Homemaking, gardening, and self-sufficiency resources that won't radicalize you into a hate group
It seems like self-sufficiency and homemaking skills are blowing up right now. With the COVID-19 pandemic and the current economic crisis, a lot of folks, especially young people, are looking to develop skills that will help them be a little bit less dependent on our consumerist economy. And I think that's generally a good thing. I think more of us should know how to cook a meal from scratch, grow our own vegetables, and mend our own clothes. Those are good skills to have.
Unfortunately, these "self-sufficiency" skills are often used as a recruiting tactic by white supremacists, TERFs, and other hate groups. They become a way to reconnect to or relive the "good old days," a romanticized (false) past before modern society and civil rights. And for a lot of people, these skills are inseparably connected to their politics and may even be used as a tool to indoctrinate new people.
In the spirit of building safe communities, here's a complete list of the safe resources I've found for learning homemaking, gardening, and related skills. Safe for me means queer- and trans-friendly, inclusive of different races and cultures, does not contain Christian preaching, and does not contain white supremacist or TERF dog whistles.
Homemaking/Housekeeping/Caring for your home:
Making It by Kelly Coyne and Erik Knutzen [book] (The big crunchy household DIY book; includes every level of self-sufficiency from making your own toothpaste and laundry soap to setting up raised beds to butchering a chicken. Authors are explicitly left-leaning.)
Safe and Sound: A Renter-Friendly Guide to Home Repair by Mercury Stardust [book] (A guide to simple home repair tasks, written with rentals in mind; very compassionate and accessible language.)
How To Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis [book] (The book about cleaning and housework for people who get overwhelmed by cleaning and housework, based on the premise that messiness is not a moral failing; disability and neurodivergence friendly; genuinely changed how I approach cleaning tasks.)
Gardening
Rebel Gardening by Alessandro Vitale [book] (Really great introduction to urban gardening; explicitly discusses renter-friendly garden designs in small spaces; lots of DIY solutions using recycled materials; note that the author lives in England, so check if plants are invasive in your area before putting them in the ground.)
Country/Rural Living:
Woodsqueer by Gretchen Legler [book] (Memoir of a lesbian who lives and works on a rural farm in Maine with her wife; does a good job of showing what it's like to be queer in a rural space; CW for mentions of domestic violence, infidelity/cheating, and internalized homophobia)
"Debunking the Off-Grid Fantasy" by Maggie Mae Fish [video essay] (Deconstructs the off-grid lifestyle and the myth of self-reliance)
Sewing/Mending:
Annika Victoria [YouTube channel] (No longer active, but their videos are still a great resource for anyone learning to sew; check out the beginner project playlist to start. This is where I learned a lot of what I know about sewing.)
Make, Sew, and Mend by Bernadette Banner [book] (A very thorough written introduction to hand-sewing, written by a clothing historian; lots of fun garment history facts; explicitly inclusive of BIPOC, queer, and trans sewists.)
Sustainability/Land Stewardship
Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer [book] (Most of you have probably already read this one or had it recommended to you, but it really is that good; excellent example of how traditional animist beliefs -- in this case, indigenous American beliefs -- can exist in healthy symbiosis with science; more philosophy than how-to, but a great foundational resource.)
Wild Witchcraft by Rebecca Beyer [book] (This one is for my fellow witches; one of my favorite witchcraft books, and an excellent example of a place-based practice deeply rooted in the land.)
Avoiding the "Crunchy to Alt Right Pipeline"
Note: the "crunchy to alt-right pipeline" is a term used to describe how white supremacists and other far right groups use "crunchy" spaces (i.e., spaces dedicated to farming, homemaking, alternative medicine, simple living/slow living, etc.) to recruit and indoctrinate people into their movements. Knowing how this recruitment works can help you recognize it when you do encounter it and avoid being influenced by it.
"The Crunchy-to-Alt-Right Pipeline" by Kathleen Belew [magazine article] (Good, short introduction to this issue and its history.)
Sisters in Hate by Seyward Darby (I feel like I need to give a content warning: this book contains explicit descriptions of racism, white supremacy, and Neo Nazis, and it's a very difficult read, but it really is a great, in-depth breakdown of the role women play in the alt-right; also explicitly addresses the crunchy to alt-right pipeline.)
These are just the resources I've personally found helpful, so if anyone else has any they want to add, please, please do!

