Madelene B. Hirth, “Social Problems of a Library Staff.” Library Journal 46 (February 15, 1921)
#Madelene Hirth you’re the only bitch in this house I ever respected#this isn’t a proper citation obviously. Sorry ¯\_(ツ)_/¯#idk I thought this was so funny and so sad#because this article talks about how employers should take an interest in helping their staff find good housing and make sure that they’re#socially welcome both at their job and in the wider community if they’re new in the city#to the point that she recommends that Staff secretaries have a list of good places to live and actually procure the rooms for a new employee#before she even shows up! And then send someone to meet her at the depot if she doesn’t know anyone in the city!!#And nowadays even ‘good’ employers would never dream of doing any of those things. I hate it here

Hey there, so I really like history as a subject, and I'm pretty good at it. The thing is, I don't know what my career options would be if I studied it, or if I would be able to make money. My parents are heavily discouraging me from taking it as a major. As a 'historian' in training' what's your take? Thank you
Hi there! Sorry for the delay, ‘tis the hectic season…
Oh man, I have so many thoughts for you. Full disclosure: this is something I have worked on a LOT over the course of my graduate career both at my uni and on a national level; most of my advice, however, comes from a PhD candidate’s perspective and may not be directly helpful to an undergraduate, and I should also emphasize that everything I can say on this is very firmly based on the U.S. market only. That being said, a lot of what I can say can be universally applied, so here we go -
The number of history undergraduates in the U.S. has plummeted in the last decade or so, from it previously being one of the most popular majors. There are many interacting reasons for this: a changeover from older to younger, better-trained, energetic professors who draw in and retain students has been very slow to occur, partly because of a lack of a mandatory retirement age; the humanities have been systematically demonized and minimized in favor of the development of STEM subjects, to the occasional benefit of students of color and women but to the detriment of critical public discourse and historical perspective on current events; with many liberal arts colleges going under financially and the enormous expansion of academic bureaucracy everywhere, resources are definitely being diverted away from social and human studies towards fields which are perceived to pay better or perceived, as mentioned in the article above, as being more ‘practical.’ (We do need a ton more healthcare workers/specialists, but that’s a different conversation to have.) But now I feel like quoting a certain Jedi Master: everything your parents say is wrong. Let’s dive into why being a historian is a positive thing for you both as a person and as a professional -
You will be a good reader. As you learn to decipher documents and efficiently and thoroughly read secondary literature, you will develop a particular talent for understanding what is important about any piece of writing or evidence (and this can go for visual and aural evidence as well). This will serve you well in any position in which you are collecting/collating information and reporting to colleagues or superiors, and evaluating the worth of resources. Specific example - editorial staff at publishing houses either private or academic, magazines, etc.
You will be a good writer. This will get you a good job at tons of places; don’t underestimate it. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been astonished (not in a punitive way, of course, but definitely with a sense of befuddlement) by how badly some of my Ivy-league students can write. Good writing is hard, good writing is rare, and good writing is a breath of fresh air to any employer who puts a high premium upon it in their staff. History in principle is the study of change; history in practice is presenting information in a logical, interesting, and persuasive manner. Any sort of institution which asks you to write reports, summaries, copy, etc. etc. will appreciate your skills.
You will be a good researcher. This sounds like a given, but it’s an underappreciated and vital skill. Historians work as consultants. Historians work in government - almost every department has an Office of the Historian - and in companies, writing company histories and maintaining institutional archives. A strong research profile will also serve you well if you want to go on to work in museum studies and in libraries public or private/academic. As a historian, you will know not just where to find information, but what questions you have to ask to get to the answer of how to tackle, deconstruct, and solve a problem. This is relevant to almost any career path.
You will provide perspective. Historians react to current events in newspapers and online - not just on politics, but culture as well (my favorite article of this week is about the historicity of The Aeronauts). Historians act as expert witnesses in court proceedings. Historians write books, good books, not just meant for academic audiences but for millions upon millions of readers who need thoughtful, intelligent respite from the present. Historians work for thinktanks, providing policy analysis and development (a colleague of mine is an expert on current events of war in Mali and works for multiple thinktanks and organizations because of it). Historians work for nonprofits or lobbying groups on issues of poverty, environmental safety, climate change, and minority and indigenous rights. In a world when Texas school textbooks push the states’ rights narrative, historians remind us that the Civil War was about slavery. Historians remind us that women and people of color have always existed. In this time and world where STEM subjects are (supposedly) flooding the job market, we need careful historical perspective more than ever. We need useful reactions to the 2016 election, to the immigration travesties on display at the southern border, to the strengthening of right-wing parties in Europe - and history classes, or thoughtfully historical classes on philosophy and political science, are one of the few places STEM and business students gain the basic ability to participate in those conversations. [One of my brightest and most wonderful students from last year, just to provide an anecdote, is an astrophysics major who complained to me in a friendly conversation this semester that she never got the chance to talk about ‘deep’ things anymore once she had passed through our uni’s centralized general curriculum, which has a heavy focus on humanities subjects.]
You will be an educator. Teaching is a profession which has myriad challenges in and of itself, but in my experience of working with educators there is a desperate need for secondary-school teachers in particular to have actual content training in history as opposed to simply being pushed into classrooms with degrees which focus only on pedagogical technique. If teaching is a vocation you are actually interested in, getting a history degree is not a bad place to start at all. And elementary/high schools aside, you will be teaching someone something in every interaction you have concerning your subject of choice. Social media is a really important venue now for historians to get their work out into the world and correct misconceptions in the public sphere, and is a place where you can hone a public and instructive voice. You could also be involved in educational policy, assessment/test development (my husband’s field, with a PhD in History from NYU), or educational activism.
If some of this sounds kind of woolly and abstract, that’s because it is. Putting yourself out there on the job market is literally a marketing game, and it can feel really silly to take your experience of 'Two years of being a Teaching Assistant for European History 1500-1750’ and mutate it to 'Facilitated group discussions, evaluated written work from students [clients], and ran content training sessions on complex subjects.’ But this sort of translation is just another skill - one that can be learned, improved, and manipulated to whatever situation you need it to fit.
Will you make money? That’s a question only you can answer, because only you know what you think is enough money. That being said, many of the types of careers I’ve mentioned already are not low-paying; in my experience expertise is, if you find the right workplace and the rewarding path, usually pretty well-remunerated.
Specific advice? Hone your craft. Curate an active public presence as a historian, an expert, a patient teacher, and as as person enthusiastic about your subject. Read everything and anything. Acknowledge and insist upon complexity, and celebrate it when you can.
And finally - will any of what I’ve said here make it easy? No, because no job search and no university experience is easy these days. It’s a crazy world and there are a lot of awful companies, bosses, and projects out there. But I do very firmly believe that you can find something, somewhere, that will suit your skills, and, hopefully, your passions too.
Resources for you: the American Historical Association has a breakdown of their skills-based approach to the job market, reports on the job market(s) for history PhDs collectively called ‘Where Historians Work,’ and a mentorship program, Career Contacts, which could connect you with professional historians in various workplaces. There is a very active community of historians on Twitter; search for #twitterstorians. For historians who identify as female, Women Also Know History is a newer site which collates #herstorian bios and publications to make it easier for journalists to contact them for expert opinions. ImaginePhD provides career development tools and exercises for graduate students, but could probably be applied to undergrads as well. The Gilder Lehrman Institute is one of the premier nonprofits which develops and promotes historical training for secondary school teachers and classroom resources (U.S. history only). Job listings are available via the AHA, the National Council on Public History, and the IHE, as well as the usual job sites. And there’s an awful lot more out there, of course - anyone who reads or reblogs this post is welcome to add field-specific or resource-specific info.
I hope this helps, Anon, or at least provides you with a way to argue in favor of it to your parents if it comes to that. Chin up!

The Grand Tranquility Hotel (VIII)
Pairing: Alex Turner/Reader
Summary: An eccentric hotel owner and an inquisitive writer find solace in each other when they both seemed to be at the edge of rock bottom.
Notes: I hope I gave this chapter enough build-up. Bit of a different perspective, too. Hope you enjoy!
Let me know if you’d like to be added to the tag list.
Chapter VIII - Golden Trunks
Alex threw his coat over his shoulders tiredly. He had to deal with the aftermath of the unravelled fraud committed in his own hotel, and it wasn’t something he was looking particularly forward to. Though he had good connections with the city’s chief policeman James Ford, the strenuous investigation and the stack of paperwork it would entail was something they both dreaded.
He’d asked Matt to taxi him, because he simply hadn’t slept well enough to trust himself to drive properly. It had been this way for months on end now, and he knew it was as a result of the stress he’d been dealing with. Whatever the doctor had given him didn’t work, so he’d always end up spending the nights on his balcony with a smoke and a glass of his favourite whiskey. What he wouldn’t do for one of those right now.
“Heading off again?”
She was leaning against the doorway, looking charming as ever. “We missed you during breakfast.”
“Considering Jamie’s blood pressure, I don’t think I was missed all that much, love,” he replied with a small smile. “I’m headed off to the city. I still have some business with the police to handle.”
“Have fun with that.”
He hummed, “If I’m at the brink of being bored to death, I’ll just remember I still have a guest I need to keep my eye on before she ruins my good reputation.”
“Did you just admit to fantasizing about me, mister Turner?”
He laughed, before hearing the honk of the Cadillac echoing through the lobby. “I hope to see you at lunch, writer.” He closed the final button of his coat before stepping out the front doors.
“You didn’t answer my question!” he heard her call after him. He left with a feeling of boyish giddiness, and he wasn’t quite sure what to think of it.
His trip to and from the police office had left him more tired than he wanted to admit, and it had taken up more time of his day than expected. It wasn’t until dinner that he was able to join his guest and staff for his first proper meal of the day. He scolded himself, knowing what his mother would’ve said to him if she saw him like this.
