I also think they tried way too hard to brush aside how Becca also did her husband wrong by lying and faking her death, causing not only him but also her whole family unnecessary grief and trauma. When she should have just explained to Butcher what happened, talked it out like adults and separate on equal terms (I highly doubt Billy would be down for raising his wife's rapist's child and I do not blame him and Becca didn't try to get an abortion as far as we know so she'd still probably keep it like in canon), and then she should have gone into Witness Protection.
Instead of rewarding Vought for enabling and allowing the assault to happen by gifting them a Homelander 2.0 on a silver platter.
Seriously, did she really think Vought was just going to let Ryan work as some hohum accountant in an office one day?
And they never let Billy call her out on how she broke his heart for pulling this shit and not addressing these issues she had with their marriage before all of this, just so she could martyr herself by raising Homelander Jr to maybe not be a walking nuke and destroy the world. It's ridiculous.
I would have more easily swallowed her bad decision making if only the story called her out on it, or had done an entire flip of the script by having her be a cheater and having Butcher come to terms that his beloved wife two timed him and he'd been fighting a crusade to avenge her over nothing. That's far more compelling.
I’ve been thinking about why I dislike Becca so much, and here’s what I came up with: The show tries to have its cake and eat it with her. See, throughout Season One we mostly see Becca through flashbacks from Billy’s eyes. He remembers their relationship as basically being perfect, he sees her as some kind of saviour who brought him back from the brink of destruction, and then Homelander swooped in and destroyed all of it, as he does.
When Billy reunites with Becca at the end of Season One and she’s with Homelander’s son, I thought the show was going to reveal that she’d actually cheated on Billy with Homelander - wouldn’t that have been shocking and provided some dimension to Becca? That actually their relationship wasn’t perfect and neither was she, and that Billy’s own anger issues and hatred towards the world and Supes in particular (I feel like the show’s implied outright that the real reason Billy hates Supes is because they remind him of his father, an abusive authority figure he feels weaker than and wants to take down. Homelander just compounded it with what happened with Becca.) Plus, assaulting Becca because he heard Billy talk smack about him kind of cements the idea that Becca wasn’t her own person so much as an extension of Billy that Homelander could hurt more easily. But instead it’s played totally straight, Becca is an innocent victim of Homelander’s and she chose to keep the child anyway and took on the task of raising him to be a good person.
And I think that’s where the show fell down with them, because Billy and Becca’s relationship just comes off as so two-dimensional compared to say, Hughie and Starlight where they constantly have to balance their contrasting lifestyles, how Hughie initially manipulated Starlight (albeit very reluctantly and on Billy’s instruction) and is responsible for killing one of her co-workers, while Hughie is the one source of normalcy in Starlight’s life and continues to see her as the superhero she wants to be, even while she’s commercialised and used as a puppet by Vought. But with Becca, even when she herself tries to point out that Billy’s always put her on a pedestal and his problems were serious long before they got together, the show still paints Becca like a saint. She’s basically Billy’s dream woman - like yeah, she’s a good mommy to Ryan but she still swears and smokes and has sex, guys! She’s so cool! All the Boys instantly love Becca when they meet her for no apparent reason - Hughie gushes over her being “awesome” even when she does jack all that is awesome (did he just like her because she’s a mother and Hughie’s walked out on him?), they constantly let Billy get away with some horrendous behaviour because he’s upset over her disappearance/wants Becca back, Billy consistently uses her as an excuse to be as horrible as possible (which is beautifully called out by Grace in Season 3) and Becca herself never does anything wrong - she’s treated like the perfect mother to Ryan, never shows any resentment or issues with her son even with the very traumatic circumstances of his conception, she ran away from Billy because she was ashamed and traumatised so she can’t be blamed for that, she’s forced to endure Homelander encroaching on her life because she can’t get rid of him and attempts to stand up to him, which only works because of Ryan, and in general she’s just a woman bad things happen to. Becca’s entire existence is basically defined by being a victim over and over again and her actions are driven either by her love for Billy or Ryan. She has no flaws or character development, dies a martyr and continues to get treated like one throughout Season 3 even though there was literally nothing special about Becca - by all accounts she’s a very boring and average person who just gets treated like a saint. Like even MM’s family and Robin feel more like real people despite their comparative lack of screentime, because MM’s wife leaves with MM’s daughter because of his lifestyle, a painful decision that no doubt hurt their daughter but was what she thought was best, and Robin’s onscreen for like five minutes but I felt like the trauma of her death made perfect sense for Hughie because he still expressed heavy doubt over killing Translucent even after her death and his relationship with A-Train is pretty interesting. Also, both MM’s wife and Hughie have managed to move on even when parting from their loved ones, but apparently neither Billy or Becca ever even looked at anyone else. (I get Becca was in an isolated compound and probably still dealing with the trauma of what happened to her, but it’s still like she was being ‘preserved’ until Billy could reach her somehow, she had no problems with sleeping with him immediately once they had five minutes alone.) And you know, Hughie doesn’t go around beating innocent people to death and excuses it because Robin died. I think I preferred Billy more when he was like this mysterious mentor figure to Hughie before his backstory got revealed as a pretty generic “muh wife died”, and even when it turned out she wasn’t dead it was still not all that interesting. We already know Billy was never going to be allowed to be properly reunited with Becca - you can’t decry the Seven and everyone else’s cruel, selfish, manipulative ways and then reward Billy for the same behaviour by giving him his wife back. (This is beautifully highlighted at the end of Season One where Hughie, Frenchie, Kimiko and MM all get their happy ending because they stuck together but Billy doesn’t because he chose to ditch them.)
Idk, whenever a show presents a character and goes, “Look! They’re so nice!”, that’s not enough for me to like them. I love Hughie but I like him for a lot more reasons than because he’s a nice person. First and foremost, you have to be interesting for me to take a liking to a character, and there’s absolutely nothing about Becca that is interesting to me. Also, this is super petty and based on totally subjective opinion, but I disliked Becca’s actress - she has this really whiny way of delivering her lines I found kind of grating to listen to, but that’s just me.

