What weapon would you think Elliott wields beyond just the pencil
Ok as absolutely hilarious as him wielding a pencil is, I kind of went in the direction of "if he had to choose his weapon", in which case I'd have to say a very fancy over decorated rapier. He does NOT actually know how to use it don't ask him. But he thinks it's pretty and ACTS like he knows how to use it. He would pass out if he had to encounter any monster but he has spirit and that's what counts.
#I may be biased because my character in the dnd campaign I'm in also wields an obnoxiously decorated rapier#because he's also an oddball /pos#stardew valley#sdv elliott#elliott stardew#sdv fanart#fanart#my art#ask#requests#melonae

THE ROOK FIC??-?:$9,71(11$8-
Rook is such a fascinating character and your character study felt like reading an appreciation post for him in the best way possible😭😭
Like you wrote him so in character in sucha tender way and like OHMMDISI oh my goodness he felt *real* and just the way you went about articulating his appreciation for beauty in all of its facets was absolutely wonderful and now I’m gonna be thinking about the French man for days on end.
He’s so cute and him being stunned at being appreciated and just *seen* UGH no one talk to me while I wallow and weep at the sheer magnificence of this ficlet. OH MY GOODNESS THE WRITING HAD ME SWOONING BRo

a lot of ideas infest my brain but this one is pretty new! partially because recently i've been getting into more popular vocaloid songs (mou ikkai! mou ikkai! "watashi wa kyou mo korogarimasu." to shoujo wa iu, shoujo wa iu) and po pi po. has taken me in (mwehehe!!!)
so imma just write yet another 2dmv (this is more of a draft than anything tho soooo. no cool sections with specific vocal lines)
so mhm! for april fools this year how about we torture rui >:333
(except it isn't we cuz i'm sure "we" aren't like. sega or colorful palette's project sekai team)
as always because this thing is going to be long, you're welcome mobile users blah blooh bleh, i puteth the stuff under the cut so go check it out if you want
hold on imma title it and everything though i haven't fleshed out really specific parts
Po Pi Po - LamazeP (ft. Miku Hatsune, Emu Otori, Nene Kusanagi)
anyways! we torture rui >:DDD
so! for the 2dmv! it's in the style of a 3dmv with like a general stage-y dancey area and blah
yes. we torture rui. that. that's like all there is.
emu, nene and miku are all in slightly altered green workout project diva (?) outfits with different details and stuff i guess (but they all have to match cuz cohesive set thingy.)
so from the beginning of the song to around the end of the first chorus we're in the wondershow sekai, with rui sat at a table, refusing to eat his vegetable filled bentou. nuh-uh. no way in bahooey. and emu, miku and nene are just walking around him as. the po pi po cult, tryna get him to eat his food. oh also meiko rin len and luka have rui at tazer-point so if he ever tries to run off he'd probably go bbbrzrzZRRZRZRZBZRZBZRZBRZRZRZBZBRZRBZRBZRZZZZZZ (yes, in bold)
and then around after the first chorus, kaito leads tsukasa to the main area and he's like. what's going on. and then he sees the table, rui and the vegetable-filled bentou. ohhhhhhhhhhhh. but instead of joining the po pi po cult he goes sits at the table with rui and tries to coax him into actually eating his vegetables.
(for the whole thing the camera focuses on the po pi po cult, but from here rui and tsukasa argue in the back. like look. "but they taste disgusting!" "but they're good for you!" "have you even felt the texture of those disgusting things?" "just eat it TwT" "let's kiss" "sur... sTOP DISTRACTING ME")
and yeah after that exchange of dialogue we focus on more po pi po cult!! in the choruses there's going to be. flying vegetables and like vegetable juice carton box thingy cutouts cuz we have to push the theme or something
and po pi po cult is surrounding the oddballs (mainly 2) and yk. pushing him to eat the vegetables.
and then around the second chorus in the back tsukasa goes "*sigh* okay fine. if i kiss you will you eat your vegetables?" but rui only heard kiss so they go at it (woo.)
but then but then!! (for some reason i feel like he sounds like nene here if she wasn't part of the po pi po cult) near the end, (a very flustered, tomato-red) tsukasa's like "okay. now eat your vegetables." "eh?!" "what eh. that was the deal." "there was a deal?!?" "stop playing dumb =w= eat your vegetables before i take these chopsticks and feed you myself." "waa~, you're going to feed me? kasa, you're such a romantic~" "...mhm... *looks at vegetable-filled bentou*"
"YOU'RE GOING TO FEED ME THESE VEGETABLES?!?!?"
"if i must."
"BETRAYAAAL."
and then at the very end we see a (chibi?) rui with tears streaming down his face, mouth full of lettuce.
(for him this is torture of the highest degree.)
yeah i sent this to a friend on discord they were mainly focusing on the gay scrunkles
no literally they just went. "*le gasp* GAYS AWWWW GAYS I LOVE GAYS <3333 THEY'RE SUPER SILLY I LOVE THEM :DDD" dude i also made an entire cult of three people to feed vegetables to one person with purple hair and a soda candy addiction so. please focus on that too
#project sekai#hatsune miku#prsk#pjsk#ruikasa#<- i guess i'll put that tag there i mean they literally kiss sooooo#wonderlands x showtime#wxs

Thanks for answering my ask....If you don't mind me asking (again), can I ask, what are your top 10 (or top 7) favorite media (can be books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series)? Why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....
