Katla’s List O’ Headcanons

(Cos why not.)

 - Katla is 5ft 3in, making her shortest in the quartet, even shorter than Kabu (5ft 6in).

- Katla was born in Galar, but has dual citizenship in Hoenn due to living there for a long period of time after she moved there when she was 9.

- As a result, Kat does know some of the local Hoenn dialect and can get the gist of most conversations spoken in it, as well as managing to speak short sentences. She cannot hold conversations with it, but her grasp on it is slowly expanding as she spends more time with Kabu and Stela

- Her accent is noticeably Galarian, as is the fact she swears like a fucking sailor. She does try to control herself in front of small children, but tends to struggle.

- She knows some Hoenn curses, but uses them sparingly, or in times of high emotion. *nudge nudge wink wink*

- She’s so used to using HM field moves she can teach her Pokemon Surf and Fly with only a few references. She also tends to ride her Pokemon without harnesses due to this (which causes Kabu no end of fretting)

- Is the protagonist of the Hoenn and Galar storylines - she was just an ordinary trainer in all other regions.

- Has never been to Kanto, but has caught Kanto Pokemon in other regions.

- Is in possession of the Eon flute, which is currently in storage in Hoenn - she did own Latias for the during of her Hoenn adventure, but released her after she gave up her Champion title.

- Defeated Kyogre, didn’t catch it. Mainly because she was trying not to die and was suffering from energy burns on her arms from its Origin Pulse attack.

- Technically caught Rayquaza at Sky Pillar, but released it after dealing with the Meteor threat, as she was uncomfortable with ‘owning’ it.

- Defeated Deoxys, didn’t catch it. Isn’t exactly sure if it was even a Pokemon, so doesn’t mention she ever encountered it.

- Steven retook his Champion mantle after Katla stepped down, and she would have to beat him again if she ever wished to reclaim her crown.

- Only people in Hoenn and very few people who were paying attention to the news know Katla was Hoenn’s Champion without her telling people - Kat prefers to keep it that way.

- The only people Kat has told about her previous Champion history are: Hop, Kabu, Nanu and Stela.

- Has a fairly good singing ability. Sings rock songs/those that are really good to belt out at the top of your voice. Occasionally records some of her singing and releases clips after she becomes Champion to keep the media happy.

- Was invited to come to Alola by Kukui, who she met on a trip to Kalos, as he was interested in her past adventures, especially in regards to the multitude of Pokemon moves her team had.

- After giving her a Litten to allow her to explore Alola’s islands, he and Hala agreed to let Kat try to complete the Island Challenge after watching her battling with her new starter.

- Maybe sorta cheesed Hala’s Grand Trial by switching her Pokemon at the last second, nullifying Hala’s Fighting Z Move with a Ghost type. (Nanu found this highly amusing)

- Likes to learn and collect the tales and stories of the legendary Pokemon in each region she goes to.

- Loves Ho-Oh, and would really like to see/meet it one day.

- Really dislikes the Unova region, and left before challenging the 4th gym due to it, releasing all of the Pokemon she obtained there. Likes the Pokemon from Unova though, and has quite a few of them in her other teams.

- Has a crush on Olivia, but it’s mostly petered out now with her polyamorous relationship. She still gets teased about it, though.

- One of Nanu’s Meowth took a shine to Kat, and now lives with Kat and Kabu whenever they’re staying over on Alola. Part of the reason Kat is lobbying for Pokemon import restrictions into Galar to be loosened is to bring this Meowth home with her.

- Kat’s Pokemon tend to have a habit of escaping their Pokeballs by themselves, mostly to defend and protect their trainer. Some are more protective than others, and Kat has to make sure they’re not with her when she is engaging with other...activities.

- Out of consideration for Nanu and his cat-pack, Kat does not bring her Alola Persian or any canine-like Pokemon with her into the PC.

- She cannot bring her Incineroar near Nanu at all, due to the grudge the Pokemon holds against the Kahuna after he stole Kat’s first kiss and it didn’t go down well at the time.

- According to her, it wasn’t her first kiss since she didn’t give it to someone, so technically Kabu had a her first kiss.

- Has nightmares about her encounter with Kyogre and Eternatus. They’re infrequent and don’t usually result in Kat waking violently, but they bother her, especially when she wakes her lovers with them.

