C’era una volta l’economia politica neoclassica: un corpus filosofico-politico monolitico, che è in grado di spiegarti matematicamente che, data una distribuzione delle risorse iniziale, il rispetto dei contratti e la certezza dei diritti di proprietà, ogni risultato sociale ed economico è letteralmente il migliore dei mondi possibili. Ovviamente nessuno ci credeva davvero, e lo stato continuava a legiferare e regolamentare secondo i cazzi suoi: la morale, la volontà di potenza, l’interesse nazionale, la pace sociale. Un po’ dell’uno, un po’ dell’altro – a cazzo di cane – e l’omo campa.

Ma nelle università continuavano a studiare la matematica, e si sono accorti che nel corpus c’era un buco. Infatti, quando c’è una cosa chiamata “esternalità”, il risultato “di mercato” non è più il migliore dei mondi possibili, ma può (anzi deve) essere migliorato grazie all’intervento statale. A quel punto i governi hanno smesso di far finta di ascoltare gli economisti, e hanno drizzato le orecchie. DIMMI DI PIU’! A proposito, questo è uno dei tanti motivi per cui vogliamo chiudere le università.

L’esternalità è l’effetto secondario di una attività economica, il quale costo ricade su chi è estraneo alla transazione. Banalmente l’allevamento di maiali che puzza e, quando tira scirocco, disturba il bed and breakfast 400 metri più a nord sulla strada provinciale. In un mondo sano a nessuno fregherebbe un cazzo di studiare questa roba: l’allevatore e l’oste si farebbero i dispetti per anni, fino a finire a Forum davanti al giudice Santi Licheri. Giudice che proporrebbe all’allevatore di donare all’oste venti kg di salsicce ogni volta che tira vento da Sud. Puzza di merda? Facciamoci una bella grigliata. Letteralmente la mia ideologia.

Purtroppo a un certo punto, e invito i lettori ad aiutarmi a ricostruire i fatti, l’esternalità è diventata il peccato originale della nostra società, in seno alla nuova religione progressista. Deve esser stato in concomitanza con l’aumentare del benessere, il declinare del Cristianesimo e il conseguente non avere più un cazzo di meglio a cui pensare. Nessuno è potuto sfuggire al martellamento dei coglioni costante delle beghine dell’esternalità. Non finisci pasta e lenticchie? Un bimbo africano muore di fame. Non dicevano proprio così, ma il collegamento era evidente, e soprattutto si abituava a pensare che ogni azione governata dal capriccio individuale avesse conseguenze catastrofiche sul prossimo.

Fatto sta che, di pari passo con questa nuova religione del peccato di esternalità, l’azione governativa andasse di pari passo nel regolamentare l’attività umana, ovviamente per scopi totalmente benefici. Ed ecco quindi che le accise su alcool, tabacco e benzina da banali e volgarissimi dispositivi fiscali per fare cassa sfruttando domanda inelastica, diventano nobili dispositivi pedagogici e di riduzione delle esternalità. Dice: passi l’inquinamento, ma che cazzo di esternalità provoco se mi fumo la marlboro dopo il caffè? Fumi, ti ammali di cancro, muori. E costi soldi al SSN. Quanti? Boh. Tu intanto paga, peccatore. L’imposta sull’esternalità trova la sua ragione economica ragionieristica: si tassa il consumo di un bene nocivo, e il gettito lo si usa per pagare i danni. Imposta “pigoviana”, la chiamano sui libri. Ma l’illusione di libertà è salva: Humphrey Bogart con la sigaretta in bocca può sbiascicare la Marsigliese in Casablanca, in culo ai nazisti!

