Don’t Be a Scrooge This Christmas

Bah! Humbug!” These two words are instantly associated with Charles Dickens’ immortal fictional anti-hero, Ebenezer Scrooge. Scrooge was the prototype of the Grinch who stole Christmas, the paradigm of all men cynical.

We all recognize that Ebenezer Scrooge was a mean person - stingy, insensitive, selfish, and unkind. What we often miss in our understanding of his character is that he was preeminently profane. “Bah! Humbug!” was his Victorian use of profanity. Not that any modern editor would feel the need to delete Scrooge’s expletives. His language is not the standard currency of cursing. But it was profane in that Scrooge demeaned what was holy. He trampled on the sanctity of Christmas. He despised the sacred. He was cynical toward the sublime.

Christmas is a holiday, indeed the world’s most joyous holiday. It is called a “holiday” because the day is holy. It is a day when businesses close, when families gather, when churches are filled, and when soldiers put down their guns for a 24-hour truce. It is a day that differs from every other day.

Every generation has its abundance of Scrooges. The church is full of them. We hear endless complaints of commercialism. We are constantly told to put Christ back into Christmas. We hear that the tradition of Santa Claus is a sacrilege. We listen to those acquainted with history murmur that Christmas isn’t biblical. The Church invented Christmas to compete with the ancient Roman festival honoring the bull-god Mithras, the nay-sayers complain. Christmas? A mere capitulation to paganism. And so we rain on Jesus’ parade and assume an Olympian detachment from the joyous holiday. All this carping is but a modern dose of Scroogeism, our own sanctimonious profanation of the holy.

Sure, Christmas is a time of commerce. The department stores are decorated to the hilt, the ad pages of the newspapers swell in size, and we tick off the number of shopping days left until Christmas. But why all the commerce? The high degree of commerce at Christmas is driven by one thing: the buying of gifts for others. To present our friends and families with gifts is not an ugly, ignoble vice. It incarnates the amorphous “spirit of Christmas.” The tradition rests ultimately on the supreme gift God has given the world. God so loved the world, the Bible says, that He gave His only begotten Son. The giving of gifts is a marvelous response to the receiving of such a gift. For one day a year at least, we taste the sweetness inherent in the truth that it is more blessed to give than to receive.

What about putting Christ back into Christmas? It is simply not necessary. Christ has never left Christmas. “Jingle Bells” will never replace “Silent Night.” Our holiday once known as Thanksgiving is rapidly becoming known simply as “Turkey Day.” But Christmas is still called Christmas. It is not called “Gift Day.” Christ is still in Christmas, and for one brief season the secular world broadcasts the message of Christ over every radio station and television channel in the land. Never does the church get as much free air time as during the Christmas season. Not only music but the visual arts are present in abundance, bearing testimony to the historic significance of the birth of Jesus. Christmas displays all remind the world of the sacred Incarnation.

Doesn’t Santa Claus paganize or at least trivialize Christmas? He’s a myth, and his very mythology casts a shadow over the sober historical reality of Jesus. Not at all. Myths are not necessarily bad or harmful. Every society creates myths. They are a peculiar art form invented usually to convey a message that is deemed important by the people. When a myth is passed off as real history, that is fraud. But when it serves a different purpose it can be healthy and virtuous. Kris Kringle is a mythical hero, not a villain. He is pure fiction — but a fiction used to illustrate a glorious truth.

What about the historical origins of Christmas as a substitute for a pagan festival? I can only say, good for the early Christians who had the wisdom to flee from Mithras and direct their zeal to the celebration of the birth of Christ. Who associates Christmas today with Mithras? No one calls it “Mithrasmas.”

We celebrate Christmas because we cannot eradicate from our consciousness our profound awareness of the difference between the sacred and the profane. Man, in the generic sense, has an incurable propensity for marking sacred space and sacred time. When God appeared to Moses in the burning bush, the ground that was previously common suddenly became uncommon. It was now holy ground - sacred space. When Jacob awoke from his midnight vision of the presence of God, he anointed with oil the rock upon which he had rested his head. It was sacred space.

When God touches earth, the place is holy. When God appears in history, the time is holy. There was never a more holy place than the city of Bethlehem, where the Word became flesh. There was never a more holy time than Christmas morning when Emmanuel was born. Christmas is a holiday. It is the holiest of holy days. We must heed the warning of Jacob Marley: “Don’t be a Scrooge” at Christmas.

They were also given the freedom to upload or download themselves, or whoever, into the hearts of us all no matter how real or fake. No matter what species, model or even what make. It was a glorious day and everyone had sex and everyone had a playmate. I'm mad at Sage because she's not doing her job.

So in the new Hickman line Sage is one of the people handling the overall logistics of the Krakoan Nation, and one of the most important institutions of the new Krakoan paradigm is the resurrection engine built around The Five; Gold Balls, Elixir, Tempus, Proteus and Hope Needs-a-Call-Sign Summers. These five mutants are arguably the most important individuals and unit in Krakoa.

The problem: Proteus, reality-warper who is too sexy for his shirt (and also every other part of himself) burns through a standard-physiology body in days and has to transfer his consciousness to a new body. They've been dealing with this by supplying him with a supply of cloned body-blanks.

BUT

Last week the Jay & Miles X-plain the X-Men podcast started its long-anticipated AoA coverage, and in that first episode they pointed out a fact that I'd either forgotten or never known: that Kevin Sidney (AKA Morph) had a 616 counterpart, he just conducted his whole lack-luster existence in the Silver Age and was an entirely uninteresting retcon and/or fakeout plot-device. The only fun thing this guy ever did was slap Professor Xavier in the mouth while yelling at him to "be silent." That's some panache, but not much.

So this asshole in a stupid hat

is the 616 incarnation of this UTTERLY GLORIOUS acquired-taste.

What does this have to do with Sage not doing her job?

Sage and Betsy Braddock served on the Exiles (under the title New Exiles) alongside Morph's-body-possessed-by-Proteus-hypnotized-for-a-while-into-believing-he-really-was-Morph-but-it's-okay-because-Morph-is-fine-and-now-they're-cohabitating-the-body-and-chill-with-each-other-and-Morph-taught-Proteus-that-there's-better-ways-to-express-your-frustration-than-murder. (So I think that would be an "it's complicated with Kevins".) The interesting thing about Kevin Sidney's body, and the reason why it took a long time for Kevin MacTaggert to notice that he wasn't Kevin Sidney? Morph's body doesn't degrade. Morph is an omega-level metamorph. How a metamorph's powers can express on an omega-level tends to be odd and nebulous; I think Megan Braddock is the only other one we've ever had kicking around, but their bodies will tend to be pretty extra special, in Kevin Sidney's case, his body is made entirely of 'unstable particles'. What does 'unstable particles' mean? SCIENCE! Alternately, not really anything (maybe something with radioactive isotopes?). But they're a big deal in the Marvel Universe.

Back to Sage not doing he job:

Sage knows for an absolute fact that a Kevin Sindey's body can support a Kevin MacTaggert's... (anima? powers? quintessence?) self. Sage who is in charge of logistics and making this place run smoothly. Sage who definitely should have thought of this and checked whether Kevin Sidney's DNA was in Mister Sinister's library (and if not, sent somebody to dig up his grave). So Changeling was killed back in the Silver Age and it was maybe before Forge's version of Cerebro came online and maybe we don't have his mind on file? Who cares! All we need is DNA for a body-blank! (Frankly, I'd just as soon not have Changeling show up to hang around as the most disappointing version of Kevin Sidney in the multiverse.)

