the other edge of the bed, their black hair pouring straight down their back.
“Ah-” Katara started and began to sit up.
“I’ll save you the embarrassment.” A woman’s voice interrupted. Katara sat fully up, scooting back against the headboard. Mai turned her head enough that Katara could almost make out her profile, but still couldn’t read her face.
“Zuko is my best friend, outside of Ty Lee. I was forced to be Azula’s playmate because of my family and I was forced to be his girlfriend for the same reason. I was forced to do a lot of things because of who my father is and because I have a little brother.” Mai said. “I am not an emotional person and it was kind of assumed that I would just be miserable all of my life. Zuko makes me less miserable.”
“Mai-” Katara started but Mai held up a hand.
“I’m not in love with him, but I always thought he was my best chance at happiness. I’m not so certain of that now, and I’m definitely sure he’d be happier with someone else. But I’ll tell you this,” Mai stopped and stood from the bed. “I’m not going to let him go until he says he wants to leave. And there’s a lot you don’t know about him.”
“Nothing is happening between him and I.” Katara said quickly. Mai turned now and held her hands together down in front of her. She looked regal, if not a little bit like the proverbial stick in the metaphorical mud.
“Unlike you, Zuko tells me everything. It’s why I’m being nice right now. These things reflect on me, so I have to know.” She replied. “I was the one there when he was burned and when he was sent away. I’ve gone through more with him than your one moment of broken vulnerability.”
“For all your talk, it sounds like you’re pretty threatened Mai.” Katara shot back. The corner of Mai’s mouth hitched upward and she scoffed.
“I put up with Azula’s threats, I have little to fear of this summertime crush. I’m telling you this because I’m trying to help you. You don’t know certain important aspects of Zuko’s life and they are things that can and will blow up in your face. If I was really threatened, I would’ve stayed quiet, or taken a picture of you sleeping in my boyfriend’s bed. But I’m warning you, there’s a reason why I’m his girlfriend. Whether any of us like it or not.” Mai explained and then turned, walking briskly to the bedroom door.
As she opened it, Katara could see Sokka’s startled face.
“Mai.” He said and she brushed past him.
“Sokka.” She replied coolly and continued walking. Sokka watched her go but quickly turned back to Katara.
“You okay?” He asked.
“Yeah. What’s going on?” Katara got out of bed and twisted the large sweatpants around to straighten them out. She hadn’t thought Zuko was that much bigger than her; taller sure, but he seemed rather thin.
“We’re having dinner, and something special.” Sokka said with a grin. Katara walked around the bed, looking concerned.
“What’s that?” She asked.
“Just come out.” Sokka insisted. Katara followed him and marveled at the size of the apartment. The hallway opened up as the interior wall ended and she could see down to the first floor. The stairs were walled in by glass but they looked like they were floating. It gave her a bit of vertigo and her clammy hands clung to the railing.
The first floor was an open floor plan, so she could see Mai, Zuko, and Suki standing around a large island.
“Are you sure you won’t come?” Zuko asked Mai, who shook her head.
“Your sister wants to return to Caldera. Where she goes, I go.” She answered. Suki leaned across the island, looking bored.
“One would think that, all things considered, you would not be doing that.” Suki said.
“Well, one doesn’t think that, so off I go.” Mai replied evenly. She put a hand on Zuko’s shoulder and glanced at Katara as she approached.
“But I’m sure you’ll have fun without me.” She added.
“I’ll call you when I get back.” Zuko said and Mai gave him a small wave as she walked to the front door. Sokka went to the stove and pulled a lid off a pot, letting fragrant steam waft into the air.
“Where are you going?” Katara asked, standing uneasily in her borrowed clothes.
“Not him, we.” Suki said, standing now and throwing her arms wide.
“Us?” Katara asked, looking between her and Zuko.
“Sokka made a killing on the lilies and wants to take a trip.” He said.
“Sokka saved a lot of money so that he could hang out with his sister who trashed his shop this morning.” Sokka clarified. He was stirring whatever was in the pot and Katara could smell meat.
“I didn’t trash it!” She balked.
“He’s decided to actually take a vacation for once and we’re going to spend the week at Ember Island. He’s rented a house there.” Suki said. She then leaned over to Katara to stage whisper. “I may have convinced him to go so don’t blow this for me.”
“I,” Katara stammered and looked around. Focusing on her brother’s back, she wondered why he wasn’t facing her. She wondered what he had thought of the broken glass.
She wondered why she didn’t tell him.