- Due to said nightmares, Kat tends to take midnight walks to clear her head and also admire the stars. After accidentally waking Nanu and Stela on one exploit, she now leaves a note to let them know when she’ll be back.

- Emotionally volatile and maybe a bit traumatised after all the Hoenn nonsense, Katla took up meditation with the encouragement of her Psychic Pokemon to help calm her mind. She now meditates when she can, often finding peaceful, lonely places to do it. She prefers to do it alone, but she can meditate with Stela and Kabu, as she can trust them to either join her or not disturb her.

- Her parents encouraged Kat to keep going with her Pokemon adventure, suggesting she got to the Johto region as a change of scenery, and to start again, as it were. This proved to be the correct decision, as Kat found her zest for adventure and exploring once again.

- She particularly likes chilling on top of the PC roof, and occasionally sings there. Nanu doesn’t mind, but if she starts dancing he will go and throw something at her.

- She caught Eternatus, but doesn’t own it nor has it in her possession - it was confiscated by Interpol to use in the case against Rose. Not that Kat wanted to keep it, considering the creature brought up her previous trauma of Kyogre, only happening to be much, much larger. And dangerous.

- She also caught Zacian by Zacian’s ‘request’, but when she tried to release it, the legendary dog refused. Zacian isn’t in Kat’s possession, nor has a Pokeball, but if Kat howls, it will come to her side wherever she is. Kat discovered that this includes Alola, almost scaring the life out of Nanu when a 9 foot tall dog suddenly appeared out of the shadows with a whacking great sword in its mouth. He was less than pleased.

- Sends pictures of cat Pokemon to Nanu for him to rate. The only time she sent him a Skitty picture was when it was dressed like a goth.

- Nanu once set her a picture of her face next to Galarian Meowth’s and commented that she’d let herself go. He got a picture of her middle finger back.

- Not often viewed favourably by Galarian media, as she is very different champion to Leon. Katla can tolerate their scrutiny for a little while, but she wants her privacy and can be very prickly if disturbed. Leon does his best to shield her, but some media outlets annoy the piss out of her.

- When the pressure gets to her, Kat goes to ground and hides out, usually in the PC or Kabu’s apartment in Motostoke. Nanu and Stela are only too happy to help her out.

- She has successfully managed to hide her polyamorous relationship from the press. They are speculating on who she might be dating, but haven’t managed to suss out who. Most seem to think it’s Raihan, for some reason.

- Despite their rivalry, Kat and Raihan get along fairly well, especially since they share a love of Dragon types. Even if a couple of times he’s picked her up by the scruff of her hoodie to tease her, usually resulting in him getting kicked in the shin.

- Whilst Hop and Katla were ‘rivals’, they’re not longer considered as such now - more best friends. Although she can find Hop annoying at times, Kat adores him and is fiercely protective of the young man and his happiness. Hop sees her almost as his big sister.

- Bede and Kat never do get on. They are begrudgingly polite to one another, but that’s about it. Kat has never forgiven Bede for upsetting Hop, and Bede never fully loses his grudge at losing his place in the Challenge because of her.

- Marnie and Kat get on like a house on fire, though. Kat often visits Spikemuth to patronage some of the speciality establishments there and also have non-Dynamax battles there. Kat is thinking of demonstrating Mega Evolution and Z moves there, but is currently researching to see if they would even work in Galar.

 - Her relationship with Leon has shifted since he took control of Marco Cosmos and the Gym Challenges. Whilst he does help Kat out getting used to be the Champion and will pull strings to keep the press off of her among other things, he sometimes forgets the Kat is not him, and overloads her.

 - For the first few days after the end of the Gym season and when she finally gets a holiday, Kat tends to sleep a lot, often cuddling up with one of her loves or Pokemon to snooze.

- Has a leather jacket and trousers she really wants to wear when doing her Championship matches, but has been turned down numerous due to it being 'not the image expected of a Champion’. Kat is just a little bitter about this.

- Will often go off on her own to go Pokemon hunting or training, coming back sweaty, tired and or bruised, with a new companion or two.

 - Also likes going to wild, isolated places to sit and be on her own. If she does this on Ula’Ula, Nanu’s rare patrol will always conveniently take him close to these places, just to keep an eye on her.

