Nike Spec Ad : Pain Is The Reward Part I

Welcome to my Spec Ad series where I make random ads that I believe should be put out. I'm not a professional by any means but a dreamer that loves good commercials. Call me crazy but a commercial should invoke emotion inside us. Make us into action.

The commercial that made me fall in love with ads was the 2008 Nike “ Find Your Greatness” ad campaign during the Beijing Olympics.

The crux of the campaign was to showcase the great things people can accomplish both athletic feats and everyday acts of kindness, bravery, and compassion. That greatness wasn’t just inside these athletes we look up too but it was in all of us.

I hope you enjoy these as much as I enjoy writing them.

To start this sieges off I thought why not start with a brand that everyone knows and loves Nike.

OVERVIEW:

I think the worst feeling about working out is having the desire to start. You think 5 steps ahead on how you’ll feel. You’re tired, don’t feel good, or imagine it’s gonna be horrible so you kind of avoid it. But after finishing the workout you feel good. Well, that's how I feel about it. After I work out and I’m sore, I actually enjoy it. I enjoy the feeling. It motivates me to chase the soreness. Then it got me thinking: Is this what champions chase? That gratification that they did it?

I did sports like a lot of kids growing up and a lot of us obviously want to be champions. We all want to be the best. Not everyone can be the best. So it made me think more about what separates champions from the rest of us mortals. They don't do it for vanity or many are just talented and just think I guess why not. A champion wants it bad. They sacrifice everything and anything to get it. Friends, Family, and time to relax.their bodies. Pain doesn't stop them. They don't run away from it, they run toward it. So it inspired me to write a few Nike spec ads.

INT. BEDROOM - EARLY MORNING

A young adult in their mid-twenties to early forties lays in bed half-awake, restless and contemplating if they should get up. We see a close-up of the clock next to the bed, showing the time - 5:00 AM. The young adult sits up and rubs their eyes.

NARRATOR (VO): Your body is aching, everything hurts. You have work in a few hours. You’ve had a good week so far. Three days straight isn’t something to scoff about. Is one day gonna make a difference?

[Five to ten-second pause]

CUT TO:

INT. BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS

A montage of the young adult grabbing clothes, tying their shoes, and getting in last-minute stretches.

NARRATOR (V.O): It will. You're not wired to take a day off. You’re not programmed like other people. Your week isn’t over yet. That aching you feel is the prize. It’s the feeling you look forward to. The feeling you chase after.

CUT TO:

EXT. HOUSE - CONTINUOUS

The young adult steps out of their front door and into the crisp morning air, wearing Nike gear.

NARRATOR (V.O): It's not about winning that pretty first-place ribbon or the accolades, but the pain.

The runner framed up by the door frame shuts it and begins to run through the streets, pushing themselves through the discomfort.

NARRATOR (V.O): Pain is the reward.

[Closing title card: Just Do It or the Nike Check]

The scene ends with the young adult running through the streets, with a sense of purpose and determination. The camera fades to black with the Nike logo and the tagline "Pain is the reward" displayed prominently.

NARRATOR (V.O.): Just do it.

Catch Up

No silly! Not the red stuff!

So much has been happening and so fast especially in recent days, I've not been able to keep up with my blog the way I really want. I've been mostly re-blogging the great stuff ya'll are posting or re-blogging! I just want ya'll to know I follow a bunch of ya'll and like what ya'll do! (That's a LOT of ya'll! Yeee hahhh!)

Anyway, what really bums me is that I missed International Cat Day August 8!! I did make a re-blog/post when I saw a funny cat meme by @thegingerpowers and it reminded me of ICD! (btw,@thegingerpowers is a wonderful and funny blogger who is also an author as well. I encourage ya'll to check out her blog and her books!)

