The fantasy of the influencer economy is to find an audience for your content, be swept away on the winds of the algorithm, and live a glamorous life with all the money you’re making. And someone is certainly making money.
Take adult web-camming, for example, a billion-dollar global industry in which content creators build up devoted followings as they stream themselves to meet endless demand. But far from the dream of mansions and diamonds and luxury cars, a new report finds that webcam models are often making pennies on the dollar in deplorable conditions where they face bedbugs and cockroaches, filth, and shared streaming equipment often covered in semen, blood, vomit, or feces.
Research released this week by Human Rights Watch shines a light on conditions in one of the adult camming industry's hubs, Colombia. Working with two sex-worker-led organizations in the country, HRW found that models stream for hours on end in filthy studios that provide the bare minimum of equipment and facilities. The studios typically keep workers under constant surveillance to make sure they aren't taking breaks, even to drink water. And most charge extra for essentials like soap, sanitizer, and tissues.
“There was an epidemic of rashes on our hands and fingers because of the dirty keyboards, and it just kept spreading,” one 33-year-old webcam model based in Bogotá told HRW in October 2023. “But really, the mental health issues are the worst.”
Many cammers come to Colombia's big cities to use studios because they can't afford a computer and other streaming equipment. They work to save up enough money so they can eventually go off on their own. But between the cut of the revenue that popular streaming platforms like BongaCams, Chaturbate, LiveJasmin, and Stripchat take, and the percentage taken by studios, models are left with very little. And perhaps worst of all, even if they want to switch to a different studio or save up enough to go out on their own, studio bosses almost always control the cammers’ streaming accounts and will typically refuse to release them—and the valuable followings the cammers have earned.
The situation is particularly complex, HRW researcher Erin Kilbride says, because the immediate, horrific labor abuses inflicted by studio owners can obscure the larger context—the report alleges that the streaming services lack corporate accountability about the human toll of content creation on their platforms.
“When we were talking with workers, they just wanted to get back to the cockroaches, how the studio owner charges them for toilet paper or makes them work when they're on their period. … And that’s completely valid because of course you are mad at the guy you know,” Kilbride tells WIRED. “But there's a whole other layer that has been left completely invisible. This is a billion-dollar industry that has been able to excuse itself from rebuke.”
WIRED attempted to contact BongaCams, Chaturbate, LiveJasmin, and Stripchat to request comment about the research findings. None responded. HRW says, however, that Stripchat updated its rules for studios prior to publication of the organization's report. A new section in the company's terms, “Working Place Conditions,” demands that studios provide “clean and sanitary facilities … complying with applicable hygiene standards,” among other stipulations.
HRW's report outlines crucial recommendations for improving conditions at both the studio and platform levels. This includes occupational safety standards for studios enforced with regular inspections. Models must be able to take breaks and receive a minimum wage for their work, studio management should not force models to perform specific sex acts or agree that they will perform any act on behalf of the models. Additionally, models should have access to a confidential reporting mechanism so they can notify law enforcement or other authorities about workplace violations.
Developing recommendations for the platforms themselves is even more nuanced. Kilbride says that most if not all of the popular adult streaming platforms have stringent authentication requirements for creating accounts and specifically prohibit studio owners or anyone from accepting terms of service on behalf of someone else. In practice, though, the companies are not doing enough, HRW researchers claim, to offer terms of service in a simple, understandable format in a variety of languages, including Spanish.
Platforms also need to provide channels through which content creators can report violations and receive a timely response, the researchers say. And, crucially, platforms should establish policies that enable models to take ownership of and transfer their accounts from a studio. Researchers found that the current status quo on many platforms involves policy language that may confuse its users or technical complications that keep content creators say prevents them from being able to assert ownership of their accounts.
On top of everything else, the stakes are particularly high for account ownership issues, because the researchers found that studios often use “recycled” accounts—those that were authenticated and established by one cammer and then retained by a studio—to circumvent minimum age requirements and stream child sexual abuse material.
“We found that although the platforms are quite strict and have completely clear policies about not streaming kids, the studios do still manage to hire and stream children using fake IDs or, more commonly, recycled accounts,” Kilbride says. “Our research was all with adults, but many people we talked to started streaming as kids when they were 13 to 17.”
Kilbride emphasizes that the situation reflects an important tenet of sex worker advocacy and labor reform in general: Listening to workers about their needs and the protections that would help them do their jobs most effectively and equitably also, simultaneously, protects other vulnerable populations. In this case, by allowing cammers to control and transfer their accounts and their followings, the adult streaming industry could also drastically reduce the prevalence of child sexual abuse material.

This....sucks.
So I've briefly mentioned some of this stuff before but given my current circumstances, I think some transparency might be needed. I could potentially be homeless soon and I'm at the end of my rope.
Under the cut will be how I ended up in this position with some potentially triggering topics [harassment, assault, abuse] Links to help me keep my home are at the very end if you want to skip the triggering parts.
Around two years ago, I was living in an apartment with my mother through government assisted housing. Between the both of us, our combined incomes were far beneath the poverty line even for a one person household. We're both disabled, so our methods of getting income are limited. The apartment became a health hazard to my mother because of neighbors stealing packages that contained medical supplies and upstairs neighbors nearly constantly smoking cigarettes and weed with the smoke coming down to our apartment through the connected vents.