Y'know? After looking around and seeing all the insane white privilege shit people who "hate" Garth Ennis comics say about him or his comics and how attacked they feel when anyone tries to explain what satire is?
"A-Train is less redeemable than Homelander" "Hughie's mom is irredeemable but Homelander is redeemable" my fucking ass.
I can in 100% confidence say that they don't understand satire or storytelling in general and have no sense of basic reading or media comprehension. Without a doubt.
Most of them are just racist misogynistic ableist assholes who hide behind minorities and refuse to confront their internal bigotry. So they blame everyone else for it.
Ennis is a guy who wrote two whole comics where criticism against British transphobia was a whole ass feature and where boundaries and nuance and grief was such a important theme too. All while deep diving into how fucked up the U.S. military is and how even more fucked up weapons corporations are.
Oh and he also added a couple arcs criticizing homophobia and queerphobia and the people who hate on and make victims of queer people. In the same comics.
But "he" (said from the mouths of blatantly homophobic people that are constantly fetishizing and heteronormalizing gay people) is the one who's homophobic?
Interesting theory.
Exactly as convincing as the one claiming "Eric Kripke thinks women on top in a relationship are evil" despite that the literal first sex scene we get in the show (The Boys) has Becca Butcher on top. It's not like Billy's entire dynamic with her was highlighted with his being happily and consensually submissive to her and how perfectly fine and happy they were with this arrangement or how toxic masculinity is part of what was ruining it and hurting her. I'm sure...she was a villain right?? Queen Maeve also got on top and took control so she must have been a villain too!
This level of DUMB and self righteously full of shit and bad faith nonsense and lies makes me want to vomit.
I'm getting so tired of seeing so many stupid and arrogant people that very obviously come from a place of white privilege projecting their own insecurities and internalized prejudice onto artists and writers who are just trying to tell a story full stop. I'm so tired of it.
The Boys (comics and show) makes a lot of really phenomenal points but these dipshits can't actually be bothered to listen to any of them because they're too busy looking for things to be outraged at so they can virtue signal about it and how "superior" they or their ideas or whatever are to the author (who isn't even trying to broadcast what their views are they're trying to tell a story) when in reality they're just showing how fucking ignorant and privileged they are.
"gArTh EnNiS iS a EdGeLoRd"
No y'all are just some snobby and clueless outta touch privileged assholes that want the people around you in neat little bubbles that fit your perfect little world views so you don't have to think about confronting any that might be wrong.
If the existence of someone like "Big Bobbi" would make you uncomfortable because she's not a "uwu perfect little trans goddess girl" that fits the mold of what you think a trans woman should look like (as if all trans women should look act and think exactly alike cause that's not trans misogyny at all)?
The problem is you.
Get off the dead horse you forgot to feed and bury it already.
I'm so fucking tired of "brunch liberals/democrats". We need real fighters and people willing to listen and argue in good faith if we want actual change or progress. We need people willing to grow from being wrong instead of doubling down on it. It must be so nice to only have to focus on first world problems while you get to step on everyone else you pretend to champion for but I'm not that lucky and the same assholes would judge me and others for liking something unconventional that actually does pay attention and gives me a little comfort.
These people need to fuck off and leave us alone and stop using us as humans shields for their bullshit.

Replying from my Boys specific blog here, thank you for responding! I get the way you feel that way about Becca and Billy's relationship. It just doesn't feel like her character gets called out enough for what she did to the man she supposedly loved so dear, and her trying to justify it in some fucking martyr like speaking. As if Billy can't be trusted to do what he wants with his life. He had a right to know!
I feel like you said where she just wasn't the kind of girl who could or wanted to deal with Billy's myriad of issues. When the going got tough, she got going and left Billy in the lurch to hate himself over it. Becca always seemed to strike me as the type of dog owner to buy a breed like a wolfdog or a tibetan mastiff and expect it to act like a labrador retriever. Why not just end the relationship or, you know, TALK to your husband about how his behavior problems are concerning her and try to work through it together like a team? Or a partnership? Instead of throwing it into his face a decade later after he questions your ludicrous decision making? And maybe it's a very uncharitable way of reading it, but I think her ease in choosing a child she conceived out of SA over her loving but troubled husband had in no small part to do with said husband's not very buried daddy issues and childhood trauma and his not being too hot on the idea of having any of his own. Or at the very least, very touchy and sensitive about it. And instead of ever addressing this with him, chose to run away rather than confront these uncomfortable questions that may involve a break up. But that's what I get out of it.
Not to mention why she chose to fake her her death, sell herself and more importantly Ryan to the same company that caused all of this in the first place and have clear intentions on making another (more "controllable") Homelander out of Ryan, and create all of this suffering to her loved ones when could and should have just gone into witness protection I'll never know. She put Butcher, her family, and even Ryan through so much grief and pain and trauma for no reason all because she couldn't be honest with what happened to her and give the ones she loved the respect, agency and trust to handle that information. Same goes for the sheltering that ultimately damaged Ryan and his ability to be able to function as a person. Another reason why her and Vought's whole hideaway plan was doomed to failure. She should have come clean, gave him an ultimatum of either going into WP with her or ending it there, let him make his choice, and then go into protection. That would have prevented the entire 2nd season and her own death had she just used her head!
Billy deserved better and I'm still mad that they never had him start coming to terms with how Becca screwed him over and allow him to be justifiably angry at her. She clearly never trusted or respected him enough to be there for her when it mattered, even when he was willing to move heaven and earth for her. And she never did the same for him. Every time I try and analyze Becca and her choices, it all comes across to me that she was very weak willed and afraid of confrontation and I personally can't stand emotional cowardice. Which makes it hard to stomach whenever she and the topic of her and Billy's relationship is brought up in a positive light in either the show or in fanfiction.
To summarize, I think Becca was a very cowardly character and the story would have been better had they highlighted this and shown this for the flaw it is rather trying to make her like this amazing saintly woman and that Butcher's the one in the wrong for wanting revenge and justice for what had happened to her.
Sorry for the very long (and ranty) response, but I have a lot of thoughts on Becca Butcher and how the story deals with her and Butcher's relationship. I'm glad that you're trying to take what went wrong with Billy's previous relationship and show how it should have been with Addison and I'm interested to see how it goes in your story. I had stopped reading before cause I was disappointed by how fast it jumped from the characters being on tentative good terms to warm friends with the start of the series plot.
Can you talk about your thoughts on Billy and Becca's relationship? From what I've read from your comments and notes, you're not a big fan of them together and it's rare to find others besides myself in the Boys fandom willing to be critical of this ship and especially Becca herself in regards to how it turned out.
Yeah I can certainly try! I don’t speak on it a lot I don’t think because I’m not about to argue with someone I don’t even know and I’m not going to put down someone’s ship. I wouldn’t say I’m not a fan of them together, I love how Billy loved her and he did - I would say I’m not a fan of the way people put her or their relationship on a pedestal just like she said not to and they were clearly toxic for each other.
My feelings have a lot of different aspects - one I think she’s just badly written, I mean she’s totally fridged and there’s no basis in my opinion for her to be amazingly perfect? (Not that any woman has to!) So I don’t get why people think that. Two - my feelings while I’m watching emotionally are kind of different from my more academic opinions and are also different from Addison’s feelings on it - which in my head I’ve really gotten into so I can write my story authentically.
I will say additionally I have a degree in psychology and I’ve been in a happy successful relationship for 27 years (so far) from 16-43 so I know a little bit about what it takes. The things we have been through together and come out still completely committed and fully loving each other…
Emotionally, she annoys me and that’s just me. They’re trying to make her look like some amazing mother but the first chance she gets she’s spouting how she just ‘acts’ like ‘Carol fucking Brady’ like what? How is that in any way being a good mom. And I hugely disagree with her over sheltering. And she just wishes she was doing nothing on the couch smoking weed and eating Cheetos like huh? That’s the first thing she wants to say to Billy after 10 years? The way she acts about it rings so weird to me. Now BELIEVE ME I absolutely do those things too and enjoy it when my child is good for the night but I would never say it like that or think like that nor would that ever be my first conversation with my husband after hiding from him for a decade.
Billy was shown often (except for one weird one off line) to be there for her and love her but her whole attitude and the ease with which she left him leads me feel she was in it for a good time and not much else. The conversation about the spice girls concert is ridiculous. I can’t even fathom making my husband do something like that that he’s not into. We absolutely both have things we like to do together and then we have our own things too. Why would she force him to go to something he hates like that? Especially when she has her sister to enjoy it with. I don’t get it at all and it’s not how a relationship works.
In the fourth season the Becca hallucination tells Butcher that he shouldn’t betray Hughie even to save Ryan, there would be another way. And that’s what should’ve happened after she was r*ped. She left Billy because he would’ve gone on a rampage if she told him?? She thinks he wouldn’t if she disappeared? (He did.) How does that make sense. There’s always another way. Just like she says. I cannot even for a second imagine doing what she did to my husband. And yes I understand Billy has major problems but he was never shown to be beyond love and support. I don’t think she supported him as a partner at all. She was there because he was hot, sexy, he worshipped her and he took care of her. How did she take care of him, ever? I have a lot of Billy in me on the inside and I’ve said some very choice things in private messages but I won’t say them here haha <3
Now Addison is a better person than me, though of course she doesn’t know any of those examples, but she loves Billy unconditionally even though it’s going to be really really hard but her view of Becca is through Billy’s eyes so she really respects and protects that vision for Billy in a way and I kind of like exploring that too :) Latest chapter out here 🖤
hope that kind of makes sense, and thank you for your ask. just my thoughts and all ships should be happily whatever the shipper wants them to be because a ship can be anything