- Had a crush on Stela almost as soon as she laid eyes on the woman. Despite being in love with her now, is still very starstruck and doesn’t really know how to handle her compliments without turning into a blushing, stuttery mess. Nanu thinks it’s because Kat has never learned to flirt in gay.

- Had never considered romantic relationships throughout her entire Pokemon career, as she just had very little interest in them. It actually took her meeting Nanu (and him kissing her) to even consider that she could even be physically attractive.

- Still doesn’t consider herself so. Refers to herself as a gremlin. The others do call her that too, affectionately.

- Wears rainbow coloured socks.

- Her energy scars react in the presence of the power of legendary Pokemon, usually painfully.

- Has an extremely deep grudge and dislike of professor Birch’s son Brandon, and will avoid him with all means necessary.

- Cannot hold her liquor very well and gets very chatty and excitable before she crashes and needs to be carried home.

- Kat’s dad is not Norman. Kat’s dad is called Graham and works in Lilycove city - the reason why Kat and her family moved to Hoenn was because of this job.

- Kat’s mum is called Cora and now works in a pharmacy in Wedgehurst, after formerly working in Oldale town in Hoenn. Was originally a trainer herself.

ST. LOUIS — The Latest on the PGA Championship, golf’s final major of the year (all times local): 4:30 p.m.

Gary Woodland made a mess of the par-4 10th at Bellerive, the second-round leader making triple bogey to drop to 3 over for the day and six shots behind leader Brooks Koepka.

Woodland’s trouble began when he found the bunker guarding the right side of the green. He clipped his shot from the sand and it rolled into the bunker on the opposite side of the green.

Meanwhile, Kevin Kisner hit from the same bunker — but nobody raked it.

Woodland blasted his next bunker shot over the green and into the original bunker, where the ball came to rest in a foot print. The big hitter had to conservatively get back onto the green from there, then putted his way to triple bogey. ___ 4:15 p.m.

Matt Wallace aced the par-3 16th hole with a 5 iron on Saturday to spur a Tiger-like roar from the gallery eagerly awaiting Woods to arrive in the following group.

It was the 26th hole-in-one in the PGA Championship since such records were kept in 1983.

Wallace, a 28-year-old Englishman with three European Tour victories on his resume, rewarded all those fans by chucking the ball into the crowd. What are the odds he regrets that some day?

The ace got Wallace to 2 under for the round and 5 under for the championship. ___ 4 p.m.

Brooks Koepka wrapped up a bogey-free front nine Saturday that included five pars, getting the U.S. Open champion to 13 under at the PGA Championship.

Koepka has been hot going back to Friday, when he started a second-round 63 that matched the lowest round in PGA Championship history. He’s riding a stretch of 15 birdies in 44 holes.

Koepka also struggled early at the U.S. Open, where he opened with a 5-over 75 and was 7 over early in his second round. But Koepka went on a tear the rest of that round, then shot 72-68 over the weekend at Shinnecock Hills to defend the title he won last year at Erin Hills.

Right now, Koepka is simply overpowering long but soft Bellerive Country Club. ___ 3:35 p.m.

Virtually all the work Jordan Spieth spent getting back into contention at the PGA went to waste in the span of one hole.

After playing the first 11 holes in 4 under to get within four of the lead, he made triple-bogey on the par-4 12th to drop from a tie for 10th to a tie for 26th.

Spieth hit his tee shot deep into the woods, and from a trampled lie, tried to elevate over a tree and onto the green. The ball slammed into the tree and ricocheted to the right, over a fence and out of bounds.

He took a drop, punched out into the rough, and needed three shots to get down.

He is now seven shots behind leader Brooks Koepka. ___ 3:10 p.m.

If this was next month’s Ryder Cup, everything would be going the way of Team USA.

Brooks Koepka leads the charge of Americans atop the leaderboard at the PGA Championship. Gary Woodland is one shot back, followed by Rickie Fowler, Kevin Kisner, Tiger Woods and Justin Thomas.

The run of Americans ends with Adam Scott, Shane Lowry and Charl Schwarztzl, who are at 8 under and three shots off the lead. Another group of Americans that includes Jordan Spieth, Julian Suri and Pat Perez is at 7 under, while Stewart Cink is another shot back.

The last player born outside the U.S. to win the PGA was Jason Day in 2015. ___ 2:45 p.m.