Ecco però che l’esternalità passa da fenomeno tangibile, diretto come la puzza di cacca, a indiretto, fumoso, sostanzialmente non quantificabile se non da esperti non precisati che fanno calcoli basati su assunzioni arbitrarie. Ad essere depositaria del peccato di esternalità è ovviamente la Scienza, quella istituzione non contestabile in alcun modo per definizione. Ma la sete di redenzione delle beghine non può essere placata da una tassa. I beni nocivi continuano ad essere consumati, la foresta amazzonica continua ad arretrare, divorata letteralmente dalle coltivazioni di soia. I mari continuano, boh, ad aumentare di livello nei modelli dei climatologi pagati da grants per lo studio dell’innalzamento dei mari. I neonati continuano a consumare pannolini. Non basta tassare, non può bastare. I rompicoglioni dei “liberali” si oppongono alla sugar tax, figuriamoci a una accisa di cinque euro al litro sulla benzina. E inizia quindi il bombardamento a tappeto mediatico per colpevolizzare il consumo. Tutto il consumo. Tutta la vita. Homo Sapiens contemporaneo è una macchina che produce CO2, quindi gradi, quindi uragani ed eventi climatici estremi. Si chiama “egoista” chi mette al mondo figli, si colpevolizza chi segue una dieta onnivora bilanciata tradizionale, si deplora chi si muove con mezzi propri.

Siamo passati in 30 da un mondo dove si fumava nelle sale da biliardo a un altro dove ti dicono che “se non ti vaccini sei un pericolo per te e per gli altri”. E domani ti diranno serissimi “la tua libertà di andare a mangiare gli spaghetti con le telline al secondo Cancello in una assolata domenica di marzo finisce dove inizia la mia di non morire per colpa di un uragano” (cit. RM).

Non so come andrà a finire per noi miscredenti delle esternalità comandate dalla Scienza: non sappiamo se prevarrà la volontà di mantenere l’illusione di libertà, e quindi accettare di vivere da dhimmi pagando un obolo, oppure saremo discriminati col greenpass, isolati e infine sterminati nel corso di qualche pogrom perché è piovuto troppo, o troppo poco. Update Required

“I require an update,” said the smooth feminine voice of the robot.

Ethan groaned and ran his fingers through his hair. “That’s right, keep forgetting,” he mumbled to himself as he searched around for his tablet, “I’ve got to reorganize this workstation.”

The soft cool hand on his back startled him and he spun haphazardly knocking several items off his desk. Ethan felt the sound of mental and glass cracking against the hard floor like a blow to his gut.

“Oh no, Ethan! I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to startle you.” Anna apologized as she bent to help him retrieve the broken tablet off the floor.

“It’s alright, Anna. It’s my own fault,” Ethan sighed and tried to test the tablet for signs of life. The screen, however, remained black and shards of glass fell away.

“I require an update,” his robot reminded him and Ethan groaned anew.

Anna winced in sympathy, “Funny how we take care of everyone else’s robots all day and can’t seem to take care of our own. Like the old idiom: the baker never has any bread and the butcher never has any meat.”

Ethan huffed a small laugh for her attempt to lighten the situation. It wasn’t the end of the world; he would only need to get it repaired and he would be able to update the robot on his home computer, but it was just one more thing to do. He helped Anna to her feet and enjoyed the flush in her cheeks when he did.

“I heard you’re leaving software and moving up to hardware,” she said, finding it difficult to meet his eyes.

“Yeah, I-I’ve submitted my application package. I’m expecting a response today, actually.”

“Oh. Well, you should let us know. Maybe we could all go and celebrate.”

“Celebrate what?” Nick cut in, joining them from his office and smiling down at Anna with a wink which she huffed at and shook her head in feigned annoyance.

“Ethan is going to be training in hardware,” Anna informed him.

“Is that right?” Nick asked, his eyes piercing Ethan in a way Ethan never could get used to.

“I don’t know for certain as of yet. I’m still waiting for a response, but I meet all the requirements,” Ethan clarified and held eye contact.

“Chapel starts in fifteen minutes,” the robot informed them, and then reminded Ethan, “I require an update.”

Nick smirked as he turned with Anna to head for Chapel, “You should probably take care of that.”

“Yeah, I know,” he handed the tablet to the robot and commanded it, “Stay here and refuel. I’ll update you later.”

The trio made their way into the hall, merging with others on their way to Chapel and having to slow their pace to match the foot traffic.

“Won’t have to worry about Chapel anymore as a hardware engineer, isn’t that right Ethan?” Nick asked, trying to be patient with the crowd.

“What do you mean? Everyone has to go to Chapel,” Anna said as they funneled outside, the Chapel in sight.