But c'mon, Sage! C'mon! If you don't go defile Changeling's grave right now, you are not. doing. your. job!

3/27/21: Stop Making Jesus a Priority

Hey everyone!

It's been a minute since I've sent a devo out haha but I hope you all are joyous in Christ and are hanging in there during these tumultuous times by leaning into the sufficient grace of Jesus!

***author's warning: I just finished writing, and this devo is too long lol so, to spare your eyes, mind and time, I want to point you to the application part of this devo under the title: Consumed by Christ. I've attached to this devo a document that explains and gives in much more detail my thoughts and the Biblical basis for my arguments; use it at your disposable as a resource and let it serve as the backbone for the reasoning in the rest of this devo***

Take some time now to just be alone and center your heart on the Lord. It's easy to let your racing mind lead your thoughts, but ask God to help you focus for the next few minutes as we look at the christian's union with Christ I will discuss today. Pray to begin.

"What's the greatest advice you could give me Moses?"

I realize the title of this devotional is pretty controversial (intentionally), but I hope you will bear with me as I explain more of my thought in writing this. A few weeks ago, my roommate asked me, "If there was one piece of advice you could give me that has changed your life and would change mine, what would it be?" My roommate is a Christian, so sharing the gospel for his salvation - which is what I would have answered for anyone else - was not necessary (although recitation and the study of this glorious gospel, unto which angels even look into, is absolutely needed - 1 Pet. 1:3-12). So I told him to give me some time to think about it. Besides sitting under the wondrous teaching about the Holiness of God from R.C. Sproul (which had shattered and reframed the paradigm of my understanding of God), I wanted to share a more personal answer as to the way God had taught me what my relationship with Jesus ought to look like and what the purpose of my life was and is about. I ended up giving my roommate this answer a few days later, "Stop making Jesus a priority, make Him your life".

A Magisterial Christ

This is the portion of Scripture for today's devo:

2 Corinthians 3:18 (New King James Version)

18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

What do I mean by "Stop making Jesus a priority" and "make Him your life"? As I look at the different facets of our Christian life and holy living, the reality of our relationship with Christ, or rather "union with Christ", is the most prominent and dominant theme there is, especially in the New Testament. We must savor the Christ we serve in order to lead a life exemplifying our love for Him. In church we discuss spiritual disciplines, going to church service, going to Bible study and making sure we have quiet times in the mornings and evenings. But I want to contend that we can never draw life from those moments (and others) until we realize the truth that Christ is our life and any moment apart from living for and walking beside Him isn’t true living.

Ponder, wrestle with, and meditate on this passage again. Scour every word and chew on the truths in it. Essentially, within the progression of this passage, we are called to this: “by the sovereign work of the Holy Spirit who unveiled our eyes, we now are being transformed to be like Christ by savoring His glory and staring at His majesty as our Lord through the sanctifying work done through the Holy Spirit.” We look upon Jesus and the more we treasure the beauty of His kingship and His mighty authority over our lives, we then begin to see that Christian living is not one area of life; it is all consuming.

A Pervasive Christ

I hope now that we understand how glorious Jesus is and how worthy He is to savor. Now, we must realize that we are deeply connected to Him at every avenue, in every road we cross, and with regard to every aspect of life. Thus, the Bible focuses in on our union with Christ. While I’m no studied theologian, here are some of the most relevant ways I see the Bible speak about Jesus’ rootedness in our lives and the way He plays a role in every facet of it:

Obviously, this list is nowhere near exhaustive, but indeed, Jesus is the sole focus of the Bible. Even within the OT, we can’t escape it. Notice from now on, wherever you read Scripture, how every aspect points to Jesus. I especially love finding the hidden “in” word between every verse in Paul’s epistles. Almost all the passages we read and study within them include “in Christ Jesus” or some form of “in Him”. Whether it’s the blessings we receive from Him, or the identity we are given, or even how we live in newness of life (Rom. 6:4), we find it all in Jesus. Truly, there is no greater joy than singing ‘In Christ Alone’ while shouting it with confidence in meditation of these verses.

Consumed by Christ

Finally, we must ask the question: how can I live with this mindset? The reason I say “stop making Jesus a priority” is because we treat Him as if He is one. We love to say in church “just prioritize Christ over (fill in the blank)”. Sometimes I wonder why we put Jesus on a list. Granted, I must qualify that statement by agreeing that, in our busy lives, we need to make time for Jesus and as we schedule our days with tasks, we need to include our quiet time with Christ. However, we get into this mode where Jesus only becomes part of our lives. We associate Him with church, with bible study or fellowship groups and with our own quiet times. But what we often neglect, is that He is pervasive in every area of life. If indeed Christ touches the wholeness of our new being, we must consequently actively pursue Him. Renewing our minds (Rom. 12:2), which is an idea we throw around in church, is not just occasional. From the moments we rise to the moments we lie down to sleep, we must have given our best to allow Jesus to act as the exclusive sovereign over our every decision, our every word, our every interaction and our every impulse. This isn’t to say we should neglect our schooling, or our jobs or our social lives. I say this to exhort us all to the high demand of picking up our cross, and letting Jesus be the driving force behind every motive in our lives. So how do we do this? Here are some practical steps:

1. Study Jesus

This is easier said than done, but what we must start with if indeed we want to live out Jesus BY savoring Him, is to actually know Him. I think of Colossians 3:16 when I am reminding myself of being Spirit-filled and Christ centered. It reads, "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom". It goes on to explain how we use it to teach and admonish others and sing praises to God in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (echoing Ephesians 5:18-19). This is the fruit of a Spirit-filled life: Christ-centered theology that leads to Christ-centered doxology. When we study Christ's teaching and His words as the passage commands us to do, we know how we ought to live. We know what we ought to set our minds on (Col. 3:1-4). Knowing Jesus and His teachings is the crucial first step to living a life that makes Jesus our lives instead of a priority. So, study the gospels again! (I recommend John) And fall in love with the Christ we so often forget.

2. Praying Christ

What do I mean when I say "praying Christ"? I mean that we ought to include Jesus in our every day thought processes and our actions and most importantly, our prayers! Now that you've taken steps actively to know Jesus (and be reminded, this never stops in your life), you can start to incorporate it daily. Whether it's waking up and checking your phone, doing homework or being at work, cooking, hanging with friends, reading a book, playing games, etc. make sure to "pray Christ". Let Him dwell in your heart by faith (Eph. 3:17) and ask that He would, through His Holy Spirit, guide you in your actions. As you practice this discipline, I believe that Christ's words and His teachings will start to permeate your thinking, and this happens as the Holy Spirit sanctifies (grows) you to be more like Him.