Kansas native Gary Woodland isn’t the only guy with a “hometown” crowd behind him at Bellerive.

Brice Garnett made the cut right on the number in his PGA Championship debut, much to the delight of his friends and family from Chillicothe, Missouri. Garnett starred at Missouri Western, a Division II school and the training camp home of the Kansas City Chiefs.

He still calls Gallatin in the western part of the state his home.

Garnett went wire-to-wire to win the Puntacana Resort and Club Championship in March, his first PGA Tour victory and one that got him into this week’s championship at Bellerive. ___ 1:20 p.m.

Emiliano Grillo has back-to-back birdies at the PGA Championship to join the logjam at 6 under that includes Tiger Woods, who came within a whisker of holing his pitch shot for birdie at No. 4.

If Bellerive is offering any defense, it’s the thick fescue and bluegrass rough that became saturated by Friday’s rain. And that’s where Woods drove his tee shot at the fourth before hacking his approach shot shy of the bunkers guarding the right front of the green.

With another perfect lie in the zoysia fairway, Woods’s pitch shot danced to the right and nearly rolled into the cup before settling about a foot away for a tap-in par. ___ 12:45 p.m.

The Englishman will be 4 under when he begins his round off the first tee at 12:32 p.m. He’s in a group with Zach Johnson and Emiliano Grillo that is six shots off the lead.

Rose had some back spasms last week at Firestone, but he says “from Wednesday afternoon I’ve been feeling perfectly fine.” ___ 11:20 a.m.

The third round is underway at the PGA Championship, and among those headed out at Bellerive is Daniel Berger — an incredible turnaround given where he was after his opening nine holes.

Berger was 6 over before playing his last 27 holes in 8-under par.

“I just stopped trying at one point. It’s funny how things work out,” said Berger, who was tied for the lead entering the final round of the U.S. Open before finishing in a tie for sixth.

“The last 27 holes I just kind of freewheeled it,” he said, “so that was kind of good.”

Especially considering Berger has been dealing with a wrist injury.

“It sucks,” he said, “because I’ve never been hurt before, and it’s just kind of been lingering and there’s not really a point in the season I can take a break. Just been trying to play through it.” ___ 10:50 a.m.

The second round has wrapped up at the PGA Championship, where Gary Woodland leads at 10 under and it took even-par 140 just to make the record-low 36-hole cut.

The previous low for the PGA was 1-over 141 at Atlanta Athletic Club in 2001.

Some big names missed playing the rest of the weekend, too. Matt Kuchar, Sergio Garcia and Bryson DeChambeau were in a large group at 1 over. Masters champion Patrick Reed was 3 over and Phil Mickelson was in the group at 4 over.

Julian Suri has surged into contention at the PGA Championship with an eagle at the par-5 17th taking him to 5 under, an impressive showing for the former Duke standout.

Suri’s father, Jagan, is the great grandson of Buchi Babu Naidu, one of the early pioneers of cricket in India. Jagan Suri moved to the U.S. in his teens and spent time as a professional tennis player, and now works in business development of golf courses.

Julian Suri played tennis and golf when he was young, but he clearly showed a preference for the latter. He won last year on the European Tour and has been second time this year. ___ 9:50 a.m.

Phil Mickelson will fail to automatically qualify for the Ryder Cup for the first time since 1993 after a 1-over 71 left him 4 over for the PGA Championship and well outside the cut line.

He still could be among Jim Furyk’s four captain’s choices.

Mickelson is 18-20-7 in the Ryder Cup, but he played well two years ago at Hazeltine National, when the Americans routed the Europeans 17-11 to win back the cup.

Bryson DeChambeau was just outside the top eight that automatically qualify for the team. He missed a short putt at his final hole Saturday to keep from playing the weekend. ___ 9:35 a.m.

The approach that guys will take between the second and third rounds at the PGA Championship will vary widely depending on when they finish Saturday morning and when they tee off again.

Some will have less than an hour between their rounds.

Then there’s Rickie Fowler, who concluded his 3-under 67 to get to 8 under for the tournament and within two shots of the lead. Fowler said he plans to return to the house he’s renting down the road from Bellerive, where he can change out of some wet clothes and catch some rest.

