Something interesting in the wake of the murder of the health insurance CEO:
Perhaps it's a coincidence, but not that long after, Blue Anthem/Cross decided against a policy where they wouldn't cover anesthesia after the "medically necessary" line, so if your surgery ran long, you would be stuck with the bill for whatever anesthetic was used for that time. They said "Because of the misinformation going around about the policy, we decided not to do it."
(Like yeah right, sure, that makes sense. Instead of revising and clarifying a policy change, just not do it? Since when have companies/corporations done that?)
It just happened that they made this decision to go back on the policy following the assassination of a health insurance CEO where the shell casings had words written on it referencing health insurance policies, expressing violent rejection of their behaviors. Could be totally unrelated. With the timing though? Lol, lmao even.
Violence is not a solution, but sometimes it can scare the right people into behaving better, huh? Obviously this isn't going to fix the healthcare system, but it sure is a sign that things right now are untenable.
Like, this isn't even me condoning the act. It's just a fact that if the people in power don't use it to fix a system, the group of people without the power is actually much larger and someone in that group is eventually going to be motivated to do something extralegal to challenge it. Law of large numbers and all that.

Outdated grooming policies banning natural Black hairstyles have fueled racial inequities in schools and workplaces for too long. However, a new wave of legislative reforms and public advocacy aims to finally dismantle this form of discrimination. The CROWN Act (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) has emerged as a legislative solution, prohibiting race-based hair discrimination. To date, the CROWN Act has been enacted in 24 states and numerous municipalities but has stalled in the U.S. Senate after passing through the House. Additionally, some state-level versions of the CROWN Act still enable discriminatory targeting of Black hairstyles.
In Texas, the CROWN Act left loopholes allowing bans on hair longer than two inches, which explicitly singles out and prohibits natural Black hairstyles like afros and dreadlocks on male students. By failing to bar restrictive policies on length and color, Texas’ version of the CROWN Act falls short of fully preventing race-based hair discrimination. Such gaps at the state level undermine the spirit of the CROWN Act and must be addressed through truly comprehensive reforms that protect all facets of Black hair. This gap between legislative success and real-world implementation, as evidenced by the suspension of a Texas student months after the Act’s passage, highlights the need for comprehensive legislation to fully address hair discrimination. Moving forward, legislation must address hair length, color, texture, and style to create truly inclusive policies without loopholes that permit discrimination.
Hair policies that regulate length and color have specifically targeted Black students, leading to disproportionate discipline and loss of educational opportunities. National data reveal that while Black students represent 15% of the K–12 population, they account for 31% of all school suspensions. Black students nationwide are missing nearly three times as many school days due to suspension as white students, accounting for a disproportionate number of the total 11 million days of lost instruction. In one school district in Texas, research from the Center for Justice Research at Texas Southern University found that Black students are seven times more likely to be suspended compared to white students, often for discretionary, minor behavioral infractions. Repeated suspensions increase the risk of falling behind, dropping out, and having contact with the juvenile justice system. In fact, one study revealed a concerning cycle—students who were suspended from school were seven percent more likely to later have contact with the juvenile justice system. Moreover, once these students returned to their schools after suspension, they were 20% more likely than their peers to face another suspension.
The consequences of hair discrimination extend beyond the classroom. A 2021 study found that Black women with natural hairstyles are less likely to be recommended for a job interview compared to white women with curly or straightened hair. Natural hairstyles like dreadlocks were deemed less professional. This employment discrimination limits economic mobility and forces Black women to incur the financial and health burdens of damaging chemical treatments, including increased uterine cancer risk from chemical straighteners.
To achieve the goal of ending hair discrimination, the CROWN Act must expand to cover all facets of hair style and presentation without exceptions, such as those found in the Texas version. Congress should pass the federal CROWN Act, joining states like Colorado and New Jersey in enacting more comprehensive bills that close loopholes. Enforcement will also require dedicated resources and training. School administrators must learn how to shift away from punitive dress codes toward supportive, culturally-informed policies. Human resource professionals need guidance on removing Eurocentric appearance standards from hiring and grooming practices.
The CROWN Act reflects an important step towards ending race-based hair discrimination. However, true progress requires closing loopholes that allow for continued disproportionate enforcement against Black students and workers. Comprehensive legislation coupled with proper training and enforcement provides a path forward to ending harmful policies rooted in white supremacist standards. Schools and workplaces must move beyond narrow beauty norms towards valuing diversity in how individuals present themselves. This includes embracing and protecting all hair lengths, textures, and colors.
Why it matters
Hair discrimination limits educational attainment, career opportunities, and economic mobility for Black Americans. It also exacts a psychological and physical health toll by forcing assimilation to white beauty standards. The CROWN Act has the potential to eliminate centuries-old institutional policies and stereotypes that perpetuate racial inequities and trauma.