The smoke was so strong that it stuck to our clothes and doctors would run secret drug tests because they thought we were lying about not doing drugs. We both have asthma, but mine is not as severe whereas Ma also has COPD and was having to do daily breathing treatments due to the smoke. We did everything we could to get it to stop including contacting management to see if they could talk to the neighbors about smoking outside instead of inside; we were essentially told we either had to just deal with it or move. This is on top of the same neighbors causing several floods from their apartment into ours. Given our financial situation, there was nowhere we could go.
Ma's health started getting worse from the smoke to the point that her doctor's told us that we needed to move or she could be put in a home. So with no money to live anywhere else, it was looking as if Ma would be taken away and I would be left homeless.
Our situation was taken advantage of by someone Ma thought she could trust. An old friend she had known and lost contact with but found again years later had agreed to help us move by all three of us getting a house and splitting the bills based on income. It seemed like the perfect solution; space, no more smoke, and the ability to install disability aids- the apartments had not allowed us to make the apartment accessible, which led to several injuries over the time we lived there. I had managed to save income tax + stimulus money that was just enough for a home inspection and other necessary expenses, so I covered those with the agreement that Ma's friend would pay me back for his part. He never did.
We managed to get a house- one that turned out to not even be up to code but it was too late to back out now, which put me into dept with loans to fix. There are still many repairs needing to be done, but those have no choice but to wait.
Moving in, MF said the place he lived prior had bedbugs but he had treated his things already so not to worry about it. He lied. The back bedroom got an infestation we had no money to get rid of, leaving us to resort to cheap sprays that did very little. It also became quickly apparent that MF was incredibly irresponsible with money; he would spend hundreds of dollars on unnecessary expenses from video game loot to luxury items. He frequently was late on bills that usually fell to me to pay off with whatever savings I had, so anytime I had a savings, it would be gone shortly after so that things like utilities would not be cut off.
Conflict and arguments became common over various things. MF was barely less than a stranger to me, but I tried to be polite and get to know him. The more I talked to him, the more I became uncomfortable. He was a sexist pig who laughed about beating one of his exes.
And now we were stuck living with him. MF is also disabled and took advantage of that as well. He was manipulative and would put up the image of 'poor disabled white man' to get out of trouble who knows how many times at this point. Ma secretly got into contact with some of his past partners and people who lived with him, and they had pretty consistent stories; he made their lives Hell. He called them all crazy and jealous, but given the fact that he was also making our lives Hell, it was clear he was a liar. Every time he got caught lying and called out on it, he tried to gaslight us.
MF escalated his behavior knowing we had nowhere else to go and no money to do so. He tried pushing boundaries with me, getting too close when I was bent over and had my hands preoccupied or when I wore certain clothes. I would immediately tell him to not get that close to me and he would react negatively with anger and trying to make it out as if I was overreacting.
My mother is not as confident in enforcing boundaries as I am. She wanted to 'keep the peace' but was being abused when I wasn't in the room. I didn't find out until much later when she ended up physically injured with bruised ribs. This was also when her doctors found out how dangerous our living situation was.
Then Ma had major surgery for health related reasons. She was in and out of the ICU for over a week recovering, and the entire time, MF was going to the hospital and telling the doctors/nurses all sorts of lies from being Ma's boyfriend to husband, took me off her emergency contact, and refused to tell me what was happening to her. MF would up and leave without warning, and because of my work and other factors, I could not go see Ma while he was there. One day I told MF that we would go see Ma together so that I could actually get to see her in recovery.
The next morning when we were supposed to go, he left early by himself without saying a word. I had to take my little brother to work 'cause he didn't have a car and had to prioritize that so my brother wouldn't lose pay or his job. When I got to the hospital afterward, I had a suspicion and went to the front desk to ask where Ma was before I went anywhere. Found out then that MF had also lied about what room Ma was in. When I get there, a nurse was checking on Ma and asks who I am. I tell him, and he turns to MF and asks "Is this the one you said wasn't coming?" I was seething. Ended up having a breakdown shortly after because I finally learned what all was happening with Ma.
Ma's doctors and social workers, after several months, were able to find a way to get MF out of the house. He was given the options of leaving and owing only $500 a month in mortgage or being taken away by police. He didn't leave until the day before he would be forcibly removed. He stole several items of ours while leaving junk and spare furniture behind. Him leaving behind furniture was not out of kindness, but another way to lie and play the victim to people who didn't know what was happening. 'They kicked me out and stole my things' is the gist of what he told others so they would pity him and give him money/luxury items.
Since he was only obligated to pay $500 in mortgage, Ma and I had to figure out how to pay the bills he had been covering while living there. We managed it, but we could not cover that $500 with our incomes. MF did not pay that $500 and hasn't in over a year. We've been scrambling month after month to cover it. I got a better job and still can't cover it. We tried to seek legal action to hold MF to his contractual obligation of the $500....he put himself into a temporary hold at a mental clinic to be deemed 'incompetent' at the time. He's hopped around places to not be found, all the while threatening us and trying to sell the house while we're still living here.
He told us that he only has to wait it out until we have no choice left but to sell the house and he'll get his cut due to being a partial 'buyer'. Several times he even showed up without warning, coming into the fenced yard, digging through our trash, and getting into the shed. He only stopped as far as we know when threatened with the police.
