I love new artists so much. I love going into the tags and seeing new people attempting to draw Ed's hair and beginner artists flailing to get Stede's nose just right and I love seeing these two drawn in new styles, in established artists' personal style that's sometimes a stick figure sometimes a little blob and sometimes super realistic. I love the creativity of this fandom in coming up with brilliant things like the snau. I love seeing their progress, I love seeing them gain confidence over time and share more, I love seeing them become friends with other artists and hyping other up. I love being reminded that "damn Stede's nose is still hard for me to get when I'm trying something more realistic" and "Jesus Ed's eyes are hard to get right aren't they"
I just really really like it when someone tries art for the first time because of our beautiful show.
#meow speaks#ofmd#our flag means death#I also love aotw for these reasons#because those tips that a lot of our beloved artists have shared are just so good#and they essentially tell you to say fuck off to people and just enjoy being a beginner#enjoy learning something new ♥️

tw: black+trans death
from the_yvesdropper on instagram:
our beautiful black trans brother, 35 year old Righteous Torrence "Chevy" Hill, was murdered in Atlanta, GA this weekend.
he went by his nickname 'Chevy' he was originally from Macon, GA. he owned Evollusion, which is a black/ queer owned LGBTQ+ salon in Atlanta that provided and dedicated full service to specializing in hair, nails, barbering and makeup. growing up as young black queer boys/kids, the barbershop experience can sometimes be a tricky space to occupy, this was something that Chevy understood and wanted to cultivate a space of safety where you can also get the affirming look and style you want, and he did exactly that.
Chevy was a beloved son, brother, partner, and father.
one of his last posts that had a photo of himself said :
"if you truly know me, you know i am a humble, modest, private man, that i love my community, i have the love of God in me and will give the shirt off my back to any soul in need, also i never post pictures of myself, legaey give myself credit, that stops today, i am my legacy!"
(a close friend of Chevy asked if i could share more then one photo of Chevy, since he never posted photos of himself and in recent years he got the confidence to want to share more photos and now he won't get the chance to)
Chevy, hey king, hey brother, hey angel, thank you for everything, i lové you, we lové you, i'm so sorry. there are a lot of photographers in heaven who will be able to photograph you as the glorious black trans angel that you are.
there will be a homegoing service/memorial for our brother
there aren't many details about what happened but apparently he was shot by a family member last wednesday, the 28th (at least this article was the one linked in relation to his murder.)
judging by both the IG post and the comments section he was well-loved by many people and those people have many good memories with him and nothing but good things to say. this is a comment that was left by tirajmeansgolden which was hidden by IG for some reason:
I started testosterone in February 2020. I hit this man up at the end of 2019 after numerous Google searches for an LGBT-friendly barber near me (and by near me... he was a good 35-40 minutes from the rural area I was in outside of Atlanta: but when I found out he was a trans man and that his business was the first and only LGBT hair bar, I knew it would be worth the trip). I was a dysphoric mess in his DMs one Sunday. I hated how my hair was growing out. I never had a "masculine" hairstyle before but decided one day I would buzz it all off myself, then allowed it to grow out a bit... I sent him a video and despite him being closed on Sunday, he told me to come through. I got my hair braided and he gave me my first really masculine fade. Explained the different terms. Lined me up. Was asking me about my decision to transition and provided some helpful advice + guidance. I told him how I was a therapist and he was hype and said he talked with a group of trans men and he would love for me to stop by and also give some mental health tips. So whoever said he was humble - wow, what an understatement. Such a community man! Made me feel SO comfortable because barbershops were a source of major trauma and triggers for me. They were such an integral part of my early transition (I just celebrated 4 years later week). And he was such an integral part of the Atlanta Queer community with hosting events like Queer Con. How I found so many other great resources + queer businesses/artists. May you rest in peace, Chevy. You'll be missed. You've made such a different in the lives of countless people. You definitely were living your Purpose + left a legacy behind ...
#op#rest in power#black trans lives matter#death -#black death -#trans death -#didn't add a tw to the top of this post at first. sorry everyone.

Are you into fanfiction? Have you written any, or do you have any favorites that you would recommend?
It may be safe to say that I have an addiction to Good Omens fan fic.
There's of course the fandom favourites (Slow Show, Factory Settings, Shotgun Wedding, Rough Enough For Love, Or Be Nice, One Night In Bangor, etc, etc) which I recommend to everyone as they are beloved by the fandom for a reason.
But, here are 10 that I've come across that others may not know of:
'Thus saith the Lord' by TheManicMagician (Teen And Up).
I read this fic on my way home from Florida sitting in an airport because our flight was delayed. I was so engrossed with it that I missed all the commotion of someone being taken off the previous flight on a stretcher. It does deal with hurt Crowley though and mind controlled Aziraphale. 10/10 would read again.
2. 'Would I Lie to You?' by FeralTuxedo & TawnyOwl95 (Explicit)
The boys are rival team captains for a show 'Don't Lie to Me" - which is based on the real life show 'Would I Lie To You?'. Lots of bicker flirting in this one. I'm a huge fan of FeralTuxedo and TawnyOwl and they do not disappoint with this fic. I devoured this.
3. 'Talk about the weather' by nightbloomingcereus (Mature)
Aziraphale is a meteorologist and Crowley is a YouTube storm chaser. I didn't know I needed this fic in my life until I read it. It's funny and heartwarming and believe me when I say that you'll fall in love with the story and the characters.
4. 'Honey, You'll Survive' by HotCrossPigeon (Teen and Up)
Look, sometimes I just like to see Crowley hurt and being taken care of by Aziraphale. This scratches that itch. The writing is so good and they capture the characters really well.
5. 'The Sandford Flower Show' by Mussimm (Explicit)
I am literally so shocked I do not see this fic pop up as often as it should. The plot in this is GENIUS. IT IS SO GOD DAMN GOOD. Crowley takes Aziraphale to a flower show and they meet Mephistopheles, a fallen seraph. Because our boys are idiots, shenanigans ensue. Seriously. Go read this.
6. 'Trial & Error' by fellshish (Explicit)
Crowley is on trial for temping an Angel (Aziraphale). I just read this one about a month and a half ago and I honestly can't get it out of my mind. The writing is hilarious and keeps you enraptured throughout it all. I also really adore how fellshish writes Crowley and Aziraphale. Their other fic The Loophole, or, How to Convince a Demon God Exists in Three Easy Steps is also amazing :)
7. 'The Shared Desk Dilemma' by MissUnderstoodLyrics (Explicit)
Crowley and Aziraphale are both teachers at Eden University who are forced to share a desk. A prank war ensues. As you can expect, this is a enemies to lovers fic and who doesn't love one of those?
8. 'Big Name Feelings' and 'And They Were Streamers' by ghostrat (Explicit / Mature)
BNF just finished a few days ago and it's such a cute fic. It's a fandom au where Crowley is a fic writer and Aziraphale is an artist. ATWS - as it says on the tin, the boys are streamers and live together. I absolute adore anything written by ghostrat.
9. 'how do we turn on the light?' by moonyinpisces (Explicit)
Honestly, I just know that this will be up there on my list with Factory Settings once it's finished (mainly because it already is). It's SO GOOD. It takes place after S2 and the second coming is happening. I really don't want to even give much away because I want everyone to read this. Everything about it is GENIUS.
10. 'Sit Tight, Take Hold' by nieded (Explicit)
I legit just finished this fic on Sunday but it has moved up to my must read list for anyone who is looking for GO fan fiction. The boys are Formula 1 drivers and the drama in this is *chef kiss*. For context, this fic is 150K words. I finished this fic in 2 days. It really is THAT good. It's also part of a series called #RAINBOWROAD so once you finish this fic, there is more to read!
This is only the tip of the iceberg of my ever growing list of GO fics.
Thanks for the ask :)
#Good Omens#Good Omens Fanfic#Good Omens Fanfic Recomendations#I just like Crowley and Aziraphale being idiots and in love together#And then sometimes in pain and hurt#But of course always a happy ending#I need them to be happy or else

Hi Meg! Hope you're doing well (and happy New Year!) I was wondering if you could give any tips on layers when it comes to digital art? I'm slowly learning digital and slowly getting the hang of it, as I'm more of a traditional artist rather than digital, but it's the layers that gets me and that confuses me the most and I was wondering if I could get some tips or advice from the master?😅 I've been in love with your style for a long time and was I've always wanted to know how you do it
Hey there!
First of all thank you so much! 💕
My coloring and shading style especially have gone through quite some changes since I first started digital art - shading with black and the airbrush tool, which doesn't equal art being bad, but most of the time soft shading (like with the airbrush) in black looks dull and takes the colorful out of your drawings. If it is part of your style or intention, obviously you can share with black too. If done right, like in many superhero comics for example, it looks incredibly impressive. (The shading in those are sharp though most of the time, not soft)
I got carried away, sorry. Just wanted to say that my technique/style changed and so will yours with time!
Second, I am by far no master. I've been drawing digitally for almost 6 years now but I'm still learning a lot.
However, I always try to help people and when directly asked to, how could I refuse.
I'm going to show how I draw simpler pieces like the current Madrigal family portraits with the help of Luisa, our beloved, and will mainly talk about the way I use layers.
Disclaimer: my way is not the only way and if you use layers differently that's fine, there are multiple ways to use layers and the tools connected to them. I'm NOT trying to tell you how to use those but am simply, by request, trying to explain how I use them
✧・゚: *✧・:*✧・゚: *✧・
Program used: Medibang Paint Pro
Media: Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite (this is not sponsored by Samsung lmao I wish)
I start out with a blank canvas and sketch my intended motif
Luisa doing a little spin (indicated by the skirt) ♡
Now I do the lineart. It's not gonna be ideal in this case because that's the style I'm going for in this series but that's secondary.
I add a layer. Most of the time it should be a button with a plus.
The plus let's me add layers, the bin delete layers, the arrow up is to move a layer up and the arrow down is to move a layer down (though I do that more by just directly holding down my S pen on the layer and move it as far up or far down as I want), ignore the lock, the 3 dots are other features like duplication of a layer, gaussian blur etc.
After the lineart comes coloring. I start with skin (eyes etc. included sometimeson separate layers sometimeson the same lol), then hair, then upper clothing, bottom clothing, and lastly accessories - though I also tend to just put them on the same layer as one of the clothing layers.
The thing with layers is that when you fill an area with color, add a layer underneath it and draw over - or rather under - the previously colored area it will be on the layer but it will be covered up by the layer above it.
I'm bad at explaining but basically we artists are inpatient a lot especially in coloring and in traditional art drawing out of the line or accidentally drawing over already colored skin or anything else so with traditional art you have to take care of that.
Layers make your life so much easier. Just draw the area out. If it's underneath another layer f.e. skin, it is covered by that layer.
You can see this here with the red in the bows (layer 164). They obviously are drawn over their actual lines but because they are layered underneath the layer for the blouse and hair, that doesn't fill the area of the bows (because if it would there'd be no red there as it's covered up), the red does not actually draw over the intended line. I hope that makes sense- 😭😭
Another cool feature digital art gives you is ✨clipping✨ that also saves you sanity you'd spend on not drawing over.
I use it for shading a lot.
I add another layer, tick the box saying "Clipping" and everything I draw on that layer will only be on the layer I clipped it to. For example, if I clip a layer to shade skin, I can only draw on the skin. Not the hair, the blouse or anything else. It's literally clipped to the skin layer.
The great thing: You can clip as many layers on top as you want. Clipped layers can't be clipped to another clipped layer. It'll always be the skin layer.
(Used the clipping tool on the lineart, specifically the lips as you maybe noticed. This means you can change the color of the lineart or any desired colored area with the clipping tool)
("Protect Alpha" works similar but I haven't exactly used it a lot lol)
(A not clipped layer is selected in this screenshot thus Clipping is not shown as activated)
And that's basically it.
It's worth mentioning the "Blending" application. Experiment with it. Try out different blendings like "Add" (makes color on the layer lighter/ almost glow) or "Multiply" (makes color on the layer darker) and many others. Go wild.
✧・゚: *✧・:*✧・゚: *✧・
Someody make a counter for the term "layer" and "layered" 🗿😭
Hope this was somewhat helpful I'm seriously terrible at explaining especially in a language that is not native to me so uh if something's unclear please tell me -
Happy drawing!~
#long post#meg trying to teach art again#medibang#art tutorial ig???#there's probably so many grammer mistakes and violation of the English language here im so sorry 😭

