Note to self #growaloha . We will be explaining why we chose Ulu in 2010 and continue to bring ecology of plants and animals in with kanaka. Being that , Kalo was up first due to laws 10 years prior being broken and needed a reminder of its existence, how I griw it, how my families different technique’s were used and varieties. As documentaries went on and we giggled as #temanalove ran around without other Kamalii. I contemplated on the idea my cousins would enjoy the task they ever so wanted once educated. The ulu would represent another and tasked by many for it was a fruit like kalo, that as healthy kanaka ; give the abundance , “an english term “ for kanaka. #homeofthemakaainana was to feed the strength to the #konohikirestoration and #mahiaikekumu. I had chosen an actual plant and pieces of #iewe to open and and close this initiative project, so that it may grow and be handed off to the community on their own pace. A curation study of many works , the thoughts and encouraged on the topic of “Sacred and Profane” by my aunty and black and white film photography professor #KapuLangraff and museum curator @miahjeffra , community organizer #evelynkanaeolores. Mum kept these photography equipment from college cause they said she had to take a hawaiian cultural degree at the college to teach…she literally interviewed family like everyone else who the degree. She didn’t care for it, like ke its a lifestyle our ohana teaches us…so then she had to make a vid on it in some #beta thing called #VHS in 1998. She took family photos…and then moved to LA, she uses the equipment for college to do trunk shows and PR for her DTLA @downtown_la @dtlaartsdistrict crew and events in Calif be ause…she taught Hawaiian at Queens college snd other places. Guess she not that old. Her toys still work. Looks fun. Mum gets paid for this stuff so its cool to learn and watch our crew learn. Its a Cousin collaborative. Guess the shop wasn’t ready, i woke up and mum was sewing. Shes designed the surface patterns all the way down to cutting, and Kaya can sew too. I have a feeling im going home to bikinis!! It was the first I seen my mom sew this much, its other than stitch my pukas in skate or farm clothes and sails. At dinner my aunt said my mums industrial and efficient, whatever that means. Cant wait to get home to see what happens. We still want more editors and creators but she sifts through it all. She lives in bikinis amd worked for amazing people Ive met.
