Hyrule is a fine cook, you guys are just mean.
I will start by pointing out that Wild says the ham water is really tasty. Who is going to be a better judge of the ham water? The one who has eaten nothing but pastries and croissants his whole life?
The lord of pumpkin spice? The army guy who probably lived off of MRE equivalents? The rancher who chugs literal grubs?
Or the one person who is so good with food that he is universally recognized as the cook?
Kudos to you if you chose the grub chugger, nothing wrong with eating bugs, but the correct answer was Wild; Wild is the best choice for judge. Partially because he has 1000x more experience with food variety than the others (statistics taken from my own save files), but mostly because no one else in the group has any significant experience with cooking their own food. Twi did his best helping with that stinky fish for Yeto's soup but it doesn't count.
As the croissant eater points out, the meat looks old.
For it to be old but not have started rotting, it would have to be cured meat (we’ll say ham because what better way to spite Ganon than by eating pig for lunch). Hyrule has probably even upgraded since his first adventure and it’s not just your basic salted ham food (which already costs about the same as a magic shield in game), it’s probably the Hyrulian equivalent of Jamón Ibérico de Bellota from his buddy pal Zelda(s) at the castle. I know I’d give someone a fancy ham for saving my kingdom twice. Hyrule is basically a gourmet at this point. You need quality nutrients to grow healthy hair, as our traveler pointed out, and who has the bestest most fluffiest hair? Hyrule does. Look at the fluffy:
It is absolutely possible to make tasty soup from the most basic 100 rupee cured ham. That’s a real thing that real people do in real life. You can even do it with 50 rupee ham in a can if you’re desperate (I say 50 rupee instead of 25 because of inflation). Hyrule put the bone in too so not only is there the salty flavor from the cured meat, he very well could have been making a nice bone broth for his injured colleague (he could have put other ingredients in off screen too but that’s beside the point). Ever heard of broth based soup? Probably not if you are a croissant eater who never had to cook ham water for yourself on the road. Croissants aren’t even that good unless they have chocolate in the middle, and that’s just because of the chocolate. If you’re going through the effort of laminating all that dough you should just go all the way and make something actually good like pastéis de nata.
Anyway, Hyrule is implied to be a terrible cook and I love that for him. Mostly I just wanted to take this chance to complain about croissants.
#i actually do love lethal chef hyrule please don't be discouraged from writing him that way this was a joke#ham water appreciation#croissant depreciation#grubs aren't that bad either if you were wondering#lu hyrule#linked universe#linkeduniverse#lu analysis

As soon as we were shambled to your room, we were met by the concerned look of Bepo, who seemed to be looking for someone. His fur was standing on end, and his ears were flattened against his head.
His eyes were filled with a mixture of fear and sadness as he frantically searched every corner of the room, his whimpering becoming more desperate with each passing moment.
"Law is gonna kill me if I don't find Y/N," He muttered under his breath.
Relief washed over Bepo's face when he finally turned around to see the both of you on your bed, close together. His frantic search came to an end as he let out a sigh of relief, happy to have found Y/N safe and sound.
"Y/N! Where have you been!?" Bepo yelled in a huff.
"She's been with me," Law answered for you, blushing slightly at being discovered.
"Really?" Bepo asked with a smile, "That's a relief," he said, his fur gradually settling back down as he walked over to join you both on the bed.
"Are you guys together now?" Bepo questioned, his eyes filled with curiosity and a hint of mischief.
Both of you exchanged a shocked glance, unsure of how to answer Bepo's question. The truth was that you and Law were planning on keeping your relationship a secret even for a while, and now you were faced with the unexpected task of revealing it to your furry friend.
"We are," you answered for the both of you, your voice filled with a mix of nervousness and excitement.
Bepo's eyes widened in surprise, followed by a mischievous grin as he playfully nudged Law with his paw. "Well, it's about time you two admitted it. The whole crew has been waiting for you two," he chuckled, his tail wagging happily.
"Bepo," Law said in a warning tone.
"Sorry," Bepo switched immediately, slightly bowing his head in a pout.
You tried to move into a more comfortable position, slightly groaning at the pain from moving your arm.
The sudden movement caught the two of them off guard, causing Law to quickly retract his hand from where it had been resting on your waist, and Bepo to stop his playful teasing and look at you with concern.
"We'll let you get some rest," Bepo said, taking Law by the arm and dragging him out of the room.
As Law was being dragged out of the room by Bepo, he turned back for a moment, giving you a last glance. A smile played on his lips as he pulled his hat down to cover his eyes, leaving you with a warm feeling in your heart.
As they left, you couldn't help but feel grateful for Bepo's understanding and support, knowing that he would keep your secret safe.
You slowly covered your face with your blanket, a mix of embarrassment and happiness washing over you as you replayed the intimate moments you shared with Law in your mind.
You couldn't help but slightly squeal into your pillow, overwhelmed by the rush of emotions and the realization that you and Law were now dating.
You started to speak, but your words were lost in the moment as soon as you felt Law's lips on yours. Your heart raced and you felt the warmth of his body against yours. You were lost in the moment, your mind in a daze as you felt his lips gently move against your own.
All of a sudden, the world around you seemed to stop, and the only thing that mattered was the two of you in that moment. You felt like you were standing on the edge of a cliff, and the only thing keeping you from tumbling down was Law's strong arms around you.
You didn't anticipate that a simple visit to Law would lead to you both confessing your feelings and becoming a couple. The unexpected turn of events left you overwhelmed with a mix of nervousness and excitement, but as you lay in bed, replaying the intimate moments in your mind, you couldn't help but feel grateful for the beautiful connection you now shared with Law. . .
As hours turned into days and Law still hadn't visited you, the anticipation and worry began to gnaw at your heart. Just when you were starting to lose hope, Ikkaku arrived at your doorstep with a happy expression.
She handed you a sealed envelope, saying, "Law asked me to give this to you."
Curiosity and a sense of foreboding filled your mind as you carefully opened the letter, unsure of what it would reveal.
Dear Y/N,
I hope this letter finds you well. I want to apologize for my absence these past few days. I realized that being with you would only hinder your healing process. I wouldn't be able to resist the temptation of being close to you, and I don't want to jeopardize the progress you've made. Please understand that my decision was made out of love and concern for you.
Come to me when you're fully healed.
Sincerely your partner Law.
You felt a mix of emotions as you read Law's letter. Flushed with a combination of disappointment and understanding, you couldn't help but appreciate his thoughtfulness and selflessness in wanting to prioritize your healing process.
Deep down, you knew he was right, but it didn't make the longing for his presence any easier to bear.
"Thank you, Ikkaku," you said, touched by Law's gesture. "I appreciate you delivering this to me."
As she sat down on the end of the bed with a curious look, Ikkaku couldn't help but ask, "So, what did Law say in the letter? Is everything okay?"
"Nothing!" you said, forcing a smile. "Law just wanted to check in and make sure I'm doing alright. He's busy with work, but he'll be here soon. Everything's fine."
Deep down, you couldn't shake the feeling of longing for Law's presence, but you didn't want to burden Ikkaku with your worries.
"I heard that you two are finally dating," Ikkaku mentioned, grinning.
"Let me guess, Bepo told you?" You asked, remembering how happy he was when he found out the news.
"Yeah," she answered, her eyes shining with excitement. "He couldn't contain his joy and spilled the beans. I'm really happy for you both."
You and Ikkaku spent the whole day talking about advice on relationships, sharing stories, and discussing what makes a strong partnership. It was comforting to have her support and guidance during this uncertain time, and it reminded you that you weren't alone in navigating the complexities of love.
For the rest of the days, you focused on recovering, following Bepo's advice and engaging in activities that promoted your physical and emotional well-being.
You immersed yourself in self-care, spending time journaling, practicing mindfulness, and engaging in gentle exercises to aid in your healing process. Each day brought you closer to full recovery, and you found solace in the progress you were making.
As the days passed, you couldn't help but find inspiration in Law's selflessness and concern for your well-being. His letter served as a constant reminder of his love and support, motivating you to push through the challenges of recovery and find solace in the progress you were making. . . .
With a mix of anticipation and nervousness, you took a big breath before standing in front of the door.
After weeks of healing and self-care, you were finally ready to surprise Law with your full recovery and the strength you had gained during this challenging time.
What will he think of you? Will he still like you after all this time? Of course, he would. He makes Bepo get a full health check on you every day for goodness sake!
You knocked on the door and waited for a tired "come in," your heart pounding with excitement and nerves. This was the moment you had been waiting for, the moment to reveal your full recovery and the strength you had gained.
"Come in,"
With a mix of anticipation and nervousness, you turned the doorknob and stepped into the room.
As Law's tired eyes met yours, a mixture of surprise and joy washed over his face, instantly replacing any doubt or worry.
"Y/N," he mumbled, standing up from his chair, disbelief written all over his face. He couldn't believe his eyes as he watched you walk into the room, radiating strength and vitality.
"Hey-"
You were suddenly enveloped into a hug, feeling Law's strong arms wrap around you tightly. Tears welled up in both of your eyes as you embraced, the weight of the past weeks melting away in that moment of pure connection and love.
"I can't believe it," Law whispered, his voice choked with emotion. "You're truly amazing, Y/N."
You hugged him back, feeling the warmth and comfort of his embrace. In that moment, you knew that your journey to recovery had not only strengthened yourself, but also the bond between you and Law.
When the both of you moved back from each other to look into each other's eyes, you saw a deep sense of admiration and pride reflected in Law's gaze.
"Can I kiss you?" Law asked shyly, his voice barely above a whisper. The question hung in the air, filled with anticipation and vulnerability, as you locked eyes with him.
"Oh now you want to ask for permission," you teased, a playful smirk spreading across your face. "After all the times you've stolen kisses from me without asking?"
Law's blush intensified as he sheepishly looked away, a shy smile playing on his lips. "Well, I guess I got carried away," he admitted, his cheeks turning a deeper shade of red.
"Of course, you can kiss me, Law."
Law took a deep breath and leaned in, brushing his lips against yours. His lips were soft and warm, and his hands gently traced your jawline. You melted into his arms, your heart racing with anticipation.
In that moment, time seemed to stand still as Law's kiss filled you with a rush of emotions. The touch of his lips against yours conveyed a depth of love and longing, as if all the unspoken words and unfulfilled desires were finally being expressed.
It was a kiss that spoke volumes, a testament to the connection and intimacy you both shared.
You moved away slightly, needing to catch your breath, but it seemed like Law wasn't going to let you do that. He continued to follow your lips wherever they went, deepening the kiss with every moment, as if trying to convey that he never wanted this moment to end.
You wrapped your arms around his neck, pulling him closer and surrendering yourself to the intoxicating sensation of his kiss.
His hand wrapped across your waist, lowering dangerously by the minute, igniting a fire of desire within you. The intensity of the moment heightened as you felt his touch inching closer to places that made your heart race even faster.
"Law-" You tried to say, your voice filled with desire, but the words were quickly swallowed by another passionate kiss, as Law's lips found yours once again, erasing any doubts or fears that lingered in your mind.
"Please," he begged, his voice filled with an insatiable craving for you, his hands gripping your waist tighter.
You could feel the raw desire in his touch and the urgency in his kiss, igniting a fire of passion that consumed both of you in that moment.