Hi. I've always been curious. I didn't read the mdzs novel, just the drama adaptation, so i do not know how the ah-cheng/xichen pairing came to be. I asked someone this before but idk if they answered, and about a year to this fandom, i still don't understand how it started. I love the ship tho. 10/10 on-board of it. But the live action mostly just showed JGY and Xichen's interaction. Or maybe I just missed the hints? I just want to know the history. Thank you in advance if you'll answer.❤️
Anon I will always happily answer any questions about this show! However I must confess that I, like yourself, am a CQL only fan.
That said, honestly if there is one thing I've learnt about fandom in my decade and a half playing about in it it is that people can (and will, and do) try out any and all pairings to see what works, with very limited exceptions (you dont, for example, really see fics breaking up WangXian because, well, canon gave us something pretty much perfect why would we mess with that?). That's one of my favourite things about being in fandom. I do think sometimes all it takes for a ship to become The Fanon Ship™️ for particular side characters is for that one author/artist to write/draw something that grabs the rest of us so hard and wrings such a delighted collective squee! out of us we collectively kind of agree to forget it's not canon?
Now, why XiCheng in particular? Well, from what I know of novel/donghua timelines JC stayed behind at Cloud Recesses after WWX got booted for punching JZX. From what I gather a lot of fics that start the relationship early put it here; one young Sect Leader taking a future Sect Leader under his wing, which turns into something more.
The time skip period generally features a lot of LXC helping JC through the rebuilding post the deaths of JYL and WWX as one of the closest Sect Leaders geographically but also someone JC knows and trusts. The flip side is JC helping LXC deal with LWJ's punishment and isolation.
Post-canon fics tend to play on their parallels and shared grief, the 'I know what it's like to lose a beloved sibling (NMJ/JYL) because of the actions of another beloved sibling (JGY/WWX) and to be responsible for their (JGY/WWX) death. Basically, XiCheng is an interesting dynamic to play with for lots of reasons. Narrative wise both have pretty bad parental examples of love, become sect leaders too young, have their secta burnt down and their beloved brothers go missing. Personality wise there's a bit of opposites attract; JC would do well with someone who was gentle and unrelentingly kind and LXC could do with someone who will get angry on his behalf. Who doesn't love it when the grumpy character is soft for the sunshine character, and the sunshine character only? Heck maybe people just think those are two jawlines that deserve each other?
But I have also seen XiCheng described as a bit of an exercise in "pair the spares" which, uh, I honestly don't get at all because, uh, everyone apart from WangXian is kind of a spare? Discounting XuanLi and the CQL-only almost (but never really) ChengQing there's no canonical romantic relationships to be seen amongst the main protaganists' generation we're not calling JGY/QS a romatic relationship because on this blog we're living in our MianMian and QS ran away together and live as cultivation partners far far away from Jin Lin Tai happy bubble which, again, give the fandom a sandbox ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Personally, I see just as much NieLan and SangCheng as I do XiCheng, and you're right that XiYao has some strong in-text support and is pretty popular (perhaps more so with CQL fans? Lingering public hand touches anybody?). Heck I've even read and thoroughly enjoyed some really good fics with MingXiCheng and ChengYu. I've seen (aged up) XiYu. NingCheng, SangYu, and SangYao aren't super rare, 3zun is everywhere. I've even seen cute ChengYao hcs about them being the most awkward co-parents to ever co-parent one bratty jin heir.
Leaving ALL of that (which is admittedly a lot) aside my own top peronal hc for JC is that he's somewhere on the aro/ace spectrum with a sex-postive leaning because I am invested way too heavily in dad!cheng with two dozen adopted and biological children and only he knows which are which leave me alone.
I just realised I didn't really properly address the point you made about XiYao having more textual support in CQL. Oops, sorry! I guess I would tend to agree. As to why there isn't then more XiYao than XiCheng? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Might be that the XiYao crowd is torn between NieYao, NieLan, 3zun, and XiYao? Might be that people don't want to ship JGY with LXC because they think he doesn't "deserve" to get what he wants? Might just be that the novel/donghua didn't give XiYao that much chemistry and the CQL fandom haven't had time to tip the scales? Short answer, I just don't know.
Did that in any way answer your question anon? I have no idea! Probably not? I apparently have more feelings about the fleets sailing these waters than I thought I did. But hopefully it helped somewhat? If anyone else has anything more concrete please chime in!

'SighSwoon' merges self-care tips with hilarious memes on Instagram
Scrolling through @SighSwoon on Instagram is the equivalent of picking up a mysterious book at a thrift shop and falling into words that both enlighten and entertain.
Gabi Abrao, a 24-year-old Los Angeles native, is the mind behind one of Instagram's shiniest hidden gems. SighSwoon showcases self-reflective memes and guides on how to feel things, whether it's simple pleasures or a broken heart. It’s a treasure trove of content tailored for millennials navigating creative lives.
Sighswoon began in the summer of 2016, Abrao tells Mashable over email. Heartbreak and the desire to make some changes drove her toward the internet as a medium for creating and connecting with others, mainly through memes. With an ever-growing follower count of 62.3K, she's connected with a lot of people.
“When I share a realization online and see that thousands of people are going through the same thing, it makes me feel less alone, less hard on myself. I want people to feel this way too — understood, empowered,” Abrao explains.

Reminder that we’re all multi-faceted human beings and inner movements and conditions are subject to change constantly. There is no fixed condition. The more you do and the more you experience, the more understanding you will gain about your many facets and when they show up for you. There is so much to you - your capabilities, your moods, your modes. Being in one mode doesn’t make you in fixed opposition to the the other. There is no forever, there is no never. Fixation is an illusion. Change and shape-shifting is nature. After you understand your modes, you may get close to managing them. The gift of this will be synchronicity and balance. ** (Reposting myself from last October because this theme keeps showing up for me time and time again. Love this truth too much. Happy shapeshifting.)

The artist uses her platform to offer a plethora of self-care tips, from how to sunbathe ("a secluded location where you can get as naked as possible") to the best ways to "shapeshift," a visualization practice for when you're uncentered. Reading her is kind of like speaking to a caring physician who knows exactly what ails you and then gives you the perfect prescription, free of charge.

Three years ago, following a mildly devastating heartbreak, I dragged my mattress and box spring to the very center of the room and said, “I am a lush, self-sustaining island“. I slept in the center of the room for three days. That weekend, I took myself to a local playhouse. A 20-seat theater, the space was tiny and intimate. I arrived alone in a long black dress and proceeded to watch a stubborn man fall in love with an alien. The play was incredible, surprising, I cried. Once home, I felt ready for the luxury of leaning on a wall and shoved my bed back up against it. . . Later, ready for guests and no longer isolating, I thought of myself as a castle in the desert. “Grand for itself, wise for itself,” I wrote in a poem. In this new form, I was rejecting the need for outside validation, especially that of romantic partners. I imagined myself made of stone that remained cool, even at the highest noon. I imagined myself as an abundant whimsical structure in an environment lacking of. Sturdy and welcoming and independent. “Grand when you arrive, grand when you leave,“ I added to the poem. . . In a meditation class in high school, our teacher told us to pick our place. My teacher, who did past life regression on dogs, said, “Pick a place to be in. Just sit there and listen. Make room for visits from animals, insects, spirits.“ I settled for a giant warm boulder in the sun, next to a free-flowing river, surrounded by woods. A buffalo visited me that day, my eyes closed in a classroom. When things are neutral, when things are good, when things are great, I am the boulder in the sun by the river. Or I am laying on it. . . The house cat reminds me to stretch my body and take time in the sun. The house cat makes me not feel guilty for napping too long or staring at the traffic outside. The house cat reminds me to give myself permission to relax and take it slow.

With so much to do and see online today, it can be difficult to slow your scroll and ask yourself how you're feeling. Abrao's hyper-aware content offers a mirror with which followers can take a nice, long look at themselves. The focus falls on subjects like self-worth, illusions, success, and creativity. She utilizes extensive captions to explain specific ideas in depth — or even just to describe a sunset.

me drinking the sunset on a hill overlooking the city. it’s incredible how some of the most impactful events occur in line with some of the most devastating. sometimes intensity is just intensity. i am living my dreams and aching simultaneously, and i’d be a fool to think this could ever be any other way. dual, shifting, unbelievably fair. i am so happy to still be here. when things feel gigantic, and the imagination builds tall tales to match the sensation, we can always return to water and sunshine.

“As a teenager, I used to do street art wheat paste posters around the city that said ‘sigh swoon sigh’ on them," Abrao says of her page’s unusual name. "It was a mini poem I made up and attached meaning to, and sharing it like that was a reason to run around and be bad. Years later, the phrase would come back around and feel like the most fitting title for what my page has become.”

The Sighswoon feed is aesthetically pleasing, everything kissed with a tint of beige. It's light and welcoming, which is exactly the way Abrao wanted it. She blames her fascination with the hue on her time spent at the beach: “I was renting a bed and a balcony in a living room for $500/month. The building’s stucco was beige, the cheap '90s carpet was beige, and the sand was beige. I think I just wanted to match everything.”