After dinner, Suki drove Katara back to the shop to pick up her car. Driving back home alone, Katara found that her mind was blissfully empty. Having poured herself out earlier, she knew it would slowly trickle back in, but for now she was at peace. Katara knew that she’d have to address it eventually, the very least of which being a talk with Zuko. That was for later, and that night she spent time packing and getting ready to leave.
They met up in the morning at the airport. Suki was animated, talking about the beach and seafood, but Sokka was more reserved. Even Zuko looked relaxed, putting her brother more at odds with the tone of their departure.
Then Katara got her ticket and she choked.
“First class?” She sputtered.
“Okay, that was my doing.” Zuko said and smiled sheepishly. “I don’t do business class.”
“Oh spirits you’re one of them.” Katara murmured and Suki laughed.
“We deserve it honey, but heavens know my pension doesn’t cover much and you two don’t get anything from the Poles.” She replied.
“We could.” Sokka remarked and Katara flinched. He didn’t sound bitter or resentful, but it was just another reminder of what she was avoiding. Another thing she was keeping from him.
Suki and Sokka sat together on one side of the aisle and Katara took her seat next to Zuko.
“Have you flown much?” Zuko asked as they watched the other passengers file in.
“Not really. It wasn’t safe before, and I got used to boat travel.” Katara replied and slid open the shutter of the window. “But I did make the initial flight out to Republic City for school.”
“I hear Rep U is a good school.” Zuko said. Katara shrugged one shoulder, watching the ground crew on the tarmac.
“It definitely benefited from the occupation. The Fire Nation takes schooling seriously.” She said.
“Ah, yes, well.” Zuko cleared his throat and Katara winced. “Are you excited about living in Ba Sing Se for med school?”
“I was.” She muttered.
“Is, did you not want to come on this trip? With me?” Zuko added and Katara looked at him.
“No, Zuko. Sorry, it’s not about you.” She said and sighed. “I’m thankful to be taking this trip. Trust me.”
It was a short plane ride from Ba Sing Se to Ember Island, but the stewards still went down the aisle with the drink cart. Suki insisted that they get champagne and Zuko obliged, making a laborious display of handing over his credit card. Suki made some off-hand joke about reparations and Zuko blushed as she laughed.
When they landed, Katara was grateful for the drink. Standing in customs made her anxiety mount and she nervously twisted her passport in her hands. Her throat was dry and she struggled to swallow. Looking at the Fire Nation guards, her breathing became shallow.
How many blockades had they crossed? How many guards had they surprised in the dead of night? What if her name was on a list?
Sokka stood ahead of her, his passport in one hand, the other leisurely holding onto his suitcase handle.
Zuko had stepped into another lane and was a few people ahead of them. The customs agent looked surprised but Zuko passed through the border quickly.
Sokka stepped up and handed over his passport. The agent stamped it. He went through. And then it was her turn.
“Business of pleasure?” The agent asked as she scanned Katara’s passport.
“Vacation. Pleasure.” She stammered.
“Length of stay?”
“A week.”
“Anything to declare?”
“No.”
The agent stamped Katara’s passport and handed it back with a smile. “Welcome to the Fire Nation. Enjoy your stay.”
Katara took her passport and walked through, rolling her suitcase behind her. As she waited for Suki, she stood next to Sokka and Zuko, who were chatting about famous surfers. Off to the side, in what she supposed was a waiting area, a TV silently projected the news. Thuy’s standoffish portrait surfaced followed by another, more familiar picture. Katara’s shoulders rose with tension as she saw the picture she had buried under a stack of old newspapers with other relics of the war.
Arnook and her father, standing behind her and Sokka.
Luckily, the others were distracted and when Suki joined them, they walked away from the TV and out to the taxi pickup.
The air was muggy in the Fire Nation. It was always humid and Katara could feel her hair start to float up as it frizzed. Still, she could smell the sea, and she felt the tension leave her as the breeze blew over her.
“Ready to go?” Zuko asked as a taxi pulled up. Katara nodded with a genuine smile. She almost started laughing with the sudden change in her mood, and even Sokka seemed happier now.
They piled into one taxi, Zuko sitting in the passenger seat while the rest of them squashed together in the back. The driver turned on the radio and suddenly Zuko and Suki were singing along to some pop song.
It was late afternoon by the time they reached the beach house and Zuko went in to see about dinner. As the rest of them fumbled like new foals into the house, somehow already covered in sand, they looked around in slight awe.
The place was modest, but still better than Katara and Sokka had ever known. Zuko announced that he had dinner in the oven and they all scattered to find their bedrooms.
