The President Wears Prada (William Nylander) | Chapter 1
Tumblr media
A/N: To celebrate William “Thirst Trap” Nylander’s birthday last Friday, I’m going to do a double post this week!  (Also maybe because he’s technically not in this chapter).  Make sure you set your clocks for Thursday at 7:30pm cause that’s when I’ll post Chapter 2.  Chapter 3 will then proceed next Monday on our regular once-a-week schedule.
September 3rd, 2019
Aberdeen Bloom was still looking for a job.
She was still sending out her resume to companies.  She was still making follow-up phone calls.  She was still creating alert notifications for jobs she’d be interested in.  She was still going for interviews.  She was still shaking hands and thanking people for their time.  She was still writing follow-up thank you emails.  She was still getting rejection calls.  She was still submitting work to writing contests and magazines.  She was still getting “It’s not what we’re looking for right now” emails.
She sighed.
So maybe getting the dream gig was harder than she thought.
It wasn’t like the bank had let her go.  She was still earning something to keep her afloat, but it was the bank.  It wasn’t writing, it wasn’t anything else.  It was the same stuff every single day and Aberdeen was starting to resent it.  She didn’t move downtown to stay a bank teller.  She moved downtown to start her career, and this was not starting her career.
But then a phone call came on Sunday – peculiar, she thought, since it was a long weekend and had expected everybody and their mothers to be at a cottage – asking if she wanted to come in for an interview.  To MLSE.  For the personal assistant job.  Aberdeen didn’t even remember applying to MLSE.  But she was desperate, so she said yes, and now she found herself looking in the mirror with her best “interview outfit” on ready to ace it.
She took a deep breath.  She could do this.  She packed her bag, made sure she had her wallet at keys, and left the condo, deciding to walk the short way to 50 Bay Street so she could pick up breakfast on the way.  Even while eating the ham and swiss sandwich, she could feel the butterflies in her stomach – it didn’t calm her nerves at all.  For some reason, she felt like this was her last chance to build something towards her career.  If she didn’t, she’d be stuck bank-telling forever.  When she stood outside the doors of 50 Bay Street, she took a deep breath before walking in.
“When you arrive, tell the receptionist you are looking for Frances Munro” the woman on the other line had told her when she called for the interview.  As she approached the receptionist, she tried to look as confident as possible.  “Hi, my name is Aberdeen Bloom.  I’m here for an interview with, um, Frances Munro?”
“Aberdeen Bloom?” another voice called out.
Aberdeen looked up to see another woman lurking in the back, a clipboard in hand, dressed impeccably well.  “Yes.  Hi.”
The woman looked at her.  Aberdeen could see her give a quick up-down.  “Great.  Human resources certainly has an odd sense of humour,” she quipped, chuckling for nobody but herself.  “Follow me.”
Aberdeen did as she was told, giving a polite nod to the receptionist who was already ignoring her.  She circled around the desk and followed Frances, who walked through the door but didn’t hold it open.  “Okay, so I was Brendan’s personal assistant but I recently got promoted so now I’m looking for someone else,” Frances explained.
“Oh, so you’re replacing yourself.”
“Well, I’m trying to.  We tried to be proactive and hire early but the last two Brendan sacked after only a few weeks.  We need to find someone who can survive here – who can survive Brendan’s schedule and survive the pressure of the Leafs.  Do you understand?”
“Yes.  Absolutely.”  Aberdeen looked around awkwardly.  “Who is Brendan?”
“What?” Frances stopped dead in her tracks to look back at Aberdeen.  “Oh my God, I will pretend did not just ask me that – Brendan Shanahan, he’s the president of the Toronto Maple Leafs,” she practically hissed at her, continuing her walk.  “Not to mention a hockey legend.  If you work a year for him you can get a job in any adjacent field you want – sports, media, journalism, writing, whatever.  A million people would kill for this job.”
Writing.  Writing.  WRITING!!!!!  Alarm bells were going off in Aberdeen’s ears.  “It sounds like a great opportunity.  I’d love to be considered.”
Frances giggled, pushing her clipboard up to cover the smile on her face.  They had stopped in front of a series of doors and Aberdeen felt like she was going to have to pick the one without the tiger in it.  “Aberdeen…the Toronto Maple Leafs are a hockey club.  An interest in hockey…even just a little bit, is crucial,” she explained condescendingly.  Aberdeen wondered how someone like this could even get promoted.  “Do you play hockey?
“No.”
“Do you watch hockey?”
“No.”
Frances looked shocked.  “Do you know who the Toronto Maple Leafs are?”
“Of course I know who the Toronto Maple Leafs are,” Aberdeen huffed.  “I just don’t…I mean, I don’t…”
“If I put a picture of Mats Sundin in front of you right now could you pick him apart from Wendel Clark or Doug Gilmour?”
There was an awkward pause.  “Are those Mr. Shanahan’s right-hand men?”
“Oh my God,” Frances muttered under her breath.  “Have you ever been to a game?”
“Yes.”
“Are you lying?”
“No – no, I’m not lying,” Aberdeen said quickly.  “One of my friends – her dad gets tickets through clients or whatever.  I’ll go to maybe one a year with her family.  But it’s not – I’m not like…the experience is fun.”
Before Frances could respond with something that was ruder than the last thing she said, her phone let out a really loud notification.  She balanced the clipboard on one hand as she took out her phone.  But as she looked at the message on the screen, her face dropped.  “Oh my God, oh my God, no!”
Aberdeen’s face dropped too.  “What’s wrong?”
Frances dropped her clipboard onto the desk and ran around it, grabbing the phone receiver and dialling a number.  Almost automatically, she began talking.  “He’s on his way.  Tell everyone the story needs to be retracted now,” she barked before hanging up.  A man walked through another door and suddenly, it was complete mayhem.  People were running through everywhere.
“He wasn’t supposed to arrive until 9:30.  What happened?” the man asked Frances.
“Those idiots at the Sun had the audacity to actually post the story about his daughter online.  God, these people!” Frances huffed.
Aberdeen stood awkwardly as everyone seemed to go into mayhem mode.  Frances was running around like a chicken with her head cut off, that one guy had mysteriously disappeared, and men in suits were in and out of everywhere with panicked looks on their faces.  She watched as Frances whipped into the office and began putting stuff out on the desk – a glass of San Pellegrino water, a venti Starbucks, and the sports sections of all the local newspapers.  When she was done, Frances grabbed the clipboard from her desk, a pen, and ran back down the corridor they just came from, leaving Aberdeen there, standing alone.  Awkwardly.
Eventually, she could hear Frances’s voice again – much more polite this time – and footsteps of very expensive shoes clacking down the hallway.  “Yes Mr. Shanahan, of course.”
“And tell David at The Sun that I’m this close to revoking media access to the locker room if he publishes another article to do with my children ever again,” a voice Aberdeen could only assume was Brendan Shanahan’s was echoing down the hallway.
“I’ll get right on it.”
“Then tell Ben up in the legal department to draw up the paperwork necessary for that to scare them,” she heard, and finally, they rounded the corner.  Frances and Mr. Brendan Shanahan, President of the Toronto Maple Leafs.  He was angry.  Aberdeen could tell, even if she didn’t hear any of his last sentences – his body language showed it all.  She stepped back a few steps so he could get into his office unimpeded, where he would very obviously yell at the top of his lungs once he shut the door.
“Who’s that?” he asked.
Frances stood in front of Aberdeen, shielding her from Brendan’s view as he looked back at Aberdeen from inside his office.  “Nobody – well – human resources sent her about the personal assistant job and I was going to interview her…but, but she’s hopeless,” she chuckled out, “and totally wrong for the job—”
“Well clearly I’m going to have to do that myself, since the last two you sent me were completely inadequate,” he deadpanned.  Frances’s back stiffened at the words.  “So send her in,” he finished as he sat down at his desk.
Frances walked out of Mr. Shanahan’s office.  “Mr. Shanahan would like to see you,” she said politely, loud enough for him to hear.  It was when she leaned in closer that she began to whisper so he couldn’t.  “Brendan Shanahan is the absolute nicest person you will ever meet,” she began, “but he is also the busiest, most intense, most dedicated hockey professional in the entire National Hockey League.  Do you understand?”
Aberdeen gulped.  “Yes.”
“And I hope you know that this is a very difficult job for which you re totally wrong, and if you mess up my head is on the chopping block.”
‘That might not be so bad’, Aberdeen thought.  She would have appreciated some words of encouragement, like what Kasha had given her this morning, rather than the shpeal she was getting now.  But Aberdeen digressed, and nodded her head.  She took out a copy of her resume from her purse before walking in.