“The cyborg in me recognizes the cyborg in you,” reads her bio, just above a link to her online store where she sells merch that features the saying on totes and sweatshirts. “It’s a claim to embracing the digital age,” Abrao explains, “the very human-meets-technology existence we all participate in, and are still wearily adapting to.” She admits that while it’s meant to be humorous, she also means it with her “whole heart."

With just about three years of memeing under her (beige) belt, Abrao has figured out the formula for making a solid one.
“A good meme is funny, relatable, insightful, and healing. In that order. You should laugh, then feel connected to the creator or others who understand it, then experience some introspect, then leave with a healed feeling from those three processes,” she muses. Her delivery method varies as she utilizes many different meme formats.

Occasionally, Abrao will post pictures of herself wearing interesting outfits made of neutral textiles and glowy silks. These portraits provide a face to the name (as well as maintaining her color-coded image). They also fuel fan encounters at her part-time book store gig: "A few times I have rung up a book, handed it to the person across the counter, and they’re just staring at me, and they say 'You make memes right?'"
View this post on Instagram
Years ago, I read a passage by an unknown source that said - “When you have an amazing day, take note of what you were wearing, what you ate, who you were with, what you did. Do the same with bad days.” This shirt is my absolute favorite of mine, and I’ve only had good days in it.
A post shared by GABI + MEMES (@sighswoon) on Apr 17, 2019 at 5:11pm PDT
Abrao just wants to help everyone chill out. "I aim for my page to be accessible, empowering, and soothing," she says. And she wants to keep it up for as long as possible.
"I wish to continue my studies of the invisible and unseen — documenting my findings through paintings, writings, videos, memes, and other art forms," she says. Her end goal is literally out of this world: "I will operate a carousel in the desert some day, and I hope to re-spawn on another planet in my next life."
In the midst of all the noise that is Instagram in 2019, Sighswoon provides a light-filled digital oasis, a faraway page that's easy to get lost on. Be careful, though. You might just walk away feeling refreshed and renewed. And with an affinity for beige.

Working in the beauty industry has afforded us WWW beauty editors the distinct privilege of proximity to the best and brightest in the worlds of hair , makeup , skin , and nails . This access allows us to bring you, our beloved readers, the hottest of-the-moment beauty news, but another resource we love to tap for this purpose is beauty podcasts. From product reviews and recommendations, to expert advice and trend commentary, these online audio-shows can can be super informative, and also so much fun to listen to. When Meghan Markle 's makeup artist Daniel Martin recently spilled the tea on how he covers pimples during a recent appearance on beauty podcast Gloss Angeles, it re-affirmed to us that these digital talk-shows are a bonafide goldmine of beauty advice, straight from the experts we all love to hear from. Not to mention, they make our soul-crushing commutes just a little less brutal. Ahead, find our five favorite beauty podcasts, along with the best tips we've picked up from each. Don't forget to shop the selection of cult-favorite products hosts have recommended. Los Angeles beauty editors Sara Tan and Kirbie Johnson host this pod, where they discuss all things beauty news, products, and the like. They may be the new kids on the beauty podcast block, but they bring with them years of industry experience, impeccable taste, and, of course, tons of knowledge to share. Our favorite tip: Podcast guest Martin revealed on episode 4 his go-to cocktail for covering and treating pimples at the same time. “I mix Cortisone gel and eyeshadow primer to cover it up before I put concealer on top of it," he said. "The Cortisone gel is like a barrier and protects the pimple. Then I’ll lay eye shadow primer on top of it to smooth it out. Because it’s so dry, it’s kind of like a film.” Listen to Gloss Angeles here . Hosts Jessica Matlin and Jennifer Goldstein are two beauty editors and self-proclaimed beauty junkies who spend their weekly episodes discussing the latest product news and their own beauty adventures, with lots of celebrity and expert guests in the mix. Our favorite tip: On Episode 167, celebrity makeup artist Nam Vo dished on the pre-makeup skincare routine that helps her create her now famous "glow porn" makeup look. "I will tone, I'll massage, like, three layers of oil on, and then I use the Beautyblender Blotterazzi," she explained. "I warm [oil] up like really, really warm and then press, press press into the face, then I use Blotterazzi to take off the excess." Listen to Fat Mascara here . Jackie Michele Johnson is a comedian and beauty lover who shares her love of vegan and cruelty-free beauty every week, alongside a healthy does of laughter. She invites weekly guests, including everyone from actor friends to beauty icons, to chat all things makeup, skincare, and wellness. Our favorite tip: On a recent episode of the pod, New York based beauty writer Rio Viera-Newton dropped a major gem about how she uses her favorite toner: "I decant it into a spray bottle and use it on flights a lot. Always decant." Genius. Listen to Natch Beaut here . Every week, comedy writers Esther Povitsky and Caroline Goldfarban take listeners along on their mission to glow up, via discussion of all things makeup, skincare, health, and more. With special guests popping in to share their personal health and beauty rituals, there's always a fresh and funny take to consider Our favorite tip: When Kiernan Shipka appeared on a recent episode, she shared the secret to her pristine "glass skin". "The second that I switched over to Marie Veronique–did the retinol serum, did the face oils, coupled with the cleanser – that was it," she said. Listening to this podcast is like sipping a warm cup of tea. Instead of offering product reviews, host Brooke Devard invites various thought leaders on to serve us real, intellectual talks about self-care, wellness, and skincare. Instead of recommending the best serums to buy, this pod encourages us to challenge the many facets of societal beauty standards that continue to bind feminine identified beings in this world. Our favorite tip: London-based editorial nail artist Sylvie Macmillan appeared on a recent episode to talk through the artistry of nail design and the properties of strong, healthy nails. "One of the things that makes your nail a lot stronger is the shape of it," she explained. "It's called the c-curve–it's that curve that is on the end of your nail.On your index finger, it's often a lot flatter, and so that's why those ones always break first." Up next, 5 hot beauty trends coming straight out of NYC .