The dining hall appeared to be more dimly lit than usual and he wanted to ask Nick about it, but when he saw him carelessly conversing with Jamie at the table, his conscience decided against it. He knew how hard Nick had been working the past few weeks.
They all greeted him with cautionary smiles and hellos, which he’d gotten used to over the past few years. Previous events had led him to be stricter about certain things and he knew very well that it had put a strain on their friendship. Part of him missed the old days, but he realized it was better this way. If the hotel did ever go bankrupt, they’d blame him, and they would be right to do so. For if they didn’t blame him, they’d blame themselves, and he wanted to prevent that at all costs.
She was sitting next to him, and as the predominant conversation the guys were having was able to drown out anything else, she muttered, “I thought we’d be seeing you at lunch, mister Turner?”
“My apologies, love. Business took me longer than expected,” he disclosed softly, “I hope my staff kept you entertained?”
“I’m very capable of keeping myself entertained, mister Turner. I don’t need your staff to manage.” She had a devious twinkle in her eyes, which made him smirk. “Luckily you don’t,” he replied, “all they’re good at is getting you into trouble.”
“Speaking of trouble-“ She pulled a newspaper from her bag and slid it over to him, which quieted down everyone at the table. Alex’ eyes sleekly scanned over the headline.
‘The Grand Tranquility Hotel: A blissful sanctuary with the most charming personnel - and owner.”
The other men at the table seemed to be waiting warily for his response, clearly already having been informed of the whole ordeal. When Alex blankly kept rereading it a dozen times over, feeling a numbness settle over him, Nick decided to speak up; “The article was very well-received, Alex. I’ve had more bookings for the next holiday than we’ve had all summer.”
“I think this might have saved us, Al,” Matt added, his hand grasping his shoulder supportively.
He finally managed to look up at her. “How did you do it?” He asked, his brow set in a deep furrow.
“Do what?”
“How did you manage to make it to the front paper?”
“I pulled some connections,” she replied with a small smile.
He blinked. It didn’t make any sense to him. Connections? How did she get it in the paper so soon? When had she been planning this?
“But, why?” When she gave him a look of confusion, he elaborated, “You owe nothing to this hotel. Your mother had a history here, sure. But your stay here hasn’t been relaxing for you in the slightest. Why help us?”
“Unlike your previous presumptions, mister Turner, I don’t have any ulterior motives. I simply want to see good people succeed in life, like my mother used to.”
Dinner was continued with the tension having been relieved completely. He stole long looks at her as they ate, and it was everything about her that suddenly seemed to intrigue him beyond words. How someone could be so utterly pure with their intentions, he didn’t know. It bewildered him to an immense extent and he suddenly felt very unworthy of all the things she’d done for them over the small amount of time she’d known them.
When they were done, he asked if he could walk her back to her room. She said yes.
“You never answered my question,” she commented, having arrived before the pristine white door of room 521. He gave her a look that told her he wasn’t sure what she was talking about, and she gave him a knowing smile. She stepped closer to him and he felt a warmth filling his chest in a pleasant way. Her gentle breath sent a tingling sensation along his spine when it reached his ear. “I’ll be upfront, mister Turner. Sometimes I fantasize about you, too.”
He awoke with a start, and Matt gave him a look through the rear-view mirror. He’d fallen asleep in the car after visiting the police station. He’d dreamt it all and wanted nothing more than to hit his head against the door of the car repeatedly.
Because finally, he realized what this incessant gut feeling had been at the hands of some laughable dream. This writer, who he was ever so cautious with, who gave him stress to no relief and made him beyond distracted of everything around him, had managed to sulk into his deeply barricaded heart when he’d done so much to prevent it from happening.
It wasn’t just the day she’d arrived, where he had told Matt to take care of everything because it was just one guest. Because all hotel owners know that having just one guest can have more impact on a hotel than a fully booked one ever could. It wasn’t just the fact that he’d pushed her away every time she tried to bring up her idea for her book because no one should ever know what really happened.
It had all started with her mother’s visit. The time it was off-season, and she was the only visitor.
She had called him a charming young man. “You should meet my girl,” she’d said, “She would fall in love with you in a heartbeat.” He’d gracefully declined the offer, of course. But now, suddenly knowing who this beautiful and intriguing woman turned out to be, he felt as if he’d made the biggest mistake not having accepted her mother’s good-humoured invite.
He thanked Matt as he stepped out of the car, before hurriedly making his way inside in search of the writer he was so giddy to see. He found her in the library, curled up with the same romance novel they’d bantered over not days before. “Welcome back,” she smiled, “Would you care to go on a walk with me?” And he was glad to finally be able to accompany her.
The drowning noise of the fountain seemed to derive him of some of his anxiousness and he deeply breathed in the fresh evening air. It was a poor attempt at finding his courage, which he was so deeply in search of these days.
“Who was the architect of the building, if I may ask?” she wondered, stopping for a brief moment with him to look up at the structure. He huffed, “A substantial question. But not the one you’ve evidently been meaning to ask for a long time.”
She looked back at him, and he inspected her face. He had almost second guessed his current decision, if it hadn’t been for the way her eyes lit up with an intimate intrigue. He held out his arm to her in a silent invite, which she took gracefully. Leading her down the illuminated driveway towards the treeline as the gravel cracked beneath their feet, he started by finally telling the truth.
“I think you remember that picture I showed you with your mother in it.” She nodded expectantly. “You recall the staff member in between Jamie and Matt? He used to be one of my best mates in high school, too. His name was Andy Nicholson. And he was probably the base of everything I worked on that had to do with the hotel.
He was the one to introduce me to this girl. She was as pretty as she was smart, and it was as if she had fallen from the sky because it so happened to be that she’d always wanted to work in a hotel. During her first interview, she told me how much she’d always been in awe of The Grand Tranquility and how it would give her a lifetime of happiness if she could get employment here. I didn’t think much of her at the time, but Andy had put in a good word for her, so I hired her in a whim. We had lots of staff at the time, so it wasn’t uncommon to hire someone new on a trial period.”
“Was she good at her job?” she asked in interest.
“She was, which is why I never saw a fault in her. She was a hard worker and never seemed to have any ill intent, towards guests nor other staff members. Everyone loved her, and I quickly became infatuated.”
He swallowed and she could tell he was struggling to continue. She slid her hand down his arm to cautiously interlock her fingers with his, which he responded to agreeably.
“It lasted for a long time,” he admitted, “And I would have done anything for her. It wasn’t until Andy suddenly started asking questions that I became suspicious. And not towards her, either. I was wondering what my best friend, who had introduced the two of us, was doing asking ridiculous questions and making assumptions about her that I was certain weren’t true. We argued about it, more than once, until he finally told me that I should fire her because he knew something was up with her. And I fucking sacked him instead. Because I didn’t want anyone talking about someone I truly loved like that.”
“Oh, Alex…” she sighed, halting him to a stop and squeezing his hand in comfort.
“He turned out to be right in the end. She’d been committing fraud the entire time we were together, and stole practically all of our funds. We had no evidence since she was smart enough to leave no traces and had fled the country by the time we found out.”
“It’s not your fault. Whatever drove you so far to put your friendship on the line, that’s all on her. I’m sure Andy understands that?”
He huffed, “I haven’t had the guts to contact him.”
“Then maybe that would be a step in the right direction?” she implied carefully.
His lip managed to form into an amused grin, despite the situation. “You don’t cease to amaze me, writer. I’ve just told you my biggest secret and you’re still sympathizing with me.”
“Well, let’s just say I like you better when you open up to me than when you’re shouting at me.”
His gaze softened. “I’m sorry, truly. I’d take everything back if I could.”
“Don’t be. You had your reasons to be cautious and now I see them more clearly.”
Her eyes flickered in the shimmering light of the yellowish bulbs hanging from the trees, and it made the colour in them so much more vibrant to him. He felt himself leaning closer to her, his arm sliding around the low of her back to diminish the space between them until finally, their lips touched, and electricity sparked. She closed her eyes and caressed a hand over his cheek, melting into his warm embrace like chocolate in a cup of steaming milk.
He moaned softly against her and it lit up everything inside her while he deepened their kiss, wanting to taste and feel every part of her until they ran out of breath. They held each other close, as if either letting the other know they felt comfortable with whatever it was between them.
“I’m putting my trust in you, writer,” he murmured against her lips, his glazy eyes not once breaking contact with hers, “Something I don’t do very often anymore.”
She nodded breathlessly, running her fingers through his soft hair. “I would never do anything to hurt you, Alex. I promise.”

A classic and a must-read; I’ve put a few selections in the body of this post, but I strongly recommend reading the entire thing as linked.