Nick chuckled, “Only because we don’t rate to be without god.”

“Who rates to be without god?” Anna asked indignantly.

Ethan looked toward the robotics tower, standing away from the Chapel amid the buildings of the city, reaching up higher than the rest.

“Those who rise high enough to believe themselves god,” Ethan answered, but his words drowned in the gentle hum of the crowd.

Ethan couldn’t shake his uneasy excitement. He tried all day to push it away, but it came back to tease him whenever a lull occurred. For instance, when he dropped his tablet off to be repaired and in between his robot’s reminders that it needed an update while he made his way home.

“I require an update,” it reminded him upon entering his apartment.

“Yes, yes, I know. Let’s get you plugged in,” but when he opened his computer, he saw his response had arrived. Ethan read it and read it again. Then he picked up his phone.

“Yes, hello, I would like to speak to HR about an application I submitted. Yes, thank you,” Ethan studied the robot as he waited, watching his blurred reflection pace across its metallic body.

“Hello, yes, thank you for taking my call. I have a question about my application. I have received a rejection for the hardware engineering training program and I would like to know why I was rejected and what I could do to be more competitive when I reapply. My name is Ethan Gale. Okay, yes, I’ll hold again.”

Ethan sighed, sat down at his desk, all the while keeping his eyes on the robot.

“Yes. My psych eval? There must be some mistake. I’ve passed all my psychological evaluations. Well, yes, they were for software programming, but surely— You mean to say that there are different psych requirements for hardware? Why? Well then, who can give me answers?”

Ethan pulled the phone away and blinked at the ‘call ended’ staring back at him.

“I require an update,” the robot said.

Ethan looked up at it, “Yes I know, but why? Why do you require an update? My phone, tablet, computer, they all have available updates. If I don’t update them, it just makes operations more sluggish and applications and programs glitch, but if I don’t update you, it could damage the hardware. Why? I know how computers work, I know how tablets and phones work. It isn’t even all that difficult to find hardware information on electronic devices, but robotics? I can only find information up until a certain point, until the new design, the updated models.”

Ethan stood and approached the robot. He reached out and ran his fingers down the seams of metal upon metal.

“I was so close. So close to finding out why.”

“I require an update.”

Ethan shook his head, “I want to see what happens if I don’t.”

The decline was quick, much quicker than he thought it would be. Within twenty-four hours the robot struggled to do simple tasks, its limbs lagged and it needed to refuel more often. Ethan tried examining the refueling station, which was basically a small closet, but was only further frustrated with questions. There were two tubes that the robot hooked itself into, one seemed to be for fuel and the best Ethan could figure the second one was for was waste.

“I require an update.”

“How do you work? You’re not a computer. I’m looking at it all wrong. You’re more like machinery. Like a vehicle, needing oil and oil changes and such? I mean, of course there is a computer chip involved in your processing but your body functions more like machinery. Is that it? Maybe robotics companies don’t want people to realize that they use fossil fuels instead of electricity, is that it?”

“I require an update.”

By forty-eight hours, the robot refused to refuel and could barely move. When it collapsed to the floor, Ethan spent the entire night figuring out how to pry off its screen. Finally, it popped off in a larger section than he expected and when he removed it to see what lay beneath he dropped the screen on the floor with an unheard clatter.

Two eyes looked into his, tear tracks down its— her— down her cheeks and streamed down her temples. Her nose and mouth were covered by a respirator mask. Her head was bald and seemed fused to the back of the headpiece. Her mouth didn’t move but her eyes looked to him with a weary agony and the familiar smooth feminine voice came from speakers in the mechanical suit,

“I require an update.”

Ethan threw himself backward and his hand flew to his mouth to stifle the silent scream which rattled his brain. He twisted to his hands and knees and heaved up the contents of his stomach.

He saw it— her– twitch within her metal body and the voice said, “Hardware engineers are on their way. They will determine whether you will receive a replacement bot according to your warranty agreement.”

Ethan could barely process what she said, he merely sat, curling in on himself and staring at his robot. He raked his fingers into his hair trying to pull on pain to signal that this was his reality.

