"What are we planning to dress up as for Halloween?" Dick passed you a cup of coffee while you placed a twenty-dollar bill on the counter. Walking out of the coffee shop, Dick courteously held the door open as you both strolled down the bustling Blüdhaven sidewalk, hand in hand.

Pausing to consider his question, you suggested, "How about Morticia and Gomez?" He took a sip of his coffee and asked, "Who?" You looked at him in disbelief, saying, "The Addams family?"

He shook his head, still clueless. "We watched the show on Netflix," you reminded him. His eyes widened in realization, "Oh yeah! I fell asleep watching that, didn't I?"

As you continued walking down the lively Blüdhaven sidewalk, you playfully elaborated on your Halloween costume idea. "Picture it – black dresses, eerie charm, and dark humor. It could be a blast," you said, a hint of excitement in your voice.

Dick, now catching on, chuckled at the imagery. "Ah, got it. The spooky, mysterious couple."

You both shared a laugh, the prospect of transforming into Morticia and Gomez adding a playful vibe to the bustling city atmosphere. The scent of coffee lingered as you meandered through the crowd, discussing potential details for your Addams family-inspired Halloween adventure.

Then realization struck. The exact reason you couldn't go as Morticia and Gomez dawned on you – someone you knew had already chosen that iconic duo. The thought of two sets of the Addams couple at the party seemed awkward. Desiring something more unique, you explained the situation to Dick as you both crossed the street. He understood and agreed that opting for a more original costume was the best course of action.

While you both crossed the street, you and Dick brainstormed costume ideas, but none seemed to strike a chord. As you reached the steps of the Blüdhaven police department, Dick suddenly gasped, stopping in his tracks. You followed suit, halting your steps.

"What?" you asked, curious.

"I just thought of the perfect costume," he declared.

"Which is?" you inquired.

With a hint of cheesiness, he suggested, "You could be the Barbie to my Ken!"

You couldn't help but cringe at the line, but it didn't stop you from bursting into laughter.

"Why didn't I think of that?" you exclaimed, still amused by the Barbie and Ken idea.

Entering the police department, you and Dick received warm greetings from your coworkers before settling down at your shared desk. Reflecting on Dick's suggestion, you smiled and said, "I'd love to be your Barbie, Grayson."

The Marilyn Portfolio, Untitled Bella Goth, and Professor Venomous' Self Portrait

Marilyn Diptych, Andy Warhol, 1962

After Marilyn Monroe's unfortunate death in 1962, Andy Warhol released the Marilyn Diptych. The base portrait is a cropped, zoomed in reference pulled from a promotional shoot Marilyn posed in for her starring role in the movie Niagara. This portrait was screen-printed 50 times in color to black and white with varying degrees of quality/deterioration. Warhol's intention was to marry commercial art and celebrity culture with the kind of worship and devotional imagery found in churches and Christian art.

The Marilyn Diptych takes part of its inspiration from classic triptychs: multi-panel works depicting religious scenes and figures. Where classic triptychs were made to endorse and deepen someone's faith in God, the Marilyn Diptych was commentary on celebrity worship and how celebrities could and were placed on pedestals similarly to religious figures. The portrait repetition mirrored how often Marilyn was typecast as a "dumb blond" in movie roles. Because of how heightened celebrities are, they are the subject of intense public scrutiny. Their personal lives are as much spectacle and centers of intrigue as the fictitious characters they portray.

Her public image was the blonde bombshell and sex symbol; a fantasy that men lusted after and women both envied and admired. When Marilyn was outed as a scandalous subject because of her past pin-up work or the dicey nature of her movie roles, it only strengthened her image and reputation. Though, the fact her past was placed under such scrutiny and everything about her was subject to similar microscope slide treatment shows how much more Marilyn was seen as a character instead of an actual person. Marilyn wanted her celebrity image to exist as a separate, distinct entity from her personal life. Warhol's various Marilyn works are described as a tribute to Marilyn's desire for just this. Works like Marilyn Diptych are part of the library of iconic imagery that draws attention to Marilyn, but the hope is to redirect and keep focus towards Marilyn the immortalized image instead of the person behind the image.