For the past year, we've been struggling to cover his $500 and facing potential homelessness every month. We've been managing by the skin of our teeth, but it's looking as if our options are running out. Then with him trying to sell the house from under us, he may be able to succeed if we can't pay the mortgage, which will get him even more money than what he's already stolen from us. We're working on taking him off the mortgage, but that is taking time we may not have. We also can't legally get a roommate due to our state laws.
So I'm asking for help. If y'all could commission me, get stickers/magnets/etc. from my Redbubble shop, or donate through my Ko-fi, that would be greatly appreciated. Even just reblogging could help. I'm doing whatever I can to not lose my home.

This photo was taken from a website known as 1092paradise.com, but it ended up being used on this website. This face on the website is named White Man, the head admin on the web. Though, unlike 1092paradise.com, this website is a threat.
There’s a website called Parasites.org, and it’s claimed that when you first enter the website, it automatically asks what your name is, bank account information, and other personal stuff like your address. Not doing so will not do anything to you, but if you put in your information, it shows up with the following text:
Thank you, customer! Enjoy your parasites! ;)
And it directs you to the main part of the website; it’s a shop that includes, as you guessed, parasites, which can be anything: ticks, bedbugs, tapeworms, and leeches, notably human parasites; each of them costs a small price with the following text on top that says “No Refunds!” It also comes with an illegal drug that contains an organ-eating parasite.
You can also use the contact forum for chatting with the people who run the website. The people are friendly, greeting people like a regular employee does, but when you ask for assistance with White Man, he automatically shows up; he has a profile picture of an evil smiling white face with sharp teeth, followed by two black itty-bitty dots on the eyes.
Here’s what he says:
White Man: Hello, thanks for asking for my assistance! How could I help you?
You have two options. You can reply with “my drug isn’t coming!” or “what do you do with my address?”
If you pick “my drug isn’t coming!” You will be forced to buy the drug again, even if you didn’t buy it. The White Man also says that if you don’t buy the drug, he will come over to your house and end your life.
If you pick “what do you do with my address?” He responds, “It’s our company policy; if we don’t get your address, we can’t mail the drugs or parasites to you.” Though, when you buy something from Parasites, someone at Parasites.org will email you back and say the following short text:
“Hello! Thanks for shopping at Parasites.org; your parasite or drug will arrive in 3 days! Check your mailbox daily, and give us a message on our website if you don’t find anything there.
Have a wonderful rest of your day, night, or evening.”
After 3 days, the item will arrive in the mail, and it will be inside a box. Upon opening, it will contain some blood from someone and a bit of fluid with the drug or parasite in the middle, and every order will contain a note inside that contains a link that, upon typing in the search engine, will direct you to a texting UI where, with darkness in the background, the text says the following:
“Hello! Thanks for buying our product; we will do whatever you want us to do. If you want us to kill an enemy of yours or anything, type that in the box underneath. Though it’s recommended If you don’t include your name, the same thing will happen to you.”
This is where the website goes downhill, and the entirety of it will lead to the main reason why it got removed.
According to the victims list, it says that your enemy will be stabbed to death, and sometimes the employees will record their murder and make a snuff film out of it. If you put your name instead, it’s more graphic.
Your death will be either getting shot or they will put a maggot on your body so it can dig into you and lay eggs inside of you. They usually shoot you afterwards as they want you to feel the most pain.
As of now, luckily, the site's owner and the other employees ended up getting arrested, and the website got deleted altogether, but there’s something on the corpses that didn’t get answered yet and should be answered.
“Let them eat what’s inside of you :)”

Yeah one thing I've learned by being in an agriculture school is that most of what's "mainstream" knowledge is false or at the very least very watered down and not presented in a way that makes it easier to understand. Like there's a soil bacterium that's used as a pesticide that only effects caterpillars and west Nile carrying mosquitos and also works as an anticancer in lab settings but people see the big scary pesticide and run away even though you could drink it and be fine.

Yeah, and the widely held belief that Glyphosate (Roundup) is uniquely dangerous as a pesticide when the active ingredient is actually significantly safer than most of the other stuff out there. (I say active ingredient because there are inactive ingredients that may actually be more harmful but are less regulated)
Or just...a lot of things about pesticides. Like USA consumers freaking out over the possibility of pesticide residues on their food, and pesticide residues driving all the safety concerns, when there are underpaid and oppressed migrant workers being forced to touch and breathe the stuff all the damn time, probably without proper PPE, because a lot of agricultural laborers in the USA are undocumented and if they complain about unsafe labor practices their boss (You're not a farmer if you just own a farm and don't touch dirt yourself, lol) can squeal on them to ICE.
Like no, one nanogram of roundup having been in the same room of your food isn't going to give you cancer, but inhaling and having skin contact with roundup day in and day out for 30 years just might.
Also I hope you don't use Raid or any kind of bug-killing spray in your house on a regular basis and turn around and complain about pesticides on your food.
Reading in depth about the active ingredients of pesticides and the content of their safety data sheets, how they've been tested, and their rules for handling and using them made me much less afraid of pesticides on food, and much MORE afraid of pesticides in houses.
Like to be completely honest with you, as long as they're not bedbugs or some other kind of parasite, I would prefer to just have the bugs in my house, thanks.
(Predators like spiders and house centipedes are actually helping to STOP actually harmful creatures from moving in to those niches, so there's also that.)