"Okay," you finally managed to say, pulling away slightly to catch your breath. "But let's take this somewhere more private."
Law nodded and said, "Room Shambles," a mischievous glint in his eyes. With a snap of his fingers, the two of you were instantly transported to a different room.
As you looked around the room, you couldn't help but notice the familiar books stacked on the desk. It was Law's bedroom, a place filled with his essence and personal touch.
The realization sent a shiver down your spine, adding an electric excitement to the air as you both embraced the intimacy of being in his private space.
"So why did you pick your room this time?" You teased, a mischievous smile playing on your lips.
"Because last time, we got interrupted in your room," Law replied, his voice laced with a playful tone. "I wanted to make sure we have all the privacy we need this time."
You couldn't help but laugh, feeling a surge of anticipation as you locked eyes with him, knowing that this time, nothing would interrupt your intimate moment together.
"I guess we've learned our lesson," you said, your voice filled with a playful tone. "No more interruptions, just uninterrupted passion."
Law smirked and pulled you closer, his eyes sparkling with desire. "Exactly," he whispered, before capturing your lips once again, sealing the promise of an undisturbed and unforgettable night together.
Law felt his desire for you intensify with each passing second. Sensing his yearning, he gently guides you towards the bed, his hands caressing your soft skin. You break the kiss momentarily, your eyes locked in a heated gaze.
With a tender touch, Law starts to unbutton your blouse, revealing your luscious curves. His fingertips graze your skin, sending shivers down your spine. As the blouse slips off your shoulders, Law's eyes feast upon your supple breasts, barely contained by a delicate lace bra.
Driven by a mixture of nervousness and desire, you allowed Law to explore your body. His touch ignites a fire within you, as his hands slide down your sides, tracing the curves of your waist and hips. You feel a surge of heat between your thighs, aching for his touch.
Law's mouth hungrily finds its way to your neck, planting soft kisses that make you gasp with pleasure. His lips trail down your collarbone, leaving a path of fiery sensations in your wake. The sound of your breathing grows heavier, filling the room with a symphony of desire.
As your bodies intertwine on the bed, Law's hands find their way to the button of your baggy trousers. He skillfully undoes them, sliding them down your legs, along with your lacy panties. Your wetness glistens in the dim light, a sign of your arousal.
"Did you wear these just for me," Law muttered, slowly touching the lacy fabric of your panties.
"Yeah," you whispered, your voice barely audible.
The truth was, you had planned this encounter with Law in your mind for weeks, carefully selecting the lingerie that would drive him wild.
With a mix of anticipation and tenderness, Law positions himself between your legs, his gaze fixed upon your flushed face. Slowly, he slides his throbbing manhood up and down your slick folds, teasing your entrance.
The sensation is maddening, driving you to the brink of ecstasy.
Unable to resist any longer, Law guides himself into your tight, wet slit. A moan escapes your lips as he enters you, inch by inch. The feeling of him inside you is overwhelming, the perfect combination of pleasure and intimacy. Your bodies move as one, a dance of desire and connection.
Law's hips thrust forward, his cock sliding in and out of your velvety warmth with a rhythm that drives you both wild. The room fills with the sound of your moans and the gentle creaking of the bed, a testament to the intensity of your passion.
Your breasts bounce and sway with each powerful thrust, adding to the visual spectacle before them. Your moans grow louder, more insistent, as Law's cock strokes deeper and harder.
"Oh, Law... yes! Deeper! Give it to me like you mean it!" you cries out, your voice filled with a mix of pleasure and urgency.
Law, completely consumed by the moment, pounds your pussy with an intensity that borders on primal. The sensation of your pussy gripping his cock tightly drives him closer to the edge.
"Y/N... you feel so fucking good," he grunts, his voice laced with desire.
Your bodies move in perfect synchrony, lost in a world of pleasure and connection. The room becomes a blur as you both surrender to your primal instincts. The pleasure builds within, driving you both towards the edge of oblivion.
With a final, powerful surge of pleasure, your body convulses around Law's throbbing shaft. You cling to him, your nails digging into his back as you reach your climax. The sensation pushes Law over the edge as well, his hips bucking uncontrollably as he releases his hot load deep inside you dripping wet pussy.
You were exhausted even though Law did all the work. It seemed that your physical and emotional energy had been completely drained, leaving you in a state of blissful exhaustion.
You weakly cupped his face with one hand and smiled, grateful for his efforts and the love he had shown you throughout the day.
"I love you," you whispered, your voice barely audible. Despite your exhaustion, you wanted him to know just how much his support meant to you and how deeply you cherished him.
Law blushed before placing his head perfectly on your shoulder, his warm breath tickling your neck. "I love you too," he murmured softly, his words filling your heart with a renewed sense of love and gratitude.
"But this isn't over," he continued, his hands finding their way back on your waist, "Far from over," he whispered, his voice tinged with a mischievous tone.
"Law-" you said, almost pleadingly.
"Maybe you should have taken more time to rest a little longer," he teased, as he playfully maneuvered you into a different position, ensuring that the night was far from over. . . .

44 and 56?
44. age you get mistaken for
i think that in general people are pretty good at placing my age. but that's a boring answer so um. i went to college when i was 29. first community college, then 2 years at a state school. i had worked in the library at the community college and on the open day for the state school i had multiple people come up to me and be like "oh hey you're that librarian, what are you doing here?" which made me feel deeply old.
56. favourite foods
this one is so hard because there's so many. i absolutely love cured meats of all kinds, particularly slow-cured hams... jamon di iberico bellota is the best thing i've ever eaten. i love sichuanese food: mapo tofu in particular. um, strawberries, apple crumble, dark chocolate peanut butter cups, red beans & rice, spam and pineapple sandwiches, cabbage, halloumi, idk, other stuff.

If I dissapointed you (chapter nine - english)
Chapter 9: Last try
For Buttercup it was a boring day, for her sisters, Blossom and Bubbles, it was the day before a very exciting one. Acorn didn't really understand why all the drama.
Typical, several weeks ago the superheroines had prevented a meteorite from hitting Earth, something very routine that normally happened, only this time someone had mentioned to the Mayor that they should celebrate. They had saved the Earth, again, so the Mayor devised to organize an event, which would be televised worldwide, since, after all, they had saved the entire planet.
Buttercup really liked being recognized and showing off, but the truth is that if they were celebrated every time they do a good deed, it would never end. She at least expected the next day to be fun, but today she seemed boring, unlike her sisters who thought they should prepare.
"We'll only go shopping for a few hours, Buttercup, let's go." Bubble tried to cheer her up, pulling her arm, but without getting the dark-haired woman to move an inch from the sofa in front of the television. We will only buy some nice dresses and some shoes, nothing will happen. - she insisted.
"Does it matter what I'm going to wear tomorrow?" She asked bitterly, ignoring her sister who was doing her best to move her, changing the television channels.
-Bellota, all the eyes of the world will be on us.- Bombón began to say, animated and anxious-. Plus, it's better than being in front of the TV all day.
"Uhh, yes, everyone will see us," the green said with sarcastic emotion, rolling her eyes. Yeah, let's get excited about this, like it doesn't happen once every five months.
-Acorn…- Blossom tried to make her change her mind, but it was impossible.
-I will not move from this chair, and less to go shopping.- she settled in her place.
Well, it doesn't matter, you know? It doesn't matter.- Bubble began to say-. Because Robin is going to join us.
-What a pleasure.- she said without giving importance, leaving him on a television channel-. Yes, my favorite show!
-Let's go.- Bombón gave up, taking her younger sister so that the middle one would be alone.
Buttercup didn't understand how her sisters could buy so many clothes when they already had hundreds that they will never wear in her closet. She was just going to wear anything.
Only a few minutes passed when someone started knocking on the door. The Professor was in the lab, so it was up to Buttercup to open the door to see who was knocking. She got to her feet, lazily, and levitated until she reached the entrance. As a child, she and her sisters flew by all the time, even inside the house, now she could tell that they walked more than they flew; although the habit of flying, when it is not necessary, instead of using her feet had not yet completely disappeared.
She flung open the door, wanting to see who was disturbing her peace. Oh, it was just Mitch. Acorn gave her a strange face, asking what she was doing there, although she didn't really care, sometimes she just showed up unannounced. The brunette was a headache sometimes, he really could be very troublesome, and for some reason he was her best friend.
"Is it a good time?" She asked when she saw the sulky face in which Buttercup saw him.
"My sisters went shopping with Robin," she answered. And I am very bored.
And why didn't you go with them?
-The joke is to have fun, not to spend the afternoon choosing shoes.- Her concept of fun was definitely very different from that of her sisters-. And what about you?
-It is not obvious? I was also bored.
Acorn smiled at him and let him pass. They went back to watching television, at least to entertain themselves for a while.
"I get bored more easily when I don't have anyone to hit," Buttercup commented.
-The city has been quiet lately.
-It is not like before. Maybe for Blossom and Bubbles it's fine, but sometimes I miss when villains showed up on a daily basis.
-Times change, I guess. Hey, but there are still many criminals on the street, there's Mojo Jojo, Fuzzy… and Mojo Jojo.- There really weren't many to mention-. There's the Rowdyruff Boys, I know you really like to beat 'em up.
-Yes, they are failures.- the girl mocked-. But I haven't seen them since Princess's birthday and that's something that really bothers me. It's strange, but I have a feeling that something is not quite right.
"Surely it's your imagination," she assured, returning her sight to the television. And there are still plenty for you to hit, there are the bank robbers.
"Oh those are easy, I can't hit them that much because they die, it's frustrating." She crossed her arms.
-There's also the mafia.- she mentioned, fixing her eyes on Acorn, seeing how she reacted-. They seem to be difficult to control…
Acorn was annoyed and was about to complain about him having mentioned it, but they knocked on the door again. Buttercup was at the door in a second, still mad at Mitch, she opened it.the door only to find a baby in the doorway.
"Jimmy?" She was confused when she saw him, she held him in her arms, she looked if there was someone nearby but the baby was completely alone. It can't be!-She became furious again.
She went back into the living room, walked over to Mitch and handed the baby to him to hold.
"Are you going to take care of him again?" asked the boy, holding the child with some mistrust, he didn't like that baby.
"Apparently," he said reluctantly.
She went to the phone, dialed a number very quickly and waited, but when no one answered, she decided to leave a message.
"Listen to me well!" the girl yelled into the phone. I've already told you that you can't just come and leave your son here at my door! Could you at least let me know! You better call me when you're done with whatever you're doing!” He hung up the phone with such force that she nearly broke it.
Mitch was still holding the baby, but Jimmy hated Mitch so much that, without thinking, he started biting the boy's hands to get him to let go.
-Ah! Acorn, get this damn child off me!-He shouted, almost pleading. Baby bites hurt horrible.
-Don't be a crybaby.- she told him, taking Jimmy and leaving him on the ground.
-Hears…
"Don't tell me anything!" She yelled, still furious.
-Why do you have to take care of it? It's not your responsibility.- she told him sincerely, hoping not to receive an insult from the girl or something worse.
-Don't start telling me that too! I've had enough scolding from Blossom! But I don't mind, it really doesn't bother me.
-Then why are you so angry?
