My current #benchpin that I use on my main #jewelry #workbench - I think I've been using this one for about 4-5 years...I tend to keep them for as long as they are #useful which means they aren't crumbling apart from all the #drillholes or notches. Like many #metalsmiths I love my #tools , and the #wood #benchpeg is one of our essentials . A bench peg or bench pin (they are commonly known as both) is perhaps one of the most important tools on the bench. It’s considered a sacrificial piece of equipment in as much as one will drill into it, cut into it, file it as it supports the piece of metal you are working on. Over time it wears away to be replaced with another. BUT during that time it takes on many shapes and forms, it becomes adapted to the task in hand , bits get cut off to allow easy movement of a saw or a file. Notches gouged out to hold the edge of a difficult object. It’s owner becomes used to these marks and adaptations until it’s second nature where to place the workpiece. I have become very fond of my two main bench pins and today I have a lot of drilling to do and so in order to save my pins for a bit longer I have quickly made up a very sacrificial pin that I can merrily drill away at without any worries.
