I just know he was thinking about putting that bell in his hand as soon as he started sharing how he wished that he'd told Falin how much she meant to him sooner but was trying to think of the right moment. He was absolutely BESIEGED by the autistic swagger of the Touden siblings. How can you not start scratching the furniture thinking about it

G'day, I hope you are doing well.

Ever since I finished the story of Dungeon Meshi (all supplementary material included) I've been writing down bullet points on characters in addition to in-depth synopses as a way to tidy up my rather busy mind. To this end I've also greatly enjoyed reading other folks' interpretations of particular characters, as it gives me further insight into aspects of that character I may have glossed over.

However, there's one character I'm struggling to write a cohesive synopsis about, that being none other than 'miss enigma' herself, Falin Touden. I get that her whole shtick is that she's kind of a mystery, but I find myself drawing a lot of blanks when it comes to her as a character, and while I have nailed down some important bullet points, there are a lot of different interpretations on her, all of which starkly contrast one another. Though perhaps it's just the wording. Hard to say.

It could very well be that I'm being too dense i.e. perceiving "Falin is willing to risk killing others to save her friends." and "Falin, in the heat of the moment, when faced with certain death, was willing to face the prospect of harming potential passersby in a final Hail Mary to get her friends to safety." as entirely different observations. I have a hard time with those kinds of things.

With this being a hub for all sorts of observations, interpretations and cool trivia, I was wondering if you'd perhaps be willing to share how you yourself perceive Falin as a character, so I can compare notes and perhaps gain a more proper understanding of her as a character as a result. I know this question is very broad and kind of vague, but if you could spare the time I'd be most grateful.

Hello!!! I love Falin!!!!!

She *is* a mystery, we mostly know Falin through the perception other characters have of her instead of a direct deep look onto who she is, which I find very interesting. I think the best post I've seen about her (which as usual I can't remember where edit: someone linked it thank uu) I think called her perceived altruism/love "selfish" and I've been thinking about that ever since.

In that sense the way she cares so much about the comfort of people around her might be a way to keep *her own* comfort because she doesn't want to see other people suffer.

This girly died and came back to life from bones and the first thoughts she has is that she caused trouble for her loved ones

She probably has felt this way since she was a child, "because of her" that her family was torn apart "because of her" that Laios left, her mom was sick, her father had to send her away. (wasn't actually her fault but she might think it is)

I imagine ever since then Falin has done her best to not cause trouble and to make the people she loves happy, everything we know about her and the things she was doing was always for the people she loved, that's why I enjoy the post canon comic where Toshiro asks her hand in marriage again so much. The first time she considers accepting just because "might as well" while for the second time she finally wants to live for herself.

I think Falin herself has lost who she "really is" by trying to accommodate everyone around her and that's probably part of why we ourselves don't really know her, so much so that the most cynical character is uncomfortable around her (probably cause he notices Falin is "hiding" something)

I think Falin is quite the melancholic character to be honest, someone who has lost herself in self sacrifice and who is only now learning how to live for herself doing what she wants.

Both the teleportation scene and the bit about healing show "cracks" in the selfless front she puts out tbh. By context I don't think what she did was only due to "desperation of the moment" she says out loud "Even if I end up hurting others I want you and my brother to live on". She weighted out how much suffering she might cause and decided she wanted to save them anyway, and I'm sure in that calculation she knew that they would suffer because of her sacrifice too.

Falin is saving them for herself, I'm not great with words so this is all over the place and maybe sounds a little negative about Falin but the thing is, you cannot live your life for other people, you can't sacrifice yourself for other people's happiness, you shouldn't erase your own presence so others are happier and I think Falin is starting to learn that by the end.

I'd probably keep rambling without getting anywhere and missing a lot of more meaningful moments but I'll stop here, if anyone has recs for Falin analysis please share!

Ok, my long delayed post about Kabru and the Winged Lion. This does not end here, I'm adding more in a reblog.

Heavy on spoilers. Taking the extra material from @dunmeshistash who I apologise to as usual

Let's start here:

Two important takeaways here:

1) Kabru's hatred of monsters is caused not just by the Utaya catastrophe, but also from the fact that even before that, his unusual eye color was connected to monsters in local lore, and this led to ostracisation and, we can imagine, violence or at least the threat of violence towards him and his mother, serious enough that she escaped to Utaya, aka the place where the dungeon would kill her.

Kabru crucially does not place the fault for this on his father's family, but on himself for being born with 'monstrous eyes'. This is a normal way of reacting to ostracization in children, interiorising instead of projecting the trauma. It's much easier to imagine a world in which there's actually something wrong with you than one in which others might make you suffer for no reason. Monsters are also much more likely to be offered as an explanation by the adults than the actual more realistic explanations (infidelity or rape), which would not be considered appropriate.

This means that indirectly, child Kabru feels that his own 'monstrosity' is responsible for his mother moving to Utaya to protect him and ultimately dying.