Marilyn Monroe portfolio, Andy Warhol, 1967

The Marilyn Monroe portfolio series is a popular set of images to pull inspiration from for other derivative art and even art assets in games or shows. The intent behind the Diptych is similar to the inspiration for the Marilyn Monroe portfolio series. Though, the biggest difference is that the portfolio works center more on channeling commercial art and playing with varying color theory. Each of the works can stand separately as an individual piece because of how the dramatically different color schemes can change the mood or theming of the portrait. These weren't made as a deliberate, cohesive whole like the Diptych. That said, the varied, careful, and deliberate approach to color theory sets the portfolio as a striking but convenient set to reference or recreate.

In The Sims 2, the in-game Bella Goth pop art piece Untitled draws inspiration from the Marilyn portfolio series. Not only is the in-game art named after one of the Marilyn portraits, Untitled features a magazine posed and smiling series of Bella Goth in 9 different color variations.

Bella Goth has become an unofficial mascot for the Sims series ever since The Sims 2. In the original Sims, Bella, her husband Mortimer, and their daughter Cassandra were inspired by the classic kooky, creepy, and lovable Addams family. They share the Addams' love for Gothic and the macabre; they dress in darker colors and live in a Victorian flavored mansion next to a prominent graveyard. Most people are also familiar with Gomez and Morticia as a pair of hopeless romantics. Gomez peppers Morticia with shameless flirts and kisses. One of the iconic scenes in the 90's theatrical movies features a series of champagne corks popping off as Gomez dips and deeply kisses his wife. To an extent, Mortimer and Bella are supposed to recapture or echo Gomez and Morticia. Player success in recreating this are varied because of the finicky mood and intensive needs micromanaging Sims requires. If players can kick off successful romantic interactions between Sims, one of the kiss options is 'Passionate,' which features a tender embrace and dramatic music swell. This isn't directly related to Mortimer and Bella, but it isn't a stretch that these two might perform these interactions autonomously on a community lot.

After the Sims, Mortimer and Bella's relationship becomes muddied. Where Mortimer and Bella could be seen as a do-not-separate unit before, Bella easily overshadows Mortimer or the other Goths as a notable figure in her own right. In the PSP spin-off for Sims 2, Bella confides in the player that she only married her husband for the money and was in the process of running away from him period. In the mainline Sims 2 for PC, Bella has mysteriously disappeared. In-game bread crumbs point towards alien abduction, potential meddling from Bella's freshly-introduced sister-in-law that has convenient family ties with aliens, and Bella's prominent feature in the art for the paranormal-flavored and Area 51-inspired neighborhood Strangetown.

Game devs wrote an official Q and A with the Bella in Strangetown on the unfortunately-retired Sims 2 site. This Q and A was dropping further breadcrumbs about nefarious actors trying to use her as a means to get to Mortimer's neon green life-extending potion. There's no direct confirmation as to the why behind Bella's abduction, let alone concrete details on what happened after. Everything is a series of vague hints; pieces that the player strings together for their own personal soap opera. Overall, Bella's disappearance is something that has fascinated and enraptured players for years. There's still people writing stories, speculating, and drumming up theories about her 20 years later!

In game, Bella is portrayed as a beloved and highly charismatic socialite. She's a local celebrity. Artists are so enchanted by her that she has several pieces of in-universe art and sculpture modeled after and made in tribute to her specifically. Placing Bella as the subject for an art piece inspired by Warhol's Marilyn Monroe portraits is a stroke of genius. Bella is an iconic, larger-than-life figure among her in-universe admirers and Sims enthusiasts alike. The mystery around her catapulted her from fun pre-made character to such an established character in Sims canon that players expect some news about her or some hint at her presence in every existing Sims game, past and upcoming. She's beautiful, she's tragic, and she's such a mystery. Because of how few details players have to work with or piece together, Bella captures the imagination and plays with the theater of the mind. Regardless of how effective Simmers may consider Bella's story, it's become a front-and-center example for the storytelling potential a Sims game can have.