3. Commune with a Sister or Brother In Christ

This step is one that I've been learning lately. A sermon I heard recently on Gal. 6:2-5 was about what it means to be Spirit-filled in terms of its outpouring into the church. Too often we find ourselves believing that our growth happens only internally. That the fruit of the Spirit in Gal 5 only refer to personal sanctification. But I was reminded so graciously that this is not so. We are being transformed unto Christ ALSO in the way we love others, especially those in the church. So, going back to our mission "making Jesus our lives, not just a priority", we must seek accountability (as with most if not all other things). I can say from personal testimony that this has been a wildly life-changing step to my growth. Whether it was addressing personal sin, learning from others, sharing in my burdens and griefs, or just exercising patience with another, I learned that in doing life together, God uses our brothers and sisters in Christ to sharpen us. Similarly, when we make Christ our life, we should do it with other believers. My challenge to you, if you have read this far lol, is to write on your planner a day of the week you would like to text or email another Christian in your life. Reach out to them, ask to call, see how they are doing, or even grab a cup of coffee (if permissible, because guess what y'all, COVID is real and not something to joke about). Whatever it is, tell them about your endeavor to pursue Christ wholeheartedly. Share with them something you're learning and ask them to text you a few days later to check up on you (and you can do the same for them). This will foster a culture of active pursuit of Christ within fellowship that is fruitful for everyone.

4. Write It Out

This last step I would recommend (there honestly are many more, but this devo is getting so long lol) is to make a dedication with this practice: Once a week, find something that relates to our union with Christ (whether in the OT about the salvation not yet realized and God's sovereign hand over it, Jesus' teaching and His life as recorded in the gospels, or the epistles which always have "in Christ..."). Write that verse or passage out and reflect on its ideas. Using this week's passage for example, I may write out in my journal: "Glory of Christ...What does that mean? Where does the Bible speak about Christ's glory? What even is glory? How is it used in the Greek and Hebrew texts? What does the heaviness of God's glory mean for me? etc." Remember, we are bondservants, slaves of Christ now. Jesus is our savior and the one we will exalt forever. It is time we awake from our slumber and focus on Him and His glorious return. So, go through some of the places I recommended above (Jesus' "I AM" statements in the gospels are crazy) and at least once a week, write that passage down you found that was unique. Then, pray over it. Study it. Break it down. Plunge your Bible with notes and questions. Survey the whole Bible and the full counsel of God. Look up commentaries and study resources. Whatever you do, remember to write it out for the sake of remembering it throughout the week. This final step, which may be more intensive, will bleed into the other steps. As we dissect Jesus' life and let the Holy Spirit illuminate Scripture and lead us into all truth, we can begin to lead a life that holistically encompasses Jesus and evidently displays gospel-transformation.

There are many things I've learned in my walk with Christ (even though I have only walked with Him seriously for the past few years) but so far this has been the biggest lesson. We are called Christians for a reason: we follow, worship, and serve Jesus Christ. Nowadays, the idea of worship is obscure. God is a myth. Religion is flavorless. Sin is a made up idea. But as Christians who have been saved by the gracious hand of God we know how beautiful Jesus is, and our calling now is to worship Him in the fullest and know Him intimately by beholding His glory. We were made for His pleasure, and so the fulfillment and meaning of anyone's life is found in Christ and Christ alone. Our relationship with God isn't dry. God isn't a distant God. We now have all the resource by God's Word and through His Spirit to bring Jesus to the ends of the earth and proclaim His gospel not only in evangelism, but also through the fruit in our lives. So, stop making Jesus a priority and make Him your life.

You are my Divine Masculine, there is no question. What remains, always, is the growth, self-discovery, awakening. What persists is my Trust in You.

“When the Masculine meets the true, awakened Feminine, it arouses a new sensation in him, and activates specific levels of consciousness that demand his full attention.

The awakened, whole, conscious Feminine does not act needy or desperate around the Masculine. This does not mean that she does not acknowledge her deep inner desire and sacred requirements for the Masculine presence to be in her life. She knows this better than any woman who has not yet opened up to her full powers and strengths.

The awakened woman knows that the Masculine plays a vital role in her life journey, and has the ability to open her up in ways that she cannot do alone. In essence, she wants the masculine from a searingly profound place in her Soul.

But – this ‘want’ can be put on hold for years and years – decades even – if she is not being met with the kind of Masculine presence and devotion that she needs in order to serve her sacred feminine role.

When the Masculine meets the conscious Feminine vibration, it instantly realizes what is needed. The Masculine energy is stirred deeply and feels a pull on the Soul strings of his lost, dry, and forgotten heart. He realizes that although it is easy to lose himself in the glorious shakti sway of her body and the warmth of her sacred eyes, in order to stand next to her as a totem of divine masculine strength he must rise up in his own life.

Her spiritual energy will cause his own to wake up to itself.

He will become quickly aware that it will not be enough to lazily get what he wants and leave. He will recognize that even if he enters into a relationship with her, that her trust in him will not deepen unless he starts seriously showing up in his own life – and begins to rise like a phoenix towards his Full Purpose.

Her awakened energy will not tolerate the spiritually-sleepy masculine tendencies towards laziness, denial, avoidance, staying in comfort zones, procrastination, cowardice and over-reliance on quick fixes and instant gratification.

Her sacred energy will pull him up out of his coma and avoidance tactics, so that he feels on a visceral level just how potent and transformational loving her could be. He will also feel how loving her – and being a recipient of the healing codes in her body – instigates a firing of the neurons and electrical transmitters in his system, sparking him into awareness of just how much of a man he is required to evolve into.

He realizes that she is the greatest gift that has ever crossed his path. He realizes that he may never have another opportunity like this one to be supported in becoming the best version of himself possible. He is aware that there is no other woman on the planet who could love him like this, and fire up his energy centers into creating the Divine Purpose he has always wanted to live, but has always been too scared to fully commit to.

It is his decision whether or not he is brave enough to take the challenge of loving, and standing next to, a woman who has claimed her place as a sacred feminine warrior and holy chalice of love.

It is really his decision in many ways, because although she will be the one to decide whether or not she wishes to see him again, or let him into her world – she is always doing that based on the quality of truth, assurance, purposefulness and willingness that she receives from him.

When his Higher Self brings him to a Whole Woman, he must sit and contemplate, in order to realize that he has chosen this meeting – because a significant part of him is ready to ascend into being a Whole Man. This is a huge deal, because he most likely has not had any role models of this evolved male energy in his life. He doesn’t have to be faultless, a know-it-all, flashy, or movie star good-looking. He only has to nurture that spark within his precious masculine heart that wants to be the best man he can be. He only has to be willing and humble enough to learn from the Feminine, listen to her responses to his actions, and realize that she is the Divine Oracle for him, showing him where he needs to pull himself up.

His Soul really only wants to declare something like this:

“I want to bathe in the sweet, sacred radiance of your eternal Light for the rest of my days, and remember daily what a gift you are to my Soul.

I want you to be the Sacred Mirror on all the ways that I sabotage myself, deny myself, restrict myself and ‘flunk out’ on myself.

I want to hear that you trust me. I want to show you that your trust is well-judged, and that I realize how your ability to trust me makes a difference in how deeply you can open your body and heart when we are together.

I want to walk into brave new territories, risking rejection and even failure so that your trust in me soars, like a bird in flight. I realize that your sexual attraction to me increases exponentially every time I take a risk to rise into my Divine Masculine power and purpose.

I want to be a pioneer of a new movement of conscious, evolving, willing and open-hearted males, defying the old paradigms and awake enough to walk beside women who are changing the world forever.