2) in the Dungeon Meshi world there are specifically legends about *demon* succubi and incubi (real world lore says succubi prey on men and incubi on women and I assume that's what Laios is referring to with the distinction, but besides that lets assume theyre one and the same), distinct from the *actual monsters* succubi. The demons and monsters have a similar MO of using a person's desires to capture them, but while monster succubi suck a person's vital force, the demons supposedly use the men for their seed and the women for their womb to reproduce (again, completing dungeon meshi lore with bits of real world lore here). Laios, our local monster expert, thinks those demons are just legend. He tells us there are monsters that do use people as incubators for their eggs but I highly doubt that's Kabru's case, uncanny resemblance to a wasp notwithstanding (Laios...)

From here we go to:

This is where the tumblr search function spat in my face and ran away with the rest of my references while giggling. Oh well.

It's noted over and over in canon and extra material that Kabru is charming. More than that: Kabru *will do anything to get someone to like him*.

Worth noting that Daya and Holm *like* Kabru. This is not them disparaging an acquaintance, this is them levelling a criticism at a good friend, a criticism that seems to have been levelled at him before even ("it's no surprise...").

So, important takeaway: Kabru isn't just charming in general, he VERY SPECIFICALLY makes an effort to be charming. He needs people to like him, to trust him, and in order to obtain this, he's willing to lie and pretend.

Like with the Canaries: he needs them to trust him so they will keep him privy to their plans. So he plays up the poor innocent baby orphan angle:

And with Laios? The what (pretending to like monsters) we know, but why?

Kabru thinks Laios is the only one who can conquer the dungeon without the elves or the dwarves intervening and taking control. He is however very worried about his motivation. He wants to know why Laios is going so deep into the dungeon - beyond wanting to save his sister. What motivates him? Can he be trusted?

In the Toshiro chapters we find out that he has been trying to get in contact with him for weeks, possibly months, but this is the first time he has had a real possibility to meet him, and in order to make sure to leave a positive memory and possibly be an influence in the future, he pretends to be aligned with Laios' as much as possible, including hiding his hatred of monsters. I have written tons on this that has now been lost to tumblr like tears in the rain, but: I do not joke when I say that I think Kabru is flirting with Laios before and after the harpy egg incident. Let's be clear: Kabru's intentions are not romantic at this point. But he has noticed how lovestruck Laios was with Toshiro before their confrontation, and he's thinking, well, if I can get him to develop a similar crush on me, I can probably get him to listen to me more easily. Like I can mince words and put things in scary quotes but that's straight up what's happening. Kabru is trying to establish a close bond that wasn't there before: it might not be necessarily sexual, but it's definitely a type of seduction.

It kinda works.

No matter how far Laios runs, he cannot escape other people trying to tell him how to live his life. Poor guy. But at the same time...

Is this real? Or a red herring?

Laios' father and mother seemed to be living relatively pious lives. They clearly had a good house, but it didn't seem like they were extremely rich. Then again, perhaps he's just a cousin of royalty? Is that why his parents wanted him to have children?

They want to.... halt the growth of the dungeon? Is this another part of the natural ecosystem of things? Dungeons growing seems to point even more towards the idea that it's a gigantic, fleshpit-like creature instead of simply a construct.

Then again, constructs CAN be creatures. Like the golems.

Elves not understanding how old humans are continues to be hilarious because like.

As humans, we HAVE this same concept of variant aging. Like. Dogs. We understand that dogs live less than us, and mature a lot slower. But this is.... COMMON KNOWLEDGE. Most people do not make it into adulthood without understanding that dogs mature within 1-2 years of their birth.

The fact that elves, a species with FAR more time on their hands, who have lived alongside other races for AGES....... have STILL not got the general concept of aging down....means their education is atrocious. Or they're all not paying attention.

.......this. THIS is the most fascinating concept in this chapter.

The fallen.... turned into MONSTERS.

We know that dying inside the dungeon doesn't mean permanent death. But dying above-ground does.

He's really conflicted at first.

He goes to Rangiku for advice because he doesn't want you to think that he's mad at you or trying to control you.

Toshiro will ask to see you in his office and confronts you about it.

He's soft spoken and kind about the whole situation, hands cradling your face the entire time and making sure you're listening to every word he says.

Toshiro honestly just really cares about you and he'll admit it to your face.

He might have Rangiku there standing in the corner for moral support just in case.

Byakuya:

When he approaches you to stop smoking, he definitely comes off as really mean and rude about it.

Saying things like, "how could you?" or "This is such a disgusting thing to do, y/n."

Byakuya is just really concerned for your health, especially because he doesn't want to lose you like he lost Hisana.

He's very blunt and kind of harsh about it, but he's scared to death of losing you.

Byakuya might get emotional about it, but he'll still speak with a bitter and harsh tone to you.

But behind his bitter voice, you can hear how much he really cares about you.

Once he realizes how mean he is being, he'll lower his voice and cup your face.

Byakuya is def a tear jerker.

Jushiro:

My poor man would be so concerned for your health and lungs.

Seeing as how Jushiro is already suffering with health issues, I feel like it would be hard for you to continue smoking.

Honestly, I see can see Jushiro being really upset about the fact that you do smoke.

He would sit you down for tea and be gentle and caring with his words.

Jushiro, my poor baby, honestly might start crying because he's really scared to lose you to smoking.

You better be sympathetic and grab this man's hand, squeezing it reassuringly and promising to stop smoking for him.

Ichigo:

The lengths this boy would go to stop you smoking...unbelievable.