I am once again answering asks months later than I should have because time isn’t real and I never open my phone BUT I will never give up an excuse to talk about the stuff I like so let’s go
(This is in no particular order because besides the first two I can’t pick a favourite child)
1) interview with the vampire (tv)
God. This thing has taken over my brain chemistry. I first watched it as the first season aired a few years back and loved it then and now that the second season has aired I literally cannot stop thinking about it. I have watched every episode of this series at least four times, some more than others because I genuinely can’t get enough. It’s simply so perfect to me… the camp… the vampires… everyone should watch this at least once in their lives (I am also currently working my way through the books and they are so tasty)
2) nbc Hannibal
GUH. I strangely never talk about it but Hannibal was one of the first shows to rewire my brain like iwtv has. I first watched it back in high school I think after a girl I had a crush on lended it to me on a usb stick and I think it’s so perfect. I find it really beautiful in a real vile way (pos) and can watch it over and over without tiring (in fact I could probably recite many of the episodes off by heart which I wouldn’t consider a problem but Some People might). The relationship between Hannibal and Will is so palpable and harrowing and I genuinely once wrote an essay on it for uni (I got an eighty) because I’m Normal
3) life is strange 2
a bit of a random one, but ever since I played the first episode of lis2, I’ve been obsessed with it. say what you want about the lis games, but there’s something really lovely to me about Sean and Daniel. maybe it’s because it reminds me of my little brother, maybe it’s because the experience of being a Latin person in North America is so familiar, but it’s a really beautiful game and I’ve replayed it… seven times now? I think? I keep trying to get different endings but I’m weird about making people do bad stuff in video games surprisingly
4) red dead redemption 2
Look man. I like cowboys, I like the great outdoors, I like the idea that Arthur Morgan (gunslinging criminal) is actually a pretty princess. Maybe I’m projecting but he really is a beautiful woman to me. this is another game I’ve played way too many times even though playing the epilogue bit where you have to build the fence makes me want to die. also Javier and John should kiss and I want sadie Adler to be my wife
5) sarazanmai
Maybe a bit of an oddball but this is one of those anime that’s like looking at a car wreck. You simply cannot look away. What began as a strange, mythological mindfuck of a show slowly morphed into a beautiful story about queerness and friendship and love and I recommend it to everyone because I just think it’s so good
6) wildhood
This movie fundamentally changed me. It’s a Canadian queer indigenous coming of age film that I watched on a whim when I was scrolling through a streaming service on a lazy weeknight a few years ago, and I didn’t expect it to be something so beautiful and touching. It’s about a young guy named link who finds out his mother (who left him with his abusive father) is alive, and so he crosses the province trying to find her with his younger half brother and someone who’d saved him from some racist convenience store owner. It’s a visually really pretty movie, and on top of that the story is absolutely beautiful and makes me cry every time I watch it. I think I’ve forced every single one of my friends to watch this movie all the while I stared at them like this 👁️👁️ to gauge their reaction to it. please please please watch this
7) to be taught if fortunate by becky chambers
this book!!!!!! THIS BOOK!!!! I had to read this for first year English my first year of university and normally books I’m forced to read are never ones that have a hold on me but I genuinely could not put this book down. I’m also not really one for science fiction, but despite the overall premise (a bunch of researchers get cryo slept in space only to awake and find that a disaster has happened on earth, wiping out a majority of the population) I feel like it focuses less on the science fiction and more so on the relationships between all of the astronauts, most of whom are queer and in a weird pseudo poly relationship with each other. idk I just thought this book was really beautiful and fun and I think everyone should read it
8) jojo’s bizarre adventure
look. this thing had to make it on here okay. I put off getting into jojo for a long time even though I’d been thoroughly aware of it even back in middle school, and when I finally caved I watched all of it in about two months, shaking and gnawing at the bars of my enclosure the whole time. it’s just so silly and fun and I think kishibe rohan should be real (he is)
I was going to add more but my brain somehow isn’t working so I’m going to do some honourable mentions again in no particular order: yakuza series, death note, after dark by haruki murakami, anything by Allen Ginsberg, kill your darlings, it’s always sunny in Philadelphia, fellow travellers (book and show)
Thank you so much for the ask!

Um um, if it’s okay can you do my OC? Her name is Nora, she’s a pansexual/panromantic Latina with shoulder length brown hair, shirt and a little chubby, brown eyes, freckles. She has a cute but casual taste in clothes, things like pink hair ribbons, skirts with cute tops, sneakers, knee socks, sorta things. She particularly likes weird cute earrings, like those gimmicky ones that look like bows or ufos or lava lamps.
She has a very sweet and friendly personality! Very excitable and bubbly, cares *so* much about people. Like, too much so lmao, she never had a lot of friends because she came on too strong. These days she comes across as a crybaby, ditzy, and desperate, but she just wants to be nice and make friends but she doesn’t know what is “too much”. She’s not good at relying on people because she’s never had anyone to rely on but she doesn’t get bitter or resentful, just sadder and more self-reliant—she never expects anything from people, so she gets especially excited when anyone is even sorta nice to her haha
She’s a really good listener because she’s interested in everything! If someone is invested in something she’d love to know everything about it—partially a natural curiosity but mostly that she likes to value and respect other people’s time and it’s a way of building a connection and making someone feel understood and heard. It’s something she craves, so she likes to give it to other people.
She’s also really creative! She has a really eclectic and eccentric taste, so she likes weird patterns on clothes and drawing badly—she loves expressing herself! Which often comes across as oddball.
She really admires very charismatic, sociable, independent people, and really relates to people who are lonely or that others don’t really understand. It takes a *lot* for her to not like someone, but if someone proves themselves to be mean or disrespectful of other people’s feelings *on purpose*, then she will gladly get mad at them on someone else’s behalf lmao.
Overall she’s just very sweet, a little eccentric, very excitable, and gets nervous about offending or annoying people.
Sorry for such a long message! Feel no need to respond XD have a great day!
(A/N: Yay! Another OC matchup!/pos)
It seems to me you've captured the heart of...
The Immaculate Adept:
Toa Qelsum!
Nora's bubbly and carefree disposition catches him off guard at first. Toa's grown up in a rigid and uptight environment, so she may have unintentionally come off a little strong for him at first. As much as he wants to dismiss her, he cannot help but feel fascinated by her
Social cues are a struggle for her, but she knows that Toa was off-put by her, and in her anxiety, she tries to dial it back. And Toa realizes this.
Their relationship would go pretty much the same as in the consort path. Toa takes Nora under his wing and teaches her magic. Some of the more... questionable things he did, he realizes was a bit much. He can tell himself it was "unproductive" till his complexion matches his hair colour, but really it was guilt.
He gets to know her more as she spends more time with him under his tutelage. On the surface, Toa and Nora could not be any more different: Nora is expressive, Toa is not. Nora is cheerful, Toa is not. But eventually, they learn that one thing they *do* have in common is their independence. They expect little out of people, at least in terms of friendships (let alone romance). He does eventually voice that he would not discourage you depending on him from time to time.