"What do you care!" It was really difficult to talk to her. Jimmy doesn't spend time with his father, that's what bothers me, he's just with me most of the time.
"You're not her mother, you shouldn't," she told him, though she knew she couldn't convince her. I don't understand them, taking care of a criminal's son? Jimmy is the son of the mob boss, he is the son of Ace. Why do they do it? Ace is a villain and interestingly when he ends up in jail, he mysteriously escapes. They know that they can get in trouble if they find out that you are the ones to release him.
-You said it, Mitch, you don't understand.- the girl said, watching Jimmy play, with a little sadness-. It's all for Jimmy's sake, I'm doing everything for him.
"Are you sure that's it?" She asked suspiciously, receiving an annoyed look from Buttercup. I understand that you love him so much, Jimmy, but why did you decide to take care of him? Doesn't he have a real mother?
-No, he doesn't have it.- she said with a certain defensive tone-. Ace never wanted to tell me who his mother was.
"But you have to know something, right?" Mitch asked curiously, waiting for his friend to finally tell him what the story was.
Buttercup looked back from her to the boy, who was playing with a ball. She was trying to see something in him that she couldn't identify.
-Jimmy spent his first months of life in an orphanage.- she confessed, clenching her fists, containing an anger that began to arise.
"What are you saying?" That took him by surprise, she hadn't imagined it.
-Ace knew he had a son, but he didn't know where he was. Jimmy's mom didn't want him, and she was cruel enough not to let Ace have him either. She sure was a twisted woman.
-And what happened?
-Ace tried to contact her, but she just vanished. Ace didn't care about that woman, he just wanted to have her child. Believe it or not, he moved heaven, sea and earth just to find it, but he was nowhere to be found. Desperate, he came to us, he really begged for our help, we couldn't refuse that.
-Then…
-Bombón investigated which children had been abandoned during the days in which we imagined that Jimmy had been born. We searched for him for a long time until Bubbles and I found him in an orphanage, one very far from this city.
"How did you recognize him?" He asked curiously.
"Not us, Ace saw it and said that she was an exact copy of his mother, although I still can't find a resemblance to someone." He continued looking at Jimmy, without imagining who the mother of that child could be.
"So you don't know exactly what day Jimmy's birthday is?"
-When we found him he must have been about seven months old, but we don't know what day he was born, although we don't care too much.- he smiled remembering the difficulties they had when choosing a day to celebrate Jimmy's first birthday-. I don't know why, Mitch, but I can't help but love him. Ever since I saw the baby for the first time, I…
"You're like his mother now, aren't you?" He commented, smiling tenderly at her.
"Don't say that," she complained, embarrassed.
.
In the Saltadilla park, Brick was alone, sitting on a bench. There was only one day left, one day to carry out his plan to embarrass Blossom, although Brick honestly didn't think specifically about that. Brick's mind went far beyond a simple plan for revenge.
He hadn't seen Princess since last time, but he couldn't help but think about whatand it had happened. He had felt sorry for her! I had never felt true pity before. She couldn't get it out of her head that, at the moment of seeing her so sad, part of him wanted to stop her from crying. He just he didn't make any sense.
It turned out that, deep down, he very minimally understood her. They both hated the whole world and its inhabitants, but no matter what they did, the loneliness still hurt. They couldn't change who they really were, and people weren't going to accept them for it, or forget what they did in the past. It was difficult to try to change something, to be different from what they had already established, when people saw them waiting for them to fail.
Brick couldn't go on living having such empty goals. Destroying the Powerpuffs was the reason he was created, and he wanted to do it, but he didn't make sense, since assuming he ever did, his life would no longer have meaning. He couldn't have an existence reduced to just that. He needed something more than what people expected of himself.
A little girl approached him at that moment, curious, Brick barely glanced at her and a woman came to immediately brush her aside. Did he really think she was going to hurt him? He wasn't going to do it, he really wasn't going to do it, and he didn't know why. Before he wouldn't have a problem hurting anyone who only got in the way, now he didn't want to do it. Was he softening? The answer was clear.
He looked around at his, everyone keeping their proper distance from him, avoiding getting any closer than necessary. Everyone was waiting for him to be the same as always, everyone was watching him, waiting for that cruel person to do something wrong, to attack them. They could not imagine that a cruel person could feel anything other than cruelty.
Being sorry had been the key to unlocking that locked door in his mind, where Brick could finally think about what he really, honestly felt. And he couldn't stop Blossom from being in his head either.
What was so special about that redhead? How could he flout people's expectations and be what she chose to be? He overcame what people expected of her, he ignored what they had established as "perfection". But she still hid her true self, pretended to be what people and her family wanted for her. Why was it necessary? Why was she afraid she would let them down? Why didn't Bombón want to lose people's love?
What did it really mean? what did that mean to her? why were those three girls loved by everyone? Did that love give them strength? Or did they just want to be the center of attention? Why was love necessary?
Brick looked around her again, noticing the people, who were living together, but moving away from him. For Brick, love meant absolutely nothing, but a few days ago neither did pity. He now knew that Princess caused him compassion, for some reason.
For Princess, love doesn't make sense either, just like Brick, she didn't care about anyone, but still she felt empty inside, as if something was missing. Watching her cry, Brick could only see himself, seeing how fragile she really was. But the difference was that Brick would never allow himself to cry, which made it hurt much, much more.
.
At the mall, Blossom, Bubbles, and their neighbor Robin were walking around the shops, passing by a clothing store and seeing what was on the movie billboard; They decided to see a movie next week. They stopped to buy some ice cream and sat around a table. They had fun together, but Bubbles was sorry that Buttercup didn't want to come along.
-You know what Buttercup is like, Bubbles.- Bombón explained to his little sister.
"It's just that we haven't done fun things together for a long time," the blonde was depressed.
"She was never really into this kind of thing, but I'm sure she'll join us to go to the movies," Robin commented, after she licked the popsicle she had bought.
-B… But she will want to see a horror movie… and they scare me!
-Oh, Bubbles.- Bombón laughed.
They hadn't the slightest inkling that outside the mall the Rowdyruff Boys were up to mischief, or at least two of them. Although they also did not know that two of the Powerpuffs were nearby.
Butch was entertaining himself, every time a person passed by he would throw a small rock at them, with such speed and force that it made people trip and hit each other. Boomer was just watching it all, seeing how his brother was laughing non-stop at his witty prank. Boomer didn't feel like playing along with his brother, lately he couldn't sleep well at night, so he decided to just watch.
Boomer also stayed a little away from his dark-haired brother, since, with Brick not being near him, no one would stop Butch from hitting his little blond brother too much if he bothered him in some way or another. .They didn't understand why Brick didn't spend much time with them lately, even though they didn't even look for him. Brick just went out and wasted the whole afternoon. Boomer had been a little worried, but he didn't say anything, he didn't want to ask and get in trouble with his brothers. And Butch didn't seem to care too much. There was also the fact that whenever they saw Brick, he seemed distant, lost in his mind, as if he was oblivious to what was going on around him.
Boomer felt pretty bad about this. Although he didn't get along with Brick as well, he got along with him much better than with Butch; with Butch he just couldn't talk to him without him getting angry and hitting him, with Brick it was the same but not as much. Without Brick nearby it was no longer the same.
Meanwhile, inside the place, the girls had finished their shopping and were ready to go home. Bubbles had bought several pairs of shoes, about three dresses, lots of sparkly accessories, and a very cute teddy bear; she was carrying it all by herself. Blossom had only bought what he planned to use the next day and a couple of books; She looked at her excited sister, she didn't like that she spent so much money on things she didn't need, but on the other hand, the blonde looked happy, that was worth it. And Robin, Robin had only bought her popsicle, she had the money that her parents had given her, but she didn't really want to buy anything.
-Come on, Robin, the dress we saw was perfect for you.- Bubble said, with a dreamy face.
"Perhaps on another occasion," the brunette apologized.
"You are our friend!" She began to say the blonde. Tomorrow I want you to stand next to us.
-With you? When all the cameras are on them? I don't think so, I prefer to see them from below, where she doesn't distinguish me from the others.- she said, nervous when imagining it.
-Robin, it's not a big deal.- Bombón encouraged her.
-You say that because you're used to it, you're a hero, and I have nothing to do there.
"Come on, Robin, it would cheer me up a lot if you were with us." Bubble begged excitedly. What Bombón says is true, it's not a big deal. It will just be an event that will be broadcast everywhere, everyone will see us, it's not like something embarrassing happens that everyone will see, thus ruining your life.
"Bubble!" Blossom scolded, seeing Robin's frightened face.
"Ha ha, no thanks," she replied nervously, staring at her friends as they headed for the exit. What if I feel like scratching my nose in front of everyone? everyone would turn to see me! And what if I sneeze? What a shame!
"You know you're exaggerating, right?" Blossom said, raising her eyebrow.
Well, yes, but imagine it. What if I trip? What would happen if I fell in front of everyone? you guys fly and don't fall down, but I wouldn't put up with being teased at school for a little accident like falling down. And what if I hit something? I'm not attentive enough to… Ouch! - Suddenly, Robin had fallen to the ground.
It turns out that the brown-haired girl, when talking to her Superpowered friends, had not been attentive enough to the road, thus colliding with someone, tripping and falling to the ground. That had been a terrible blow, like hitting a wall or something. The first thing she did was rub her head and then look at who or what she had crashed into. She widened her eyes, terrified by her bad luck.
"Watch where you're walking, silly girl!" Butch roared, furious.
Robin just screamed and ran to hide behind the redhead. She really had been scared to death.
"What are you doing here?!" Bubble asked, annoyed at the thought of ruining her day.
-We were just having fun, Super Silly! Don't come bothering us! - Butch yelled.
"You better get out of here if you don't want to get hurt!" Bombón threatened, prepared for a possible fight.
Blossom hesitated a bit, since they were missing Buttercup, but looking at them better, she realized that they were missing Brick.
Butch wanted to beat her up and shut her up, but he knew her plan would be soon, so she held back.
"Boomer, let's go, we'll take care of them later!" He ordered the blonde.
Boomer hadn't done anything, he just watched. Before leaving, the blond looked at Bubbles for a moment, she immediately noticed and looked back at him. Boomer looked away and flew away with his brother.
"That was weird," Blossom muttered.
"Robin, are you okay?" The blonde asked her friend, concerned.
"I… I… I won't be distracted by walking again, I really won't do it again." She was really pale from the shock she got.
-Robin, they weren't going to do anything to you, not with us taking care of you.- Bombón said, putting her hand on the brunette's shoulder.
"It's just… they scare me a lot," he said, feeling a chill.
-They're just kids doing mischief, we always stop them.- Bombón said.
-With a mischief they have done terrible things, I don't want to know what would happen if they do somethingreally. They are monsters.
-They are just like that, they can't change what they are.- Bubble murmured, the other two turned to see her-. Uh… did I say it out loud?
-Anyway, let's go now.- Blossom finished the matter, looking at Bubbles strangely.
-Um, can you take me? I don't want to keep walking, at least not today.- Robin said, smiling sadly.
The sisters laughed, Blossom gave Bubbles her things and carried Robin to fly back home.
.