Katara opened a door and laughed as she realized there were themes.
The one she opened was beach themed; meaning specifically sand and seashells. Rough rope was used as chair railing instead of molding separating the two different paint colors. The bottom was a textured beige, while the top was a flat sea green, and the whole thing looked delightfully awful.
Framed shadow boxes of perfect sea shells were hung tastefully over the sandy colored dresser, and the bed had a large blanket printed with types of shells. The hardwood floor was clean and one woven rug laid like a worn out animal in the center of the room.
It was perfect.
After they all got settled and Zuko pulled a premade dish out of the oven, they all went out onto one of the many porches to eat. Suki opened a bottle of wine and they toasted to a good trip.
“Does anyone want to go to the beach after dinner?” Zuko asked.
“And get eaten by whatever swims at night? No thanks.” Sokka answered quickly.
“There’s a reef, the worst thing you have to worry about are the nursery sharks bumping into you and they’re harmless.” Zuko said.
“No thank you.” Sokka said forcefully and took a loud sip of his wine.
“I’ll go. I haven’t been in the ocean in a while.” Katara said.
“I’ll stay here too.” Suki said and Zuko nodded.
They all cleaned up after dinner and Katara went off to change before heading to the beach. Her bathing suit was new, as she normally wore a wetsuit when she swam at the Poles. Purchased while in college, the one piece had the Republic University logo on it. It was odd to wear it, as if she had some sort of school pride when the whole experience had just made her feel awful.
Pulling on a pair of shorts, Katara then tied up her hair and walked out into the living room. Zuko was wearing board shorts, making her curious if he actually surfed considering his conversation with Sokka.
“Ready?” He asked as he slipped into his sandals. Katara wiggled her feet into her flip-flops and nodded.
They had beach access, which was another wonder. Just a short staircase down from the porch was sand dunes. Being so close to the water, Katara wanted to sprint towards the waves. She felt the ocean call to her and a joy she had forgotten swelled to meet it. But she calmed herself, pulling her energy back into her center.
“So how are you doing?” Zuko asked as they walked closer to the water.
“Better. And thank you, by the way.” Katara said, putting her hands behind her back and twirling to look at him. “I appreciate you helping me.”
“And I didn’t even get hurt.” He replied. “You suck at prophecy.”
Katara scoffed and kicked off her flip-flops, already tired of how they dug into the space between her big toe and the line of other toes. Picking them up, she had to resist the urge to chuck them into the water. The rise in impulsive thoughts was concerning.
“Not yet anyway.” She said.
The sand was cool underfoot and the water that rushed over her feet was warm.
“Did you want to talk about it?” Zuko asked.
“Me being a murderer? Not really.” She remarked and kicked her feet in the shallow water.
“I’m not going to debate your definition of murder, but I will argue that what you did was in the defense of not just your home, but of the spirits as well.” Zuko said.
Katara focused on the clear water, watching the sand swirl up around her feet as the rush swept over her.
“It would be easier to accept if it was just La that had wanted him dead.” Katara said as she crouched down, making sure to keep her backside up from the water. “But I willingly made that pact so I could destroy him myself.”
“He had just killed a spirit, Katara. Your spirit. I think that anger is justified.” Zuko replied.
Katara shrugged and ran her fingers through the water. She could feel La call to her. She could always feel the spirit calling when she was in the ocean.
“Yue gave up her body for Tui. I would’ve gotten my bending back and stopped him that way.” Katara said.
“But you didn’t know that.”
“If I had just waited, instead of letting my anger take over, I wouldn’t have killed somebody.”
“Katara, do you know what makes a person good?”
Zuko crouched down next to her and she crossed her arms on her knees, resting her chin there.
“When a good person does something bad, they make amends and they learn from it. They do better.” Zuko went on. “Your brother doesn’t talk about the war. I don’t either, though not for the same reason. I don’t know what you did but I do know you didn’t continue killing Fire Nation soldiers. I know you’re a good person.”
Katara looked out toward the horizon, seeing the sky turn the color of sorbet as the sun set. The pinks and oranges reminded her of an order for the Jasmine Dragon and she sighed.
“I don’t feel like a good person.” She said.
The waves broke a little faster now, the water spraying up and soaking the back of Katara’s thighs. She yelped and stood up, patting her damp backside.
“I think La disagrees.” Zuko said and gave in, sitting down on the wet sand.
“Yeah? Well what does that dumb spirit know.” She countered, kicking at the water and sending up a bigger spray. Zuko sputtered and she chuckled.
“Sorry.” She said.