Marilyn is described as the postergirl for Hollywood glamour and part of celebrity culture. She has a very iconic look: heavy lidded eyes, sculpted bob, and red lips. Bella is considered fashionable and glamorous. While there has been some variation in her hair color, she's best known for her classic red dress. No matter how Bella's design or fashion is changed to try and keep pace with changing trends, the red dress is a staple. Red is Bella's trademark. In a fitting way, Bella is the immortal icon of the Sims world. She may have an official playable Sim in Sims 4, but her presence as a figure in Sims 2 will always eclipse or influence every following iteration of her in some way, shape, form, or respect.

There's also a Marilyn Diptych inspired portrait of Professor Venomous in the cartoon O.K. K.O. This portrait is prominently featured on his wall whether its at his house or in his personal office at Boxmore. Lord Boxman has a repurposed version of Michaelangelo's famous Creation of Adam mural placing himself in the role of God and his robot kids as the 'Adam' or otherwise reaching out towards him. This repurposed art is a cheeky nod towards Boxman expressing sentiments like 'I am your god!' to his first robot Mr. Logic and how much emphasis he places on the power trip he holds as the Boxbots' dad. Given the context of the original Marilyn portfolio, the Professor's variant might be part of his attempt to reconstruct himself and his self-image. The Marilyn portraits depict a very specific version of her; a very careful and highly curated image.

As soon as viewers learn about his alter-ego Shadowy Figure, the Professor tries to present the split as a Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde situation. Professor Venomous is his smooth-talking, level-headed, and reasonable public image. He has moments of being obnoxious or showing some irritation, but he usually tries to school his expressions. There's some level of restraint and control. Shadowy Figure is openly cruel and sadistic. He's the culmination of the more impulsive and desperate things Venomous wants to do: In his previous role as Laserblast, he was publicly reamed for suggesting inventions like a ray that permanently debilitates super powers, shrinks someone to subatomic level, or other obvious harm. He's openly evil as the Professor, but still feels some need to protect his image and reputation. He's still a very private and guarded person. At the very least, the increased secrecy as Shadowy Figure is an extra layer to make it harder to trace anything Venomous-related back to Laserblast and reveal his big secret.

Narrative ties aside, the Professor's portrait is also an interesting parallel to some of the art direction choices around him. Marilyn Monroe was considered a sex symbol. As Laserblast, he was called 'the hot hero' in a newspaper headline for his obituary. Otherwise, the Professor was given an elevator eyes treatment from Lord Boxman. That scene can be argued as a POV camera that's similarly applied to Boxman from Venomous' perspective and again applied in a ship-bait scene between Enid and Red Action. There's also the how-did-this-slip-past-censors scene where the Professor is leaning back in his office chair, legs spread, and slight drool dripping from his mouth. That scene has the same energy as a sex appeal fan service camera in most anime. The camera is full-on ogling Venomous here. This move was as deliberate as Studio Bones turning a Reigen Arataka undress and shower scene into something more dramatic and theatrical than the mundane, candid shot it is in the manga it was adapted from. At least Reigen's scene has a layer of irony to it; it's a Poe's Law situation where viewers aren't 100% sure if the fan service approach is a joke or earnest.

