we srsly need more stories with idealized versions of characters that other characters have sort of made up but NOT in the joke way where its like “haha you thought they were gonna be cool but they’re lame” or “you thought they were good but they’re evil” i mean just subtle stuff where the average person might not even REALIZED those biased views of that character ARE biased

#again omori im talking about omori #specifically with basil just cause hes the most obvious considering he LITERALLY gets split into two different characters due to sunny not #being able to reconcile his good and bad traits. basil is very complicated and flawed individual but sunny needs him to be either best #friend who can do no wrong or evil monster who does terrible things #he cant accept that basil can be both his friend who is sweet and kind and likes plants and books and things #and also the boy who helped frame his sister's death as a suicide #so every negative aspect of basil is shoved onto stranger and banished to black space #whilst headspace basil is perfect and shy/anxious in a palatable cute way and not in an ugly damaging way and needs to be rescued #urughrugrghhr its SOOOOOOO good its so fucking fascinating i cant stop thinking about it
Talking a bit about your tags; I agree that the situation with Headspace Basil and Stranger is so interesting and it's very much worthy of discussion.
You know, for my point of view I don't think the seperation is exactly Headspace Basil has the good traits and Stranger has just the bad traits. It's a bit more complicated than that I believe.
Headspace Basil is kept as a nice, innocent person who will take what everyone says into account. The fact that he needs saving connects very well with Sunny's guilt which then also connects with the creation of Stranger. Sunny subconsciously feels guilty about leaving Basil the way he did, and knows he must be suffering, so in this world he creates a way to be able to "save him", since Sunny is absolutely terrified of confronting the situation in real life.
Stranger, besides having traits that perhaps are less desirable or scare Sunny, seems to be embodying the truth and the reality Sunny can't face. Stranger is brutally honest, and Stranger doesn't say "It's fine Omori!". Stranger is the real fear, put into words, that Basil resents Sunny for leaving. Stranger is the cold hard truth of saying "you need to get out of this fake world and face the truth so you can help us both" which is not a bad thing, it's a good thing in fact. It's just that Sunny doesn't want to hear it. Stranger will say "We can deal with this together (in real life)" and by gods does Sunny want to, he created a whole situation where he can save Basil and they can finally be happy, but Sunny's too scared, so he banishes the part of Basil that is calling for help and for Sunny to actually face reality and do something.
So what's left is a doll that can only be perfect, always considerate, always reassuring, always with a smile on his face.
But even this doll can't stay like that forever because in the end Sunny knows that's not how it goes. This doll will find the truth and when Omori finds him again he's still nice, always caring, but he's talking about summer vacations... Things that have happened in real life.
And then Basil is asking if they can talk about something...
And Omori knows that the something Basil wants to talk about is something Sunny doesn't want to acknowledge.
So Omori does what Omori does, mutilates Basil silences Basil so he can't say a thing. He can't have these two realities of Basil to mix. Omori will restart the headspace over and over again so he can have Basil be the oblivious and cute flower boy and stop Sunny from acknowledging the truth.
But in the Sunny route it's too late for Omori. Sunny has gone outside and met his IRL friends, including Basil, and there's no way of stopping the train coming at great speed directly towards you.