One thing Toa especially likes about Nora is that she is a good listener. Since she is such a good listener, he likes to talk to her, and when he feels certain he can open up to you, he'd do just that. Your willingness to lend an ear is a welcome change of pace.
In turn, Nora also feels ecstatic that she got to see how kind Toa is underneath his icy facade. She did admire him from afar, and the time she spent with him was all the more reason for her to be absolutely head-over-heels for him. Time and time again, she was a safe space for him and made him feel understood and validated, and Toa did the same for her.
in a nutshell, their relationship is the duality of the Autism Creature: one who embraces their authenticity, and the other who masks. Nora helps him to get in touch with his more authentic self (he also gets be a little shit in the most wholesome way) and Toa helps her reign in her enthusiasm as well as be her rock, (She just seems really autistic-coded to me, so...)

The 5 best animated movies on Netflix
Bee Movie (2007)
EW grade: A– (read the review)
Directors: Simon J. Smith and Steve Hickner
Cast: Jerry Seinfeld, Renée Zellweger, Matthew Broderick, John Goodman, Patrick Warburton, Chris Rock
Lights, camera, VPNaction! Elevate your movie nights with NordVPN. 🎥🔒secure your connection and Download NordVPN . Click now to unlock global cinematic thrills!
From the twisted mind of Jerry Seinfeld came this oddball DreamWorks comedy about a talking bee (also voiced by Seinfeld) who is outraged by the exploitation of his species for honey and decides to sue the human race. Along the way, he also sort of falls in love with a human florist (Renée Zellweger). Despite (because of?) its wild premise, Bee Movie gets at some potent messaging about workers' rights and the differences between individualism and collectivism. In other words, as EW's critic noted, it's "nutty, ecological, antically funny, and moving, all at the same time." The film has subsequently inspired a surprising number of memes, adding to its bizarro lore.
Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2005)
EW grade: N/A (read the review)
Directors: Nick Park and Steve Box
Cast: Peter Sallis, Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter
Following the success of their universally acclaimed shorts, Aardman Animations brought Wallace and Gromit to the big screen for this humorous tale in which the eccentric inventor and his loyal dog are tasked with hunting down a rabbit who's been eating the town's crop of vegetables. But this proves easier said than done, as the pair realizes that the dreaded Were-Rabbit may be closer to home than they suspected. Packed with the studio's trademark British wit, and lovingly crafted with stop-motion claymation, the Oscar-winning film is a total delight. As EW's critic wrote, "The Curse of the Were-Rabbit bestows generous blessings on all that's good in Englishness, in moviedom, and, of course, in cheese.
Kung Fu Panda (2008)
EW grade: A– (read the review)
Directors: John Stevenson and Mark Osborne
Cast: Jack Black, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Ian McShane, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross, Randall Duk Kim, Jackie Chan
Lights, camera, VPNaction! Elevate your movie nights with NordVPN. 🎥🔒secure your connection and Download NordVPN . Click now to unlock global cinematic thrills!
Kung Fu Panda may have a gimmicky title, but the sincerity of its storytelling is as effective as any DreamWorks animation released to date. Giant panda Po (Jack Black) is a humble restauranteur living in Ancient China who idolizes a quintet of kung fu masters known as the Furious Five. His dreams become a rude awakening when he stumbles his way into becoming the prophesized Dragon Warrior, and tasked with fighting off a vengeful snow leopard who wishes to obtain the all-powerful Dragon Scroll. Featuring vibrant animation and colorful voice performances from Black, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, and more, Kung Fu Panda delights in slapstick comedy while also delivering its timeless message in unique fashion. As EW's critic put it, "Just about all animated movies teach you to Believe in Yourself…but the image of a face-stuffing panda-turned-yowling Bruce Lee dervish is as unlikely, and touching, an advertisement for that message as we've seen in quite some time.
The Adventures of Tintin (2011)
EW grade: C (read the review)
Director: Steven Spielberg
Cast: Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig
Lights, camera, VPNaction! Elevate your movie nights with NordVPN. 🎥🔒secure your connection and Download NordVPN . Click now to unlock global cinematic thrills!
Bringing The Adventures of Tintin to life was decades in the making for director Steven Spielberg, who once referred to the comic book series as "Indiana Jones for kids." The action is set in 1950s Belgium as the inquisitive journalist Tintin (Jamie Bell) purchases a miniature model of a ship called the Unicorn, setting in motion a chaotic series of events that leads to him being kidnapped by a villainous ship collector. On board, he meets Capt. Archibald Haddock (Andy Serkis), whose ancestor was the captain of the real-life Unicorn. Bursting with a high-energy sense of adventure, Tintin is indeed a fun starter pack to the thrilling escapades of Indiana Jones, with dazzling CG animation that uses elements of motion capture. The film won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature, and earned yet another Oscar nomination for John Williams for his original score.
Nimona (2023)
EW grade: B+ (read the review)
Directors: Nick Bruno and Troy Quane
Cast: Chloë Grace Moretz, Riz Ahmed, Eugene Lee Yang, Frances Conroy, Lorraine Toussaint, Beck Bennett, RuPaul, Indya Moore, Julio Torres, Sarah Sherman
Lights, camera, VPNaction! Elevate your movie nights with NordVPN. 🎥🔒secure your connection and Download NordVPN . Click now to unlock global cinematic thrills!