"I've had several cases over the years in which the anti-abortion patient had rationalized in one way or another that her case was the only exception, but the one that really made an impression was the college senior who was the president of her campus Right-to-Life organization, meaning that she had worked very hard in that organization for several years. As I was completing her procedure, I asked what she planned to do about her high office in the RTL organization. Her response was a wide-eyed, 'You're not going to tell them, are you!?' When assured that I was not, she breathed a sigh of relief, explaining how important that position was to her and how she wouldn't want this to interfere with it." (Physician, Texas)
"In 1990, in the Boston area, Operation Rescue and other groups were regularly blockading the clinics, and many of us went every Saturday morning for months to help women and staff get in. As a result, we knew many of the 'antis' by face. One morning, a woman who had been a regular 'sidewalk counselor' went into the clinic with a young woman who looked like she was 16-17, and obviously her daughter. When the mother came out about an hour later, I had to go up and ask her if her daughter's situation had caused her to change her mind. 'I don't expect you to understand my daughter's situation!' she angrily replied. The following Saturday, she was back, pleading with women entering the clinic not to 'murder their babies.'" (Clinic escort, Massachusetts)
"We too have seen our share of anti-choice women, ones the counselors usually grit their teeth over. Just last week a woman announced loudly enough for all to hear in the recovery room, that she thought abortion should be illegal. Amazingly, this was her second abortion within the last few months, having gotten pregnant again within a month of the first abortion. The nurse handled it by talking about all the carnage that went on before abortion was legalized and how fortunate she was to be receiving safe, professional care. However, this young woman continued to insist it was wrong and should be made illegal. Finally the nurse said, 'Well, I guess we won't be seeing you here again, not that you're not welcome.' Later on, another patient who had overheard this exchange thanked the nurse for her remarks." (Clinic Administrator, Alberta)
"We saw a woman recently who after four attempts and many hours of counseling both at the hospital and our clinic, finally, calmly and uneventfully, had her abortion. Four months later, she called me on Christmas Eve to tell me that she was not and never was pro-choice and that we failed to recognize that she was clinically depressed at the time of her abortion. The purpose of her call was to chastise me for not sending her off to the psych unit instead of the procedure room." (Clinic Administrator, Alberta)
"Recently, we had a patient who had given a history of being a 'pro-life' activist, but who had decided to have an abortion. She was pleasant to me and our initial discussion was mutually respectful. Later, she told someone on my staff that she thought abortion is murder, that she is a murderer, and that she is murdering her baby. So before doing her procedure, I asked her if she thought abortion is murder -- the answer was yes. I asked her if she thought I am a murderer, and if she thought I would be murdering her baby, and she said yes. But murder is a crime, and murderers are executed. Is this a crime? Well, it should be, she said. At that point, she became angry and hostile, and the summary of the conversation was that she regarded me as an abortion-dispensing machine, and how dare I ask her what she thinks. After explaining to her that I do not perform abortions for people who think I am a murderer or people who are angry at me, I declined to provide her with medical care. I do not know whether she found someone else to do her abortion." (Physician, Colorado)
"In 1973, after Roe v. Wade, abortion became legal but had to be performed in a hospital. That of course was changed later. For the first 'legal abortion day' I had scheduled five procedures. While scrubbing between cases, I was accosted by the Chief of the OB/Gyn service. He asked me, 'How many children are you going to kill today?' My response, out of anger, was a familiar vulgar retort. About three months later, this born-again Christian called me to explain that he was against abortion but his daughter was only a junior in high school and was too young to have a baby and he was also afraid that if she did have a baby she would not want to put it up for adoption. I told him he did not need to explain the situation to me. 'All I need to know', I said, 'is that SHE wants an abortion.' Two years later I performed a second abortion on her during her college break. She thanked me and pleaded, 'Please don't tell my dad, he is still anti-abortion.'" (Physician, Washington State)
"I once had a German client who greatly thanked me at the door, leaving after a difficult 22-week abortion. With a gleaming smile, she added: 'Und doch sind Sie ein Mörderer.' ('And you're still a murderer.')" (Physician, The Netherlands)
"My first encounter with this phenomenon came when I was doing a 2-week follow-up at a family planning clinic. The woman's anti-choice values spoke indirectly through her expression and body language. She told me that she had been offended by the other women in the abortion clinic waiting room because they were using abortion as a form of birth control, but her condom had broken so she had no choice! I had real difficulty not pointing out that she did have a choice, and she had made it! Just like the other women in the waiting room." (Physician, Ontario)
"I had a 37 year old woman just yesterday who was 13 weeks. She said she and her husband had been discussing this pregnancy for 2-3 months. She was strongly opposed to abortion, 'but my husband is forcing me to do it.' Naturally, I told her that no one could force her into an abortion, and that she had to choose whether the pregnancy or her husband were more important. I told her I only wanted what was best for her, and I would not do the abortion unless she agreed that it was in her best interest. Once she was faced with actually having to voice her own choice, she said 'Well, I made the appointment and I came here, so go ahead and do it. It's what's best.' At last I think she came to grips with the fact that it really was her decision after all." (Physician, Nevada)
The medical director at a Dallas abortion clinic told this story: A white woman from an affluent north Dallas neighborhood brought her black maid in for an abortion and paid for it. While the maid was in a counseling session, a commotion was heard in the waiting room outside. The maid's employer was handing out anti-abortion leaflets to other women waiting for abortions.
From a clinic director in a mid-western state: "One of the most remarkable cases was a woman who came [from another part of the state] and said she was the Right-to-Life president in her county. 'But,' she said, she 'had become pregnant and had to have an abortion.'"
Many anti-choice women are convinced that their need for abortion is unique -- not like those "other" women -- even though they have abortions for the same sorts of reasons. Anti-choice women often expect special treatment from clinic staff. Some demand an abortion immediately, wanting to skip important preliminaries such as taking a history or waiting for blood test results. Frequently, anti-abortion women will refuse counseling (such women are generally turned away or referred to an outside counselor because counseling at clinics is mandatory). Some women insist on sneaking in the back door and hiding in a room away from other patients. Others refuse to sit in the waiting room with women they call "sluts" and "trash." Or if they do, they get angry when other patients in the waiting room talk or laugh, because it proves to them that women get abortions casually, for "convenience".

Overwhelmed by your pick of dentists? Want to make sure you know how to find a good dentist? I’m confident you will have the tools you need to choose the perfect dentist’s office by the end of this article.
We’ll talk about what you need to know before selecting a new dentist, ways to find a great dentist, the right kind of questions to ask, and even how to spot a bad dentist.
Whether you’re looking because you’re in a new city, your employer switched dental insurance plans, your dentist is retiring, or you’ve just waited a really long time for a dental visit…No need to worry. There are many simple, straightforward ways to choose a dentist who’s right for you and your family.
Disclosure:
Ask the Dentist is supported by readers. If you use one of the links below and buy something, Ask the Dentist makes a little bit of money at no additional cost to you. I rigorously research, test, and use thousands of products every year, but recommend only a small fraction of these. I only promote products that I truly feel will be valuable to you in improving your oral health.
5 Factors to Consider Before Choosing a Dentist
How can you find a good local dentist? The best approach is to take it in stages.
Start by creating a short list of offices to check, then prepare to gather information. Before you know it, you’ll begin a new relationship with a great dentist that can last for years.
So, how do you begin making that list? Let’s look at five important factors in narrowing down your list of potential new dentists.
Factor #1: Is this provider in your dental insurance network?
US readers: dental insurance, particularly for preventative dental care (such as cleanings), may be a factor in choosing a dentist. Since it doesn’t work the same way as medical health insurance, I’ve outlined a few ways to understand working with a new dental practice below based on your insurance status.
If you’re unsure of the answer to this question, your healthcare provider should have a list of participating local dentists. This can typically be found on your health insurer’s website or through your employer (HR is a good place to start). The list can serve as a starting point in the search for the perfect dentist for you and your loved ones.
No dental insurance? No problem! Check out this article on how to keep up with dental visits sans dental insurance. (It’s not as hard as you might think.)
Here are a couple of great questions I’ve been asked on the topic of finding a dentist in your insurance network:
What if I’m satisfied with my current dentist, but they’re not in my network?
Keep going to the dentist you love!
To understand why this is probably the best choice, it’s important to know that dental prices are not standardized like medical charges.
In-network providers sign a contract in which they agree to be paid less than they’d hope to in exchange for being included in the network. The fee isn’t massive, and it’s worth it for many providers. However, if you’re out-of-network, you can technically charge anything you want.
Here are the two options I would recommend, in this order:
Show them your new dental insurance plan to find out if they’re willing to accept whatever the insurance company is willing to pay, then write off the rest. The downside to this is that you could eat up the cap on your dental insurance benefits for the year, which isn’t great if you have major work needed.
Ask for an “in-network fee schedule.” That schedule is set up to normalize every dental billing code and how much they agree to make from every insurance company for those codes. Most offices are willing to accept this, and it means you’ll pay similar prices with your existing dentist as you would by switching to an in-network provider.
Either way, the dental office will still file the claim for you. I suggest setting up an agreement for one of the above options before your appointment, so you understand what you will (and won’t) be required to pay.
What if I want to find a functional dentist, but don’t see one in my list of participating providers?
If your insurance doesn’t cover your ideal functional dentist, you may still be able to find a dentist with similar ideals.
Even if a dentist isn’t classified as a “functional” dentist or registered with that kind of academy of dentistry, dentists should all be familiar with the way diet influences dental health as well as the mouth-body connection. By asking questions about these issues up front, you may be surprised to find a dentist who takes a more functional approach than you first expect. (I discuss this in more detail below.)
Most offices are happy to listen to concerns, answer questions and have you come in for a first-time consult and tour of their office. And if they’re not, think of it as an easy cross off your list!
Plus, refer to the bullets above—even an out-of-network dentist is able to bill your insurance and may be willing to work with you on fee schedules.
Factor #2: Should you choose a dentist who’s a member of the ADA?
Many insurance plans and other resources (websites, etc.) will recommend you only see a dentist approved or registered with the American Dental Association (ADA). But there are other options out there to find a high-quality dentist.
For instance, I am a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM), among others. (See my bio with the full list here.) I am not an ADA-registered dentist, though—I believe their recommendations on things such as fluoride and amalgam fillings aren’t evidence-based.
The dental professionals in the AADSM, and other similar organizations, are fully qualified Doctors of Dentistry. This association focuses much attention, research and training in the area of dental sleep medicine, including sleeping disorders and dental appliances that can be utilized to treat and reverse sleep disorders.