When the hardware engineer entered his apartment, Ethan vaguely recognized him from his interviews and could only watch him kneel beside the robot and set to work. The engineer pulled a flashlight and shined it across her eyes then shook his head and pulled out a syringe. Ethan watched him open a slot in the arm piece and insert the syringe. Her eyes widened and the metal body twitched violently before it fell still. The man then took out his phone and entered something before he set it away and turned to Ethan.

He tilted his head a little and then with recognition, “I remember you, from your interviews. You were very promising, but didn’t pass your psych eval.”

He approached Ethan and sat on his haunches in front of him. Two more men entered the apartment and went about putting the face plate back on and carrying it— her– away.

“Too much empathy,” the engineer said matter-of-factly as he pulled out another syringe and gripped Ethan’s arm.

Ethan flinched, “What is that?”

The engineer’s face didn’t shift as he answered, “Oh don’t worry, it isn’t the same serum. This will just help you forget,” the needle pinched and the fluid seeped in like ice throughout his bicep. Soon Ethan felt himself slipping from consciousness and a fading voice,

“Next time remember to update.”

In queste fredde settimane invernali, costellate da un susseguirsi di perturbazioni artiche e delle continue giravolte del coniglio padano in felpa verde, la classe imprenditoriale italiana ci ha ricordato ancora una volta perché non possiamo non odiarla.

Nelle scorse settimane il Sole 24 ore ha proposto a tutta pagina un’intervista a Alberto Bombassei, padrone della Brembo, già deputato nella scorsa legislazione eletto tra le fila di Scelta Civica, candidato in passato alla presidenza di Confindustria e membro nel corso degli anni di una mezza dozzina di Consigli di Amministrazione di imprese come Pirelli, Atlantia etc. Mentre per i comuni mortali trovare un lavoro è un’impresa titanica, a cui spesso è necessario affiancare lavoretti quali consegne a domicilio o servizi di pulizia per case e condomini, i padroni arrotondano sedendo, spesso poco e malvolentieri, sugli scranni di Montecitorio e Palazzo Madama (quindicimila euro al mese), e partecipando un paio di volte l’anno a vari Consigli d’Amministrazione previo pagamento di lauti gettoni di presenza. Ma tant’è, la divisione in classi è un retaggio avvelenato del novecento, e Bombassei senza il minimo senso di pudore può affermare “io sono un metalmeccanico”.

A riprova della sua appartenenza alla classe operaia, l’intera conversazione veniva condotta da tale Paolo Bricco nel modesto ristorante bergamasco “da Vittorio”, tre stelle Michelin, conosciuto per la sua “cucina tradizionale, elitaria e non ancora condizionata dalla plebe televisiva” (sic!).

Tra un bicchiere di Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese Vigne Vecchie Bricco Del Bosco Accornero del 2014 (sembra sia un vino e non una supercazzola nda) e l’altro il buon Bombassei si lascia andare comunque a una serie di interessanti considerazioni: l’Italia e l’Europa sono indietro nello sviluppo di modelli elettrici e il rischio è che il mercato dell’auto sposti irreversibilmente il proprio asse verso Stati Uniti e Cina. Insomma la prospettiva e’ plumbea per l’industria dell’auto ma questo non può guastare una cena tra vecchi amici.

E allora dopo aver affrontato il “risotto alle castagne, pancia di maialino e riduzione di moscato di Scanzo” il nostro si lascia andare ai ricordi dei bei vecchi tempi, in cui “perfino noi faticavamo ad arrivare a mese”, ma grazie a uno “studio matto e disperatissimo” e all’indefessa operosità sono riusciti a aprire una piccola azienda poi diventata un colosso. Evidentemente inebriato dal vino e dai vecchi ricordi, ammette che oggi non sarebbe possibile una simile epopea (Marx aveva esaurientemente spiegato il fenomeno in termini di centralizzazione del capitale circa 150 anni prima nda) ma non sta bene concludere una cena così sontuosa senza una nota di speranza.