001 for Butchlander and 002 for Homie, because I love to be obvious!
Tackling them out of order.
002 | Homelander
* How I feel about this character:
I want to mush him and squeeze him and torture him and pet him and never let him out.
Oh and he’s a very interesting character and a joy to write. Somewhat as a result of the writer’s room, and somewhat as a result of Antony Starr’s acting.
* All the people I ship romantically with this character:
I’m a whore, I will read him having sex with just about anyone, and I could make a case for him getting romantic with many characters on the show. Top romantic (heh loaded word) ships are Butchlander, Homewell, Maevlander, Starlander.
* My non-romantic OTP for this character:
I honestly don’t know what this question means because all my ships are horny ones. But I wish we got more Black Noir being a father figure to him (I wish Noir had more to do in general before they decided to give him some background just before killing him off).
* My unpopular opinion about this character:
Hmmmm. I’m a little afraid that if Kripke writes him a “redemption arc” in the show they’ll botch it with some incoherent drivel à la s3e8 so I’d almost rather they just didn’t.
* One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:
I have more than one.
I’d rather see him depowered and live than die at the end, somehow.
I would have liked to see more of him trying to parent Ryan with Becca around.
I kind of wish he hadn’t killed Stillwell but mostly because I thought she was a cool character.
I wish he hadn’t taken over Vought because that decreases the chance we’ll ever see him operate outside of it.
* my OTP:
Billy Butcher reprogramming HL with tough, but genuine, love. And sex, definitely lots of sex. [refer to section below for much more word vomit about them]
* my cross over ship:
Heh, I think Makima from Chainsaw Man has a nice parallel to the Homewell dynamic. I’d read Batman x HL, I feel like Batman could deal with his bullshit effectively.
* a headcanon fact:
Homelander prefers his sexual partner be strong and wield soft power over him.
============================
001 | Butchlander
* when I started shipping it if I did:
Because I was watching the show very rapidly, I didn’t start shipping it outright until S1E8, but if I had a week between each episode it probably would have materialized no later than E6.
* my thoughts:
Scorchingly, achingly hot. The show canon is stingy with their onscreen time together, but each scene they meet in is glorious. One of the reasons I’m willing to overlook the inconsistent writing in s3 is that they are ramping up the butchlander element in the show. I love that they have ended up sharing a child while both being utterly unequipped to parent. I don’t remember any other enemyslash pairing setting that up and it’s so damn fun.
* What makes me happy about them:
I like to imagine scenarios where their respective traumas and defects (I don’t think they’re “the same”, kripke) fit together in such a complementary way that they end up accidentally helping each other become a little more emotionally functional.
* What makes me sad about them:
One of them lost his wife because of the other and that is a hard wound to heal.
* things done in fanfic that annoys me:
I don’t like when Billy cries too much. I don’t like when writers go all out with Butcher’s cockney but it sounds like Dick van Dyke (easy to criticize, hard to adhere to this rule). I’m more tolerant of different HL characterizations because I think canon has shown us more variety from him in different scenarios, but I tend to enjoy it less when he’s written as a sadist monster with nary an indication of any other emotions.
* things I look for in fanfic:
Generally prefer Bottom the Homelander [not because he has a better ass, but] because the fic is more likely to characterize both of them in ways I find more IC. Generally like when they at least start out antagonistic and hating each other if it’s a multichapter. Love when there’s an element of coparenting Ryan involved. Love when it’s an E rated fuckfest because [I’m here for the porn canon won’t give us, and] they are both presented as characters with energetic libidos.
* Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:
Honestly? I feel like they’re both likely to end up alone, because I feel bad for whoever ends up with them if they’re not a strong person. Billy with Maeve, as alluded to in the Maevlander post seems fine endgame to me. Butchie is a big fat nope for me, not only because of Annie but because it gives me incest vibes since he sees him as a younger brother. Billy with some strong woman like Rainer probably works. Homelander… needs someone who can spank him if he gets out line. If Victoria Neuman can become that person remains TBD.
* My happily ever after for them:
Haha, I’ll take almost any iteration where they end up together and parent Ryan. I’m intrigued by Billy getting upgraded with Compound V and how they’d keep from becoming a terrible powercouple of supe cunts. I’m intrigued by HL getting depowered and Billy having to rehab him into being a functional human being out of that mental wreckage. I’m intrigued by them staying as human x supe, with both of them having a weird love hate relationship with being involved with a “race” they generally looked down on.
* who is the big spoon/little spoon:
Billy is the big spoon. I will only entertain the thought of HL being the big spoon if it’s written in Russian for reasons I can’t quite fathom and must have something to do with early childhood traumas 😂
* what is their favorite non-sexual activity:
They are pretty different people in terms of pastimes in canon. I named enjoying the outdoors in another meme. I’d like to think they’d also both enjoy having (or aspiring toward having) a normal family life, raising a child as if they’re normal, well-adjusted adult men, doing normal domestic things. Emphasis on the as if.

Random Boys pet peeve: I really don’t like when people call Ryan, son of Becca, “Ryan Butcher”. Cause Billy didn’t consent to that, he wasn’t in the birthing room signing the birth certificate or signing legal papers claiming him as his. He didn’t even know the kid even existed or that Becca was still alive.
Plus, it’s a pretty shitty thing to give your son your husband’s name who you deliberately chose to abandon and fake your death from to have this kid. Because you didn’t want to sit down and have an honest discussion about what happened and give him the choice to stick around and help you raise this child or give the option of divorce and let both of you freely go your separate ways.
Just give him your maiden name. Since he’s Becca’s son above anything else.
Now if in the next few seasons, after Billy and Ryan’s relationship grows and Butcher decides to fully take Ryan under his wing and claim him as his, then yes he should be “Ryan Butcher” but not before then.