If you’re more comfortable with an ADA-registered dentist, that’s completely okay, too. Other organizations that a good dentist might belong to include:
American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM)
Academy of General Dentistry (Chicago, IL)
American Academy for Oral Systemic Health (AAOSH)
Keep in mind: All of these academies are “pay-to-play.” A dentist selects the ones that line up best with his or her approach to dentistry, but any board-certified dentist can pay for membership. As a member of any academy of dentistry, each dentist commits to that academy’s code of conduct and treatment standards, but they aren’t actively regulated by the association or academy. They do, however, have to keep up with that organization’s continuing education.
More important than the academies they belong to, your dentist should be board-certified and have a current registration with their state’s dental board.
So, should you choose a dentist who’s a member of the ADA? Not necessarily. If you know you struggle with bruxism or sleep apnea, it might make a good idea to partner with a dentist from one of the dental sleep medicine academies. If you’re more concerned with the impact your dental problems might be having on your overall health, an AAOSH dentist may be a better fit.
Don’t live in the US? Organizations like the British Dental Association, Canadian Dental Association, and Australian Dental Association may work for your needs.
Factor #3: Are you looking for a functional dentist?
I practice and promote functional dentistry. In short, this approach to dental care aims to solve problems at their root (no pun intended!) and treat the whole person, understanding that dental health is intrinsically linked to overall health.
More than just regular checkups, cleanings, fillings, crowns, and extractions, the functional dentist will educate you on how best to care for your teeth between regular visits. They will discuss the importance of diet beyond cutting out sugary drinks and candies. You may be prescribed dietary changes or less “mainstream” interventions for your dental health issues.
If that’s not what you’re looking for, that’s okay. Not everyone is interested in functional dentistry.
But if you do want to restrict your search that way, here are links to a few databases that might help to form a list of potential new dentists:
Holistic Dentistry
Campaign for Mercury-Free Dentistry
International Academy for Biologic Dentistry and Medicine (IABDM)
Huggins Applied Dentistry (this requires an application for the organization to connect you with an appropriate dentist)
Mercury-Safe Dentist Directory
Factor #4: What type of dental work are you looking for?
This is paramount to your final decision of which dentist to choose. The answer for how to find a good dentist is tied to what you feel are your greatest dental needs.
Do you want mainly regular checkups and cleanings? The field is wide open. Look for an office where you are comfortable with the dentist and staff, in a friendly but professional environment.
Have questions about sleep habits, apnea, or teeth grinding (bruxism), etc.? The sleep medicine dentist is likely the best choice for you, so you’ll want to search specifically within sleep dentistry organizations.
Are you looking for cosmetic work or other aesthetic dental treatments? In these cases, search for cosmetic dentists with plenty of reviews and before/after evidence for their cosmetic work.
Is your primary focus on your children’s dental care? Pediatric dentists go through the same rigorous education as any other dentist, but their offices are tailored to the young ones in our lives. Be sure to take your child/children with you when looking for the right office. Their first impression will be your most valuable form of discernment! (Here’s more on how to pick a great dentist specifically for your kiddo.)
Have you had a history of frequent cavities or more extensive dental procedures, such as dental surgeries? There are many dentists who share a practice with a specialist who performs root canals and other more extensive oral procedures. They may also have a great referral program with a local endodontist.
There are many other specialist for oral and dental needs, and unlike medical insurance, dental insurance typically doesn’t require a referral to cover these visits. Here are a few specialists you might consider seeing instead of a general dentist for your particular concerns:
Orthodontists deal specifically with treatment of misaligned teeth.
Periodontists specialize in dental treatment and prevention of gum-related diseases. If you have advanced gum disease, it’s a good idea to find a periodontist to partner with for treatment.
Prosthodontists restore and/or replace broken or missing teeth.
Endodontists perform root canals and monitor the healing process for about two years. However, your general/family dentist will be responsible for the accompanying dental crown, so it’s a good idea to work with both dentist and endodontist for a root canal treatment.
Oral/Maxillofacial Surgeons specialize in deep sedation surgeries (beyond laughing gas, etc.) for complex procedures like irregular tooth extractions, cleft palate surgery, or surgery to correct the jaw.
Factor #5: Does the dentist offer a translator?
Many folks speak great conversational second languages but may not be as comfortable or familiar with medical terminology, or know how to have an informed discussion about in-depth treatment plans, etc..
If you live in an area where your first learned language is uncommon, ask the offices you research if they have a translator that speaks your primary language.
What if one is not available, but you like the dentist office for other reasons? I would recommend taking a friend or family member with you who can easily translate, especially if you feel the least bit anxious about your visit or discussions of more extensive medical information.
7 Ways to Find a Good Dentist
I’m often asked: How do I find the best dentist in my area? How do I choose a new dentist?
Once you’ve considered the factors above, you’re ready to narrow down the exact dentist who’s right for you. Here are the best ways to find a good dentist you and your family will love.
1. Ask People You Trust
Ask people you know and trust, like family, close friends, and co-workers. Do they have a happy, bright smile? Find out who keeps it that way! As soon as one of them begins to rave about their dentist, get that name and number.
The best advice I can give about how to find a good dentist is this:
Who do you know who’s had extensive work done beyond standard cleanings or whitening? Find the person you know that raves about a dentist after considerable work, and you’ll be on the right track.
2. Get a Referral from a Physician or Pharmacist
Ask your family doctor or your local pharmacist. It’s a safe bet that these medical professionals have vetted out the dentists they use. These other medical providers probably get feedback on these dentists, so many times, you’ll get a great idea of the best dentists in your area using this method.
3. Search the Database of Your Chosen Dental Society
Compare practices from different associations such as the AADSM, ADA, AGD, etc. Here are links to dentist searches at the major associations listed above:
Find an AADSM Dentist
Find an AGD Dentist
Find an AAOSH Health Professional
American Dental Association: Find a Dentist
British Dental Association: Find a Member Practice
Canadian Dental Association: Contact Your Provincial Dental Association
Australian Dental Association Find a Dentist
4. Review Your Dental Insurance Network
Although dental insurance doesn’t necessarily need to play a part in this decision like medical insurance might, this is still one good way to find a good dentist.
Review the list of general dentists your insurance company provides who participate in your plan. Then, consider the factors I listed in the first section to figure out if one of them is right for you.
5. Google It (Or Use a Dental Provider Review Site)
It sounds almost too simple, but reading patient recommendations will answer many questions you have, and help add to, or eliminate some offices from your list. You can even start by searching “dentist near me” and sorting by the top-rated reviews.
Sites such as CareDash or ZocDoc rely on patient reviews to sell or discourage from one practice or another. These can help you get more specific reviews than a basic Google search may provide.
6. Narrow It Down with Questions + A Website Visit
Once you find your top picks using the above methods, go to their office website and look around.
A good dentist does not have to have a good website. However, a well-designed website, with lots of info about the practice, the staff, their specialties and strengths (and more patient reviews), can be a great indicator of a solid choice for you.
7. Double-Check Board Certification and State Licensure
Are dentists board certified? I’ve been asked this in the past. And the answer is yes.
You can read more about certification, and find out the certifications of your “short list by visiting the American Board of Dental Specialties (ABDS). Almost every single time, you’ll find that your dentist is board certified and has a current state license.
However, there might be that one incredibly rare time that a dentist has failed to complete the necessary steps to get or renew one of these items. In these cases, I’d suggest looking elsewhere.
10 Questions to Ask Before or At Your First Appointment
There are several questions I’d recommend asking your dentist before the end of your first appointment. Depending on your specific needs, there isn’t necessarily a “wrong” answer to most of these questions.
Q:
Do you offer patients nutritional counseling?
A: There are probably traditional dentists who will talk to you about diet. However, they are likely to focus on the no-nos, such as foods and drinks high in sugar or acid content.
A functional dentist, however, will probably share many other nutritional tips and simple lifestyle changes. These will give you the added benefit of stronger teeth, healthier gums, and few cavities, PLUS a healthier you from head to toe. (More on what to eat for better dental health can be found here.)
If you’re not interested in the functional route, this answer may also be important. Some people don’t want nutritional counseling from the dentist and would be put off by it.
Q:
What are your primary goals in patient care?
A: I believe the most desirable answer is something like this: To do as little invasive work as possible, while giving the patients the best opportunity to avoid future problems, and extensive dental work.
Functional dentistry or not, you should look for a dentist who’s hoping to do the least work possible in correcting problems. Good dental health is all about prevention. An answer that sounds like they hope to do more work sounds to me like someone who may be trying to rip you off.
Q:
What will care in your office cost?
A: Ask for a price list of all standard procedures, including in-network and out-of-network prices. How much will x-rays cost? What if I need a filling? Many offices have a ready-made list they might be willing to email or fax you.
Others may suggest you come in for a face-to-face conversation, to go over any insurance you might have, or special prices for cash-only patients. If you have no dental insurance, this additional legwork is important to make sure you’re not being charged significantly more..
Don’t be afraid to ask about payment plans the dental office may offer, such as CareCredit. Especially for work beyond cleanings, it’s a good idea to have a plan to pay off this kind of work before having it done.
Q:
What work is done ‘in-house’, versus procedures that have to be referred out?
A: There are many functional dentists who do almost no procedures in the office. My personal recommendation would be to strike these practices off your list.
The best answer to this question would be something like: “I handle less invasive procedures in the office. However, if my exam indicates you need more extensive dental treatments or dental surgeries, I can refer you to other specialists I’ve come to know and trust.“
Q:
Where did you receive your degree?
A: All dental schools within the US are accredited, but the if the dentist was educated in a country with different standards and requirements, you might want to do more digging. Even if the school is within the US, look them up online to see what kind of reputation they have.
Q:
How long have you been in practice?
A: Ask this question to discover more about the experience of the dentist. A good dentist will be glad to share info about his/her dental school, years in practice, etc.
