Inspired by this post and a comment I've just realised it may be helpful for people just learning to sew and make clothes what's easier to start with and what's harder.
So offering my opinion as a cosplayer who's sewn a lot of things.
(Baring in mind this is as the most basic version, not taking into account pleats or collars etc)
Starting with easier.
- T-shirts and tops, fairly simple, you could literally a square/rectangle and leave bits unsewn for the sleeves and head and it'd still work, for the sleeves, it's just more rectangles.
(Will help to curve the holes though, especially for the neckline)
- Dresses honestly pretty similar just long rectangle, just means you're using more fabric.
With both of these if you want to take it in anywhere to make it more form fitting it tends just to be like a curve inward, just make sure it's all flat or you'll catch some fabric on the side you're not looking at and have to go over again and possibly have puncture holes depending on what fabric you're using.
-Skirts again pretty simple, it just depends how you want to do the waist, and making sure if it doesn't unfastened all the the way down that the top of the skirt can go over your hips.
- Trousers (pants) are hell, I know people that have degrees in fashion or costume making and still despise making trousers.
Important to remember that you're probably gonna need the back to come a bit higher up, if you find it riding too low add in a long triangle, you'll often find bought jeans with this done on purpose.
The inseam? Honestly I have no tips it's why I hate making trousers.
If you're using an elastic waistband pretty sure the rule is elastic the measurement of your waist, fabric to the measurement of your hips/the biggest oart it has to go over. Elastic will stretch but not all fabrics will.
- Jumpsuits/Dungarees, I haven't made many but the issues here is again the inseam plus making sure you don't give yourself a wedgie cause it needs to go over your shoulders as well, so probably like give extra length than you would for top + trousers and then take it in.
- Gloves are a nightmare, would not recommend, I only tend to make them for facepaint characters if I can't find some online that are long enough. You will have to unpick some thread between your fingers, I don't know what else to offer.
Almost anything that fits you when on and is just a pain to put on can be fixed with a longer zip, I have a dress that fits perfectly when on but because its fitted at the waist it won't go over my hips or shoulders unless the zip goes all the way to my hips, but it works.
Will eventually do like a proper guide to making stuff as simple as possible, I have both a top, trousers and cloak to make for an upcoming cosplay so that's gonna be fun.

Since November 2023 i have been designing, patterning, and making my own clothes from scratch. I have made 5 articles of clothing including a shirt with giant sleeves, skirts, and dresses. But today i bought my first real sewing pattern! I have never even looked at one. Any tips?

Hey y'all! I was thinking about trying to share how I create my own plushie sewing patterns, and I'm sure I'll figure out more things to share, but the first thing I start with (once I decide what I want to make) is figuring out what the limiting factors are for the final product
Frequently, the limiting factor is minimum size; there is a minimum amount of width each piece has to have to be able to be turned right side out, so for things like the ant and the giant frog, the narrowest part of the ant legs and frog toes were drawn so that they could be turned right side out, and the rest was scaled to fit Sometimes, the limiting factor is maximum size. For me, this is usually because I have a specific fabric I want to use for the project and only have so much of it left, and must make the pattern small enough to fit the fabric I have. Occasionally, though, the limiting factor size-wise is the construction technique I am using for the plushie. If I am creating something with a fairly flat pattern made of the same pattern piece cut out twice, like the eel, Fred the Fish of Minimal Effort, or either of my frog patterns' bodies, where I am not using darts or gussets to create three dimensions, my size is limited by the stretch of the fabric. It's totally fine to use the stretch of the minky/fleece/other fabric to create the 3D shape, just make sure to take into account that it will only stretch so much, and that to get maximum stretch you'd need to overstuff it (making a plushie less soft). Also keep in mind that depending on your fabric, stretching it in one direction might make it smaller in the other direction One final thing to keep in mind is that your seams will not stretch as much as the rest of your fabric. With stretchy fabric, you can sometimes choose where to put your seams so that you can shape the finished plush as much by where it doesn't stretch as by where it does (this is a thing I know I have done but I can't remember off the top of my head which plushies I used it in, I'll take a look and share a picture of them if I remember)

Some updates from this week 😊 I caved and got myself a sewing machine!! I found one second hand very cheap, so I went shopping for some instructive sewing books to start learning and I found a few! but I also found ..all these other books 😔💦 I keep buying repeats because of the pretty editions or different language but..these editions of classics have embossed covers with metallic details, gilded edges an glossy pages I also found this travel journal from Charles Garnier when he travelled across Spain in 1868 with his wife, painter Gustave Boulanger and architect Ambroise Baudry and documented everything they did in little verses and sketched the buildings and people and it is so funny, it even has the whole itinerary with travel times, hotels and more all in his handwriting and with a transcript, I love it so much 🥺

I started sewing for the first time last year, first thing i made was my "dream dress", the dress i made last November for renfare. I imagined building it my head stitch by stitch, watched a couple youtube videos, and just made it. It changes colors in UV light and has pockets so big that i can fit my sketchbook (8" by 5") in them. So many people will tell you to start with sewing patterns, dont. I bought my first pattern a month ago, and id say sewing it my own way is definitely less confusing than following their instructions. This IS the fuck around and find out hobby. I have sewn for a year, used mock ups 1 time, never used a premade pattern, and i have never made something that didn't fit me perfectly. Watch some youtube videos, gto thrift stores, go to the fabric section, and make shit out of bedsheets that were 2 dollars.
Btw i knew a lot about sewing before i ever started because I'd purposely interact with sewing tip videos on tiktok so the algorithm would show me a shit ton of sewing hacks so by the time i researched the badics i already knew all the tricks too.