Blending medieval folklore and futuristic fantasy, this high-spirited adaptation of the 2015 graphic novel is more timely now than ever. Chloë Grace Moretz gives voice to Nimona, a mischievous shapeshifter who comes to the aid of Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), a knight who has since been ostracized by the kingdom due to his background as a commoner. Naturally, Nimona has her own history with being outcast, and the pair unravel a conspiracy that resulted in the queen's death. Featuring a powerful queer allegory, both Nimona and Ballister try to overcome prejudice from their community while forging a bond due to their circumstances. As EW's critic wrote, "The story admiringly delves into how such monsters are in fact created by a society that refuses to accept their differences." —Kevin Jacobsen

Why do you like Mineta?/genq Also has anyone ever questioned you for why you liked the "problematic" characters or pairings in a fandom?
uh oh
Funnily enough I think for the most part I like Mineta because I'm just not that into BNHA, meaning I don't take it very seriously when I watch it, so I don't find him THAT out of place. There's a couple Mineta scenes that had me almost in tears of laughter when I first saw them I just think he's a silly guy;;
When he explained his quirk to Deku + Tsu and was like "I can place balls on things :D..." and there was a long silence before he just started crying so fucking loud out of nowhere KILLED me i think about it so much
His whole training under mount lady was very funny to me and how he said all women were demons and then immediately got over it idk he makes me laugh. Just a shitty little teenage boy. My son
According to my LetterBoxd review of Two Heroes: extra stars for mineta climbing up to the among us vent and just chanting "haremharemharemharemharemharem"
I WILL SPECIFY BEFORE SOMEONE GETS MY ASS- I do in fact loathe the the low-hanging fruit of "spy on the girls bath," "haha momo's boobies," "I can't wait to see this 6 year old when she grows up," or just general sexual harassment and straight up groping is like. Hashtag Not Funny and Just Weird + Cringe, but also I'm kinda unphased by it because I'm SO used to that in anime that it's like ok whatever. sure buddy. If I personally liked BNHA better and were more attached to some of the serious characters I'm sure it'd bother me a lot more and I would hate him too, but alas.
I ALSO JUST REALLY LOVE HIS DESIGN HE'S SO ROTUND BUT SHARP NOSE+MOUTH AND FUNNY LOOKING SLASH POS I LIKE HIM !!!!! ODDBALL CHARACTERS CAN BE SO FUCKING FUN!!! Purple/yellow is a good combo!!
His dynamic in the class also steadily gets funnier to me because he just gets less and less reactions. everyone is just eternally putting up with him forever. I don't know how much anything changes from like season 4 and up (or especially anything in the manga) because I'm behind but ykno.
...
As for your second question I laughed VERY audibly because I fully respect the notion that you think anyone could possibly go anywhere in any fandom space without being questioned or just straight up attacked for liking the problematic aspects of media. I will not elaborate on this too much because :) but it's something people used to get on my ass for a LOT back when I was newer to fandoms, but I think over time they gave up and I started caring less which is SO nice on the brain.

Top 10 fave crimes committed by 2d idols?
Ohh my godd please keep in mind i only know very little of everything going on in enstars so far ok? And i havent gotten that into Milgram and Paradox Live for them to be on this list yet. Also in my heart Hypmic characters are 2d idols cuz i say so.
1. Eichi starting a war that kickstarts the entire plot of Ensemble Stars
2. And ofc the fact that everyone refers to the 5 oddbals' defeat as their "execution" and they talk about having blood on their hands etcetc
3. The entire Meteor Impact cannibal cult bs oh my god i think about it daily
4. Ramuda being forced to put Jakurai's assistant/adopted son into a coma cuz he had figured out Ramuda isn't human
5. Actually, Jakurai's entire past as an assassin
6. Whatever Ibara and Yuzuru did in the military as kids. Imagine being me, getting into enstars knowing there are trigger warnings for war mentions, assuming they're referring to Eichi's dramatic metaphorical war, and then finding out that no, there is an Actual War as well, and some of the characters were child soldiers
7. All the kidnappings in enstars bro i cant keep track, the latest one i've read was about a guy named the Gatekeeper who was keeping Anzu hostage in his castle, i havent read the story before this one so i cant even give you context, the whole SS Arc is just. How is any of this legal?? LOVE insane shit like this in my idol stories<3
8. Going off the last one, look at the table of contents for this one story Secret Service
It's still on my to read list if i can find it translated, but just. I already know it deserves a spot here with those titles alone
9. This one shouldnt even count, but just all of Eichi's monologues kill me personally so they're crimes now (/pos)
10. Not quite a crime but Sogo pulling up knives on people. And Nagi and Tamaki accidentally getting involved in a terrorist attack (where Nagi beats the shit out of the terrorists). Idolish7 is tame compared to my other idol shows but i think it deserves a place on all my lists because i love it so much<3

What do you think about the characters in mv?
I think they are AWESOME and I wish to give hugs to all those who’d want them. I think Mocha and Noah’s dynamic is absolutely beautiful, but I don’t love them just for their relationship. I like that when we first meet Noah we believe that he’s really reserved and such (at least I did), but as the story goes on, we get to see more of him and how caring he is of his friends. Mocha is an absolute complete and total catboy. No one can tell me otherwise, not even Mocha himself. I think it’s so amazing that Mocha also plays piano, which is nice because I feel like the “coffee shop characters” tend to have their life revolving around coffee, and adding in the struggles of a musician is wonderful too (as a musician myself, I would know of the struggles of a musician). Shikuro is Babey and you can fight me on that. I love getting to read about him, because he always seemed like a very oddball character that didn’t really make sense at first, but as time progressed you slowly began to learn more about him and his struggles, and you can’t help but get upset when he’s in pain. Stein is hilarious but also stars I hope he gets more rest. That concussion of his was very painful to read about. I also adore the fact that Arcturus and Stein are siblings??? Not related by blood, but still!!!! It’s amazing to learn about the relationships between everyone, and not just romantic. Arcturus is a shy tall boy who is kinda socially awkward, and those characters tend to be the best characters of all. Gives off tons of himbo energy /pos. And the other characters who aren’t as active anymore, like Mocosca (I think that’s how you spell????) was very fun to read about, same with Lysander, Sepia, and Vivian!!
And also, this wasn’t a part of the question, but can I just say yo???????? To all the people who run the Moriverse blogs????????? Thank you so much for all of the time and effort you’ve put into this story, I absolutely ADORE reading it, and I hope I’m inspiring others to read it too!!!!!!
tl;dr Moriverse has amazing characters that I love dearly and the people running the Moriverse blogs are amazing, go give them support!!!!!
@crackerqueen-ineedsleep because I know you’ll want to see this if you weren’t the one who asked this
#lynn talks#ask lynn#anon asks#moriverse#seriously I adore Moriverse#this isn’t even an exaggeration either#I’m in love and FUCK WHERE IS MY SKETCHBOOK I WANNA DRAW THEM NOW

If you liked Tamora Pierce you might like...