But I would also add that finding a new dentist who is only recently out of school doesn’t mean s/he isn’t capable, or that your care would be less than great. You might be talking to a young superstar who will provide amazing dental care and oral health for your and your family members for years to come.
Benefits of an established dentist might be that s/he has plenty of experience with patients, procedures, etc. A newer dentist might be more familiar with cutting-edge dental science.
Q:
How do you approach patients with dental anxiety/fear/phobia?
A: Many practices proudly advertise being great with “wimps.” Ask if they use any kind of gas to calm the nerves during procedures. (Don’t forget to check out the cost of gas; many insurance plans won’t cover it.)
You may also want to find out if they suggest using CBD for dental anxiety or other anxiety relief methods.
Q:
What is your procedure for dental emergencies?
A: Find out about any emergency hours or how a call service is used, what is the normal response time, etc. Some offices make this much easier than others, and it might be important when establishing a patient-dentist relationship.
Q:
Do you participate in a regular course of continuing education? If so, what is it?
A: It may seem like an invasive question, but a confident dentist who keeps his knowledge base up to date and growing will gladly provide an answer.
Q:
What are your office hours? And do those office hours include emergencies, or evening/weekend times?
A: This question may help you know how much the dentist considers the needs of working families. It may not be the major factor in how to find a good dentist, but it’s definitely an important one, especially if all the adults in your family have full-time day jobs.
How to Spot a Bad Dentist
I try to think the best of people, and this includes dentists and other medical professionals. Knowing how gratifying it is to work with a patient and see them implement positive dental health habits, it’s hard to imagine any other way to practice dentistry.
I’ve had a number of opportunities to serve as an expert witness for both the prosecution and the defense in cases where dentists are accused of malpractice. That experience, coupled with my years of service in dentistry, have given me a unique opportunity to see and compare dental offices of all kinds.
Here are several red flags you could encounter as you’re searching for the right dentist for you and your family members:
An unkempt office. Before you ever meet the staff or dentist, you first walk into the office. Pause to take a look around. Surfaces should be shiny and free of dust or smudges. Even older office space, with outdated carpet or furniture styles can be kept nice and tidy for a comfortable atmosphere. And look for a sparkling clean bathroom.
Rude or impatient staff. A good dentist will hire a staff who reflects well on him or her. Considering the trepidation many patients feel about coming to the dentist, a friendly staff go a long way in setting patients at ease before they ever meet the dentist.
A negative response from your child. When looking for a good pediatric dentist to care for children and teens, be sure the kids are present when you go to the office for a consult (once they are old enough to give you clues). Does your child respond well to the staff? Bottom line: The more at peace children are with their dentist, the more likely they are to continue good oral health into adulthood.
Defensiveness about treatment-related questions. In many cases, there are multiple treatment options you can choose from to correct or resolve dental problems. So, ask questions. A bad dentist might tell you there is only one way to approach treatment, and would then seem frustrated or put out for you to suggest some other way. That’s when you know it’s time to find another dentist.
A defensive attitude. No confident, quality dentist will have an issue with a patient asking for copies of dental records for a second opinion. If you feel any negativity or questioning about why you would want to get another dentist’s opinion, consider that another red flag, an indicator that it’s time to move on. (Side note: For a simple second opinion, try JustAnswer.com.)
Multiple, extensive procedures out of the blue. Some dentists will unnecessarily recommend multiple procedures from fillings to root canals to extra whitening services. Be leary of these kinds of pitches. It is unlikely many people would have 12 cavities in the space of a year, or be sent to the chair for 3 root canals in the same time period. Although not impossible, I would say those numbers are high and it’s a good idea to schedule a second opinion before agreeing to anything.
An uncomfortable feeling. Trust your gut! From the moment you enter the office, until the time you head toward the door to leave, you should feel comfortable and welcomed. If at any time this changes, it’s okay to walk away and find another provider.
Key Takeaways: How to Find a Good Dentist
Start by deciding what you want from a dentist. Whether you dread dental visits or have no particular issue with dental procedures, knowing what you’re looking for in a dentist is the springboard to finding the perfect fit for you and your family.
Do some research. Whether you use online resources to find a dentist or word of mouth referrals, form a short list of practices you think might be right for you and your family.
Ask some questions, then ask some more. The better the dentist, the more willing s/he will be to accommodate your inquiries. Whether your needs are simple and routine—checkups and cleanings—or you require more extensive work, the more you can discover up front will pay off in the end.
Lastly, don’t discount the red flags that might pop up, telling you a particular office isn’t good for you. Most of us know when we are being patronized, as well as we know when we’re being welcomed.
A good dental office will do all they can—with a clean, welcoming environment, and a friendly, well-informed staff—to win new patients over. And let’s face it: your teeth deserve the best care you can give them.

backwards-like
ok ok, sorry sorry sorry i’m back. i’m a few weeks behind and watching these episodes for the first time no spoilers.
Previously on Insecure: Living with Daniel was a lick. Daniel wants to make connections at the club. We Got Y’all needs to hire people of color. And Molly switched to a black run law firm.
Looky looky looky. Issa and Daniel are sleeping in bed together, platonically of course. Daniel teases her and at first you think they are still playing platonic, but they soon begin kissing and Daniel goes down on her. There is totally a scene full of Issa Rae's naked pelvis and hard nipples which I have to say is an improvement over her very awkward sex scenes last season. I approve. Idk about the eating Flamin Hots while getting head, but I understand the sentiment being expressed. But then! That was a fake out too, yet another of Issa's frequent fantasies about the person she wishes she could be but is not, like yelling at her coworkers at work or going on dates with her ex who dumped her last season. She got me that time.
Why are they sleeping together platonically? Issa quickly rolls out of bed and leaves before acting on any of the things she's thinking.
Molly is taking her bulldog to the dog groomer. She hasn't started at her new job yet. Issa hasn't had the interview yet for the invitation she had in the last episode but Molly is just happy she will be getting her own place soon. Issa clearly isn't quite ready to leave the safety (not to mention financially beneficial) arrangement she has with Daniel, but isn't being totally honest about that. Her makeup looks fantastic though.
Molly doesn't see what the big deal is since Issa is sleeping on the couch, but Issa's awkward response makes it clear they she and Daniel have started sharing a bed. Like a good friend, Molly knows this isn't a good idea, but Issa defends her poor choices while eating a dog biscuit.
We Got Y'all is participating in like... a non profit fair or something? I really like Frieda in a supervisory role, and it looks like Issa is doing better from the redheaded stepchild position she had been in before.
Meanwhile, Molly is having her first day at her new law firm. Her dress has a confusing belt thing going on but a cute ribbon tie at the neck. She meets all of the staff and I enjoy just the concept of a firm staffed entirely by black people. That's a nice thing to see on TV. And the view isn't bad either.
Can I just say that I actually love LA? I expected to hate it and for it to be full of nothing but bleach blonde fake boobed bimbos. First of all the people were totally normal - far more "normal" "American" people than I was expecting, which is to say... overweight, basically. New York was a lot worse/better - nothing but thin and fit people in really fantastic clothes. I never saw a fat person in New York until I went to Times Square with the tourists. I could totally live in LA and be completely happy with the vibe, it is honestly not that dissimilar to Chicago at all. After visiting a few times I really don't know why people hate LA so much. You know what I hated was San Francisco... a surprisingly ugly city! And before I ever went to California I used to tell people if I were to live anywhere there it would probably be SF. Oof. That's what happens when you speak in ignorance, sis.
Daniel is working on a new track which sounds like a cross between a video game soundtrack and a sad "my life was hard" rap song. He's hoping Spyder will like it, and solicits criticism from his producer friend. I don't know his name, sorry. The producer friend doesn't like basically any of the components of the song and criticizes things he thinks Spyder won't like. I'm not sure if we should trust his opinion more than Daniel's at this point. The caption says that he "strips down" the beat. They both sound like the same sad ass song to me, so idk. But Daniel is clearly uncomfortable with the criticism.
It turns out We Got Y'all is hosting a booth at a job fair, looking for the more black employees Issa suggested. Frieda and her manager haircut are happy with the turnout. For some reason, Dias de La Muerte dancers show up complete with a band and everything and I guess job fairs in LA are more interesting than any I've ever been to... which now that I'm thinking about it is zero...
It turns out this is part of a presentation for another employer that works with musically gifted kids in underrepresented neighborhoods. Issa goes over and talks to the staff there and seems impressed with their shtick. Or maybe impressed with the cutie manning the booth.
Uh oh. At Molly's new firm she's learning the office doesn't use standard tech that she's used to expediting her work with. Instead of DocuSign, they use Adobe and a courier. Yikes. I worked at a nonprofit that still didn't have efax and, why? This is the whole ass future. We wasted so much paper printing and faxing everything manually and they didn't even have the big blue recycling bins, which annoyed me to no end. They are also ok with CPT time on the courier deliveries, which is clearly unacceptable to Molly. Sigh. Why do we do this, you know?
Issa is meeting with the property management company and is being interviewed by an older black guy, which is a good sign. Let me reiterate that her makeup is lovely. It seems like the part time position is more the role of a super than... something Issa would really be interested in. She would also get a discounted apartment - about half off - that the interviewer is readily willing to give to her. He asks if she wants it, and at least she has a good bathroom mirror again with which to comtemplate it.
Later, Issa is tagging along with Daniel at the laundromat, who is complaining that his producer friend took out all the "musicianship" in his track - he wanted the string accompaniment, he wanted the instruments. Daniel is trying to elevate his production with Nordic influences and unique touches. Issa offers gently that when he gets to the next level he can do whatever he want, suggesting nonverbally that he should play the game for now and get creative later.