“So.” Zuko said, trying to sound casual but lingering on the word for too long. “What did Mai say to you?”
“Oh that?” Katara said with her own fake casual tone. “Only that I don’t have a chance and you won’t leave her for unspecified reasons.”
Zuko blinked and then frowned. “Chance at what?”
“At being with you. Since I so clearly have feelings for you.” Katara stated. Zuko blinked again and then looked down at his legs.
“Ah.” He said.
“Not that it matters. I have my whole future outlined by other people and it doesn’t include you.” Katara said.
“What do you mean?” Zuko asked and looked back just in time to see Katara throw her sandals backward onto the sand.
“It means that while I’m this war criminal that’s trying to redeem herself by becoming a healer, my father and the King of the North Pole have decided that I’m to take over the throne and don’t get to have my own life.” She said and unbuttoned her shorts.
“You’re. You what?” Zuko asked, genuinely stunned.
“Huh, I had figured Sokka told you about that already.” She said and wobbled as she lifted a leg out of her shorts.
“Sokka talks about you but not, like. He hasn’t.” Zuko stumbled over his words. “He definitely didn’t tell me that.”
“Yup. I can go ahead and grapple with morality however I want, but ultimately I’m going to be responsible for three tribes of people with blood on my hands.” Katara freed her other leg and tossed her shorts back onto the beach. It didn’t make it far and Katara frowned as she used her bending to push both they and her sandals further up on the beach.
“Which doesn’t leave the possibility open for canoodling a rich kid from the Fire Nation no matter how cute he is. So you can tell your girlfriend not to worry.” She continued. Katara then stopped and looked at Zuko, who was gaping up at her.
“Let’s go for a swim.” She said. Zuko stood and took off his shirt, balling it up and throwing it back toward Katara’s things.
It looked like he worked out.
The tips of Katara’s ears burned and she looked away just as Zuko turned back to her.
“Let’s go.” He said and walked into the water. Katara followed after him, looking at the lines of his back. It made her heart race and the water leapt up to meet her hands as she waded in deeper.
The manic anxiety she had been feeling, what had been mounting for weeks, suddenly shifted at the sight of his skin and it sent Katara reeling. A wave broke against them and sucked Katara under, but she moved with it and dove further into the ocean. When she popped back up with a gasp, she smoothed her hair back and looked around. Zuko came up a moment later, coughing and rubbing seawater out of his eyes.
“Was that you?” He asked.
“Maybe.” She replied with honesty. The waves calmed as they got further out and Katara pushed up onto her back to float. Her feet pointed toward the horizon, she watched the slow spill of the night sky pushing back the sunset. Zuko swam over to her, bouncing on his feet and treading water.
“I really like being in the ocean.” He said suddenly. Katara closed her eyes, slowly moving her arms to stay in place. The water on this side of the reef was much calmer, especially now that she had relaxed.
“I wish I could just live here.” She murmured.
“You’d have a better chance than me.” Zuko said.
“Do you really think I’m a good person Zuko?” Katara asked.
“I certainly don’t think a bad person would spend their time hurting themselves and pursue an education in medicine.” He answered.
“You’re very nice to me.” She said with a laugh.
“You’re very easy to be nice to.” He replied and pushed on her legs, making her spin a bit. The stars became visible overhead and Katara sank into the water, using her bending to suck herself deep into the water. As her back hit the rough sand, she felt the bite of a shell on her legs and grimaced. Pushing back up to the surface, she rubbed her leg and looked at Zuko before looking back at the sky.
The sunset faded and the moment passed.

You’re a queen now, so one would think you’d be in a better mood.
You sit stoically next to your new husband at the head of an incredibly long dining table in the Great Hall. The hall is aptly named, it’s ornate with beautiful slate floors and vaulted ceilings. Above there’s a heavenly host of glowing lights; hundreds of candles burning bright in chandeliers hoisted up to the rafters. You try to concentrate on the room, focus on the details of your new surroundings. There’s abounding beauty in this kingdom, at least from what little you’ve seen since your arrival twenty-four hours ago.
Lebanon, The Land of the Wolves as many call it, is ten times of the size of the small country of Avalon that your father rules over. You grew up in a country castle, surrounded by meadows and forests. A far contrast to the city outside these walls. Avalon wouldn’t be remarkable at all if it wasn’t for the unending reserve of Cuthert steel, the strongest metal in existence. It’s also the reason you’re here. This marriage ensures your father will never sell Cuthert to any of Lebanon's enemies. Sam gets a wife and insurance, while your father will reap the benefits of having such a powerful ally.