When she did, she couldn’t help but notice all the fine detailing of his office.  A lot of oak, bookcases, a lot of framed pictures of his family, and a giant Toronto Maple Leaf logo plastered – literally plastered – onto the wall.  He even had a giant oak desk – so regal – in the middle of the room.
“Who are you?” Brendan asked in a tone much softer, but still angry.
Aberdeen took a deep breath.  This was her time to shine.  “Hi Mr. Shanahan.  My name is Aberdeen Bloom,” she said, stepping forward awkwardly to place her resume on his desk.  “I recently graduated from the University of Toronto—”
“And what are you doing here?” he asked.
Aberdeen blanked.  What was she doing here?  “Um, well, I think I could do a good job as your assistant, and um…” she started, noticing that Brendan was putting on his glasses.  Her gave her a look as those words left her mouth.  He grabbed the newspapers off his desk and placed them in front of him, over her resume.
‘Alright Aberdeen.  Cut the bullshit’ she told herself.  “Yeah, so, I graduated U of T and want to become a writer.  I sent my resume out everywhere, and my work to try to get published, and finally I got a call from the MLSE human resources department, and…well, basically it’s this or bank-telling.”
Brendan didn’t look up from his newspaper.  “So you’re not a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs.”
Aberdeen’s body stiffened.  “Uh…no?”
“And before today you had never heard of me.”
“…No.”
There was an awkward pause.  Brendan didn’t seem like he had any more questions in him – if he even cared.  It was so clear that he didn’t and that she was bombing this interview.  But Aberdeen felt more words coming.  “I was recently published in Acta Victoriana, the oldest continuous university magazine in Canada – twice, actually – and was also published in the Hart House Review—”
“I think we’re done here,” Brendan said, not looking up from the newspaper.  That was it.  Cut throat.  Didn’t care.
Aberdeen swallowed her pride.  So this interview was a dumpster fire from the get-go.  But it was him that came in angry and him that came into this without an open mind.  She couldn’t help but scoff at how he dismissed her; he didn’t even have the courtesy to look up.  She turned to walk out.
‘Don’t let it end like this’ her mind told her.  ‘You have so much within you that he doesn’t want to see’.
So she turned around.  “You know what?  You’re right.  I know nothing about hockey,” she began, her voice as strong and powerful as she could make it.  “The woman who brought me in asked if I knew the difference between Matt…Gilmour and something…something Sundin, and I didn’t.  I don’t fit in here,” she continued, noticing that he finally looked up.  “I’m a girl who grew up in an old bungalow in Etobicoke with immigrant parents.  I’m an English major with a double minor in classics and film.  But I’m smart.  I’m really f…really smart, and I learn fast, and I will work hard if you give me the chance to do so here—”
“Good news – they’ve agreed to take down the story,” somebody burst into the room interrupting her speech.  Brendan looked at her until the person laid their iPad down in front of him.  “The tweet linking the article is gone and it’s completely gone off their website.  Adrienne Batra wants to call you to personally apologize.”
“There’s no way I’m speaking to that woman,” Brendan mumbled.  “Tell her I want it in writing.  And one to my daughter as well.”
“Thank you for your…time,” Aberdeen said, as if he gave her any.  She walked out of his office and out of his life forever.
Aberdeen decided to take the stairs, slowly walking down the flights of stairs, hearing her shoes clack against the bare concrete.  There, she could at least wallow in her self-pity after that train wreck of an interview.  She could deliberate about her next choices and steps.  Keep bank-telling?  Go back and get her Master’s?  Take a new course?  Tell her parents how she was failing?  Move back home?  Never do anything with her life?  Live in her parents’ basement for the rest of her life?  Maybe she should just stay in this stairwell.  Maybe she should start living here, since there was nothing else for her out there in the big wide world.  Maybe she’d become a hermit.
As she finally reached the ground floor, she thanked the receptionist again, who ignored her again.  Typical.  As she was about to walk out of 50 Bay Street, she heard her name being called.  “Aberdeen!”
She turned around.  Frances was waving her back, rolling her eyes at the same time.  Aberdeen furrowed her brows.  Did she forget something?  What was going on?  She scurried over to Frances.  “What’s wrong?”
“Brendan wants to speak to you.”
Aberdeen gulped.  She was going to get yelled at by the President of the Toronto Maple Leafs.  He was going to completely obliterate her entire life and not-yet-burgeoning career for that little stunt she pulled inside his office with that speech, and she’d never be able to find a job anywhere in Toronto again.  She may as well just move into her parents’ basement now.
As they both rode the elevator back up, Aberdeen’s heart kept beating faster and faster.  “Do you know what he wants to speak about?” Aberdeen asked.
“I have no clue,” Frances said absent-mindedly, typing something into her phone.
When they arrived back upstairs, Frances led her straight back into Brendan’s office.  He was working on his laptop now, instead of reading his newspaper over Aberdeen’s resume.  “Brendan, I have Aberdeen back for you,” Frances announced.
“Excellent,” he said, his voice much more upbeat than what is was five or ten minutes ago.  “Franny, I’d like you to take Aberdeen to get her picture taken for her new MLSE identification badge,” he said.
Frances’s eyes bulged out of her head.  So did Aberdeen’s.  “W-What?” Frances stuttered out.
“And after that, I’d like you to take the town car and take Aberdeen to the Eaton’s Centre to get her an iPad Pro with a keyboard so we can start the process of downloading all the necessary apps and internal mail server she’ll need to do the job.”
Aberdeen’s stomach dropped.  “I…I got the job?” she asked, completely flabbergasted.  Was he nuts?  Completely, certifiably insane?
“You start next Monday.  Is that fine with you?”
Aberdeen found herself nodding.
***
“I’m so glad Steven could get that done for you today,” Brendan said as he rounded the corner of his desk so he could sit in his fancy big chair.  Aberdeen nodded, looking at the screen of her new iPad Pro.  Steven, one of the guys from tech support, had helped her download everything she needed to have on it.
“Yeah.  It was all really fast.”
“After you finish up here today you may need to go back to the Eaton’s Centre,” Brendan informed her.  “You’re going to need to purchase a work wardrobe.  Keep every receipt because MLSE will reimburse you.  I prefer black, but really…get whatever you think is appropriate for an office.”
“Okay.”
“No heels necessary.  When we travel, I obviously don’t mind something more laid back – especially trips to the west coast.  Do you have a valid and working passport?”
“Yes sir.”
“Make sure you have it when traveling.  Our charter plane will still need to see it.  We’ll make copies.”
“Yes sir.”
“You’ll need to be available every game day.  We usually have Sundays off, but it’s a very untraditional schedule.  You’re okay with that?”
“Yes sir.”
“And I have your contract for you,” he said, grabbing some paperwork on the desk.  “We’ll have someone from the legal department come and explain it shortly,” he handed it to her, “but you’ll see the salary at the bottom of the first page.”  Aberdeen looked down.  Her eyes bulged at the number.  “If everything is to your liking, then we can sign.”
“Okay,” she nodded her head.  She gulped.
Brendan looked at Aberdeen and could tell she was nervous – it was obvious in her short “Yes sir” responses anyway, but she looked like she wanted to curl into her shell.  “Before Ben from legal gets here, I would like to apologize about this morning,” he said.  “A local newspaper ran an article about one of my daughters, and my children…well, my children are completely off-limits.  Everybody knows that.  But sometimes some journalists like to see how far they can take things, even though they know family is off limits.”
Aberdeen understood where he was coming from.  If anyone ever said anything bad about Siena or Camden, she’d have their head on a spike.  She couldn’t even imagine what it was like for a father, or any parent for that matter, to have an article published about their child without their permission.  “I understand, Mr. Shanahan.”
“We are like a family here, you know – MLSE, but the Leafs especially.  You will feel part of that family soon enough.”
Aberdeen nodded nervously.  “I’m sure I will, Mr. Shanahan.”
“Well…” he shrugged his shoulders, leaning back in his chair and smiling at her.  “Congratulations, Miss Bloom.  You are now an employee of MLSE.”
***
“With the Leafs?!” Kasha was shocked when Aberdeen told her.  She’d started pouring glasses of wine when Aberdeen told her she got a job, but once she revealed the specifics, Kasha was shocked.  “Gosh Aberdeen, remember when my dad would bring me, you, and Siena to games with the company season tickets?”
“I know.”
“And now you’re working for them?!”
“For the President.  I’m his personal assistant.”
“Oh my God!” Kasha exclaimed.  “Seriously though, I bet a million jocks would kill for that job,” she commented as she finished pouring the wine.
“Yeah.  Great,” Aberdeen shrugged her shoulders.  “Thing is, I’m not one of them.”
“Well, you gotta start somewhere, right?” Kasha offered.  She picked up both wine glasses, handing one to Aberdeen.  Kasha held her glass up.  “To jobs that pay the rent.”
Aberdeen giggled.  “To jobs that pay the rent.”

