The return of skinny (TW: mentions of eating disorders, self harm and drug use/abuse)
Kim Kardashian supposedly dropped around 7 kg to fit into Marilyn Monroe's iconic Happy Birthday Mr President dress, then both her and Khloe stopped getting BBLs, Bella hadid quite literally wearing a dress that was spray painted on her, I could go on, what ever has the world come to? It really shouldn't be a surprise, especially due to the 20 year cycle, 2020 saw the return of early 90s fashion with the legs of jeans getting wider and shirts getting shorter and now with the low rise jeans, juicy tracksuits, essentially trying your hardest to emulate christina aguilera at the 2002 VMAs and not even coming close, (queen, icon, absolute diva) in the name of the Y2K. This fated 20-year cycle is what got me thinking (yes it was very difficult and yes i will be taking donations), while yes, the 90s and 2000s have notable and arguably good influence in fashion today, who's to say that the arguably (to be noted, this is not an argument, what i say is 100% factual and should be the standard thought worldwide (also to be noted, the world would likely burn if this was to be implemented, i in fact am incredibly dumb)) bad and harmful styles as well practices done in the name of fashion wont come back either, whos to say it hasn't already.
Heroin chic is a style and essentially a movement that was gaining momentum in the early 90s. It was a direct response to the overly healthy fitness-crazy models in the 80’s with tanner skin and toned bodies. It was popularised by models like Gia Carangi, Jaime King, Kate Moss just to name a few. Heroin chic “started off as a photography trend, it was championed by photographers like Corinne Day, David Sims, Craig McDean, and Davide Sorrenti” (Le). Drugs, particularly the abuse of the recreational variety, were demonised throughout history, As Youtube video essayist Mina Le puts it, drugs were often associated with signs of weakness and therefore femininity, or the generalised exoticism of non-western cultures and perceiving it as bohemian. This demonisation continued as many WW1 soldiers started using due to the horrific conditions they were kept in, fast forward to the 60s-70s in America, people were tired of poor working conditions and were generally not happy with their lives, drugs provided a fleeting escape from reality. On top of this, in the 80s, the excessively happy, healthy and luxurious image portrayed by advertisements and models like Cindy Crawford, Brooke Shields and El McPherson. However this fitness crazed portrayal wasn't appealing to many young people especially because of the happenings of the world then. The youth at the time would be going to work into an economy in a recession. This rejection of happy go lucky idealism sparked the grunge, punk and from that, the riot grrrl movement (my lord and saviour kathleen hanna). Large fashion magazines found themselves losing touch with this generation of dirty realists and were replaced by smaller magazines like Face ID, Detour and a variety of zines made by smaller groups of individuals. Dirty realism was a movement that focused on the bleak and arid social climate of the world, photographers aimed to produce art that shocked the general public. This movement eventually trickled down into fashion. Articles of clothings and styles of dressing that were previously deemed unseemly were now in style, specifically the clothing that accentuated the thinness of the wearer like low rise jeans. However will Vogue recover from this loss in popularity? In 1993 Vogue magazine hired photographer Corinne Day to do a shoot where Kate Moss (nothing tastes as good as skinny feels) was photographed in her underwear and a threadbare shirt in a ‘pretty underwhelming setup’ (figure_). This infamous shoot created public outcry due to it being in stark contrast to the glossy, full-of-life spreads that were commonplace in any shoot for Vogue magazine. Despite the shoot being a watered down version of dirty realism and heroin chic, it is considered to be when heroin chic first entered mainstream media. Corinne Day later, in 1955 photographed Regina Brixton, in true heroin chic fashion, dressed in nothing but lingerie, in a small, dim, ratty carpeted room with confused facial expression and her body contorted in a somewhat unnatural way.
The fashion industry wasn't the only large industry promoting and glamourising unhealthy and harmful practices, we've got Hollywood as well as the music scene of the 90s to thank for that as well. Films produced by large studios were released, many of which romanticised heroin use/abuse as well as the use of other recreational drugs in films like Gridlock’d , Traffic, Pulp Fiction , and Bringing Out the Dead (Tonkovich). As Tonkovich comments on in his paper, a majority of these films depicted the upper middle class suburban teenager partaking in the use of heroin, most films depicted the high as hazy, ethereal and beautiful. Therefore pushing drug abuse into the ‘culture’ of the people the films were about. The ability to change your body on a whim because a certain body type isn't popular or desirable anymore is a luxury only provided to the wealthy and upper class and honestly, is borderline dystopian. Ozempic is a drug that is used to treat type 2 diabetes but its more popular use is to lose weight that costs around “$900 for a one-month supply” (Willson). It is both unhealthy and takes it away from people (type 2 diabetics) who may genuinely need it all just to look like you just walked out of a crack den but to be able to spend. Coming back to kim kardashian, along with other celebrities with large audiences, bragging that she lost 7kg doesn't set a good precedent for all of the people, namely young girls following her. Trends spread so much faster now in the age of social media, TikTok now is what tumblr was then (no offense guys). Tumblr was infamous for having hundreds of blogs being pro-eating disorder and self harm so when tumblr banned blogs that promoted self harm, anorexia, bulimia and other eating disorders in 2012, these communities found their homes in other social media platforms like MySpace, Pinterest, Instagram, and Reddit and more recently, TikTok (Pitcher). While TikTok has guidelines and restrictions a lot of pro eating disorder content is posted covertly, things like “thinspo”, “body checking” and certain “what i eat in a day” videos. The general rejection of curves and body fat in general is both unhealthy but is also rooted in racism. In “Fearing the Black Body: The Racial Origins of Fat Phobia,” by Sabrina Strings, she mentions that fatphobia most likely has in which colonists asserted that Black people were prone to gluttony and sexual excess. This portrayal of non whiteness resulted in Europeans of higher classes priding themselves on their ‘dainty’ and ‘sophisticated’ stature when being bigger was a sign of success and status, just look at Henry the eighth.
Not only was the heroin chic trend dangerous due to the implications that drug use and being starved is a good thing but also the addition of the classist institution that is high-fashion as well as the subliminal messaging to BIPOC women saying that their bodies were not desirable or beautiful. Trends can come back, you don't have to participate in them, in fact I would strongly discourage you from participating (in heroin chic if it does come back), not only is the constant and rapid rotation and creation of trends harmful to the planet but also to people's views of their bodies and themselves.
If you, or if anyone you know is suffering with an eating disorder and needs help in England, please call +44 0808 801 0677.
