As 2018 is coming to an end it’s time to reflect on this amazing year for new music and artistry. KUCI is a diverse group of DJs and we are proud to represent all genres of music. I have finally put together our Top 10 albums of 2018 along with some honorable mentions towards the end accompanied by some lovely words written by our fellow DJs. We can’t wait for what 2019 brings for us and continue tuning in on kuci.org or 88.9 FM if you’re in the Orange County area. Have a safe and happy new year!
1. Mitski - Be The Cowboy
“Mitski Miyawaki’s powerhouse voice resonates with a haunting clarity on her stunning masterpiece Be the Cowboy. She creates entire worlds and characters out of pieces of herself, from paranoid, awkward women who yearn for traditionalism and some idealist version of what life or love should be (hello “Lonesome Love”), to cowgirls who can do it all on their own. From sorrowful to triumphant, Mitski colors the spaces in between from soul-bearing ballad “Geyser” to unforgettable dancing-alone-in-your-bedroom anthem “Nobody.” (Sophie Prettyman-Beauchamp)
“This album was so personal and raw and I also liked how the songs flowed well on this album.” (Heidi Barragan)
2. The Internet - Hive Mind
“I can't talk about this album without mentioning how mad I am at myself for missing the tour. Syd, Pat, Steve, Matt, and Chris, The Internet, are prominent figures of musical evolution; this speaks volumes and not just because they got their start with Odd Future, a hub of avid freeform artists. If you’re inclined to believe what I believe, Ego Death is a heartbreak album and Hive Mind is loaded with recovery anthems and passionate songs to share with your new partner who is not a rebound. Across the timeline, the sounds change from R&B and Hip-Hop to Funk and Soul; but what captures my attention the most, from Ego Death to Hive Mind, is the way a facade is casted aside. Hive Mind is just so sincere and therefore, perfectly fitting for being a part of my top three.” (Thorson Munoz)
“[This album] is a very funky album with heavy tones of R&B. The Internet does not disappoint with their funky sounds, which can be heard on “La Di Da”. Overall the album has powerful baselines, thanks to the amazing Steve Lacy, and groovy beats backed by Syd’s smooth vocals. It is hard to listen to this album and not dance along to it.” (Melissa Palma)
3. Kali Uchis - Isolation
“Colombian singer Kali Uchis’ long-awaited debut album is a high-production value journey into her uniquely sultry, dreamy world of R&B. The songstress’s silky voice pushes boundaries of various genres, from bossa-inspired intro “Body Language” to the Amy Winehouse-esque “Killer,” each track better and more of a banger than the last. Isolation features artists like The Internet guitarist Steve Lacy, British soul success Jorja Smith, and reggaeton icon Reykon. Uchis also recruited her friends Tyler, the Creator and legendary bassist Bootsy Collins for the hit single “After the Storm,” a follow-up to her and Tyler’s song “See You Again” from his 2017 album Flower Boy (supported by a stunningly whimsical music video by director Nadia Lee Cohen). The producer credits are just as stacked, including the likes of Thundercat, BROCKHAMPTON’s Romil Hemnani, Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, and Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn. Uchis proves herself as the new sound of pop, never veering from her originality that made her a Soundcloud sweetheart.” (Sophie Prettyman-Beauchamp)
4. Janelle Monae - Dirty Computer
“She’s such an intelligent creative weirdo and I LOVE HER. Not to mention her oozing femme POWER.” (Naseem Eskandari)
“About the moxie I mentioned earlier, this emotional rollercoaster has an abudnace of it and I cannot get enough! Cover to cover this album packs a punch, and as the visual companion--which brought me to tears--would suggest, this entire album is a celebration of deviant bodies and identities. This album contains the perfect ratio of soft and tender tracks and upbeat exciting ones so its no wonder why NPR named Dirty Computer their number one of 2018.” (Thorson Munoz)
5. Anderson .paak - Oxnard
“Sometimes artists, after huge successes, feel that they need to make music that sounds just like their previous work to gain the same traction, but really the true artists are the ones that stay honest and true to their creative ability - their sound moves through life with them.” (Naseem Eskandari)
“Anderson .Paak, to me, is responsible for every playlist I've ever built that revolves around driving in Los Angeles with the windows down, no matter the time of day. However, I don't drive a convertible, so instead I honored Venice and Malibu using my radio program, Detours. Not only am I excited to honor Oxnard as well, but Oxnard was built for driving; this is evident after listening to "Tints", the first release, and "Headlow". This album, just like Malibu, is masterful; the only difference is that Dr. Dre stepped out of the shadows and was a feature. Oxnard is beyond incredible and worthy of it's legendary features, Snoop Dog, Q-Tip, and Kadhja Bonet, to name a few. I'm really excited for what will likely be Anderson .Paak's next Grammy nomination.” (Thorson Munoz)
6. Blood Orange - Negro Swan
“AMAZING production, amazing narrative!!!!!!!” (Angel Cortez)
“Dev Hynes never fails to make master pieces of albums that narrate the experience of marginalized people in an oppressive and toxic environment. Hynes brings together artists as big as ASAP Rocky to smaller artists of equal talent such as Steve Lacey creating a beautiful medley of indie hip hop to soul and funk. Coupled with interviews, Hynes is able to make this album a personal experience for the listener. For me it always feels as though he is singing to me personally, something that not many artists are able to do.” (Kelsey Villacorte)