He acts really annoyed when you smoke in front of him, he'll make a remark and roll his eyes.

On the surface, Ichigo is annoyed that you do smoke, but deep down, he's actually really upset.

He'll grab whatever you smoke with out of your hand and toss it yards away.

You'll probably get into silly little yelling matches where Ichigo will flick your forehead.

It takes him a while to admit that he actually wants you to stop smoking, he'll always joke and remark about it.

He'll pull you into bedroom and he really struggles with his feelings and admitting them.

He'll probably say something along the lines of, "Y/n, you know how much I care about you and this is really hard for me to say..."

Ichigo takes like a whole hour to admit that he wants you to stop smoking and you start laughing because of how much he was stuttering throughout the whole thing.

Otherwise, he's very sweet and flustered during the whole thing.

Dungeon Meshi Liveblog: Endgame...

I have no real notes on the 'escape from the dungeon' sequence, other than that it IS going to be fun to have an epic 'galloping away from total urban collapse/tidal wave' sequence in the anime.

This is technically accurate-ish but also totally not, nobody but Laios (and we the reader) knows what happened in that final confrontation, and I wonder if he'll tell them? He has no reason not to, other than it being...deeply Weird(TM) in the way that only Laios really is.

Namari expresses many feelings, including love, through violence, and I respect and appreciate that.

I tagged this before, but: future royal advisors lmaoooo. (I know Shuro has his own princedom to rule, but not yet, okay, and even once he inherits, lbr every time he visits Melini for diplomatic reasons, Laios is going to be like, "Shuro!! :D Come to dinner! I really like how the orcs aren't offering Laios kingship so much as sanctuary. The underground here is theirs, because nobody else ever wanted it, just like nobody ever wanted them. If Laios is going to be arrested by elves if he stays above ground, and Pattadol and Flamela with their oh-so-polite and flattering invitations trying to do, then he's an orc in all but name and form, and he's welcome among them for the rest of his life.

I just love love love the 'all the random disparate allies you made along the way rally together at the end for an epic battle to defeat the big bad" - except the big bad is already defeated. USUALLY the way that works is:

Core hero party faces pre-plot climax interparty conflict, then resolves it

Rally disparate allies made throughout the journey to fight the Big Bad (note: allies may rally themselves; still counts)

Fight Big Bad first as a group, then winnow/isolate down to core party, then down to single Main Protagonist who faces and defeats the Big Bad in a character foil-heavy, extremely thematic final confrontation

Everyone lives happily ever after, the end!

In Dungeon Meshi, however, it was:

Disparate allies made throughout the journey rally together to...help the core hero party deal with their pre-climactic interparty conflict! (Marcille's monster army - which does still come down to the core party, of course)

Core party, then isolated to single Main Protagonist (Laios) faces and defeats the Big Bad in a character foil-heavy, extremely thematic final confrontation

Rally disparate allies to accomplish what Laios explicitly says was the TRUE goal all along: reviving Falin! (Via eating as a group because that's live! understanding! connection! life!!)

Everyone lives happily with continuous hunger, because that's what it means to live ever after, the end!

I JUST THINK IT'S NEAT

It is sooo notable, though by this point unsurprising, that the elves' chief consideration of the consequences of all of this is that "things" (magic, international politics, etc) may end up "harder to keep under control."

My personal theory/headcanon-until-proven-otherwise is that mana levels above-ground will simply never fully subside to their dungeon-era levels again, and dungeon mana levels will be correspondingly lower - it'll all even out, basically, though underground will still have generally higher levels. This means:

there will be more monsters on the surface, especially large ones

magic will be easier for all races (though limits on how much they can hold at once will remain)

"dark" ancient magic, which (I headcanon) is particularly defined by an assumption that there is a Shit Ton of mana to draw on, will become easier and thus more common...which is okay because "need huge power source to draw on" is no longer the first step on a slippery slope to "let dungeon demon consume the world."

corollary: Marcille is going to live her best damn life studying and innovating with the above

It's so great and interesting how much the Canaries care about Mithrun! It'd be so easy for him to just be their royally-imposed boss, or their weird mascot that they have to take care of, and both of these things are part of the dynamic. But they also all care about him as a person! Fleki was smothering him like a doll a minute ago, but the instant there's real hope for his life, she's jumping on it breathlessly! They're all suggesting hobbies he could take up, and standing around rapt and breathless waiting to see if Kabru's speech works to get him back on his feet!

There's definitely parallels to be made with Laios here, in terms of adventurin party rolling their eyes affectionately at their leader and saying, "yeah, we WOULD follow this total freak into hell. That's our day job, actually. #onlysomeregrets".

I just wanna see this panel in color SO BAD, though. The green grass, the pale brown earth and the paler birch trees, and the semi-translucent ice fracturing the dark red dragon meat, with Mithrun's pooling green cloak and these 2 guys standing amids all of it... It's going to be so striking.

I've decided that the one (1) headcanon I'm holding in total defiance of explicit canon is that TO ME, Yaad was the original concept art where's she's a fairy princess in aesthetic, the perfect princess-in-the-tower for a brave knight to rescue and so earn the right to kingship of the land.

