Just want y'all to know I am thinking about Ashley Graham one day giving a moving speech at an event (maybe a BSAA thing, maybe a Tera Save or equivalent) talking about the importance of fighting bioterrorism and talking about her own experiences with it for the first time publically.
She is not a gifted orater by nature. She practiced a lot, she spent a lot of time planning it and getting assistance from speech writers to help her write it (because she cares so much about making sure it has the right impact/she is conveying the meaning she wants to say). So many hours practicing. It is clear she is nervous and she stumbles over it, especially the parts that are emotional (maybe she is speaking about some current event, or perhaps this is some kind of fundraising or awareness press event). The parts about Spain are hard for her to get through because she is doing her best to make sure people understand how dangerous/how important it is to support anti-bioterroism efforts.
But even though it is not as polished as Ashley wanted it to be, it is a damn good speech. Because she is honest and passionate and she clearly means every word she says. When she is done, she gets thunderous applause. That almost sends her into tears again.
This is what starts her anti-bioterrorism career. She tackles more of the political side as a great spokesperson. She continues on to become involved in multiple organizations. Maybe she even ends up in congress on a special committee.
#I am making ashley a figurehead in anti bioterrorism circles#i think it is fanon that she becomes an agent but I like her doing more of the organizational/political stuff more#(because she is already comfortable with the politics stuff thanks to her dad's career-- especially because I am making her hang out at the#white house/withdraw from college for a semester or two after RE4#because Spain was absolutely a life altering event for her#and she needs/deserves some time to process#and honestly I headcanon that Ashley never really new what she was going to do with her life#she was just getting a generic major either business or polysci that would appease her dad/the world#but it didn’t super motivate her... but after Spain? she realizes she wants to help people like Leon)#ashley meets Claire Redfield doing this#which is how she meets Chris#and only then does she realize that they all know Leon later when Leon shows up talking shit to the redfields#ashley graham#resident evil#re stuff#resident evil 4#re4#re4r#resident evil 4 remaks

Hello! I have a situation where becoming blinded is brought up, and one of my characters, who's sighted, says (in the narration) that she can't bear the thought of having her senses stripped away from her because she would feel helpless. Now, I know that obviously blind people aren't helpless, and my character knows this and says this. She goes on to 'say' (still in narration) that she knows blind people aren't helpless and that if she was blinded she would eventually adapt. (1/2)
(2/2) I really don't want to come across as saying that being blind means you're helpless, and I also want to show that having her senses removed is something she is afraid of. Can I do both? Right now I have her say explicitly that she doesn't think blind people are helpless, and it's the helplessness that would come with being blinded (temporarily) that scares her. But she knows that she would adapt because she'd have to. [End of ask]
Hi nonnie. I think this is a good question because it can be scary to think about having something you’re used to taken away from you.
You mentioned your character knows she would be able to adapt, which is much more important than people realize. Adapting isn’t only getting used to being blind. It is skills training. It is adjusting how you do everyday tasks. It is memorization, learning to rely on other senses, and becoming comfortable with interacting with the world differently.
This reminds of the post about casting blind actors and how blind people can do things temporarily that blinded sighted people cannot. Covering a sighted actors eyes is absolutely not the same as having a blind actor. Because blind actors can do a lot more with less difficulty. Here is the link if you are interested.
If you want to avoid negative connotations, I think you’re on the right track. However, remember that your character can go blind at any time. She could lose some sight due to an illness, older age, or even an accident at her workplace. For non-blind characters, blindness is still a possibility in the future. Keep that in mind.
You could also highlight fear of being blinded by someone else (such as being blindfolded by the antagonists) rather than being blind in general. You could also show that the lack of adaptation is the issue that brings up fear of helplessness rather than blindness itself.
Blind people know that adapting takes time. Even people who aren’t totally blind May have some fears to address because blindness is not always stagnant and can get worse due to illness or age. However, there is a line. Non-blind people often fear blindness because of lack of awareness and that causes them to have inappropriate emotional reactions toward us, such as unwanted pity. On that note, here is a survey measuring awareness of glaucoma in 1 thousand people from Australia, France, Germany, Spain, and the United States (5 thousand in total). According to the survey, 85% of respondents stated they feared losing vision more than they feared losing any other sense. I did a little more research and blindness is a common fear for people in many countries.
I will also point out that being temporarily blinded means your character would not need to deal with continual discrimination or accessibility issues, unlike actual blind people.