The next day, at the Morbucks family mansion, Princess walked to a large room that looked like a movie theater, with a huge screen, she sat in her comfortable seat, turned on the television and ate popcorn. It was all she had planned to do that day.
"Miss, won't you go out today?" asked a plump blonde servant woman.
"No, why do you ask, nana?" the girl answered in an aggressive tone.
"No, not at all," the woman replied immediately. If you need anything, call me.- she said and then left.
It was obvious why that woman was asking, that day the Powerpuff Girls were going to have a big event dedicated to them, it was strange that the Princess didn't think of intervening and ruining their party.
But Princess was not going to move from her place. From the beginning she had made it clear that she didn't want to be part of that plan to humiliate the Powerpuffs, she had only helped the Rowdyruff Boys with all that. She had told them what to do and how, but other than that, she wanted no part of this madness. Princess had said that her birthday party had been her last attempt to ruin the Powerpuffs, so she didn't really care too much what happened now.
Princess, I honestly didn't think they could pull it off. Brick seemed sure he could do it, but Princess knew it was just false hope. But she wanted to watch everything that was going on, so she turned on the television, she wanted to see what was going on, how they would mess it up. Although deep down she had a vague hope that they would succeed, but the possibility was very remote.
.
In front of City Hall, hundreds of people had gathered just to watch the Mayor thank the Powerpuff Girls for saving the world. He was giving a long and tedious speech, probably written by his assistant, after the speech was over, he would surely give the girls some recognition or something, people suspected that maybe he had made another statue in their honor. of the.
The people did not care so much what the Mayor said, they were there to see the girls, everyone was very excited and most of the citizens of the city had actually attended. There was a lot of movement in front of the city hall, people shouting and clapping, children with balloons in the iconic colors of the heroines, banners thanking them. They really had the unconditional love of all those people.
While the Mayor gave his speech that seemed to have no end, the three girls were right next to him, waiting for the Mayor to hand over the microphone to Bombón, because everyone wanted to hear her.
Bubbles had a wide smile, Buttercup looked like she was going to fall asleep at any moment, Blossom remained serene. The leader, although she seemed calm, could not deny the fact that an event like that could be the victim of the evil plan of one of her enemies, and they had many; she remained alert to anything that might happen.
They knew that this long speech was recorded live and broadcast to almost all televisions in almost the entire world, to think that someone did not want to take advantage of that was ridiculous.
Among all those people, far away from the cameras, of course, Robin was watching her friends, being her up to the front of all that crowd, a few steps away was Mitch. She didn't talk much to Mitch, one could almost say that they weren't even friends, they just went to the same high school and shared a friend who was Bellota. Although they sometimes played together as children, Mitch did not get along very well with Bubbles and Blossom, who said that he was a very bad influence on Buttercup. But Acorn had always been one of those who looked for bad company, so nothing could be done.
Blossom looked at Robin and remembered what had happened the day before in front of the mall. They had met Boomer and Butch, but they were mostly peaceful, leaving when asked and not causing much of a ruckus. That was something really suspicious. He thought that perhaps they had only been intimidated, since they lacked their leader, but that would not make sense, because they lacked the strongest, Acorn; It should also be noted that the one who had been upset was Butch, the most aggressive, not to say wild, of the three, but he only agreed to leave. Now that Blossom figured it out in her head, maybe that wasn't a good sign.
Wary that her suspicions might be true, Bombón looked around, searching for a sign of a possible attack. The bad feeling was beginning to bother her, she couldn't be calm without first making sure that everything around her was in order. But she didn't want to ruin her sisters' day with her unlikely suspicions.
-Girls.- she called to her sisters, in a low voice-. I need to go to the bathroom, I'll be right back.
-Really? Now? - Buttercup annoyed. Didn't you go before you came?
-Hurry up, we've got you covered.- Bubble said with her innocent little voice.
The truth is that there was no way to cover that a Powerpuff had left the place, everyone noticed how the redhead slipped away without saying anything, everyone except the Mayor who kept talking into the microphone, babbling things that the others already They didn't even listen. There were only two Powerpuffs in front of the cameras, and even if it was anything, half the world, literally, wondered where the pink girl had gone.
Bombón had the need to see that everything was fine, it was better to be safe than sorry, so, without being seen, she surrounded the entire event, looking for anything suspicious, finding nothing, she moved a little further, just in case. The truth is that the Rowdyruff Boys did plan something terrible against her specifically.
Butch and Boomer were watching, from a distance, everything that was happening in front of City Hall; Brick was the one who would be in charge of interrupting the signal to transmit that video that would humiliate Bombón in the worst way. The two younger brothers did not ignore that the leader had left the place, they were there to make sure that nothing interferes with the plan, they had to keep an eye on the Super Powerful. They couldn't let them find out what they were doing, and seeing that Blossom was looking for signs of something against them, it was certain that he, because of his intelligence, would soon find Brick.
"What do we do if he discovers us?" Boomer said nervously. They were both watching the event from the top of a building, hidden from public view and the distracted sisters.
"You have to distract her," he said aggressively. You stay here, I'll take care of it.
"Don't spoil it," the blonde said, worried about his brother's lack of discretion, but he regretted saying it when Butch roared at him.
Butch dashed off to find Blossom and distract her long enough, after all it wouldn't take long for Brick to interrupt the television signal.
Bombón, cunning as she is, decided to even go check the television studios, just in case, since the concern that something was wrong did not go away. Butch found her then and, noticing where she was headed, he appeared in front of her to stop her.
"Butch?" She looked at him, perplexed, because although she suspected that they were up to something, she didn't think that one would suddenly appear to her.
Butch couldn't let her suspect anything, so he made something up.
"Enjoying your party?" He said with some aggressiveness.
-Where are your brothers?-She asked, a little worried not having them in sight.
"I don't know, maybe ruining her ridiculous party while you're here." She smiled mischievously, wanting the girl to believe that was her plan.
Blossom glanced back, hoping his powerful eyesight would show her some irregularity in the center of Hopscotch, but there was nothing unusual.
"What are you planning?" She asked, aggressive as well.
"Isn't it obvious?" She had to think carefully about what to say to him, he needed to hold her as long as possible. All those people are retards, just like you, nothing could stop us if we wanted to destroy them right now.
-They can't do it! we are here to stop anything you do!
"Yes, but while they stop us, who ensures that no one will be hurt?" He was playing with her, not even he was sure what he was saying.
Blossom turned back to the event, she still didn't notice anything unusual. He forced his sharp vision on him, using his x-ray vision as well, and though he was far, far away, he managed to make out Boomer, but he didn't find Brick. Then she thought better of it, why was Butch telling her all that? especially when Butch wasn't the one with the words, he was the one with the punches, why was he talking to her in that almost calm way? unless…
"Are you distracting me?" She asked herself more before she was sure she was right. You distract me! what are they hiding?!
Damn, that girl was too smart, surely it was a matter of time before she, with her ability to deduce, she found out part of what was really happening. Butch, with the temper that he has, could only despair.
He was going to keep her there, no matter her method. So without further ado, Butch started attacking her.
.
Brick had gone to the place where they sent the television broadcasts. She princess had told him exactly what to do, she had handed him a USB stick containing the video thatit framed Blossom and showed that she was a random girl who messed with any man, once everyone knew this, the Powerpuffs would be ruined.
All Brick had to do was put the stick into the computer, flip a few buttons, and he was done. He arrived at the place, a dark place with many screens, on which images of the event were seen, in a chair a subject controlled everything while he drank a soft drink. Brick approached without making a sound.
-Your turn is over.- he said with a cold voice, hitting the subject and leaving him unconscious.
That memory, according to Princess, was special; not only would it affect the channels that were broadcasting the event, according to her, but once the video signal reaches the satellite, it will act like a virus that will be broadcast on all televisions, whether they are watching the event or something else. If it is a television that receives a signal, the video will be seen, yes or yes. Even on the big screen that the Mayor had ordered to be placed in front of the town hall so that everyone could see what was happening ahead.
Boomer had asked if it wasn't better to put the video on the internet, to which Princesa replied that once it's broadcast on TV, someone will record it and the next second it will be on the internet.
Once he inserted the memory, the video began to play. Brick couldn't help but think as he looked at the "Send" option, once he did, it would be done, Blossom's big secret would be revealed. She really was going to do it, it's not like he would have a problem exposing someone who only did what she wanted for herself and not for others, did he?
.
Blossom knew that Butch was distracting her from something. There was nothing unusual in front of the town hall, other than that Boomer was there, but he didn't seem like he was going to do anything. So, with just facts, assumptions, and her brain's easy ability to parse every detail, she realized that Butch wanted to keep her from finding Brick, for some reason she couldn't figure out yet, but would soon, for a reason. the genius of the group.
Butch had attacked her with a punch, it had been so sudden that she didn't have time to dodge it. But that guy hit terribly hard! how could Acorn stand to fight him?! Blossom was clearly not used to fighting against the green of that group, it was rare that she had to fight against one that was not her counterpart.
She tried to recover from the blow as fast as she could, she searched for him with her eyes and upon locating him she shot lasers from her eyes. He dodged it very well, unfortunately for the redhead. She went to him at high speed, to try to catch him and hit him, but he slipped away and when she least expected it, another blow came from behind.
She thought about ignoring him and going after Brick to find out what they were up to, but she couldn't just run away, she knew Butch wouldn't let her go that easily.
With the previous blow, Bombón had crashed hard against the street, when she looked up she could only find the worst; Butch had thrown a car at her from heights, it fell on top of her and buried her further in the ground, she could only scream a little as she was shocked. That's why she hated fighting Butch, he seemed to play around all the time, she looked like she loved hurting the opponent and humiliating him in the process.
Blossom, furious, smashed the wreckage of the car that she had on top of her, concentrated her powers in her hands and began to throw energy balls in the direction of Butch, who kept flying. She didn't stop shooting at him until she finally hit him and knocked him off balance for an instant. She took advantage of the attacker's distraction and went at him to give him a hard headbutt that sent Butch crashing into a building.
"What are you and your brothers planning to do?!" Tell me! - The girl demanded to know.
Butch, without answering, went to her and kneed her, hitting her in the chin, then kicked her, sending her back to the ground.
"When everyone finds out, you'll be finished, bitch!" he yelled, without thinking too much about it.
Blossom completely ignored the insult and tried to figure out the rest. She put the pieces together "When everyone finds out" he had said. Of course, they were really going to disrupt the television feed, now that everyone was watching them. Bombón thought that maybe it was just some of his jokes, she didn't know what could really happen, but still he wasn't going to allow it.
-Bubble! Acorn!-She called her sisters, knowing that they would listen.
Back at the event, the Mayor still hadn't finished his speech, in fact, he had changed the subject. Buttercup was so distracted that she didn't hear anything. Bubble seemed to wake up from her slight boredom as she managed to hear her sister's voice with her sensitive ears.
"Acorn, Acorn," she whispered to her-her sister. I thought I heard Bombón calling us.
-You're crazy, Bubble.- was all she answered.
the next seconde the explosion of a building was heard, caused by the fight between Bombón and Butch. This time Acorn did hear that, although strangely the citizens did not. Acorn made a face of disgust.
"Okay, we have to get out of here.
The two walked away "sneaky" but everyone, except the Mayor, noticed that they left, and the whole public was upset.