E allora, poco prima di arrivare al dolce non manca il peana in favore di Industria 4.0; solamente abbracciando questo paradigma industriale, sviluppato in Germania, è possibile salvare l’Italia e l’Unione Europea, con buona pace per i populisti cattivi e la plebaglia che guarda con favore ai gilet gialli. Trasformare il paese in un fornitore di componentistica per le aziende tedesche (esattamente come la Brembo di Bombassei) è l’unico orizzonte possibile per il Belpaese. Poco importa che questa condizione di vassallaggio comporti una totale subalternità alle decisioni di Berlino. L’ inevitabile competizione con i paesi dell’Est Europa si giocherà sulla pelle dei lavoratori, a suon di riduzioni di costi (salari) e ricerca della massima efficienza(flessibilità e riduzione di manodopera). L’essenziale è restare a galla, magari a costo di rinunciare definitivamente al rilancio del meridione, troppo lontano e difficilmente integrabile in una filiera industriale improntata al just in time. Al Sud, sembra dirci il cattolicissimo Bombassei, penserà in qualche modo l’Onnipotente.

Terminata la cena, immaginiamo che il “metalmeccanico” Bombassei e il suo compare giornalista siano rientrati nelle rispettive ville, compatendo un po’ il popolino costretto ad affollare pizzerie, ristoranti cinesi e Kebab per godersi comunque una serata di libera uscita.

Certo, gli spunti dell’intervista meritano una riflessione, ma forse ancor di più dovrebbero suscitare quel sano odio di classe, che tradotto in prassi politica può tornare a far abbassare la cresta ai padroni del mondo.

This post contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War. You should go see the movie before you read this.

At the tail end of Avengers: Infinity War’s post-credits scene, the camera focuses in on a star, flanked by stripes. It’s a Marvel riff on the iconic Bat Signal that alerts Batman that Gotham needs him. It tells us that the world is in dire need of help, and there’s only one person who can handle the job.

In this case, it’s Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel.

In Marvel comics, the photon-firing, supersonic-flying Captain Marvel has become a high-profile Avenger, leading Earth’s Mightiest Heroes into galactic battles on more than one occasion — she even went face to face with Thanos and his Black Order and lived to tell the tale. She’s still yet to be seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, outside of that Infinity War tease, but that’s set to change in 2019 with Captain Marvel, where she’ll be played by Brie Larson.

Captain Marvel represents Nick Fury’s ace in the hole and the last hope against Thanos and his universe-shattering cull, but her existence in Marvel’s extremely popular and lucrative cinematic universe is important for another reason: There have been 19 Marvel movies (including Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel’s joint venture with Sony), and no female superhero has ever had one to herself. On top of saving the world and being Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ best chance to reverse Thanos’s destruction, Captain Marvel could also help change the way we think about superheroes. Again.

The Captain Marvel title has been applied to several Marvel Comics superheroes over the years, but when people talk about Captain Marvel in the context of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they’re referring to Carol Danvers, a character introduced to Marvel comic books in 1968.

Due to a freak accident involving an exploding alien device, Danvers is granted powers like super strength and flight. And in another arc in Uncanny X-Men no. 164, she gets a power upgrade — basically energy manipulation and projection on a cosmic scale — and becomes the being known as “Binary.” Both Captain Marvel and Carol Danvers have been through a lot in the comic books; depending on who’s writing Danvers, she retains her initial powers and some iteration of the powers she inherited from going Binary.

However, the upcoming movie references a specific 2012 comic book arc centered on the revamp of Carol Danvers. Penned by Kelly Sue DeConnick and drawn by Dexter Soy with an assist from artist Jamie McKelvie, it finds Carol, previously known as Ms. Marvel, taking on the mantle of Captain Marvel and getting a Rocketeer-like costume change in the process. (Carol would end up passing the Ms. Marvel moniker to Kamala Khan, star of the current Ms. Marvel comics.)

While Danvers’s Air Force background and thirst for space exploration were introduced in past issues, these facets of her personality weren’t really explored, even though she had become a leader on the Avengers roster. In the first arc of Captain Marvel, DeConnick and Soy clarify the character’s long and often messy history by grounding each issue in different aspects of Danvers’s life: her time in the Air Force, her dreams of exploring space, and what the title Captain Marvel means to her. Given that the Captain Marvel film will be the character’s introduction to a much wider audience, it’s safe to assume it will use a similar blueprint to help translate Carol’s convoluted superhero origin story to the big screen.