You are a bartering chip in a world of powerful men.
You glance at your father, who’s several guests down the table, doing his best to look pleased. Neither of you is thrilled with this arrangement, but you are his only daughter and he needs this alliance with the Kingdom of Lebanon.
Father has told you time and time again that if he could go back he’d raise you differently, he’d raise you like the lady your position requires instead of being thrown in with your brothers to fight in the mud. By the time he realized you were rejecting the constraints of aristocratic society you were nearly sixteen. Overnight his little girl went from being free to run through the fields to being fitted for dresses and hosting foreign guests. Over the years you’ve learned to play the part, to subdue the wild side. But you would prefer to ride and run and hike.
Your mother is smiling freely, no doubt a result of too much wine. She’s never approved of your unrestrained impulses and has been thrilled at the idea of marrying you off. If it weren’t for your father you’d have been matched up and shipped off years ago.
-
“Samuel is a good man,” your father whispered into your ear as he held you tight, moments before the ceremony. Perhaps he is but that’s not what the townspeople say. “I hope you can be happy here.”
“As do I.” You took a deep breath and tightened your grip. For the first time in your life, you were scared. Truly frightened. Having lived a charmed life, you’d had little occasion for fear. Being a princess the only people who challenged you were your father and your brothers, you were too stubborn for even your mother to try to control. Now you’ll be expected to bow to the desires of your husband, a man you barely know.
As you pulled away from the only man you’ve ever obeyed, you shifted in your wedding gown.
“He is a good man,” he repeated, cupping your face in his hands. In that moment it became crystal clear that he was trying to convince himself as much as you. “And you will be a queen now. That’s a responsibility not to be taken lightly.”
He kissed your cheek and turned on his heels walking away before you had a chance to respond.
-
You’ve heard stories of the prince turned king your whole life.
The Great King John’s sons are known through many kingdoms.
Sam is the dark one, the one people whisper about. King John sent his sons to battle in the East Lands just after Sam came of age. Almost immediately the youngest prince went missing and was assumed dead. Lebanon mourned and the battle raged on. Months became years and then one day word reached King John that his youngest son was indeed alive. And, as the story goes, the man that came back those years later was not the same Winchester that left.
Within 2 years of Sam’s return, his father died, then his mother. And Sam’s brother Dean, the natural heir, refused the throne. No one pretends to know why, it’s just another layer to the Winchester mystery.
Depending on who you’re talking to Sam is a sadistic, brute of a man who has an insatiable taste for killing. In some stories, he’s a wild monster that transforms into a creature of the night and flies with the moon in search of children to devour.
Your handmaidens are the ones who told you of his reputation with women. The few rumors they recounted made your blood run cold. They murmured about women who spent a night with him and were never heard from again, their screams the last thing anyone ever heard.
--
Sam greets his many guests, a line of men congratulating him one by one. Some offer gifts, stacking heavy boxes at his feet. Others simply tell him of the many presents that await him, a parcel of land, a dozen goats. They chuckle and clink glasses and all have something to say about you. Mostly it’s acknowledgments of your beauty followed by an elbow to his ribs.
He seems to be amicable. Most of the men in the room are members of his personal guard or hunting companions, all of whom seem to genuinely have affection for your new husband and he for them.
If nothing else he’s handsome. You didn’t know what to expect but you couldn’t quell the relief you felt when you saw him in person the first time. Of all the men you could have been paired with, he doesn’t seem to be a bad option, so far.
He’s barely spoken a word to you since the ceremony, in fact, you get the distinct feeling the night could continue on just the same without you.
“Do need anything wife?” His words rip you from your thoughts, and you look at Sam as he leans closer. He’s an impressive specimen of a man, there no denying his pleasant face and large build. It could be much worse, several years ago your mother attempted to pair you up with a suitor three times your age who was nearly as tall as he was round and had a violent temper.
“I have everything I need.” You smile, raising your wine to him.
“Good.” He nods, looking at you expressionless. “Do you wish to stay for the celebration?”
He’s asking if you’re ready for your wedding night, giving you a choice.
“I defer to your preference,” you reply, trying to keep your cool
“Let’s hope you’re always this agreeable,” he mutters, sitting back in his chair, turning to his brother on his opposite side.

The Estuary
Full Circle
What have I done to deserve this? He floated in the stagnant waters, thoughts empty save for the image of Elizabeth soaked in red. He could still feel the fabric of her dress against his skin, and the contrast of the blood with her pale face.
The sky looked down on him. For the first time, it began to rain.