And I have a post-Olympic let-down! The Tokyo Olympics closed! It was such a great time! So many great athletes coming together to do their best in friendly competition! World records set! First-time medalists! Huge surprise incidents and personal challenges! I am proud my country (USA) led the way in gold medals, (yes, go ahead and call me a Nationalist!) but I am also happy for all the individuals that competed and especially those that also won medals! Thumbs up to Australia and Brazil for their successes! Cchina seemed to me to come out of nowhere to take the 2nd slot, one gold medal behind the USA. It's interesting that Beijing is hosting the Winter Olympics! (Omg! Only d6 months away! Very mixed feelings about that and I may boycott it even though I enjoyed their hosting of the Summer Olympics in 2008). I am happy to see the home country, Japan, place in the top 3! Hats of and cheerios (not the cereal, but hey that too!) to my UK fans and Team Britain! So happy to see you edged out the ROC in gold if not in overall medals! Although I applaud ROC's individual athletes, I have to say I think the ROC was still Russia competing although Russia was supposed to be banned. A political parlor trick to get around the ban in my humble and jaded opinion! I think it would have been much better (and more honest) to have the Russian athletes adopted by other countries and added to their teams. Just sayin'! So happy to watch the video/virtual/live handoff of the Summer Olympics from Tokyo to France! it was a medal winner in itself! I hope it gets uploaded to youtube! It's worth watching again! (Bonjour Paris, France Félicitations pour les Jeux Olympiques d'été en 2024!) Yes, 2024, not 2025!

Okay, my long Olympics rant deserves its only posting so I will edit this later and make a solely Olympics post.

Next items:

I started a series of "buried bondage" images, but stopped and decided to do re-blogs since so many wonderful, sexy, and funny posts came up in my feed! I hope to continue that but I have way too many browsers open now (I HAVE to start using two computers!) and may lose the ones I have chosen so far and not posted. Look for more buried bondage soon!

I think I also want to post about my test driving a car this weekend.

Another idea (and several open browsers later) was about making an homage to Akira Lane and Asiana Starr! I adore these two sexy women although (I'm embarrassed to say) I often confuse the two of them when I see them on here! A recent chat with a couple of other of my friends / tumblr followers has given me inspiration for other posts as well, including documenting my history of Dominants/"Masters".

January 20, 2021: Taken (2008)

Well, I know one thing about this movie. He’s gonna find ‘em. And he’s gonna kill ‘em. And also, Luc Besson didn’t direct this movie! Yeah, my bad, he wrote this movie. But, then, he also wrote Leon, so I wasn’t entirely wrong. Anyway, 2008!

I remember this year well. Obama was elected the first Black president of the United States of America; the Olympics took place in Beijing, months after a massive earthquake in Sichuan; the Large Hadron Collider was totally gonna make a black hole; and, of course, the most important news event of that year: Iron Man and The Dark Knight came out.

And of course, the film Taken came out, creating what is arguably the most repeated film meme ever. Or, at the very least, it’s WAY up there. It’s a 12-year old meme at this point, but lemme tell ya: this thing was HUGE in 2008. Not the movie itself, just the meme. And I could lie and tell you that I’m watching this movie because it’s another French action thriller, and it’s fitting, but…

...it’s the meme. It’s 100% the meme, I’m not gonna lie to you guys. So, uh...yeah, Taken, let’s do this. SPOILERS AHEAD!

Recap

Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) is dreaming of his daughter and wife. In the modern day, he brings a birthday gift to his daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace), and his bitter ex-wife Lenore (Famke Janssen), who is married to a very wealthy man, Stuart (Xander Berkeley). Bryan, meanwhile, is a recent and comparatively poor retiree, whose friends come over for a night of drinks.

Retiree from what, you ask? Well, it’s likely the CIA, given that his friends refer to military missions and Langley. They invite him to join security detail for a pop star, Sheerah (Holly Valance), In the process, he saves her from crazed fans, including a knife-wielding assailant. Not sure why that guy wants to LITERALLY STAB HER, but somebody needs to look into that guy!

Out of gratitude, Sheerah gives Bryan some references to give to his daughter, who wants to be a singer, apparently. However, when he sees her and Lenore the next day, all she wants from him is permission to go on a trip to Paris with her friends. When he shows his doubts for her safety, she’s upset, and his wife berates him for...government and military service? I mean, that stuff breaks up marriages, of course, but GODDAMN, Lenore’s bitter about it! Whoof.

Bryan’s definitely being made to be sympathetic, while Lenore’s the opposite of that. And Bryan’s understandably worried about his daughter’s safety, as she’ll be abroad. And we get the idea that Bryan’s a bit of a helicopter parent, but...c’mon! He’s underage daughter is asking to go to Paris with her friends! It’s cause for a parent to be worried, and yet Lenore is like, “She needs to be freeeeeeeeeee!” And that’s made even WORSE by the fact that both of them lie to Bryan, a father who clearly loves his daughter, because she’s actually following U2 on a music tour around Europe!

Which...really? U2? Who the hell can stand that much Bono, for their ENTIRE EUROPEAN TOUR? Anyway, what I’m saying is, Lenore sucks, and I’m not Kim’s biggest fan either. But I get the feeling that, given the one thing I know about this movie...Bryan’s gonna be proven right. So Kim and her friend, Amanda (Katie Cassidy) go to Europe, alone, despite Bryan’s understandable misgivings.