What’s wrong with Rochester Sports?
Tumblr media
Of all the questions I ask blogging this is one that is closest to my heart. For the last several years this question has been asked in different words by many people in Rochester and her orbit. This line of questioning arises from a few factors, not least of them being the thinning down of the number of sports teams in the City in recent years. We had a lot of sports teams for a mid-sized City. Now we’re losing some. The Rochester Rattlers (outdoor Lacrosse) moved out of town, the Western New York Flash (professional women’s outdoor soccer) moved out of town almost five years ago, the Rochester Knighthawks (indoor lacrosse) are going through a bit of a cup trick, and the Rochester Rhinos (professional men’s outdoor soccer) went on hiatus and left their relatively new stadium after a decade in attendance decline and lease disputes with the City.
I have been critical of those in my home City insisting Rochester has lost her “Sports Mojo”, in part because that is an easy way of encapsulating three dozen variables into an answer that really doesn’t mean anything. However, the more I look into it the simpler it seems to become. In the examples I provided two are the results of dispassionate ownership (the Flash and Knighthawks) and the other two are the result of fan attendance’ steady decline over several years. The situations are all unique enough to not be encapsulated by “Sports Mojo” but the idea something is up with Rochester in particular seems credible at the surface. Blaming the fans for any problem in sports is always the least neaunced answer. It’s often the kiss of death. So how can we say there is a problem with Rochester in particular beyond the more obvious observations of bad ownership or attendance problems? This tact of refusing the premise is where I sat on it for a while.  Then the County Executive tweeted.
Whatever you think of Cheryl Dinolfo aside, she shared something that got me thinking. She tweeted a link to a Bloomberg article that put places like Syracuse, NY and Rochester in the top twenty in destinations for Millennials to find work. I’m a millennial and for years I’ve watched folks my age heading south and elsewhere for work after graduating college. It’s mainly teachers and other helping professions but certainly many others have left as well. I’ve seen the story repeat itself over and over. Dinolfo’s retweet was obviously politically fodder but it points to rays of light breaking through that youth diaspora trend we’ve been used to for a couple decades here. Depopulation here skews towards younger people and as a region, we export college graduates if you haven’t noticed. The rays of light the Bloomberg article referenced got me thinking a new way about Rochester’s sports woes in recent years.
I went to a Rochester Americans playoff game last month. My dad had got these wicked second row seats by the team benches and my wife and I had redesigned my Captain America shield for what was surely to be a deep playoff run by our hometown hockey team. It was not a deep run and my shield was not exactly welcome at that fateful Game One. Not by security, I had it throughout the game at my seat; no, it wasn’t welcome because a woman sitting behind me gave me an earful about how it was nice, but it obstructed her vision and I had to keep it down. Ok, I’m not an asshole, I kept it down. Later in the game, that same woman did her best shrieking-Indian cheer, her words not mine, and I thought to myself: something is backwards here. All the research and first-hand experience with this problem in Rochester sports came flooding back with some clarity now.
Demographics has a part to play in Rochester’s sports woes. The woman behind me was well over 60 and spoke of her affection for the St. Paul street area of North Rochester/Irondequoit but vocalized how much its “gone downhill” over the years. The discussion of specific sections of Rochester aside, there is a generational imbalance going on in Rochester Sports that I think goes unspoken more often than not. I’m sure the woman sitting behind me is a wonderful lady and has many great memories cheering on the Amerks, Red Wings, and maybe even the Rhinos; but older adults aren’t what drives a sports team’s crucial numbers. Yes, they have the disposable income to help but successful sports teams these days pull in a cross-section of the public skewing towards the crazy folks who want to yell and scream. I’m not saying older folks like the woman behind me don’t yell and scream, trust me they do, but there is clearly an imbalance in this equation; particularly with the teams still in town making it work.
Hold your horses, I’m not trying to single out any groups or individuals with this criticism. I am not here to write an ageist think piece on how boomers are ruining Rochester sports. Although that would be hilarious given the surplus of pieces written about how millennials are ruining everything because they think they’re so darn special! No, I think there is a more stylistic change slowly unfolding. It has a lot more to do with how sports are marketed. I am no sports management or marketing expert but there are some huge differences between the leagues and teams hitting it big these days and the ones atrophying and folding. The difference is how you talk about what you’re building… and also what that product is meant to do.
Credit where credit is due, the Red Wings are doing a great job pulling in a cross section of Rochester’s little piece of humanity. The Rochester Rhinos on the other hand are in dire straights right now in large part because of the push they made for MLS in the early 2000s. Crowds packed Frontier Field and even Sahlen’s Stadium in its early days because we all wanted to be a part of the first Rochester sports team going top-flight since the early 1950s; not to mention they were just a really friggin good team back then! When that didn’t happen, the crowds dispersed. The Rochester Americans were world-beaters for four decades before they fell off the banner-raising beat, and the crowds have been tepid in the years since. These two teams are a case study in what’s going on in Rochester sports: failed expectations and a lot of them. Failed expectations lead to mediocre interest which leads to lack of coverage which leads to poor recruitment of young, new fans. It becomes a vicious cycle.
You have to be what you tell you’re fans you are going to be. Of course, I don’t fault the Rhinos for not making MLS nor do I fault the Amerks for not winning three championships a decade like they did fifty years ago but the point remains the same: tell the people what they’re getting and get them excited about that. To the Rochester Americans’ credit, they’ve bounced back to some degree. Crowds can be slim some nights but for the most part the averages have returned to an acceptable level. The Rhinos have not had the same recovery but there is potential for them to do so. There is more to this than butts-in-seats though, right? Yes, the king of Rochester Sports teams has this next part nailed down – and that’s kind of funny considering they’re the oldest club in the City.
The aforementioned Rochester Red Wings Baseball Club, or at least their marketing department, has a handle on something Rochester teams have been struggling to catch up with: online engagement. That may seem of negligible importance but that’s why I made the attendance/expectations point first. The Red Wings have put on a master class in how to keep your supporters thinking about your team even when its not playing. Two years ago, the Red Wings did a brilliant promotion focused on Rochester that is uniquely baseball but still something to be emulated: The Rochester Plates! So, if you’re not familiar with Rochester, there is this dish called the garbage plate. There is a number of foods that can go on a garbage plate but nonetheless its one of those things that makes Rochester unique and as a born and raised Rochesterian I will defend the dish to my last breath! The Red Wings, Rochester’s oldest professional team of any kind, made several promotional nights, jerseys and a whole line of merchandise out of the Plates. It was just a chef’s kiss, brilliant!
That kind of thing emphasizes the uniqueness of a town and local fans love to get behind it. You cheer for where you’re from and garbage plates are where I’m from. That is the sports marketing of the future. The Rochester Americans have caught on and added more themed nights and promotions that really scream Rochester. I could do without the Blue Collar Built tagline, but beggars can’t be choosers. Speaking of the future, I would be remised to not bring up the third piece here that needs to be said: the changing way sports teams are covered. This one is going to be a little bit meaner so bear with me because I think this is a conversation we need to have. While some folks have complained about how no one leaves their houses anymore because of how many entertainment options are out their Soccer Sam Fantauzzo, the same guy who yells about pizza for a living, managed to pull 3000+ into the Dome Arena this past winter for… wait for it… indoor soccer! The local maestro of vaguely irritating promotions got 3000 men, women and children to leave their homes in the dead of winter, at night, to drive down to Henrietta for indoor soccer. Nothing against indoor soccer but the argument no one will consume local sports anymore doesn’t hold water. Period. It doesn’t. I say that as preface to what I’m about to say.
The Democrat and Chronicle abandoning Pro Sports coverage is shameful. A handful of writers at that paper have defended their dramatic pairing down of all local Pro Sports coverage online for the most legitimate reason anyone arguing with nameless twitter eggs can: money. Apparently the coverage of the Red Wings, Americans and Rhinos just wasn’t getting the clicks and therefore wasn’t lucrative enough for ad revenue. That would be a great argument if it weren’t so lazy. Before I go off listing the numerous sports blogs that are growing into lucrative businesses just in upstate New York, it’s worth pointing out priorities. The guys I’m grilling at the D&C right now are probably facing cuts no matter what. I’d rather that paper cut sports than something far more important like investigative journalism. That’s actually important in the real world so let me just place that disclaimer. However, this is a sports blog and not covering sports in this City, arguably the best minor sports City in America, is pretty awful.
What makes it so awful is the trend it sets. After the D&C gave up you could see the other local print sources and local broadcast networks pair down as well. In spite of print media’s decline nationwide, the sports section in most towns still has some power of influence in local media. Before Jeff DiVeronica left the D&C last year he was really making headway in my personal opinion with D&C Digital and the video pieces he was putting out. I don’t know the numbers, I didn’t see what they were doing in ad revenue, I’m not going to pretend I know the financially sustainability of that; but the vast strata of sports blogs arising from every corner of the sports world these days leads me to believe it can be done and excuses shouldn’t be made when it’s not getting done in a City as sports-hungry as Rochester, New York. Remember what we said at the beginning: blaming the fans is the kiss of death.
Those are my three points: a generational shift, a marketing shift and a coverage collapse. If there is something wrong with Rochester Sports there are probably a million little factors we can discuss but that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. I’m not writing a burn book; this article is meant to point out shortcomings as a means to growth but if you have something to talk about on this topic I genuinely want to hear from you. I hear a lot of anger when it comes to Rochester Sports and I don’t quite know why. If there was going to be a fourth item on this list anger might be it because holy crap when you say anything about this City in a public setting it seems like hordes of angry folks come yelling. If you have something to say about this please say it to me in a non-angry way. That’s a lot more helpful in having a productive conversation. If you do say it me angrily, well hey, it means you care and that would make two of us.