She still ends up possessing her grandfather's body, to be clear, and having this and every other conversation. It just intensifies the "I survived 1,000 years of being a ghost by focussing all my hope on THIS TROPE and you are going to play it out!!" Sure, marriage isn't an option anymore but that's fine, that wasn't the most important part! If Laios doesn't know how to govern, then she (in her grandfather's body) will teach him! Or else!!!

TLDR Yaad's gender is Princess and I will not be taking counterargument unless it's very compelling.

This really is a fun little chapter, with Izutsumi's struggle to figure out what to do next mirroring Laios's. She's wandering freely, insisting on her own freedom - and nobody is arguing with her! Everyone takes it for granted, so much that she feels a little unwanted! While every conversation she walks into involves responsibilities to others.

Saw ur Toshiro post, and I absolutely agree that Toshiro's outburst will be a stepping stone for both um an Laios to grow and that the buildup was because Shuro didn't want to ruin situation he was still trying to figure out. But the funniest thing is, afaik, Laios and Falin are *also Foreigners* for quite far away. Their country is simply Scandinavian/northern Europe themed. I don't think we see any long-lived races in their flash backs (baring the dead man buying a ring of elves?). And both Falin and Laois definitly are the equivalent of nobility/Local chiefs kids. But instead of being send out with all their assistants and guards, Laios ran away and suffered in the army and then on his own in a caravan , and Falin was send to a Magial School full of other races and people. They both had time to 'adjust' to the wider world (and still carry a bit of home-grown uh...prejudice (mountain people)). So when they met Shuro both of them were well used to meeting people not from their Country. Toshiro not being either from the tiny Island or the nearby lands simply didn't mesh with how they had adapted to behave. Plus, obviously, Laios textual Autism. But I feel like Laios could totally have figured it out if he had met people from Shuros island before who would have told him, he does after all know how to behave around Dwarves and such, who also have quite diffrent culturual norms. Hi hi! I’m really glad you’re adding onto my silly brain thoughts hehe - I’m super happy to hear yours, especially since they make me think more! Warning this is going to be long, talking about dungeon meshi is just a lot of fun.

When I said foreigner, I should have clarified that that I meant he’s a stranger to the CULTURE. A good chunk of the people in the island are not native to it! But culturally, they have the social background to fit in. They didn’t all come from the same place, yes, but they grew up in European-esque cultures and interacted to some extent with other races. Even Kabru and Rin are not foreign to this type of culture because they grew up with Western/European socialization.

Gonna elaborate bc I think it’s fascinating: From what we know about the Eastern islands, the worldview is very very different. In the Adventurer’s Bible where Kabru talks to Hien, they talk about how the East defines “humans” as “tallmen”, and oni/ogres were the only “other”. In the post-canon snippet where Toshiro talks to Falin, he even refers to Eastern thinking as “backward” due to the lack of long-lived races. Because of his delayed exposure to other races, and because the worldview is far more different than the one the Toudens experienced, that’s where I make the statement that he had more to adjust to.

I’ll also note, the fact that the Toudens are subjectively more adjusted to seeing and accommodating other races makes Laios’ statement that Toshiro “had an odd appearance” an even more bizarre thing to say. And although we can assume Toshiro also has his biases, we don’t see them highlighted like other characters have had (to my knowledge). So it makes it seem like he was more thoughtful/careful towards other races from the get-go, despite his lack of knowledge. His main issues were always with other tallmen, just like Laios.

It’s good to point out that the Toudens are outcasts in their own right. Both of them went through a really hard time, and it changed them. Laios’ cycle of failures and giving up and being bullied are especially important to characterizing his relationship with his sister and his disinterest in humanity and lack of close friends. Falin at least had Marcille. Both Laios and Toshiro have reasons they’re inexperienced in friendship, but one of them stated it in the story and the other didn’t. There’s more misconception about Toshiro’s character than Laios’. So my post was to talk about that one a bit.

ALSO OOO I COMPLETELY FORGOT but I WAS going to mention how both the Toudens and Toshiro came from families of influence! Thank you for bringing it up! Laios and Toshiro diverge from that upbringing, while making Toshiro and Falin a little more similar. This goes into another whole thing where Laios and Toshiro parallel (and foils?) each other but that’s too long of a discussion. Just as long is how this divergence distinguishes the Touden siblings (too many people have said their only difference is gender..)

Lastly, yes, Laios does need more exposure to Eastern people and Eastern culture to get a grasp on it. He really wants to learn! It’s just that Shuro isn’t his encyclopedia and until he gets that chance, he will make ignorant takes. I can think of two more that will occur in the main narrative alone. (but like Toshiro said, Laios has no malicious intent, that’s what makes it all the more complicated)

While there’s good conversation to be had about the fight from a ND vs NT POV, I’ve seen SO much discussion about Toshiro possibly being read as autistic too, and neurodivergent individuals who can relate to his experience. Often it comes as an intersection between both being autistic and being a poc. I think it brings even more nuance to the narrative. Plus I’m just glad there’s people who can relate to him. He’s meant to be relatable! His problem with Laios is just as much a character flaw as it is human.

Two Weeks of Hitsuhina 2024 - Day 11: I’ll Carry You / Fashion

Rating: Teen/T for mild violence and mentions of injuries

Setting: starts in their childhood and goes through to Thousand Year Blood War arc

Synopsis: three instances of them carry one another, and one of them carrying each other.