“Put some fresh clothing on and then yeah, get here like we normally would,” said Fowler, the first-round leader. “But it’s still going to be a long day.” ___ 9:15 a.m.

Sungjae Im probably should stop aiming for the greens at the PGA Championship.

The 20-year-old South Korean was right on the cut line Saturday in his second round when he chipped in for birdie on consecutive holes.

That got Im to 2 under for the championship, which would be good enough not only to play the weekend but get within eight shots of the lead.

Im became the second-youngest player to win a Web.com Tour event when he triumphed in his debut in the Bahamas earlier this year. He also has a couple of second-place finishes on the tour.

The youngest champion in Web.com Tour history? Jason Day. ___ 8:45 a.m.

Tony Finau has matched the PGA Championship record for birdies in a round with 10.

If only he didn’t also have three bogeys and a triple on his card.

Finau wound up with a 4-under 66 on Saturday to get back to even for the championship. His birdie display came while playing with Jim Furyk, the U.S. Ryder Cup captain who could have to decide whether to include Finau on his roster next month in France.

The birdie record for the PGA was set by Gary Player. Anthony Kim has the record for birdies in a major championship with 11 during the 2011 Masters. ___ 8 a.m.

Tiger Woods bounced back from his first bogey of the second round with a birdie at the short par-4 11th, getting him back to 4 under in the PGA Championship.

Meanwhile, the topsy-turvy round of Tony Finau presses on.

Finau began his second round Friday with five straight birdies, made a triple bogey, then had two more birdies. He added a bogey to finish off his front nine, and another birdie on the back nine has the U.S. Ryder Cup hopeful at even-par for the championship.

The course is playing soft with no wind and pristine greens, and that could mean record low scores this weekend. Tiger Woods already has another birdie at the eighth to reach 4 under, and first-round leader Rickie Fowler has his first birdie of the day to get to 8 under.

Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and the rest of the players that were still on the course when play was suspended at the PGA Championship have resumed their second rounds at soggy Bellerive.

Julian Suri has surged into contention at the PGA Championship with an eagle at the par-5 17th taking him to 5 under, an impressive showing for the former Duke standout.

Suri’s father, Jagan, is the great grandson of Buchi Babu Naidu, one of the early pioneers of cricket in India. Jagan Suri moved to the U.S. in his teens and spent time as a professional tennis player, and now works in business development of golf courses.

Julian Suri played tennis and golf when he was young, but he clearly showed a preference for the latter. He won last year on the European Tour and has been second time this year.

Phil Mickelson will fail to automatically qualify for the Ryder Cup for the first time since 1993 after a 1-over 71 left him 4 over for the PGA Championship and well outside the cut line.

He still could be among Jim Furyk’s four captain’s choices.

Mickelson is 18-20-7 in the Ryder Cup, but he played well two years ago at Hazeltine National, when the Americans routed the Europeans 17-11 to win back the cup.

Bryson DeChambeau was just outside the top eight that automatically qualify for the team. He missed a short putt at his final hole Saturday to keep from playing the weekend. ___ 9:35 a.m.

The approach that guys will take between the second and third rounds at the PGA Championship will vary widely depending on when they finish Saturday morning and when they tee off again.

Some will have less than an hour between their rounds.

Then there’s Rickie Fowler, who concluded his 3-under 67 to get to 8 under for the tournament and within two shots of the lead. Fowler said he plans to return to the house he’s renting down the road from Bellerive, where he can change out of some wet clothes and catch some rest.

“Put some fresh clothing on and then yeah, get here like we normally would,” said Fowler, the first-round leader. “But it’s still going to be a long day.” ___ 9:15 a.m.

Sungjae Im probably should stop aiming for the greens at the PGA Championship.

The 20-year-old South Korean was right on the cut line Saturday in his second round when he chipped in for birdie on consecutive holes.

That got Im to 2 under for the championship, which would be good enough not only to play the weekend but get within eight shots of the lead.

Im became the second-youngest player to win a Web.com Tour event when he triumphed in his debut in the Bahamas earlier this year. He also has a couple of second-place finishes on the tour.

Tony Finau has matched the PGA Championship record for birdies in a round with 10.

If only he didn’t also have three bogeys and a triple on his card.