New Post has been published on https://www.stl.news/not-all-south-koreans-are-happy-about-unified-hockey-team/71642/
Not all South Koreans are happy about unified hockey team
SEOUL, South Korea /January 21, 2018 (AP)(STL.News) —South Koreans seem generally happy they’ll see the North Koreans at their Olympics, but aren’t as pleased about sharing a team with them.
The agreement between the war-separated rivals to field a unified women’s ice hockey team at February’s Winter Olympics has triggered a debate in South Korea, where there’s no longer strong public clamor for reunification or for using sports to make political statements.
South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who views the Pyeongchang Games as an opportunity to improve relations following a year of tension over North Korea’s nuclear weapons program, said the unified team would provide a “historically grand moment” once it appears on ice.
Other re-conciliatory gestures the Koreas have agreed to for the Olympics include a joint march under a blue-and-white “unification” flag during the Feb. 9 opening ceremony and a pair of performances by a visiting North Korean art troupe. The joint march and the unified hockey team were approved Saturday by the International Olympic Committee, which allowed 22 North Korean athletes to take part in the games in exceptional entries given to the North.
Not all South Koreans are in the mood. There are apparently few objections to the North Korean presence at the Olympics itself, which likely ensures that the country holds off any significant weapons test or other aggressive acts that would risk disrupting the games.
Many South Koreans believe their government went too far by pushing athletes into a “political show” that will likely become meaningless once the lull in tensions breaks down after the Olympics.
Kim Hye-jin, a 39-year-old music instructor, said that South Korea was repeating an “outdated approach” in using sports diplomacy. She said that the previous unified teams and joint marches between the rivals never paved the way for sustained, meaningful engagement.
“We are always repeating meaningless things and North Korea isn’t a country that will change easily,” she said.
Plus, she said, a unified team takes away opportunities from South Korean athletes who have been working hard to prepare for the Olympics.
Heo Doo-won, a 40-year-old teacher, didn’t care for the reconciliatory gestures at all.
“Why are we doing this?” he asked. “We are clearly two different countries and it’s better if things stay that way. I don’t want a unified team or a unification flag. Why can’t we just let the North Koreans march under their own flag?”
While the liberal Moon remains a popular president nine months into his term, the controversy over the hockey team factored in his approval rating dipping below 70 percent for the first time in four months, according to a Gallup Korea report on Friday.
Many people sympathize with the South Korean athletes who would likely be sacrificing opportunities for the North’s players, who are considered less skilled and experienced. The IOC approved an expanded roster of 35 instead of 22 for the joint team, but only the normal number will be allowed to suit up for each game and three of them must be North Korean.
The South Korean team’s Canadian coach, Sarah Murray, has expressed concerns over chemistry.
“Adding somebody so close to the Olympics is a little bit dangerous just for team chemistry because the girls have been together for so long,” she said last week.
Choi Hyuk, a 40-year-old office worker, blamed the government for failing to properly communicate with the players and for excessively politicizing sports.
Choi pointed to the comments of Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon, who was forced to apologize after saying that the South Korean women’s hockey team was out of “medal range” anyway while defending the government’s decision to create the unified team.
“South Korea’s elite sports have always been based on nationalism,” Choi said, referring to a decades-long system that rewards Olympic medal winners with lifelong cash payments and exemption from military duties that are mandatory for most able-bodied men.
“Isn’t it funny that the same country is now asking athletes to cut back on their playing time and embrace changes that would make them less likely to win?”
The reconciliation mood between the Koreas began after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said in a New Year’s speech that he was willing to send a delegation to the Olympics.
Some experts view Kim’s overture as an attempt to weaken U.S.-led international sanctions against the North and buy time to further advance his nuclear weapons program. Last year, North Korea carried out its sixth and biggest nuclear test and test-fired three intercontinental ballistic missiles. It has shown no willingness to give up its ambitions.
Still, many experts think Moon’s government made the right move in jumping at the opportunity to resume contact with North Korea after nearly two years of diplomatic stalemate and animosity.
In an annual policy report on Friday, South Korea’s Unification Ministry said it aims to use the Olympics as an opportunity to re-establish regular dialogue with North Korea. The resumption of inter-Korean talks is crucial for the policies of Moon, who wants Seoul in the driver’s seat in international efforts to deal with the North Korean nuclear threat.
The Koreas sent joint teams to major international sporting events twice in 1991, and had their athletes march together in the opening and closing ceremonies of several sporting events in the 2000s, including the 2000 Sydney Summer Olympics.
While the previous moves had little diplomatic impact, similar gestures would carry more meaning in an Olympics held on South Korean soil and amid higher stakes in regional security, said Yongchul Chung, a sports education professor at Seoul’s Sogang University.
“Fielding a unified team is very meaningful — the biggest fruit that can come from the Pyeongchang Olympics is a message of peace between the Koreas,” Chung said. “It’s not like the players wouldn’t understand the historic significance of what they are involved in.”
But it has become harder to get South Koreans excited for unified teams and joint marches when North Korea’s increasingly aggressive weapons tests and the South’s own evolvement as an economy and society continue to erode the public’s enthusiasm for reunification.
In a survey of 1,200 adults released by Seoul National University in October, 53.8 percent of the respondents said they supported the idea of reunification. This represented a steep drop from the 63.8 percent measured in 2007, when the school started the annual survey.
“I think it will be emotionally moving to watch the athletes of both Koreas march under the same flag during the opening ceremony as we come from the same nation,” said Oh Ju-yeon, a 46-year-old housewife. “But after the games, there will be bitterness from realizing that nothing’s really going to change.”