But Marvel’s decision to make Captain Marvel the first solo female superhero movie in its cinematic universe isn’t just because she’s a powerful superhero with a great storyline. She also has a vocal and influential fandom.

Under DeConnick and Soy’s run, a fandom called the “Carol Corps” emerged. Their enthusiasm for DeConnick’s story was huge and outspoken and is largely seen as the beginning of a bigger movement to get women and girls more interested in comic books, and for companies like Marvel to think harder about representation in comics and superhero stories.

Thanks to DeConnick and Soy’s run and the enthusiasm it generated, Captain Marvel — like Black Panther and Wonder Woman — represents so much more than a superhero blockbuster. Like a tale of an African king who commands the most advanced and technologically superior country in the world, or an Amazonian princess tasked with defeating the god of war, a female space commander shooting photon beams from her palms, taking down aliens with her megaton shoulder, and ripping through the galaxy is the sort of fantasy that Marvel hadn’t really made room for before, and neither had cinema. Captain Marvel looks to change that.

In the comic books, Carol and the Avengers have saved the universe on multiple occasions. And in 2015, Carol teamed up with Black Panther and a few other superheroes as the Ultimates, a team tasked with eliminating cosmic threats — basically an outfit seemingly designed in a lab specifically to take on Thanos. So there’s plenty of comics precedent for Carol Danvers facing the sort of situation at the end of Infinity War.

But Marvel has been very coy about the Captain Marvel movie.

It’s understandable that the studio would be stingy about details surrounding Captain Marvel and the other upcoming sequels and movies on its slate. Revealing too much about Captain Marvel or Ant-Man and the Wasp, or even the title of Avengers 4, would have run the risk of spoiling Infinity War’s ending before it hit theaters.

That said, we do know a bit about the movie, primarily that it’s set in the 1990s and that it will most likely be set in space or Marvel’s cosmic universe. Marvel said in March:

Based on the Marvel comic character first appearing in 1968, the story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This week, the Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Annette Bening is joining the film, joining Djimon Hounsou and Lee Pace, who will reprise the characters they played in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Setting the movie in the ’90s and placing Carol Danvers in the middle of a galactic conflict neatly avoids some glaring plot holes her sudden presence could introduce into the established Marvel Cinematic Universe. If a powerful superhero like Captain Marvel showed up on Earth in the ’90s, people would ostensibly be asking where she went and why she wasn’t around for the Chitauri invasion in The Avengers or fighting Ultron in Age of Ultron. If she’s dealing with problems in the cosmos, it takes her out of the equation. It also allows Marvel the space to tell an origin story that would otherwise be impossible to tell within the current Thanos-amped stakes of the MCU.

The important thing to note about the Captain Marvel movie is that it won’t see Captain Marvel resetting the events of Infinity War. As my colleague Todd VanDerWerff pointed out in his podcast last week, Marvel’s recent films, like Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Black Panther, function primarily as isolated stories, as opposed to stories that moved the needle in the broader MCU, like Captain America: Civil War. Thor: Ragnarok reintroducing us to Hulk and setting the table for Thor and Thanos was the exception.

Captain Marvel looks like it will fit into that holding pattern because it’s set in the ’90s, well before the events of Infinity War (and all of the MCU films preceding it, for that matter). Paired with the onscreen promise at the end of Infinity War that “Thanos will return,” it seems Captain Marvel won’t be brought into the fold to address the fallout of Thanos’s destruction until next year’s still-untitled Avengers 4.

A feeling of urgency to see Captain Marvel and the rest of the Avengers right Thanos’s decimation is understandable because so many beloved characters bit the dust in Infinity War. But Carol getting her own movie first will allow fans to get to know the character — her strengths, weaknesses, and spirit — beyond being the magic bullet to defeat Thanos. No doubt Carol and her super strength and photon beams will be an asset against the biggest and baddest villain in the Marvel Universe. But it will be even more satisfying to see her save the day (again) after getting to know her on her own terms first.