Thought it might be fun to offer up some book recs, on the off-chance that anybody is looking for something new to read. Suggestions welcome, and thanks to @lisafer for her additions! Series links are to the first book on goodreads.
Sharon Shinn
Shinn writes high fantasy, with strong female characters. She's got a couple of different universes, but the ones I'd recommend are:
Twelve Houses - the most like the Tortall books, in my view. Follows a ragtag band of Breakfast Club-style oddballs - two mages, two shapeshifters, and two Riders (essentially the king's men) - as they investigate unrest in the kingdom. They shouldn't fit together, but they do.
Elemental Blessings - similar to Emelan in that mages are generally attuned towards one particular thing. In the first book (Troubled Waters), Zoe has been living with her father in exile, but after he passes, she gets dragged right back into court politics when the king chooses her for his fifth wife.
Leigh Bardugo
Bardugo has two series (third pending!) in the same universe. The Grisha Verse is mage-led and a dark romance. Six of Crows* is essentially a crime caper duology with fantastic characters, and I had the sense of 'I think they're going to pull this off... but how??' throughout. If you've ever wanted the Court of the Rogue to feature more heavily in Tammy's books, I recommend this.
Diana Wynne Jones
I must have been living under a rock because I only read Howl's Moving Castle last year. If some of you are in the same boat, this is a fairytale-esque story about a girl who gets on the wrong side of a witch, and winds up being transformed into an old lady. Hoping to break the spell, she goes in search of the wizard Howl, rumoured to steal and eat the hearts of girls.
Natasha Pulley
Sorry to anybody who also follows me on my personal journal since it’s all I’ve been talking about, but I just read The Watchmaker of Filigree Street*, and it's so charming I'm going to recommend it here too. Set in Victorian London (though with scenes in Japan), it features mystery, a gentle romance (if you're worried about liking the thing because you've been burned before, rest assured that it is okay to like the thing), and a clockwork octopus! Slow to start, but worth it.
Rainbow Rowell
Wrote a novel about a Fangirl (essentially a Drarry fanfic writer) who feels set adrift once she starts college, and then wrote the canon behind it, and I'm delighted that the sequel to Carry On* is called Wayward Son.

The Graceling Realm is a trilogy featuring a non-chronological tale that starts with Katsa, who is born with the grace of killing. Select few are graced, and like others, she’s immediately placed in the service to her uncle, the king, who uses her to terrify his subjects. Then Prince Po comes to court, looking for his kidnapped grandfather, and Katsa goes on a journey with him that will change their world forever.
Maggie Stiefvater
Assuming most of you have heard of the Raven Cycle*, but just in case - Gansey is in search of the ancient Welsh king, Glendower, and Blue knows Gansey is going to be dead within the year before she even meets him. Set in real world Virginia, with magic along the lines of clairvoyance and dreamscapes, plus the angriest dreamer you're likely to encounter (don't worry - internally, he's got the consistency of marshmallow).
Cinda Williams Chima
Seven Realms: Han Alister is a thief who will do anything for his family; he steals an amulet from a wizard, but it turns out to have belonged to a Demon King from a thousand years prior. Meanwhile, Raisa is a princess of two worlds who doesn’t want to be an ornament. She would rather be like Hanalea, the legendary warrior queen who killed the Demon King and saved the world. Things get interesting when Han and Raisa’s worlds collide. This is a longer series, and one where you get to see characters “level up” from people with limited abilities to near god-like power.
Connie Willis
Firmly on the sci-fi side of things, and I'm mostly including this because of how much my fellow TP friends love this series. The All Clear duology follows three historians who go back in time from Oxford 2060 to study history. They're supposed to observe a particular event and immerse themselves in the experience without affecting the past before going back to their present day. Things get messy.
D.M. Cornish
In a world of flintlock pistols and lamplighters, The Monster Blood Tattoo trilogy begins with the journey of Rossamund, an orphan boy taunted for his girlish name. He is about to begin a dangerous life in service to the emperor, and his simple journey gets complicated in a world of predatory monsters, chemical potions, and surgically altered people designed to keep the monsters at bay. Rossamund has to learn who to trust and who to fear, among both monsters and people. This world is such delightfully dark steampunk, and it’s incredibly detailed. Incidentally, Tamora Pierce gave the series a five-star rating on goodreads!
* features LGBTQ foreground relationship - Fangirl is the only one I can think of with wlw, and unfortunately, she's more of a background character. Elemental Blessings does feature lgbtq content, but not with a main character.

An Interview with Mark McNulty
Whilst the birth of modern-day club culture is much chatted about, very few people took the time to document it. Mark McNulty is a rare exception.
From the early days of warehouse raves to the age of the super-club, he candidly captured ‘going out’ at a level usually reserved for hard-hitting documentary photography.
Here’s an interview with him conducted on a Monday afternoon in the centre of Liverpool. I think it’s important to state here that club photography is only a small part of Mark’s repertoire — it’s just what we happened to talk about at the time.
Maybe an obvious first question, but when did you get into photography?
I don’t know if I’d taken pictures on someone else’s camera or something, but I just wanted a camera. And when I was 14, my mum and dad got me one. I think it was a Praktica — it was a really basic camera.
I can remember saying to my mum and dad that I wanted to be a photographer, but I can’t remember ever thinking too much about it as a career. When I had film, I’d take pictures. They were probably mostly rubbish.
But then there came a point where the stuff around me got more interesting. I started seeing bands and going to clubs. Before that I’d just take pictures of my nan.
A Guy Called Gerald - Liverpool
How did the club photography come about?
There was a club in Liverpool called The State, and that was the club I’d go to with my mates. We’d go on a Thursday night, and it was a penny to get in. They’d play things like The Smiths, but then they’d also play old 60s records and old Northern Soul records. It would play everything.
It was an old 1920s ballroom, with a tiled floor, and was actually the venue that Franky Goes to Hollywood played on their first appearance on The Tube. It was in that film Letter to Brezhnev too. And that club started playing a couple of those early house records.
Around that time, I’d started getting in with various musicians, and there was a man called Peter Coyle who was in a band called The Lotus Eaters. He put on night called 8 Orgasms where there’d be all kinds of mad shit.
There’d be arty bands, performance artists and a karaoke machine. And he brought in a DJ called John Maccready who’d play house records. And that was the first place that did dance music that I took pictures of.