Mic has included gaming in earnest for less than a yr, However, gaming drew more than 6 million readers in March, compared with 17 million that came to Mic’s owned and operated websites in March, per comScore.
Similarly to set up games courses, Mic joins different trendy-interest and different mission-subsidized publishers which are protecting gaming as a part of their pop culture insurance. “There may be the antique protect (IGN and GameSpot) and the new recreation insurance by using media who is masking an expansion of cultural/pop subjects and are increasingly making gaming part of it,” said Dario Raciti, the U.S. Director of Zero Code, the gaming group inside media organization OMD. “We see everybody from The The big apple Times to Vice and Forbes starting to cover video games.”

Game and the Russian Revolution
New Post has been published on https://beingmad.org/game-and-the-russian-revolution/
Game and the Russian Revolution
“Human beings will divide into “parties” over the question of a new tremendous canal, or the distribution of cases inside the Sahara (any such question will exist too), over the law of the climate and the climate, over a new theatre, over chemical hypotheses, over competing inclinations in track, and over a satisfactory gadget of sports.” – Leon Trotsky, Literature and Revolution
At the start of the 20th century, Sport had not flourished in Russia to the same volume as in nations together with Britain. Most people of the Russian population have been peasants, spending hours each day on back-breaking agricultural labor. Amusement time became difficult to come by means of and even then Human beings had been often exhausted from their work. Of route Human beings did still play, taking part in such conventional games as lap (just like baseball) and gorodki (a bowling sport). A smattering of sports activities clubs existed in the large towns but they remained the preserve of the richer contributors of society. Ice hockey changed into beginning to grow in reputation, and the higher echelons of society have been fond of fencing and rowing, using high-priced gadget most of the people would never be able to afford.
In 1917 the Russian Revolution games grew to become the sector the other way up, inspiring hundreds of thousands of Human beings with its imaginative and prescient of a society constructed on unity and the fulfillment of human need. inside the process, it unleashed an explosion of creativity in art, song, poetry and literature. It touched each location of People’s lives, together with the video games they performed. Sport, however, turned into far from being a concern. The Bolsheviks, who had led the revolution, had been confronted with civil battle, invading armies, sizable famine and a typhus epidemic. Survival, now not Amusement, become the order of the day. however, all through the early part of the Twenties, before the desires of the revolution have been beaten through Stalin, the controversy over a “great system of sports” that Trotsky had anticipated did indeed take place. two of the businesses to tackle the question of “physical lifestyle” had been the hygienists and the Proletkultists.
Hygienists As the call implies the hygienists had been a group of doctors and health care professionals whose attitudes had been informed by means of their clinical knowledge. Usually talking they had been essential to Sport, worried that its emphasis on competition positioned members vulnerable to damage. They were equally disdainful of the West’s preoccupation with running quicker, throwing similarly or jumping higher than ever before. “It’s miles absolutely useless and unimportant,” said A.A. Zikmund, head of the bodily culture Institute in Moscow, “that all and sundry set a new global or Russian report.” As a substitute, the hygienists recommended non-competitive physical interests – like gymnastics and swimming -as ways for Human beings to stay healthful and loosen up.
For a time period, the hygienists influenced Soviet policy on questions of bodily lifestyle. It changed into on their recommendation that certain sports have been prohibited, and football, boxing and weight-lifting were all overlooked from the program of occasions at the first Trade Union video play games mes in 1925. But the hygienists have been ways from unanimous of their condemnation of Sport. V.V. Gorinevsky, for example, changed into an advise of gambling tennis which he saw as being a really perfect physical exercising. Nikolai Semashko, a doctor and the Humans’ Commissar for health, went much, in addition, arguing that Recreation changed into “the open gate to bodily tradition” which “develops the type of will-electricity, power, and skill that ought to distinguish Soviet Human beings.”
Proletkult In comparison to the hygienists, the Proletkult movement turned into unequivocal in its rejection of ‘bourgeois’ Sport. indeed they denounced something that smacked of the antique society, be it in art, literature or song. They noticed the ideology of capitalism woven into the cloth of play games . Its competitiveness set workers towards each different, dividing Human beings with the aid of tribal and national identities, at the same time as the physicality of the games put unnatural lines at our bodies of the players.
In the vicinity of Sports Proletkultists argued for brand spanking new, proletarian sorts of play, based on the concepts of mass participation and cooperation. regularly these new play games have been massive theatrical presentations searching greater like carnivals or parades than the sports we see nowadays. Contests have been shunned on the premise that they were ideologically incompatible with the brand new socialist society. Participation replaced spectating, and each event contained a distinct political message, as is obvious from some of their names: Rescue from the Imperialists; Smuggling Revolutionary Literature Throughout the Frontier; and Helping the Proletarians.
Bolsheviks It might be easy to characterize the Bolsheviks as being anti-sports. Leading members of the celebration had been pals and comrades with folks who were most critical of play games at some stage in the debates on bodily subculture. some of the Leading hygienists have been close to Leon Trotsky, at the same time as Anatoli Lunacharsky, the Commissar for the Enlightenment, shared many views with Proletkult. Similarly, the birthday party’s mindset to the Olympics is commonly given as proof to assist this anti-Game claim. The Bolsheviks boycotted the games arguing that they “deflect people from the magnificence warfare and educate them for imperialist wars”. Yet in reality, the Bolshevik’s attitudes in the direction of Recreation have been extremely extra complicated.
It’s far clear that that they regarded participation inside the new bodily culture as being especially crucial, a existence-declaring hobby allowing People to experience the freedom and motion in their personal our bodies. Lenin became convinced that activity and exercising had been necessary parts of a well-rounded life. “Young People mainly want to have a zest for life and be in right spirits. healthy play games- gymnastics, swimming, trekking all way of bodily exercising – must be mixed as a great deal as possible with a ramification of intellectual interests, examine, evaluation and research… wholesome bodies, healthful minds!”
Unsurprisingly, in the aftermath of the revolution, Recreation could play a political position for the Bolsheviks. Facing inner and external threats which could decimate the running class, they saw Sport as a way with the aid of which the health and health of the populace might be improved. As early as 1918 they issued a decree, On Obligatory Training within the Navy artwork, introducing physical education to the education machine.
This tension between the ideals of a future physical tradition and the pressing issues of the day have been evident in a resolution surpassed via the Third All-Russia Congress of the Russian Younger Communist League in October 1920:
“The bodily lifestyle of the younger technology is a vital element in the common device of the communist upbringing of Young People, aimed at creating harmoniously developed human beings, innovative residents of communist society. today bodily subculture additionally has direct sensible aims: (1) preparing Young People for paintings; and (2) making ready them for Navy defense of Soviet power.”
Recreation would also play a function in other regions of political work. Prior to the revolution the liberal educationalist Peter Lesgaft noted that “social servitude has left its degrading imprint on girls. Our challenge is to loose the woman frame of its fetters”. Now the Bolsheviks attempted to place his thoughts into exercise. The location of ladies in society had already been greatly stepped forward through the legalization of abortion and divorce, but Sport may also play a position by means of an increasing number of bringing ladies into public existence. “It’s miles our pressing mission to attract women into Sport,” said Lenin. “If we can attain that and get them to make complete use of the sun, water and sparkling air for fortifying themselves, we shall deliver an entire revolution inside the Russian manner of life.”
And Sport became another way of conveying the beliefs of the revolution to the running training of Europe. The employee-Recreation motion stretched Across the continent and tens of millions of people had been contributors of sports golf equipment run specially by reformist establishments. The Red sports activities International (RSI) changed into shaped in 1921 with the specific purpose of connecting with these people. through the subsequent decade the RSI (and the reformist Socialist worker sports Global) held a number of Spartakiads and employee Olympics in competition to the professional Olympic video play games . employee-athletes from Across the globe could come together to participate in a whole range of events consisting of processions, poetry, artwork and aggressive Game. There has been not one of the discrimination that marred the ‘proper’ Olympics. Ladies and men of all hues had been eligible to participate irrespective of capacity. The effects have been very an awful lot of secondary importance.
So, were the Bolsheviks anti-Recreation? They actually did not seem to move as far as Proletkult’s fervent ideological competition and, as we’ve got seen, have been organized to utilise play games in the pursuit of wider political dreams. No doubt there had been many person Bolsheviks who despised sports. similarly many will have greatly enjoyed them. indeed, Because the British spy Robert Bruce Lockhart determined, Lenin himself became a keen sportsman: “From boyhood he had been fond of shooting and skating. Continually a excellent walker, he became a eager mountaineer, a lively cyclist, and an impatient fisherman.” Lunacharsky, in spite of his affiliation with Proletkult, extolled the virtues of both rugby union and boxing, rarely the most benign of current sports.
This isn’t to mention that the celebration was uncritical of ‘bourgeois’ Recreation. It’s far clear that they tackled the worst excesses of Game underneath capitalism. The emphasis on competition changed into eliminated, the contest that risked severe injury to the contributors turned into banned, the flag-waving nationalist trappings endemic to modern Sport disappeared, and the video games Humans performed have been not dealt with as commodities. But the Bolsheviks had been in no way overly prescriptive of their analysis of what physical way of life ought to appear like.
The position of the Bolsheviks in the one’s early days is perhaps excellent summarized by means of Trotsky within the quote that opens this bankruptcy. It became not for the birthday party to decide what constituted the “first-class device of sports activities” or produce the precise line for the running elegance to observe. As an alternative, it was for the mass of Humans to discuss and debate, experiment and innovate, and in that procedure create their very own sports activities and play games . Nobody should foresee precisely what the play of a future socialist society could be like, however, similarly no person ought to doubt that the want to play would assert itself. As Trotsky said, “The longing for enjoyment, distraction, sight-seeing, and laughter is the most legitimate of human nature.”
Stalinism The hopes of the revolution died, along hundreds of old Bolsheviks, with the upward thrust of Josef Stalin. The collectivist ideals of 1917 were buried, changed by using exploitation and brutal repression. Internationalism was jettisoned in favor of “socialism in a single use”. Because the values and imperatives of the society changed so too did the character of the united states of America’s physical lifestyle. by means of 1925, the Bolsheviks had already turned towards an extra elitist version of Recreation. Around this time Stalin is said to have said: “We compete with the bourgeoisie economically, politically, and no longer without achievement. We compete anywhere feasible. Why not compete in Sport?” Crew sports reappeared, complete with a capitalist-style league and cup structures. A success sportspeople have been held up as heroes inside the Soviet Union and the quest for facts resumed. Most of the hygienists and Proletkultists who had dared to dream of recent types of bodily tradition perished in the purges.
Subsequently, Recreation became a proxy for the Cold battle. In 1952 the Soviet Union became re-integrated into the Olympic motion ensuring that the metal desk at every game became a measure of the relative electricity of East and West. Because the united states of America became inexorably compelled into financial, political and Navy opposition at the International stage, so it also found itself drawn into wearing competition with the West.
Just as It’d be a mistake to judge the ideals of the Russian Revolution by using the horrors of Stalinism, so we ought to no longer allow the latter days of Soviet play games to difficult to understand those superb early experiments in bodily culture. play games in Russia can also have ended as a steroid more advantageous cool animated film, but how a long way eliminated that become from the vision of Lenin whilst he said: “Younger Women and men of the Soviet land ought to stay existence beautifully and to the total in public and personal life. Wrestling, work, study, play games , making merry, making a song, dreaming – these are matters Younger Humans ought to make the most of.”

Women's Hockey Notebook: Meghan Duggan Q&A; USWNT news; Men's team boycott?
Tumblr media
Courtesy of Women’s Hockey Life
Puck Daddy had the opportunity to interview US Women’s National Team (USWNT) captain Meghan Duggan on the team’s boycott of the upcoming World Championship.
The Q&A with Duggan goes through a majority of the topics to come to light in the past week and a half.
We’re going to do something a bit different.
There has been an amazing amount of reporting on the negotiations. At the end of most of Duggan’s answers, we’ve added links to further reading on the subject covered. It doesn’t encompass everything written but it hits on a lot.
PUCK DADDY: How are you? What’s the last week and a half been like for you?
MEGHAN DUGGAN: I’m good, I’m good. It’s certainly been busy as everyone has been seeing and following in the media. Definitely a lot going on on our end, but I’m confident. Proud of my team and everyone that’s been involved.
It’s been a united group and a really strong group from the start, and that’s the only reason why we’ve been able to, I think, take this stand. It’s because we’re all in this together and been leaning on each other throughout the entire thing and communicating very well and so, yeah, it’s good.