In the distance, Boomer could see how the two remaining sisters were also leaving like the previous one, so he had no choice but to go to them and block their way. They were already far from the city hall, but not so close to where the brother and sister were fighting respectively.
"I'm not going to let them pass," he said, determined, but a little fearful deep down.
-Bubble, you take care of it.- Bellota said and then flew off to look for his older sister.
Now Bubbles would fight Boomer, but the girl had an almost peaceful smile, not taking the situation so seriously, too confident. Boomer, on the other hand, didn't like the whole thing that much.
"I'm really sorry about this," the blonde said simply, going to kick the other boy so hard she smashed him into a bus. Oops, I think I went a bit too far.- but he didn't regret anything.
Blossom was still fighting Butch. Butch was very strong, but Blossom was much smarter, so they were almost even.
Butch grabbed Blossom's hair and pulled it all the way through while he laughed.
-LOL! No one is going to save you now, slut!
"Nobody messes up my sister's hair!" Buttercup yelled, bumping into Butch to lunge at him. I only do that! Do you understand, asshole?!
Acorn began to give Butch hundreds of punches as he tried to throw her off. Blossom just saw them and wished she didn't have to fight the black-haired man again, only Buttercup could control him like that.
The redhead quickly went out to look for Brick, she knew where to find him, if she was going to interrupt the tv signal, it was obvious where he would be.
Brick was a second away from transmitting that video when Blossom arrived, flinging open the doors.
"Brick, stop whatever you are…!" She was suddenly speechless as she managed to see the video on one of the screens.
Brick was shocked to see her arrive like that, moreover, he was literally one click away from completing her plans, but she was a couple of steps away from ruining them. More Blossom didn't seem to come out of her sudden shock.
Ever since Princess had told the truth about Blossom, until she proved it for herself, even until now, Brick still had her doubts deep down. He wondered if that smiling and happy girl was really that harlot who appeared in the videos. It really is that he did not seem to agree, it was impossible to relate. But now she saw her in front of him, she saw that face of complete terror, and he knew, Blossom had really done all those things, she had really hidden all of that.
-How…? where did you get that video? - she asked, with an expression full of panic.
"Don't make that face of terror, don't be cynical," she spoke, without compassion. We saw you take several men to bed, this video is the proof and everyone will know it.
"You wouldn't dare!" he roared, too fierce a voice coming from her. I swear you will regret this!
"No matter what you want to do to me next, you are the one who will suffer the most," she mocked, bringing her hand closer to the button that would ruin the girl's life.
"Yes you do, I swear…I…!" She really wanted to threaten him, but she was too shocked, desperate, angry. I'll kill you if you do! Did you hear me?! I will do it!
"Kill me?" he snorted. After this, you'll be the one who wants to die.
He only made fun of her, he loved seeing her suffer from her, he was enjoying her at that moment. He made up his mind to end it once and for all.
"Wait!" she yelled. Brick turned to look at her, smiling mischievously at her. I'll do whatever you want…just don't…please.
-What you want? like what?
Blossom was trembling, clenching her teeth and fists, beginning to cry in despair. She looked at Brick resignedly, feeling a little scared.
-You really are a whore right?
"Damn you, Brick!" She yelled with too much hate. You are fucking trash! you are a coward, people like you should die!
-You are the prostitute! you deserve what is happening to you! Say goodbye to your perfect image!
Blossom was too scared, she was crying uncontrollably now. She only she could see how her life was about to be destroyed, she had never felt a fear like that. And she really deserved it, that was what hurt the most.
"Don't do it… I beg you," she struggled to say, as her tears wouldn't stop. The girl knelt on the ground, trembling helplessly.
"What are you…?" Brick was shocked, she was… kneeling on the floor.
"I beg you, for God's sake, don't do this to me," she begged, covering her eyes in a futile attempt to dry them. What will he saymy father? what will my sisters say?
-You asked for it, stupid! this is all your fault! You are evil now, so accept the consequences!
"I'm NOT evil!" She clarified angrily, digging her nails into the floor.
"You're not just a fucking whore, you're also a liar!" And you were supposed to be the one who never lied. You filthy bitch, you lied to your family, you lied to everyone! You are abominable!
"Shut up!" she yelled, her voice choked with tears. Don't talk like you understand me! You don't understand anything about me!
-I only know what this video proves, Bombón, you are a bitch.- she said with contempt.
"And what of that?!" She yelled, ceasing to tremble, now crying with rage. If I'm just anyone, what does it matter to you?! Why should anyone else care?! I never hurt anyone, the guys I messed with knew it was just for one night, I never really hurt anyone!
"That doesn't fix anything, silly!" She spat out the words, feeling genuinely disgusted. A woman should never do that!
"And what does that matter to me?!" She shouted again, daring to raise her eyes and see him with hatred. I know what I should and shouldn't do! And I always do things correctly! I'm always the smart one, the nice one, the polite one, the perfect little girl! I'm tired of all that, Brick!
"What could you be tired of?!" She scowled at her, really hating her. Your life is perfect! Everybody loves you! What more can you ask?! What the hell could you possibly want to risk everything you've got?!
"I don't know, damn it, I don't know!" She brought her trembling hands to her head, trying to clear her thoughts, feeling grim. I don't know what the fuck she was thinking! I was fed up, disgusted that everyone idolized me! I was so afraid of making a mistake, everyone always expects me to be the perfect one! Buttercup and Bubbles make their mistakes, but I don't, ever! I was afraid of making a mistake just once! I couldn't take the pressure anymore, of living in fear of what others would think of me! And look at me now, I've ruined everything, I'm still so scared!
"That was not the solution," she commented, this time with more subtlety.
"I know!" She looked down at her again, as far as she could go, hugging her chest, looking like a desolate little girl. I just wanted to escape my fear.
Brick knew this couldn't go on, he couldn't go on listening to her, he couldn't. She was so helpless, so hurt, too disturbed to take advantage of that now, that Bombón over there wasn't the brave one, nor the smart one, not even the whore she thought she was, that one over there was just a broken girl.
"Brick, please," she kept pleading, still on her knees, crawling toward him. You don't understand me, you don't know what it feels like for people to see you, to expect something from you, but no matter how hard you try… you don't want to.
Really, having her kneel at her feet was wow, but she didn't feel good at all.
Brick wanted to die at that moment, he couldn't bear to see her anymore, that girl was sad, she was anguish. He didn't even want to listen to her anymore. He hated her too much, he weaned her a lot. He wanted to punch her in the face over and over again, make her suffer even more until he bled, then pick her up and tell her that he did understand her, which is what he's always been feeling but he'd never admitted it.
"Get out of here!" he yelled, kicking her off her feet, where she was kneeling like a slave. Don't act like a complete loser!” When he didn't get up, he kicked her again. Stand up, stupid!
Bombón was confused, she looked at him with fear, but perplexed, she didn't know how to react, she just stayed there lying where she was.
-You're one…one! Agghh! -I was pissed off, he really was and a lot.
He literally screwed everything up, took the memory out of the computer, shattered all the screens, getting rid of the frustration in the process and leaving those watching the event without a signal.
"You know what, Bombón?! Fuck you, damn it! -He insulted her, but she wasn't offended, she didn't even listen to him, she was very shocked by what had happened.
Brick flew away from there, he reached his brothers who were still fighting with the Powerpuffs.
"The plan failed!" he told them. Let's destroy everything here!
"What?" asked the two brothers, not understanding what the hell was going on.
Brick went to City Hall, where the Mayor finally realized that the three heroines had left. Brick just started shooting at everything, wanting to smash as much as he could, completely driven insane by his anger and his pride. He really had ruined everything himself.
.
No one got hurt, at least from Brick's fit of rage, the Powerpuffs took it upon themselves to save everyone, but everyone wondered where Blossom was. To Brick, she could be hiding under a rock, she didn't care. The fact is that later they had fled and the Superpowers did not find them.
Now Brick was in the parkSaltadilla, in the part where there was a small lake. He was really shattered internally, he was clenching the flash drive in his fist, but not breaking it, not really knowing what to do with it.
He had been weak, he had had the best opportunity of her life but he had squandered it. He had had her right in front of him but she couldn't do it, she couldn't. He just didn't want to do it, no matter how much he ordered it to his mind, no matter how ridiculous it sounded, his heart didn't want to do it. The feelings sucked, and all he could feel at the moment was pain, but he wasn't sure why.
Yes he resented losing again, he resented the fact that now his brothers wouldn't stop bothering him for failing, but his pain didn't come from any of that. He couldn't get the image of Blossom out of his head, kneeling there on the floor, begging for mercy, crying like he had never seen her, ashamed, humiliated, begging at her feet so that she wouldn't reveal what she really was.
She didn't want the others to find out what it really is, but Brick already knew; she wasn't just a whore, a slut, an offerer, someone, no! that was just something accidental that happened to him being what he really is deep down. She was a very fragile person, someone who suffered from feeling trapped by the expectations of so many people who claim to love her. She was tired of being the most perfect little girl of the perfect little girls, it was a feeling that ended up exploding in a negative way.
He always wanted to have the leader of the Powerpuffs humiliate herself before him in that way, she always thought it was what she wanted the most, but she couldn't help but feel so bad. He didn't want that anymore, not like that anymore. Now what he wanted was to stop feeling sorry for people, he wanted to go back in time and return to how it was before, like when he was a child, when he didn't really care about anything.
Why did he feel the same as her? Why did he feel trapped in her cruel and lifeless? Why did it hurt so much to be who he is? He never asked to be reduced to a simple monster that causes destruction, he never asked that people only see him that way, that they see him as a damn doomed to fail. Both he and Blossom hadn't chosen what they were created for, he might like to do what they do, but why didn't they allow them to be something more than the purpose they chose for them?
Brick was indeed a monster that caused destruction, and he liked being one, but it wasn't just that, he also felt, and he felt very lonely, loneliness can only cause more pain.
Butch and Boomer finally approached his brother, since he hadn't said anything since it was all over.
"Can you tell us what went wrong?" Butch asked aggressively, really furious.
-Bombón stopped me, that's all.- he answered without further ado, with a cold voice.
-How could he have stopped you?! Explain us!-He demanded.
-He just stopped me, that's all you need to know! Now shut your mouth and get out of here, I don't want anyone to bother me! -Well, he didn't want his brothers to see him in such a weak state, he didn't know how long he was going to endure.
"What do you have there, Brick?" Boomer asked when he saw what his brother was clenching in her fist. It's the memory! you still have it? I assumed Blossom broke it for you or something.
"Luckily we still have them," Butch said. We can try again, but this time we won't lose.
Brick clenched his fists tighter, but still didn't break the memory. Was he serious? did they really want to try again one more time? even when they knew they had no chance? Nope! Brick couldn't take it anymore! He couldn't take it anymore! He wasn't going to go through with it! He couldn't do it!
"This is what I think of this damn plan!" He yelled angrily, throwing the USB stick into the lake water, losing it forever. Screw that idea, screw that video, and screw Bombón! and you know what? I better rot too!
His brothers looked at him as if he was crazy, because he had indeed lost part of his sanity. Brick couldn't imagine hurting Blossom for something that hurt him so much too, it was too hypocritical and pointless. Brick never intended to do it again.
