Most American bison in the world are privately owned, and therefore the ranchers can breed them with cattle if they want. In fact, you can increase your odds of getting a white beefalo, or creatures of any other color, if you mix them with the appropriate domestic cattle.

However, conservation herds such as the ones in Yellowstone and here in Evanston, Wyoming, are meant to preserve some of the bison purity, so they're not going to actively hybridize them. You can often see the Bear River animals from the highway, although from that distance they kind of just look like little lumps.

The managers at Bear River State Park "try to maintain our herd at 7 to 10 adult animals" and this article from the spring of 2023 says there were 15 total at the time of writing. Three of them, including a calf, are white! You can see the calf in the last image and compare his size now, still not fully grown. They are not albino, but the color actually does come from genes from Charolais cattle, which are white, in their ancestry.

I always name my Beefalo "Sauerkraut".

Taming a beefalo is like riding a car that spontaneously flings you off into oncoming traffic.

Especially when it gets fussy. My friend was asking me why I tamed a beefalo if I hate them so much. It's like having a car. That veers itself into traffic half the year. And hates you. And guzzles an entire year's harvest of grass and twigs as fuel. And if you don't fuel it when it's not parked in your garage it ejects and damages the fucking seats. And on the off chance it doesn't, if you don't shove grass into it's face every five seconds, it won't let you in while you're being mauled to death.

It takes around four or so real-life hours to get it to not eject you into an active warzone, and if you accidentally smack it while trying to brush it, you have to make up an hour's worth of training.

I tamed this big ball of fluff for Winona and he got a combination of Flowery and Victorian makeover. 🌼 I honestly think Winona would go with something more practical, but I liked this look. xD