It's not an appropriate one-to-one comparison to Marilyn's sex symbol status, but it's interesting to look at both the cartoon's portrayal of Professor Venomous as well as fan reception. He's part of the ever-growing library of Tumblr sexymen and given draco in leather pants treatment. In a roundabout way, the Professor's pop art portrait is a reflection of the complicated commentary around Marilyn and what dialogue the portfolio and other works have drummed up about her image and celebrity culture in general. Characters like the Professor can drum up interesting conversations about how 'sexy' villains are portrayed, how that might impact the way people interact with the story/media they are from, and what it says about the play between someone's looks vs their actions. In the Professor's case, his looks arguably help drum up more sympathy than he might get otherwise. The bigger part of his particular story is about reputation and public image than physical appearance, though. Even when he has a come-to-Jesus moment with his ex, he has a moment of L'oreal model pout, but that doesn't stop Carol from attacking him or demanding answers.

In a nutshell, it's interesting to pick out a Marilyn-inspired self-portrait as part of the Professor's decor. Looking at the history or commentary around Warhol's Marilyn portraits, there's strong emphasis on her identity as a cultural icon vs who she was in private. The commentary centers on her lack of privacy; she's not allowed to have a separate life outside of being a celebrity. Profesor Venomous' portrait borrows this commentary and applies it to his ongoing struggle with identity. He managed to escape a role that didn't fit his values or personal self-image, but he still felt forced to create and maintain a new identity. There was always some tug of war between his private self and how he wanted to portray his public image. The other example pulled from Sims 2 highlights the difference between Bella Goth as a grand mystery vs the mundane Sim she is when she's actually playable.

Regardless of what someone thinks of the original Warhol Marilyn works, there can be some nugget of intriguing character writing or other commentary when a character is deliberately centered in their own Marilyn-esque portfolio.

HER. The icon, the legend, the witch of the needle. Adra, trans-woman, city elf, much bitch, such stylist. She calls people by titles she invents on the spot based off their personality (which is a thing that cannot be transferred into the english language since titles aren't a thing ;; sigh), she's one that states what's wrong with you right in your face, and she's constantly in pain because of her job - one day is her back, the other it's the eyes, but somehow humidity is always involved. She calls herself old but she's not that old, like, she's in her 60s << anyway, she takes advantage of it a lot for her own entertainment. Coming from the Denerim alienage for then moving to Highever, she has had all the experiences one can think of so she appears a bit skeptical when it comes to big scale projects born from righteous ideals. However she seems to believe in the Inquisition. Well, she trusts its leader and her work, but she's a fereldan through and through so she's leaning more on a "I'm gonna judge the overalls when I see the results" attitude. So far, she's satisfied, but she'll never express it. Queen Anora #1 fangirl.

Rhian, daughter of Beathan ...who at the beginning was a Lord of the Rings OC but then she turned into something I'm using for a personal project with a medieval fantasy setting, so now she's running free and untied from a beloved franchise :'D weee There is some bisexual awakening going on but it's actually a story about found family, gender roles, and honesty. I'll get back to it at some point. Hopefully. She's the Mulan of my roster, pretending to be a man to join the local army and having to deal with a big menace while questioning her faith on authority. She's very brave, caustically sarcastic, an average soldier, and has loud opinions that always put her in trouble. Also she's a capricorn, she can open jars and she will let you know until she dies.

Meanest OC:

Lenore fucking Shepard WHO WOULD HAVE GUESSED LMAO She's manipulative, controlling, outright nasty towards pyjaks, and would 100% push you towards the zombie horde as bait if that means she gets to save herself plus her squad. She does have a few reedeeming qualities but it's not even slightly enough to grant her a "maybe she's good on the inside" consolation prize. To be fair, she's the most emotional character of the bunch, super sensitive towards children and people that can't fight for themselves. The ones she likes, yeah, but still! Hands down my favorite store on the Citadel <3

Absolutely him. Mr. Rivelli. Wiccan, chemistry genius, chainsmoker, incapable of interfacing himself emotionally with those surrounding him. He's quite the introvert, but he daydreams like a pro and he's very passionated about his interests. He can't look at people in the eye, but he's the most loving and communicative plant dad one could think of <3 He's a soft boy, he just has a lonely nature. He's part of a project called "The Wedding Planner", it's a boy meets boy story, both of the main characters are in their thirties and there's a "what am I doing with my life" type of approach to the plot. It's a 30 years old / mid life crisis type of story, basically, with a wedding. The wedding is important. Very. It makes it cheesy. We worship cheese in this household.