The artist's choice to make the image look and feel realistic as if it were in space and time sheds light on how much these complexities are served to us as if they were "reality". However, this is not to say that these topics are not real and important; in fact, they are the most important ideas. But these pieces of reality are only glimpses of the whole story, which get all the attention because of how much emotional weight they hold. The clear gaps and blurs between the words are deliberate, representing distinct ideas that don't tell the full story, yet are held up on a pedestal because they grab our attention without us even being conscious of it. Overall, the image is a powerful representation of how complex ideas are packaged and presented to us, and how we can become more aware of the gaps and blurred lines between them.
Bill Gates explained it precisely in his analysis of Harari’s work, is to not stop worrying, but instead, to focus on what things and exactly how much to worry about it. From terrorism to privacy encroachments, it seems that our reliance on these devices is at the root of many of the challenges we face. But what concerns me most is the effect that smartphones have on our mental health and well-being. We're bombarded with notifications and alerts, keeping us in a state of constant distraction and preventing us from truly being present in our own lives. I feel like the addiction to our phones not only affects us individually, but also has broader societal implications. From the erosion of empathy to the perpetuation of political polarization, this is a difficult cycle to break, and one that will require not only individual action, but also systemic change.
The beginning of Yuval Harari and Tristan Harris's discussion on WIRED only deepened my concerns. Harris's insight into how technology is designed to capture our attention and manipulate our behavior is alarming. Harari's warnings about the potential for AI to be used as a tool of control only add to my worries. But it's not just about the bigger issues. It's also about the personal impact that our cellphones have on our lives. I find myself constantly checking my phone, even when I don't need to. It's become a reflex, an addiction almost. And I'm not alone. I see people around me, heads down, eyes glued to their screens. We've become disconnected from each other and the world around us.
Yet, even knowing this, I can't imagine life without my phone. It's my connection to the world, to my loved ones, and to my work. And therein, I feel, lies the paradox. Our phones have become a necessity, but they also pose a threat to our well-being and our society as a whole. After seeing Harari's message about the importance of truth and resilience later on in the video, I had realized that the solution lies in finding a balance. I need to be more mindful about my use of technology, and to be aware of the ways in which it affects me. I also need to be more resilient in the face of the challenges that technology presents, in order to find ways to use it for good while avoiding its pitfalls.

Why am I saying this? Federal minister Lindner has ultimately and publicly requested a fundamentally different politics. Billions worth of tax cuts for a few top earners and at the same time pension cuts for all pensioners. That is not decent, that is not fair. Tax favors with the watering can(?) and as counter-financing a reach into the pockets of our cities and communes. Opting out of investments in the climate-friendly modernization of our country: That is also what Christian Lindner wants. This fuels uncertainty into our economy. And it squanders our chance to be near the front of future technologies. The USA, China and others aren't sleeping.
In a roundabout way Christian Lindner speaks of the lifting of efficiency reserves in our social insurance system.
However, behind this hides severe cuts in health and care, and less security when someone gets into distress.