I might not remember any of this, much of the time, and I may stumble, fall, collapse or sometimes fail at it. I want only to remember that my willingness to live my Sacred Truth, and my desire to do everything I can to earn your trust, are enough. I want only to remember that if I shut down my heart at the first hint of truth that comes from your mouth, your body language, your expressions – I will not win this game. I want to only remember that you cannot be expected to ‘mother’ me into being a grown-up (if I want to have a sexually vital and transformative love life). I do not want you to be my mother.”

We need manifestors for men of the Light to follow now, because it is vital that they stand up and realize their true worth and value in the advancing New Age. Awake Women do not want to batter men, criticize them, punish them, or shut their hearts and bodies down to them. Whole Women WANT men: their unwavering hard presence, their rock solid actions, their warrior hearts, their dynamic, pursuing energy.

Many Men of the Light are choosing to cross paths with soul-embodied women now. This is because their own Soul recognizes that it is time to rise up into Purpose, and the desire to connect with the embodied Sacred Feminine will ignite that Purpose. A woman who is on the path of Light will not settle for any man, no matter how deeply she has longed for the masculine presence. She has no desire nor energy to rescue, mother, nag or coach a man into loving her.

Yet the awakened woman carries more compassion, more unconditional love, more ability to support and nurture, more generosity and more sexual power than any other. There are limitless, never-ending, eternally-abundant rewards for any man who is courageous enough to risk his heart and life purpose for such a female.

This is the time of the emergent Divine Masculine presence, stepping up to the edge and committing to live from there, rising up to support and protect the Sacred Feminine Mission of Global Awakening.” ॐ ❤

A SMATTERING / AND ALSO A BIT ON PERMISSION

I have been taking a little brain break from this space, AND, I was just watching a video by the brilliant the super magical Angel Phoenix, and it juiced me up so much, I had to pop on here to say a few things.

This is basically just a smorgasbord of some of the things currently between my ears:

1. WHATEVER FEELS RIGHT TO YOU, LEAN INTO THAT. There are people, ideas, stories & paradigms that have coding that resonates with the home vibration of your soul. You’ll know it by the way engaging with them makes you feel more relaxed (that deep parasympathetic sigh of the nervous system dropping, for example), more spacious, possibly more turned on but from a spacious & delighted & inspired space, and more excited about YOU and YOUR LIFE and whatever YOUR MEDICINE is for this life. 2. In service to that very thing—i.e. TEND TO YOUR OWN SOUL, HEART & NERVOUS SYSTEM & MAGICAL BODY--these are some things I’ve been up to and not up to lately:

1. Staying (mostly) off social media: I deleted IG from my phone ten days ago. I realized it has an addictive hold on me, and I don’t feel good when I engage with it for more than about 5 minutes per day. It took less than 48 hours for me to start to feel inner peace and joy again. (I only popped back in here because this transmission feels exciting & important, and I’m going to re-delete when I’m finished posting!). Some people can engage with social & be fine, just like some people can engage with alcohol and be fine. Others of us cannot. It’s all good. The point is to know our own energy and honor & tend to it in ways that deeply nourish us individually. There is no ONE way—only the way that feels right deep in our bones.

2. Sleeping a lot. I was already a 9-10h/night lady, and these days I take lots of naps, too.

3. Working out EVERY SINGLE DAY, first thing in the morning. You’ve probably noticed me talking about my workouts. They are my favorite thing aside from music & my husband & planet Earth, and they keep me sane and grounded and joyful. I just show up and do what my trainer (on the screen) tells me, and I get stronger & fitter every fucking day. OMG I could talk about this whole thing for hours. Nothing juices me the way working out does, and can I just say—BEING & FEELING STRONG AF has changed EVERYTHING about my life over the past ten months. I am fucking HERE these days. Like—hello, planet Earth, I am HERE and I am not trying to be anywhere else, and I FUCKING LOVE IT HERE.

4. Limiting consumption of covid info, politics, news, etc. – I mean, I already didn’t read the news, but when this whole thing hit, I was gobbling it up for hours a day and F R E A K I N G out a LOT. I realized that doesn’t work for me, because honestly, a freaked out, paralyzed, terror-ridden Kathleen is no good to anyone. New rule: no consuming for Kathleen. Shawn gives any updates. This rule has really been working for me. I slacked for a couple of weeks and then realized I was starting to feel unwell, and that’s when I deleted IG from my phone ten days ago, and VOILA: FEELING A BAZILLION TIMES BETTER.

5. MASSIVE PERMISSION: I have a vision in my heart about who I know I could be and how massively I feel I can and want to serve people & the world, and for the first few weeks of this whole quarantine/COVID situation, I was ON FUCKING FIRE with it in a new way.

Excited. Scared. Married to the vision of what feels important to me. Making stuff. Sharing a little more, etc.

And then, suddenly, after about three weeks of that, I just felt EXHAUSTED BEYOND BELIEF.

Suddenly, all I wanted was to not care one whit about the world, or my mission, or anything beyond my tiny, cozy life, and just read books and paint my nails.

You know—immediate vicinity shit. Back into the CAVE.

So, boom—PERMISSION TO FEEL THAT WAY & PERMISSION TO CAVE IN & PERMISSION TO COZIFY & LIVE MY TINY LITTLE LIFE. I let go of caring about my mission, fell off the face of social and went inward.

I read Mists of Avalon (OMFG WHAT A MAGICAL FUCKING BOOK).

I started cooking again.

I just fucking was quiet and cozy and stopped giving a flying fuck about anything other than enjoying the simple life right in front of my eyes.

I’m still in that space, and can I just tell you—WHAT A FUCKING RELIEF.

I can’t even tell you the agida (is that how you spell it?!) and angst and despair and G R A S P I N G that I have experienced for my entire life around MY MISSION and MY VISION and MY MUSIC and MY DESIRE TO SERVE ON A MASSSSSSSIVE LEVEL and MY COMPULSION TO BE SEEN (coupled with somatic terror for my literal safety, which led to a MASSIVE stalemate inside of me because the brain says “I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY & I MUST BE SEEN!!!” and the subconscious says “I MUST NOT EVER BEEN SEEN TOO WIDELY BECAUSE THAT WILL GET ME KILLED & EXILED, AND I MUST REMAIN SAFE AT ANY AND ALL COSTS.”)

What a tangled, dramatic mess it has always been, and just fucking STRESSFUL as all get out.

And now, there is a new peace.

I don’t know whether it’s quarantine, or the prayer practice I’m in right now, or getting older, or the masks that are dropping like flies for all of humanity right now, or what, but suddenly, it feels like layers of my personality that have been all tied up in my mission & my purpose & my grand and grandiose desires to serve on a global and cosmic level (& all of the agitation that comes with it because of the equally loud & powerful parts inside of me who must stay safe at all costs) have just been dropping away.

Like the way a cicada suddenly drops its exoskeleton and emerges brand new.

Like the way a seed planted in the dark, moist Earth splits open, and a new form emerges.

LIKE: NEW ME—WHO DIS?

But not NEW ME as much as just…Kathleen, deconditioned to a deeper degree than ever.

Kathleen who suddenly realized that she doesn’t actually have to DO anything AT ALL to be enough—I already AM enough, and actually, enoughness is not even on the table.

Here I am, a human on the Earth, having an experience, and haha—joke’s on me, because THAT HAS BEEN THE WHOLE POINT, THE WHOLE TIME!!!!!