I would suggest having at least two blind people in the story, even if they are small roles. Showing happy blind characters living their lives would help readers understand that blindness is not the life-ending event they may have been taught it is. If for some reason you don’t want to or can’t include blind characters, maybe it would be best to remove or alter this part to make it easier for yourself and less vulnerable to being misconstrued by readers. Although it might be interesting to have a character with this fear meeting an actual blind person in the story.
I also suggest getting a blind beta reader using this blog or @sensitivityreaders
I hope this helps. Feel free to message me if you need anything else.

Do you think Elizabeth might have ever married Philip, and if so what kind of marital relationship do you think they might have had? Their relationship was much more complex than people believe it to be.
Hello!
Maybe she might have if something huge had happened altering the course of events and/or making her situation absolutely dire, like French invasion on the eve of her coronation. Or possibly if Philip were present in England on Mary’s death and following months, and had made his suit himself, Elizabeth would have had a hard time to reject him, his presence alone in her country being a pressure on her. Other than that, I’m afraid, no, I don’t see her doing so.
It’s important to remember that Elizabeth could marry Philip only on his conditions, the main of which were:
Elizabeth must convert to Catholicism ( you should satisfy yourself that the Queen will profess the same religion as I do, which is the same that I shall ever hold; She will have to obtain secret absolution from the Pope and the necessary dispensation so that when I marry her she will be a Catholic, which she has not hitherto been)
no changes in religion are made and England remains Catholic (she will persevere in the same and maintain and uphold it in the country, and with this end will do all that may appear necessary to me; if this change is made all idea of my marriage with her must be broken off, and if she has any thoughts of the marriage this may be efficacious).
Honestly, I can’t imagine Elizabeth consenting to this but without it there would be no marriage (Philip had made that plain) and I don’t believe she ever seriously considered it. She was raised as a protestant, in her eyes her religion wasn’t any inferior to that of Philip, and pope was no authority to her to grant absolutions and dispensations, to decide whether she has rights to rule or not. Her supporters were protestants (moreover, nearly all of her confidants were protestants as Feria noticed “I see her inclined to govern through the men who are believed to be heretics and I am told that all the women around her definitely are”), connections with whom she had cultivated through the years and who had put their hopes on her. To marry Philip would mean, well, to betray and alienate them, not at all a wise thing to do, even if you refuse her religious sentiments. Besides, if pope was the one to enable her to rule (the awkward moment when papacy is sacrificing the validity of marriage of Catherine of Aragon upon which it had insisted for decades in the name of future of Catholic Europe, hehe) he also could deny her that in case if something went astray and she “misbehaved”. Or what one pope decides, other can cancel. Of course, Philip could provide powerful back for her but … Such a conversion would have made Elizabeth more dependent on papacy’s verdict and Philip than Mary ever was.
Another complication is that there is a small chance that such a match would have pleased the English. Most certainly it would have caused major problems in Elizabeth’s relationships with protestants, but I don’t think Catholics would have been much happier either. Philip was not exactly a popular figure in England at the time, many accused him of abandoning Mary and involving England in his wars with France which resulted in loss of Calais. Besides, I don’t think they, as well as protestants, would gladly approve Elizabeth marrying her deceased sister’s widower, dispensation or not. Sure, Feria and subsequent Spanish ambassadors would say that the English Catholics looked at Philip as a saviour, but, firstly, they hardly inquired into opinions of all of them, and secondly, and most importantly, when Feria was trying to push forward the idea of marriage during the winter of 1558/1559, the lack of enthusiasm on English side, protestant or catholic, was apparent.
And then there were Elizabeth’s own misgivings about marriage in general. Her anti-marriage statements throughout her life are too intense to ignore them.