Finau wound up with a 4-under 66 on Saturday to get back to even for the championship. His birdie display came while playing with Jim Furyk, the U.S. Ryder Cup captain who could have to decide whether to include Finau on his roster next month in France.

The birdie record for the PGA was set by Gary Player. Anthony Kim has the record for birdies in a major championship with 11 during the 2011 Masters. ___ 8 a.m.

Tiger Woods bounced back from his first bogey of the second round with a birdie at the short par-4 11th, getting him back to 4 under in the PGA Championship.

Meanwhile, the topsy-turvy round of Tony Finau presses on.

Finau began his second round Friday with five straight birdies, made a triple bogey, then had two more birdies. He added a bogey to finish off his front nine, and another birdie on the back nine has the U.S. Ryder Cup hopeful at even-par for the championship.

He’s played 12 holes and has made just one par on the round. ___ 7:15 a.m.

Haotong Li did not resume his second round at the PGA Championship, withdrawing with a wrist injury after his round was suspended by rain. He had completed the 11th hold.

Li opened with a 1-over 71 and was 3 over for the championship.

The course is playing soft with no wind and pristine greens, and that could mean record low scores this weekend. Tiger Woods already has another birdie at the eighth to reach 4 under, and first-round leader Rickie Fowler has his first birdie of the day to get to 8 under.

He’s two shots back of Gary Woodland, who already completed his second round. ___ 7 a.m.

Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and the rest of the players that were still on the course when play was suspended at the PGA Championship have resumed their second rounds at soggy Bellerive.

All of them are chasing Gary Woodland, whose 66 before the rain rolled through Friday left him 10 under for the championship. Kevin Kisner also played early and was a shot back.

They got to sleep in Saturday while 78 players yet to finish their second rounds had to be in position by 7 a.m. There will be a 30-minute break once they finish, then the third round will start with groups of three heading off the first and 10th tees.

That will mean a long day for guys like Woods, who could play more than 28 holes Saturday. He was 3 under and in the fairway at the eighth when the sirens stopped play.

Loew says “We looked nervous and we were not able to play the way we wanted to play. We will have to analyze why that was the case.”

Germany is now in an unfamiliar position. No German team had lost a World Cup opener since 1982. In the four previous World Cups, Germany won its opening matches by a combined score of 20-2.

For a defending World Cup champion, however, the position is more familiar. Three of the past four have failed to make it out of the group stage.

Reminded of that statistic, Loew offered a guarantee.

African teams have made a disappointing start to the World Cup.

Egypt, Morocco and Nigeria have lost their first matches. Senegal plays Poland on Tuesday.

Cheers erupted across Mexico as the national team bested Germany in its first match of the 2018 World Cup soccer tournament.

Police have encircled the Angel of Independence monument in Mexico City in anticipation of throngs of fans who traditionally flock there to celebrate big soccer wins. Immediately after the game, some danced in front of the monument. Drivers honked horns and exuberant families ran through the streets waving the Mexican flag and twirling green jerseys in the air.

Mexico beat Germany 1-0, with Hirving Lozano scoring the winning goal. It was the 22-year-old winger’s first World Cup goal. ___ 8:08 p.m.

Brazil coach Tite has stuck to Neymar and core players who have performed well in recent matches. Neymar and Willian will be flanking Gabriel Jesus in attack to kick off the five-time champions’ campaign in Russia.

As expected, Swiss coach Vladimir Petkovic fielded a defensive side with Haris Seferovic as the lone striker, and formation that can provide a two-line defense in front of goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

Mexico has upset Germany 1-0 in their opening World Cup game, leaving the defending champions with a tougher task to qualify for the knockout stages.

In his World Cup debut, Hirving Lozano scored Mexico’s winning goal in the 35th minute, picking up Javier Hernandez’s pass inside the penalty area and dodging Mesut Ozil before firing past Manuel Neuer from 10 yards.

After Lozano’s goal, Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa pulled off a spectacular save to keep the score level, palming Toni Kroos’ shot onto the crossbar.

Mexico pulled back into a more defensive formation midway through the second half as key players tired and had to withstand heavy pressure from Germany.

A Colombia fan cycled alone for more than 5,000 kilometers (3,100 miles) across seven European countries to reach Russia to watch his national team play in the World Cup. The 43-year-old Daniel Quiroga initially was going to make the journey with a brother and a friend, but the other two backed out of the adventure.

