Sticky Notes and Serendipity, Chapter 16: Fathers and Fevers
AO3
Chapter 16 is up now! Apologies for the delayed posting, but we're glad to have this chapter out for you all now. This is a shorter chapter, but a sweet one. We hope you enjoy it!
Note: @brendadaaedestler and I recently made the decision to lock our fics down to only registered users on AO3 after seeing posts about an AI company using bots to scrape fics for their own website. The issue still has not been completely resolved; the website seems to have gone down, but things still appear somewhat shady around the whole thing. That said, our fics will be staying locked for now. We apologize to any who were reading Sticky Notes as a guest. Hopefully, we will be able to unlock it in the near future for any who do not wish to create an account <3

1990 Phantom Fic Recs
Since the lovely @wheel-of-fish's stream of the 1990 TV production of POTO, I have been unable to stop thinking about Cherik and know there are countless others who likely feel the same.
Perhaps the only thing more tragic than the ending is the fact that there's so few 1990 fics! And among those tagged many of them take some character inspiration but don't really use the unique premise and setup and characters provided in the Y/K miniseries. So I've decided to compile this list of a few of my favourites! Enjoy!
what i would best like to see by queeenciri
A much gentler and happier picnic unmasking, where Christine reacts a little differently! I love the character work in this fic; the thoughts and emotions of the characters feel so real, and it really breaks down their motivations.
Together We Dream by Anonymous
This one is brand new and I'm in love with the prose and writing style of it! An extra conversation between Erik and Christine, one that could fit into canon or be a turning point. Christine reflects on some similarities between them, and it leads to this emotional conversation with angst and joy entwined gorgeously.
How Deep the Bullet Lies by oprhan__account
This is more of a hurt/comfort and whump fic, where Erik survives the ending of the miniseries. It's mainly him processing the events of the show and musing on what comes next, and does have a ending that is pointing towards things improving! Currently listed as chapter 1/? , but it's still worth reading as a fantastic exploration of an intriguing concept.
Sunflowers by CottagecoreCandlelight
Incredibly fluffy E/C, where Christine gifts Erik some sunflowers. Filled with the adorable shyness and sweetness that this couple has, and I'm in love with the visual image of 1990 Erik and his bouquet of sunflowers. They suit him very well!
Understatement by BrendaDaaeDestler
Erik takes Christine on their first date together! Fluff including a candlelit dinner and slow dancing. This is an AU where Gerard is willing to set up such a date, but the main focus is the budding romance between Erik and Christine.
A Magical World by pippa-writes
This is actually a collection of four ficlets! They're mostly canon compliant, and range from Christmas fluff to Christine regretting the picnic unmasking. The first one is even a Phillipe centric look at Christine's grief post canon (unfortunately with the canon ending), which I find quite unique and fascinating.
Rêver by trace-of-rouge
Somewhat tragic and angsty one shot, this is Erik musing on the nature of dreams and his feelings for Christine. It's a very good short character study, and I really enjoy the insight into Erik's thoughts.
The Strange Case of Monsieur Belladova by NPennyworth
If I constantly reread my own story then I'm allowed to put it on my own phic rec list, and I am seriously quite proud of how this one turned out! I wanted to explore a happier AU where Erik gets to just work at the opera house; this is written from the perspective of the opera company as they debate whether to say anything about the mask, but it seems rude to point it out when nobody else has. Mostly humor and fluff, with background E/C.