List of Sherlolly Prompts as of 7/26/2017 - We’ve got a new one!
Here is a link to the very informal Sherlolly Prompt Fest FAQ
Below is the list of prompts submitted to @holidaysat221b. Where possible, we have tagged the submitter so that credit can be given if a prompt inspires someone to write a fic or create a piece of art.
Some submissions were specifically labeled as Art prompts, and they have been separated into their own category. However, if you are a fic writer and one of the art prompts calls to you, go for it. Likewise, if one of the other prompts makes you want to draw, have fun with it! Prompts that have been filled at least once will be followed with an *, in case that influences your decision to work with one.
We only ask three things:
1) If you use one of the prompts on this list, please remember to credit the prompt and prompter somewhere in your fic summary/art description or in your notes. It’s the polite thing to do.
2) Please submit an ask or message @holidaysat221b with a link to your work, the prompt you used, the prompter, and how you want to be identified (in cases where your Tumblr and fic/artist name are different). This will allow us to share your work with our followers and tag the prompter (if possible).
3) We have set up a Sherlolly Prompt Fest Collection on Ao3. If you are planning to post your fic or art on Ao3 and would like to add it to the collection, please do. As of this moment, the collection is open and unmoderated. Please remember to credit the prompt and prompter in your fic/art notes.
On to the Prompts as of July 26, 2017
Art
Art prompt: (I’ve wanted this like burning for five years, I’ll never give up asking) Sherlock and Molly, the cake scene from Sixteen Candles". Only in the morgue and Molly’s wearing the lab coat. - @sunken-standard *
Art prompt: Potter!lock. Don’t care if it’s student Sherlock and Molly in their house robes, teachers, wizarding professionals, a recreation of the Order of the Phoenix group photo with Sherlock characters instead. Whatever. Just as long as it’s Potter!lock. - @darnedchild
Art prompt: Molly and Sherlock’s first real date gets interrupted by a case. Are they dressed up for a fancy evening, or wearing something more suited to fish and chips and a walk around the park? - Anonymous
Crossovers/Works set in or inspired by another specific fictional universe (ie Potter!lock)
I’d really like to see a Daemon (from the His Dark Materials books by Philip Pullman) version of Series 3/TAB/Series 4 (any or all of those), especially when it comes to the ILY scene. - Kay
iZombie!Sherlock – Think of this, if Sherlock gets infected we have: 1) Sherlock with white hair 2) Sherlock getting brains from Molly “for experiments” 3) Sherlock getting different attitudes (hippie brain = hippie!Sherlock) 4) Paler than normal pale Sherlock 5) Sherlock with red bloodshot eyes. Also: If Molly Hooper gets infected, it’s like she’s the Liv Moore of Barts. Lestrade as Clive (and relieved to be not only depending on Sherlock to solve crimes). Sherlock deduces Molly’s hair color and tan (because Molly can’t show up to work with white hair, even whiter skin color, and very slow pulse rate). Major asshole Boss being the one shipping tainted Utopium to Britain. - The Silent Fangirl
Superwholock!Sherlolly - The Silent Fangirl
Doctor Who!Sherlock - Molly Hooper as a companion - The Silent Fangirl
Me Before You!Sherlock - The Silent Fangirl
Molly Hooper as “Mary Reilly”. - @darnedchild
Dracula!lock, but maybe mix it up just a little. Sherlock as the object of Dracula’s affections (Mina) and/or Molly as the vampire expert (Van Helsing)? - @darnedchild
Sherlock and Lady Molly of Scotland Yard. Molly Hooper as Lady Molly from “Lady Molly of Scotland Yard” with her crime solving partner Mary (Morstan). (Note from Mod - “Lady Molly of Scotland Yard” used to be available via BBC Radio 4 Extra on demand, you may still be able to find it online somewhere.) - @lullikiish
A Hades and Persephone AU with Molly as female Hades (the unrequited love at first, the proximity with death) and Sherlock as a male Persephone (the curiosity, the lack of eating). Irene would be a great Poseidon (the chaos provided by the ocean, the sailor knots). As for John, he would be a great Hermes! - Kay
Gimme “The Full Monty”, baby. Surely someone can find a reason to have Sherlock, John, and Greg get their kits off? Or Molly, Mary, and Sally? Mrs H could give professional pointers and tips to whomever you’re planning to get starkers. - Anonymous
A Sherlolly version of “It’s A Wonderful Life”. Sherlock gets to see what his loved ones’ lives would be like if he never existed, realizing the positive impact he had on them when he was alive. - @simplyshelbs16xoxo
Something similar to “The Ransom of Red Chief”, only in this version the kidnappers have figured out that Molly Hooper is a pressure point for Sherlock Holmes. They take her captive, intending to blackmail Sherlock or hold Molly for ransom; but Molly Hooper is having none of that nonsense. While Sherlock works to save her, Molly finds ways to torment, injure, and outwit her captors. Whether she escapes on her own, finds a way to let Sherlock and John know where she’s at, or ends up driving her kidnappers crazy to the point that they give up and send her back is up to the author. Could go humorous or dark very easily. - Anonymous
Clique/Sherlock Crossover - After the events of TFP, Molly Hooper (who is actually Jude McDermid) decides to go back to Edinburgh, broken-hearted & bound to continue the “family business” after years of running away from it. Gone is her long hair & colorful jumpers: she completely changed her look & have every information about Molly Hooper destroyed. Years passed, she forms the Solasta Women’s Initiative, much to her brother’s delight, until a horrific event brings Sherlock Holmes back into her world again. It’s more of a Sherlolly/Judelock mash-up where Sherlock wants to know why she left, who she really is, & how he’s still madly in love with her. Molly/Jude is more like she’s finally embracing the life she thought she never wanted, until she realizes that she can never forget the love she has for Sherlock. Can she be Jude & love him as well? Can Sherlock accept her true reality, or does he only love her as Molly & not Jude. Throw in a nice mystery/thriller plot too! Oh yeah Mycroft, who knew Molly is Jude from the beginning but decided to let Sherlock figure it out on his own, is determined to stop this union at all cost. Pls include all the girls & guys in Clique, especially Holly since she’s a badass off to take down Jude and her “girls” no matter what! It’s a crazy plot but if you’ve seen the 1st 2 episodes of Clique, it screams for a Sherlolly crossover fic! Thanks for reading this uber-long fic prompt! - @violetjersey
A reversed Potter!lolly with Sherlock being the Muggle-born, while Molly’s the pureblood witch (the likes of Luna Lovegood). Sherlolly, of course. - @mychakk
Agatha Christie’s “And Then There Were None” – because I always think of the movies when I see Mizjoely’s U.N. Owen tag. - @darnedchild
Song fic/Inspired by lyrics
Song Fic: Adele’s “Water Under the Bridge” - @darnedchild *
Song Fic: … I would love something based on “Samson” by Regina Spektor please. - @chelle812
Song Fic: Katy Perry’s “Unconditionally” - @darnedchild
Song Fic: Texas’ “I’ll See It Through” - @darnedchild
Song Fic: … I’ve got a quote from a song. “You only know you love her when you let her go.” (Note from Mod - The song appears to be Passenger’s “Let Her Go”) - @flowerstar5 *
OT3/Sherlock, Molly, and ?
A case involving wine and stolen spatulas leads to Mycroft Holmes being attracted to Molly Hooper. Too bad Molly’s had enough of the Holmeses, and Sherlock mooning over her really isn’t helping. (Molly Hooper/Mycroft Holmes/Sherlock Holmes) - The Silent Fangirl
Molly wants to meet The Woman. Irene and Sherlock are still friends, and Molly is curious. Much to everyone’s surprise, Molly and Irene hit it off fairly quickly. (Sherlock Holmes/Molly Hooper/Irene Adler) - Anonymous
When Sherlock is injured and stuck in a cast up to his thigh, Mary and Molly find out JUST how grumpy he can get. They end up putting him by a window with binoculars, his pain medication, snacks, juice and his mobile. What happens next? (Molly Hooper/Sherlock Holmes/Mary (Morstan)Watson) - @penaltywaltz
Everything Else
Sherlock is undercover. He’s renting a small place and he’s trying to fit in with the extremely old fashioned community that is probably hiding a deadly smuggling ring or something equally bad. He ends up calling on Molly to come help. Since he’s already established as an unmarried man, his ‘sister’ (or other family member) arrives for a visit. Cue living in the same house while hot for each other type shenanigans while pretending to be siblings under the watchful eye of some suspicious townspeople. - Anonymous
Molly’s school reunion – Sherlock assumes he’ll be needed to help Molly show everyone up. The catch: Molly’s been a beloved peer, so it’s him who gets the obligatory “you hurt her, we’ll end you". :) - @mychakk
Sherlock sees a woman on the street. Instantly intrigued (you can choose as to why) he follows her. - @mel-loves-all
Molly loves wearing Sherlock’s house robes. - @mel-loves-all
Molly has a piece of body piercing jewelry or a tattoo located somewhere that surprises and titillates Sherlock. - @mel-loves-all *
Whenever Molly is close, Sherlock unconsciously always seems to need to touch her in some way after they start dating. He doesn’t notice it, but Molly does. - @mel-loves-all
A midnight dance. - @mel-loves-all
John tries to set up Sherlock with a girl. Unsurprisingly, there are a lot of contenders. And what does Molly have to say about that? - The Silent Fangirl
Through unexpected circumstances, Sherlock and Molly get engaged. It doesn’t end well. Crack!fic - The Silent Fangirl
Eurus Holmes ships the Sherlolly. So does John and Mycroft. Soon, everyone gets dragged into the Sherlolly craze. Crack!fic - The Silent Fangirl
Molly lives in the flat across from 221B. You know, the one that exploded? Yeah. But before that, there was a) looking at the hot naked guy in the window b) said hot naked guy crashing into her flat because he just wants to c) her traitorous cat crossing the street to hot naked guy’s flat. - The Silent Fangirl
Sherlock: A TV series featuring a hot guy with awesome deductive skills, his best friend the doctor, the exasperated detective inspector, the sweet landlady, and the pathologist. And no, the pathologist isn’t in love with the hot guy. - The Silent Fangirl
Molly stops being Sherlock’s pathologist, and starts being THE Pathologist. BAMF!Molly - The Silent Fangirl
This, Sherlock thinks through the haze of cocaine, truly is the worst form of torture. Mycroft and Molly’s wedding through Sherlock’s drug-addled POV. - The Silent Fangirl
Molly commits suicide, but only Sherlock thinks she didn’t. He may not be wrong. - The Silent Fangirl
When John Watson dies, Rosie is given into the care of her godparents. Problem is, they aren’t exactly on speaking terms. Bonus for Harry Watson appearance! - The Silent Fangirl
Molly nearly gets hit by a speeding car … until Sherlock pushes her out of the way and gets hit himself. H/C - The Silent Fangirl
Molly in labor. After watching Mary in labor in TST, I kinda wanna see a funny take on Molly giving birth to her and Sherlock’s child. Maybe something like Molly being in pain, she wishes out loud she’d never had sex with Sherlock, while Sherlock logically points out how well they emotionally and biologically fit together. - Anonymous
Fluff. Molly has been hospitalized for whatever reason. She decides that she is feeling better and just wants to go home. However, the hospital does not want to release her yet. So Molly decides to leave AMA (against medical advice). She feels she can recover at home just as well and also she is eager to get back to work. Besides, who is going to know? This is something someone might expect from Sherlock, but not Molly. How long before he finds out? What is his reaction? - @shadowyqueenbeard
Angst. Molly discovers she is pregnant and is not happy about it. Although she would love to have a baby at some point, right now is not the time. She and Sherlock do not have a commitment and her career is going well. She plans to terminate the pregnancy. Sherlock finds out and tries to stop her. He please with her to change her mind, marry him and be a family. Is this just a control tactic or does he really love her? - @shadowyqueenbeard *
Molly discovers there is Sherlock Holmes RPF (Real Person Fiction) on the internet. She’s shocked to find that someone called Sherlolly4vr74 has been writing fic about her and Sherlock, and they seem to have a dedicated fan base. Some of the stories are very sweet and romantic, some of them are hot enough to give her NSFW ideas. Who is Sherlolly4vr74 (Is it Anderson? Mrs Hudson? Mary? John? I bet it’s John.) and is Sherlock aware of the stories? - @darnedchild
Eurus has been known to put on a persona and disguise to get close to people for information – she was Faith for Sherlock, E and the psychiatrist for John. What if she had also spent some time around Molly prior to the events at Sherrinford? What information would she have gleaned about her brother and his pathologist? - @darnedchild
Can they be R rated. Because I feel Sherlock would not muck about, with telling Molly what he would like to do to her, he would not use cute little names for all her female parts and would go into great detail, like all his cases. She would be his very serious case. Yes he would most defiantly do a lot of research on pleasing her. Write it however you are most comfortable with. - @oliverfel4
Sherlock and Molly are getting married! It’s time to work on the guest list for the wedding, and suddenly they are faced with the question—Do they let Euros come, or not? - @celticmoonbeam
Shipwrecked Sherlolly—Sherlock saves Molly from drowning. - Anonymous
Euros leads Sherlock to believe that he failed, and Molly was killed after the ILY scene. Much angst ensues as he blames himself for her loss … but then we get to see the happy reunion scene when he learns she’s alive. - Anonymous
Moriarty trying to up Sherlock by sleeping with Molly, but the joke is on him, as Sherlock and Molly knew each other from secondary school/uni and were each other’s firsts. They can be regular (exclusive) lovers too. - @mychakk
Mary as matchmaker. At John and Mary’s wedding, Mary feels a little sad when they leave him alone to go dance (“What about you?”). She decides to make it her mission to help Sherlock find a girl so he’s not alone anymore. And this former agent has no trouble figuring out the potential between Sherlock and a certain Molly Hooper … (Up to you whether or not you want to throw in a Janine segue before she decides to set him up with Molly. And feel free to cover Sherlock being shot!) - @celticmoonbeam
Molly discovers she’s pregnant with Sherlock’s child at the worst possible time: while she’s with his parents, being hidden away, and the two are pretending to be just friends. Bonus if they figure it out before they’re told! - @penaltywaltz
After the events of TFP, Molly and Sherlock get closer. Suddenly, though, he pulls away and starts flirting with a coworker of hers, sometimes blatantly in front of her. It isn’t until an event at Barts that the truth comes out that it was all for a case. - @penaltywaltz
Molly finds out that as a child Sherlock liked the book “The Westing Game” and for one of his birthdays she arranges a vacation mimicking the plot of the book, even if none of them really fit the particular characters. - @penaltywaltz
Sherlock wants to make a gourmet meal for Molly for a special occasion, but he doesn’t seem to get it quite right. Fortunately, a friend/relative is willing to help. - @penaltywaltz
Sherlock moves in with Molly and begins perusing her book collection, picking up random books that have interesting looking covers, and the next thing Molly knows he’s turned into a fantasy buff. - @penaltywaltz *
Non-established Sherlolly. Sherlock gets a hold of Molly’s phone one afternoon and can’t resist snooping. He’s surprised to see a folder in her photo gallery marked “Special” and it’s all photos of him. - @penaltywaltz
Have you had sex? – After Euros asked that I somehow thought “Molly??” (as Sherlock says, Irene only texts him, he doesn’t reply). Later it seems that Euros is the only one who ever has noticed that Molly causes some emotions in him. So my theory is that something happened between Molly and Sherlock, it happened pretty recently, somehow (stressful night and they talked or they had some drinks and somehow one thing led to another) they ended up having sex; but Sherlock wasn’t good at dealing with it after or something urgent came along and he didn’t really consider Molly’s emotions, he ran off right after or in the morning, and that could be the reason why Molly didn’t pick up the phone first and was in a bad mood during the “ILY scene”. What happened between them recently is the reason why Molly is a bit rude to Sherlock when he calls, and the reason why she gets so emotional and raw so easily over the I Love You thing, and why she so easily tells him to say it first. Well, then when Sherlock says “I love you” he finally realizes fully that he really does love her too, and that he is capable of loving that way, and finally sees how easy it could be and what he could lose. Then after this whole thing he goes to talk to Molly and explain things to her. - @lullikiish
Complete me as a person. — Scene that popped into my mind. Irene has been texting Sherlock again, Sherlock in the end almost agrees to meet her for dinner, but as he’s walking out of his flat while Molly is there looking after Rosie he sees Molly in kind of slo-mo in the golden evening sun holding Rosie and being all sweet. Maybe already something a bit has happened before between them, some flirting, etc. The talk with John about a relationship completing him as a person is on the back of his mind. He walks out, but midway down the stairs while taking his phone out (symbolically in darkness compared to that evening sun) he realizes that he misses that warmth and Molly, and realizes that is what completes him. He takes out his phone and texts he’s not coming and then goes back upstairs. Sees Molly all adorable and confused/surprised in this beautiful light and maybe goes to kiss her, etc. - @lullikiish
A post TRF fic, where Sherlock takes Molly with him, but they return to London a couple years later than in canon because Molly got pregnant along the way (or even twice), so now they are three/four of them instead of two? - @mychakk
Victorian “Hooper”lock—Molly in disguise as “Hooper” the man, and they work together on a case and sparks fly. They flirt and all, and Sherlock can’t figure out right away that she’s a woman, and I think it might not even bother him that much. - @lullikiish
“We had chips. She liked me.” – Sherlock in TLD. What could have been had he and Molly gotten chips in TEH: A kick to Tom’s butt. Happy greeting (a hug at least!) at the end of TEH. Quite a lot of sex with Sherlock instead of Tom. Molly the best man’s date. A (sophisticated. Or not) Molly/Janine cat fight for Janine hitting on SH moments. Dancing, so much Sherlolly dancing (and no leaving early). Probably no Shezza (Shezzer?)—which, hmm, is a shame (But maybe they’ve their own not-being-on-a-sex-holiday-but-sexing-a-lot time). A real proposal to Molly. Molly at family Christmas, maybe even a Christmas wedding. Solving CAM without the threat of exile sharpens Sherlock’s deductive abilities. No Norbury as Molly’s already expecting their first offspring, so Sherlock doesn’t taunt needlessly. Mary as the Sherlolly baby godmother as she’s alive! Culverton Smith is taken down by the duo of Mary and Molly while the latter gives birth there (because the ladies are awesome, plus Mrs H tackles him down). John is so impressed he doesn’t look at any other women. Molly’s big heart brings Eurus from her metaphoric plane the moment she steps into 221B, plus baby Holmes wins her heart too. The Holmes family reconciliation and Eurus is in therapy instead of being a multi-killer. Baker Street Boys Team continues while Baker Street Girls Team gives them a run for their money. Mycroft asks Lady Smallwood out himself to her astonishment and internal squealing. Mummy Holmes gets more grandkids than she could’ve imagined. And basically, everyone walks happily into the sunset. The End. Please note, some things can obviously be modified. - @mychakk *
AU: Molly runs away from home when her parents try to arrange a marriage for her. She wants to pursue a life that involves science and marry for love if she ever gets married at all. She meets Sherlock, who is being pressured by his family to marry a nice girl they found for him who loves science as much as he does. It will be interesting when they figure it out. - @shadowyqueenbeard
AU. Instead of dying, Mary actually does hide from Sherlock and John effectively and they don’t find her. Still wracked by guilt and worried he’ll never see her again, John still imagines her in his mind and Sherlock still goes after Culverton Smith … possibly both to save John and because maybe Smith knows something about where Mary went? To solve the mystery and bring Mary home, Sherlock and Molly team up. - @rooneykmara
Crack!fic. Molly and Sherlock had a fake wedding for a case. However, when Molly applies for a marriage license to Tom, it turns out the wedding was actually real. She has to approach Sherlock for an annulment. It seems Sherlock deleted the event, because he doesn’t seem to remember it. Or does he? It seems he is too busy to sign the paperwork, he has misplaced it, always an excuse not to dissolve the marriage. Eventually he has to admit he really does want to be married to her. So Molly has to decide between two men. Which one does she choose? 😉 - @shadowyqueenbeard
Molly, unbeknownst to Sherlock, suffers from psoriasis since her teen years. This is why she’s been adamant about being more physically intimate with him, no matter how much she wants to. Fortunately for her, Sherlock doesn’t care about it at all. Could be a hard T or M rating. Loosely inspired by Loo’s own bout with the disease. - @violetjersey *
Fluff and maybe smut, or angst with a happy ending: Molly has a creepy feeling that she is being followed, and goes to Lestrade for help. He discovers that she has a security detail, curtesy of Sherlock. Molly is not pleased with this situation. Sherlock doesn’t understand why not, shouldn’t she be glad that he cares about her safety? After getting an earful from Molly, he cancels the security detail. Molly promptly leaves town without a word to anyone, leaving Sherlock to sweat. Is she okay? Most likely she is on a beach sipping Margaritas, but maybe she’s in trouble. He would like to make amends but first he as to find her. Should he try to locate her or leave her alone as requested? - @shadowyqueenbeard
NEW - I have read this in one or two fics, but not really developed as a main theme of the story … so: What if Rosie wants to pair John and Molly? How Sherlock will react and … how will he convince Rosie that Molly is for him and not for John. I’m imagining some angst in the middle because the silly man thinks this is a wonderful idea: Rosie gets a mummy and Molly gets a family. In fact, Sherlock sets up a date between Molly and John while he’s babysitting Rosie. - @kalkopyryt