What monsters slit a girl's throat?
James couldn't tell if it was the rain or his own tears spilling over his face. Both, probably. Between the estuary and the rain, he was soaked all the way through. He might have worried about getting sick if he wasn't already dead.
The rain poured down in torrents, turning the banks to mud. Even the dense forest couldn't provide shelter from the rain.
Eventually, James dragged himself out of the water. He was alone; even the animals were hiding. And there he was, dripping wet, water sliding off his skin.
His muscles moved of their own accord. He couldn't just sit; he needed to do, because that was what he'd always done. When his father died, he worked off the shock. When he'd hit rock bottom in Tortuga, he drank away the pain. When he knew he'd made the wrong choices, he tried to fix them. He died for them. He'd always done something, even if not the right thing, but in this place, there was nothing for him to do.
So he ran. He ran until his muscles screamed and he couldn't breathe, and continued on until he couldn't feel anything at all. He kept going, rain obscuring his vision, until he collapsed. Until he physically wasn't able to run any longer.
When he got back up again, the rain had stopped. There, in the water next to him, was the vision of a child in a cradle. He stared at the watery reflection of that time.
The beginning.
He traced his fingers through the water. He could go and relive his life, make it better. He could make friends. He could be normal. He knew everything he needed to rise in the ranks. This time around, he needed to focus on different goals.
He would live emotionally. He would learn what it was like to feel again, and he would feel everything so deeply, it would tear him apart. More than anything, it was what he wanted. To feel.
And to be felt for in return.
~~~~~
James sat near the window, looking out over the Caribbean sea. The house was so familiar, but new at the same time. It was decorated differently, to be sure. That had been his wife's choice.
Elizabeth.
It had been a shock when she had accepted his proposal. Things had been different, of course. He'd been nicer to her when they were younger, more open and less stiff. She liked him better that way.
But she still didn't like him. Not really. She married him because he was the best option. She was kind to him; they were close, but only in the way of friends. She did not love him, and though it broke his heart, he pretended they were a happy couple.
He had never been all that good at pretending.
He'd had a better life. There was no denying the benefit of being closer to people. Of letting himself be emotional. Of feeling. It was such a refreshing change.
It was painful, too. He woke up every morning next to a woman he loved with every fiber of his soul. Perhaps some things couldn't be changed. Perhaps, no matter how many cycles of this life he went through, his love would forever be unrequited.
That was the problem. He loved, he loved, he loved. That was what hurt him most.
It was tiring. He was so old. He could feel it, deep inside. He didn't belong, not anymore. He'd lived so much longer than he deserved. He was exhausted, but at least he'd gotten that far. He'd gotten far enough that he wasn't afraid to leave.
I'm exhausting a world that doesn't want me.
He often felt like he was something different, something unlike anyone else. And he was. He didn't belong in the world of the living anymore.
It had been good. That second life. It had been beautiful, painted more vividly than he remembered life ever being.
But he still failed when it came to her. She was the same as always, with her flowing hair and freckled skin, her bright eyes and taste for the unknown. He catered to her as much as he could, but there were some things he couldn't give her. In return, there were some things she couldn't give him.
Maybe it had been selfish to cage her up. Maybe the first time, life had been better for her. It was a life she wouldn't know, now. The hunger for it sat deep within her chest. Some days, when he watched her curl her toes into the sand, he could almost see it break free and run across the waves. Her spirit danced in the waters and climbed the rocks, and all the while she stood still. But she watched. She watched herself do all those things and her toes curled in the sand.
She desired something so much bigger than him. Something so much greater than her reality. He wasn't enough; he never had been.
It was amazing to him, that her whole world was the whole world, and that his whole world was her. He could trace trees in her arms, and oceans on her stomach, and he could find all the life on earth in her eyes. But to her, he was just a man.
He rose from his chair as the sun dipped over the horizon. It sank into the waves, and he sank into bed, stroking Elizabeth's hair as they lay together.
He pressed his face into her hair. He didn't want to look at her eyes, which betrayed her and told him she didn't want him. "Are you happy?" He whispered. His breath tickled the hairs at the base of her neck.
She hesitated. "Of course."
Lie to me again. Please. He couldn't stop the tears falling over his cheeks. They were silent testaments. Hadn't he known from the beginning?
He'd taken the hard path. He'd put in so much work, and relived years that weren't his to have. He'd tried. That was the sad part. He'd tried. And still, he got nothing.
There was no fulfilling his life. Not truly.
~~~~~
When he woke, it wasn't next to a woman that didn't love him.