Most Aloof/Standoffish OC:

Absolutely him, and it's a coping mechanism. Castor "Cass" Actius never shows emotions because he bottles all them up. And it's a long bottle - he's very tall. I was torn between soft and aloof in this case, but he's definitely one that acts like he's the calmest but in truth he's screaming internally all the time. Probably one of the characters I can relate to the most lol He's all legs and sugars, has a thing for tea, he's the fourth of four siblings and probably the most well adjusted out of them - which says a lot about the state of his family considering he's clinically depressed and an addict << He's a great leader, calm and detached, also he doesn't seem very approachable at first. At second as well, and at third, and at... But he's a cool person with big mom energy. If you're under his command, prepare to be scolded frequently, but also to be defended strenuosly in front of his superiors because you're perfect and you did nothing wrong, never in your life!! Best baker of the bunch, sorry Hawke.

Although I'm talking about that kind of stupidity that makes you look like a fool during situations that require a little bit of foresight or planning. She basically winged some of the most important decisions during the Blight, the others were taken because of her strong sense of honor and justice, but like You can't apply that all the time and then go surprised pikachu face when people call you out for being impulsive.

Smartest OC:

Him. Hands down. Serge "Twinkles" R'lyeh. He's MacGyver with the sensitivity of Tori Amos, also he's your therapist and your sugar daddy at the same time. He's an aerospace engineer turned infiltrator turned spy turned college teacher turned practical fx specialist turned distinguished officer during the war turned loving husband and best uncle... Like, there's so much to him! He lived a tons of lifetimes at once because he's talented brilliant incredible amazing showsto-- Probably the second favorite, because he seems like he's perfect but he has a problem taking responsibilities. He's also very childish, egocentric, he second guesses you as if it was a competitive sport when it comes to things he can do better, and his mouth is the envy of every sailor from here to the Attican Traverse - because he swears a lot but also for the other reason *cough* I kinda loved having to deal with someone that was on top of many skills, it made so much room for planning a big downfall <3 oh, and he fell. Hard. I'm gonna stop but know that I would keep writing about him for other 30-40 paragraphs, gushing and blabbering incoherently because he's my special self absorbed space kitty, trust me on that. Twilight Defense: Essay

Twilight (2008) : Vampire Media at its Finest 

  “I've never given much thought as to how I would die, But dying in the place of someone I love seems like a good way to go” is the iconic opening line of the 2008 film Twilight directed by Catherine Hardwicke, and based off of the novel Twilight (2005) by Stephanie Meyer. Twilight as an adaption of the book, took a gritty, indie film approach, with a low budget. The director Hardwicke is known for her dark, and realistic coming of age movies like Thirteen (2003), and Lords of Dogtown (2005). At the time of the first film the book series was already quite popular, and the casting of soon to be heartthrobs Robert Pattison as Edward Cullen, and Taylor Lautner as Jacob Black just increased this popularity- of course, mostly with the stereotypical audience of teen girls. Due to a number of things, such as the author Stephanie Meyers Mormon background, the film series having an increasingly blockbuster quality, and the series’ overall difference to prior vampire media, Twilight soon became a film reduced to a meme or something that teen girls love, and women who used to be teen girls refer to as a “guilty pleasure”. 

     Twilight is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I do not feel it necessary to justify my love for it on account of it being a “guilty pleasure” or something that I recognize the “corniness of”. When it comes to Twilight, the costuming, cinematography and its faith to the novel are some qualities that I not only think make it a good film, but more specifically a good vampire film, especially due to the unique concept of vampirism it brought to the genre.