Weelicious
When I was a little girl my mother started taking me to Europe every summer. I don’t have endless detailed memories from my childhood, so these trips traveling through France, England, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and beyond were some of my most treasured. I remember the way my first scone tasted and the thick clotted cream I slathered on top served with a warm cup of tea that felt incredibly grown up at the time. Marching through countless museums, standing under the Eiffel Tower with wonder and amazement or the simple feeling of hearing a foreign language spoken and how I desperately wanted to learn it. My parents didn’t have gobs of money for these trips, so we would stay in bed and breakfasts or hostiles a few nights in a row and then splurge on a “fancy” hotel that I appreciated even more because it felt special.
I was lucky enough to live in Paris for several years on and off in my late teens, but those memories were much more about discovering the city on my own. I’ve been looking forward to creating new memories with my kids, while taking part in one of my favorite pastimes: travel!
Last summer I took Chloe to Paris for 10 days and we had such a life changing experience we decided to go again this summer, but this time we took 3 days to zip off to another beloved city: London.
I posted my travels on Instagram and so many people were headed there this summer as well, so they asked me to share where I had visited and eaten. Below is a list of some personal favorites, but I will say you can’t go wrong as both cities are an absolute treat.
TIPS:
* Bring a scooter for kids. I did a post on it here, but It’s a total game changer for cutting down on complaints and “I’m tired” when discovering a new city. You can pack one in your luggage, in the over head compartments on planes, or at gate check.
* Buy all your tickets ahead of time. You will save tons of time avoiding long lines and occasionally get tickets at a lower price. Great news if you’re bringing kids as many museums offer free passes for little ones.
* Take your time and slow down. There’s no need to rush. I find with kids doing one to two major attractions a day can be enough as it can be overwhelming for kids and you want them to enjoy the experience.
* We’re big picnic-ers! Paris is an especially picnic friendly city where you can grab a baguette, slices of cheese and fresh fruit to eat under the eiffel tower, along the Seine or in one of the gorgeous parks.
* In Paris it’s a right of passage to grab a crepe at a street stand and a baguette or croissant at your local patisserie. Chloe and I never met one we didn’t love!
* Metro. It’s safe and the best way to get around the city. Buy books of ten or twenty tickets at a time.
* Batobus – The boat is a wonderful way to get around and see all of the sights. There are many Batobus stops along the Seine and you can buy tickets at the stop. You can get on and off the boat as many times as you’d like with any of the passes but it’s probably best to buy a two day pass so you don’t have to rush.
* Paris Walks – Great tours of Paris that are only 2 hours. You’ll learn about specific areas – history, food, art, etc… Reasonably priced, well worth the time and great for a child’s attention span.
PARIS:

Musee D’Orsay: my favorite museum in Paris especially for impressionistic art in an old train station.
The Louvre – Buy tickets ahead of time and avoid the lines by entering at the “secret entrance” which is an entrance on the map called “Port de Lions”. Make sure to set aside hours for this treasure as there’s a lot to see.
Eiffel Tower: shh... this tour is a secret to most, but truly special getting to go in the underground bunkers on the Eiffel Tower grounds and then getting a private tour around and up the tower. A great way to beat the lines too!
Atelier Des Lumières: light museum focused on 3 artists and super kid friendly.
Versailles: it’s a quick train ride from Paris and worth every moment. The palace is gorgeous (visit in the afternoon) and head to the gardens before to avoid long lines, rent a boat, walk through the manicured mazes and grab a soft serve ice cream cone.
Below is a list of restaurants I’ve been once or more and felt were great for kids and adults alike. I’ve lived and stay in the 7th arrondissement most of the time, so many of these spots are in the 1st, 6th or 7th. Excited to hear about your favorite parts of the city, too! LONDON:
Go see a show! If you’re traveling all the way to London, seeing a play is the way to go. Chloe and I went to Matilda and I have to say it was one of the best performances I’ve ever seen (and I’ve been known to take the occasional nap in plays. That’s our secret. Ok?)
London Eye The most incredible view of London and a treat for kids
Westminster Abbey buy tickets ahead to avoid the 45 minute line that I got caught in. It’s next to the London Eye, so easy to do both in a morning or afternoon.
Buckingham Palace If the flags are up and out the queen is home.
Victoria and Albert Museum The collection of jewels is reason enough to go.
Tate Modern Modern art for days, large rooms to explore and artists that will blow your mind.
Claridges I mark this not as a restaurant or hotel, but as a true experience for afternoon tea. This is a once in a lifetime experience that I will never forget doing with my mom. You can dress up, lay back and let the endless amounts of sandwiches, scones, tea, champagne and desserts take over.
Borough Market from food to events to all around great shopping.
Harvey Nichols and Harrods Get ready to shop. They’re only minutes apart and if you thought Paris was the place to shop just wait for the incredible fashion finds in London.
The Wolseley I’ve been here 5 times and it gets better each time. The service is out of this world and super kid friendly menu.
Where to stay: Just my 2 cents, but unless you're using points for a lovely hotel stay, I'm a big fan of Kid and Co! You can rent family friendly apartments all over the world and live like locals.
If you can’t make it to Europe this summer you can always pretend by creating your own Parisian fest at home with crepes, roast chicken and french onion soup.
If you have any questions or favorite spots in either city, please leave them below. I know I’ll be headed back again in 2019!