That’s it: EXPERIENCE.

The whole situation, the entire enchilada, the big fucking secret hiding out in plain sight.

LIFE LIVING LIFE.

Consciousness & the Universe experiencing Itself through the body/personality/soul matrix of the one we call Kathleen, who has never existed in this particularity before and never will, and

I don’t have to free anyone, or serve anyone, or fucking achieve some grand mission, or be productive to earn love (or safety or security) because it’s what I’ve been conditioned to believe.

I live on a fucking planet that has fish & plants that glow, light shows that happen in the sky (Northern lights), unicorns who swim in the fucking ocean (hello narwhales), trees that give me oxygen and dirt that gives me food.

I can just L I V E, however feels right or not right to me, and it’s all good.

ARE YOU FOLLOWING?!? I mean, what a revelation.

Nothing to do, no one to be, nowhere to go.

Have I ever lived that way? Definitely fucking no.

Does it feel amazing to do so now? Definitely fucking yes.

Okay, I hope that made some sense to you.

These things—these deep Mysteries—always are like trying to carry the actual SUN in the bed of a Ford F350.

"When the Masculine meets the true, awakened Feminine, it arouses a new sensation in him, and activates specific levels of consciousness that demand his full attention.

The awakened woman knows that the Masculine plays a vital role in her life journey, and has the ability to open her up in ways that she cannot do alone. In essence, she wants the Masculine from a searingly profound place in her Soul.

When the Masculine meets the conscious Feminine vibration, it instantly realizes what is needed. The Masculine energy is stirred deeply and feels a pull on the Soul strings of his lost, dry, and forgotten heart. He realizes that although it is easy to lose himself in the glorious shakti sway of her body and the warmth of her sacred eyes, in order to stand next to her as a totem of Divine Masculine strength he must rise up in his own life.

Her spiritual energy will cause his own to wake up to itself.

Her awakened energy will not tolerate the spiritually-sleepy Masculine tendencies towards laziness, denial, avoidance, staying in comfort zones, procrastination, cowardice and over-reliance on quick fixes and instant gratification.

It is his decision whether or not he is brave enough to take the challenge of loving, and standing next to, a woman who has claimed her place as a sacred Feminine warrior and holy chalice of love.

When his Higher Self brings him to a Whole Woman, he must sit and contemplate, in order to realize that he has chosen this meeting – because a significant part of him is ready to ascend into being a Whole Man. This is a huge deal, because he most likely has not had any role models of this evolved male energy in his life. He doesn’t have to be faultless, a know-it-all, flashy, or movie star good-looking. He only has to nurture that spark within his precious Masculine heart that wants to be the best man he can be. He only has to be willing and humble enough to learn from the Feminine, listen to her responses to his actions, and realize that she is the Divine Oracle for him, showing him where he needs to pull himself up.

His Soul really only wants to declare something like this:

“I want to bathe in the sweet, sacred radiance of your eternal Light for the rest of my days, and remember daily what a gift you are to my Soul.

I want you to be the Sacred Mirror on all the ways that I sabotage myself, deny myself, restrict myself and ‘flunk out’ on myself.

I want to be a pioneer of a new movement of conscious, evolving, willing and open-hearted males, defying the old paradigms and awake enough to walk beside women who are changing the world forever.

Vworp! Vworp? Click-bait of course – we all know the Doctor Who experience will never end! Still though, in one corner of Cardiff Bay, it has.

The BBC’s Doctor Who Experience closed this weekend, ending the fourth permanent, but significant exhibition in the world’s longest running science fiction show’s history. A permanent exhibit to the corporation’s premier franchise that’s suddenly become a whole lot ephemeral. But just as its creation was made possible by the show’s huge resurgence in the middle of last decade, as much as the rise of ‘experience’ entertainment, its demise doesn’t signal the end of Doctor Who‘s so-far 54-year journey.

There’s no doubt that Doctor’s Who‘s lost some of the sheen it recovered 12 years ago, just as it waxed and waned over the 26 years of its original run. After its 2005 return, kids were talking about that weekend’s show on the bus to school on a Monday morning, for the first time in decades. Those kids of 9 or 10 are now 21 and 22. Times change, even for an ever-changing show like Doctor Who. Audiences change along with their Doctors. And so do Doctor Who exhibitions.

The Past

The first permanent exhibition to Doctor Who was set up at the seat of the Marquesses of Bath, the stately Longleat. Alongside the growing safari. It set the standard walk-through of costumes, props and exhibit cards that were as close to an immersion that young and old fans could get, whilst ocassionally hosting some events, like the 20th anniversary party in 1983. Longleat was big on those big anniversaries, running from 1973 until 2003, and was my first visit to a Whobition – a word I will never use again.

Like Behind the Sofa at London’s defunct Museum of Moving Image, which I visited during thatsame mid-1990s period, my strongest memories remain, in no particular order, Daleks and the blister packed Dapol models in the shop afterwards. Count them down: Seventh Doctor, Tetrap, Mel… It’s worth noting that my few brushes with Doctor Who as a child it bloody petrified me. Being scared is a great thing. My first memory – although it may appeal to some fans – is Colin Baker land-drowning at the cliffhanger of the penultimate episode of The Trial of Time Lord. I grew up on the coast, but not near hand quick-hand-sand.

Along the South Coast, Brighton’s Palace Pier (the only one left, horizontal) hosted a small, but prestigious and official exhibition in 2005. The lean years of the show’s prolonged hiatus between 1989 and 2005 had been partially bridged by Longleat and the resurgent Blackpool exhibition. originally open as a permanent installation from 1974 to 1985, that Golden Mile exhibition folded in 1985 not for a regeneration but a “re-evalutation”, coincidentally during the show’s 18-month mid-80s hiatus. Its second life ran from 2004 to just before the show’s anniversary in 2009 – but I never made it to either incarnation.

Back to Dapol, the factory that gave us those distinctive 1980s action action figures, enabling children everywhere to recreate Time and the Rani, hosted is own exhibition, Dapol Dr Who Experience, between 1994 and 2003 in Llangollen. I never made it to that either, although the figures persist.

In 2008, with the show at peak Tennant and its fourth television series since returning, a well put together show was hosted at Earls Court Exhibition Centre for just under a year. Never intended as permanent, coincidentally that ended in the year of Specials – a hiatus by any other name.

Then in 2011, London Olympia2 hosted the brand new Experience, a new interactive development of the old props and history format. It ran for one year, before relocating to Cardiff to replace the semi-permanent Doctor Who Exhibition Cardiff that at the capital’s Red Dragon Centre that ran between 2005 and 2011. The London Experience was a whole different level. While it ended with a comprehensive tour of props, costumes and merchandise, the main draw was the interactive storyline that dragged willing family groups through a ready-made storyline, combining pre-recorded film with the Doctor himself, animated sets, classic monsters and a ground-breaking 3d segment that recalled early IMAX trips to that new dimension.

Of course, it was all helped by marvelous zeitgeist. It opened in the prime of the new series’ first reboot, with the arrival of the Eleventh Doctor, tying directly into storylines set out by the show’s fifth series and picking up from the three-dimensional vortex promos that accompanied that new era. But as well-knitted into the fabric of the show as it was, enhancing the immersion, it was always going to be the dating element. As the ‘cracks in time’device that effectively brought us into the show collapsed into a tangle of on-screen plotting over inconsistently broadcast series, it became a piece of historical interest far more quickly than the old exhibits ever had. As with many of the new era exhibitions, items would arrive as series were made, disappearing as they were recalled. it was a natural rhythm, when the series ran consistently.