Issa tells him she picked up the second job, so now she can move out. Daniel points out that three jobs is a lot but Issa, perhaps pressured by Molly and Kelly, is really focused on getting her own place. Daniel tells her he really doesn't mind, and their chemistry is lovely as they flirt and get in each others' faces. They are doing a good job of building the tension because I really just want them to bone already.
Back at Molly's firm, a coworker asks if she wants to take a walk for lunch because she's in a fitbit challenge with her MiL. I am sharing data from my Apple watch with my sister and my niece and biiiitch... being a child is the best. She regularly gets 500+ move points a day while I struggle to reach 400, wtf is this child doing all day? She clearly moves so much more often during a day than I do, lol. No wonder we get fat as we get older. However Molly turns down this invitation - she is used to working through lunch, in case you weren’t picking up on all the signs that the black owned firm does not run as strenuously compared to the white-run environments that Molly is used to. The emphasize the point, the storage room is just randomly inside the building instead of offsite, as Molly would have expected. She clearly is not a good fit for this environment, and honestly she should just acknowledge that.
Girls night. The four girls are at a bar listening to Molly complain about the firm. Issa points out there are Mexican law firms as well, for Molly to complain about. Of course Tiffany, the obnoxious one, agrees that black things are janky. I mean... this is not an argument I want to get into for obvious reasons.
The girls go through examples of supporting and not supporting black businesses - Tiffany loves Beyonce, so although she signed up for Tidal she never goes on it. Kelly has a white accountant even though she herself is an accountant. I feel like this all the time. I feel pressured to give clicks to black articles, lol. I feel guilty for skipping links on Twitter about "black issues." I feel a responsibility to care and show support even about things that I don't fucking actually give a fuck about. Also Issa is wearing a dress that definitely showed up in some pivotal scene last season.
Tiffany hints about the changes from pregnancy - she hates that she can't fit her clothes anymore and she's being excluded from group chats. But the overall point is Molly should give the situation some time and try to adjust. Is Amanda Diva really pregnant IRL? Her pregnancy belly is realistic.
Kelly was helping Issa find an apartment - the best she could do with Issa's credentials is something with a "half bath," which, biiiiitch. So Issa breaks the news that she is, in fact, going to stay with Daniel a little longer. They're not sleeping together and they're getting along so she doesn't see what the problem is. Her friends try to convince her there is a problem, and shit like this scene is why I don't listen to bitches when it comes to my romantic life. Don't need all that extraneous input on what choices to make that are best for ME.
Back at We Got Y'all, Issa and Frieda are interviewing one of the people that showed up at the job fair. For some reason, Issa clearly isn't feeling it - and why is she taking part of this interview in the first place? Is it literally just because they need a black opinion on who to hire? The girl compliments Issa's sweater, perhaps perceiving the bad vibes she's kind of rudely wafting. The candidate asks sincerely what Issa thinks of the job, and Issa answers honestly that "they are how they are." When Issa says she's been there five years and the candidate concludes that Issa must really like it, she blanches with no response. But later, Issa checks out the website for the musical empowerment employer, so maybe she will find the motivation to make a change.
More of Molly's black firm, more of her disdain for the loose standards. This time they call her out, and everyone at the table laughs politely.
Check out Daniel! Despite Spyder's reluctance, apparently they have established a working relationship as Spyder shows up at the studio to meet with Daniel and the other engineer. It turns out a friend of Spyder did get shot at the club the other night. He probably died because when Daniel asks if Spyder is alright, Spyder takes a beat and responds "....nah."
Daniel plays his track for Spyder instead of the pared down version his producer recommended. The producer asks if Spyder wants to hear the other version and Daniel is clearly annoyed at this power move. He does play the producer - Khalil's - version, and Spyder thinks that version is hot as well. At first you aren't sure if Khalil is really being a snake - clearly both versions are good, just for different sensibilities - but then he takes over the session and starts playing more of his own stuff, to Daniel's chagrin.
Issa and Daniel are having dinner... I wanna say at Gladstone's! But that's a totally uneducated guess, lol. Daniel is in a bad mood, but Issa is oblivious. "Is that Jay-Z and Beyonce?" she says; "No, it's us! We cute!" she playfully jokes. This breaks through Daniel's bad mood, and Issa explains she wanted to thank him for his generosity, but she is going to take the part time job and move out. Daniel responds petulantly, and eventually explains the snake move by Khalil in the studio. Surprisingly, Issa takes Khalil's side, saying that Khalil knows what Spyder likes, and Daniel would be squandering this opportunity to be so prideful.
Daniel says he thinks it's funny that Issa is giving *him* career advice and... while maybe that's valid, does Daniel even have a job that pays actual money? Cause I have to say I have not seen any evidence of that over the last three seasons. He throws his "saving you from some shit" actions in her face and Issa is understandably hurt. The dinner is ruined. They still sleep together in the bed that night but they are turned away from each other in terse silence.
Daniel halfway apologizes for taking out his issues with Khalil on her but Issa only dryly replies that it's fine. He turns over and starts spooning and kissing her, which she reluctantly gives into. Toxic. I mean, I get it, but fuck, toxic relationships. It seems redundant to even complain about it because, fuck it, aren't we all toxic sometimes too - it's not always just the other person. This time, he goes down on her for real.
Unfortunately, Issa isn't into it. She says it doesn't feel right, and I don't blame her. They lie next to each other awkwardly and eventually turn away from each other again.
the soundtrack says something something something about loving each other despite their pride and yeah... I get it, lol. I would have got it without the on the nose elaboration.

How To Make The Most Of Your labour hire Melbourne
When you first start looking for labour hire Melbourne, the process can seem daunting. After all, there are a lot of different companies to choose from, and it can be hard to know which one is the best fit for your needs. Not to worry – we're here to help! In this article, we'll talk about the different things you should consider when choosing a labour hire company, as well as the benefits of using one.
What is labour hire?
Labour hire is the process of engaging a third party to provide temporary workers for your business. What is Cultural Fit?
Google defines cultural fit as when the core values, beliefs, and personality of the candidates match those of the company.
However, it is believed that cultural fit is a ‘myth.’ When hiring a candidate, the most important thing to check is his or her knowledge and exposure. A candidate lacking from a western country with expertise in the same domain will fit better in your company rather than a native guy with poor skills.
“Culture fit” as a term is defined as how well someone “fits in” to the organization by hiring managers and firms. Moreover, when you talk about “fitting in,” it is easy to relate that term the same way we think about “fitting in” socially—hence many companies think the best way they can do is hire candidates they can chill around with. This definition of “culture fit” is mostly flawed and can lead to bad hiring practices.
“Culture fit” is just about one thing and one thing that should only matter to you is- how well the individual will do their job within your specific organization. Furthermore, your organization is much more than just happy hours and social gatherings.
However, It is important to make cultural fit checks in the candidature before you hire them and invest your time in them. It is more relevant for the employee and the employer if their values, beliefs and personality match. However, basing your decision wholly on it will be a bad idea. In this piece, we will analyze both sides of the coin and will leave it on you to take a call.
Employee wellness
A positive environment in the workplace helps retaining employees for a more extended period and improves employee self-esteem, which results in high production and decreasing recruitment cost. The healthy environment in the office improves employee’s confidence in employers and creates healthy competition among employees. Well, all of that is possible only if you have a ‘cultural fit’ candidate, and there are no inner conflicts of interest between the employees.
“We have clients that range from 40 people to 70,000 +. They vary wildly between business type, industry, and technology. The one unifying factor is the need for a unified culture. I have seen a lot of unique hiring processes, but companies mainly focus on culture. In the recruiting role I get to speak with dozens of individuals every day and hear about their job search and experiences,” said Andrew Rangel, an IOS developer trainer, who deals with new candidates all the time.
“We specialize in IT recruiting, so skill is very important to the role. We have several individuals that fit the skill set and the job description to the “T”. They were perfect fits for the opportunity. They went through the rigorous three + stages of interviews but were not given offers. Why? They simply were not good fits for the culture. Even though IT is in high demand and currently their unemployment is in the low 4%, companies are still willing to turn down individuals that do not fit the culture,” he added, explaining how sometimes cultural fit can be so important.
False pretention
When the market is largely down, and the country is dealing with a high unemployment rate. It usually happens that the candidates end up faking and making things up, which does not go with their personalities during an interview. However, you think it’s a match based on their views and values they told you about them in a 30 or maybe 40 minutes interview, and you end up believing in that.
Fake pretending ‘cultural fit’ can end up causing extra harm to your organization than you expected from the team of cultural fit employees. It is a fact that employees whose ideologies do not match with what of their employer, usually end up leaving the job, which directly and indirectly affects both the parties. The fewer similarities between employee and employers in what drives them
Monotonous Work life
Diversity at a workplace is essential. People from different backgrounds and age groups bring variety to the work, and each serves a new dish on the table with their diversified perspective. Hiring people with the same mindset, values and work ethics is similar to employing one person, over and over again. This not only brings monotonous rhythm in the work environment but also affect employee engagement. The main problem with hiring for cultural fit is, people tend only to hire people who look and sound alike. Instead, a team should be of differing perspectives but shared values.
Hire and exchange value
No one is born with cultural values. We adapt it from the environment we live in, and we shape ourselves that way. An employer when hiring an employee should be open to change in order to add assets to its team instead of bringing in a ‘cultural fit’ liability. The culture in business changes depending on the need of people in the business at any time — it is not static. Instead of matching candidature to an existing employee, HR should look more closely at the communication style, values, and interests that might contribute to an organization.
Hire based on their academic credentials, professional experiences and references, or maybe technical skillset? Those certainly offer a great starting point rather than ‘cultural fit’.