AN: this ended up being multiple ideas that I came up with for this theme but didn’t take off into a full blown story so I just smacked them together and called it a day. A two notes before we begin:

The rats Hitsugaya mentions are the Ryukyu long-tailed giant rat. It’s a rodent native to Japan, specifically the Ryukyu Islands and it has long hairs that look like spikes. He also mentioned them in Returnal: Summer, which isn’t linked to this fic.

I took some liberties with Momo’s condition at the end of the Thousand Year Blood War arc. She’s able to walk without issue it seems in the manga, but here, she was injured at some point before or during Gerard vs the BLEACH Comedy Hour -- Hosted by Byakuya Kuchiki and Toshiro Hitsugaya and Guest Starring Kenpachi.

The ruined shoe bobs against Toshiro’s collarbone with every step he takes. He considers asking Momo to put it away into her sleeve, but then she whimpers for the umpteenth time.

“Does it really hurt that much?” Toshiro asks.

Momo nods into the back of his neck and shoulder. “Y-Yeah.”

Toshiro sighs as he trudges through the foliage, his house coming into sight in the far distance through the thicket. He’s worried, though it comes across as being more irritable.

He glances down at her bare foot again dangling at his side. There’s bruising blooming across her ankle, but at least there’s not cuts. He’s not sure how he would’ve reacted if there’d been blood.

“Baa-chan will fix it.” He isn’t sure that’s true. The old woman had been able to make him feel better whenever he injured himself, whether it was soothing words of comfort or cleaning and dressing a wound. He’d never suffered a sprained an ankle before

She reels back. “I didn’t know what it was, Shiro-chan!”

“Oi! What have I said about that nickname, bed-wetter?”

“I’ve never wet the bed!”

“Yeah, well you could’ve fooled me with how calmly you reacted to the spiky rat.”

She leans back even further. “It has spikes! How else was I --?”

“Hey!” He can feel himself tipping back with her. Before his weight shifts completely to his heels and rounds forward. With a yelp, she smacks into his back and he nearly falls to his knees and lets her topples head over heels. Quick thinking leads him to stepping a foot out, catching himself.

He stays like that for several hartbeats, gasping along with Momo, before he snaps his gaze over his shoulder. “Don’t lean back like that! You’re gonna make us both fall.”

Her eyes widen at his tone. “I’m sorry.” She looks away, ashamed. “I’m really sorry, Shi – Hitsugaya-chan.”

What annoyance had gripped him drains away. He's not used to seeing her like this. Although she's the younger one of the two of them, he's so used to her taking charge and being confident.

He huffs. “Just don’t do it again.” He resets, heft her knees higher before standing. “We’re almost there.”

Her arms are tight around his shoulder and neck when she starts again towards his house. “Thank you.” She lays her chin on his shoulder. “I’m lucky I have you.”

He ignores the fluttering of his heart and blames the way his cheeks heat up on the lack of shades from the sun.

The world comes back to him in streaking colors. Sound is muffled, smell is distant. Breathing is hard. Pain radiates from his torso and the back of his head. There’s a block of black to his left. Has he gone partially blind?

He blinks rapidly, fearfully. Other senses come back first, hitting him like a ball in the chest. The wind passes through his hair and brushes against his uniform. He jostling around, but he can’t do anything to stop it. Something is pressing hard into his arm and the joint between his knee and thigh, forcing him to be pressed up against the black. Something is braced against his back and underneath his knees. There’s a strange taste in mouth, coppery and thick.

Finally his vision clears. He’s rushing through a street, trees and buildings and people all becoming blurs. The black block is actually a Shinigami uniform, it’s coarse material chaffing against his cheek. The final sense to return is sound, and it’s only then he recognises Momo’s voice.

“Stay with me, Shiro-chan!”

He’s never heard her so worried. With a groan and wince, he tips his head upward. She looks ahead, brow pinched painfully into a fearful frown and sweat forming a sheen over her dirt smudged face. Somewhere behind them, a Hollows roars. With a gasp, it comes back to him.

She looks down then. “You’re awake!”

He can only say her name, stunned that she was carrying him away. When had she come to battlefield? Was it going so badly they needed reinforcements?

“I’m taking you to Fourth Division medics! They’re stationed not far from here. Just hold on! I’ve got you!”

He should focus on the pain, but for some reason, he feels indignant. He’s just become a third seat, and of all people, Hinamori is carrying him. It’s not because he looks down on her – far form it, he thinks she’s incredible with how far she has come and what she has achieved – but because it shouldn’t be like this. She shouldn’t have to do this. She wouldn’t have to be this worried. He should be the one carrying her away from danger, protecting her from all threats.

He’s never carried her like this. In some of his worst nightmares he has, where she was so badly injured she couldn’t walk or she wasn’t fast enough outrun a threat he couldn’t kill.

He views holding her like this to be a tool, something he could use to get her to safety, unlike those who depict it as a sweeping, romantic gesture.

He can’t see why it would be the latter, not when she’s like this. Not when their world is breaking apart.

He doesn’t really look where he’s going, half relying on Rangiku to lead the way back to Tenth Division, and half just knowing from his periphery where he is. His gaze remains mostly on her, on the dried blood on her hands in particular. He tries to keep his step quick but light to avoid jostling her around but also get to Tenth Division quickly.