They IMMEDIATELY get hit on by Peter, a French boy who gives them a ride. He invites them to a party, Amanda accepts for them, and this is OBVIOUSLY A BAD IDEA. That’s even further confirmed by Peter making a mysterious call, telling the other person about the girls’ location. Kim doesn’t call Bryan, as promised, and Amanda is clearly a TERRIBLE influence. Looks like Bryan was completely right to be concerned, if his daughter’s gonna be so irresponsible. Oh, also because they’re about to get kidnapped.

Luckily, Kim had called Bryan just before, after realizing that he had called her, and he guides her through the upcoming kidnapping. With his help, although she gets kidnapped, Bryan is able to figure out that the kidnappers are Albanian, and that one of them is a six-foot tall bearded man with a moon and star tattoo on his right hand DAMN THAT’S OBSERVANT. But still...she’s been Taken.

Someone picks up the phone...and he says the speech.

Had to do it, folks. It’s the most iconic scene in the film. Time for action! Bryan calls a friend with Langley connections, then goes straight to Lenore and Stuart’s place, who find out that BRYAN WAS FUCKING RIGHT GODDAMMIT HOW DO YOU FEEL NOW

Having COMPLETELY FUCKED UP, Lenore asks Bryan to get her back safely. They actually figure out that the men who kidnapped her are professional sex-traffickers, who specialize in kidnapping travelling women and putting them in prostitution. But they tend to disappear...within 96 Hours. That’s how long Bryan has to find her, as well as being an alternate title for this film!

The time limit, by the way, is a common construct for the action-thriller. You know, “she has 12 hours to live,” that kind of deal. Thrillers are going to be peppered throughout this year, and there are a few coming up as well, so might as well start with this one, right?

Bryan flies to Paris, then makes his way to the apartment, tracing Kim’s steps up to her kidnapping. He also finds her destroyed phone, alongside an SD card with photos. From this, he gets a blurry look at Peter. I get the feeling that his face isn’t about to look much better. Speaking of, Peter’s playing his old tricks at the airport, and is caught by Bryan. Painfully caught. After Bryan fights off another guy, and chases Peter up a road, Peter also gets caught by karma.

80 hours left. Having exhausted options, Bryan meets an old contact, Jean-Claude (Olivier Rabourdin), who tells him where the Albanians hang out. He hires an Albanian translator, then heads for a prostitute-heavy area. He harrangues a prostitute until her manager comes out, whom he puts a small microphone on. With the translator’s help, he discovers that they’re having “merchandise problems” at a construction site.

Following a hunch, he makes his way there, and sees several drug-addicted young women in a makeshift brothel. Also there is his daughter’s jacket. The prostitute that has it, however, is not exactly cognitively sound at the moment. So...she’s Taken. By Bryan, who fights his way out of the brothel and construction site, with gunshots, explosions, and car chases along the way.

Bryan brings the girl back to a hotel, where he somehow gets ahold of an IV and medicine, and detoxes her in the room. Which, given the time frame and other factors...seems like a very large risk to take for testimony that, let’s be honest, right not exist. Still, as this is happening, he gets a call from Jean-Claude, asking to meet.

56 hours left. After 7 people dead, a destroyed trailer, and 3 people injured (and probably stolen medicine from a hospital, let’s be honest), Bryan isn’t exactly the best friend of the French government. He escapes police custody and heads back to the hotel, where the girl is cogent enough to remember where she got the jacket: from Kim herself, at the house with the red door on the road of paradise. No, really.

Bryan gets to the house, and poses as Jean-Claude...badly. He apparently passes his bluff check, and takes advantage of a corrupt police system, and makes them give him protection money. Over the course of the conversation, he figures out that one of them is Marco. Which means that he found him. And he said that when he found him…

After that spree is done, he searches the facility and looks for Kim. He doesn’t find her...but he does find Amanda. And sadly, he’s too late for her. Turns out, though, that he didn’t kill Marko (Arben Bajraktaraj), the leader of the group. And of course not! He has some questions.

Bryan tortures Marko using electricity, and he reveals that Kim’s been sold quickly, as she is a virgin. She’s been sold to Patrice Saint-Clair (Gerard Watkins), although Marko doesn’t know where he is. And so, Bryan fulfills his promise, and electrocutes him. He then makes his way to meet Jean-Claude at his home. And, uh...that’s when he crosses a line.