"What the hell is wrong with you?!" Butch yelled, pulling Brick by the shirt, but Brick barely responded. You've gone mad?! Why don't you want to destroy them?!
"What do you care what I want or not?!" Leave me!-He pushed him to get rid of him.
Butch was very angry with him, he went over and punched him in the face, he didn't use all his strength, but it did hurt Brick, a lot.
"Go away" was all the redhead said, with a voice that seemed to release poison.
Butch had expected another reaction, that he would hit back or insult him, but he hadn't done any of that, and somehow this made him even angrier.
"Let's get out of here, Boomer, let's leave this wretch!" He ordered angrily. We do not need it!
Boomer was speechless, he looked at his older brother, sadly,I didn't want to leave him, I didn't know what to do.
"Boomer!" Butch called again, having already flown away.
Boomer had no choice but to leave, clinging to the hope that his brother would feel better later, since it was enough to see her face to notice that Brick was dying inside.
Brick was left alone in the park, trying to get those feelings out of his head, trying to remind himself that a villain couldn't feel compassion, but also wondering why the hell he had let the only people he cared about go.
Some time passed, it was already getting dark, Brick hadn't moved from the place where he was. He sat in front of the lake, trying to distract his mind from it by watching the ducks swimming on the shore, but they were already going to sleep. He felt someone approaching.
"What do you want?!" He asked, furious that they bothered him, although he didn't know who it was that had arrived.
-I knew they would fail again, believe me, it was quite a show.- spoke that irritating voice.
"Go away, Morbucks!" He shouted with annoyance, without turning to see her.
Princess kept a slight cynical smile, she took a few steps closer to him, but not too much.
"If it makes you feel better, I still have the original photos on this camera here." From the jacket she was wearing, she pulled out and showed the camera, but Brick seemed to refuse to look at her. Don't you want to try again?
"Stop teasing me!" she roared, clenching her fists.
Princess gave a mocking laugh.
-It's just fun. The whole city knows that you are the villains who always fail, for them you are just a joke.- She let out another laugh, but this time somewhat reluctantly, taking her eyes to the darkening sky-. I was a joke for a long time too… I still am.
Brick didn't answer her, he just seemed to cringe instead of her, like he was depressed or something, but Princess didn't think that could happen. Neither of them said anything, so the Princess decided to say the reason why she was there, why she had looked for him.
"I know what happened," she said in a neutral voice, followed by more silence until Brick deigned to say something.
"How could you know?" She asked bitterly.
-It is not obvious? I had access to the security camera, just by pressing a button I could see everything from the television in my mansion, I didn't want to miss anything; and although it had no audio and the quality was deplorable, I was able to see you and Bombón. Why didn't you finish the job? What really happened? - He crossed his arms, waiting for an explanation.
-That doesn't interest you!
"Yes, I don't mind, but I'm dying of curiosity," he admitted. You had it where you wanted it, Brick, you were one step away from it, why didn't you do it?
-I just couldn't, damn it! I didn't have the strength to do it! -He shouted, desperate, hugging her knees, wanting her to just leave once and for all.
"That's ridiculous… Why?" she insisted, more perplexed than before.
-She felt really bad! It hurt me so much to see her like this! I don't understand why, but when I remember it it just hurts me!
"Wait, wait, wait…what?" She could only be amazed at what he had just admitted to her. Did you feel sorry for her? But she is your enemy, you hate her! We hate her!
-I know, that's why I'm so confused! I don't understand, I shouldn't feel like this, I shouldn't have these mediocre and useless feelings!
Are you telling me you've gone soft? I dont believe it.
-It may be so! But I didn't ask for it to happen! I can't help but feel this way.” He clenched his teeth, trying to contain the anger he had at himself.
"You really are crazy, she has ridiculed you all your life, how can you feel sorry for her?" the girl spoke, with contempt.
-She… she looks like us, you and me.
-What?… No, I understand that you feel identified with her because of a little thing that I don't understand, but don't involve me in your emotional problems!
She really had emotional problems, he really had fallen very low, Princess she realized when she heard him sob. Brick was crying?! That could not be true. Princess's posture was immediately broken and she could only feel awkward, shocked, he really was crying.
"Why does it have to be like this?" he said, his voice trembling. Why do we have to be what people expect of us? Why are we so afraid of his opinions? why do we feel empty inside?
Princess knew how to answer that, but she fell silent, shocked at what was happening.
-Bombón couldn't stand it, that's why she ended up like this, she couldn't always be the good one, the pressure destroyed her. And you, you want to change what people think of you, but for them you will always be crazy, Morbucks, they will always see you as a deranged crazy woman obsessed with the Powerpuffs, they will not forget it, they do not want that you change
-Me…
-They want to keep us in the way they see us, they want their perfect idolecto and his villains. But Bombón needs them, I don't understand, but she still loves all those people after all, it's something I can't understand.- she sighed deeply, with difficulty-. If she hides who she really is, it's because she doesn't want to let them down, I can't understand.
"Enough!" she yelled, getting fed up. Why do you do it?! Why do you remind me of my misfortunes?! Why are you telling me about Bombón?! Why are you talking to me about yourself all of a sudden?!” She put her hand to her chest, feeling a little affected by everything she had told her. Why are you telling me all this?! We hate each other, why the hell do you have to tell me?!
-Because you started asking me, silly… And I don't have anyone else to tell.
She crossed her arms, grimaced and stared at the ground, feeling irritated, angry, but sad to remember that her life didn't matter to anyone, that she wasn't loved or appreciated by anyone. That redheaded fool had made her think of that.
Brick finally stood up, turned to see the girl, and she was able to see her tears for the first time, they were real and yet it seemed incredible. The girl tried not to feel bad for him, nor for her questionable mental and emotional health, but it was impossible not to feel something seeing him so destroyed like that; he, who never felt sadness or anything like that.
He stared at her, his red eyes moist and glistening with a wistful expression. Brick, for a moment, had put his pride aside, just so he could vent.
-I…just…sometimes I wish people could believe that Blossom can do something wrong, I wish they believed that you can change. But… it scares me that they find out that a villain can feel something more than hate.- She tried to stifle a sob, but she could only cry more. He brought his hand to his chest, pointing to himself, working up the courage to say the next thing. I'm a person too, Princess!
At last it got dark, it was already night and only the stars and fireflies illuminated. Princess approached Brick, walking so fast that by the time he noticed her she was already within walking distance of her. She was in front of him, looking at him deeply, but saying nothing.
Brick had to look down from her to get a good look, since she was a bit shorter than him. He couldn't help but think that her look was really intimidating, she was really scary, she wanted to step aside from her, but he couldn't move, he stayed in her place for long eternal seconds, wondering what she wanted.
Princess finally looked away, she kept walking forward, passing by Brick's side, she stood still in front of the lake and there she threw the camera she had, thus losing the last evidence they had against Blossom.
"It's over," she said, turning to leave, not saying anything else, leaving as fast as she came.
Brick could only watch her go, remembering everything that had happened and feeling like a complete idiot. He had said it on impulse, but… he felt better. He went back to sit where she had been at the beginning, thinking what to do from now on. What he was sure of was that he never wanted to see Princess again in his life, ever. And not just because she had seen him ridicule himself like that.
Having her in front of him, staring at him, had been so disturbing that she forgot to breathe for the seconds it lasted. It's that she, even being a weak girl, she had a sour damn look, it seemed that she wanted to hit him or something. It had been so disconcerting that she had made him stop crying instantly.

Answer some questions and tag some people.
ETA: OMG you guys I actually remembered to fill out a thing I was tagged in for once
tagged by: the uber talented precious bean also known as @heartunsettledsoul
Nickname: I don’t really have one, unless you count my work nickname, which is the Spin Doctor
Last movie I saw: I’m so not a movie person so I am really struggling to remember. Probably the most recent was my annual viewing of The Holiday over Christmas.
Favorite musicians: Frightened Rabbit, Richard Shindell, Death Cab for Cutie, Janelle Monáe, Paramore, Gregory Alan Isakov
Song stuck in my head: Ultralife by Oh Wonder
Do I get asks: No, but I don’t really do Tumblr much except to look at and reblog pretty things from fandom and keep up with authors I love
Other blogs: Okay I’m stealing @heartunsettledsoul’s answer here: no sideblogs, we cram 8 10 years of obsessions and diary posts into one blog like men
Although actually I did have a Civil War sideblog many, many years ago
Amount of sleep: Fuckity not enough. I for the most genuinely like working a 9-5 job, except for the fact that that schedule so does not work with my natural rhythms. So I never get to sleep early enough -- probably get an average of 6-7 hours during the week, which my neuro issues do not enjoy.
Lucky number: Don’t think I’ve ever had one
What I’m wearing: Riverdale Vixens shirt that I got for my birthday and still sleep in whenever I can
Dream job: A job where I get to shape how American history is presented in education or public history spaces (especially the latter). I would die to get to work for the Parks Service in this capacity at some point.
Dream trip: This is interesting because there are lots of places I would like to go but I don’t know if I’ve thought of one as like a “dream trip”. Honestly the dream is probably to get to live abroad again.
Favorite food: Jamón de bellota, really good stilton, Turkey Hill vanilla bean ice cream, honestly any Italian or Mediterranean food that’s been really well prepared
Play any instruments: I played violin from 3rd grade all the way through the beginning of college, but I honestly couldn’t tell you how much I continued with it because I enjoyed it vs. how much it was out of pressure/obligation. But there are times here and there where I miss it -- I certainly really enjoyed playing as part of an orchestra sometimes.
Favorite song: This is just a mean question. I will say it’s a tie between Janelle Monáe’s “Crazy Classic Life” and Frightened Rabbit’s “Holy”.
Random fact: I don’t own a car and pretty much always love not having one, although I like driving itself.
Describe yourself as aesthetic things: a desktop with spreadsheets always open, a pile of feminist/repro rights signs, a bulletin board overflowing with travel pictures, clear plastic drawers full of neatly organized makeup, candles on every surface, boots and cozy sweaters on rainy days
taaaaagging: @makeitagoodoneeh, @princeofsparkles, @ritterssport, @marmolita, @wistfulwolf if any of y’all want to do it/tagging anyone else who might want to. There are no rules -- we are the rules!

The Millionaire Detective – Balance: UNLIMITED – 04 – Two Lost Puppies
This might be my favorite episode of Balance: UNLIMITED yet, and it only cost Daisuke a scant $500: pocket change for the moths in Daisuke’s pockets if his pants weren’t mothproof. After some kind of quarrel (thankfully left undisclosed) he leaves his family’s palatial mansion on his day off.
Haru summons him to a park, where a fourth grader has guilted him into helping him find his lost puppy. Haru figures Daisuke can just employ the “magic” of his HEUSC and unlimited balance to find the pup, but Daisuke left home in such a hurry he’s without his interface earring, and left his phone in the butler Hattori’s minitruck.
With neither his tech nor any cash on hand and out in the world of ordinary people, Daisuke makes for an amusing fish out of water. Haru initially thinks he ditched him and the kid, but finds Daisuke waiting outside the station where Haru dropped the kid off to be united with his parents.
That’s when we learn that Suzue, who ran after him as he fled in the beginning, is desperate for Daisuke to return home; so much so that she hacks every electronic sign in his vicinity in order to urge him to return home.