It’s too bad that people responding to this don’t seem to understand that just because someone makes and has a choice regarding their body or life doesn’t mean it’s a good one. It’s not “victim-blaming” to say keeping that baby is a bad decision, for the world at large and for her relationship with the man she supposedly loves the most. Ryan, however much you love or hate him, has the power to destroy the world, and is virtually unkillable like Homelander when the world is already being implicitly held hostage by Homelander and doesn’t have a solution to end him if he decides to enact that desire to destroy/take over the world. I think it’s too much of a risk to take on one child who’s already being born into a shitshow of a situation maybe not annihilating the planet some day when that could just not be a factor at all.
And Butcher, however you may think of him, deserved to know about this life-changing decision his wife was choosing, because it also directly affects him. Bringing a kid into relationship is always going to affect the partner, even outside of extreme cases like sexual assault resulting in it. He has a right to know, as her legal romantic partner if she keeps the kid, as its not his biologically so not his genetic responsibility nor it might not be what he wanted in general when getting into a relationship with her.
The biggest issue is her abandoning him and her family and not letting him have a choice and be able to make an informed decision about this massive change that affects the both of them and their relationship. If she was going to keep this kid, he had a right to know and the option to opt out of the relationship, and ending their marriage on amicable terms. Instead she caused more pain and trauma to all of them, including Ryan, by running away to Vought (the ones ultimately responsible for the tragedy and essentially rewarding them) instead of just going to the CIA and entering witness protection. That one choice led to her death and the emotional devastation of both her estranged husband and child. It didn’t need to happen.
I would very much like to know why butcher's wife (sorry I'm bad with names, was it Becca?) wanted to keep Homelander's child? I'm not saying she's responsible of the situation because she's not. But all this drama could have been easily avoided, If she had just lied to everyone about the father, and got an abortion... Literally didn't she think at all about how badly everything is going to go whatever she tries if she keeps the baby???even if she doesn't care about the fact that she's gonna have to live the rest of her life(?) in isolation with this kid, didn't she think about how her husband was going to react? Like 9 years endless misery, because your wife either was killed by homelander or she killed herself because of the rape... Yeah you're right he didn't deserve that.
Like she loved a fetus created by rape more than her husband??? She made the decision when she made to deal with the doctor... She knew the kid could become the next anti christ essentially but she chose to try and raise him right, when she couldve just exited this situation? Like yeah at this point I really believe that butcher deserves better :S
I'm not saying she's shitty person for getting raped or something, but she made the decision to keep the child and create the situation that just ruined their lives even more.

finished s2 of the boys here are some thoughts about the finale and the show in general (spoilers for s2 etc)
im not entirely sure where they're going with Dark AOC but it'd be cool if the message was like. even the most progressive people within the establishment want to maintain a constant sense of panic and prevent any material change bc then they lose their positions as well-paid, famous critics of the system. (a la pelosi, roe, fundraising)
im watching this show w/ my 16 yo cishet brother who asked me what a twink is bc maeve called hughie one. further proof that gay people were not involved in the writing of this show, that guy is not a twink. (exhibit number one was ashley(?) saying that butch/femme relationships r more accepted by heterosexuals)
women keep getting fridged left and right. becca has had the dubious honor of being fridged twice cuz butcher spent s1 having man pain about her being dead and now is going to have man pain about her being dead again
relatedly, i think it'd have been more Growth-y for butcher if they'd just let her and ryan go into hiding. cuz he wasn't willing to let that happen earlier in the season or even earlier in the ep. but whatever, this sort of thing happened on spn all the damn time and i'm a fool to expect any different from eric kripke lmao
i feel like they rushed the big expose of stormfront a bit. we never really get a chance to zoom out and see the public reaction to her past or even get to properly celebrate her death bc there r so many other things happening.
maeve being deus ex machina twice in one episode PLUS her saving starlight in the previous ep felt a lot like lazy writing
i do like the rainbow capitalism plot tho
it does seem like they r going the "you can't reform the system from the inside" route which is pretty based for a tv show

Everybody finna be disappointed when Billy Butcher betrays Ryan, Kimiko, Starlight, and Maeve. He's gonna harm them for real for real because they're gonna go "fuck your found family trope", and "Ax-Crazy" trope for Billy. It's like having a transphobe only using transgenders for their own gain and only being nice to them because they can get what they want being friendly with them and transphobes are least likely to no longer be transphobic, since they don't want to change their minds about transgender people at all. He can still have character development and still be a scumbag
Okay, so this has been sitting in my asks for a few days now and it's really hard for me to reply to, ngl.
I am indeed scared this might be a path Butcher's going to take. He does have an inherent hatred for supes and we don't know yet to which extent he blames Ryan for Becca's death.
So, yes, he can have character development and still be a scumbag. It's true. And I know that Butcher's not a good person. He does bad things and often uses those around him for his personal gain. I'm the last person to deny that.
But I do think he has some redeeming qualities, too. If he didn't his character just wouldn't work like it does. My fingers are crossed, but you're right anon, I would be disappointed.
I do not want to go into the transgender discourse here, because it's such a delicate and important subject and I do not feel properly equipped to make any educated comments.
I am always open to talk about these kind of things, even if it's a bit more difficult than simple fangirling. We need to be critical with the media we consume and the characters we enjoy. I'm obviously a Butcher girl, but I am also accutely aware of his flaws and bad qualities.
Hopefully, this was an at least somewhat appropriate reply.

I love end of year lists because I like consensus, rankings and numbers. But consensus is all based on who gets to rank, and the people who get the most access to major publication rankings are white men, so the numbers are tainted by white supremacy, misogyny, and many other forms of bigotry.
Which makes it even more interesting to see what gets ranked where.
Here’s a Google Sheet I made of all the lists and I created a formula that basically measures how many times an album placed on a list as well as how high it placed on that list. I’m going to keep updating this list as it’s not done, but it’s fun to play around with right now!
According to my formula and the critics, the top 10 albums of 2020 (in order) are:
#1: Fetch the Bolt Cutters •• Fiona Apple
#2: RTJ4 •• Run the Jewels
#3: folklore •• Taylor Swift
#4: Future Nostalgia •• Dua Lipa
#5: Punisher •• Phoebe Bridgers
#6: Set My Heart on Fire Immediately •• Perfume Genius
#7: Saint Cloud •• Waxahatchee
#8: Heaven to a Tortured Mind •• Yves Tumor
#9: Women in Music Pt. III •• HAIM
#10: Rough and Rowdy Ways •• Bob Dylan
I also have a fun, unranked albums list brewing. I’ll release that at the very end of the year.
Click below for all of the publication lists!