The team did a social media blast on Friday morning (see above). Why did you choose ‘limitless’ as your word?
DUGGAN: I love the word. I think it means a lot internally to us as players, our team and our program. I think that, in this day and age, everyone, regardless of gender, or anything else, it shouldn’t put limits on themselves, and that’s what we’re doing right now.
There shouldn’t be limits on women in terms of their equitable support in relation to men in any organization or any employment opportunity. We talk a lot about being ‘limitless’ in our program in terms of types of things we’re trying to achieve as players, and I think this falls right into that category.

Can you give readers what life like for a post-college women’s hockey player who is in the National Team system?
DUGGAN: It’s different for everyone, obviously, and how they choose to balance their life and their financial needs and outside career path with their training and preparation for the National Team.
First of all, to stay with the National Team, to keep making that roster, to keep getting invited to those training camps and major [International Ice Hockey Federation] tournaments and to be a part of a team is a 365 day a year job without question. The National Team in all of our eyes, how passionate we are about it and what it takes to remain on that team. It dictates where we live, what we do every day, what we eat, how much sleep we get, who we interact with, and exactly what our days are like every day. And that’s just what it takes to stay on that team.
Everyone on our team does something else at this point, as a post-grad player, to help support themselves financially.
A lot of girls balance a full-time job. I, myself, the last two seasons had a coaching job in the NCAA. That was full-time in addition to my training. This year I stepped away from that job just solely to focus one hundred more on my training because it was certainly a lot to juggle in those other two years.
But even with myself stepping away from that job, and any of the other girls that don’t have full-time jobs, there’s tons of part-time things we have to pick up; whether it’s private lessons or speaking events, pretty much doing everything we can to supplement and to help us out from a financial basis.
There’s a lot of girls that rely on their parents for certain things; rely on their spouses or significant others for certain things, but there’s not one overall path that everyone once they graduate college, but you’ve got to start thinking about other things and how to make ends meet once you leave that glorious NCAA blanket.
• Women’s U.S. hockey players want to sit in business class, not coach (terrible headline, but informative read). [CNN Money]
The initial comparison is what the US team has versus Hockey Canada. They get a lot of government funding, though. How did the National Team formulate their demands?
DUGGAN: We did a lot of research in a lot of different areas before we went into this. It isn’t something we came to overnight. There was a lot conversations and fact checking and things like that, and we understand and know some of the elements and things that go along with Hockey Canada and how they run their program, but to be honest, I think we’re just focused on us.
This and our communication with each other and how we understand it, and what we think is important as American women. This fight and this battle doesn’t have anything to do with the Hockey Canada girls. For us I think we feel like what we have asked for is certainly appropriate for American players, female American players in this program.

The negotiations have been going on for the past year and half. Why announce your stance and the boycott two and a half weeks before Worlds?
DUGGAN: I wish a year and a half or a year ago we were able to come to an agreement on these terms. But in all the meetings that we had and the back and forth with USA Hockey we weren’t making any progress. Negotiations were at a standstill, and we got to the point last week where we felt that we had to take the next step, and it was a crucial next step.
The last thing that we would ever want to do is sacrifice a world championship, a defense of a gold medal on home soil, and I don’t think that people realize, maybe, how difficult it is for us to put that on the line. We’ve trained for it all year, but, at the same time, I think it shows how important this is to our program. How important this is to the future of USA Hockey on the women’s side and how passionate we are about it.
I think it’s the right time for a ton of reasons, and certainly proud to be doing it right now.
• How female athletes can help advance the fight for fair pay. [Time] • Women have already beaten USA Hockey at bargaining table. [USA Today] • US Women’s National Team demands better from USA Hockey. [Victory Press] • USA Hockey’s ignorant, misguided response to USWNT boycott. [Puck Daddy]
Can you explain why the boycott is about “more than just the money”?
DUGGAN: We’ve spoken from day one about how compensation is a piece of it. The other areas are in terms of programming and us wanting to play more games.
The comparison [used] is the [US National Development Team] program playing sixty game a season, where our team, in a non-Olympic year, plays nine. We want to play more games.
Then also just the marketing and PR and promotional aspects of our team. You saw the example of the jerseys before the 2014 Olympics. The women, from a marketing and PR and communications standpoint, are an afterthought, for lack of a better term.
One of the biggest parts of this movement is we, as women who have been involved in this program a long time, feel that it is necessary that the culture and mindset change within the USA Hockey higher-ups needs to change in regards to how they respect and treat and value the women in this program. That to me is more important than anything.
I think with all of those areas, the compensation piece, all the other proposed terms that we’ve talked about, in terms of injury and pregnancy and travel, staffing, meals, guest funds, things like that, they’ve really shown the women are an afterthought.
The biggest piece to me, and to the rest of the team, I think is getting across to them is that it’s 2017, and we’re not going to be underestimated anymore. We don’t want to be an afterthought. This is important for the young girls and the future of this program that these things change.

In USA Hockey’s statement prior to in-person negotiations on Monday, they made special mention about childcare. Can you go into the request for maternity leave coverage and how having a child impacts a female professional athlete differently?
DUGGAN: There are some of us that have been around for ten years and are getting close to thirty. Jocelyne Lamoreux said it pretty well: time and time again we shouldn’t have to choose between between continuing and playing hockey, doing what we love and representing USA Hockey, and having a family.
There’s a lot of players on the team that, in their near future, are marriage and kids and things like that, but don’t want to feel like they have to give up hockey and our love for this game and representing our country at the Olympics for that. Men often don’t have to choose, when you look at it on that side.
I think for us, just having something in place, from a pregnancy standpoint within USA Hockey, it just hasn’t been something that’s been talked about. It hasn’t been a major issue in the past few years because we don’t have anyone on the team, aside from Jenny Potter 10 to 12 years ago that had a child while still playing, but it is something that I think we as players feel that, for the future of this program there needs to be a policy in place.
It was nothing like there needs to be a specific maternity leave, but we wanted to start the conversation with USA Hockey about should a player become pregnant, now what? What is USA Hockey’s obligation to that [player] if the player wants to continue playing, how do we deal with that financially? Is there a daycare and a nanny support after the player has the baby and now wants to come back?
It’s a lot of that stuff we wanted to start the conversation and have that talk with them about that.
Does that include holding a spot on the roster?
DUGGAN: That’s certainly a part of it. We talked about upon the players return she has the opportunity to, after medical clearance, have the opportunity to be invited back to the next one or two training camps.
Of course, within any national program, you still have to prove yourself. This is so that there’s no pregnancy discrimination and [players] are given an opportunity to come back once cleared medically. I think we put it at no less than two training camps.

CNN Money reported USA Hockey doesn’t provide disability insurance. Is that correct?
DUGGAN: The insurance portion is a little bit difficult to understand. Those are some of the things we’re still currently discussing with them from an injury protection and worker’s compensation and all that standpoint.
It’s difficult to give an exact answer because USA Hockey doesn’t see us as employees. They’ve made that very clear. They don’t want to “employ” the players. So, in terms of disability and worker’s comp and a lot of that is kind of an interesting line there.
Has the IIHF, United States Olympic Committee (USOC), or International Olympic Committee (IOC) weighed in or spoken to the team at all?
DUGGAN: Not that I’m aware of.
• USA Hockey’s plan for replacements raises questions about anti-doping protocols. [USA Today]
You’re featured in a Dunkin’ Donuts commercial wearing a Team USA jersey. Have you or anyone on the team heard from sponsors?
DUGGAN: Not that I’m aware of, but people I’ve been involved with, that I know from a sponsorship standpoint, I would not be surprised if they are reaching out to USA Hockey and putting the pressure on them a little bit.
I would love to think that they are. There’s a lot of unbelievable people who sponsor women’s hockey, and put money into it because they believe in the product and so do we.
I think ultimately this is about wanting the higher-ups at USA Hockey to believe in this product. I would hope that they are. I haven’t heard any specifics as of late.

You’re ‘Captain America.’ Do you feel added responsibility to be out front for this movement?
DUGGAN: Our entire group is unified. We’ve had discussions with the whole Worlds team, the [USA Hockey] player pool, the U-18 team. We’ve been working through this together.
As captain, and as one of the veteran players, it’s important to me. I’m passionate about speaking up. I’m proud to be leading the charge alongside all of my teammates.
Our core leadership group has been absolutely fantastic. In the initial press release that went out last Wednesday, there were five names: myself, Hilary [Knight], the Lamoureux twins [Jocelyn and Monique], and Kacey Bellamy who were going to be available for press and media and comments and things like that. Everyone has heard our voices more than the rest of the team, but I can say with one hundred percent confidence that we’re in communication with our team all the time.
Everything we say is on behalf of team, and the communication piece has been the biggest part of why this is going to be successful. We constantly ask the girls ‘is there anyone that feels they need to say anything for themselves? Do we want to continue with a few of us speaking on behalf of the team?’ And [the answers are] ‘we’re good with that, and we’re going to continue that way.’
Anything that comes out of any of our mouths is a clear indication of how the team feels.
Finally, if I were a little girl playing on an all boys team, what would you tell me about why the National Team is doing what they’re doing?
DUGGAN: I would say: this fight is for you. Women are amazing. Be proud to be one. Keep playing, stand up for yourself because this is for you.
We want to be the change and we want to make the change women’s sports in this country.
This is for you.