Due to this cyber-stalking, Daisuke is resolute in not wanting to return home quite yet. Haru assumes he had a fight with his wife, but we officially learn Suzue isn’t Daisuke’s wife, but his “relative.” A relative who dotes on him excessively.
Instead, Daisuke elects to spend the night at Haru’s modest apartment; Haru must answer the question “You really live here?” far more times than he would like. He whips up a mean curry, presents Daisuke with some 1500-yen dry-cured ham that he declares “inedible” since it’s not Jamon Iberico de Bellota, and the two get drunk and watch crime dramas together.
It’s great to see these two do nothing together for once, but Suzue is a nervous wreck with Daisuke out in the world with nary a yen to his name, and pulls an all-nighter observing the giant monitors, drinking several energy shots and developing a strung-out Wednesday Addams appearance.
Seiyu Sakamoto Maaya brings a lot of energy, passion and enthusiasm to Suzue, who loses it when HEUSC almost mockingly declares “Balance: LIMITED.”
The next day Haru wakes to find Daisuke slept in the tub. Haru takes another day off to help the kid search for the dog, but they’re unsuccessful. It’s Daisuke who arrives at dusk with the puppy, or rather a member of the same litter; he learned the kid’s dog was hit by a car, and that it would be best if he didn’t know that.
Daisuke then heads home, not wanting to worry his family “too much”, and treats Suzue to Haru’s family recipe, “The Devil’s Natto Rice”, which of course she loves. In all, an extremely fun and informative low-key outing that was all about the characters.
It’s bonding episodes like these that God of High School desperately needed to establish the three leads as friends. Now that we’ve seen them hang out and do regular stuff together, it’s fully credible that Haru and Daisuke have grown a bit closer and learned a bit more about each other.

Spanish pigs in south Georgia?
And an attempt to introduce pata negra pigs (the raw ‘material’ for the transcendent jamón ibérico de bellota) into the US. Did it succeed?
tl;dr: The answer is “yes”, (of course) albeit with caveats, otherwise I wouldn’t be writing this piece, but read on for a really rather fascinating tale, an act of faith, up there with that whole “walking on water” schtick — and one much more reliably documented than that bearded sky pilot shit — one to encourage anyone looking to change how stuff happens.
“This [ham] is raised in Georgia, and we substituted peanuts and pecans for acorns, and we think it’s just as good [as Iberico]. Or better.”

Is This the World’s Best Way to Raise Pork?
youtube
By Dr. Mercola
Will Harris III, owner of White Oak Pastures in Bluffton, Georgia, says the hogs that forage on his vast Georgia farm are also loose to forage in the woods behind it. He says they not only fill a unique position on his farm’s operation, they also have a unique impact on the land.
Harris, a fourth-generation farmer with a University of Georgia agricultural degree, once adhered to his family’s monoculture tradition, complete with the lack of diversity, and with the use of antibiotics, hormones and chemical weed killer system of farming adopted by the majority of the U.S. Then, 40 years into it, he went certified organic instead. Permaculture Voices says "beyond organic" farming operations "celebrate polyculture and close the loop on sustainability."1
It wasn't long before he established the largest comparable enterprise in the Southeast. Among other ingenious, highly effective farming methods, he allowed his cattle to graze native grasses, brought in sheep to eat the plants the cattle wouldn't, chickens to scratch up dung dropped by the cattle and sheep, and goats and pigs to clear up the leftovers and undergrowth.
Hogs may serve to clear up the scrublands around the farm, Harris says, but one of the greatest examples of symbiosis he's ever seen was when he put his baby goats in the forest with the hogs. In a matter of weeks, the goats looked great — better than any other goats he ever had. He researched extensively until he observed that the goats were eating plants the other animals weren't interested in.
Goats often have "barberpole" worms — parasites — which pass through the goats' systems through their feces and pupate in the earth. When the goats graze the grass, they reinfect themselves. The hogs ate the goat feces, which provide an interesting set of nutrients, but more importantly, they break the life cycle of the barberpole worms, which prevents the goats from picking up the parasites again. In the video above, Harris observes:
"It's a great example of heterosis, it's a great example of why nature abhors monoculture. In a factory farm, you would just have goats, or you would just have pigs. You would not enjoy that symbiosis that nature has given us."2
Making Iberian Ham
One of Harris' next projects at White Oak involved the prospect of importing pigs from Iberia, the peninsula that comprises Spain and Portugal, to create a just-as-delectable ham as the celebrated jamón ibérico de bellota — the highest grade of free-range, acorn-fed, dry-aged Spanish ham — a delicacy described as "transcendent."
He wasn't sure yet whether the pigs would thrive in Georgia's heat, being used to a dry climate and high elevation rather than the South's humidity and low elevation, so there was trepidation about how the porcine beasts would thrive, especially given a new set of pathogens they had no resistance to.
Harris staked his reputation on importing the pigs to Georgia and feeding them the same diet of bellotas, or acorns, they'd foraged on in their native Iberia, where the pigs dubbed "olive trees on legs" had been part of the landscape, literally since the Romans. He would produce the same sweet, dark red, melt-in-your-mouth ham that can cost pork enthusiasts $1,000 for a single leg.
"Harris was wagering hundreds of thousands of dollars, and a good portion of White Oak Pastures' reputation, on a long-odds bet that his foreign pigs could do at least as well in exile as they ever had at home, and make a product at least as delicious. And maybe more …
The fat is the secret to the ham's quality, and the acorns are the genesis of the fat. The nuts — technically, fruits — from the oak species that grow in southwest Europe are low in carbohydrates and high in oleic acid, the same monounsaturated fat that makes olive oil healthy."3
Rather than being pale pink and plump or pale with black spots, Eater.com describes the Iberian pata negra, or "black footed" pigsas "lean and compact, long-snouted and quick," with a black bristly fringe between their ears, but each representing a rare delicacy for pork lovers.
Interestingly, when Iberian pigs were bred with industrial-strength European hog breeds in the 20th century, housed indoors and fed a commercial diet, it didn't take long for the quality of the pork to suffer. In fact, Spanish officials were forced to enact controls to monitor and label quality. Among several grades rated in terms of quality, the highest came from the old method of pigs raised first on grass, then acorns exclusively.
After the financial crash in 2008, which devastated Spain, only a 12 percent-per-year average of the 3 million pigs raised for Iberian ham produced what was designated as bellota-grade, prompting expert ham producers to ask their government to sanction the export of Iberian pigs. It was a first, and there was no "protected designation of origin" label other foods had been given (such as Italy's Parmigiano-Reggiano).
Spanish Investors Tap Iberian Ham Production in the U.S.
One of the problems with Iberian ham, from the perspective of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), was a concern about Spanish slaughterhouse regulations (or possible lack thereof) and the potential for pig diseases. Iberian ham also didn't (yet) have much renown except among international travelers and culinary experts.
Then Jaime and Kurt Oriol, a father-son team from Southwestern Spain, intrigued by both the prospects and the opportunity, began visiting farms in the Midwest and Texas. Someone suggested White Oak Pastures and, after meeting Harris, they canceled the rest of their tour. As the saying goes, they made him an offer his sense of adventure couldn't refuse. Their proposal:
"The vision the Oriols unrolled for Harris was simple, if not easy: They would bring pure ibérico breeding stock from Spain, and Harris would raise them, with the two families splitting the ownership, the expenses and the proceeds. The goal would be to produce jamón ibérico — or at least as close to the original as they could get."4
Harris' hog operation had only been going for a few years when the Orioles contacted him, and he relished the challenge, quipping, "These pigs were an attractive proposition. I didn't have as many hogs as I needed. And raising them is a kind of sexy and challenging thing to do."5
The Oriol-Harris collaboration that resulted in Iberian Pastures in early-January 2015 was followed by months of quarantines on both continents. Then, 24 young, unbred female Iberian pigs and six boars shipped to south Georgia were given the run of a 50-year-old pecan grove. Eater.com notes:
"It was going to be challenging, for sure. Georgia is nothing like the pigs' ancestral home. The dehesa is shallow-soiled and suffers hard droughts. White Oak is almost always humid; it lies on a coastal plain so rich that, 1,000 years before Europeans arrived, indigenous Americans built one of the oldest and largest mound-city settlements in the southeastern U.S. there. Even the oaks are different, water oaks and live oaks instead of the holm oaks and cork oaks in Spain."6
The worry was that such variances could alter the taste of the newly displaced Iberian pigs' meat, as acorn fats and flavor are essential to the jamón ibérico flavor profile. Southern acorns have different fatty acids, aren't as sweet and contain bitter toxins. Looking for a tasty, abundant and nutritious alternative to the Iberian bellotas, Harris found it 12 miles distant in Blakely, Georgia, where it's "all about the peanuts."7
America's Answer to Jamón Ibérico: Country Ham
Country ham production is similar to that used in Spain, starting with carving the back legs, the use of salt to draw out moisture and hanging up the end result for the perfect melding of cool air, enzymes, age and wood smoke. Accordingly, the next, all-important challenge was to find a place to cure the ham they hoped would rival the best jamón ibérico and they found the perfect operation in Iowa — perfect for one simple reason:
"Spanish hams are never smoked — which meant the great American curing houses, and the ham masters who run them, would not be able to produce White Oak's jamón. Nor would White Oak be able to build a curing house of its own: Iberian hams age, instead of rot, in the cool and dry climate of southwestern Spain, and southern Georgia is seldom dry or cool."
Herb and Kathy Eckhouse, owners of La Quercia in Des Moines are noted for making prosciutto using meat from American pigs, but by means of Italian curing techniques. Iberian Pastures slaughtered the first batch of pigs in 2017, after their Iberian-born parents arrived and were mated just two years prior. According to Eckhouse:
"Grapes from all over the world are being grown in the United States. Are they the same as the wines that are made in Bordeaux, or Tuscany? No, they're not. Are they delicious? Yes, they are. We don't expect (our ham) to be the same, or even want it to be the same, but we expect it to be delicious. We want to develop an American tradition."
While the prospect of the pig importing enterprise was certainly not guaranteed, what with being transplanted to an ecosystem vastly different from any had experienced for millennia, the Iberian pigs thrived at White Oak Pastures. Harris was pleased to report they hadn’t lost even one pig. Before long, word regarding the Iberian Pastures “experiment” at White Oaks started circulating among the food industry.
Small amounts of uncured meat that appeared for sale on the company website were quickly snatched up. With availability by the summer of 2019, Harris's daughter, Jenni, traveled around offering samples of the succulent pork to high-end chefs — high end because potential pricing for the hams could be around $1,500 apiece. Exceeding their highest hopes, the finished product, Eater.com relates, was delicious:
"It was charred outside, dark red and juicy within, and marbled so finely that almost no fat was visible. It tasted more like a grass-fed steak than like the lean white meat of commodity pork — like an animal that had enjoyed its life outdoors, chewy and tender and tasting of fresh herbs and blood. It offered a palatable confirmation of how well these foreign pigs had done in their new home, and a promise of what they might become."