Having said that, my AU musings and a ton of speculations under the cut
Now, let’s imagine, as I mentioned at the beginning, that sometime around January or February of 1559 Henry II of France attacks England on behalf of his daughter-in-law Mary Stuart and Philip with his forces in the Netherlands defeats the French, thus saving Elizabeth (again) and her country. Philip’s standing among the English grows, and Elizabeth, seeing immediate danger from the French, changes her mind and accepts his proposal. Or Philip returns to England in March of 1558 (as he planned to do, btw), stays there, personally ensuring that Mary names Elizabeth as her successor, and after Mary’s death still present in England makes proposal to Elizabeth personally, somehow winning the English to his cause. And notwithstanding with all previously described difficulties, Elizabeth is so cornered by Philip that she agrees to marry him. What then? It’s really hard to tell but I don’t think such a marriage would bring great personal happiness to either of them. Adult Elizabeth had trust issues, developed, more than anything, I believe, due to her experiences under Edward and Mary. Moreover, one of the reasons for her falling in love with Robert Dudley could have been the fact that they already had pre-history together, they knew each other from childhood. True, Philip wasn’t a complete stranger either, they had met and Elizabeth had a chance to observe him (what is more than can be said about her other foreign suitors, except Alençon ), but, in my opinion, Philip was too powerful figure for Elizabeth to trust him. That could be remedied if they had actually settled to live together permanently and get to know each other better, but that was not the thing Philip was prepared to do. After the wedding he intended to return to Spain where his presence was required, staying in England only as long as to bequeath an heir, or not staying if it took too long, as he revealed to Feria:
“because of the great and extreme necessity that exists for me to return to Spain I have resolved that, even if the marriage takes place and I go to England to take care of necessary business… I will not stay there, even if the queen should not be pregnant, because she is young enough to wait for my return to that kingdom to conceive others”
(It’s possible that baby making with Elizabeth could alter his plans though, but, even in that case, he would travel to Spain and back all the same, and only periodically be with Elizabeth.) On the other hand, of course, his absence could fit to Elizabeth quite well, at least she shouldn’t be worried that he would usurp her power in England. Also, much would have depended on having children which would have bonded them further together and Elizabeth not dying from childbirth. Historically they both demonstrated an ability to persevere in the face of enormous difficulties, and maybe once married and accepting that they needed each other, they might have clung to each other till the end, whatever it might have been. And a part of me would like to see how Philip would prove “I love so much”, hehe. But for England this scenario almost certainly would mean its inclusion in Habsburg empire and the victory of Catholicism.
HOWEVER. I think Elizabeth and Philip actually had a chance to build a happy marriage if it had occurred under the right circumstances. Imo, the best time for the marriage between them was in 1545, after the death of Philip’s first wife Maria Manuela, when Henry proposed Elizabeth to Charles V as a bride for Philip. Yes, Elizabeth was only 12 at the time (Philip was 18), and it would have taken several years before they could have started to live as a husband and a wife, but I prefer to see Elizabeth in Spain after Henry’s death, rather than in one household with Thomas Seymour. Besides, Elizabeth was a bright child, a quick learner without formed religious views which would please the Spanish. Honestly, teenage Elizabeth becoming a wife of Philip and going to live to Spain, is one of my favourites AUs, and I would love to read a fanfic about it. Although, the problem in this scenario is that I can’t imagine why Charles V should decide that it’s a good idea to wed his son and heir to the person whom his church had labeled as a bastard. :)
In case you are interested in fics about Elizabeth/Philip, there’s this long, unfinished AU with OOC moments (particularly one) and possibly over romantic in places which nevertheless is dear to me.
And you are right - their relationship was more complex than people believe. I am fascinated by their ally-enemy dynamics (which dominated the second half of 16th century Western Europe), and the irony in their story, and I love to research them.
Thank you for asking!

Richard Chamberlain: Beyond Romance
For Richard Chamberlain, the last few years have been a time of tremendous personal and professional growth. "A time of questioning old assumptions, of pursuing various courses aimed at an expansion of awareness, of opening up as I’ve come to like myself better," the actors say between takes of "The Thorn Birds" at Burbank Studios in Hollywood. He is in "age" makeup for filming of the final scenes in the nine-hour ABC mini-series based on Colleen McCullough’s best-selling novel, but the gravity lent him by a gray wig and latex wrinkles is belied by his boyish lankiness, clear, animated blue eyes and expressively rangy voice. In fact, it’s hard to believe he’s in his mid-40s.
Playing Father Ralph, the protagonist of "The Thorn Birds," is surely something Chamberlain could not have done comfortably without questioning some old assumptions.
"Father Ralph," he explains, "is a Catholic priest who’s sent from Ireland to Australia as a kind of punishment for having lost his temper and insulted a bishop. In Australia, he serves the owner of a giant sheep ranch, Mary Carson (Barbara Stanwyck). She engineers a situation that forces him to choose between receiving her estate on behalf of the Catholic Church, which would restore him to their good graces, or allowing it to go to the Cleary family, whose daughter, Meggie (Rachel Ward), he has fallen in love with. "Ralph," the actor summarizes, "is, in fact, torn between three incompatible loves. He is very taken by the power and glamour of the Church in Rome. He is deeply in love with Meggie. And he is deeply in love with God -he’s a priest with a genuine vocation."
