The character guidelines for the Beetlejice animated series.

I've got 36 years of Beetlejuice stuff (I started collecting in 1988), including all kinds of things from the movie and the animated series.

This is the official guide the screenwriters and animators used to stay consistent with the cartoon's version of the characters.

Especially note what they kept and what they changed from the movie.

Tim Burton was involved with the show from the start, so all the changes were with his permission and guidance.

If I ever dig out the rest I'll post it.

It’s Heathers Day 2024, and this week in September also sees the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice film come out. So I combined the two, since Heathers & Beetlejuice are in the same universe in my Heathers AU.

Veronica, Lydia and Will are cousins in the AU so it was fun to finally draw all three together.

Beetlejuice (1989-91)

A powerfully magical neurotic ghost and his young human friend make mischief in the regular world and the neitherworld for friends, family, and enemies alike.

 Easily one of the best parts about this series is that there are a great many amusing gags squeezed into each episode, mostly bizarre slapstick, haunting pranks, and so many puns. Some of the puns are even pretty clever and satisfying. It’s useful that the characters are already introduced from the film in an expanded universe with new and consistent characters.

 With there being so many jokes it’s an inevitable hazard that some of them aren’t so great, which isn’t too bad since they’re brief so there will be others immediately. Some are also repeated, occasionally in the same episode which isn’t ideal. The humour focused on grossness are kinda lazy but at least reinforce the character.

 A few episodes parody classic literature or film genres which is done effectively and it’s fun to see what gets changed for jokes. The series provides many unusual animation opportunities due to the bizarre unpredictability of the universe. Some of the other best episodes are when it reflects on itself as a show, breaking the fourth wall, and in one case suggesting the show is a show being made in the show for the neitherworld to watch.

 It’s hard to binge due to the similarities between the episodes, this isn’t as bad for the themed ones. It’d work a lot better in short bursts so it’s a wonder it wasn’t picked up again for early morning kids viewing. One narrative element which doesn’t send the best message is that Beetlejuice is casually mean to his friends to the point of physical abuse and isn’t chastised enough to stop, in one episode even showing it as justified because his friends would be worse people without being constantly beaten down; it’s not good subtext in those cases.

 5/10 -Can’t find a better example of average-

 -The design for the Monster Across the Street is based on that of Gossamer from the Looney Tunes cartoons.

-The CGI adverts in a different animation style to the rest of the show were originally to be stop-motion animation similar to the style used in the film but it was considered too expensive.

I'm just going to post a piece of this every day as I work through the old file and do the editorial clean-up I've wanted to do on this for years. The thing to keep in mind is that I wrote this over a few months in late 2000. This is the second-oldest surviving piece of writing I've done in any fandom; I'm so glad that seeing the musical yesterday kicked my ass into putting this back online.

First bit just went live. There weren't chapter titles in this fic's first iteration, so those will be new to anyone who read it years ago.

Shadow MIlk Cookie as Beetlejuice AU

Idea spawned from a lovely artwork on ex-Twitter by @Ashuribbon 

Shadow Milk Cookie is basically Beetlejuice from the old 1989 cartoon and Reader is their Lydia. 

Shadow Milk Cookie gets up to all kinds of PG mischief and Reader is often the one running damage control or cleaning up the mess left in their realm by Shadow Milk (often to their annoyance) or getting brought along on adventures in his realm. Similarly only capable of being summoned or dismissed from Reader’s realm by saying his full name three times in succession.

while it would seem to an outsider that they should hate each other they are actually each other’s only true best friend

(since Shadow Milk’s pranks have a habit of coming off as antagonizing if not mean spirited thus causing alienation, and Reader is regarded as a social outcast for their esoteric interests and a-typical behavior (dealer’s choice))

and they would move the sky and land of their respective realms for each other and ensure each other’s wellbeing.

(I don’t know how deep Beetlejuice’s friendship/affection towards Lydia ran since there were times I read that Beetlejuice had a weird crush on her, sooo… do with that what you wish)