It's Not Just About the Meat — It's About the Soil
NPR recently published an article about a growing "grass-roots movement" to keep more roots in the soil. While that may sound counterintuitive, it really is about the roots, but the goal is to "promote healthy soil that's full of life." It's a healthy endeavor: One farmer commented that in some areas, dirt doesn't even smell like dirt anymore. There's hope, though.
The concept that soil can be healthy is not just among organic farmers and agricultural fringe groups. The movement as well as the debate seems to be an emerging narrative in farm periodicals, trickling down to small farmers across the U.S. Food companies are talking about a new eco-label to go alongside "organic" and "fair trade." There's a hope that "regenerative agriculture" — building healthy soil — will become the new normal.
There's a caveat, though. The author notes "There's no universally accepted measure of soil health, nor a clear definition of regenerative farming." Each farmer approaches it individually, like Del Ficke of Pleasant Dale, Nebraska, who says he recalls the moment he "heard a call from God to farm in a different way, one that felt closer to the native prairie that used to flourish in eastern Nebraska."8
In essence, an almost tangible appeal to leave the so-called technological, "modern" approach to farming resonated with Ficke, who emphasizes that the soil as we once knew it is "endangered" and that we're running out of time to remedy it. "Tillage," he stresses, "is the most destructive thing in agriculture." NPR notes:
"That's not even controversial anymore. Many farmers have adopted 'no-till' farming, recognizing its environmental benefits. But (after) Ficke … harvests his corn or soybeans, he plants something else on those fields right away — often a mixture of grasses and legumes like cowpeas. On some of that land, he keeps those 'cover crops' growing right on through the next summer, instead of conventional crops like corn. His cattle graze on those fields the way bison once grazed on the prairie."9
In this way, decaying roots, as well as manure and urine from grazing cattle in resting soil, are enriched, growing darker, more fertile and "chock-full of microbes and fungi." The difference today is that, while this isn't new information, the possibility that the soil really can be amended naturally is. As a result, what was scoffed at by investors in the latest chemical-driven farming methods a mere five years ago seems to be taking root.
Is Plant Diversity the Key to Soil Health?

Gabe Brown of Bismarck, North Dakota, contends that "tillage destroys carbon, soil life, structure, infiltration and water holding capacity." Graze Online10 quotes the essence of Brown's farming philosophy: that "no planted crop will build soil health as quickly and completely as a well-managed and very diverse perennial pasture."
Brown's response to his conviction is to load the seed boxes on his no-till drill with 15 to 25 species at a time. His crop diversity ranges from warm and cool season grasses to broadleaf crops; buckwheat to barley; turnips to triticale.
"The crop ground here is seeded to cover crops during the course of the growing season … the goal here is to keep the ground covered and a living root in the soil as much of the year as possible, often with highly diverse 'cocktail' mixes of forages … all for the purpose of providing good forage yields while also building soils."11
Brown also maintains that "mob grazing" is another facet of the operation. He keeps a ratio density of about 685,000 pounds of beef cattle per acre to graze — and meanwhile, trample — about 60 percent of the forage lands, and provide natural fertilizer and other benefits to the soil.
Like Harris’ operation, the cattle and plant diversity are symbiotic with the richness of the soil. In addition, Brown quit using commercial fertilizers in 2008 and insecticides or fungicides about 20 years ago. His plan for 2013 was to eliminate the use of herbicides, trusting the plant diversity and cattle grazing to “do their thing.” The American Society of Agronomy reported12 that plant roots serve a much greater purpose than many people imagine in regard to nutrition and soil health.
The soil around a plant’s roots is referred to as the rhizosphere. You can’t see it, but the chemical compounds called exudates are quite different from ordinary soil. At the University of Aberdeen, Paul Hallett and colleagues found that rhizosphere phytochemicals are excreted, somewhat like gastric juices, to “liberate” soil nutrients as an important component of soil microbiome. According to Science Daily:
"Exudates also have an important role in holding soil together. Roots and fungi that live in the soil hold together larger clumps of soil, but exudates work on the micro level. Like glue, they hold together soil particles in important mechanical networks. Soil scientists call these soil networks aggregates."13
However, “Whereas the binding effects of roots and fungal networks are usually long-term, exudates' influence on the soil can be fleeting; root exudates don’t have a long-term effect, and the type of soil, whether clay, loam or sand, for instance, can vary."14 As for Brown’s farming, his experimentation took a few hits over a few seasons, but he’s convinced that “failure” is the only way to push the envelope, thereby putting the “tried” into the “true.
He's convinced, as surrounding farmers who once speculated over the sustainability of his methods have become convinced, that it's worth it in the long run. Jay Fuhrer of Burleigh County, North Dakota's Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) observed that many of the area's farmers have modified their methods, at least on portions of their land, in that way "taking important steps toward improving soil health and moisture retention in precipitation-challenged central North Dakota."15
Agricultural Scientists Have Been Doing Their Homework, Too
In 2017, the journal Environmental Science & Technology published a study16 making the case for recycling livestock manure as at least a partial substitute for synthetic fertilization, in part to alleviate environmental degradation due to the effects of nitrogen. That in turn might affect food security and soil greenhouse gas emissions. The researchers explored its effect on crop productivity, yield and use efficiency, as well as:
"Reactive (nitrogen) losses (ammonia emission, nitrogen leaching and runoff), (methane, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide) emissions and soil organic carbon sequestration in agroecosystems … We conducted a global meta-analysis of 141 studies and found that substituting livestock manure for synthetic (nitrogen) fertilizer significantly increased crop yield by 4.4 percent and significantly decreased reactive nitrogen losses."17
Testing in different soil types, including paddy fields and hill areas, the scientists found that using "real" manure decreased ammonia emissions by 26.8 percent; nitrogen leaching by 28.9 percent and nitrogen runoff by 26.2 percent. The property or viability of the soil organic carbon, or SOC, was also "significantly increased." The upshot: Recycling livestock manure in agroecosystems was recommended, as it improves crop productivity, reduces reactive nitrogen pollution and increases the viability of the soil.
NPR notes that when carbon is replaced in the soil, the effects of reduced fertilizer reduce erosion, and soil with decaying roots and accompanying microbes soak up water like a sponge, so plant nutrients perpetuate themselves naturally. However, while these facts may be acknowledged across the board, getting farmers in place economically to "reverse the bus," as it were, is one of the biggest hurdles in the entire farming industry.
"That's the catch. Planting those additional soil-building cover crops costs money up-front … and it takes years to see the benefits. This is the main reason why only 5 or 10 percent of farmers in Iowa are really doing it."18
Yes, avant-garde farmers and their talk of helping the environment by regenerating the soil naturally may have been regarded skeptically by their neighbors at first, but now some of the most influential voices in the industry have been taking the conversation seriously, including Monsanto, General Mills and Walmart, according to NPR, and more than one prestigious environmental organization.
There's a little healthy skepticism regarding the underlying motives behind big money backing endeavors toward soil health. For his part, Ficke doesn't necessarily trust that the enthusiasm is genuine. There's just too much money on the line. As Permaculture Voices notes: "Converting a conventional operation requires a lot of commitment and determination on behalf of the decision maker. In corporate industrial farming operations that can be tough due to the bureaucracy of power."19
Then there's the question of the best soil for different areas and what "regenerative farming" means from region to region. There's still a lot of speculation and, understandably, trepidation; farmers et al. have poured what may amount to billions of dollars into equipment, materials and supplies, with the threat that the inertia-driven farming philosophies would come to a screeching halt.
Still, for the farmers who put their lives and livelihoods on the line to determine for themselves — and for others looking on — all are convinced it's worth it, not only for the conjecture of symbiosis but for the sake of soil health, which one way or another affects all of us. But it's not just for huge farming operations consisting of hundreds of acres. You can enrich the soil in your own backyard garden.
Try planting cover crops in between the harvesting of your tomatoes, cucumbers, broccoli and beets.
Your current lawn and ornamental plants could be transitioned to become more vegetables and other edibles.
Even if you have only a patio, porch or flower pot, you can grow sprouts, herbs, vegetables and even fruit trees, according to Rodale's Organic Life.20
Eating foods that are grown organically and with nutritionally charged roots is not just a good idea. Changing the toxic agricultural systems that have been set up and locked in place to grow "bigger and better" crops is crucial to the health and survival of future generations, not only in the U.S., but the world.

June at Villa Amapola
June in the Axarquia is a beautiful month. The weather is warm but not yet baking. The land is still green and there are masses of wild flowers.
Stands of bright red Poppies, daisies, wild roses, oleander, clumps of tiny blue wild iris, huge ball-like alliums, and white garlic flowers.
Around Villa Amapola the air is thick with birdsong and the humming of bees collecting pollen: thyme, rosemary and orange flower are some of the delicious varieties of the famous local honey of the region.
There are hoopoe birds, with their striped bodies and crests of plumage, swooping swallows, blackbirds, yellow wagtails, cuckoos, woodpeckers - and tiny owls that emit a sort of electronic beeping sound that makes visitors check their phones for incoming messages!
The almond blossom has finished by now, but the olive blossom is just beginning, and the pomegranate trees are bursting with bright red flowers.
On a warm spring evening, the scent of jasmine is intoxicating.
This is a perfect time to enjoy the natural beauty of the region. The weather is cool enough for hillwalking, cycling and horse riding, but it’s still warm enough to dress lightly and enjoy an outdoor picnic, taking in some of the breathtaking scenery.
The hills below Mount Maroma, dotted with olive trees and topped with picturesque white villages, sweep down towards Lake Vinuela with the Mediterranean glittering in the distance.
If you take a stroll along the country tracks you'll see donkeys, horses, goats, sheep and sometimes oxen with great horns pulling old fashioned wooden carts with huge spoked wheels.
It can feel as if you've taken a trip back in time, the pace of life in this part of Andalucia is relaxed and leisurely, and some things are still done in the way of the old traditions.
Wine making, hand pressed olive oil, goats and sheeps milk "manchego" cheeses - all are made as they always were. The local food is like the local character - strong and colourful!
Try a refreshing tomato Gazpacho or the almond soup "ajo blanco", a plate of the delicious Iberican "bellota" ham, home made tortilla, salty lamb chops cooked on the barbecue, anchovies in oil and vinegar and of course the Malaga speciality of “fritura” - deep-fried battered mixed fish - sort of like the English fish and chips, but with a Spanish twist!
Spanish red wine, especially Rioja, is famous and excellent quality, but in hot weather the local Rose wine is cooling and refreshing, with notes of peach and melon. Tinto de Verano "summer wine" is a refreshing mix of red wine and iced lemonade, Sangria adds a dash of spirits and pieces of fruit, and is a deceptively heady mixture!
A visit to the white villages makes a pleasant day trip. The ancient Moorish outpost village of Comares is perched atop a vertical hill and from a distance resembles a fairy castle!
Every Spanish village has a selection of bars and restaurants offering tempting tapas, and there is usually a local fiesta with parades, costumes, stalls and music at one village or another, if you fancy sampling a little local colour! People are friendly and love children, and if you can speak a very few words of Spanish the locals will be keen to chat with you and answer your questions.
We hope you'll come and visit this beautiful and vibrant part of Andalucia, and see for yourself how special it is.
Not just a place to come and lie by the pool (although you can do that too, of course!), but a place to explore and discover a whole new world of colours and flavours.
With love, from Villa Amapola