Don't even get me started on GMO's.
Why are agriculture classes the first time I've learned extremely basic info about nutrition and how digestion works. Why isn't this stuff in health textbooks or any easily accessible resource about healthy eating.

How to Choose the Best Pest Control Service in Dubai
Tumblr media
Pests can be a major problem for homes and businesses in Dubai. From termites to rodents, ants, and cockroaches, pests can cause damage, spread diseases, and create an unhealthy living environment. That's why it's important to choose the right pest control service to protect your property. In this blog, we'll guide you through the process of selecting the best pest control services in Dubai.
1. Understand the Types of Pests You Are Dealing With
Before choosing a pest control service, it's essential to know the types of pests you need help with. Different pests require different treatment methods, and knowing which pests you're dealing with can help you make a more informed decision.
Common pests in Dubai include:
Termites
Rodents (mice and rats)
Cockroaches
Bedbugs
Ants
Mosquitoes
Flies
Knowing what type of pest infestation you have will help you find a pest control service in Dubai that specializes in treating those specific pests.
2. Look for Licensed and Certified Pest Control Companies
It's crucial to choose a pest control company in Dubai that is licensed and certified. A licensed company will have the necessary experience, knowledge, and legal permissions to provide safe and effective pest control services.
When choosing a pest control service, check for these credentials:
License: Ensure the company holds a valid license issued by the relevant local authorities in Dubai.
Certification: Look for certifications from recognized organizations in pest control, such as the Dubai Municipality or other pest control governing bodies.
Trained Technicians: The company should employ trained and experienced technicians who are knowledgeable about various pest control methods.
3. Choose Eco-Friendly Pest Control Services
Many homeowners today prefer eco-friendly or green pest control methods to avoid harmful chemicals in their homes and the environment. If you have children, pets, or allergies, eco-friendly treatments are a safer option.
Look for pest control services in Dubai that offer:
Non-toxic chemicals: Eco-friendly pest control services use natural or low-toxicity products to eliminate pests without posing a risk to your health.
Sustainable solutions: Choose companies that focus on long-term prevention and sustainable pest control methods.
Minimal environmental impact: Opt for services that prioritize minimizing their impact on the environment.
4. Check for a Good Reputation
Reputation is one of the most important factors when selecting a pest control service. A reliable company will have positive reviews from satisfied customers, and it’s worth spending some time researching their reputation before making a decision.
You can:
Read customer reviews: Look for online reviews and testimonials from previous customers. Websites like Google Reviews, Trustpilot, or social media platforms can give you insights into the company’s reliability and service quality.
Ask for recommendations: Ask friends, family, or neighbors who have used pest control services in Dubai for their recommendations.
Check the company's website: A well-established company will have a professional website with information about their services, experience, and customer feedback.
5. Compare Pricing and Services
Pricing is an important consideration when selecting a pest control service, but it shouldn’t be the only factor. While it’s tempting to go for the cheapest option, low-cost services may not always provide the best quality.
When comparing prices, keep the following in mind:
Request quotes: Contact multiple pest control services in Dubai and ask for quotes. A reputable company will be happy to provide a detailed estimate based on your needs.
Check for hidden costs: Make sure the quote includes all the necessary treatments and charges. Ask if there are any additional fees for follow-up visits or emergency services.
Value for money: Choose a service that provides good value for money by offering quality treatments, customer support, and long-term pest prevention.
6. Evaluate the Treatment Methods
Different pest control companies use various treatment methods, and some may be more effective than others. It's important to ask about the methods they use and make sure they are safe and efficient.
Consider the following when evaluating treatment methods:
Integrated Pest Management (IPM): IPM is a comprehensive approach to pest control that focuses on prevention, monitoring, and minimal use of chemicals. This method is effective and environmentally friendly.
Chemical treatments: If the company uses chemicals, ask about the products they use. Ensure that the chemicals are safe for your family and pets.
Preventative measures: The best pest control services will not only eliminate pests but will also offer advice and solutions to prevent future infestations.
7. Customer Service and Support
A good pest control service in Dubai will prioritize customer service and provide excellent support throughout the entire process. From your first inquiry to after-treatment follow-up, customer service should be friendly, professional, and responsive.
Look for companies that offer:
Free consultations: Many pest control services offer free inspections or consultations to assess your situation and recommend the best solution.
24/7 support: Some pest control companies offer round-the-clock support for emergency infestations.
Guarantees: Look for companies that offer guarantees on their services. This will ensure that they are committed to delivering results.
8. Ask About Insurance and Safety Measures
Ensure the pest control company you choose in Dubai has insurance to cover any damages that may occur during the treatment. Also, ask about the safety measures they take to protect your property and family.
A reliable pest control service will:
Have liability insurance: This protects you in case of any accidents or damages during the pest control process.
Take safety precautions: The company should follow strict safety protocols to ensure that your home, family, and pets are safe during and after treatment.
Conclusion
Choosing the best pest control service in Dubai involves considering factors such as the types of pests you’re dealing with, the company’s reputation, pricing, treatment methods, and customer service. By following the tips above, you can find a reliable pest control company that will provide effective and safe pest management for your home or business.
When you hire professional pest control services in Dubai, you’re investing in the long-term health and safety of your property. So take the time to choose wisely and protect your space from unwanted pests!

What Are the Latest Advances in Bedbugs Control Technology in Brampton?