Slow growth
According to Forbes, focusing on cultural fit leads you to hire in a bunch of candidates who think in a similar way as your existing staff. Reports have proven that once a company goes public, employers that hire on cultural fit actually grow slower than others because they struggle to bring innovative ideas on the table. The company, instead of hiring for people who fit the culture, should rather ask themselves what is missing from their plate, and select people who can bring that in the team. Also cannot ignore the impact on team morale and loss of productivity.
However, one can smartly think about cultural fit when hiring, but that does not mean you should be hiring clones of your current team or one “type” of a candidate. Diversity is necessary, and your culture can include lots of different personality types.
‘Team fit’ not ‘Cultural fit’
The candidate should be a team player. Moreover, when I say team player, it does not mean he should have told you that in his biography, instead of test it by various examine skills. Wether be Start-ups or a Full-grown firm it becomes impossible if you do not work well with the teammates.
Instead of being in trouble by hiring “fit”, companies looking to make more teams with diverse background are better off thinking about “culture add”. What can a person bring to the table that will add to your company culture and help you make a right move in the right direction?
This paves the way for organizations to engage with candidates from diverse backgrounds and demographics and lets them think outside the box when they are building out various teams.
Culture Fit Matter?
Yes, it does matter, but we believe your decision should be partly based on it because you hire someone for working and really not for dating. Now, why is it essential- An employee spends a substantial portion of their lives dedicated to the workplace. If they do not love the work they are doing and the environment, people they are working with, that can quickly spiral into an undesirable work environment.
If you are looking to build, it should be done with intention and your current culture in mind. Otherwise, you might take the risk of a bad investment and hire someone who would be a liability.
Points to keep in mind when hiring ‘Cultural fit’
Hiring someone is a significant investment; make sure you get it right for the first time. Run through rigorous training and test the skills using different tests instead of relying on words.
No hurry! A lousy fit can ruin your current employee morale and team momentum. Make sure you do all the check before letting someone in your company.
Try to talk more about their experiences rather than sticking to formal questions. Make them comfortable so they can talk their heart out.
Explain to them your company work culture, do not hide anything- at the end of the process, you gonna be in the same building you cannot escape.
Look for a counterpart, look for something that is missing in the team. Just like all the spices make a perfect curry, your team needs to be diverse but united when putting together.
Do not hire a clone of your current employee. If you eat the same food daily, you will end up hating that food for the rest of your life. Everyone is different, try new stuff, bring on creativity.
Ensure you have set your values and the candidates meet the maximum of it, if not all.
Ensure to have a solid one to one induction process where the employee can understand the company, instead of sending them to a random table with computer and unknown people around them.
Everyone appreciates a followup- once an employee joins, try taking feedback on how they are settling in.
Feedback just not from the new joinee, but your current team is equally important- their views definitely matters, keep them in a loop like a team.
It is very important to hire candidates you think will be happy working at your organization, and whom your current employees will enjoy working alongside- in the end they are equally responsible for your success. However, it is easier said than done. It seems that a fool-proof approach does not exist- what does exist, is good advice from experienced people in the field. Hopefully, the insights in this article have given you a clarification on whom to hire and what to take care of.

Where Should You Play Poker?
Regularly ignored, this major inquiry must be replied before you can seek after your fantasy about turning into a drawn out effective poker player 188xoso A poker players' choice with regards to where he/she is going to play poker is maybe the most significant choice influencing the players' happiness regarding the game and his/her bankroll. As a rule, a player has four potential settings to look over, they are:
1) Online poker destinations
2) Casinos/Local Poker Rooms
3) Home games with family and companions
4) Local Charity/Fund-raising competitions
Every one of these four scenes has their own interesting 'advantages and disadvantages to be thought of. One setting might be best for Player 'A', however not really a decent decision for Player 'B'. The right setting is comparative with your character, bankroll, and aptitude level.
How about we investigate every one of the four scenes all the more intently, and examine the attributes of each. I will be talking in expansive sweeping statements which are steady any place where you live, yet you ought to acknowledge geology assumes a significant job in scene choice. Betting laws differ starting with one district then onto the next, so please research the laws in your general vicinity and play inside those laws. With that admonition set up, we should look at online poker first.
Online Poker
Beyond question, online pokers' prevalence has detonated lately; to such an extent, the Federal government has put limits on the capacity of US players to move cash to and from the poker locales. These limitations represent a genuine issue for poker players, and a few player affiliations are attempting to battle these limitations. The eventual fate of online poker laws is unsure right now. A full conversation of the legalities of online poker is past the extent of this article, however I urge all poker players to do their examination before you hop into online play.
Aces of Online Poker:
- The best thing about playing poker online is the capacity to play from the solace of your own home whenever you wish. Locales, for example, Poker Stars, Full-Tilt, Ultimate Bet, and so on will actually have countless enthusiastic players online 24 hours per day, 7 days every week. At whatever point you are prepared to play, you will have no issue finding an accessible game.
- Online play permits the player to play a wide assortment of games. On the off chance that you might want to take a break from Texas Hold'em and have the inclination to play Omaha, Stud, Razz, Horse, or for all intents and purposes some other game you can think about, the online locales will oblige you.
- Another advantage to playing on the web is that you can play any stakes you are OK with. In the event that you are preservationist, or simply beginning, you can play for as meager as a couple of pennies a hand. In the event that you are searching for an adrenaline surge, you can play for as much as a few a huge number of dollars. The destinations will offer a wide assortment stakes in the middle of these two boundaries also.
- Finally, in light of the fact that the online locales keep the games moving rapidly, you can improve your game by playing a high volume of hands in a generally brief timeframe. Progressively experienced players may play different games simultaneously. These players are seeing an uncommon number of hands every hour.
Cons of Online Poker:
- Online poker can immediately get addictive. Online poker dependence can have extreme negative ramifications for the players' physical, enthusiastic, proficient, and money related prosperity. A dependent player will frequently begin remaining up the entire evening playing while at the same time disregarding his requirement for rest. This may prompt passionate issues and at last lead to a strain on the players' home and expert life. A player must be watchful to recall poker isn't as significant as family, companions, or your profession away from poker.
- The online player may likewise turn into a casualty of cheating while at the same time playing on the web. The poker destinations attempt to get con artists using complex programming that screens play and searches for anomalies, and I accept they are mostly effective in these endeavors; be that as it may, it can't be denied some cheating goes on without be gotten. The issue for the individual poker player is that he can never be sure he isn't being cheated. The poker world was a buzz a year ago when the media announced the outrage including Ultimate Bet and Absolute Poker. Some cheating happens between the players themselves when at least two players join forces against a clueless player using phone correspondence while the hands are being played out. On the off chance that your rival has more data about the opening cards than you do, you are at a huge burden.
- Because poker is played rapidly on the web, the less capable player will probably lose a greater amount of his bankroll online than if he played somewhere else. In the event that a losing player plays more, he will normally lose progressively as time goes on.
Club Poker
For this conversation, I will consider full assistance gambling clubs (which you are probably going to experience in Las Vegas or Atlantic City) and nearby Poker Rooms (generally found at Kennel Clubs, Horse Racetracks, or other Pari-Mutual offices) to be one in the equivalent. The size and level of complexity might be more noteworthy at a full assistance gambling club, however Poker Rooms have overcome much as of late and can offer comparative administrations to a poker player. Every office gives the tables, chips, sellers, and pit supervisors to oversee play, and each gives an agreeable air to the players to appreciate. In return for offering these types of assistance, the 'house' will rake the pots or charge you an hourly expense to play (more on this later).
Aces of Casino Poker:
- Casinos/Poker Rooms regularly work superbly at offering the player an agreeable domain to play. As increasingly more card rooms spring up, they understand they should seek your business; hence, you are probably going to be dealt with well on the grounds that the club might want you to turn into a customary player at their office.
- A player can be generally sure the games will be controlled by experts. The whole staff from the sellers to drink servers know their employments (and their tips) rely upon giving the players great help.
- Casinos and card rooms are commonly strategically placed inside a network, and they are open at least 12 hours per day seven days per week. Without prior warning, player can take off to the gambling club and hope to discover a lot of activity. Texas Hold'em is ruler at club, yet different games are offered when enough players are accessible to fill a table.
Cons of Casino Poker
- Playing at a gambling club can be a costly encounter. A club has extensive costs, and should recover these costs through a 'rake'. Some card rooms charge an hourly expense to play, say $10-12 every hour for every seat. Others will take a level of each pot, or a level of the all out competition passage charges. A house rake of 10-20% isn't bizarre and must be defeated to be a drawn out champ. A player should likewise be careful that acceptable behavior directs the player should tip the sellers and servers for the administration they give. These tips will add to the expense of playing at a gambling club.
- Another trap to playing at a poker room is that you might be the survivor of a few 'regulars' who collaborate to drench the new fish that takes a seat at their table. Players can impart their possessions through unobtrusive hand signals which puts the clueless player off guard.
Home Poker Games
Consistently in America there are a large number of home poker games in progress among families and companions. Poker requires not many supplies to have a game, and these things are promptly accessible through numerous web destinations. You can begin playing at the kitchen table and inevitably climb to a genuine poker table total with drink holders, cushioned rails, and a felt playing surface. The following thing you will require is a decent instance of poker chips, a 500 tally set of 11.5 gram (or higher) chips will be satisfactory for up to 9 players. The last and most significant thing you requirement for the home poker game is an arrangement (two decks) of 100% plastic playing a game of cards. Hope to contribute between $15-25 for every arrangement for quality cards.
Aces of Home Poker Games
- The one major bit of leeway home poker has over scenes of play is that you can single out the players you play with. Normally, a gathering of 3 or 4 in-your-face players will choose to begin a home game and they will welcome their loved ones to play. This determination procedure almost guarantees a gathering of players that coexist well with one another. Odds of a boisterous or unsavory player being welcome to the game are negligible. The more agreeable the game is, the more you will appreciate playing there.