As a boy growing up in Los Angeles, Chamberlain had gone to Presbyterian Sunday School, but he says, "That really didn’t take, and as an adult, I’ve never felt the urge to become part of an organized religion." As well, he admits to having had "some negative preconceptions about the priesthood and about the Catholic Church as an organizational structure." How, then, could he portray a priest with the kind of commitment and understanding necessary to involve an audience in his plight?
"We’ve been fortunate to have as our technical advisor a Jesuit named Father Sweeney," Chamberlain answers. "Father Sweeney just blew me away. He’s so -well, for real in his love of God and his wanting to open people to God’s love, which is his basic reason for being a priest.
"He set it up for me to spend a couple of days at a Jesuit novitiate in downtown Los Angeles. I got to speak to these young and not-so-young novice priests and watch them work: They pray and study and meditate in the morning and go out to work in the community in the afternoon -at the county jail and some really tough, low-down places. They bring hope to people who are really hopeless and not otherwise cared for in human terms. What the Jesuits were doing -they were the only order I observed -was profoundly spiritual and apparently very effective in the community."
While "The Thorn Birds" project has changed his concept of organized religion, it is not the first movie role to alter his perceptions and tastes. After filming "Shogun" for the hit TV series based on James Clavell’s novel, Chamberlain developed an appreciation for the Japanese lifestyle, and after returning from several months of shooting the epic mini-series in the Orient, he began to find much of Western domestic architecture oppressive. As a result, for more than two years now he has been drastically altering the interior of the ranch-style Beverly Hills bachelor house where he spends most of his time. (He also has an apartment in New York and a vacation hideaway in Hawaii.)
"The previous owners of my house had made various additions to the basic structure that really didn’t make a great deal of sense spatially," says Chamberlain. "However, what began as a minor job of renovation to accommodate the tokonma" -a flower- or scroll-decorated platform- "and a few other pieces I acquired in Japan became something much larger. It was: ‘Well, if I’m going to do this, I might as well do that, too- and that and THAT and THAT, as well.’"
Things eventually became so chaotic that the actor moved to the house next door, which just happened to be for rent, and from there supervised the continuing renovations. "A strange way to live, to put it mildly," he laughs. "But when everything’s finished, which will be soon, I’ll have an open, airy house that’s very much mine -it’s the most personal house I’ve ever lived in.
"I built an area in my office especially for painting," adds Chamberlain, who had studied art at Pomona College before scoring in student theatricals changed his career plans. "The problem has been to set up and take down every time I had the urge to paint, so I figured if I had a place where I could set up and leave stuff, I might get to it more often. Finding the time and the focus is a problem, though, as I’ve learned I can only spread myself so thin."
Actually, Chamberlain’s life has opened out so that it tends to accommodate more and more activities. As busy as ever on stage (last year he was Wild Bill Hickok in a new play called Fathers and Sons) and screen (the thriller Bells will be released soon) as on TV, he has also identified himself with a political issue for the first time.
"I’d never been directly approached about lending myself to anything political, except for one local candidate who I had to turn down because of scheduling conflicts," he says. "And I haven’t had the time to do the kind of research that I feel one should do before getting behind any particular movement or candidate. But then I recently went white-water rafting down the Tuolumne River through Yosemite. It’s a perfectly balanced river at the moment, with a certain amount of dams, a certain amount of water for agriculture and a certain amount of water for rafting or fishing. But now the city of San Francisco wants to put another dam on the river. I told the guys who ran the rafting trip, who are very ecologically minded, that if they wanted a spokesman, I’m willing. The only thing they’ve asked me to do so far is host a pro-Proposition 13 art sale in Los Angeles, which I did."
The conservationist Proposition 13 was defeated in the November 1982 election, despite support from the powerful Los Angeles Times. But Chamberlain is undaunted, offering himself up to "anybody who has a sensible plan for water management in California."
Travel is another means by which Chamberlain is branching out and reaching out. Of course, he has probably travelled in the line of duty as much as any contemporary actor. In addition to the Japanese sojourn for "Shogun," he has gone to Australia to shoot "The Last Wave" (but not "Thorn Birds," which was filmed in Hawaii and Simi Valley, California); to Spain for 2The Three Musketeers" and it’s sequel; to Italy for the TV film "The Count Of Monte Cristo," and to England for numerous film and TV assignments and the 1969 stage production of "Hamlet" that clinched his transformation from pretty boy of the "Dr. Kildare" TV series to serious actor.
