I never understood why, if Tanaka and Nidai wanted to save everyone they would kill each other. Now you're down two students when it could've been one. There's also heavy implication of a sui icde motive from the starvation plot to the Ogami statue to it being CH 4. I think they took it out because it would be too predictable. And that's fair! But what if....

What if Monokuma didn't tell them that killing Mechamaru would result in execution? So Nidai is in this situation and thinks he needs to save everyone. He's not human anymore. He's felt death. He'd be the best candidate. So he attempts suici de.

but...he can't go through with it. He doesn't want to feel that again. This is where Tanaka comes in to help him. Nidai tells him it's ok because he's not human, and that if he kills him he'll save everyone.

But then Nidai is dead. And Monokuma announces the killer will be executed. So Tanaka, who didn't want to die, panics and attempts to stay quiet.