Babysitting Butcher Chapter 56
Reacting to what Ryan said wouldn’t work. At least not in the way that either Billy or I would naturally do. Instead, I asked him to explain which of his powers he’d asked for them to inhibit, while Billy asked, just as carefully, who performed the operation. It wasn’t difficult to get the information, Ryan was proud of his choice, no matter how painful it was for me to hear a child tell me that he neutered a natural part of himself instead of learning to control it.
I was afraid, honestly, as Billy and I prepared to leave of how differently he and I would see Ryan’s choice. I knew how Billy felt about supes, I had no wool over my eyes about the man I loved, but Ryan was a child. He wasn’t old enough to make this type of choice, and I hoped that Billy could see that, but I feared that, as his guardian he might think it was the right one.
Billy didn’t simply let Ryan hug him, he actually participated in the embrace, murmuring to the boy as I stood apart to give them privacy. I was surprised when Ryan wrapped his arms around me right after. My fingers slid through his silky hair and I smiled as he thanked me for coming back to see him, and for bringing Billy with me. I told him we’d be back again the following Sunday, but he didn’t release me, holding on just a bit longer, and breathing in deeply it seemed.
“Are you alright?” I whispered, my nose almost in his hair, our heights weren’t that far off. He hummed and I sighed at the realization of just how starved for nurturing Ryan really was. Squeezing him a little tighter, I let my eyes meet Billy’s as the young boy who bore his last name clung to me.
Leaving the second time was marginally easier than the first only because Billy was with me and made no bones about weaving a threat into our parting with Ms. Davos and her companion. Promising that we’d be back Sunday, that Ryan should be ready to see us, and that we might just be going out - we left. We were leaving the darkening mock community before either of us spoke to one another.
“He had them put them in himself, Ronnie.” Billy’s voice carried across the minimal road noise that the car made as he drove us home. “Ryan chose to -”
“To neuter himself,” I agreed, with less pleasant terms than I felt Billy planned on using. He wouldn’t even alter Terror, but Ryan - a ten year old little boy was doing it to himself. “He let someone put chips inside of himself to keep a part of what is a piece of him naturally, Billy, at bay.” I heard him sigh. “I know you think this is an answer to a problem, I do, but Ryan isn’t like the other supes, he WAS born this way. And instead of learning to control his powers, or harnessing them, he’s choosing to -” I couldn’t continue, the idea of it hurt too much.
The silence between us grew, but it wasn’t tense. Not yet.
We stopped at my parents’ to pick up Terror and Mom seemed to pick up on the undercurrent between us. While Billy was talking to Dad and playing with “our boy”, she pulled me aside and asked me why I was so pale.
“It was a tough visit,” I sighed, thinking about Ryan and how his arms had clung to me. Mom waited, the patience of a parent and the stare of a woman who wasn’t going to let me off on the bare minimum. “Ryan made a choice that I don’t think he’s old enough to have made.” She nodded and I went on. “Billy might disagree.”
Mom gave me a half smile. “You two haven’t REALLY argued as a couple yet, have you?” I shook my head, thinking that my freak out at the hospital probably didn’t count. “Just remember that you love one another, Ronnie, and that you’re better together.” She pulled me into a hug and sighed. “He’s a rough one, but a good one, I think.”
“Yeah,” I met Billy’s gaze when Mom released me, he was smiling at me and that dimple of his was peeking out. “Yeah, he is.”
Terror was snuggled between us, not as exhausted as he’d be if he had spent the night with my parents, but content that Billy and I were taking him home. We were quiet as Billy drove us, before he could ask, I told him that I had everything at home for dinner so he drove straight without stopping.
When we arrived, our pup was ready to run, but instead of going ahead with him, Billy pulled me to him and kissed me hard and deeply. As I pulled back and looked up, he smiled down at me. “I know we’re gonna talk about it, Ronnie,” he was so quiet I wasn’t sure Terror could hear him. “And I know it’s gonna be hard, but I love you and I wanted you to know that.”
“Did you eavesdrop on me and Mom?” I tilted my head and stared at him. His eyes were twinkling. “I love you too, Billy Butcher.” He leaned down for another kiss, but I stopped him. “If you keep this up, we’re gonna starve and Terror’s gonna run off and eat a poor rabbit.”
I threw dinner together, tempting though it was to make a couple HotPockets each and make do, and was waiting when my boys were back in the house. Billy hung up his coat and met me at the kitchen table. He sat down and picked up his fork.
“Do we talk while we eat?” I asked, picking up my own. “Or do we wait?”
Billy had popped the first bite into his mouth, but he didn’t let a little thing like that stop him from answering me. “Let’s get it over with.”
Shaking my head, I sighed and took my own first bite. He swallowed his first, and so he got to start talking first - damn the luck of that draw.
“Look, Ronnie, I know you think that Ryan ain’t old enough to choose,” my eyes flashed to his and he nodded to show he knew he hit the nail on the head. “But it’s his body, ain’t it?” I rolled my eyes, and he went on. “You didn’t see what he did to her, not in person, not in that moment -” his crows feet, usually I’d associate them with his laughter, but not now, not while he was thinking of that day, their shared loss. “If it gives him some peace -”
“Peace?” I stared at him, wondering if that’s really what he thought. “Ryan wants a home and a family, Billy. He wants to have the nurturing that he lost because he didn’t know how to control a natural part of him, a part of him that he had no idea how to control because -” I stopped, looking down at my plate. I wondered if I could ever actually say anything critical about Becca and her parenting to Billy? “Ryan was born with these powers, Billy. He was born with this inside of him, and instead of anyone teaching him how to control them, he was left in the dark.”
Billy was waiting to stare at me when I looked up from my plate. He looked patient, but I could see the tension in him, the knife’s edge that he seemed balanced on. “After what he did to her -” there it was, the reasoning for why she wouldn’t have been willing to even acknowledge Ryan’s powers. “How would you have dealt with it?” A challenge, clear and simple.
“That’s not fair, but I guess I should have expected it.” I pushed my plate away, no longer hungry. “All I know, Billy Butcher, is that ignoring a natural part of a child because of one of the parent’s flaws does NOTHING other than scar that child. Not physically, but emotionally and psychologically.” I didn’t drop my gaze from his. He wanted to bait me, fine, he had my attention. “Ryan is starving for affection. His only other connection, aside from Homelander, is you.” I let that little nugget sink into his thick skull. “And he can fucking hear as well as his biological sperm donor so I imagine that at some point he picked up on your not so fucking quiet feelings about supes. So gee, Billy, I wonder why Ryan BUTCHER would allow some asshole to experiment on him with power inhibiting chips?”
And, ignoring my mom’s advice, because honestly I felt like Billy had struck a lower blow than I did, I picked up my almost full plate and tossed the food in the disposal then put it in the dishwasher.
“You can find a blanket and extra pillow in the linen closet if you want to sleep on the sofa,” I reminded him. “Or one of the many fucking guest rooms are made up for visitors, because your ass is NOT welcome in our bed tonight.” And with that final shot, I left the kitchen and went to our bathroom and took a shower to try to wash off the day, then curled into our bed, which was too fucking big without his huge ass body and his bigger than life ego and cried myself to sleep.

Can you do an analysis on Homelander? His name is obviously a play on words of homeland security.
I mean, I’m not so great at in-depth breakdowns but I have read the comics and seen both seasons of the show. So I have some ideas concerning the franchise.
Homelander is obviously the criticism of the all-American hero, the Captain America and the Superman that is so often co-opted for jingoistic purposes.
He’s a corporate super-soldier raised to be their Nationalistic icon, to represent the Red-White-and-Blue that basically embodies all the horrible things about America. He’s racist, sexist, ableist, entitled, self-important, violent, sexually repressed to a creepy degree, and everything that is wrong with this country especially with the current MAGA movement.
The original series was dealing with the Bush Era, the War on Terror and the jingoistic ideas going around at that time. In fact, the Plane Crash in the comics wasn’t just a random plane. It was 9/11, with The Seven fucking everything up and causing the planes to crash into the Brooklyn Bridge.
Homelander is that entitled, red-blooded American Man that has never been told “No”, that thinks he’s god’s gift to the universe.
In the comics, it wasn’t the Deep that assaulted Starlight. It was Homelander, along with Black Noir and A Train. Homelander got off on humiliating and tormenting her. He randomly did horrible things, because HE COULD.
He’s the logical progression of the Nazi Ideals that created Stormfront, his predecessor.
An interesting thing, though, is that the series has abandoned the original storyline in several ways.
The first is that Becca Butcher and her child survived, unlike the comics. So we have the entire plotline about Becca and Ryan. Homelander trying to be a father, terrorizing Becca further and wanting Ryan to be just like him.
But we also have another very surprising change:
In the comics, the REAL villain wasn’t Homelander.
It was Black Noir.
In the comics, Black Noir isn’t simply another member of the Seven. He’s a clone of Homelander, secretly raised and trained and placed in the Seven as a failsafe in case Homelander ever went off the rails. His purpose for existing was to kill Homelander.
But.....Homelander didn’t go off the rails.
So Black Noir started putting on his suit, and doing horrible things. He started an elaborate game, gaslighting Homelander with evidence that he was doing horrible things he couldn’t remember doing. Driving him insane, little bit by bit, until he snapped and went on the rampage of the series finale.
....then Black Noir takes off his mask and gloats over all the bad things he did. Raping Becca Butcher. Killing people for his amusement. All while wearing Homelander’s face, and getting him to think he’d done it. A
And then he kills Homelander, and is killed by Billy in turn.
Obviously, that particular thing is off the table now. A lot of people think Ryan may gain the storyline of being Homelander’s eventual foe.