Bedbugs have been a persistent problem in homes, apartments, and hotels for years, but with recent technological advancements, there are now more efficient and effective ways to control them. In Brampton, residents and businesses are increasingly turning to innovative bedbugs control services to tackle this issue. Bedbugs can multiply quickly, and their bites can cause discomfort, irritation, and even health issues. As a result, new techniques in bedbugs control are crucial to prevent widespread infestations. Let's explore some of the latest advances in bedbugs control technology in Brampton that are making a significant impact.
Tumblr media
Heat Treatment Technology:
One of the most groundbreaking innovations in bedbug control is the use of heat treatment. This method involves raising the temperature in infested areas to a level that is lethal to bedbugs while being safe for most furnishings. Bedbugs can’t survive in temperatures above 113°F (45°C), so heat treatment effectively eradicates them at all life stages, from eggs to adults. This method is non-toxic, chemical-free, and very effective in homes, hotels, and apartments. It has gained popularity in Brampton due to its efficiency and environmental benefits.
Cryonite Technology:
Cryonite is another advanced solution that has emerged in the fight against bedbugs. This method involves using dry ice (carbon dioxide) to freeze the pests and their eggs. When the Cryonite machine releases CO2 snow, it lowers the temperature drastically, instantly killing bedbugs upon contact. The advantage of this technology is that it is fast and can reach places that are difficult to access with traditional pesticides. It is safe for pets, children, and the environment, which makes it ideal for use in residential homes and hotels in Brampton.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM):
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is a holistic approach that combines multiple strategies to control bedbugs. It involves the use of non-chemical methods first, such as heat treatment and physical barriers, followed by the strategic application of chemical treatments when necessary. IPM focuses on long-term solutions rather than quick fixes. It is a sustainable way to address bedbug infestations, and pest control companies in Brampton are increasingly adopting this method to reduce the reliance on pesticides.
Smart Traps and Monitoring Devices:
With the advent of smart technology, there are now advanced monitoring devices and smart traps that can help detect bedbug activity in real-time. These traps use sensors to detect the presence of bedbugs and send alerts to property owners or pest control services. This technology allows for faster intervention, preventing an infestation from spreading further. In Brampton, these devices are gaining popularity in hotels, multi-unit residences, and homes, providing a proactive approach to pest control.
Benefits of These Advanced Technologies:
Efficiency: These methods are faster and more effective than traditional chemical treatments, often eliminating bedbugs in a single session.
Eco-friendly: Many of these technologies, such as heat treatment and Cryonite, are chemical-free, reducing the environmental impact and making them safer for pets and children.
Long-term results: With strategies like IPM, the focus is on eliminating the source of the problem and preventing future infestations, ensuring long-lasting relief.
Non-invasive: These methods are often less disruptive to daily life and don’t require extensive cleaning or damage to the property.
As the fight against bedbugs evolves, these technological advancements in bedbugs control service in Brampton offer effective, eco-friendly, and efficient solutions. For residents struggling with infestations, these options are proving to be a game-changer. Bedbugs may be a stubborn pest, but with these latest technologies, Brampton homeowners can finally get a good night's sleep.
With the increasing development of pest control technologies, Brampton residents are now better equipped to handle bedbug problems. Whether through heat treatments, Cryonite freezing, or integrated pest management, these advancements are ensuring a more effective and long-lasting solution. Consider consulting a bedbugs control service in Brampton to take advantage of these innovative methods. Access More Information Here!

5 Common Pest Control Plants to Keep Your Home and Garden Pest-Free
Nature provides us with incredible tools to manage pests without resorting to harsh chemicals. Pest control plants are an eco-friendly and beautiful way to repel unwanted insects while enhancing your garden's aesthetics. These plants contain natural compounds that deter pests, making them a perfect addition to your garden or even your indoor spaces.
Here are five common pest control plants that can help keep your home and garden pest-free:
1. Marigolds
Why They Work: Marigolds emit a scent that deters many common garden pests, such as aphids, whiteflies, and nematodes. The natural chemicals in marigolds, particularly pyrethrum, act as an effective insect repellent.
How to Use: Plant marigolds around the edges of your vegetable garden or near plants that are prone to pests. They are particularly effective in protecting tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers.
2. Lavender
Why They Work: The soothing scent of lavender for humans is highly repellent to pests like mosquitoes, flies, moths, and fleas. The essential oils in lavender contain linalool, which is a natural pest deterrent.
How to Use: Plant lavender near windows, doors, or patios to keep insects away from your home. Dried lavender can also be used indoors in sachets or potpourris.
3. Basil
Why They Work: Basil is not only a versatile culinary herb but also a natural pest deterrent. Its strong aroma repels mosquitoes, flies, and whiteflies.
How to Use: Plant basil in pots and place them on windowsills, kitchen counters, or patios. In the garden, it works well near tomatoes to keep pests at bay and enhance their flavor.
4. Mint
Why They Work: Mint's strong aroma deters ants, mosquitoes, and flies. It also repels mice, making it a double-duty pest control plant.
How to Use: Plant mint in containers to prevent it from spreading uncontrollably. Place the containers around doorways, patios, and other high-traffic areas to repel pests effectively.
5. Chrysanthemums
Why They Work: Chrysanthemums contain a natural compound called pyrethrin, which is highly effective at repelling a variety of pests, including ants, roaches, fleas, ticks, and bedbugs.