“Sir, are you sure about this?”

He raises his head to his lieutenant, who looks over her shoulder at him.

“Given her wounds, shouldn’t we take her to Fourth?” she asks. “It might be safer for her there too.”

Toshiro had briefly considered it, and there’s voice within him that practically screams it’s where he should take her, but he followed the orders of another. One he’s known for longer, that she can evoke. “Our enemy might have no regard for those in Fourth Division,” he reasons. “If we take her back to ours, at least we can keep an eye on her better and cast our own kido barrier to protect her from intruders.”

It sounds weak even to his ears, and it doesn’t help that his lieutenant’s eyes soften. He can tell she wants to protest, but whether it was because he outranks her or because of sympathy, she doesn’t. “Understood, sir.”

They walk into a courtyard with the next exit they need just ahead. To his left is an alleyway which would take them on a direct path to Fourth Division.

Go! A part of him demands.

He focuses back on Momo. Her head rests on his shoulder, her eyes closed and furrow in her brow. Tobiume is sheathed back at her hip, the hilt also smeared with dried blood. Her wounded hands rest loosely on her abdomen. If he makes a sudden turn or stop, they’ll topple out and dnalge at her sides. The thought of that, for some reason, strikes at his heart

I can’t predict the movements of everyone, he reason, but I at least want to protect her from her enemies.

He passes the turn off to Fourth Division without a second thought.

The ruins loom around them and rubble crumbles beneath their feet. Hinamori bites the inside of her cheek against the sting in her ankle. Of all the injuries she could’ve sustained from this conflict, she never would’ve guessed it’d be a sprained ankle.

Still, she reminds herself sombrely, it could’ve been worse.

Toshiro’s arm around her back reinforces that fact. They’re arm in arm, with him able to walk where she can’t, and she more alert where he was weary. She looks at him. A moment ago, he’d been in his Completed Form, but had changed back. His clothes hang looser off him, and sweat beads on every part of his exposed skin. He glares at the ground, but not from pain she suspects.

She squeezes the wrist she has a hold over her shoulder, getting his attention. “What’s wrong?”

He doesn’t answer right away, and when he does, it comes out as a mutter. “I should be stronger than this.”

Momo shakes her head slowly. “It’s okay.”

“It isn’t. It’s never meant to be like this.”

“Like what?”

“I’m not…you’re supposed…” Toshiro lets out a frustrated sigh. “You’re not supposed to get hurt like this!”

“Well neither are you!”

That stuns both of them to silence. She hadn’t meant to let it slip, but she’d meant it.

She straightens a bit to rigidly, and her lip curls up into a pout. “There, now we’re even.”

He blinks, and at the first burbles of his laughter, she caves too. It's a strange sound to here in such a place, echoing off the debris and across the open air that's thick with the smells of battle.

“What was that?!” he chortles.

“I – I don’t know!” she admits with an embarrassed grin. “I’m a little…tired I guess.” She slumps, her grin lowering into a sad smile. “It’s been a long time since I laughed like that. I must be getting hysterical from everything that’s happened.”

He let’s out a quiet, long breath, a small smile shaping his lips. “It’s over now.”

The sentence suddenly makes her throat tight and her eyes blur with tears. “Y-Yeah.”

“Hinamori?”

She doesn’t try to hide like usual. She looks at him, starring into those bewildered, concerned eyes. “It’s really over, isn’t it?”

He only nods. There’s too many thoughts running through her head; ones of the dead in the Seireitei, others for the destruction of their barracks and the homes of Souls in the Soul Society, and a few for the uncertainty that lies ahead of them. Selfishly perhaps, she chooses to focus on the one that makes her press her forehead into his temple. I still have you.

“Thank goodness,” she marvels. “We're still..."

He lets out a shuddering breath. He’s lost for words for a long while before he lets out a weak chuckle. "Don't go getting emotional on me, Hinamori. We've gotta find the others."

Lots of people talking about the micro aggressions Shuro experienced in Laois’s party but I haven’t seen anybody talk about how he only suffered through those because he had a crush on Falin, Laois’s sister. Marcille is also in Laois’s party mostly because of Falin, and yet she has not gotten into a fist-fight with Laois about any of the things that have bothered her. Marcille actually communicates with Laois very directly about the things she wants, thinks, and dislikes. Marcille isn’t even as upset as Chilchuck when she finds out Laois was being Laois and spilled the beans about the ancient magic. This is something that impacts Marcille so much more than Laois being an annoyance in regards to Shuro’s crush on Falin.

The fact that Shuro thought he could continue to pursue Falin without trying to understand or communicate better with Laois doesn’t make me feel good about his presence in the party at least. I’m not saying he’s an awful and bad guy, what I’m saying is that Shuro had an inherent disrespect toward Falin that he wasn’t addressing because “ooooh cute girl” but he literally hated her brother, whom she is remarkably close to.

Of course, the situation is resolved, but this situation was much more nuanced than “Laois is autistic” and “Toshiro experienced racism”. Falin is a key aspect of their dynamic and Laois still doesn’t get how he was disrespected so much because Shuro couldn’t be near Falin without also dealing with Laois, so he essentially pretended to be Laois’s friend. It’s just icky. You can’t hope to marry somebody and then suffer through a horrible relationship with your spouse’s family; Falin isn’t just going to leave Laois (and the dungeon for that matter) and go to the Eastern archipelago.