5 Books that Got Me Interested in Werewolves
I like werewolves. Both of my current book series, Heaven's Heathens MC and the Dawn Series include werewolves. And if you've read any of my previous blog posts, you'll know that The Lone Prospect (Heaven's Heathens MC #1) was inspired after watching the Expendables 2 during a binge watching of Sons of Anarchy.
My interest in doing werewolves instead of say vampires came from reading a lot of books about werewolves, where in the series werewolves weren't the main focus. I wanted a series of books that wasn't expressly romance that focused on werewolves and werewolf dynamics and adventures and being a werewolf was more an accepted part of life than "woe is me, I am a monster."
Monsters more often than not have human faces. See Frankenstein.
These are not necessarily recommendations. But if you like werewolf books and aren't picky, you may like these.
1. Bitten by Kelley Armstrong
Elena Michaels is the only female werewolf that has ever survived the change. A journalist good at investigating, she used her skills to track down rogue werewolves and kill them. Until she got tired of the violence the life required no matter how much she loved the male members of her pack. She's been trying to live like a human, but an old enemy is about to resurface threatening the pack she loves. Now, she's being drawn back into that world.
This was Kelley Armstrong's first novel. I liked the original cover and that's why I bought it. It focused completely on werewolves and was an interesting start to a new series. Book 2 started introducing other races and after a while I gave up on it when it focused exclusively on the young witch that was also introduced in book 2, Stolen. Bitten doesn't really hold up to any sort of in depth critical thinking when it comes to werewolves. Why is Elena the only female werewolf? She's also an orphan who has been sexually abused and then her boyfriend changed her without permission. I can see why she left the guy. I don't care how hot he's supposed to be. My last gripe for this book was Elena really felt like a stand in for the author. They are both Canadian and the politics commentary was really heavy handed. Maybe it was supposed to make the book feel relevant in 2001. It just made me grimace a bit.
2. Fool Moon by Jim Butcher
Business has been slow, no dead, for Harry Dresden, Chicago's only professional Wizard. Until Karen Murphy comes with a case of brutal murder. Mutilated corpse, strange paw prints and a full moon. It's going to take all of Harry's knowledge and skill to get to the bottom of which werewolf group is performing the murders. And the answer may be closer than he thought.
Fool Moon was Jim Butcher's second Harry Dresden Case File. He hadn't quite hit his writing stride yet. (That didn't happen until book 3.) In the book, Jim Butcher went through and used about every single type of werewolf he could think of to blow the readers off the scent (see what I did there) of who the real murders were. He used a lot of "classic" Universal studios werewolf lore and lore from other werewolf, lycanthropy, berserker type werewolves as well. And then he pretty much dropped the whole werewolf thing like hot potatoes in the books after this in order to pursue his Black Council and Winter Court Fae big story lines. And the times he does end up using the werewolves, it can be rather offensive, such as werewolves going into heat and the general way he describes the female werewolves. (He also has this problem with most of his female characters. I digress.) It was a good starting point for me at least to look at the different werewolf types and go research more on my own.
3. A Fistful of Charms by Kim Harrison
Rachel Morgan's love life has never been that great. Now, Nick, a former boyfriend who cut and run needs Rachel's particular skills as a runner. A thief, he's stolen an artifact that could give the werewolves more power over the vampires and now he's been caught. It's up to Rachel to find the artifact and free him from the werewolves. The problem is, he's not in Cincinnati, but up in Michigan and on an island in the middle of one of the Great Lakes. And it's going to take more than a few magical spells and wishful thinking to get him out alive.
This was book 4 of Kim Harrison's Hollows Series. In one of the previous books, she'd made a one off character, an insurance adjuster, who was a werewolf. Kim Harrison is not someone who really outlines her books in advance, so this insurance adjuster suddenly became a lot more important and so did werewolves for this fourth book. Because Rachel Morgan is so caught up in vampire, demon and fae politics, other than some consequences of what happened because of this book and her joining the insurance adjuster's pack for ... insurance... purposes, after this, werewolves were dropped. So, this book was the best look at the way werewolf packs worked in her world. I liked it because there was one part of the book where it was clear that the lead female of the pack had as much power as the male leader. And in other books, there were female pack leaders as well. But the series became very much about Rachel Morgan, her love life and how she was so special. I read until the last book, but left feeling very unsatisfied as a reader. But this wasn't that bad of an adventure! I especially loved Jenks in this book. Jenks is one of my favorite characters in the entire series. This was "his" book so to speak.
4. Moon Called by Patricia Briggs
Mercedes Thompson is part Native American, part mechanic and all coyote shifter. When a scruffy werewolf teen ends up at her auto shop looking for a quick job and a place to sleep, she helps him because of the werewolves that raised her. When his dead body ends up on her doorstep. She goes looking for who killed him and ends up getting entangled again with the man she thought she loved and had to leave them to get away from it all.
Moon Called was a promising first book, some Native American anachronisms aside. (Becca did a better review of this than I ever could.) As far as the series went, since Mercy lived right next door to a werewolf and later ended up dating him (and I won't spoil whether that worked out or not) the books had plenty of werewolf story lines. And if you like your werewolves to be OCD barely controlled anger management monsters controlled by the patriarchy then sure, this is the series for you. Sure, there were times Mercy tried/tries to address the problem of male dominant packs but that doesn't and isn't the focus of the books. Most of the books are how Mercy somehow gets involved in another species like vampire or fae's trouble despite the fact she's a relatively low powered coyote shapeshifter. There's no real reason why Mercy is "special" and everyone wants her, she just is. These werewolves have absolutely no basis in any sort of wolf science. Being the series is so werewolf focused, it started to drive me bonkers after a while. I gave up when another "bad thing" happened to Mercy after 10 books. (The Rape happens in book 3 btw. Just a warning.)
5. Master of Wolves by Angela Knight
Officer Faith Weston, head of the Clarkston PD K-9 department is still reeling from losing her previous dog. She's hoping that an all business front and a new dog will help her move on and keep the attention of her lewd boss away from her. Her new dog Rambo was big and tough and didn't give her any crap. Too bad Rambo was more than he seemed. Jim London, bounty hunter and werewolf, is certain that the murder of his friend Tony has been covered up by the Clarkston police department. There's only one way to find out and that's to go undercover and his dog form is perfect for the job. Faith Weston though is bringing out the animal in him.
Okay, yes, spoiler alert, Master of Wolves is a romance novel. I don't read a lot of these and when I do they tend to be primarily fantasy focused. I've read Terry Spears (one book and no more, no, never again, bad wolf science, BAD,) Thea Harrison and a few others, but Angela Knight was the one I picked up back in 2006 when looking for werewolf novels to read. There are a few moments of "I don't know what Angela Knight was thinking" when it comes to the scenes about Jim being a dog and... thinking like a man hound dog about Faith and later Faith seems okay with it? Maybe it was supposed to be funny but, yeah. 4 of the 9 books in Angela Knight's series focus on werewolves and for the most part they are pretty much very formulaic romance novels and the werewolf pack dynamics were once again patriarchal and based on bad wolf science. Really, it was more the fact that this book was focused on werewolves and solving a mystery and using all the forms that the werewolf had to do it that stood out to me.
Five different books, five different treatments of werewolves, though most are the same "werewolves are monsters" based on no good modern science about wolves. But they each had different facets that got me thinking about how I would write a werewolf focused novel if I ever wrote one. Then I did and it's called The Lone Prospect, available in ebook (3.99) and paperback (7.99) on Amazon.