How to Use: Plant chrysanthemums in your garden to create a protective barrier against pests. You can also use dried chrysanthemum flowers to make natural insect repellents.
Tips for Maximizing Pest Control Plants
Companion Planting: Use these plants strategically in your garden to protect more vulnerable crops.
Indoor Use: Many of these plants, like lavender and mint, thrive indoors and can keep pests away from your living spaces.
Regular Maintenance: Healthy plants are more effective at pest control, so water, prune, and fertilize them as needed.
Benefits of Pest Control Plants
Eco-Friendly: These plants provide a natural alternative to chemical pesticides.
Cost-Effective: Growing pest control plants is an inexpensive way to manage pests.
Aesthetic Appeal: These plants add beauty and fragrance to your garden and home.
Conclusion
Incorporating natural pest control plants like marigolds, lavender, basil, mint, and chrysanthemums into your home and garden is an excellent way to deter unwanted pests while keeping your environment healthy and beautiful. However, for more persistent pest issues, it’s important to rely on professional services to ensure your property remains pest-free.If you’re looking for reliable and effective pest control services in West Memphis, TN, Marion, AR, Wynne, AR, Jonesboro, AR, or Paragould, AR, trust the experts at Acme Pest Management. Like many Romans, the historian Livy may have been a practitioner of biphasic sleep – he alludes to the method in his magnum opus, The History of Rome
One colonial account from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1555 described how the Tupinambá people would eat dinner after their first sleep, while another – from 19th Century Muscat, Oman – explained that the local people would retire for their first sleep before 22:00
And far from being a peculiarity of the Middle Ages, Ekirch began to suspect that the method had been the dominant way of sleeping for millennia – an ancient default that we inherited from our prehistoric ancestors. The first record Ekirch found was from the 8th Century BC, in the 12,109-line Greek epic The Odyssey, while the last hints of its existence dated to the early 20th Century, before it somehow slipped into oblivion.
How did it work? Why did people do it? And how could something that was once so completely normal, have been forgotten so completely?
A spare moment
In the 17th Century, a night of sleep went something like this.
From as early as 21:00 to 23:00, those fortunate enough to afford them would begin flopping onto mattresses stuffed with straw or rags – alternatively it might have contained feathers, if they were wealthy – ready to sleep for a couple of hours. (At the bottom of the social ladder, people would have to make do with nestling down on a scattering of heather or, worse, a bare earth floor – possibly even without a blanket.)
At the time, most people slept communally, and often found themselves snuggled up with a cosy assortment of bedbugs, fleas, lice, family members, friends, servants and – if they were travelling – total strangers.
To minimise any awkwardness, sleep involved a number of strict social conventions, such as avoiding physical contact or too much fidgeting, and there were designated sleeping positions. For example, female children would typically lie at one side of the bed, with the oldest nearest the wall, followed by the mother and father, then male children – again arranged by age – then non-family members.
A couple of hours later, people would begin rousing from this initial slumber. The night-time wakefulness usually lasted from around 23:00 to about 01:00, depending on what time they went to bed. It was not generally caused by noise or other disturbances in the night – and neither was it initiated by any kind of alarm (these were only invented in 1787, by an American man who – somewhat ironically – needed to wake up on time to sell clocks). Instead, the waking happened entirely naturally, just as it does in the morning.
The period of wakefulness that followed was known as "the watch" – and it was a surprisingly useful window in which to get things done. "[The records] describe how people did just about anything and everything after they awakened from their first sleep," says Ekirch. p0bfytvc.jpg.jpg

Under the weak glow of the Moon, stars, and oil lamps or "rush lights" – a kind of candle for ordinary households, made from the waxed stems of rushes – people would tend to ordinary tasks, such as adding wood to the fire, taking remedies, or going to urinate (often into the fire itself).
For peasants, waking up meant getting back down to more serious work – whether this involved venturing out to check on farm animals or carrying out household chores, such as patching cloth, combing wool or peeling the rushes to be burned. One servant Ekirch came across even brewed a batch of beer for her Westmorland employer one night, between midnight and 02:00. Naturally, criminals took the opportunity to skulk around and make trouble – like the murderer in Yorkshire.
But the watch was also a time for religion.
For Christians, there were elaborate prayers to be completed, with specific ones prescribed for this exact parcel of time. One father called it the most "profitable" hour, when – after digesting your dinner and casting off the labours of the world – "no one will look for you except for God”.
Those of a philosophical disposition, meanwhile, might use the watch as a peaceful moment to ruminate on life and ponder new ideas. In the late 18th Century, a London tradesman even invented a special device for remembering all your most searing nightly insights – a "nocturnal remembrancer", which consisted of an enclosed pad of parchment with a horizontal opening that could be used as a writing guide.
But most of all, the watch was useful for socialising – and for sex.
As Ekirch explains in his book, At Day's Close: A History of Nighttime, people would often just stay in bed and chat. And during those strange twilight hours, bedfellows could share a level of informality and casual conversation that was hard to achieve during the day.
For husbands and wives who managed to navigate the logistics of sharing a bed with others, it was also a convenient interval for physical intimacy – if they'd had a long day of manual labour, the first sleep took the edge off their exhaustion and the period afterwards was thought to be an excellent time to conceive copious numbers of children.