He was back on the banks of the estuary, face reflected in the brackish water. It's been a long time. For James, it was like coming home. He didn't hate that thought; there was a sort of melancholy feeling that accompanied it, but he wasn't so desperate for redemption.
He'd gotten to taste the forbidden fruit. It had been worth every last bite to become just that much wiser. Now he knew he needed to move on.
He was in the estuary, his old life behind him, a new one ahead. He stared long and hard at the waters of the river. It had taught him, and he had grown.
"Thank you." It was the first time he'd spoken aloud in that place. "Thank you."
With a last glance, he tore his gaze away and pulled himself onto the muddy banks. Moss squelched underfoot as he walked on. Birds chirped, and he glimpsed a deer through the trees.
Every sound and every feeling got sharper as he neared the ocean. The waves crashed over rocks and sand, a rhythm that called to him over the fear of the unknown.
It was time for him to submit to the waters one last time.
He waded into the waves, the familiar sound of them lapping at the shore. Up to his waist, his fingers trailed in the water, creating little ripples on the surface. The river may have shown his past, but the ocean held memories that danced behind his eyes.
Up to his chest. It was cool, and a salty breeze ruffled his hair, just like it always had. He'd spent so much of his life on the ocean. Hours and weeks and months and years at sea. What terrors did it hold for him? He'd weathered the storms and fought for his country. He'd faced sickness, sunstroke, and humiliation. He risked his life again and again, and was fortunate enough to have survived for so long.
Up to his neck. The ocean had been his home. Along with its hardships came its peace, its beauty. How many days had he gazed at the sun reflected off the waves? Hadn't he swam in its embrace? Did it not calm him?
The waters closed over his head, leaving him completely submerged. His eyes were closed, his body relaxed. Somehow, he knew that even if he reached up, he wouldn't break the surface. His feet no longer touched the sand beneath him. He floated in darkness. Slowly, he released the air in his lungs.
After all, how could he be facing the unknown when the ocean had been a part of him for so long?

89 for jey/faith? :D
o my gosh thank u so much!! I did my best here, but as always, writing Faith is a struggle (since we really don’t see much of her actual personality in-game. Here’s hoping I didn’t butcher everything!
(I don’t want to bombard people with a bunch of words, so I put it below the break lol)
“I still can’t believe I bought a bow,” Jey mumbled, trying to move her hands into the correct position. Guns were simple. She should’ve stuck to her good old SBS, not bothered with this hunting crap.
Jess gave her a single quick look before letting out a groan. “Jesus Christ, Jey, how hard can it be to– oh, fuck’s sake, give it to me.”“No!” Jey protested, clutching the bow to her chest. “I may be bad at this, but I still want to give it a shot!”“Yeah, yeah, yeah. You’re not giving anything a shot with the way you’re holding that. You’re supposed to- just look at me.” Jess pulled an arrow back, years of practice evident in the deadly elegance of her form.
Attempting to copy her for the third time that afternoon, Jey slipped and fell flat on her back.
Jess sighed. When she offered her arm, it was obvious that she was beyond exasperated, but a hint of amusement glittered behind her eyes. “Come on, up you go.”
Jey whined, feeling a copious amount of mud stick to the back of her shirt as Jess pulled her back off the ground. “I hate this.”“Yeah, so do I.” Jess glanced at the bushes, adjusting her hold on the arrow. “That’s our dinner. You’re gonna have to figure it out yourself.”
Jey tried to shake off some of the mud, feeling like a wet dog. “Okay. Meet you back here at five?”“Got it.” Without another word, and hardly another sound, Jess disappeared into the wilderness. Crazy, how she could just do that. It was true, what people said about Jess being a master huntress, a predator even the wolves feared.
Jey turned back to the Henbane, which was, as always, flowing steadily along its path. In the distance, the hills rose high and forbidding. The best game was in the Whitetails, but Jey didn’t want to face Jacob again; he still had it out for her in his region, after all, and the second she stepped foot in the mountains, there would be five capture parties on her tail within minutes.
To be honest, she was too tired to actively hunt. These hunting trips were mostly for Jess’s benefit. It was nice to take a break, though. Jess bagged enough game for both of them, and usually extra, so Jey didn’t really have to do anything herself.
She sat down on the shore, watching the river flow. This always brought back fuzzy memories, full of pale green mist and whispered words, that stirred up a wild tumult of sadness, and anger, and grief. Vaguely, she knew that those moments were the place that she had met Faith.