new to phantom stuff, why are those two last names so popular?
They're the last names from the two most popular screen adaptation (other than the 1925 Lon Chaney silent film and the 2004 ALW adaptation with Gerard Butler)
"Erik Destler" is his name in the 1989 version with Robert Englund.
Tumblr media
It's a sort of slasher-y take on the story, set in England, not France and has a Faustian element: Erik Destler, a composer sells his soul to the devil to create the world's most beautiful music, but in return the devil disfigures him so that his music will be the only thing anyone could love about him. It's quite a gory version (rather than wear a mask he skins his victims and sews their flesh to his ruined face), but he's actually one of the most romantic and vulnerable interpretations I've seen.
Tumblr media
He's never outright called "Erik Carriere" in the 1990 two-part mini-series with Charles Dance (Which is based on the Yeston-Kopit book/play, rather than Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical), but we (***SPOILERS***) discover that Burt Lancaster's character, M. Carriere is his father in the second half.
Tumblr media
Carriere and Erik's mother had him out of wedlock, so technically Erik's last name legally would be his mother's (she's referred to only by the mononym "Belladova"), but ~shrugs~. The basic plot is the same old story, except there's no "Angel of Music" charade, the Changy boy is called "Phillipe" rather than Raoul, it's set in the Edwardian Era rather than the 1880's and Erik's mother loved him, rather than rejected him, but died early. Also he was raised by his father. This version of Erik is EXTREMELY popular. He's not my favourite, but he's definitely a phan-phavorite. He's quite a gentle take on the Erik character, which is part of his popularity. You can find this version on YouTube if it tickles your curiosity. The Robert Englund version is a bit harder to track down but I recommend watching both at least once.

Do you know if voice tracks were used for the Yeston and Kopit version to avoid voice strain like Webber's does?
Well, I think I'd dispute that voice tracks are used in Webber's musical to prevent voice strain. Most of the pre-recordings, like the Phantom's in 'Notes I' and 'Notes II' and other, smaller bits, are to add echo and create that "revolving voice" effect that so effectively makes you think the Phantom is everywhere in the theater. 'Why So Silent' is also pre-recorded, but that's because for the actor to move the Red Death's mask, he has to move his jaw in a way that makes singing very difficult.
And as for the title song, that was originally sung live, but right after the first or second performance, they realized it would not work because it would pick up all the backstage noise and the actors' heavy breathing as they ran around trying to get to the travelator. So while preventing vocal strain could be one reason, and is probably one good side effect of using a pre-recording, it wasn't the main reason at the time. And it must be said that some actresses will sing live over the recording and that there are even productions that only pre-record the first portion of that song, and that everything after the boat emerges is sung live.
Anyway, as for your actual question... I don't know Yeston and Kopit's Phantom all that well if I'm honest, so I can't say for certain exactly where a pre-recording will be used. It also doesn't help that the Y/K version is much less restrictive in how its productions are run; there really isn't an "original" blocking, as far as I can tell, that is mimicked the way Webber's version is. Productions will often change not only costumes and blocking, but switch entire scenes and songs around, so that makes it hard to pinpoint when and where certain things are done, because it's always different.
That being said, I can think of one place where many productions might use a voice track, and that might be during Gerard's story / the flashback scene where we see Gerard and Belladova (Erik's mother) having their romance. Belladova in the Y/K version is a dancer, so productions will often show her, well, dancing (sometimes doing a full-blown ballet routine), but she is also said to have a beautiful voice, which is also demonstrated during that scene. Well, if you know anything about singing, it's pretty difficult to do after you've done a whole dance routine because you're out of breath, you're tired, all the oxygen is anywhere but your lungs, plus it's somewhat uncommon to find someone who can both dance and sing at the level required for the musical. The solution? A pre-recording.
I imagine there are a few potential other places, but that's the big one I can think of. Others, from people who know Y/K better than I do?

Hi belladova, is your Hopeless Romantic Trait Mods compatible with Dreadpirate's Aromantic mod?
Hello, sorry for the late reply, I had hoped to reply with a compatible version release but truthfully I just haven't gotten around to it yet and you're not the first person to ask. So unfortunately no its not but its on my to-do list :)

Our system, but instead of Jon it's Erik, Christine, Gustave, Raoul, Meg, Gangle, Squelch, Fleck, Gerard, & Belladova. We use our middle names (like me), last names, the actor/ess' name in some compacity, or something to do with the source (IE Glenn is because of Glenn Slater the lyricist) ~Jacques
fictive culture is forming a fictive from a different version of a character you already have a fictive of and trying to figure out what the hell to call the new one. do we just keep calling him john² or
Jon