Cultivating Crunchiness: A Beginner's Guide To Growing Cucumbers at Home
Welcome to the world of home gardening, where the thrill of growing your own fresh produce awaits you! If you're a beginner eager to dive into the rewarding journey of cultivating cucumbers, you're in the right place. In this comprehensive guide, you will have a chance to learn some the basics of cucumber cultivation, to ensure a successful and bountiful harvest. Let's get started on your path to homegrown cucumbers!
Choosing the Right Location
Before you start digging, make sure you pick the right location first! Here's how.
Choosing the Right Cucumber Variety
It is crucial to select the right cucumber variety for your garden. There are two main types: slicing cucumbers, best for fresh consumption, and pickling cucumbers, ideal for those delicious homemade pickles. Popular varieties include Marketmore, Straight Eight, and Lemon cucumber. Consider your preferences and space available to make the best choice for your gardening adventure.
Preparing the Soil
Cucumbers thrive in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Start by testing your soil's pH levels; cucumbers prefer a slightly acidic to neutral environment. Amend the soil with organic matter like compost to enhance its fertility and structure. Ensure proper drainage to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.
Planting Seeds or Seedlings
Whether you choose to start from seeds or opt for seedlings, timing is crucial. Cucumbers are sensitive to frost, so wait until the danger has passed before planting. Sow seeds directly into the soil or transplant seedlings, ensuring a spacing of 12-24 inches between plants. Planting in hills or rows is a matter of personal preference, but be sure to provide adequate support for sprawling varieties.
Sunlight and Watering
Cucumbers are sun worshippers, requiring at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day. Choose a sunny spot in your garden to ensure optimal growth. When it comes to watering, cucumbers need consistent moisture, especially during flowering and fruiting. Water at the base of the plants to keep the foliage dry and prevent diseases. Consider mulching to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
Trellising Your Plants
To maximize space and encourage proper air circulation, consider trellising your cucumber plants. This not only prevents the fruits from rotting on the ground but also makes harvesting easier. Install sturdy trellises or cages, and gently train the vines as they grow. Vertical gardening not only saves space but also adds an aesthetically pleasing element to your garden.
Fertilizing the Crop
Cucumbers are heavy feeders, and providing them with the right nutrients is essential for a thriving harvest. Use a balanced fertilizer high in phosphorus and potassium, particularly when the plants start flowering. Be cautious not to over-fertilize, as this can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of fruit development.
Managing Pests and Diseases
Keep a vigilant eye on your cucumber plants for signs of pests and diseases. Common cucumber pests include aphids, cucumber beetles, and spider mites. Consider natural remedies like neem oil or insecticidal soap to control infestations. Fungal diseases such as powdery mildew can be prevented by providing adequate air circulation and spacing between plants.
Harvesting and Enjoying the Fruits of Your Labor
The moment you've been waiting for – harvesting your homegrown cucumbers! Harvest when the fruits are firm, well-colored, and have a glossy appearance. Use a sharp knife or scissors to cut the cucumbers from the vine, being careful not to damage the plant. Regular harvesting promotes continuous fruit production and prevents the plant from becoming overburdened.
If you've made it this far, congratulations, you've successfully navigated the basics of growing cucumbers at home! From choosing the right variety to harvesting your first batch, this guide has equipped you with the knowledge needed for a fruitful cucumber garden. Remember, gardening is a journey, and each season offers new opportunities to refine your skills. Embrace the joy of homegrown produce and savor the crisp, refreshing taste of your very own cucumbers. Happy gardening!

Adjust the Handles

Step 3: Position the Tiller
Take your tiller to the area where you will be using it, making sure that you have enough space to maneuver it. Set the tines on the ground and hold onto the handles for support.
Step 4: Pull the Starter Rope
Slowly pull the starter rope until you feel resistance, then pull it again with a quick, strong motion. Repeat this until the engine starts. Once the engine has started Start Your Honda Mantis Tiller in 5 Simple Steps, release the choke lever and let the engine idle for a few minutes before using the tiller.
Step 5: Adjust the Throttle
Once the engine has warmed up, you can adjust the throttle to your desired speed. A lower speed is ideal for light tilling or weeding, while a higher speed is better for breaking up tough soil.
Step 6: Engage the Tines
When you are ready to start tilling, engage the tines by pulling the clutch lever towards you. Slowly release the clutch lever to allow the tines to start spinning.