But even in his private travels, he has rarely had the opportunity for the anonymous, in-depth study of another culture that he did last year when he went to South America. "A bunch of us -20-odd people, mostly from outside of show business, but all interested in feeling out a place on more than just a tourist level -went for six weeks," he relates. "We sometimes stayed overnight in monasteries, and I was able to enjoy, immediately, the kind of person-to-person contact that takes longer to establish when you’ve got to get past my public ‘identity.’
"By that, I mean both the qualities that people rightly or wrongly project onto me and the feeling on my part that I have to keep pumping energy into upholding some kind of public image or persona. In Lima," he laughs, "a photographer chased me around a hotel lobby trying to take my picture, but that was the only event of that kind in all the time in South America."
Professionally, Chamberlain has expanded his horizons by forming his own production company. The plan is for the company to produce and Chamberlain to act in a number of two-hour television movies for CBS. The first is to be "By Reason Of Insanity," a drama in which he will play a writer who murders his wife while in a state of mental incompetence, then recovers and has to deal with the consequences of his act.
"I wanted take the responsibility, at least in part," he explains, "of providing myself with material I found exciting to act and of having a bit to say about the actual production of it instead of being somewhat at the mercy of another producer. Then, practically speaking, I had the opportunity to do so because "Shogun" put me in a rather nice position. But I can’t point to a particular moment when I had an amazing insight and suddenly went out to be a producer. I rarely have gigantic breakthroughs -a slow, steady growth is more my process."
To a significant degree, Chamberlain attributes his recent growth to the teachings of Dr. William Brugh Joy, a physician turned holistic doctor who teaches at a retreat in Lucerne Valley, California. Chamberlain learned about Joy from a friend and spent two weeks at the retreat to acquaint himself with Joy’s precepts. There he learned of the doctor’s amazing story.
"He’d been a medical doctor with the absolute best training and a stupendous talent for his work," Chamberlain relates. "But all his life, he’d had certain sensitivities to other aspects of existence -spiritual things, things tat are not part of traditional medicine. He began to find he could feel people’s energy with his hands. He himself could transfer energy to people -be a kind of conduit of energy. He could relieve pain, for instance. The use of morphine went way down on his ward -mostly terminal cancer patients."
According to Chamberlain, Dr. Joy was eventually questioned about his unorthodox holistic methods in a staff meeting at the hospital with which he was affiliated. Opting for full disclosure when he could easily have skirted the subject, he received an ultimatum from his chief of staff: "If you wish to continue here, you must practice in the prescribed way." Joy decided to follow his own lights, but Chamberlain says that "he’s primarily a teacher now; he doesn’t do a lot of healing. He’s written a wonderful articulate book called Joy’s Way.
For Chamberlain, subscribing to some of Joy’s precepts does not necessarily preclude consulting practitioners -or even untraditional one, such as acupuncturists. In fact, Chamberlain numbers an acupuncturist among his friends and has even visited one, though he says it’s impossible to tell if the treatment was effective because he was not in excruciating pain, as were friends who have claimed to be helped.
Chamberlain’s eclecticism extends to the areas of diet and exercise. "I do a certain amount of exercise every day," he says, "because I don’t feel good otherwise. Sometimes I run, sometimes I play tennis or ride, sometimes I do callisthenics. I once took dance, so I know a lot of stretching exercises. Because I travel and live in hotels so much, I’ve figured out how to turn my room into a gym -do pull-ups on the door, lift chairs. I eat the usual American balanced diet: quite a lot more meat than most of my friends" -beef stew for lunch on the day of this interview- "plus vegetables, fruit, whole-grain bread and rice. Varied but not strict."
Chamberlain has probably acted in more period pieces than any of his American peers, and he admits that he, personally, has felt the pull of the more romantic eras of history. "But there’s an element of escapism in intense romanticism," he says. "I’m now more and more interested in the life around me. One reason I was attracted to "By Reason Of Insanity" is that it’s a contemporary story with a hero who’s not romantic in any way."
After "By Reason Of Insanity," Chamberlain hopes to produce and act in a TV movie with a contemporary setting but a hero that could be said to be romantic in his way -William Brugh Joy. "Because Brugh’s story is really an inner journey," he says, "dramatizing it has been rather difficult. But after several years’ struggle, we’re finally coming up with a wonderful script."
Is there not a sense of things coming full circle in Chamberlain playing the maverick Joy when his first fame as an actor came from his portrayal of the very conventional Dr. Kildare?
Chamberlain doesn’t think so. "The fact that they’re involved in the same profession doesn’t have a great deal of meaning for me," he says. A point well taken, for surely each is unique in his own way, and just as surely Richard Chamberlain is the man to appreciate that uniqueness and portray it.