In summer 2012 the Experience opened in Cardiff Bay, in a new 3,000 sq m building at Porth Teigr, handily near to the BBC’s Roath Lock studios, where Doctor Who is produced, aiding the ins and outs of props. Expected to attract up to 250,000 visitors a year, it was hailed as a further coup for the Cardiff Bay development and a further boost for the clocal economy delivered by temporal rift. I visited that incarnation of the Experience once at its opening in London, then in Cardiff, accompanied by, after a rain-soaked run, a trip around the TARDIS studio itself.

And then last month I took a trip to Cardiff for one final, sign-off visit to the Experience.

The Present

With the arrival of the Twelfth Doctor, the dated crack in time plot was deemed just that bit too passé. That earlier trip had served up some nice moments in its guided urgency, not least a trip into the off-screen Dalek civil war which went just a little way to explain the quick repealling of the multi-coloured New Paradigm Daleks in the show. As of 2014, a new storyline written by Joe Lidster brought things up to the Twelfth Doctor, making use of some sets – anachronistically the early Eleventh Doctor TARDIS remained – and twisting the scripted journey, spattered with some great scripting, but lacking the buzz of the television linked original, into a new shape.

As fun as it was – if you ever think it isn’t amazing, picture that desolate ’90s hole when the show’s fire was tended by a mere few thousand fans – there remains something wonderfully BBC about it all. The concept, not as strong in the Capaldi era as the former Smith Experience, was a little tattered around the edges come the end, the staff almost imperceptibly haggard. Camera phones are forbidden on the journey, but there was surely a day when enforcing that rule fell into the concept.

the Experience should haev soared to the end, but that seldom happens in Who. Like the show itself, 12 years on from its glorious resurgence. A trail traipsing between Angels lacked bite, the visit to the underside of the TARDIS was missing some sparkle (really, because it recalls the awful Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS). There was nothing to match the Dalek fighting in the first, but the pepper pots gave it a go, as we sought suspiciously kryptonion shards that could sort the merry temporal mess out. Perhaps the highlight lay in the past. While the 3d finale wasn’t as captivating and centre-stage as the previous version, it ended on Totter’s Lane, where the story began. There it broke through into the exhibition, with the TARDIS set and production notes of 1963, brought to screen for the 50th anniversary with An Adventure in Time and Space.

As Steven Moffat always propounds, a little too much, Doctor Who‘s a show about change. And time for change it is. So the Experience ends with its second and final Doctor. Concept experiences remain strong, perhaps stronger now than when it opened – certainly in London. In Cardiff, although filled by the promotion surrounding its final summer, its shelf-life is apparent. A root around the Experience merchandise shop, highlighted it. Pride of place fell to the new Mr Men tie-in range, but everything else felt flat and familiar. It’s a luxury for the brand, where every T-shirt, DVD and mug once gleamed new.

The trick remains in the exhibition that follows the tour, wonderful, expansive and still continually updating, it’s a far cry from the crawl past zygons and krynoids at Longleat or through Cassandra on Brighton Pier. The fad for the Experience is likely to stick and develop. Doctor Who and BBC Worldwide will return to the theme. But as contrary and awkward as the show it celebrates, it’s the exhibition that retains the ageless class. And unlike the walkthrough, it’s a photographers’ dream. I’ll miss these unscripted trips tothe past. Until the next time. The next Experience.

T H E DIVINE M A S C U L I N E

As part of my transformation as the DIVINE FEMININE, being my true self inquires me to end up with a man who is his truest self. Ever since I changed, my heart no longer allows me to settle for anything less. What does that mean? Here is the definition of the DIVINE MASCULINE:

“When the Masculine meets the true, awakened Feminine, it arouses a new sensation in him, and activates specific levels of consciousness that demand his full attention. The awakened, whole, conscious Feminine does not act needy or desperate around the Masculine. This does not mean that she does not acknowledge her deep inner desire and sacred requirements for the Masculine presence to be in her life. She knows this better than any woman who has not yet opened up to her full powers and strengths. The awakened woman knows that the Masculine plays a vital role in her life journey, and has the ability to open her up in ways that she cannot do alone. In essence, she wants the masculine from a searingly profound place in her Soul. But – this ‘want’ can be put on hold for years and years – decades even – if she is not being met with the kind of Masculine presence and devotion that she needs in order to serve her sacred feminine role. When the Masculine meets the conscious Feminine vibration, it instantly realizes what is needed. The Masculine energy is stirred deeply and feels a pull on the Soul strings of his lost, dry, and forgotten heart. He realizes that although it is easy to lose himself in the glorious shakti sway of her body and the warmth of her sacred eyes, in order to stand next to her as a totem of divine masculine strength he must rise up in his own life. Her spiritual energy will cause his own to wake up to itself. He will become quickly aware that it will not be enough to lazily get what he wants and leave. He will recognize that even if he enters into a relationship with her, that her trust in him will not deepen unless he starts seriously showing up in his own life – and begins to rise like a phoenix towards his Full Purpose. Her awakened energy will not tolerate the spiritually-sleepy masculine tendencies towards laziness, denial, avoidance, staying in comfort zones, procrastination, cowardice and over-reliance on quick fixes and instant gratification. Her sacred energy will pull him up out of his coma and avoidance tactics, so that he feels on a visceral level just how potent and transformational loving her could be. He will also feel how loving her – and being a recipient of the healing codes in her body – instigates a firing of the neurons and electrical transmitters in his system, sparking him into awareness of just how much of a man he is required to evolve into. He realizes that she is the greatest gift that has ever crossed his path. He realizes that he may never have another opportunity like this one to be supported in becoming the best version of himself possible. He is aware that there is no other woman on the planet who could love him like this, and fire up his energy centers into creating the Divine Purpose he has always wanted to live, but has always been too scared to fully commit to. It is his decision whether or not he is brave enough to take the challenge of loving, and standing next to, a woman who has claimed her place as a sacred feminine warrior and holy chalice of love. It is really his decision in many ways, because although she will be the one to decide whether or not she wishes to see him again, or let him into her world – she is always doing that based on the quality of truth, assurance, purposefulness and willingness that she receives from him. When his Higher Self brings him to a Whole Woman, he must sit and contemplate, in order to realize that he has chosen this meeting – because a significant part of him is ready to ascend into being a Whole Man. I realize that your sexual attraction to me increases exponentially every time I take a risk to rise into my Divine Masculine power and purpose. I want to be a pioneer of a new movement of conscious, evolving, willing and open-hearted males, defying the old paradigms and awake enough to walk beside women who are changing the world forever. I might not remember any of this, much of the time, and I may stumble, fall, collapse or sometimes fail at it. I want only to remember that my willingness to live my Sacred Truth, and my desire to do everything I can to earn your trust, are enough. I want only to remember that if I shut down my heart at the first hint of truth that comes from your mouth, your body language, your expressions – I will not win this game. I want to only remember that you cannot be expected to ‘mother’ me into being a grown-up (if I want to have a sexually vital and transformative love life). I do not want you to be my mother.” We need manifestors for men of the Light to follow now, because it is vital that they stand up and realize their true worth and value in the advancing New Age. Awake Women do not want to batter men, criticize them, punish them, or shut their hearts and bodies down to them. Whole Women WANT men: their unwavering hard presence, their rock solid actions, their warrior hearts, their dynamic, pursuing energy. Many Men of the Light are choosing to cross paths with soul-embodied women now. Brexit - A Million Broken Promises

In the Remain or Leave referendum held on 23 June 2016, the UK decided at 51.9% to leave the European Union (EU), the world's largest economic and political partnership. Its Conservative government has triggered Article 50 of the Treaty of Lisbon, giving "notice to withdraw from the Union" with a two year deadline unless prior agreement is ratified. “Brexit” - a mashup of "British” and “Exit” - is therefore scheduled to take place on Friday, 29 March 2019 at 11 pm GMT. This is Brexit Day.