Hitsuhina just kill me. Cause at the beginning of the soul society arc, their relationship was such a driving force for each other's character. Toshiro wanted to get stronger for hinamori. He went to become a shinigami partly to be by her side and protect her. Hinamori was forced against her childhood's friend and it broke her. Their relationship was at the center of aizen's abuse and manipulation. We saw many cute glimpse into their past that gave us so much hindsight into their characters. I rerember toshiro protectiveness being described as "ardent passion" in the official guidebook (at least in the french translation)

They used to be a big deal damnit!

They just stop interacting?!! At all?!!!

All we get is one glance from hinamori when toshiro get his bankai back?

For fuck's sake, I didn't ask for much. Just a little acknowledgement of their bond and how much it suffered at the hands of aizen. For how much I ship them, I wouldn't even care if they ended up with other people just as long as they got a little closure.

The way you get these two polar opposite characters who love each other's deeply and are forced to hurt each other against their will by a manipulative asshole... And then you just never acknowledge it again? We don't get to see them rebuilt their relationship or break ties or acknowledge each other's existence more than a single time? Cool? Cool.

I have so many mixed feelings on Toshiro (aka Shuro).

Like he has the DADDY issues ever. Laios has too but Laios is in the opposite direction of "I'll never make my father proud, I can as well do my thing" while Toshiro is still trying to follow his father's wish and demands.

Like he couldn't care LESS about his servants. He doesn't treat them badly but he barely treats them. Does he even know their names? (Yes, it's because of daddy issues but at some point we have to stop accusing the parent and start to see our own faults)

Like he was just a boy who liked bugs and getting dirty. And then saw Falin who liked bugs and didn't mind getting dirty and thought "if I take her as my wife and my dad meets her and finds her interesting then maybe he will finally find me interesting too".

Like he showed more than necessary interest for another human being and he made it his whole character (oh, yeah, I'm the one who loves Falin, look how long I can go on sacrificing my needs for her SHUT UP YOU'RE DOING IT BECAUSE YOU FEEL GUILTY AND HOPELESS NOT FOR FALIN'S SAKE).

Like he had ONE person to find him interesting and he couldn't be sincerely thoughtful towards him. Yes, I know how it is to spend time with someone you find boring and have no connection but it is unfair to let the other be in the dark and I am the one who is in wrong here, not the other person, no matter how much they irritate me. Do I think Toshiro finally snapping and fighting with Laios is a good thing for both of them and their future friendship? Absolutely. Do I also find it cruel towards Laios? Absolutely, the boy becomes even more insecure after that, Toshiro could handle it better.

Yes, it is a cultural thing as well and I am aware Asians and, specifically for this character, Japanese have different approach in socialising and what is proper and acceptable, and I see how Laios and Toshiro show the clash between ignorant white man and Asian man that suffers from it, but we can't ignore that there are other Asian characters who don't act like him. Izutsumi? Rin? Heck, even Kabru could be considered! Others too! Even Toshiro's brothers and family! They're all different characters thar deal with their identity and their own trauma and experiences in their own way (and let's not forget they're not the focus of the story so we can't know everything about them or how they would react to everything or even their thoughts).

Could Toshiro be neurodivergent as well and had learnt to mask? It's very possible and it would make sense in many aspects of his character!

Is he a bad guy? No, of course not! Has he made mistakes? Many, of course! Has he shown good qualities? I doubt Laios party would consider him a friend if he hadn't and after his fight with Laios he gives the bell to Laios and still wants to help in whatever way he can.

As most of dunmeshi characters, he falls too close to reality and he gives me mixed feelings- even relating to him some times! But I can't deny the fact that, although an interesting character and rightfully liked by many fans, if I met someone like him irl I would dislike him.

Sweet and gentle s/o

Sakata Gintoki

🍨Gintoki seems to be the one who is constantly being attacked by others here as people wonder what he did to deserve someone as sweet as you. Shinpachi is a bit jealous that Gintoki has someone as gentle and sweet as you as a partner and Otose threatens him to better show his appreciation for you and not just act like the lazy guy he acts most of the time. Now, all the people around him are still happy for Gintoki of course and he knows that but he would lie if he would say that their words don't affect him a bit. Because he sometimes also feels that way. He sometimes feels like he doesn't deserve someone as considerate and kind as you even though he does get childishly jealous if you act sweet to someone that isn't him. He's broke so every gift you buy him or prepare yourself for him always fills him with a tad bit of guilt because most of the time he is too broke to get you something nice in return. But he never shows you that he is under pressure as he keeps his silly antics up to not make you feel guilty. The silver-haired male definitely gets a lot more protective due to your naturally gentle disposition though as it is one of the few ways he can actually return all your love somehow.