USA Hockey has made it clear they want to play Worlds with the initial roster named to the tournament. However, they’ve also indicated that they will be reaching out to other players in order to secure a roster to play.
At the time, we wrote this was a major tipping point for women who play hockey and are within the USA Hockey grasp. Any player that crossed the picket line would draw a serious blow to the movement and their future career.
According to Puck Daddy’s Greg Wyshynski, it’s not going well.
Source close to USWNT tells me that USA Hockey is now “contacting D3 and HS players” as Plan B for women’s worlds.
— Greg Wyshynski (@wyshynski) March 25, 2017
Yes, USA Hockey is so desperate that they’re reaching out to HIGH SCHOOL PLAYERS to go against the likes of Marie-Philip Poulin and Team Canada.
Not only is this desperate, it’s incredibly dangerous. If Duggan is correct and the players aren’t fully insured as is, the risk goes up significantly when putting kids on the ice against the best women’s hockey players in the world.
On Twitter, those approached to play are posting tweets with a modified Jerry Rice quote to show they’ve turned down the offer. The list continues to grow each day.

None of the statements issued by players thus far have included any sort threat (for lack of a better term) to USA Hockey. Support, yes. Something that would make USA Hockey get super serious, super fast? No.
Allies in this fight are welcomed in any way. A movement of this magnitude by the Men’s Team means far more than any 140 character post.
Side note: One group you will definitely not see get involved is the NHL. They do give money to USA Hockey for grassroots growth, but don’t stipulate how USA Hockey should use the money. It’s all part of the collective bargaining agreement.

New Post has been published on https://www.madpicks.com/sports/soccer/mls-scores-week-2-alejandro-bedoya-and-jozy-altidore-dissed-each-other-or-didnt-who-knows/
MLS scores, Week 2: Alejandro Bedoya and Jozy Altidore dissed each other. Or didn’t. Who knows?
There was a ton of great soccer on display during Week 2 in MLS. Also some USMNT players insulted each other, then quickly walked back their insults. Great timing! The United States men’s national team plays a crucial World Cup qualifier in just two weeks.
If USMNT drama isn’t your thing, there was plenty of other intrigue around MLS. Galaxy captain Jelle Van Damme was undeservedly sent off, and Portland’s David Guzman could get suspended for diving to draw his second yellow. NYCFC and Atlanta delivered beatdowns to D.C. United and Minnesota, respectively. Houston and San Jose continued to impress, despite preseason predictions that they’d struggle.
But we have to start with the Bedoya-Altidore spat, don’t we?
Saturday’s games
Chicago Fire 2-0 Real Salt Lake New York Red Bulls 1-0 Colorado Rapids Philadelphia Union 2-2 Toronto FC Montreal Impact 2-2 Seattle Sounders Houston Dynamo 3-1 Columbus Crew SC Sporting Kansas City 0-0 FC Dallas San Jose Earthquakes 3-2 Vancouver Whitecaps
Sunday’s games
New York City FC 4-0 D.C. United Minnesota United 1-6 Atlanta United LA Galaxy 0-1 Portland Timbers
OK, let’s talk about this USMNT fighting/not fighting
The biggest story in MLS this weekend wasn’t about a result on the field. It was about whether or not Alejandro Bedoya meant to insult his USMNT teammate Jozy Altidore.
Altidore won a penalty for Toronto FC against the Philadelphia Union on Saturday, which Bedoya discussed with reporters after the match. This went poorly.
Bedoya on the foul leading to Toronto’s penalty: “Knowing Jozy, he tends to go down easy in the box, so let’s just leave it at that.”
— PantsBurnLegWound (@RohnJossi) March 12, 2017
Altidore was far from impressed with that comment and tweeted his displeasure (the tweet has since been deleted). Bedoya tried to smooth things over by saying that the quote Altidore saw was taken out of context.
It’s a shame quotes get taken out of context. All love man. Congrats on your goal and see you soon bro. https://t.co/jPMM5V0z9M
— Alejandro Bedoya (@AleBedoya17) March 12, 2017
Was it taken out of context? Well … kind of. Bedoya definitely had a smile on his face when he said it. It seems unlikely that he was mad, or 100 percent serious.
Here is @AleBedoya17 on the @JozyAltidore PK call. @PhilaUnion @torontofc #PHIvTOR #doop pic.twitter.com/UFPWn5f2LP
— 215pix (@215pix) March 12, 2017
But there are problems with Bedoya trying to walk back his comments. Given Altidore’s reaction, it’s clear that this is not an established inside joke between the two players. “You have a lot to say but never to anyone’s face” is not the kind of comment you make about someone you have a strong joking rapport with.
Second, shouldn’t Bedoya know better than to make comments like this? He’s 29 years old, eight seasons into his professional career. He’s been dealing with reporters for a while now. Rookies know how to give smart answers to reporters’ questions that don’t get themselves into trouble, but Bedoya couldn’t envision his comments blowing up the way they did?
If you’re thinking about calling a player a diver as a joke, and they’re not in the room, either explicitly say it’s a joke or don’t say it at all. This blowing up isn’t the media’s fault, it’s Bedoya’s.
NYCFC has some bite, and Maxi Moralez is just fine
To replace Frank Lampard in the offseason, New York City FC has added 5’3” Argentine playmaker Maxi Moralez as a Designated Player. He got bullied a little bit in NYCFC’s opener against Orlando City, but as he has in other leagues, Moralez appears to have adjusted to physical play just fine. He was arguably the best player on the pitch for the Blues against D.C. United, and this assist was his best play.
Who else?@Guaje7Villa makes it four for @NYCFC with his second goal of the day. #NYCvDC https://t.co/XsW3uO5y6N
— Major League Soccer (@MLS) March 12, 2017
Moralez also had a very nice hockey assist on David Villa’s first goal and got on the scoreboard himself.
Anyone concerned about NYCFC’s attack after they were shut out in Orlando can probably relax now. And if you want to watch all the highlights from their demolition of the Black and Red, they come highly recommended.
SNOW SOCCER!!! (Also Minnesota United is bad)
Y’all, Minnesota vs. Atlanta was so great. The Loons had to play their home opener on what was essentially a hockey rink, and it made for some wild play. Plus, there was this guy with a leaf blower.

— Total MLS (@TotalMLS) March 12, 2017
Unfortunately, the home fans did not leave happy. Atlanta hung six goals on the Loons, with Josef Martinez scoring a hat trick and Miguel Almiron dominating the match. Minnesota also lost goalkeeper John Alvbåge to a potentially serious leg injury.
We might get a diving suspension
LA Galaxy captain Jelle Van Damme was sent off in the first half of his team’s match against the Portland Timbers under dubious circumstances. He didn’t make contact with Portland’s David Guzman on the offense he received his second booking for, and that could be bad for Guzman. If the league’s disciplinary committee determines that Guzman took a dive, he could be suspended because it caused Van Damme to be sent off, which had a “material impact in the match.”
Wondering about what the DC’s guidelines are for dives? Here you go: pic.twitter.com/wZsZuVHmaR
— Stumptown Footy (@StumptownFooty) March 13, 2017
Portland will make the case that, while Guzman went down, he was not faking contact for the purpose of manipulating the official. I don’t know why I’m embedding this tweet by Timbers owner Merritt Paulson, since he’s a notorious tweet deleter, but here’s what he thinks.
@StumptownFooty Avoiding a tackle isnt a dive

MLS Live power rankings
This is not a ranking that has anything to do with how good a team is at soccer, which should be very clear based on who sits at No. 2. It’s simply about how likely you are to be entertained if you choose to watch their game on MLS Live.
Atlanta United
Minnesota United
Portland Timbers
Seattle Sounders
FC Dallas
Houston Dynamo
New York City FC
Toronto FC
New York Red Bulls
LA Galaxy
Orlando City
Vancouver Whitecaps
San Jose Earthquakes
Montreal Impact
Chicago Fire
Sporting Kansas City
Colorado Rapids
Real Salt Lake
Columbus Crew SC
Philadelphia Union
New England Revolution
D.C. United
The Quakes and Montreal make big jumps after very good performances in Week 2. Minnesota, despite getting dump trucked, also moves up. They play zero defense, and therefore their games will always be worth watching, if only for the other team. We remain very skeptical about the Houston Dynamo, but the entertainment value they provided over the first two games cannot be denied. Check them out if you haven’t gotten a chance yet.
RSL and Columbus might be crap, both to watch and at getting results. Orlando and New England are unchanged because their game was postponed.
Here is a list of way-too-early takes that are not worthy of an entire column. You should argue with me about them.
Tim Howard earned the USMNT No. 1 shirt with his performance against the Red Bulls.
The Chicago Fire will be as good as they are healthy. Their starting XI rules, but their depth is bad.
I’m still unalarmed by Toronto and Seattle’s starts. Both were slightly better in Week 2 than they were in Week 1. I still think they’re the best two teams in the league.
Sporting KC’s forwards just don’t have it. It’s not going to come together consistently.
The Houston Dynamo, while cool, are not for real.
The San Jose Earthquakes, while not sexy, are for real.
Mike Petke will be RSL’s manager by July.
Miguel Almiron will finish top three in MVP voting.

