As I see it, Kate basically explains one of the key themes of 73 Yards midway through it. We come upon something completely unknowable (at least with the tools we have available at the time. The sun and/or Sontarans may have been inexplicable once, but no longer) and we invent rules to bind it up and make it work in our perceived world.

People abandon Ruby, and that's unknowable to her - thematically speaking, The Woman is the invented rule that "explains" why people abandon her. Unimportant details like what The Woman is and what The Woman does - and I really cannot stress enough that I can't think of anything less important to the episode than the trivia I keep seeing people get hung up on - are unknowable to us, and left for the viewer to impose their own rules upon.

... or get mad and demand RTD give us an explanation. One or the other.

That's my take on it, anyway.
