#SelfCareSunday with a short trip to Castlewood Canyon State Park in Colorado. 🌻 My hubby said he wanted to go somewhere this afternoon, and I guess I wasn’t totally prepared. It was a very beautiful drive, and it was the first time I’ve been to @castlewood.canyon even though I’ve lived in Colorado most of my life. Today was a cooler day than we had been having, and it was raining off and on. So once we got to the State Park,I realized I didn’t have a hoodie in the car, and I wore sandals. These days of self-isolation certainly inspire an element of retrospective contemplation. Especially when taking walks in a #beautifulcountryside, #astrangelyquietcountryside. The realisation being that this country side that completely engulfed, defined my childhood is now almost bereft of wildlife. As a kid I walked three miles to school and three miles home between hedgerows that were heaving with wildlife, across a forded river that was teaming with trout and stickleback, along the river valley that hosted clouds of multicoloured dragonflies, then through the woods with a cacophony of bird song. Then up past the tatty Cornish farms and back home. Mama Mia have we not slaughtered this planet in our pursuit of #materialwealth in our obsession with #materialpossessions Could these days offer us the possibility to review the choices we have made? The choices that have led to such a detachment from the devastation we #humanbeans have reaped upon the planet. Sorry to be morose but this is a reality, we are stampeding blindly brothers and sisters in what could be our spiritual university. A place of learning how best to work with each other and with #planetearths #flora and #fauna. An enigmatic and strangestrange contradiction in myself, being the designer and maker of super expensive luxury furniture aimed at the the wealthiest in our society. A small consolation is that we do at least try and ensure that all our timber is sourced from #managedforestry and that we use only #naturaloilfinishes No chemicals! trees are for life

I’m very lucky. I live barely 10 minutes away from Ashridge Estate, an ancient woodland and wildlife area of outstanding natural beauty that borders the Chiltern Hills in Hertfordshire. The 2,000 hectares of protected flora and fauna have been managed by the National Trust since 1926. It’s very much a working estate and Ashridge continues 3,000 year old traditions using livestock to help manage the diverse habitats found here. Foresters are regularly spotted felling trees as part of a protective programme, using the timber to ensure the ongoing health of these beautiful woods and meadows, maintaining and sustaining its ecosystems.

 Given the gorgeous weekend weather I decided on a Sunday afternoon walk. As you can imagine I wasn’t alone. ‘Everyman’ was here: 2-legged, 4-legged, black, white, all genders, young, old, even younger, even older; ramblers, cyclists, runners, riders on horseback or negotiating the bridleways and tracks on mobility buggies (quite scary that!). Sundresses, shorts, hijabis, saris, all were on display here so along with the natives (the herds of majestic fallow deer, precious woodland birds, bats and rare butterflies, not to mention the creatures I couldn’t spot), we made a fascinating, motley and happy company of misfits sharing the sunshine and woodlands together.

 On previous trips I’d noticed that low timber walls had been positioned around certain trees. Not really sure why and without paying too much attention, I’d assumed these barriers were simply to create an aesthetic, natural statement, something to catch the eye. It was only as I found myself the perfect spot to sit and enjoy my cup of tea and book that afternoon that I discovered why.

 Aaah, so that’s what this is... a natural fence built to protect and preserve the ancient foundations as the tread of heavy human footfall encroaches on the tree’s exposed and fragile roots. Supporting the roots, bolstering the base of the trunk, helping the tree to thrive, means the woodland’s ecosystems continue to flourish. Time, nature and a little human intervention are all working together to preserve these centuries’ old trees and so sustain life.

 If the roots are destroyed, the tree will die. If the tree dies, a habitat is lost. If habitat is lost, life is lost. And so it goes on...

 As l lay on the warm grassy earth by ‘my’ tree that Sunday afternoon, now wiser about fragile tree roots and protective natural fences, it was so clear to me how connected we all are. Thank you Ashridge Estate for reminding me how precious life is.