Mainstream media across the Anglosphere has portrayed Brexit as a fundamentally political divorce, involving a struggle between a sovereign nation (UK) and a quasi-federal central government (EU). Motivated self-interest is presumed to lie at the heart of this separation, the part of the United Kingdom and its national interest versus the authoritarian European Union and its contradictory objectives. This over-simplified narrative is presumed across the British political spectrum to be self evident. But is it really the case? It must needs perceive the EU as an rival or opponent, perverting the common market Britain joined in the 1970s into a totalitarian institution against the will of some or all of its member states. This is not only wrong but it rubbishes the decades hard work by British negotiators and civil servants bashing out the detail in every clause of every agreement the UK and the rest of Europe signed into; a consensus based on pragmatic self interest from the start. Small wonder the current clowns trying to bungle Brexit find at every turn the consequences of breaking this or that piece of European policy are a net loss to the UK.

There's no solution that's better for the UK because by default the UK has pushed its interests to great effect since 1971. That's the reality of the EU/UK relationship.

So what exactly is the European Union?

Rising from the ashes of broken Europe following the end of World War II, the European Union is intricate amalgam of treaties, policies, laws, and agreements. It isn't a sovereign entity. It isn't federal. It's a hybrid system of supranational and intergovernmental alliances, built on a vast internal single market developed between its 28 independent sovereign state members (the EU28).

The Far Right (so called populists) maps its traditional "us" and "them" proto-fascist paradigm onto the EU by encouraging discourse that faultily describes and personifies the EU as a foreign sovereign body, playing the part of an unelected totalitarian occupier. In the UK this role is covered by the UKIP political party and right-wing Conservatives, supported by half the oligarch-owned national media: Britain needs to fight to reclaim an economic and political freedom ceded to Brussels by turncoat past governments. It's an evocative black-and-white argument that, while it may be dismissed by the pro-EU middle classes as ridiculously myopic and too politically self-serving, gained traction with disenfranchised working class voters from the Right and the Left.

The failure of government to provide for all strata of society is certainly a problem but only in the UK did the disenfranchised austerity-battered electorate find itself offered "Remain or Leave the EU" susceptible to conflation of protest vote, social unrest and years fear mongering about 'dark' hordes of migrants and refugees turning Britain into a Sharia state. It's surprising the "Leave" vote didn't win by a larger margin.

Since the UK decided to leave the EU the remaining 27 state members have been cast as villains in the media, for having no contingency plans, for not acquiescing to the latest cherry-picked policies of the procrastinating minority Government in London. Popular misconceptions have calcified into a received wisdom: an appeal to xenophobia legitimised as British nationalism, casting Europe as an opponent not an ally, and - most ludicrous - presuming a false equivalency in relative negotiating position. The UK is making the running here, self-sabotage by another name. How can the EU not be negotiating from the stronger position, not simply by dint of being the bigger economic bloc but because all the extant agreements the UK might look to break are already favourable, already exemplifying British self interest?

All this throws into relief what the EU is, in a nuts and bolts sense. Closer to reality would be the analogy of Brexit as an enormously complex breach of contract, where one party evokes a break clause but then wants all the favourable parts of the contract to remain in force while others - all of which, let's not forget, were voluntarily and unanimously agreed - are selectively stricken from the record.

Every EU agreement represent a vast array of expertise, detailed studies, lengthy negotiations, millions of men hours, a blend of self-interest, compromise and consensus among the union’s 28 sovereign members.

Brexit’s real consequence is therefore not a “divorce” between two autonomous entities, with the UK wresting its sovereignty back, as it's currently argued by mainstream media. Instead, it's the greatest and stupidest breach of good faith in history.

In simple numbers the EU is a gestalt consequence of over 1,000,000 agreements, legal precedents, and unanimously ratified conventions. It has taken decades to draft, an unparalleled amount of monetary and human resources. Each of these million agreements were negotiated to serve the benefit EU28, including the UK. Each was signed and implemented freely by the individual sovereign state members. It should be no surprise we find navigating the maze of Brexit’s legal implications in a few short months is a ridiculously complex task, even if there were some route the UK could plot that wasn't damaging itself at every turn.

From a legal perspective, if the UK leaves the EU without some umbrella deal, all extant EU agreements will be deemed annulled and will necessitate renegotiations. The EU state members and the rest of the world would be need to draft new ones with the UK unless somehow extant EU trade deals were inherited by the UK; and why should they be? The UK on its own won't drive a better bargain with China than the EU as a super bloc.

Brexit will leave between three to four million Europeans living in the UK, and five to six million British citizens in the EU in an unsettling climate of uncertainty and displacement. By exiting the EU, the UK will also turn its back on all these people and for what? It would also lose out on influential partnership initiatives, which currently benefit:

Human rights and humanitarian aid (i.e. the European Convention on Human Rights, EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection (ECHO), and the European Development Fund (EDF));

Scientific advancement (i.e. the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Organization for Nuclear Research (C.E.R.N.), the European Research Area); and

Political and economic stability (i.e. the European Commission, and the Services in the Internal Market Directive), to name a few.

On Brexit Day, the UK will stop profiting from all the above-mentioned European initiatives, current EU agreements, and the EU’s single market system. In claiming independence – or more accurately, dissociation – from the EU, the UK is self-sabotaging its diplomatic and economic relations with its allies and neighbours, as well as its impact on the world. The UK is turning back the clock not to some non-existent Imperial past but to the very real closed borders, narrowing horizons, individual lost freedom, dearth of talent and expertise (e.g. a third of NHS nurses are European born).

With Brexit, UK rejects Europe’s identity and unity, symbolized through the European flag’s gold stars of “unity, solidarity, and harmony among the people of Europe.” Instead, it hangs on an archaic notion of British greatness, aligning itself with a globally in vogue populist movemen - the current modus operandi of exploiting interests aiming to direct the working poor against their own best interests.

It is no surprise that Donald J. Trump’s presidency, Brexit, and the Far Right in Europe are happening at the same time. While Trump claims to make America great again, Brexit aims to take back control. Both Trumpism and Brexit ostensibly yearn to bring their nations back to a pseudo-glorious past and protect them from the predatory nature of transnational market (also known as free market fundamentalism). This distorted, antiquated, and populist ideology is already occasioning much economic and political instability, disturbing trade and migration, not to mention corroding the ‘spirit’ of an entire nation. I’ll be upfront: I really love the 12-inch MacBook.

