Sit up straight. Don’t sit like that, close your legs. Do you really think you need that, I think you’ve eaten enough. Don’t walk like that, it’s not very lady like. Take one button down on your shirt, you'll look more feminine. Take in your waist, show off your curves. You look so much prettier when you wear makeup. Maybe lose 10 pounds and you'll feel better. Wear a dress, it’s a formal occasion. Try shopping in the plus size section instead.
What you just read is what has been playing in my mind over and over again every time I look in a mirror, like a snap shot of my worst nightmares. Throughout the years these comments have developed from talking about weight, to talking about my appearances with and without makeup, to talking about what I was wearing and how it didn’t fit into their idea of femininity.
I'm tired of being told I'm not behaving enough like a "lady" or what should be done to my appearance to make me appear more feminine, or to adhere to their idea of what I should look like. I'm ready to burn my destructive double standards and ideas of what beauty should look like and celebrate myself for the woman I am.
In Carla Rice's article "Through the Mirror of Beauty Culture", she constructed a study that looked at young women's ideas and perceptions of themselves. She found that 90% of the girls saw themselves as over or under weight. 80% said they thought their chest was too big or too small. 60% said they believed that their skin was either too dark or too light and 100% have said they’ve removed their body hair. When I was reading this article, I was asking myself why is it that these young women think of themselves in such a negative way? Then I realized, I should be asking myself the same thing. What I've come to realize is that, if other women feel the way I do, why is it that not enough has been done to change the ideals of beauty in our society? Is it influenced by marketing campaigns looking for vulnerable young women to sell their products to, or perhaps the idealistic visons of beauty that are defined by their culture. In my opinion, it is a mix the medias influence on young women, the women we look up to in our lives, the standard that we compare ourselves to based on our culture and the double standards that are so evident in everyday life. Carla Rice suggests that rather than creating an image of what feminism and beauty should look like we should focus on the individualistic features of ourselves and celebrate our diversity.

Controlled Response is a video and found object art installation I produced in 2016. It's a video installation projected above a plinth, bearing 3 lipsticks with x-acto knife blades protruding from them. The video is of a woman, putting on pink lipstick using her iPhone selfie camera. Written in pink lipstick on the plinth, are the words, ‘If you have been conditioned to view the mediums of fashion and make-up artistry as trivial (along with the women who use these mediums), this automatic response is a testament to the very power these mediums hold: to control the subconscious perception of the viewer.’ It juxtaposes perceived frivolity, with a very real power—the perceived frivolity of women who engage with expressions like fashion and makeup, with the power of controlling the gaze through the curation of the appearance. Humans have been adorning themselves for time immemorial. It's a natural extension of our innate desire for expression. The idea of these things as frivolous is the conditioning of patriarchy--viewing all feminine energies as worthy of derision. Of course, this has partially been due to people getting tangled in patriarchal notions whilst working to (validly) critique the institution of media perpetuated beauty ideals. I strongly believe, however, in our collective power to dismantle the concept of women needing to match a socially constructed beauty ideal, and I believe we can do this while simultaneously honouring femininity in all of it's expressions. This is the moment in time where we will evolve our institutional critique of beauty culture to be free of misogynistic subtext.

Wearing 👏 makeup 👏 isn't 👏 the 👏 issue 👏.
Paying women who don't wear makeup less
Not hiring women who don't wear makeup
Both of these stemming from the belief that a woman who doesn't wear makeup is irresponsible and won't care about the quality of her work (conversely: women who wear "too much". Who is the judge? How much is "too much"?)
Extorting money from women who already make less than men by telling them they're ugly and flawed and will never succeed in life without [this] product
Psychologists diagnosing women with depression because they don't wear makeup (and historically institutionalising women for it)
Lowered self esteem and body image issues to the point of obsession (depression, anxiety, BDD, eating disorders, etc)
is the problem.
Continuing to wear makeup isn't a subversive feminist act, it's obedience.
Framing critical analysis of deeply ingrained social mores as judgement of the individuals who adhere to those mores due to social conditioning and shouting #nOtALlWoMeN does nothing but shut down a serious conversation about women's existence in a patriarchal society.... kind of like another movement we are all too familiar with.

Need a pick me up? I think we can all use a little smile, here is your daily dose.
Self confidence is key recognizing self worth. No matter our ethnicity, our sexuality, our gender we are all beautiful humans. Societies ideologies of beauty can be detrimental to a woman's image of themselves. Beauty is cannot be defined because we are all beautiful in our individualistic ways.
As quoted by Carla Rice
“To change our image driven, dominant conception of beauty, they argue instead of creating a feminist aesthetic- an inclusive theory of feminist beauty and sensory pleasure that incorporates the ugly”

You know what I’m wearing on my face today? Sunscreen, bronzer and lip balm. Okay, I’ve done my eyes a little, but still. One of the things I love about skin care and using Senegence makeup (which has skincare built in) is seeing the difference in my skin. Sure, six months ago I still would have gone out without makeup - because who cares what people think - but now I have the additional reason of being proud of my skin and wanting to show it off. I have some privilege here. I’ve always had pretty clear skin. I’ve never been discriminated against because of my skin, been side-eyed for not covering it up. I’d like to think that even if I did have issues with it, I would feel proud of seeing an improvement, but I really can’t say. I can also afford to experiment with products, which is a huge privilege. I add this because beauty culture idolises and idealises ‘good’ skin - skin that is clear, bright, firm, dewy and without hyperpigmentation. For most women this is unattainable, certainly not on a long term basis. Beauty culture tells us that this is desirable, and attainable if we just buy the next big thing in skin care so that they can have our 💸. It’s great to take care of your skin, but only to the point that works for you - both based on the natural state of your skin and your financial situation. I do a lot of work to be comfortable with the skin I’m in. Some of this is the external stuff - products, hydration, exercise, eating. But the vast proportion of it is the internal work - thinking about this stuff and challenging my own internalised biases - so I can just be me and comfortable with that as I move through the world. If you’re doing that too, I’m standing with you. It’s worth it, I promise. #theskinimin #beautyculture #feminism #thelipstickfeminist