Hijikata Toshiro

🚬​He loves and hates it at the same time. On the one hand Toshiro adores how sweet and soft-spoken you are as it makes him unable to be mad at you for long and he often ends up blushing when you do something nice for him or just act sweet around him in general. On the other hand he is also so much more prone to feeling jealous and even more paranoid if you act that way around others and his attempts to hide his feelings always fail terribly. He likes keeping a tough and scary demeanor in public but he can't deny that he is a sucker for your gentle affection, especially when the both of you are alone so he is definitely getting a bit more possessive as he'd like you to save such sweet words and gestures for only him. At the same time he always has this nagging fear that someone might take advantage of you because of your nice personality which tends to make him more controlling when it comes to the people you spend your time with. Hijikata always tells you that he only has your best in mind but that is a lie as his own petty feelings definitely play a role in this. A part of him just believes that he knows some things better than you due to working in the Shinsengumi.

Okita Sougo

😈​Now this is a true example of the saying that opposites attract although he might have just blackmailed you into a relationship with him. Obviously no one needs to know that though. Sougo adores your gentle demeanor as well but for completely different reasons as he will always be on the more twisted and sadistc spectrum of love. Because he often bullies you for your nice behavior. A part of him just can't help but see you as a weak and dumb little thing for being the way you are and so he obviously thinks of himself as the one who is better suited to be in control in this relationship as you are too soft and naive. He's often putting you down by calling you an attention seeker whenever you act kind around others to stop you from being so outgoing because whilst he is a pure jerk, he doesn't like seeing you acting sweet with others. You will definitely suffer a lot of blows to your self-esteem because of Okita's sadistic personality and possessive behavior and he doesn't really mind if he ends up being the cause of your insecurities. As long as it refrains you from being sweet to everyone who isn't him he doesn't mind. You should reserve your kindness only for him after all even if he is an asshole.

Katsura Kotarou

🔵​It is obvious to everyone in his Joui faction that Katsura is a helpless simp for his darling and their gentle and soft-spoken disposition. Everything you do just seems to be something worth praising and gushing over in his eyes as this man is low-key a bit of a worshipper for you. He is dutiful and dedicated in his duties as the leader of his Joui faction and he knows that he can't have you involved in such dangerous affairs so he is more careful in keeping the relationship hidden from those who would take advantage of you. He is quite protective despite coming over like an utter fool at times. Despite his sometimes ridiculous and spontanous behavior though. Kotarou works surprisingly well with his darling because even if he can be quite persistent once he is in high spirits, Katsura is quite sensitive and for that talented in harmonizing with his darling most of the time. He can be quite clingy at times, especially if he has been away from you for some time due to his position as a leader, but even then he tries to not be too overbearing. That partially comes also from the fact that he is a wanted fugitive and for that always makes sure that the time he spends with you is always more private.

Takasugi Shinsuke

​❤️‍🩹​You're going to have a tough time with Shinsuke because your sweet personality is something so strange and foreign to him. Shinsuke seems to analyze your every word and action every time you try to break the ice between the two of you even if you are terrified because he is the one who abducted you. Why did he do that? He doesn't seem to like you and you feel like you're constantly doing something wrong. Matako tries to cheer you up by telling you that Takasugi just needs some time to come around. Truth is that Shinsuke hasn't met someone so genuinely nice and innocent in years and he is aware that he probably isn't the partner you deserve but is too possessive and selfish to care. A part of him is scared that he'll lose you too, especially since he does think that you are too kind for your own good. He doesn't hate you though for being that way. He just doesn't really know how to react whenever you try to make things less tense and to get to know him better besides staring at you with his eye, interested to see what you'll do next. The closest thing he does to show his affection seems to be by isolating and protecting you for quite some time as he needs time to mellow out.

Kamui

👊​Kamui has somewhat conflicted feelings due to his strong obsessive feelings for you. He despises weakness and your behavior coupled with the fact that you are only a human makes this much more worse. He considers the very fact that he fell for someone so very weak as an insult but at the same time he is much too possessive to allow you to go. Instead he just ends up verbally bullying and degrading you whilst also showing you how strong he is thanks to his Yato blood. This serves as a reminder to you that you shouldn't disobey him because he is strong whilst you are only weak. At the same time Kamui can be quite demanding at times for you to act sweet and nice around him because as much as he doesn't want to admit it, he enjoys seeing you act all soft-spoken and gentle around him. He likes to see it as a sign of submissive adoration from your side and it is good if he sees that you only act that way around him since it shows him that you have learned where your place is. Honestly, even if his darling acts exactly like he tells them to Kamui still resorts to mean and sadistic behavior at times just to rub his superiority in their face.

Tsukuyo

🌙​Tsukuyo likes to think that she has killed the woman inside of her but this statement of hers is always tested when she is with her sweet darling. Her facial expression never changes much but there is quite often a hint of a pink blush on her face whenever you compliment her or do something for her. A part of her is still acting too much like a woman for her taste after all and that is precisely why she tries to avoid talking to you. Tsukuyo is very protective though and is definitely stalking you a lot. Luckily to her skills as a ninja she has never gotten caught either so she has no reason to stop watching over you like she has been doing for quite some time now. She doesn't take well to any insults or unfit behavior directed against you due to her serious personality and normally replies to such acts with more violent actions such as throwing a kunai at the person. Seriously though, do not mess with her darling because whilst you with your sweet and gentle personality won't hold a grudge, Tsukuyo definitely will do that for you in your place. The poor lady is concerned that people might try to take advantage of you because you tend to be more forgiving.