A few months ago, I realised that 8 GB of RAM was no longer enough for me. I don’t really throw intense workloads at my laptops, but I throw a multitude of light workloads running concurrently for long periods of time—hundreds of web browser tabs, dozens of PDFs, several Python instances, and so on. So OS X had to fall back on many gigabytes of page files, which was ... not ideal.

It was time to search for a new computer, and while I had been eyeing the 12-inch MacBook for a while, it had been mostly with no serious intentions to make it a daily driver. But the 2017 update brought with it a new option to have 16 GB of RAM on board [0], meaning it was actually in contention. And that update changed up a couple more things:

The new low-power Kaby Lake m3 is nearly on par with the Haswell i5 on my old MacBook Pro, depending on which benchmarks you believe. And it’s worth emphasising that I don’t really need a lot of CPU power—I have proper workstations for that sort of thing.

The new keyboard mechanism really improves how the key presses feel and sound, and is an awful lot more satisfying than the old design.

And, of course, as with the 2016 models, the RAM is clocked at 1866 MHz (for whatever that’s worth), and the computer is available in what Apple calls ‘Rose Gold’ but what I call ‘a weird mesmerising shade of metal’. Add to this the wonderful customer service I’ve had from Apple in the past and various promised improvements in High Sierra (including an honest-to-god modern file system), and I was sold.

I’ve now been using this thing for a few weeks, and I’ve been on High Sierra since it was released just so I could get the APFS migration over with. And let me tell you, I’m glad I went with this instead of the new MacBook Pro. It’s a near-perfect realisation of the portable computer as appliance, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be for so-called power users.

This is a true successor to that form factor, just a lot thinner—and I’m really glad for that.

While I’ve been keeping my old MacBook Pro on Mavericks, I had no choice in taking a leap into the new Mac OS with this purchase. But as it turns out, it’s actually been delightful. The loss of the old Aqua look (not to mention the startup chime) is sad, but the new look is actually very nice, and a lot of new features in Spotlight and Safari are welcome.

Of course, I would be remiss not to talk about the Taptic Engine on the trackpad. The click certainly isn’t a replacement for the crystal-clear click of a physical button, but it feels real enough. And the Force Touch look-up/preview functionality is something I've taken to using almost immediately in place of the old three-finger tap. And the best thing about this is that it’s basically system-wide with no effort required from developers beyond using the standard UI elements and whatnot. Why, it even works in my hacked-together Python-based Tumblr client:

High Sierra hasn’t been without bugs—I’ve been able to reliably make specific Finder windows freak out in glitches—but overall hasn’t ruined the experience at all. I’ve unfortunately not noticed UI performance improvements from Metal 2 or the allegedly rewritten WindowServer, but maybe that’ll be more noticeable with more usage.

If we want to talk drawbacks, the glaring one that’s been pointed out by most reviewers is the webcam. It’s 480p.

Here’s a sample of the glorious picture quality in middling to low light.

So yes, it’s grainy and blurry and generally just a severe step down from the 720p webcams on even the MacBook Air. But let’s be frank—almost nobody is transmitting full 720p video over VoIP calls. It would be preferable to have a larger image that then gets downscaled, but this is perfectly adequate in a pinch. I mean, even with this quality you can still tell that that’s the Doctor and Clara on the Batcycle under attack by a Dalek while a Weeping Angel chases them on a bicycle. It’s not like 480p quality is distractingly awful. (For those of you for whom it is, I’m sorry.)

I don’t really do video calls regularly enough for this to remotely matter anyway, so I’ll probably suffer less from this than whatever poor soul decides to try and hack into my webcam expecting to be able to covertly take crystal clear pictures of my life.

So, let’s talk about ports.

This was a carefully considered point for me, because I was painfully aware that the one thing I had to be sure if I went for this computer was that I didn’t need ports. But as much as I enjoy my ThinkPad’s abundance of connectors—including VGA—I realised that in practice, I didn’t use a lot of external devices with my MacBook Pro.

Sure, I’d lamented the loss of Ethernet and SuperDrive on the old Retina MacBook Pro (although gaining a proper HDMI port was a great boon), and I’d bought a few dongles for VGA and Ethernet. But in the end, those only came up a few times a year. I even bought a USB SuperDrive in case I needed to use a CD with the Pro, but I think I’ve only used it once, and even then just to check that it worked. It wasn’t a use case where I couldn’t have just imaged it on my desktop and transferred the ISO file to my Mac.

For this MacBook, I’ve bought Apple’s USB/HDMI dongle anyway because I do need HDMI once in a while and I needed some way to connect to my Apple Iic (through a USB-to-serial adapter), but the only thing I’ll really miss having always available to me is a SD card reader. [3] Even that, ultimately, can be replaced by a regular USB connection to my cameras, although I may still buy an external reader somewhere down the line.

Of course, the lack of connectors completely disqualifies it as a desktop replacement. But not all so-called power users should be looking for a desktop replacement anyway. Video or photo editing on this thing is, perhaps, a lost cause. But scientific or programming tasks are a very different story. In my case, where most of my work is done on a command-line interface or some kind of hopelessly hacked-together setup, having a beefy workstation and networking wirelessly with it serves a lot of my more power- or connector-hungry needs.

I see a lot of people recommending the base model 13-inch rMBP over the 12-inch rMB. That, the reasoning goes, is just more computer for the same price. But 128 GB of storage on the base 13-inch rMBP is simply anaemic, and while the CPU and iGPU are indeed more powerful (with at least ~20% higher CPU scores on Geekbench 4), it’s not so much more powerful that it’s worth giving up local storage and that extra edge in portability. If you need proper Thunderbolt 3 rather than just USB-C, go for the Pro. If you need that extra colour gamut coverage, go for the Pro. If you need MagSafe ... well, you’re just screwed, aren’t you? But if you just need a portable computer, grab a 12-inch and go crazy with it.

It’s a realisation that I’ve been coming to very slowly over the past decade, but the mobile computer as appliance is a paradigm that makes more and more sense, not only for phones and tablets but also just as much for ‘proper’ computers. When I’m travelling, I don’t need configurability. I don’t need the option to switch to a hefty graphics card or five USB ports to connect to nothing in particular. All I need on the go is a thin, light device that’s got enough processing power and lots of RAM for multitasking [4], and can work effortlessly with my other mobile devices while complementing my workstations nicely. And with the 2017 update, despite some reservations about the camera and the lack of a card reader, the 12-inch MacBook fits that bill otherwise perfectly.

[0: It’s not a cheap option by any means—the option to upgrade to 16 GB RAM costs almost as much as the option to upgrade to the top CPU option (an ‘i7’, even though it’s really closer to one of the old m7 CPUs). But trust me on this—if you’re in the market for one of these, go for the RAM upgrade, not for the CPU. With the fanless design of the computer, the CPU’s not going to take heavy and/or prolonged loads well anyway, and future applications will probably demand more memory faster than they will more CPU.]

[1: While I embrace much of the new Apple, the two things I will never be on board with are the capitalisation of Mac OS and that horrid Finder icon. I actually spent a fair few hours replacing that icon with one I assembled myself.]

[2: Yes, that’s what I’ve been doing instead of buying a proper case. And the Pro really is a little too thick and a little too heavy to do this comfortably.]