...Um. Bryan shot his wife. And yeah, Jean-Claude’s clearly not on the up-and-up, but he’s not directly complicit in the kidnapping of his daughter. And yeah, he’s in Bryan’s way, but JESUS CHRIST DUDE. He officially loses the moral high-ground here for me, even if his cause is just. Jean-Claude concedes, and Bryan gets the information that he’s looking for and leaves, knocking Jean-Claude out in the process.

Bryan goes to the Saint-Clair residence, where an auction is taking place for various young women. The last of these is, of course, Kim. Having barged into a booth of one of the buyers, he forces him to buy Kim (ew). Unfortunately, he’s caught and chained to a pipe, where Saint-Clair’s henchmen are about to kill him. But, of course...

Bryan escapes and kills Saint-Clair in the process, but not before finding out that Kim’s been Taken to a boat. He obtains a car, and after a length (and seizure-inducing) car chase, gets onto the boat, which is owned by the Sheik, a man of unknown Arabic origin. And yeah, in case you were wondering, this feels very...VERY...wrong. It’s brief, yeah, but...you gave a rich Arabic guy multiple wives obtained through illegal means and made them the main villain? FUCKIN’ OOF BRUV

Anyway, as expected, Bryan kicks the asses of everybody on the boat, and finally rescues Kim, killing the Sheik in the process. The two have a tearful embrace, and Bryan NEVER LETS HER OUT OF HIS SIGHT AGAIN PROBABLY. THIS IS ALL YOUR FAULT BONO. THIS IS ALL YOUR GODDAMN FAULT.

Well, Bryan wins the I WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG GODDAMIT award, Kim gets to go home and meet that singer from before, Lenore gives Bryan some consideration as a human being for once, Stuart stepfathers, and that’s Taken! Also, WHERE IN THE HELL ARE AMANDA’S PARENTS, A GIRL IS DEAD

Uber for Swimmers

A Sports Blog

During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, men’s 4 x 100m freestyle relay, the Americans dominated the Olympic-sized swimming pool measured approximately 50 meters in length, 25 meters in width, and 6 feet in depth, which features ten lanes measuring 2.5 m wide (Hoefs, 2020). The close competition of the teams had the audience sitting at the edges of their seats thrilled to find out who would garner the gold medal for this event. This competition particularly was very important for the American swimmer, Michael Phelps, as he will be making history of being the most successful athlete, winning eight gold medals and setting a new record for most golds won in a single edition of the Olympics (EuroSport, 2020).

But before we applaud Phelps for his victory, let us dig in first in the video and analyze how the Americans managed to win that gold. As the swimmers placed themselves on the diving block waiting attentively for the go signal marked by the officiating officials. This is a very stressful moment for every swimmer during a competition, because if you accidentally mishear the go signal and dive in first, you will be disqualified, and all your hard work and countless hours of practice would go to waste. Extra pressure is given to the first swimmers at that moment as one mistake will result to the disqualification of all the members of the team before they even got to swim a lap. Once it was go time, Phelps was leading during the underwater swim, immediately, Amaury Leveaux of France was the first to make a strong breakout swim giving the team an advantage. We can also see that as each swimmer approaches the wall, they attack, flip turn, and push off in a blink of an eye. While each swimmer flip turns, the Inspector of Turn lean in a little bit in order to ensure swimmers comply with the relevant rules after the start, for each turn, and at the finish. Alain Bernard was taking the lead for the last 100 meters of the event. However, the biggest plot twist occurred for team France as Jason Lezak chased him down at the very near end of the event and managed to touch the wall first garnering another gold for the Americans.

But how did he do it? As we can notice in the video, for the past three swimmers, the Americans were always behind and other teams were taking the lead. Once Lezak started his swim, he was very close to Leveaux but he didn’t manage to catch up to him until they approached the final five meters of the pool, which is the most crucial part of every competition. Well, the secret behind it is the ‘Uber for Swimmers’ tactic in which you use the speed of the swimmer beside you against him. This is best done at high speeds, cozy up to the lane line and hitch a ride, saving that energy and nitro for the last burst into the wall (Poirier-Leroy, 2017). Jason Lezak did this perfectly and showed us the most insane swim of his life.