This 1-Day Eastern Tokyo, Japan Itinerary covers highlights including Sensoji Temple, fish markets, museums, and the SkyTree. This touring plan is an efficient step-by-step route for visiting the best of what the city has to offer. It’s a jam-packed day that covering the best of Eastern Tokyo’s highlights, all in a time-saving manner.
Tokyo is commonly divided into the low city and high city. The former is on the delta of the Sumida River and it’s what remains of the historic Tokyo, or old Edo. The latter is the modern metropolis, and where most visitors spend the vast majority of their time.
Only experiencing the west side’s high city is a huge mistake. Districts like Kanda, Nihonbashi, Kyobashi, Ueno, Asakusa, Honjo, Tsukiji, Fukugawa, and Akihabara are vibrant in their own right, and provide a different flavor of culture than do the ‘headliner’ areas to the west.
In Eastern Tokyo, you’ll find temples and shrines from the Edo period and remnants of the Meiji era. While much of these areas have been redeveloped following the Great Kantō Earthquake and subsequent firebombing air raids, this side of Tokyo retains a historic charm, and is imbued with a sense of character cultivated over the course of 600 years.
The history and character of Eastern Tokyo is a stark contrast to Western Tokyo, which feels like the city of the future. These two halves of Tokyo form a more interesting, deeper whole, and we’d encourage you to spend roughly equal time in each half of the city if you have the time. With that said, here’s our 1-day Eastern Tokyo touring plan…
Tsukiji or Toyosu Market – Tokyo now has now two iconic fish markets: Tsukiji is the old option where a bunch of stalls are still located and Toyosu is the new market where there’s a marketplace of vendors, wholesale operation, and tuna auction. Toyosu Fish Market is housed in three interconnected buildings and there’s a lot to see, do, and eat there. If you’re up early, go to Toyosu Market.
If you’re not an early riser but still want to get a flavor of the market, we’d recommend Tsukiji Market, which is the original and still-beloved Tokyo fish market. There’s a lot of great food to eat and some activity to see. Plus, it’s way easier to go from Tsukiji Market to our next destination.
Hamarikyu Gardens – A short walk from Tsukiji Fish Market is Hamarikyu Gardens. Here you’ll find what’s essentially a nicely-landscaped stroll garden with exemplars of traditional Japanese architecture around a large pond with a teahouse in the center. Here, you can enjoy matcha and Japanese sweets.
From here, it’s about a 15 minute walk to Shiodome Station where you’ll catch the Oedo Line to Ryogoku Station.
Museum Madness – From Ryoguko Station, you’ll be a stone’s throw from two great museums. First, the Edo-Tokyo Museum, which we praise as one of the best museums in all of Japan, and an absolute Tokyo must-do. This is a great survey of Tokyo and Japanese history, with varied and engaging displays that could entertain you for hours.
Second, there’s the Sumida Hokusai Museum, which offers intimate exhibitions featuring the work of internationally-famous Japanese ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai. This museum is a nice companion to the Edo-Tokyo Museum; it’ll take you an hour or less, but is still worth doing, especially if you use the Grutto Pass program for free/discounted museum admission. From there, it’s back to the station and on the Oedo Line to Ueno-Okachimachi Station.
Ueno Park – You’ll start at the south end of Tokyo’s museum district, and have the chance to wander through, seeing some of the beautiful gardens, temples, shrines, and museums. What, if anything, you do in Ueno Park is your call. You could spend the entire day here museum-hopping (on hot days, we have!) and still not see it all. With limited time in the city, we wouldn’t recommend that.
Our favorite museums here are the Tokyo National Museum and National Museum of Nature and Science, home to the above–and other–dinosaurs. The National Museum for Western Art and Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum also rank highly. We do not recommend the Ueno Zoo, which we think is a colossal disappointment.
Kitchen Stadium..err…Street – After exploring Ueno Park, walk over to Kappabashi Street. This is a shopping street between Ueno and Asakusa is aimed at restauranteurs, but is also fun for tourists. Kappabashi Street is a cool place to visit not because you’ll purchase anything but because it’s really fascinating to see.
If you’ve ever wondered where all of those plastic food displays that every restaurant in Japan seems to have come from, this is your answer. It’s a lot cooler than it might sound, and even if we’re wrong, it’s on the way to Asakusa.
Old Tokyo – Next, head east to Asakusa, where you can experience the Tokyo of a bygone era. It’s not historic in the same way as Kyoto, but Asakusa does feel like a time capsule that time has passed by. Be sure to peruse the side streets that offer shopping arcades, particularly Nakamise Dori, which has souvenir shops and food vendors that have been serving visitors for centuries.
Nakamise Dori and its vendors line the approach to Sensoji Temple, which one of the top tourist attractions in Tokyo. Sensoji Temple doesn’t do a ton for us, but if you aren’t visiting Kyoto, it’s a must-visit. Even if you are continuing on to Kyoto, it’s worth seeing how it stands in contrast to the towering, ultra-modern skyscrapers in Tokyo.
Tokyo SkyTree – Our “Review: Is SkyTree Worth Doing?” post is not the most ringing endorsement for the observatory, but it does offer a nice bird’s eye view of Tokyo. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Mount Fuji. On a less clear day, you might struggle to see Tokyo Disney Resort.
Time your visit so you arrive at the Tokyo SkyTree shortly before sunset. Stay at the top for 45 minutes or so, watching the city transition from day to night. Afterwards, dine at one of the many restaurants in the shopping complex below the Tokyo SkyTree. Alternatively, head to Akihabara, which is less than 20 minutes away via the subway.
Evening in Akihabara – Wandering around and marveling at the neon signs and vibrance of Akihabara is a great way to end your night in Tokyo. This area is famed as the city’s electronics district, and there are many stores, arcades, maid cafes, cat cafes, etc. that you can check out in Akihabara.
It’s not a hip or luxe district, so those of you who want normal shopping will feel more at home here, too. Stores we recommend visiting (even if you’re just window shopping) include Yodobashi, Laox Main Store, Sofmap, Don Quijote, Super Potato, Mandarake, and Radio Kaikan. The last one is an Akihabara landmark, with many smaller shops selling everything from electronics to anime, manga, models, and more.
This agenda is pretty jam-packed, and it’s very different than the day you’ll likely have exploring western Tokyo. The two sides of the city are very different from one another, with one or the other likely resonating much more with you. This is perfectly normal, and the good news if you have 3 or more days in Tokyo is that you can call an audible and easily spend more time on the side of Tokyo that appeals to you, and less time on the side that doesn’t.
For all of your planning needs–from places to stay to things to do and much more–please consult our Ultimate Tokyo, Japan City Guide. If you’re planning a visit to other cities, please check out my other posts about Japan.
Your Thoughts
Have you visited Eastern Tokyo? Did you visit any of these districts or do these things? Do you prefer “Old Tokyo” or the modern megapolis? What would make your itinerary for these areas of the city? Any additional tips or thoughts from your visit to add? If you haven’t been to Tokyo, what interests you most about the city? Any questions? Hearing your feedback about your experiences is both interesting to us and helpful to other readers, so please share your thoughts or questions below in the comments!

PARIS:
To see:
Musee D’Orsay: my favorite museum in Paris especially for impressionistic art in an old train station.
The Louvre – Buy tickets ahead of time and avoid the lines by entering at the “secret entrance” which is an entrance on the map called “Port de Lions”. Make sure to set aside hours for this treasure as there’s a lot to see.