i'm gonna have to side with anon causa this passage right here:
And look, it's fine if you want to romanticize this idea for fics but that is the one and only place it should be framed this irresponsibly. Because it is a bad idea with horrible implications that shouldn't be rose tinted into something adorable just because there are a few moments Homelander isn't pushing Ryan off a roof.
i think the issue they have with this idea is more the framing/messaging/responsibility of it. logically, it just wouldn't work for canon (homie and butcher were always headed for collision course, bring on the carnage chaos~<3<3<3), but the video you brought up and canon itself aren't relevant here. or they are, just not how you think.
the boys is satirical, but they're normally pretty good on making a point with that satire/framing it responsibly. for example, the video you linked is one i find hilarious, but it's framed as a dark joke showing that it is terrible that homelander has ryan (the kid is literally drawing his dad standing over a bunch of dead bodies i--)
unless the satire has gone over your head, there's no real reason to be upset about that. even the show portrays homelander having ryan as something with imminent danger/bad things to come. and that in itself is *good*/appropriate/responsible messaging.
and this is something to consider, because there definitely have been some let's say 'complaints' about the *framework* of the scenario, even if it's being done appropriately. you SHOULD be concerned for ryan's well being and soul cause the kid lost his mama and is now with someone who shouldn't have him. and that IS what the show portrays so they got that much right.
expecting the *framing* to change or actually *honestly* portray something 'wholesome' instead of satirical/criticized as a bad thing is where the 'romanticism'/rose-tindedness comes into play. and i know the desensitization of the gruesomeness of the show plays a huge part in that.
i could definitely see something like this ending up as a parody sitcom style cartoon done in a dark way on diabolical. and while i might find it hilarious, i'm gonna be upfront and say most of fandom who say they want it would HATE it.
it wouldn't be done to appease you, it would be done to *make fun of* you (especially if there was a whole ass petition if i'm being honest...) and probably purposely framed in the worst way it could be, maybe even use the ugliest art it could, just to drive the point home. or even use dual styles where one character is romanticizing the scenario while the other is living a nightmare (won't lie, that does sound kinda cool as far as horror scenarios go)
maybe it's an au where billy is actually dead and homie's lost his mind (this is honestly the most likely option, dead rotting puppet butcher with insane homie who won)
butt i digress, much like the show, i wouldn't be expecting this to be something you'd feel good about at the end of the day. the becca thing is likely just criticizing the hypocrisy of challenging the way she's written but then frequently wanting/asking for worse for her (even in death)
granted, two things can be true at the same time, but you do gotta admit it's gonna come off a certain way. i do take way more issue with the way fandom (not necessarily this part but could be better) treats her than the show itself tho
Co-parenting Butchlander is a bad idea for canon even if done in the tamest way possible and I feel like this needs to be said because this shit is getting out of hand to disturbing levels.
Homelander is the rapist.
He doesn't have custody of Ryan. He doesn't and shouldn't have rights to him. After getting Becca (Ryan's actual parent) killed, and against her wishes, he has stolen or in other words kidnapped Ryan.
Ryan is not his to take and shouldn't be viewed as such. Just think rationally for a split second on this.
Do you think a rapist should have rights to custody of a child they force on someone just because that person chose to keep it or god forbid, couldn't manage to get an abortion? Do you think it would be okay for that rapist to then kill the mother or get her killed and steal the child simply because he wants to be a dad?
That's not cute. It doesn't matter what the rapist's backstory is, that's horrifying and wrong and so gross on so many levels.
And you cannot complain about canon treating Becca badly when you advocate for this in canon.
This would be so much worse by make her nothing more than an incubator for the kid of the guy who raped her and then steals her husband. And that is disgusting.
Can we not forget that Ryan and Becca are both victims here, for once?
Romanticize it all you want in fics. It does not belong in canon.
Context link: My dumb crack idea for a Diabolical episode that Anon is referring to
“Co-parenting Butchlander is a bad idea for canon”
Maybe it doesn’t really matter for this discussion, but : I wouldn’t consider Diabolical “canon”. They had an episode about a woman talking to her poop, with a Deep cameo because it involved a sewer. It’s not canon.
“He doesn’t have custody of Ryan”
Well… okay, this is interesting, Ryan is in his custody as of end of season 3, whether HL has legal custody or not. In fact, NYS law is particularly lax and kind of messed up in the sense that you need a rape conviction to be deprived of your parental rights to a child that is genetically yours (and wasn’t made via a sperm bank). So not that it changes things ethically, but legally speaking HL may have legal claim here until someone convicts him of rape or CPS finds his parenting criminally negligent/inappropriate.
“Do you think it would be okay for that rapist to then kill the mother or get her killed and steal the child simply because he wants to be a dad?”
Do I think it’s “okay” ethically, morally, legally? Hmmmmmm, idk, what do you think I think, Anon? I’ll clear it up and say: no, I don’t . But am I watching and enjoying a show that already portrays this fucked up scenario? Yes, I am.
“You cannot complain about canon treating Becca badly when you advocate for this in canon”
Were you up in arms about this Amazon video?
youtube
Because it’s along the same ‘teehee this is so fucked up’ humor lines that you are clearly revolted by. If you were, then okay, at least you are consistent. And I’m going to chalk it up to different tolerance/interest levels about fucked up scenarios.
Come off anon if you still think I’m being glib and “romanticizing” dead incubators. I promise I’m not that scary to talk to off-anon. I even promise to hear you out if I’ve misunderstood the problem you have with my hypothetical dumb spin-off plot that wouldn’t be part of canon. You’re allowed to disagree.