Troy Terry on normalcy after World Junior glory; Denver's NCAA chances (Puck Daddy Q&A)
Tumblr media
Troy Terry skates during the third period of an NCAA hockey game against the Arizona State Sun Devils at DU’s Magness Arena on January 7, 2017, in Denver, Colorado. (Getty Images)
After Team USA beat Team Canada 5-4 to win the IIHF U20 World Junior Championships, several well-wishers started sending text messages to American forward Troy Terry.
The University of Denver sophomore had scored the winner in the fourth-round of a shootout at the Bell Centre in Montreal and many people wanted to congratulate him.
As he was going through his phone, Terry saw a tweet where he was tagged and quickly did a double-take. It was from legendary Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman and Terry could hardly control his emotions, since he was actually named after Aikman.
Congratulations on bringing home the gold to @tterry28 and Team USA!????????
— Troy Aikman (@TroyAikman) January 6, 2017
“I had to read it a couple of times and then I had to check that it was the actual Troy Aikman that was tweeting at me. Before I even did anything my first reaction was to call my dad and I think he was even more excited than I was, so it was pretty awesome,” Terry said. “It was so cool and I think it even showed that our team, even major figures in other sports were following us. I think that was really cool and just knowing there were so many people in the United States that we kind of made proud and were following us through the tournament was pretty cool.”
The 20-year-old Terry, a 2015 fifth-round draft pick of the Anaheim Ducks, said he still gets “razzed” by Denver teammates about being known as the guy who beat both Russia with three shootout goals and the powerful Canadians with another shootout tally. But he has settled back into college life for the most part as he tries to help the top ranked Pioneers to an NCAA championship. Denver opens up the NCAA men’s hockey tournament on Saturday against Michigan Tech.
[Follow Puck Daddy on social media: Twitter | Instagram | Facebook | Tumblr]
Last season, Denver lost 4-2 in the Frozen Four semifinal to North Dakota on a late goal by current Chicago Blackhawks forward Nick Schmaltz. An NCAA championship would truly end a storybook year for Terry, who has seen his development hit another level 36 points in 31 games played for Denver. At the World Juniors, Terry had seven points and four goals in seven games.
We spoke with Terry about the World Juniors, getting back to a normal college routine after the event, his thoughts on his NHL future and the upcoming NCAA tournament.
Q: What has it been like since you got back? What’s your life like now?
TERRY: I mean it has definitely – some of the attention has definitely died down which has been kind of nice. It was such an amazing experience and something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life and every time I think about it, it’s such a surreal experience and to think I kind of realized that it all actually happened, when it first happened it almost seemed like it was too surreal to be true and just the fact that we were able to win that tournament in Canada is something I’ll always cherish and really left a bond with all of us. Now being back in school, my main focus is just to do everything I can to help this Denver team accomplish our goals this year and I’m on such a special team here in Denver and we came up short last year so we have really big goals in mind, so it’ll be a big couple of weeks ahead of us. It has been nice to just kind of be able to focus on this now and get back into the swing of things.
Did people around campus, like students and such, understand what you had just done?
I think it was definitely pretty special coming back here. I think more people realized what had happened than I thought were going to. I think when I was there and was just so focused on the tournament, I don’t think I realized the magnitude the tournament had just on USA Hockey in general and everyone here in the United States. To receive the outpour of support from people was pretty awesome and when I got back there were so many people coming up and congratulating me. I still get razzed pretty hard, especially by our team and just people on campus for the whole thing and the whole ‘American Hero’ thing. It’s all in good fun. It has been pretty awesome and I think all the attention I got really showed me how much it meant to USA Hockey and how much it just meant to people in the United States and how much pride people had in us winning so I think it was really cool to come back. It has definitely died down now but it was definitely pretty cool when I got back to campus and everyone was congratulating me.
What did you think of some Canadian fans voicing their displeasure over how the tournament ended – in a shootout?
I can see where there’s a little bit of frustration because I think in both games I think I get a lot of attention for the shootout, but the games were such good games. Especially that championship game. Both teams played so hard and to have it come down to that – I could see why they’re a little frustrated but I also think the shootout has become such a big part of hockey the past several of years. I mean it’s the way it’s always been.
I think if they had won in the shootout they wouldn’t have many concerns. I can understand why there’s a little bit of frustration just because of the way it ended but I think shootouts have definitely become a huge part of the game. I think they were all aware of how the game format was.
youtube
Could you imagine what the pressure of playing for Canada in Canada would have been like? There is a lot of scrutiny and you guys are not very old. Did you ever feel bad for Team Canada at all?
I think being on the United States team in Canada, we didn’t really realize the pressure that we had and how many people were following us and supporting us until after the tournament was over and we got so much support. But I think it was totally different for them because it was pretty easy for us to handle all of it. The tournament was in Canada. There were sold out crowds for all the Canada games and the World Juniors is such a big tournament there. I know the players were definitely feeling the pressure.
It was definitely pretty special to be able to win it in Canada, but I definitely felt bad for those guys.
So what is your favorite shootout move?
The one I did against Canada and the first one against Russia is kind of my ‘go-to’ is to just come down and shoot five-hole. The backhand five-hole (against Russia), I don’t know that I’ve ever done that move in my life so I don’t know where that came from. I think you saw moves where I don’t even know where they were. It was pretty awesome.

Could that skill help you to some degree in the NHL? Getting that extra point is pretty crucial in the NHL.
I mean, it’s not like my main focus as a player. I want to get better at that type of stuff that I tend to work on but it definitely has an implication on the next level just because in the NHL you see so many shootouts. Those extra points can be really important, especially in the NHL and especially in the World Junior tournament where playoff games can come down to it. So I think the shootout is definitely an important thing in the game today. I think it could be something that could help me and hopefully I can keep having success at it.
In terms of brushes with “celebrities” didn’t you also meet The Bachelor, Ben Higgins and his fiancee?
Yeah, that was pretty awesome. I’ve received support from a lot of people that I don’t think – I can tell you he definitely didn’t know who I was before the World Juniors so it was pretty cool to receive that kind of attention and it has been cool and that was awesome. They came to our practice and I was able to take a picture with them and that was cool. They’re really nice people so it was cool for our team to be around them and get a picture with them personally was pretty awesome.

How much have you heard from the Ducks since the World Juniors? You think you’re a little more on their radar now?
I talked with them a lot and I’m really impressed with how good of an organization they are because I was a fifth-round pick and they always make me feel like one of their main guys, so I’ve been really impressed with the attention they’ve given me since I was drafted. They were really happy for me. Even some of the guys I talked to at the Ducks organization are mostly Canadians, they were still really happy for me. It was definitely really cool to receive support from everyone and they were kind of the same way. I thought if anything helped me the most at the tournament, I thought I had a good tournament just the way I played. That would have helped me the most with them besides the shootout, but I think the shootout was really cool and they were happy for me.
Does the way things played out there make you think you could have a better shot of making the NHL sooner than you previously thought?
I definitely have goals for myself and my main focus, especially this week, is just going to try to help my team the best I can and we have some pretty high expectations for our team this year so that’s definitely my main focus right now. It’s always been my goal since I was a little kid was to make the NHL. I think this year how it has transpired has helped my chances and it has made me a lot more confident as a player and in my abilities and my ability to make that jump. It’s definitely helped me, but for right now all I’ve focused on his helping our team and trying to bring some of the stuff I learned at World Juniors to our team and trying to win a championship here.

What about your team at Denver? It really feels like “The Year” for you guys. How is the group feeling going into NCAAs?
There’s obviously some pressure. I think there’s more pressure on us this year than last year just because we are the No. 1 team and we have such high expectations for ourselves, but it’s mostly excitement. Last year after we lost it was pretty heartbreaking because we really felt like we could have done it. We played a really good North Dakota team that just beat us. Ever since then, our focus with the guys returning was just to do everything we could to get ready for this year, and it even started in the summer, so it has been a long time preparing for this moment. We’re all really excited because we feel really good about our team and about our chances, so we’re all really excited.
How did you get over that North Dakota game?
It was tough but we had such a great year last year. We had to kind of take a step back and realize we had a really great year. The biggest thing for us was just trying to use it for motivation because it kind of taught us how hard it is to win the national championship and what it takes. It definitely left a hunger for a national championship with all of us returning. I think it has been a big factor in why we train so hard in the summer and why we’ve been playing so hard this year.