Four years ago, Quiroga rode from Colombia to Brazil to the 2014 World Cup with the pair, but was on a motorcycle for that journey.

After the tournament ended, he set a harder challenge for Russia and chose a bicycle.

He started out in Portugal and went through Spain, France, Germany, Poland, Lithuania and Latvia before making it to Russia.

He wore a Colombia jersey signed by members of his family and says, with a laugh, that “those signatures gave me even more energy.” ___ 6:55 p.m.

Mexican fans have chanted a homophobic slur at Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer during the World Cup game in Moscow.

FIFA has repeatedly fined the Mexican football federation over the chant. It rang out at Moscow’s Luzhniki stadium in the 24th minute of Mexico’s game against Germany on Sunday with the score at 0-0.

Fans in Mexico use the chant to insult opposing goalkeepers as they take a goal kick. Widely considered a slur, some argue there is no discriminatory intent.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport canceled two fines against Mexico in November, ruling the chant was “insulting” but not meant to offend, though it left other fines in force. ___ 6:45 p.m.

Germany is in an unfamiliar position for a World Cup opener — trailing at halftime.

Hirving Lozano scored from 14 yards out in the 35th minute to give Mexico a 1-0 lead in Moscow. He took a pass from Javier Hernandez and wrong-footed Mesut Ozil to score his eighth international goal.

Panama coach Hernan Dario Gomez is not in the business of sugarcoating the truth ahead of his team’s historic World Cup debut.

He admits Panama has trouble scoring and says it will need a good day to have any chance against Belgium on Monday.

The blunt and honest Gomez doesn’t even hide his starting lineup, the normal procedure for coaches these days — even those trying to keep expectations minimal.

Asked if Panama could match Iceland’s draw with Argentina, he didn’t bother picking the right words. He says this Argentina “is not at the same level as Belgium right now.”

Belgium will keep defender Vincent Kompany on the 23-man roster for the World Cup even though it’s likely to be later in the group stage before the veteran sees the field.

Coach Roberto Martinez said Sunday he would not be making any roster changes. Kompany suffered a groin injury in a friendly against Portugal earlier this month and the Red Devils added Laurent Ciman to their camp as a precaution. Ciman was sent back to Brussels on Saturday to await final word on Kompany’s status.

Martinez says there is a stronger chance now of Kompany now appearing in the group stage and that his experience is important to have around the squad. ___ 4:55 p.m.

Aleksandar Kolarov’s curling free kick in the 56th minute has helped Serbia to a 1-0 win over Costa Rica in its World Cup opener.

Serbia, which missed out on the 2014 World Cup, had the early advantage in a tough group in Russia that includes five-time champion Brazil and Switzerland, who were set to play later Sunday in Rostov-on-Don.

After a scoreless first half, Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas withstood a barrage of Serbian challenges to open the second with the boisterous Costa Rican fans cheering him on at Samara Arena.

But after David Guzman was handed a yellow card, Kolarov curled the free kick over the wall and Navas, who plays for Real Madrid, was not able to reach it.

South Korea coach Shin Tae-yong has warned his players about the new replay system being used for the first time in the World Cup.

He’s telling them that the video assistant referee can’t be tricked.

Shin says “the players are aware of this. We are training the players.

There are 32 cameras that are targeting the pitch. So you might be able to fool the referee, but you cannot fool the cameras. The players know this, and that is something we have emphasized.”

Shin is famous for using some trickery in his tactics. But he says his players have been schooled about the new system, which will detect a dive or a faked contact with another player.

He says “the VAR has really come to the forefront and it’s become an important part of the game.” ___ 4:15 p.m.

Captain Aleksandar Kolarov has given Serbia a 1-0 lead against Costa Rica. His free kick curled over the wall and diving Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas wasn’t able to reach it before it sailed into the upper right corner in the 56th minute. The free kick came after a yellow card on Costa Rica’s David Guzman. ___ 3:48 p.m.

The opening half between Costa Rica and Serbia was back and forth, right from the start: Aleksandar Mitrovic’s header was off in the opening minute and moments later Marco Urena’s angled shot for Costa Rica was saved in the left corner by Vladimir Stojkovic.

Following a corner kick, David Guzman popped the ball to Giancarlo Gonzalez but his header sailed over the net in the 12th minute.