     Twilight is about a seventeen year old girl named Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) who falls in love with a vampire: Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). Edward is different from your typical vampire: not only is he an immortal teenager (permanently seventeen), but he also lives his life, along with his vampire family, posing as normal highschoolers. The Cullens are also “vegetarians”: they do not consume human blood at all,  instead only drinking from the blood of animals. Bella and Edward soon after meeting, fall in love and of course- because he is a vampire and she is a human- they face many obstacles. The film is also incredibly faithful and accurate to the book, only taking few and mostly unnoticeable differences, which also adds to its overall quality. 

   Acting wise, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattison were incredibly well casted. There are many critiques of Kristen Stewart's acting in this film (mostly by people on Reddit, or in Tik Tok comment sections)- but she perfectly depicts the character of Bella who is awkward, clumsy and unsure. In a clip such as the infamous ketchup scene, where Bella is eating at a diner with her father Charlie, shortly after her arrival to Forks,Washington, she awkwardly shakes ketchup onto her fries. This scene soon became a critique of the film, because it seems like no ketchup comes out of the bottle Bella is shaking, but if you pay close attention to the shot, there is in fact, ketchup coming out onto her fries. Scenes like this, which are used to frame the movie as “corny” or to target Kristen Stewart for being “cringe” are simply characterizations of Bella– who is meant to be an unsure, unconfident and normal teenage girl. I think anyone who has been seventeen can attest to the sometimes painfully awkward behavior, especially when you are a seventeen year old in love. 

    Successful attributes of Twilight also include the costuming, which is unapologetically early 2000’s, with a sense of timelessness to the vampire outfits. Bella Swan is typically seen with flare low-rise skinny jeans, long sleeve Henley tops, flannels, and button down sweaters- all in neutral earth tones. Her outfits, while being trendy for the time (2008), are also reminiscent of her characterization- literally just a regular teen girl. The character of Alice Cullen’s (Edward’s vampire “sister”) outfits are more stylish and chic: she is seen with a ribbon choker featuring the Cullen family crest (something all the Cullen family members wear, and a very helpful edition from Hardwicke, as it creates unity and connection physically between the family), and babydoll dresses or button down vests. Alice by far has the most interesting outfits, which makes sense, because she is characterized as loving fashion: picking out Bella’s prom dress near the end of the film. All of the characters are costumed distinctively, which makes for incredibly well done costuming throughout the film. 

   The cinematography and visuals are extremely beautiful and a success in the film to remark as well. The movie is shot noticeably with a lack of CGI (it is only used in one scene), which adds to the gritty, indie aspect of the film. The Cullens do not have noticeable fangs, and have realistically pale skin. The movie was also shot seemingly mostly using a handheld camera (a trademark by Hardwicke, consistently used in all of her films) - with the camera sometimes in a point of view shot from Edward or Bella’s perspective, or zooming in on their eyes or faces , and sometimes exhibiting an unstable, shaky quality- which adds to the overall feeling that the vampires in Twilight very well could exist in the modern world as we know it. The film takes place in Forks,Washington - referred to by Edward Cullen as the “wettest place in the continental US” and the lush green forest often focused on throughout the film portrays the beautiful Washington coastline, that just adds to the blue, hazy, melodramatic aesthetic of the film. Another aesthetic aspect is the very specific and well known cool blue-green hue, which not only  emphasizes the vampires themselves, but also the general dreariness of the film as a whole. Some of these aspects of Twilight also make it a very different film within the vampire genre, with many examples of Camp within it as well.

   Camp is a term pretty loosely used- sometimes by people improperly, for anything a bit off the wall or seen as “corny”- but the real definition is pretty specific. Camp as an adjective is defined most clearly in the Oxford English Dictionary as “Exaggerated, affected, over the top, esp. in a knowing or playful way; (deliberately) not restrained by traditional or prevailing ideas of good taste or decorum. Esp. used with reference to the style or execution of a work of art or entertainment, or a dramatic performance.” (OED).  Using this definition, Twilight exhibits many camp qualities. 