This tactic helped Phelps break the past record of Mark Spitz in 1972. He reigned and made history, bringing home 8 medals. Another tactic that was used was the breathing patterns in which I noticed that they usually took three strokes before turning their heads to catch a breath. The importance of having breathing patterns is for the swimmers to create a rhythm when they swim on competitions, this gives them one less thing to worry about during the event. Breathing too many times during a short-distance swim like that will truly give you a disadvantage as this creates too much drag. During these events, the details are very important, you should do whatever can to save even the slightest millisecond, that is why some swimmers will shave their body, wear headcaps, and their suits as hair also creates a little bit of drag.

Summary:

Court Dimensions- 50 meters in length, 25 meters in width, and 6 feet in depth, which features ten lanes measuring 2.5 m wide

Equipment- Headcap, Goggles, and Swimsuit

Basic Skills- Breathing, kicking, strokes, and arm movement

Technical and Tactical Skills- Breathing patterns, Flip turn, Push Off, Diving, and Uber for Swimmers

Rules

• Swim in Freestyle ONLY!

• Wait for the previous swimmer to touch the wall before you dive in.

• Go when the starter signals (in this case, the beep)

• You must leave the water before the next swimmer finishes their leg of the race.

Officiate

• The Inspector of Turns carefully checked the turns of each swimmer in their assigned lane as they approached the wall.

• The Timekeepers start his watch at the starting signal, and shall stop it as soon as the swimmer in his lane has touched the wall.

• The Starter marked the go signal for the competition to start.

Check, Please! Archery AU

Okay so it was an idea of @beepboopbits and @zimmsbits had that just spiraled out of control. I would say I’m sorry, but... I’m really not.

Collegiate archery is kinda funky-- for example, there’s no one governing body but several-- and so i haven’t really gotten into many of the details regarding tournaments yet. This is loosely based off of my experiences with my university’s club/team structure, so these guys make up the competitive team and their ‘fans’ would probably be the club.

I have a problem and I may be continuing in this ‘verse. Without further ado:

Jack is the son of Canadian Olympian Bad Bob Zimmermann. Attempting to follow in his father’s footsteps, he started shooting recurve at the age of three, and competitively before his sixth birthday. He missed tryouts for the 2008 Games in Beijing because of an equipment failure; his riser (the handle part of the bow) snapped because of a machining error. Returning to the archery scene in early 2009 at the Vegas International Shoot, Jack found himself the victim of target panic in the shootoff. He put his bow down and disappeared for two years, only to reemerge by starting a collegiate archery program at Samwell University.

Bitty is still a former figure skater, but after an injury at the Southern Junior Regionals, he had to hang up his skates and find a different sport. His experiences as a counselor at a summer camp introduced him to archery—which, he was proud to inform his mother, had less injuries per participant than golf. (IT’S TRUE!). He too started off with recurve; initially barebow, and then Olympic recurve like Jack once he found a range nearby. He’s terrified of hitting his arm with the string, so Jack has to work with him on getting his front arm alignment right so that he actually hits the spot on the target he wants to. He’s good with the rest of the mental aspects of archery though. He did not compete before coming to Samwell. He and Jack are still best friends, mostly for his ability to bring Jack out of his own head at practice or a tournament. He’d probably make a better coach than an archer, but everyone still values his presence anyways.

Lardo is a Student Rec employee who was originally put in charge of taking care of the bales and setting up the safety net before Samwell practices. Jack and Shitty (mostly Shitty, let’s be honest here) eventually coaxed her to take her first shots. Her presence on the team is treasured because she has no real preference of barebow over recurve or vice versa, though she hates compound; that makes her invaluable for shooting Mixed Teams at outdoor tournaments (must be m/f teams that shoot the same discipline). Jack initially likes her just for that, but they find that they share the same things that they do in canon. She claims that a slightly more flexible schedule from being in art classes means she’s more capable of handling the logistics of everything, but in reality she’s just better at life than everyone else.

Ransom always brings his homework to tournaments and does it in between rounds, which can psyche out his competitors. It’s necessary, though. He used to shoot recurve as a child, but the rise of available compound bows combined with the intensity of his schedule drove him to make the switch, because he’d heard that compound required less practice (it’s true; training wheels are a thing). Nursey has a tendency to fiddle with his equipment just like he does lines in his poems, which can sometimes cause more harm than good. Because he and Dex shoot the same division, they often end up shooting next to each other at tournaments—they’re a great support group for each other.

Dex started looking for scholarships for Samwell, and then discovered the archery club. He qualified to join the team in his very first semester, because he used to shoot every summer before he was old enough to go out on the fishing boats. He shoots with a recurve because the equipment is generally cheaper and the basics are a lot more customizable.