Branislav Ivanovic’s cross was knocked out of the box by Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas three minutes later.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic challenged Navas in the 27th from just outside the box, but Navas fell on the ball.

Urena’s right-foot strike from outside the box in the 39th went over the bar. A short time later Calvo’s chance was wide, and Stojkovic gestured for his side to calm down.

Sweden coach Janne Andersson says one of his staff got into a closed South Korea training session and was asked to leave, leading to a squabble between the teams over spying ahead of their World Cup game on Monday.

Andersson says the staffer, who is entrusted with scouting the opposition, thought the practice session at South Korea’s pre-World Cup training camp in Austria was open. Andersson says the coach left when asked and “watched from more of a distance.”

The incident has created a frosty atmosphere between the teams ahead of their game in Nizhny Novgorod.

Andersson says his team analyzes all opponents and the incident has been overblown, but adds “it’s very important that we show respect for opponents … If it has been perceived in another way, we apologize.” ___ 2:40 p.m.

Veteran defender Branislav Ivanovic is set to become Serbia’s most capped international player when he starts against Costa Rica in the World Cup. It will be his 104th international appearance and Serbia’s first at the World Cup in eight years.

The former Chelsea star surpassed Dejan Stankovic, known as “Deki,” who played 103 games for the national team from 1998-2013, through three different eras: Yugoslavia, Serbia-Montenegro and finally Serbia.

Johan Venegas, Francisco Calvo and David Guzman will be making their World Cup debuts for Costa Rica. The rest of the Costa Rica starting lineup was involved in Brazil in 2014, when the team lost a quarterfinal match to Netherlands on penalties. ____ 2:20 p.m.

Midfielder Alan Dzagoev has ruled himself out of Russia’s two remaining World Cup group games because of injury.

Dzagoev hurt his left hamstring during Russia’s opening 5-0 win over Saudi Arabia and tells Russia’s RIA Novosti news agency he’s in pain when walking and will only resume light training Monday.

Dzagoev says “there’s nothing good about the biggest tournament going on without you. I hope I can still play. I hope to God that we make the knockout stages and maybe I’ll be able to play.”

Dzagoev has played 58 times for Russia and was expected to be a key player for the host nation at the World Cup. ___ 12:45 p.m.

Diego Maradona has given his version of an exchange with an Asian fan that witnesses perceived as racist.

British television staff working in Spartak Stadium in Moscow during Argentina’s 1-1 draw with Iceland on Saturday reported seeing Maradona respond to South Korea fans calling his name.

On Twitter, BBC presenter Jacqui Oatley posted that Maradona “obliged with a smile, kiss and wave. Then pulled his eyes to the side in a clearly racist gesture.”

In a Facebook message early Sunday, the Argentina great says he saw “an Asian boy wearing an Argentina T-shirt.”

He adds: “I, from afar, tried to tell them how nice it seemed to me that even the Asians cheer for us. And that’s all, guys, come on.”

FIFA statutes prohibit acts of discrimination by teams, officials and fans at games it organizes.

In a response to The Associated Press, FIFA refers to its anti-discrimination rules without commenting on the incident.

Maradona also apologizes for smoking a cigar in the VIP seats, despite a FIFA ban on smoking at World Cup stadiums. ___ 12:20 p.m.

Moscow police are investigating a taxi crash that injured eight people, including two Mexican World Cup fans, when the driver plowed into pedestrians on a sidewalk near Red Square.

Video circulating on Russian social media and some news websites showed the taxi veering onto the sidewalk Saturday and striking pedestrians. The source of the video was unclear.

City police released a video Sunday of an interrogation session with a man identified as the Kyrgyz taxi driver, in which he says he briefly fell asleep at the wheel in the crash and accidentally accelerated. It was unclear whether the man spoke under duress.

The man says he hadn’t slept in 20 hours, and ran away after the accident because he was afraid that angry bystanders would kill him. He was later detained.

Moscow police would not comment Sunday on whether the crash would affect security measures for the World Cup, which is being held in 11 Russian cities over the next month. Among the security concerns has been the possible use of vehicles as weapons.

The Mexican Embassy told The Associated Press that the two injured female fans met with embassy representatives and were not hospitalized. The Mexican national soccer teams plays against Germany on Sunday in Moscow.