Step 7: Tilling Techniques

The Ultimate Guide to Creating a Beautiful Home Garden and Building Projects
At TOUFIX, we believe that beauty, health, and elegance are essential elements of a fulfilling life. That's why we are dedicated to providing you with expert tips, inspiration, and guidance on gardening and building projects. Whether you're a seasoned enthusiast or just starting out, our blog is here to help you create the home garden of your dreams and embark on exciting building endeavors. In this comprehensive guide, we will cover everything you need to know to transform your space into a haven of natural beauty and architectural splendor.
The Importance of Gardening in Enhancing Beauty, Health, and Elegance
Gardening is more than just a hobby; it's a transformative experience that can enrich your life in numerous ways. By cultivating your own garden, you have the opportunity to create a harmonious blend of colors, scents, and textures that can elevate the aesthetic appeal of your surroundings. Additionally, the physical activity involved in gardening provides an excellent form of exercise, contributing to improved fitness and overall well-being. Moreover, spending time amidst nature has been proven to reduce stress, enhance mental clarity, and promote a sense of tranquility and serenity.
Getting Started: Essential Tips for Creating a Beautiful Home Garden
1. Planning and Designing Your Garden
Before you start digging in the dirt, it's crucial to have a clear plan and design for your garden. Consider factors such as the available space, sunlight exposure, soil conditions, and your personal preferences. Sketch out a layout and choose plants that thrive in your region and complement each other in terms of color and height. By carefully planning your garden, you'll ensure that it evolves into a cohesive and visually stunning oasis.
2. Choosing the Right Plants
Selecting the right plants for your garden is essential to achieve the desired beauty and elegance. Research different plant species, taking into account their growth habits, maintenance requirements, and compatibility with your local climate. Opt for a mix of flowers, shrubs, and trees that offer a variety of colors, textures, and seasonal interest. Remember to consider the long-term growth potential of the plants to avoid overcrowding as they mature.
3. Soil Preparation and Maintenance
Healthy plants require a fertile and well-prepared soil environment. Prior to planting, assess the quality of your soil and make any necessary improvements, such as adding organic matter or adjusting pH levels. Regularly monitor soil moisture and provide adequate watering to sustain plant growth. Implement a mulching strategy to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and enhance the overall appearance of your garden beds.
4. Proper Planting Techniques
When it comes to planting, proper techniques play a crucial role in the success of your garden. Ensure that you dig holes of appropriate depth and width, taking into consideration the specific needs of each plant. Loosen the roots of container-grown plants and gently place them in the holes, backfilling with soil and watering thoroughly. Follow the recommended spacing guidelines to allow for proper air circulation and future growth.
5. Implementing Effective Maintenance Practices
To maintain the beauty and health of your garden, regular maintenance is essential. This includes tasks such as watering, fertilizing, pruning, and pest control. Develop a schedule for these activities and stay consistent in their execution. Regularly monitor your plants for signs of disease, pests, or nutrient deficiencies, and take appropriate measures to address any issues promptly. Remember to remove weeds regularly to prevent competition for nutrients and water.
Building Projects: Elevating Elegance and Functionality in Your Space
In addition to gardening, incorporating building projects into your outdoor space can further enhance its elegance and functionality. Whether you're considering constructing a pergola, installing a water feature, or building a garden shed, these projects can elevate your home's aesthetic appeal and provide practical benefits.
1. Pergolas and Outdoor Structures
Pergolas offer a unique blend of architectural elegance and functional purpose. These structures provide shade, define outdoor living areas, and serve as stunning focal points in your garden. Consider different design options, materials, and finishes that harmonize with the overall style of your home and garden. A well-designed pergola can create a captivating space for outdoor entertainment and relaxation.
2. Water Features and Garden Art
Integrating water features and garden art into your outdoor space can add a touch of serenity and visual interest. From ornate fountains to tranquil ponds, the sound and movement of water can create a soothing atmosphere. Sculptures, statues, and other artistic elements can serve as focal points, complementing the natural beauty of your garden. Select pieces that resonate with your personal taste and blend harmoniously with the surrounding flora.
3. Garden Sheds and Storage Solutions
Functional and stylish garden sheds provide valuable storage space for tools, equipment, and gardening supplies. These structures can be customized to match the architectural style of your home, seamlessly blending into the overall aesthetic. Optimize the design by including shelving, workbenches, and ample lighting to create a practical and organized workspace. A well-designed garden shed adds both elegance and functionality to your outdoor environment.