    Edward’s skin glittering in the sun is a complete over the top substitution for the typical turning to dust, or going up in flames reaction to the sun that is typically seen in vampire literature and media- think Interview With The Vampire (1994), when Claudia burns into an ash by exposure from the sun, or Nosferatu (1922) when Count Orlok simply disappears into a puff of smoke upon exposure to the rising sun. Both Catherine Hardwicke, and Stephanie Meyer are aware of this classic vampire rule, as there is an incredibly detailed scene in which Bella does extensive research on vampire lore and folktales. But, the choice to include this incredibly glamorous, ridiculous version of a vampire's reaction to this sun is deliberate and the result is incredibly iconic and campy. As Susan Sontag explains in the essay “Notes on Camp”, one aspect of the camp aesthetic is “the attempt to do something extraordinary. But, extraordinary in the sense, often, of being special, glamorous.”. While other vampire portrayals may not feature a different reaction to the sunlight besides burning into dust (like the Blade films, where vampires are weakened by the sun, and vampires have varying tolerances for sunlight, or in Vampire Academy where certain types of vampires will only be tired by the sun) only Twilight has done the alternate interpretation of vampires glittering in the sun- which is incredibly special, and glamorous. Some other hints of camp throughout the film have to do with the setting. The blue tint that is prominent, as well as the overall emphasis on scenery, is incredibly exaggerated and playful. The plot of Twilight itself is inherently unserious and exaggerated as well- a human falling in love with a completely harmless vampire. Sontag makes note of this absurdity being an essential part of camp : “ The whole point of Camp is to dethrone the serious. Camp is playful, antiserious….. One can be serious about the frivolous, frivolous about the serious.” In other ways though, besides the camp aesthetic, Twilight is very unique within the vampire genre. 

   Twilight is one of the first examples of the placement of vampires in highschool. Even crazier than that is the fact that Edward Cullen’s vampire father works as a doctor.  The choice to place The Cullens in an infinite loop of attending highschool, then college, just to repeat it again is something only Twilight has done. Even media that followed it, such as The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017) where vampires attended highschool, it was done with specific intent- not just for the sake of eternal education. Even earlier vampire media featuring young vampires like The Lost Boys (1987) or Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) never made these vampires attend school- because honestly, if you are immortal, why would you spend your entire life attending highschool? Another way in which Twilight differs from the typical vampire mold is the complete lack of sensuality. Because of Stephanie Meyer’s Mormon background, I do not think it is likely that this choice is a campy one- however it is still incredibly different from literally every other film or television show within the genre.Vampires are usually portrayed as sensual monsters, utilizing seduction on their victims. Films like: Interview with the Vampire, or another Anne Rice based work Queen of the Damned (2002), Vamp (1986), Vampyres (1974) are a few examples of this typical idea. The choice to make Edward Cullen a 104 year old virgin goes against the usual qualities of vampires completely. It works though, and a big part of this is the fact that Edward Cullen and Bella Swan are only seventeen years old. To make Edward a typical sexually active vampire would be pretty creepy. While plenty of other films and television shows portray teen sex, it is not the most digestible or necessary thing and plus, Edward being a (potential) killing machine definitely adds a power dynamic at play that would not make the sensual vampire idea super ethical. 

   Twilight’s commercial success is truly undeniable, but for a lot of people I think it's worth as a film is not as apparent. From the first time I watched the film at age 9, I have always seen its value. While I may not have critically thought about Twilight when I first watched it, and was only thinking about how much I loved Edward Cullen- I think that opinion is still as valuable as mine now, which argues that Twilight is much more than that. At its core, I think a lot of the backlash that Twilight faces is due to misogyny, and the unserious way in which the general public views media that's main demographic is women. I hope that Twilight might receive some of the respect that it deserves, because there is more to it than two hot guys and some glitter.