How to Tell If a Wedding Planner (or Pro) is Real
With so many instagram accounts and social media profiles “sharing” other people’s work, how can you tell if what you are looking at is truly the work of the wedding pro you are considering?
If you have read the book “Steal Like An Artist” by Austin Kleon, you know that there is very little in the world that is completely, wholly original. As artists and creatives, we are inspired by the world around us. To be inspired by the world is to take that which you see and make it better. I take colors, textures, and patterns and I mix them in a new way. I make note of the weddings, events, and interior designs that I love so that I can dissect and dismantle them. I break the world into tiny pieces, and then put it back together in a way that - hopefully - makes people feel things other than that which they felt before. This is not theft. It is inspiration and, in so many ways, art. I honor the work that has come before me by pushing it further.
Theft in the wedding and event space is about showing work that is not your own and failing to properly credit the appropriate individuals. It is taking an idea or an image and knocking it off in a way that degrades the value of the original work. When I talk to my clients about design, I find myself saying, “You wouldn’t carry a knock off Chanel or YSL bag. Why would you pay for a knock off wedding?” My advice for clients and creatives alike is always this: Be better. Be better than Pinterest. Be better than Instagram. You deserve more than a knock off; especially a bad one.
How do you as a couple know whether or not the work a wedding pro is showing is actually theirs?
Over the last month, many of us have been made aware of the fact that our work has been “stolen” and is being shared by other wedding pros as their own. As a professional and a business owner, it is incredibly frustrating to see work be abused in such a cavalier manner. Many of us have dedicated our lives to the pursuit of this work. We have spent decades honing our craft and invested thousands of dollars and countless hours in order to develop ourselves as creatives. Our ability to see the world in an utterly unique way, to imagine a world more beautiful than the one we live in, and to manifest that into reality is an artform. Having it pilfered and passed around as if it is nothing is not only wrong, but incredibly hurtful. It is hard to understand how one professional can do this to another.
As maddening as it is for us as creatives, the real damage to is to our clients. Newly engaged couples begin their search for inspiration online. Social media sites such as Instagram and search engines such as Pinterest are the go-to sources of inspiration for brides and grooms. Couples find an image they love, trace the clicks back to a website, and book a particular vendor based on what they have seen online. The relationship starts with a lie, and nothing good can come from that place. As the process moves forward, couples find themselves struggling with their vendor (be it a planner, designer, photographer, etc.) because the hired team cannot meet their expectations. There is a gap between the perceived talent of the vendor and their actual ability. The faulty pro has sold their clients a lie, and the unknowing couple is left confused about where they have gone wrong. This leads to heartbroken clients and a negative impression of our beloved wedding industry.
So how can you, as a couple and potential client, determine if the work you are seeing online is truly the work of the professional you are considering? Here are three ways that you can suss out the legitimacy of a wedding professionals’ presented work:
5 Tips for Validating a Wedding Pro’s Authenticity
COMPARE: Compare the image you love to the rest of the wedding pros portfolio. Does the image you love fit in with the rest of their presented work? Wedding planners will plan to the desires of their clients, but there should be a sense of style and a vibe that carries through their work. For example, I love production. My weddings will all feature a major design element and there will be a sense of transformation and storytelling. My images are captioned with ways that explain how and why I created a certain environment. Every element I add to a design is personally vetted, and there is a reason behind each decision I make. As , have a very specific style and vibe. Their composure, the lighting, and the way in which they frame their subjects will have a thread of consistency. If you look at a photographer’s site and there are inconsistencies in the filter and tone of the images, it is a good indicator that the work you are seeing may not be theirs.
FOLLOW THE FEED: Scroll through the feed of the company you are considering in search of other images from the same wedding or event. Legitimate pros will have multiple photos of the same wedding, and those photos will also appear on their website. Beware of new accounts that are featuring over the top work that appears to be their own. New businesses need time to develop their own original portfolios. If you see something that you adore but the pro seems too new to have perhaps produced it, reach out and ask about the origin. Some new businesses have approval to share work they contributed to while they were employed with another company. In that case, the pro will likely direct you to the original source and explain how they worked on the project. Always double check, and ask the actual wedding planner or photographer what they can tell you about the posting pro’s involvement.
IMAGE SEARCH: Did you know that you can search for an image via google? Simple drag the image you love into the search bar and do a little digging. You would be able to trace back the original origin of the photo, and also see where else the image has appeared. Pay particular attention to weddings that have been published by third party blogs and magazines, as the editors will list the legitimate vendors that were involved in the project.
TAGS AND COMMENTS: From time to time, vendors will share the work of other pros to showcase inspiration or to highlight a relationship. Legitimate vendors will note clearly that the work they are sharing is not their own. They will list detailed credits in the captain and note that the images and videos shared are not from events that they have produced. However, less scrupulous people will share work without specifically saying who it belongs to. They will craft comments and captions that make it seems as if they did the work, and they will “hide” the real vendors as tags in the image. This is tricky, as the poster will say things such as “I never claimed it was mine” or “well, I tagged you in the image” to deflect responsibility. I know that it sounds crazy, but you should always do your due diligence and ensure that there are no hidden tags or credits that you may be missing.
ASK FOR FULL SET OF IMAGES: It is very easy for someone to repost one piece of work and claim it as their own. It is much more difficult to hijack an entire gallery. While qualifying your vendors, ask to see the full set of images from the weddings you love. Not just the public gallery that they are showing; ask for the full set of images. Wedding pros who have actually worked an event will have their own behind the scenes photos they can share.
It may sound like a lot of work, but vetting your wedding professionals - especially your wedding planner - is one of the most important things you will do while building your team. Hire the right person with the right credentials - one that also sees the world as you wish it were - and you are all but guaranteed to love not just the final product, but the process. However, if you fall victim to someone who claims work that is not their own or that overly embellishes their experience, and you are likely doomed to find yourself steeped in regret. (For a real-couple’s account of their experience having hired the wrong wedding planner, watch my VIDEO or listen to my PODCAST.)
How can we as wedding professionals protect ourselves from unsavory “pros” who pass our work off as their own?
Perhaps you are wedding professional that has had your work “borrowed” by your competition; what then? Every established wedding professional that I know has experienced this. Some attempt to prevent theft and unauthorized usage by putting large logos and watermarks on their images. This is an awful look and prevents the real pros from properly showcasing their art. Additionally, anyone who wants to take any image can and will easily get around a logo. I do not believe in compromising the work to prevent the bad behavior of others. I do believe in addressing the behavior, however, and doing your best to stop others from being actively injurious.
I am not a lawyer, but I have taken the following steps with great success over the years:
If you find that your work is being used without your consent, the first thing to do is to send a message directly to the offending party. Let them know that you have become aware of their unauthorized use of your work. State clearly that you do not give this person permission to use your image/video/design/words and request that they take it down. Next, you should reach out to all of the pros that worked on the wedding or event in question and let them know that another business is sharing their work inappropriately and without credit. In my experience, other vendors will be just as disgruntled by this action as you are, and they will also reach out to the offending party. Peer pressure is a powerful influence, and often encourages the poster to remove the images they have posted. If, after all this, you still find that your work has not been removed, make your plea public. Post a comment on the image that clearly states that the work being is yours, and that it does not belong to the posting business. Request that they remove the image and make a note to follow up and ensure that they take it down. Screengrab the image, and keep a detailed record of your requests and the business’ response to them. If a week passes with no resolution, you can escalate your request by sending a cease and desist letter. In layman’s terms, “cease” means to stops doing something and “desist” advises them not to resume the behavior. This type of notification will typically be the last step you need to take in order to resolve the issue. After this, you need to either bring in an actual attorney or you need to let it go.
Personally, I struggle in letting things like this go. But I also believe that every moment I spent policing the behaviors of others takes away from the time and energy I can put into creating something new. That doesn’t mean that I stand by and allow others to wantonly steal my work. It just means that I won’t allow them to steal my time or my joy along with it.
Instead, we fight the good fight. We do the best we can. We share the work of others to celebrate them and to share inspiration, and we protect that which we created in honor of not only our work, but for the clients that we created it for. Anything else disrespects the process, the journey, and the story. If we fail to honor those things, then we have nothing. And pretty without purpose will always fall flat.
And so my engaged friends, continue to seek inspiration online. Pin the photos you love, save the Instagrams that inspire you, and use the many resources available online to educate yourself about who you are working with and what you are buying. Buy from and work with the best, and remember that integrity and art are a winning combination.
Always….
PS - My friends at Anee Atelier recently published their own account of having not only their work but their entire site plagiarized. (You can read their incredible article here).

This past Friday, I had the pleasure of e-chatting on Instagram with a friend and fellow writer by the name of Craig Atkinson. I could spend time pre-ambling by saying just how great of a wordsman/sketch artist he is, but I’ll let the writer chat speak for itself. Mind you, this was kind of a laidback conversation between two fans of literature, creating literature, and general passion project fiends, so apart from a few corrected typos during the live talk, the majority of this is unedited. Also be sure to stop by Iron Lung Press and order a copy of Craig’s chapbook titled “The Longest Weekend.” It’s currently out of stock (because it’s that wonderful), but I’m sure the reprint will be making its way webside very soon. You can also find two of my chapbooks on the ILP website, titled “The House of Wander en Crone” and “Regection.”
Blankpagesofmine: So first off, good morning. I find it interesting that when you and I chat on Instagram it’s on completely opposite schedules.
Craig: Haha. Good morning.
Blankpagesofmine: It’s funny because I’ll be up at the crack of dawn and we’ll chat for a bit, then I’ll go to work, you’re out for the night, then by the time I’m leaving you’re up again. Not sure it gets much more backwards than that haha. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to chat with me a little about our beloved craft.
Craig: You’re welcome. It works the same for me too. While I’m at work, the US is quiet. But I’ve always lived in this time zone, so nothing new to me. Australia is a hour ahead of Japan.
Blankpagesofmine: Makes sense, it’s become your normal day-to-day routine. How long have you been out in Tokyo now? What brought you out there from Australia in the first place?
Craig: It’s a little complicated, but I first landed in Tokyo in 2007 on a working holiday visa, after a year and a half in London. I lived here for another year and a half, and in that time a met my wife. We’d been together a year when my visa ended, so she decided to move to Australia with me. We lived there for 5 years, then 2013 we moved back to Tokyo.
Blankpagesofmine: That’s a very interesting movement back and forth between a few places! And also a very cool romantic story, by the way. No wonder you’re a writer, the backstory of Craig is easily something I could picture reading in an engaging novel. I’m jealous of the relocation aspect of your career because it’s something I’ve never experienced personally. I’m sure it’s had a fair share of work and effort put behind it as well, but I imagine you’re pleased with how everything turned out since first leaving Australia. I also find it fascinating because as writers, I believe that our words and stories are products of the environments we’ve lived and roamed around in. How do you draw on those locations in the chapbooks, zines, etc. that you’ve written?
Craig: My whole childhood is broken up into moving houses. I moved so many times within the same town, then in my 20s involved a lot of moves too.
A lot of my work is drawn and about the past. A certain memory will be linked to one of the places I lived.
The story sounds interesting now, but to a confused 22 year old, it was hell.
Blankpagesofmine: Wow, you’re a dude on the move for sure. I can relate, in my twenties I moved five times leading up to where I live today. And let me say for the record, the more books you buy, the more books you have to move up and down flights of stairs. The last place I relocated to, the mover actually almost threw out his back when carrying my box of espionage books! Whew. I did warn him in advance though haha. Anyway, that’s very cool! It’s interesting how your twenties, for many of us at least, were confusing and disorientating, but make for some of the best writing material one could possibly conjure up. Moving, puddle jumping from place-to-place, I can definitely pinpoint some of that in the works I’ve read of yours. Let’s get to some of your amazing publications. Between Coffee & People and The Longest Weekend, I can’t choose which one I enjoyed more. I also am drawn to the way you mesh art with writing, which isn’t something you see blended with such finesse. What inspired you to be so bold and creative with it?
Craig: Firstly, thanks.
I always considered myself terrible at drawing. And the first two Coffee & People I used photos. Then I heard on a podcast how important it is to just play for 5 minutes each day, so I bought a small notebook and started drawing, and what has came out of that is all sorts of things, including zine covers. If my writing has taught me anything, it’s by doing something every day improvement will usually follow, and that’s happening in my drawing. And for bold….
I’m 39 now, so one thing I’ve realized is that you just have to pick one or two things, you don’t even need to be good at it. Just pick something you like and are interested in, and go all in. You never know what might come of it. Also, throw some of your past in there. In my late teens I was into diy punk rock stuff. I might have lost touch in my late 20s and early 30s, but it’s never too late to return to your true love.
Blankpagesofmine: Probably one of the best tips that an artist could get, to practice for small windows of time each day just to see how the experience ups the ante a little. I agree, my sketches aren’t what I or anyone would call pieces worthy of an art gallery, but I try to spend time with it each day in the manner that you suggest. And in your case, it’s easy to see how it’s payed off. You designed one heck of a catchy logo for Iron Lung Press recently and did a mockup for the brand that I’m developing as well. Would you say that there’s a simplistic beauty to drawing and sketching that manages to see the light of day because of the wonderful world of zine and chapbook writing?
Craig: Totally. I used to have a blog, and felt so limited due to my very limited computer skills.
Blankpagesofmine: I’m inspired just to read how you feel about sticking to the passion projects that a person holds sacred. No matter the age, these things are vital to who we are and personally I couldn’t imagine a day without writing/sketching/creating. If the world has some intangible system of checks and balances, responsibilities and routine lay on one side, while being an artist/creator course corrects the other side to an even level. Glad to hear that you’re working hard at it! What’s next for you in terms of projects? What can your fans and fans-to-be expect in the upcoming months?
Craig: I just wrote a very short book review that I made into a mini zine. I want to do more of them. I’m also in the middle (and struggling) of a longer story that I’m trying to write. In the past few months. I’ve made 5 or 6 mini zines as they are easy to do in my down time at work, and also fit well while I’m working on a longer piece of writing.
Blankpagesofmine: I remember you mentioning the book review mini zine before, that’s going to the top of my queue if you end up pushing it out into a bigger release. It’s like they say in baseball, “these are the dog days.” The intro to a story or novel usually starts with a bang and then it’s surviving those hallowing dog days through to the end. I wish you luck with that, I’m sure you’ll find a way to see through it. That’s a versatile approach which I dig very much, not putting all your eggs in one basket and piecing together a few works at once. On a side and complete unrelated note, I’ve been wanting to ask for awhile now. 1) Are you big into music/what bands and songs get the creatively motivational wheels churning for you? 2) What’s a big to-do in your region for fun? Going to a theater to see films? Outdoors time? Exercise? All of the above?
Craig: Yeah, writing is a weird beast. I fight with it for months, then in some random place I get the answer of how to end the story, and I’ll have to scribble it down on a piece of paper there and then.
I used to be heavily into music.
Since 95 when I was 15 and heard Dookie for the first time. I was also learning the drums at that time, so a few years later I met some friends and we decided to start a band.
We played together for 3 years, also practicing daily.
I moved away from music when I was 25 (2005) when I started traveling. I didn’t, and still don’t have a computer (write on my phone or iPad), and just started reading.
Now, I listen to a bit of music, but currently focused on books. (I know some people will be mind blown)
Fun things??? Hmmm…. Drinking good coffee, writing, and reading.
Blankpagesofmine: To shamelessly quote one of the greats, “when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.” And here’s the living proof! Dookie was a crazy addictive album, I’m with you there. Between that and a few other 90s rock/punk/grunge boppers, it’s all I wanted to listen to. That must have been a heck of a time, what instrument did you play? Any vocals? And of course, the most prominent and important question here…what was the name of the band?? Haha. If there was ever a more perfect substitute based on the circumstances, you can’t go wrong with reading. NO WAY! We love those things over here too! I guess the world is smaller than I originally thought 🙂 nice to see that opposite ends of the world share similar interests.
Craig: I played drums. I wrote one song, and sang it. I’d drummed for 2 years and the other two just started learning their instruments the week we started. We were friends first. You can find an album we recorded on Spotify. We were called Mondo Pest. I had very little to do with words and reading back then, but the lead singer (who is still playing live shows) did introduce me to my favorite zinester, Cometbus.
We recorded on a number of things (comps and alike), but the album is the only thing I can find online.
Blankpagesofmine: Get out of here, an album on Spotify? How insane is that, I never would’ve known. I know exactly what I’ll be listening to come Monday on my commute to work. Drumming is one of the most skilled instruments out there and I think that’s awesome. Never had a knack for it, but I did play the trumpet for awhile. I do dabble in the fine art of Guitar Hero every now and again though (insert rock on emoji). This has been a really great chat man and I appreciate you taking the time out on an early weekend morning to do so! We will have to rally again for a Part II to this discussion, because I didn’t get a chance to get through a chunk of what I wanted to because the topics just transpired into an incredible realm of their own.
Craig: Haha. I was terrible, and still are. Seriously.
Thanks man.