Faith…
Jey ignored the sharp clench of her chest. The first few days after killing Faith had been like hell. Constant shame, constant pain, everyone around her congratulating her for something she wished she hadn’t done. But as time passed, so did those feelings. Virgil and Marshal Burke deserved justice.
Even if what Faith had done to them hadn’t been her choice.
Every time Jey’s mind went back to the world of the Bliss, she came back to reality less sure of Faith’s appearance, of the sound of her voice. At this point, weeks after Faith’s death, she could hardly recall what her face had looked like at all. Jey hadn’t exactly been conscious during those episodes, after all. She didn’t know why it bothered her. Again, Faith was her enemy, and a Herald. Jey should not have felt anything but hatred for her.
Was this what the people had meant when they had said that she poisoned people’s minds?
No. This wasn’t Jey’s mind.
For lack of better phrasing, Faith had poisoned Jey’s heart.
Damn, did that sound cheesy. But, honestly, process of elimination: she didn’t hate Faith, she didn’t want to forget what should have been a traumatic experience, what else could it be?Jey squinted at the other side of the river, trying to make out what appeared to be a woman on the other side. Not many people were here. So who would be? Probably a resistance soldier, maybe a member of the Whitetail Militia who’d strayed down. They were close enough to the border for that.
“Hey,” Jey called out, waving to the woman. “You lost?”She froze. Even from this distance, Jey could see a certain unnatural movement in the woman, sort of… shaky. Like she had sea legs.
Jey stood up, brow creasing. “Come here. It’s okay,” she reassured the woman, when she saw the tension in her only increasing.
When the woman made no movement, Jey waded into the water. Something wasn’t right here, and she’d be damned if she wouldn’t try to fix it. The woman stepped back as Jey neared her, looking dangerously close to turning tail and running into the woods, but ultimately continued to stay still- although she kept on shivering.
The water reached up to Jey’s chest, but she plowed on. A sense of urgency reached higher than the water did, whispering to her heart that she needed to keep going. Besides, being in this deep was a good thing. It’d wash the mud off.
Finally, she reached the shore, only to freeze in her tracks when she saw the woman up close.
Scared green eyes surrounded by dark circles. Those soft features, those trembling hands. The hair that wasn’t tinged with green, unkempt, golden, a touch more wavy than Jey remembers it. The details clarified themselves in her memory.
Total silence for two moments. The birds stop chirping. The wind pauses in its rush across the river. Or maybe it’s the sudden pounding in Jey’s ears that makes the world seem so quiet, a manifestation of the feelings that she’d thought were gone.
“Faith?” Her voice was barely above a whisper.
The woman took a single step forward. “Rachel,” she said, voice shaking just as much as her body was. “Rachel… Jessop.”
Jey wanted to cry, but whether it was in rage or grief or fear or hope or happiness, she didn’t know. Rachel Jessop. The name that was lost to Faith Seed.
A tear slipped down Faith’s cheek, and Jey could feel her own eyes welling up. What was this? She had seen Faith fall dead into that river. To have her back was… wrong, yes, but also so incredibly right.
Maybe her heart had made the right call.
“I didn’t think you would remember,” Faith murmured. Her voice broke in a sob. “I- I didn’t think you could. The Bliss-”
The Bliss. Of course. The shaking- it wasn’t fear, it was withdrawal. “Of course I remember,” Jey interrupted her, somewhere between laughing and breaking down into tears. “I could never forget you.” Without thinking- which was becoming the norm- Jey stepped closer, running a hand along Faith’s cheek- had she ever even touched her before? Was she normally this soft?
She looked into the other woman’s eyes, searching for any trace of hesitation.
She found none.
Letting out a breath, Jey glanced from Faith’s eyes to her lips. The desire was there, but so was everything else; so many questions, circling her head. Why are you here? Why are you alive? What are these emotions? What do I feel for you?
She looked into Faith’s eyes, and found the same answer that had always been.
Oh, Deputy. Have faith.
Except this time, it isn’t a warning. It isn’t a threat, or a means to an end. It’s just her.
It’s just Faith, in the flesh, facing Jey.
She must have waited too long, because in the space of a second, Faith surged forward and kissed her. It’s somewhere between innocent and seductive, just like the tightrope that the old Faith had walked so perilously. But it isn’t the old Faith. It isn’t the Siren.
They separated, and Jey felt some sense of confidence come back to her.
Fighting off the need to cry, she pulled Faith into a hug. And she’s real. And she’s solid, and this isn’t the Bliss, and she’s here.
“Welcome back, Faith,” Jey whispered. “Let’s go home.”