boys thoughts
- well i just don’t like graphic violence
- for once in my life the dialogue doesn’t read like it was written by a 5th grader who just discovered swearing
- i like that a-train found out stormfront is a nazi (like literally a nazi. not a neo nazi. a god damn wwii nazi) and his reaction was like “okay now let me back into the mega-conglomerate” absolutely zero critical thought up there
- also a-train being the only member of the seven who does the Super Drug and simultaneously the only black member of the seven is....................................... fascinating
- black noir is literally hilarious in every non-combat scene he’s in i wish he weren’t like evil or whatever
- speaking of which why is the aoc lady evil apparently. like oh my god
- this show REALLY likes to smugly tell you “look how ridiculous corporations look when they hit you with the #girlboss marketing” when it’s really sitting there. with just about all of its female characters being either victims or abusers
- also another mute asian girl™ ................................ Wow
- this is unrelated but the art for the comics boys is soooooo ugly
- i hope to god that by season 3 butcher has like. evolved personality-wise because one of THE most annoying things about fox/netflix lucifer is that lucifer CONSTANTLY does things that hurts or upsets the people he cares about and they’re like “nooo.......... lucifer that hurt or upset me............” and he would be like “actually i think that i don’t like hurting or upsetting the people i care about and i should Not do this thing again” and then next episode he does the exact same god damn thing and i’m like kind of getting those vibes from butcher but we’ll see what happens
- his coat’s sexy tho
- becca’s death................... sigh
- repeating the point about graphic violence because WOW this show is bad about it
- anyway it was fine. it has like 3.5 stars on prime and frankly that’s about where i am too

The Boys: 7 Things Amazon's Show Does Better (And 3 Things The Comic Does Better)
When it was originally written, The Boys comic was an edgy ode to disillusionment, a cautionary tale that meeting your heroes and realizing your dreams would inevitably end in crushing disappointment and lifelong failure. Filled with pages of gratuitous violence, sexual depravity, and verbal hostility, you either loved it or your hated it.
Amazon Prime's new series The Boys takes the vital elements of the series and chucks the rest, favoring responsible writing over shock value, and bringing in some modern sensibilities to temper the comic's more outrageous tone. The result is a completely bingeable show about celebrity superheroes that emit altruism on the outside, while being dangerous narcissistic psychopaths behind closed doors. Here are 7 things it gets right, and 3 things it gets wrong.
10 BETTER: TRANSOCEANIC FLIGHT 37
When Vought International's plan to put superheroes in the military faces federal resistance, Homelander decides to provide incentive. In the show, he learns a transoceanic flight has been hijacked and goes with Queen Maeve to save it. He accidentally destroys the controls with his laser-eyes and ultimately decides the mission is a bust, leaving every passenger on Transoceanic Flight 37 to die.
This was much more gruesome in the comic, and involved a botched rescue of the flights intended to strike the Twin Towers during the September 11 terrorist attacks. The terrorists are dealt with, but the planes end up crashing into the Brooklyn Bridge.

9 WORSE: THE DEEP
The Deep (Aquaman lite) featured in the series is an egocentric, selfish prick that constantly tries to compensate for his lack of self-worth through bedding women and relentlessly seeking Homelander's approval. He's Starlight's personal hero and he sexually assaults her in their first encounter.
In the comics, The Deep was the most grounded and business-savvy of the Seven, and never touched Starlight (that was a team effort by A-Train, Homelander, and Black Noir). He also wasn't nearly as cringey as The Deep in the show because he was known to be mature and level-headed.
8 BETTER: COMPOUND V
In the show, Compound V is the secret serum that some superheroes take to give them an "edge" and augment their superpowers. A-Train uses it to remain the "fastest man alive", but ends up getting addicted to it. It's been suggested Starlight was pumped full of it as a child to ensure she'd become a superhero later in life.
In the comics, The Boys used it to inject themselves so they could take on superheroes in a fair fight. By giving it to the superheroes as an additional edge over The Boys, it raises the stakes even higher, makes The Boys extreme underdogs, and makes the superheroes even more diabolical.
7 WORSE: BLACK NOIR
The series doesn't do a whole lot with the character of Black Noir (Batman lite). The most mysterious member of the Seven, the show doesn't accurately convey whether Noir seeks the sanctity of the shadows by choice, or that his silence is because of his being mute rather than part of his mystique.
The comics keep Black Noir mysterious up to a point, but he does more in the first few issues of the series than all eight episodes of the show. Black Noir is capable of the same sort of despicable violence as Homelander, and worse. Hopefully Season 2 will make him a more meaningful part of the Seven and the overall story.
6 BETTER: HOMELANDER
Antony Starr has gone to great lengths to embody Homelander in his onscreen incarnation, perfectly mimicking his impetuous and unpredictable nature. One minute, he's smiling brightly and chatting with fans, the next he's erupting with psychotic violence on a member of his own team for destroying their public image.
The Homelander of the comics threw wild tantrums which, when combined with his powers, did make him wholly unpredictable, but also childish. A compromise had to be made between the extreme of his comic book persona and a reasonable sociopath on screen, and we feel The Boys series struck a believable balance.
RELATED: The Boys: 10 Reasons Why Homelander Is Scarier Than Thanos
5 WORSE: STILLWELL
While inherently there was no problem with changing the character of Stillwell from a man to a woman, it did present some complications for the narrative of the series. Because Madelyn Stillwell becomes pregnant, she has a weakness (her child). James Stillwell has no apparent weakness; he's a cold-hearted bureaucrat.
Madelyn Stillwell dies because of her weakness. She doesn't make it past the first season, despite her corporate acumen and resourcefulness. In the comics, Stillwell is a major antagonist the entire series run, for both the Seven and The Boys. He represents all the avarice and greed of a profitable mega-corporation, distilled into a single man.
RELATED: 10 Greatest Supervillains You've (Probably) Never Heard Of
4 BETTER: THE FEMALE
In the series, The Female is one of the most essential of The Boys because she's been injected with Compound V. Kidnapped by a terrorist group and force-fed the serum by her guerrilla compatriots, she's a petite girl that can rip your face off. She was a byproduct of Vought International's desire to create supervillains only its heroes could eradicate.
In the comics, she accidentally eats some Compound V as a baby and develops her powers, but there isn't the same level of nuance to her origins as in the series, when she's an innocent bystander of a much larger plan. She's never even given a name.
3 BETTER: STARLIGHT
When we met Starlight in the series, she's an idealistic young woman who's dreamed of being a superhero her entire life. She's trained relentlessly to become a part of the Seven, and when she finally achieves her goal, her fiction is shattered when she's sexually assaulted by The Deep and learns her powers may not even be real. Her disillusionment is a driving force behind her learning to believe in herself, not external saviors.
In the comics, Starlight is much more meek, and it takes a long time for her to stand up for herself. Critics have attributed much of this to author Garth Ennis and his depiction of women in general throughout the series as damsels in distress rather than capable of taking care of their own business.
2 BETTER: SEXUAL ASSAULT
The Boys doesn't shy away from the real life severity of sexual assault. Sexual assault is featured prominently in different ways, and there are ramifications and repercussions, and it isn't there for it's own sake; it always drives the story, whether it involves Starlight's assault by The Deep, The Deep getting assaulted by a female fan, or Homelander and Butcher's wife.
In the comics, author Garth Ennis (who wrote Preacher) was often accused of not being able to draw a clear enough distinction between sexual assault and just sexual acts in general, peppering the pages of his work with gratuitous titillation that wasn't relevant to the narrative.
1 BETTER: BECCA BUTCHER AND THE SUPER BABY
In the series, the entire reason that Billy Butcher is hunting superheroes is because of what happened to his wife, Becca Butcher. Homelander sexually violated her, and as a result of their abhorrent union she became pregnant. Billy believes she died in childbirth but as we come to see, she's alive (as is her super son) and under protection from Vought.
In the series, Becca still dies in childbirth (for real), and the super baby is actually killed by Billy himself. Billy as a character is entirely more gruesome in the comics, but the series allows him to be a more complex character, especially now that his entire reality has been shattered.