Digital aspirations and paper pages : Why analog media continues to thrive in a digital world.
Painting is one of the most archaic ways to create an image. In a world dominated by digital imagery, which can be easily and endlessly reproduced, there remains a demand for the irreproducible. When thinking about what humans want, the easiest place to begin would be to look at our senses, and their importance in shaping our perception of the world. The term “analog” and “digital” can be interpreted in a number of ways, and the digital/analog split goes back much farther than most initially think.
Portrait of Akhenaten's daughters Max Headroom
We like our senses. Why do some people still want to play a record when they can play an mp3? The reason is one based on a human desire to touch and feel things. Most of us still see things with our eyes, touch things with our hands, and hear things with our ears.
What are the differences between analog and digital? :
The roots of the word analog comes from greek “ana” which means parallel/copy of , and “logos” which means reality. In this regard one could argue that analog means media which is more equivalent to reality. It runs in parallel to reality itself. Whereas the “digital” is a quantized version of this reality. It’s more binary in nature.
Ralph Gerard, who explored this dichotomy in 1951, said that “an analogical system is one in which one of two variables is continuous on the other, while in a digital system the variable is discontinuous and quantized” (qtd. in Wilder 243). It is from Gerard that we get the prototypical analog device, the slide rule—it’s continuous numbering, as well as meaningful spatiality, wherein the further down the number is, the larger it is—and the abacus as the prototypical digital device, due to the ‘on-or-off-ness’ of the beads, where they are either counted or not. This latter conception of digitality has principally to do with the language of binary, used by today’s digital devices, in its utilization of 1s and 0s.

We are the robots:
Our bodies are increasingly subject to more regulation from technological advancements. From stints put into our hearts to keep the blood pumping, to glasses which help many to see the world in focus. There is little doubt that our bodies are being integrated with technology at a rapid pace, and it would be hard to argue that advancements in science are a detriment in any way. However, one aspect of becoming a cyborg doesn’t involve upgrades to the physical “hardware” so to speak (our flesh, guts and bones) but rather to the creation of what is termed the “digital self”. This is the idea that digital technologies have an enormous impact on our notion of what the self is. The digital has a tendency to be more inward focused. Meaning that it is becoming more difficult to understand what’s going on inside of them without some sort of specialized knowledge. We can understand that a diamond tip on a record player stylus fits into a groove on a piece of vinyl that correspond to vibrations made during a recording, and that this same sound can be reproduced through the use of speakers. Now, if we compare this to playing a song on spotify, on our phone, through bluetooth speakers we get a very different interaction with the song itself because there is no record we can hold in our hands, there is no needle which scrapes along the surface of a circular piece of vinyl, it’s all in the air, like magic. Even when the song is over, the data is being gathered by spotify about how long we listened to the song, whether we liked it or not, and then that algorithm tries to find other music that we like so we continue to listen. Can you imagine telling someone in the 1970s that in the future a small device you carried around in your pocket would not only play music through speakers without wires, but could actually recommend over artists you’d like? It would be the stuff of science fiction, but here we are today.
The result of these specialized looks by artificial intelligence and computers has caused people to become more inward looking, and more focused on their own thoughts and feelings. Shanyang Zhao studies the online communications of teenagers, and he saw this manifested in the creation in what he termed the digital self “The digital self is . . . more oriented toward one’s inner world, focusing on thoughts, feelings and personalities rather than one’s outer world, focusing on height, weight, and looks” (396)
Marshall McLuhan and Mass Media as a narcotic agent:
“Electric media is an extension of ourselves, a communal act...an electronic world re-tribalizes men.”
“A point of view means a static fixed position, and you can’t have a point of view in the electric age. It’s impossible to have a point of view in the electric age, and have any meaning at all. You’ve got to be everywhere at once, whether you like it or not, you’ve got to be participating in everything at the same time, and that is not a point of view”
It is often stated that McLuhan predicted the internet, and it’s hard not to see the parallels popping up everywhere on facebook, instagram and snapchat. Jaron Lanier was at the forefront of a lot of the tech boom in the 80s and 90s, and is said to have come up with the term virtual reality. He’s a fierce opponent to social media, and has said that “This is just like those other examples in the past where you have a mass addiction with a commercial interest behind it. The difference, in this case, is that the side effect is to disconnect humanity from reality.”
Portraiture in the age of Deep Fakes, Digital Photos and Polaroids:
The advent of digital photography allowed everyone to document their life endlessly. One only need an internet connection and there isn’t even any need for an increase of the physical memory needed to even store the photos. They can be uploaded directly to the cloud. In this regard the medium itself is never touched. There is no film that needs to be developed. This has changed both the way that photographs are taken, and the importance of the event at which the photo is taken, but also in the way they shape ones experience with the world. Bernard Stiegler addresses how these changes take place in his essay “The Discrete Image.” Stiegler argues that with analog there was a certain faith that people had when looking at it, that the events there actually happened. In the digital age this faith is completely eroded and people look at every photo skeptically as to whether or not what is present is actually real (“Discrete Image” 150)
Paint as a Slow Media:
One reason why artists are still attracted to these older mediums may have something to do with the speed that it takes to make with them and how that effects the creative process. For instance, with digital painting a mark can immediately be “undone” by hitting Ctrl-Z. The options are endless, whereas with oil paint you not only get a few chances to make a mark on part of a canvas and then you’ve also got to wait at least a day for it to dry before you can paint on top of it. Similarly with film, a photographer may spend more time focusing on compositional elements because he only knows he’s got a limited amount of film. This changes the interaction with the subjects being photographed and results in different photos.
Hand vs No hand: Computer graphics are currently helped along with a great deal of digital “helpers” that can create textures and special effects that can dress up a digital drawing and make it into a lion.
Ownership of analog and digital media:
One of the qualities often associated with digital media is the ease with which it can be reproduced, and companies like spotify, itunes, netflix, etc. all do everything in their power to link your usage of a digital file expressly through their sites. You don’t ever really own a film that you watch on netflix, rather you have the right to stream it through a subscription service. This has changed the way that music is shared. One of the more beloved aspects of a “mix tape” was the fact that you could give it to someone, and they in turn could give it to someone. It was a physical object that held the contents of the music within it. With paintings, prints can be made of a particular piece, but someone must buy the original in order to own it at its highest quality. This connects painting to these other analog mediums. The focus is on the original, not a reproduction of it. This is one thing which still leads to paintings having some sort of value. Collectors want to buy the object that sat in an artist’s studio, not some poster of it.
How artists have reacted to digital media:
Artists have often employed the use of plans and mathematical formulations in the creation of their work. The show at the Whitney entitled "Programmed: Rules, Codes, and Choreographies in Art, 1965-2018" explored these ideas.