8 Orgasms - Liverpool
At The State I’d take pictures of bands who were up on stage, but taking a camera out and photographing people dancing, before the rave scene, didn’t feel like the obvious thing to do.
When did things change?
I got asked by a Manchester magazine called Avant to go and photograph a club called Quadrant Park. It was in some sort of warehouse up in Bootle, and it was massive.
People had come from all over the North. I hated it, but I loved it. There was no dancefloor because the whole place was the dancefloor.
Quadrant Park - Liverpool
How did you go about taking pictures in there?
There was no benchmark, because I’d never really seen any pictures like that. That first night, I didn’t take a lot of photographs, I just got these mad crowd scenes of people with their hands in the air and people on speakers.
Before that, people were just going to nightclubs to cop-off — that old fashioned night club thing where the people would stand around the edges watching girls to move in on. But suddenly, everybody was dancing together and nobody was taking any notice of the oddball with the camera.
After that I started going to more and more clubs that started opening up in town.
When you’re going there were you going there to take pictures, or could you enjoy it like everyone else?
At first I was there to take pictures. I’m terrible at hearing in loud places as I can’t differentiate between sounds, so once I’d taken a few pictures in a club, that just made me want to do more. I can never talk to people in clubs because I can never hear them, so taking photographs was my way of dealing with being in places like that.
When I look back, I sometimes I haven’t got pictures of my favourite clubs. The ones I really enjoyed, I didn’t really take pictures at.
How did you get involved with the club magazines?
I just thought that what was going on around me was cool so I started to send in photographs to the magazines. These were the nationals like I-D, The Face, Mixmag and DJ Mag. They liked what I sent in from Liverpool, so they started to send me to places out of town and then further afield.
Suddenly everybody was dancing together and nobody was taking any notice of the oddball with the camera.
In 1992 I went off to Rimini to photograph a week of clubbing and, after getting a bit wobbly and running into a glass door, I came home with loads of boss photos (and a black eye), and they started to send me all over the place. So I did loads of trips to different places in the UK as well as documenting the scene in places like Ibiza, Tokyo, Detroit and Berlin.
Kaos - Leeds
How did ‘going out’ differ from city to city?
Well, the further north you go the madder it gets. That’s still a good general benchmark for going out around the country on a Saturday night, though I’d say regional differences are more subtle these days.
Glasgow and Newcastle were always insane, Leeds often felt better dressed than a lot of other northern cities and the spirit of the northern soul scene felt like it lived on in a club like Golden down in Stoke.
In Bristol the club scene was heavily influenced by the music the city was producing and that affected a lot of the clubs. I did actually spend a lot of time in Bristol clubs in the 90s and whilst clubs like the Thekla and some of the other smaller clubs really took influence from the music that was being produced, there were also the big house and rave clubs that every other city had.
Revolution - Bristol
There used to be a great night called Revolution at The Lakota which was a big name DJ house club with a great music policy and a well-dressed crowd who were up for it. But then once a month they’d run an all-nighter and loads of people used to come in from South Wales, and you really noticed the difference.
They didn’t get as many chances to party so they made the most of it and the whole thing just went up a level and suddenly Bristol didn’t seem so laid back as it usually was.
What were people wearing in the different cities? Were there regional outfits?
I think the main differences were in the different scenes within the bigger club scene. Everywhere had their full-on rave clubs which meant white gloves and glow sticks and then the cooler raves were more into the whole baggy look.
It was all about the practicalities of dancing for six hours, so things got looser with sportswear, or tighter with Lycra. Then as the club scene moved into the older clubs that had existed for years, some of them got a bit better dressed.
So in Manchester, somewhere like The Hacienda would be baggy, but somewhere like Most Excellent had a smarter crowd. So there were these clubs around the country opening that were maybe a bit more discerning than the initial raves — clubs like Back II Basics in Leeds, Smile in Liverpool and Venus in Nottingham. Smaller and a bit more perfectly formed if you like, but still very much big party places.
Rezerection - Edinburgh
You mentioned before about a mad night at a club called Rezerection in Edinburgh. What was going on there?
That place was insane. It was on the edge of Edinburgh in some sort of showground and it was a big fenced off marquee affair with no alcohol on site, and I’ve never seen such a deranged crowd in all my life.
It was mostly a young crowd — too young at times. It was all white gloves and whistles with random folk in fancy dress — like a fella dressed up in a wetsuit with an inflatable shark under his arm.
Rezerection - Edinburgh
Where else stood out?
Judgement Day in Newcastle, in a hard-core ravers kind of way, and likewise, Bowlers in Manchester or the Hard Dock in Liverpool — not for the feint hearted by any means.
But my favourite clubs were smaller, better dressed and with a better music policy. I’d say one that got it all right was Back II Basics up in Leeds, though I’d say my favourite club of all time, in the UK anyway, was Voodoo in Liverpool.
This was at the time of the super-clubs, when Liverpool had Cream, one of the most important clubs of all time. And whilst I loved how Cream was putting Liverpool back on the map, in popular culture terms anyway, there was nothing better than finishing a shoot at Cream and then heading around the corner to Voodoo.
Voodoo - Liverpool
It was as much of a family vibe as you could get out of a techno club, ran by an amazing couple called Sam and Claire with incredible residents, ace guests and an understanding management. It was the complete opposite to what was going on at the time with the emergence of clubs as brands. There’s nothing wrong with the big clubs, and it’s great to be lost in a big crowd with a camera, but I always preferred the smaller affairs.
How did you go about actually taking the photos? Were you tactical with how you shot the clubs?
It was all about finding the right place. Using the flash, you didn’t just want to photograph someone against a wall, because it didn’t look very interesting. You had to be in the middle to get all the flashing lights and everything.
The people at the edge are usually just standing around, so you had to get involved. If you just walk into somewhere with a camera bag, people are going to notice you, but if you’re somewhere for a while, you can be part of it.
Later on in the early 90s there was a point when things got very much about stopping people and asking to take their photograph, and asking them what clothes they had on. They had a thing in MixMag where they’d be some question of the month, and I thought that was shit – I didn’t like doing that. At the time, I wanted to document things, I wanted to be a fly on the wall – I didn’t want to stop people.