Once people had been awake for a couple of hours, they'd usually head back to bed. This next step was considered a "morning" sleep and might last until dawn, or later. Just as today, when people finally woke up for good depended on what time they went to bed. An ancient adaptation
According to Ekirch, there are references to the system of sleeping twice peppered throughout the classical era, suggesting that it was already common then. It's casually dropped into works by such illustrious figures as the Greek biographer Plutarch (from the First Century AD), the Greek traveller Pausanias (from the Second Century AD), the Roman historian Livy and the Roman poet Virgil.
Later, the practise was embraced by Christians, who immediately saw the watch's potential as an opportunity for the recital of psalms and confessions. In the Sixth Century AD, Saint Benedict required that monks rise at midnight for these activities, and the idea eventually spread throughout Europe – gradually filtering through to the masses.
But humans aren't the only animals to discover the benefits of dividing up sleep – it's widespread in the natural world, with many species resting in two or even several separate stretches. This helps them to remain active at the most beneficial times of day, such as when they're most likely to find food while avoiding ending up as a snack themselves.
One example is the ring-tailed lemur. These iconic Madagascan primates, with their spooky red eyes and upright black-and-white tails, have remarkably similar sleeping patterns to preindustrial humans – they're "cathemeral", meaning they're up at night and during the day.
"There are broad swaths of variability among primates, in terms of how they distribute their activity throughout the 24-hour period," says David Samson, director of the sleep and human evolution laboratory at the University of Toronto Mississauga, Canada. And if double-sleeping is natural for some lemurs, he wondered: might it be the way we evolved to sleep too?
Ekirch had long been harbouring the same hunch. But for decades, there was nothing concrete to prove this – or to illuminate why it might have vanished.
Then back 1995, Ekirch was doing some online reading late one night when he found an article in the New York Times about a sleep experiment from a few years before.
The research was conducted by Thomas Wehr, a sleep scientist from the National Institute of Mental Health, and involved 15 men. After an initial week of observing their normal sleeping patterns, they were deprived of artificial illumination at night to shorten their hours of "daylight" – whether naturally or electrically generated – from the usual 16 hours to just 10. The rest of the time, they were confined to a bedroom with no lights or windows, and fully enveloped in its velvety blackness. They weren't allowed to play music or exercise – and were nudged towards resting and sleeping instead. p0bfysgg.jpg.jpg
Ekirch wonders if today people might remember fewer dreams than our ancestors did, because it's less common to wake up in the middle of the night (Credit: Alamy)
At the start of the experiment, the men all had normal nocturnal habits – they slept in one continuous shift that lasted from the late evening until the morning. Then something incredible happened.
After four weeks of the 10-hour days, their sleeping patterns had been transformed – they no longer slept in one stretch, but in two halves roughly the same length. These were punctuated by a one-to-three-hour period in which they were awake. Measurements of the sleep hormone melatonin showed that their circadian rhythms had adjusted too, so their sleep was altered at a biological level.
Wehr had reinvented biphasic sleep. "It [reading about the experiment] was, apart from my wedding and the birth of my children, probably the most exciting moment in my life," says Ekirch. When he emailed Wehr to explain the extraordinary match between his own historical research, and the scientific study, "I think I can tell you that he was every bit as exhilarated as I was," he says. p0bfyvg4.jpg.jpg
For much of human history, those who couldn't afford a bed had to sleep on straw or other dried vegetation (Credit: Getty Images)
More recently, Samson's own research has backed up these findings – with an exciting twist.
Back in 2015, together with collaborators from a number of other universities, Samson recruited local volunteers from the remote community of Manadena in northeastern Madagascar for a study. The location is a large village that backs on to a national park – and there is no infrastructure for electricity, so nights are almost as dark as they would have been for millennia.
The participants, who were mostly farmers, were asked to wear an "actimeter" – a sophisticated activity-sensing device that can be used to track sleep cycles – for 10 days, to track their sleep patterns.
"What we found was that [in those without artificial light], there was a period of activity right after midnight until about 01:00-01:30 in the morning," says Samson, "and then it would drop back to sleep and to inactivity until they woke up at 06:00, usually coinciding with the rising of the Sun."
As it turns out, biphasic sleep never vanished entirely – it lives on in pockets of the world today.
A new social pressure
Collectively, this research has also given Ekirch the explanation he had been craving for why much of humanity abandoned the two-sleep system, starting from the early 19th Century. As with other recent shifts in our behaviour, such as a move towards depending on clock-time, the answer was the Industrial Revolution. p0bfympb.jpg.jpg
In the 17th Century, wealthy elites usually slept in four-poster wooden beds with curtains, to keep the occupant warmer and exclude the prying eyes of visitors (Credit: Alamy)
"Artificial illumination became more prevalent, and more powerful – first there was gas [lighting], which was introduced for the first time ever in London," says Ekirch, "and then, of course, electric lighting toward the end of the century. And in addition to altering people's circadian rhythms. artificial illumination also naturally allowed people to stay up later."
However, though people weren't going to bed at 21:00 anymore, they still had to wake up at the same time in the morning – so their rest was truncated. Ekirch believes that this made their sleep deeper, because it was compressed.
As well as altering the population's circadian rhythms, the artificial lighting lengthened the first sleep, and shortened the second. "And I was able to trace [this], almost decade by decade, over the course of the 19th Century," says Ekirch.