- A home game cultivates person to person communication which may prompt new expert connections too. You may reach an attorney, bookkeeper, temporary worker, and so forth through poker.
- Home games are extraordinary open doors for married couples, fathers and children, and so on to share some quality time while playing poker.
- Generally, little (assuming any) 'rake' is taken from a home game which implies the cash stays where it has a place, with the players!
Cons of Home Poker Games
- Do not trick yourself, sorting out and facilitating a home game can be a great deal of work. In the event that you are the host, you should be set up to cause calls, to give a spot to stop and play, give the bites and beverages, just as the cleanup afterwords.
- A likely issue with home game poker is that in certain territories, it might be illegal to bet cash while playing. You should investigate and keep the laws in your locale.
- In a most dire outcome imaginable, a contradiction make break out in the game which at last prompts a broke down companionship or hurt sentiments. All the players must be aware of one another and touchy to every others needs.
Noble cause/Fund Raising Poker
- In these fierce monetary occasions, some notable magnanimous associations have gone to facilitating poker competitions to acquire truly necessary assets. Some tuition based schools are in any event, facilitating poker games to enhance their grant reserves. A poker player can

timeline of my spiral for anyone who wants to laugh react
july 2019: hit a wall with sleep deprivation, anemia, gut problems and probably plain burnout, started having conflicts with my boss especially around my lateness (our workday started at 5:00 AM, he refused to simply write me up or suspend me but instead wanted to “talk about it” and this became extremely intrusive and uncomfortable fast)
also july: had my first encounter with an animal in a sticky trap, outside my apartment, a bird who I was able to rescue
also july: quit that job, went back to the golf course to bartend a couple of days a week
august: moved back in with my parents as a result of my changed employment situation
late august: read that shockingly graphic article in the NYT about child porn that some of you may remember (do I need to put a trigger warning or can y’all use common sense and refrain from looking it up). sharp spike in anxiety, making it worse than it had been in six or seven years
september: picked up more hours at the golf course, was able to make some investments in myself -- a new sewing machine and some singing lessons. had my two-year cake.
mid-october: found out I was pregnant. on a friday (K, not J, was the father -- some people do ask). made the quick decision to have an abortion but was unable to get in touch with any abortion provider until the middle of the following week (due to phone/email tag, etc), giving me enough time to start Feeling Things about the pregnancy
november: continuing to live with my parents and work full-time as a bartender, succumbed to angst and anxiety as expected -- but family, friends and coworkers with the glaring exception of my mom (who still pretends she didn’t even know I was pregnant, lol) were very supportive. for a brief period, we settled on keeping the baby, and told my dad and picked godparents. when I changed my mind again, my boyfriend was devastated. that pretty much hasn’t changed
late november: in a last-ditch attempt to fend off the crushing dread, I took a trip north to see a friend and her husband (to be clear, I would have visited them anyway lmfao). it helped a little. on the way back, I stopped to see some of my mother’s cousins, who tried to rope me into a pyramid scheme.
november 28: abortion day! my aunt took me to the clinic and then out for burgers. while we were eating, one of the cooks, who my aunt knew, fell off a ladder and onto his back.
first two weeks following the abortion: the normal feel-like-shit-no-matter-how-secure-you-were-in-your-decision period
dec 3: relapsed!
dec 3 onwards: since the relapse went on for about three months, I can’t nail down when that “two week” period actually ended. pregnancy hormones resulted in waves of anger and teariness, but no satisfying “mourning”. I drank more heavily than I ever did before, routinely got shitfaced or even blacked out while on shift. I told people about the relapse, but the actual inebriation mostly went unnoticed.
christmas eve: after convincing J to come spend christmas with my family, got drunk again, we got in some sort of argument. I don’t remember.
christmas morning: J left as soon as possible.
the blurry period between christmas and mid-January 2020:
more drinking at work, and a peak in the mouse and rat problem my workplace had been managing badly for several months. saw and heard three tiny, dying, bloody mice on two separate sticky traps (two different days). on a slow ~pasta night~, knocked back a couple of drinks so I could ask one of the cooks at the pasta buffet to leave his post and euthanize the second and third mouse. which he did as humanely as possible -- with a shovel. at this point I wrote a letter to my GM telling him how unacceptable it was to make his hormonal, post-abortive employees deal with sentient animals in their dying agonies, and could he please come up with a different pseudo-solution. about a week later, he came up to me and, with great diplomacy and tact, told me to shove it up my ass.
powdered bait laced with rat poison was placed on the floor in and around the bar and kitchen. I called the health inspector, who brought the hammer down on both the poison and the sticky traps. the poison was cleaned up (part of that job went to yours truly, with no protection) as were some but not all of the sticky traps
I developed a small crush on a long-time coworker (cook #1) who began behaving in what I assumed was meant to be a flirtatious way (eye-fucking, going out of his way to talk to me in a way he hadn’t before, etc). this included some pointed questions about my mental health (the abortion and the relapse were public information at this point). bizarrely, he refused to tell me anything personal about himself. he started dating one of the banquet girls. he eventually told a mutual friend (cook #2, and our shovel-killer from above) that he “got [a] vibe” that I “wanted to fuck” but (as cook #2 gleefully reported to me) made a face and expressed disgust at the possibility of ever being involved with me in that way. (WHY ASK ME ABOUT MY FUCKING ABORTION THEN, YOU WEIRDO)
cook #2 started trying to fuck me. I did not reciprocate. he then told me he thought I was a “six” and that he wasn’t interested. a few weeks later he tried to fuck me again
early january 2020: got both a yeast infection and bacterial vaginal infection
january 6: J had a grand mal seizure on my kitchen floor. I had never seen a seizure and the tremors were so severe that my dad, who had seen many, thought he may also have been having a stroke (turned out, just a seizure). he was hospitalized overnight and kicked to the curb -- but the process was begun to get him back into rehab
january 7 (?): employee gift exchange at work. I was on shift and wasn’t participating, but there weren’t a lot of customers and my coworkers asked me to come join them. there were five-gallon buckets of old sangria to which we were given unlimited access (and remember that I was the bartender, so I took the trips to the fridge and back). I blacked out. cook #2 called my mother and I vaguely recall getting in her van.
the days following that “party”: cook #2 and several other coworkers told me I “didn’t seem that drunk,” ie was not a horrible embarrassment. however, cook #2 told me that I’d made out with him. then I started to hear rumours that I and a third cook (cook #3) had disappeared for half an hour to “go have sex”. let me be graphic for a moment: I was wearing a panty-liner that night because the spotting from the abortion hadn’t stopped, I had a yeast infection, and I hadn’t trimmed my pubic hair in about a month -- no matter how drunk I was, I cannot see myself agreeing to take my pants off around a random coworker. someone told me that I had a cheeseburger in my hand when we disappeared and was still eating it when she saw me again so she doesn’t think anything happened -- but I was suspiciously sore the next day. was it the yeast infection or was I sexually assaulted? I don’t know because I was blacked out and I never asked cook #3
january 10: actual staff holiday party. cook #3 introduced me to his long-time girlfriend. we all smiled and shook hands.
mid-january: mac miller’s circles album dropped. I decided I wanted to live. I continued to drink until the end of february, but stayed sober for much longer periods between much shorter binges
late january: I put in my two-weeks’ notice at the golf course and borrow some money from my dad. stinky came to live with us.
february 1: k, stinky and me moved into a small house my parents’ church is renting
most of february: fighting, gossiping, and faction-forming in my AA homegroup, culminated in a member being expelled and a series of “group conscience” meetings which involved yelling, fighting and crying. a relatively new arrival to our group (but a longtimer in the program) started to power-grab, which wouldn’t have fazed me except that she started openly singling me out as a “newcomer” whose vote did not count. this despite other members relapsing in the same period I did, and said power-grabber having been in attendance at my fucking cake five months previous. things got awkward.
mid-february: J went back to rehab
also mid-february: I got pulled over driving drunk in washington state. ironically, the confidence and ease I got from the alcohol kept me from being rude and short with the officer as I usually am, and he told me in a very friendly way that the speed limit would increase by 10 mph a little further down the highway, so perhaps I was confused, and I should take care out there. no ticket. a sign from god?
also mid-february: I got formally assessed for ADHD and tried ritalin for the first time. this did not end up working out.
mid-february: I was invited to dinner by the much older man who does the irrigation on the golf course, through one of the gardeners, a woman a few years younger than me with an established father-daughter type relationship with the irrigation guy. the three of us ate dinner at his house, and she proceeded to pass out from drinking too much. irrigation guy took the opportunity to feel me up.
end of february: I took my last drink and decided to start applying for jobs
also end of february: my ADHD symptoms as well as my anxiety began to spike, throwing a wrench in my resume-writing and hand-shaking plans
march: something else threw a wrench in my hand-shaking plans, as it did with all of yours. it goes without saying that I have been terribly anxious. the upside is that I know for certain that the abortion was the right idea.
also march: I switched to vyvanse and began to see better results.
mid-march, at the very beginning of shut-downs where I live: I see irrigation guy again and he takes the opportunity to pat my ass.
end of march: J relapsed in rehab, was discharged and will see at least a ninety-day delay in his plan to complete the program and then get into secondary housing. he was briefly hospitalized, during which time the doctors did so little for him that he would have literally been just as well off in a drunk tank. service canada lost some of his paperwork so he still doesn’t have his medical EI money.
yesterday: J moved into my shed. he spoke to his counsellor, who will try to get him into a recovery house. I am confident that some things, particularly his EI money, will work out very soon. but whatever happens I have felt a reduction in the second-hand stress. as I said, and now he agrees: it’s a pretty nice shed.