Yeah, as soon as you ask someone to pose, you lose that candid thing. What sort of cameras were you using?
Most of the time it was a 35mm Nikon with some pretty cheap lenses. We’d use these flashes called Vivitar 283s which had three zones you could set depending on the distance you wanted to shoot.
A bit later, I started taking photos on a twin-lens medium format cameras with slide film and an off-camera flash.
At the time it seemed easy, as it was all I knew, but I’ve been back to nightclubs in recent years, and I just think, how did I do this?
Herbal Tea Party - Manchester
How long would you be there? Would you take photos all night?
It gets to the point where it gets too messy.
Was that a conscious decision – to show people in a decent light?
I wanted to show it for how it was, which is why I got fed up with it when it became people posing and wanting their picture taken in nightclubs. I wanted it to be real. I wasn’t trying to make anyone look great – but they were great. And also, I didn’t want to make people look horrible.
I like that whole thing of people being stars for the night. What I didn’t like was that cult of the DJ. You’d start going to nights, and everybody would be facing the DJ, but earlier on, it never felt like that. People were dancing everywhere you looked — everybody was the star for the night.
Heavenly Social - Nottingham
Were there other photographers around back then?
In the mid-90s there was suddenly a lot, but before then, I don’t remember anyone else doing it in Liverpool. I mean places like Erics were documented by Francesco Mellina and you had Tom Wood, shooting his Looking for Love photographs at the Chelsea Reach, but not so much on the rave scene.
Everything is constantly documented now. The late 80s and early 90s are probably the last period of time before everything was documented.
Every now and again an old photographer will find their pictures from 40 years ago, and everyone will be like, “Wow, look at these old pictures!” But I don’t think that will happen in the future. There’s just so much imagery of everything.
G-Love - Liverpool
I wonder with the states that people get in now, what it’s like with phones. Do people get up the next day to loads of photos of them from the night before? I do think sometimes, if there was camera phones in the 90s, would people have been more reserved?
Haha, good point. When did you stop photographing clubs?
When I got bored. And I guess I got bored when people started stopping me to ask for a photo. When they started to become conscious of the fact that they could appear in Mixmag and be famous for five minutes and it became more about that than being caught in the moment.
Cream - Liverpool
I also got older and moved away from the scene and my own music interests changed, so I moved on and I photographed different scenes.
At the time you were going out a lot shooting photos, did you think people would look back on it, or were you just doing it?
I don’t think at the age of 20 you ever think that you’re documenting stuff from the future. Those times were pretty amazing, and everything was new. It was something which had never happened before. Now we can look back and say that.
Universe - Bath
What are your thoughts on the nostalgia that surrounds that era?
Good luck to them, but it’s not for me. It’s weird really as the whole dance thing has never stopped, so it’s odd that people are doing all this revival thing for something that’s never needed to be rediscovered, because it never really went away.
Quadrant Park - Liverpool
You’re still very busy with photography stuff now, what are you up to at the moment?
Photographing and filming with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, doing commercial work with all kinds of organisations and documenting arts festivals and music festivals in all kinds of places. So I’m still documenting music and the scenes around it, it’s just a little bit more polite and with better hours.
Sounds good. As someone who’s worked doing photography for a while now, have you got any wise words you’d like to add here?
Well, if it’s music photography we’re talking about, don’t hang about with shit bands. Although these days with digital cameras, I’d say just photograph absolutely everybody.
With film, I used to have to choose what bands to shoot. Looking back on the first musical festival I shot in Liverpool, I just photographed the bands I thought sounded alright. I photographed The La’s, but I didn’t bother with The Stone Roses or Pulp. But now, there’s no excuse.

X-POSITION – ResurrXion Revealed With the X-Editors: Part 1
The X-Line is getting a major overhaul this spring, as Marvel launches a whole new crop of comics. The initiative, titled ResurrXion, will see the arrival of new flagship series like “X-Men Gold” and “X-Men Blue” as well as team books like “Generation X” and “Weapon X.” Additionally, a trio of characters will get their own ongoings: “Iceman,” “Jean Grey” and “Cable.” On top of all that, “All-New Wolverine” and “Old Man Logan” will continue slashing their way through villains with new storyarcs and — in “Old Man Logan’s” case — a new creative team.
This week in X-POSITION, the X-Men editors Mark Paniccia, Daniel Ketchum, Christina Harrington and Chris Robinson answer your questions about “X-Men Gold,” “Generation X” and “Jean Grey”!
CBR News: Welcome back to X-POSITION, X-Editors! It’s been a while and we’re glad to have you back. First up, we’ll start with a question about the “Uncanny” cast from Weslley.
While I’m excited about ResurrXion, I am disappointed that Psylocke and Archangel are nowhere to be seen after all the amazing character development both got in Cullen Bunn’s “Uncanny X-Men.” Will we see them anytime soon?
Mark Paniccia: First, let’s give Cullen a round of applause for the work he (props to editor Daniel Ketchum as well) put into the series and the craft he invested in these characters. Second, Psylocke and Archangel are very popular but we need just one more e-mail asking for their return before we can seriously consider anything. 😉
Christina Harrington: These are two of my favorite characters, especially after Cullen’s run on “Uncanny.” And after that great character development, I don’t think Archangel or Psylocke will stay off the table for long…
Daniel Ketchum: We have received so many e-mails and tweets about Psylocke and Archangel! Fear not: there is a concrete plan in place for the pair. You’ll hear about it very soon…
Next up, Ben has a Q about the larger mutant metaphor.
Will the X-Men still retain their civil rights roots? As a longtime X-Men fan, I think that the team’s best stories (“God Loves, Man Kills,” “Days of Future Past,” Grant Morrison’s “New X-Men”) aren’t really about big superhero brawls, but sociopolitical ideas involving race, religion, and sexuality… I just hope that even if they do go more “classic” superhero, that the message behind them won’t be lost. Will that thought continue, and which books is it most evident in?
Paniccia: Those ideas were baked into the X-Men’s DNA from the very beginning, Ben. They’re what make them the most relatable characters in the history of comics and we would never abandon that core concept. We do want to lean into the superhero of it all, the unique power sets, the big battles, the action…all those things that make comics exciting and fun.
