Maybe people need to think about it like a CD then since you (the royal you, by the way) still kind of sound like you're expecting to love every single part of it, and tbh, that's almost always gonna set someone up for failure.
If you buy a CD with 13 songs on it, and you fucking LOVE 7 of them but the other 6 are either kind of middle of the road for you or just not your thing, are you gonna throw that CD in the garbage?
No, you're not. Because it's absolutely fine to have something you don't love every single second of. I don't know a single person who is a fan of something who loves every single moment of something, because there is ALWAYS going to be a moment in a movie/show/play/album/etc that isn't 100% for you.
Every single favorite thing I have, there are also parts of it that I'm not super into because that's just how life kinda works and expecting every single second of basically anything to be perfectly up to your standards is basically ruining the way so many people interact with media.
I also really feel the need to point out that apart from scheduling conflicts, it takes SO much work to write a variety show, especially one that stays pretty damn up to date on what's going on in the world. If it was every week, everyone would be burnt out as hell in just a few months. (There's a reason SNL writer rooms used to be absolutely full of drugs like cocaine and it wasn't just because they were having fun. It's because it's draining, stressful, time consuming, and hard to keep up with)
Like, at this point a ton of you guys are just reminding me of the execs on streaming platforms nowadays. Ope, this didn't get the trillion views we wanted so we're pulling the entire thing and not finishing it. Bye! and it sucks.
Having lurked a lot longer than I have interacted, I would put money on yall eating up every single part of this show if it always had Ian and Anthony in it because yall still hold everyone else to a different standard than you do those two, and it's legitimately just unfair as hell to all of the other people involved in smosh. someone makes one bit that doesn't hit the way it was expected to, and a bunch of people turn on a fucking dime to be like "no she's no longer funny" and I KNOW if ian, anthony, or both wrote it yall would be like "there's always next week!".
(i would also like to remind people that yall are getting this content for free and the entitlement that's still rolling off of tons and tons and TONS of people makes me want to scream. if it's not for you, move on from it and stop being an ass in regards to it.)
it also very much seems like a decent handful of people wrote off BC from the beginning and are just going into it now with pure "this is gonna suck huh" mentality just to find something to bitch about, and i cannot recall off the top of my head a single ask or post criticizing any of the men involved in BC—it is the women who get targeted for why it sucks, mainly erin and angela, despite the fact that there are also a ton of other people involved in writing and how stuff is put together, and i know there are several people with askboxes that get FILLED with misogynistic bullshit about the women of smosh. a lot of the hate i see for BC feels like a carry over of the garbage that already gets said about the girls.
a fuckton of people are blinded by nostalgia glasses, and as someone without them, that's incredibly obvious. but when you can't see the forest for the trees, a lot of the time you don't notice you're doing it. so i'm pointing it out, because it needs to be said.
I'm not a big sketch comedy person, but I'm going into these excited to see what creativity has been given a chance to shine, even if it's not something i personally find hilarious. more people need to go into this (and literally anything) with that mindset because when you approach everything with an immediately critical eye, the enjoyment is sucked out of it.
My biggest gripe rn is that the Fandom at large seems to have decided that something that doesn't even have six episodes yet is shit, especially something that is a totally new format. With comedy, ups and downs are a given as you figure out what works.
There are tons of sketches that didn't hit great for a lot of people but all sketches didn't get written off because of it.
BC is a variety show, which means it's supposed to appeal to different people in different parts. It feels like people are forgetting that part. With most variety shows, there are parts people won't enjoy that others do.
It feels like this is part of the wider issue nowadays of people expecting everything to be pretty much tailored to them so if there is one thing out of the six in the episode that they don't like, they blanket decide the whole thing is garbage.
That's fair, but even when considering how Bit City is new and is a variety show sometimes the episodes just don't hit very well even if there is one appealing or funny bit in it.
I did get a reply on a different post that said if Bit City was weekly it might change how much it's criticized and I think that makes a lot of sense. When something is weekly it isn't so bad if one episode sort of bombs for you because another will come next week, but every two weeks you're waiting for it and then it feels like a let down.