(Intriguingly, Samson's study in Madagascar involved a second part – in which half the participants were given artificial lights for a week, to see if they made any difference. And this case, the researchers found that it had no impact on their segmented sleep patterns. However, the researchers point out that a week may not be long enough for artificial lights to lead to major changes. So the mystery continues…)
Even if artificial lighting was not fully to blame, by the end of the 20th Century, the division between the two sleeps had completely disappeared – the Industrial Revolution hadn't just changed our technology, but our biology, too.
A new anxiety
One major side-effect of much of humanity's shift in sleeping habits has been a change in attitudes. For one thing, we quickly began shaming those who oversleep, and developed a preoccupation with the link between waking up early and being productive.
"But for me, the most gratifying aspect of all this," says Ekert, "relates to those who suffer from middle-of-the-night insomnia." He explains that our sleeping patterns are now so altered, any wakefulness in the middle of the night can lead us to panic. "I don't mean to make light of that – indeed, I suffer from sleep disorders myself, actually. And I take medication for it… " But when people learn that this may have been entirely normal for millennia, he finds that it lessens their anxiety somewhat.
However, before Ekirch's research spawns a spin off of the Paleo diet, and people start throwing away their lamps – or worse, artificially splitting their sleep in two with alarm clocks – he's keen to stress that the abandonment of the two-sleep system does not mean the quality of our slumber today is worse.
Despite near-constant headlines about the prevalence of sleep problems, Ekirch has previously argued that, in some ways, the 21st Century is a golden age for sleep – a time when most of us no longer have to worry about being murdered in our beds, freezing to death, or flicking off lice, when we can slumber without pain, the threat of fire, or having strangers snuggled up next to us.
In short, single periods of slumber might not be "natural". And yet, neither are fancy ergonomic mattresses or modern hygiene. "More seriously, there's no going back because conditions have changed," says Ekirch.
So, we may be missing out on confidential midnight chats in bed, psychedelic dreams, and night-time philosophical revelations – but at least we won't wake up covered in angry red bites.

Why DIY Pest Control Alone May Not Be Sufficient
Tumblr media
In your home, you may be tempted to do the pest invasion yourself by using do-it-yourself remedies. However, though these methods may seem convenient and affordable they often do not deal with root of the problem at all. If you live in places such as Hampden, Franklin, Hampshire, or Berkshire Counties which have varying pests that may become a recurring event then you might find that do-it-yourself pest management is inadequate. Such situations are why effective domestic pest control services are necessary for family and house security.
Do-It-Yourself Pest Management Impediments
DIY pest control, ranging from sprays, traps, and baits gives momentary relief from pests; however, they hardly eliminate pest infestations completely. Some reasons are illustrated below:
1. Incomplete Disclosures:- Most home remedies for pests are targeted toward the visible ones but the pests found behind walls, under floors, and in other inaccessible areas are often neglected. Among the pests that make their nests in places that are not easy to access include termites, bedbugs, and ants. If the source of infestation is not dealt with these insects keep multiplying therefore posing problems in the future.
2. The use of ineffective products:- Due to misidentification may worsen the infestation. For example, in Franklin and Hampden Counties, professional residential pest control services are equipped with the know-how to accurately identify and treat the particular pests infesting your house.
3. Temporary Remedies:- Home-grown methods of controlling pests appear to be more like plaster than cures for persistent infestations. While they may manage to eliminate a few of the attacking insect species on contact but these will not cure the original cause of the problem. Unless comprehensive plans containing preventive measures are laid out, then insects may return again. In addition to removing existing infestations, experts in pest control services also develop strategies for avoiding such problems in future.
Tumblr media
4. Potential Health Risks:- your family, as well as pets you have at home can suffer from health risks because of wrong use or mishandling these pest control products. Also some types of rats or particular insects could carry illnesses that can worsen if not treated promptly. In Hampshire and Berkshire Counties area expert pest controllers are able to handle these products with care and if required can give you non poisonous alternatives.
The Advantages of Residential Pest Control Services
Hiring experts is advisable due to the following reasons: Professional Residential Pest Control Services provide a more effective and comprehensive solution to pest problems.
Pest Control Plans Customized to Fit Every Residential Setting Each home has its different requirements when dealing with pests. The pest experts from Franklin and Berkshire Counties will conduct a thorough examination of your property, identify what kind of pest infestation you are dealing with and make an individualized treatment plan directed at the elimination of the pests. This bespoke method will give better results than any one-size-fits-all approach you could think about using yourself.
In-depth Investigations Professional pest control services carry out extensive investigations in order to evaluate the degree of infestation as well as pinpoint possible entry points or habitats that support pest presence. Such an extensive detail allows them to deal with the problem on its source resulting into more permanent solutions.
Enduring Deterrent One of the most significant benefits of hiring a professional pest control company is long-term prevention. Exterminators do away with current pests but also prevent them from returning through several ways: constant monitoring, eliminating food sources and closing entry points.
Tumblr media
Safe and Practical Techniques Residential Pest Control Services use safe and effective methods that are recognized in the industry. They can solve even the hardest bugs because they have stronger treatments that the public cannot get. Besides, these companies follow strict safety measures to protect your home and family members.
Why choose us?
For your unique pest challenges, choose us for knowledgeable and specialized pest control solutions.