Harrington: It’s the most X-Men thing of all, to me, to have these characters dive into contemporary issues and really explore them — with a more fantastical framing, of course. So of course those elements are going to be involved in these new stories — they wouldn’t be X-Men stories to me without them. I think you’re going to find stories of this type across the line — alongside some more traditional super hero tales, of course. We can do allegory…but we have to also do punching.
This time around, Anduinel gets the honor of asking this question.
Now that there are squads of students specifically training to be X-Men over in “Gen X,” what are the odds of getting “New X-Men” relaunch down the line? Between the Kyle/Yost run, the Utopia era, “Second Coming,” and “Schism,” those kids have got to be the most over-qualified student class in X-Men history by this point (and possibly the most disillusioned with the X-Men’s methods).
Chris Robinson: You’re gonna see every era of “X-Kids” revisited in the pages of “Gen X.” From Glob Herman to Hellion to Pixie all the way back to original “New Mutants” cast members.
Ketchum: Chances of a “New X-Men” relaunch are slim, but as Chris mentioned, those characters haven’t been forgotten and will be turning up regularly in the “X-Men” titles already on the slate. Surge and Nezhno make appearances as soon as “X-Men Prime.” The Stepford Cuckoos, Pixie and Graymalkin will show up in “Generation X.” And Anole, Rockslide and Armor turn up in the first arc of “X-Men Gold.” While they may not have a title of their own, they are still very much part of the fabric of the X-Universe.
Paniccia: And speaking of “Generation X” we have a little something special planned in “X-Men Blue.” It’s gonna be really freakin’ cool!
Let’s move on to the “X-Men Gold” portion of this week’s X-PO, with a question from Bernie.
Will Nightcrawler finally be a significant character and not just a fill-in one? Will he go back to his true, lovable, swashbuckling self we love him for?
Robinson: Yes!
Ketchum: “X-Men Gold”!
Paniccia: One of my favorite X-Men!!!
Maestroneto has a major question about one character’s costume.
Jokes about fashion sense aside, will Kitty ever get a unique costume again that isn’t based on a training suit? The last time was in the mid-’90s and I’m disappointed that her Excalibur-inspired costume from “GotG” didn’t make it to ResurrXion. Since Guggenheim’s pitch is that Kitty is all grown up, it’s a little bit weird that she looks about ready to join the New Mutants.
Ketchum: Is there really anything wrong with taking the Steve Jobs approach after years of wearing every color and accouterment under the sun?
“Uncanny X-Men” #149 interior art by Dave Cockrum, Josef Rubinstein and Don Warfield
Truth be told, we didn’t reinvent the wheel with Kitty for “X-Men Gold,” because that classic X-Men uniform really said it all: This is a return to form. Kitty is the quintessential X-Man, the student who rose through the ranks and has stared down every evil, and yet is perhaps still the most stalwart believer in Xavier’s dream. Could the Xavier School’s finest student really wear anything else?
Not to mention, remember when Kitty first tried to take on an individual costume, but Xavier made her change back to the training uniform because a unique look had to be “earned”? I LOVE the idea that Kitty took that restriction and then turned the rules on their head…and now owns that training uniform look. That’s a great message in itself, I think…
Paniccia: I echo Daniel’s sentiment. And [“X-Men Gold” writer Marc] Guggenheim’s vision for Kitty (both as a character and stylistically) comes from the heart. Which is, in my humble opinion, where the best X-Men stories come from.
And here’s a question from Purplevit about everyone’s favorite Ragin’ Cajun…
Gambit wasn’t a part of any ongoing for years and appeared only as guest star. Can we expect Gambit to join any teams in 2017?
Robinson: I think you’re gonna wanna see the cover to “X-Men Gold” #4, Purp…
Paniccia: And there’s some place else he could be popping in the summer. Shhhhh.
Now we’re in the “Generation X” portion of this week’s Q&A, with a question from madroxdupe.
Any plans for a reunion of sorts? I grew up on this book, and I have to say, I’m disappointed it’s not like the New Mutants relaunch from several years ago with the OG members coming back.
Paniccia: I’ll let Daniel speak to that but Christina Strain is writing an X-Book!!!!!!!!!!!! She is one of my favorite people in comics!
Ketchum: “Generation X” was actually the first series I followed from issue #1, so it holds a special place for me as well, madroxdupe! And you better believe that writer Christina Strain and I have talked about how important it is that this book be both the story of a new generation of mutants as well as the return of the original cast. Issue #1 actually opens on Jubilee and Chamber, and the reunions continue from there…
And here’s a question from The Big G about the student body.
We know “Gen X” will showcase the “Oddballs” of the X-Students, but how much spotlight will the students actually training to be X-Men get?
Ketchum: Did Anduinel put you up to asking this question, Big G? Ha.
“Generation X” writer Christina Strain and I were actually just on the phone yesterday talking about how 20 pages per issue just aren’t enough. We would love to give lots of screentime to all of the kids! But with a main cast of relatively new characters who have stories of their own to be told, we probably won’t be able to devote too much time to those students we’re already pretty well-acquainted with. But we promise to do our best to not let them languish in the gutters!
Paniccia: Have I mentioned that Christina Strain is one of my favorite people in comics.
And we close this week with a question focusing on “Jean Grey” from Chandler.
I really miss Emma Frost. Specifically, I miss the interactions between young Jean and Emma…even the Cuckoos. I believe Emma was able to push Jean to try new things making her more than she had ever been before, with exception of the Phoenix Force. Are there any plans to have Jean interact with a Emma or the Cuckoos?
Ketchum: Has everyone read the end of “Inhumans vs. X-Men”? Without giving anything away, that series leaves Emma in a very different place than she’s been for the past few years. Needless to say, there are big plans for Emma. I wouldn’t rule out a run-in between Emma and Jean, but Emma has some bigger fish to fry in the immediate future…
Paniccia: Emma has such a rich history with the X-Men that it’s hard to imagine a world without her. There is something sizzling in the kitchen. You’ll hear about it soon.
Special thanks to Mark Paniccia, Daniel Ketchum, Chris Robinson and Christina Harrington for taking on this qeek’s questions! This two-part X-PO will conclude next week with more ResurrXion talk.