7. Kevin Krauter - Toss Up
“Toss Up has to be my personal #1 favorite album of 2018 by Kevin Krauter who began making music apart from lo-fi dream pop band Hoops in 2015. Toss Up was released this past summer and was the perfect album to listen to during warm summer nights and has carried through to the end of the year as a comforting reminder of those warm times during these cold nights. It has that dreamy, nostalgic feeling, something that you would listen to as you’re reflecting on the tender moments of your life. Krauter mixes vaporwave-esque sounds with sweet ballads with no one song sounding like the other.” (Kelsey Villacorte)
8. MGMT - Little Dark Age
“MGMT's come-back album is focused, synthy, and fresh. Without abandoning the dark undertones present in their older albums, this album reflects the band's personal growth and resonates with fans, old and new. Tracks like TSLAMP and Little dark Age are some of my favorites!” (Angelica Sheen)
“MGMT has maintained their status as an alternative staple and has since transformed their sound into something more experimental since their debut album Oracular Spectacular. MGMT did not disappoint and gave us an album that went from the weird wii-fit/dystopian vibes of She Works Out To Much to 80s dance of Me and Michael to another sweet ballad titled Hand It Over which is super reminiscent of the ending/title song of their second album Congratulations. MGMT never fails to write well thought out lyrics that all almost feel like their own story. All in all, they did not disappoint and this is exactly the kind of MGMT album I was hoping for after a 5 year hiatus.” (Kelsey Villacorte)
9. Ian Sweet - Crush Crusher
“Jilian Medford refines IAN SWEET’s sound and practices self-care on sophomore album Crush Crusher, her most intimate release yet. Medford rediscovers her identity as she considers how much of herself she has forgotten while preoccupying herself with being a guardian to others (she warbles “The sun built me to shade everybody” on “Holographic Jesus”). Ever poetic while satisfyingly straightforward, she notes that “It’s been too long since I let myself cry about something that wasn’t even sad” on the pummeling single “Spit.” She coos, squeaks, and screams in perfect, dissonant harmony over her guitar’s cathartically melancholic reverb. IAN SWEET remains a perfect contradiction that only grows sweeter.” (Sophie Prettyman-Beauchamp)
10. Parquet Courts - Wide Awake!
“This band's genius shows through with every new release. Wide Awake throws all of their influences together and expels energetic funk beats with poignant, dark, and brutal lyrics that are especially political. The juxtaposition of these themes with upbeat and optimistic instrumentals speaks to their compositional talent, making it a fan favorite. AND THEY USE COWBELLS.” (Angelica Sheen)
Honorable Mentions:
Glenn Crytzer Orchestra, "Ain't it Grand?"
This album couldn't have been better aimed at me if the band had come and asked me what I wanted to hear. A modern swing-style orchestra performing both classic tunes from the 1930s and modern pieces written in the big band style. The ensemble playing is tight, the solos just exactly right, and the production quality a lot sharper than any of the original Duke Ellington recordings. Top notch stuff. (Michael Payne)
The Vaccines - Combat Sports
"The Vaccines brought back the spirit and energy of their debut album but with a new twist when they released their 4th album early in 2018. Get pumped up with the "I Can't Quit" and "Nightclub" or settle down with "Maybe (The Luck of the Draw)" or "Young American". The Vaccines perfectly embody the sound and snark of the '70s and '80s artists of which their influenced while still creating a modern feel of the 2010's. My personal favorite off the album "Out on the Street" definitely a treat live! Over all Combat Sports is an excellent album and what we needed in 2018." (Stacey Brizuela)
Cobra Man - Toxic Planet
“Los Angeles local duo Cobra Man blows it out of the water with their sophomore album that carries the heart and groove of something you'd hear out of '84. It is indeed one of the best albums of the year because it utilizes one of the most underrated instruments in the game, the saxophone.” (Spartacus Avina)
Nu Guinea "Nu Guinea"
Heaven & Earth by Kamasi Washington is an album that’s loud and bold in both sound and vocals. A lot of the album often creates an ethereal effect with the heavy instrumentals ascending into a grand peak, most notably heard on “Street Fighter Mas”. The vocals on the album accompany the instrumentals in their same form, loud and climaxing. Listening to this album is like a rollercoaster with its thrilling jazz sounds. (Melissa Palma)
Drug Church - Cheer
Mac Miller - Swimming
“The tragic beauty of this album speaks for itself. Mac was such a raw and very real individual and it reflects in his music the way that many others cannot replicate. May he rest in peace - I hope the next life will be better for him.” (Naseem Eskandari)
Thank you to all the amazing DJs who submitted their Top 10 list of 2018! I am super glad to have been part of an amazing and diverse radio station for this past year and this is only a small piece of what our DJs music tastes are like here. I hope everyone has an incredible and safe New Years Eve and a happy 2019 :)

Connect GoPro to PC/Mac using GoPro Quik for Desktop. To connect GoPro camera to PC/Mac for photos and videos transferring, actually GoPro has its own software. That’s GoPro Quik. The free software is installed in the same way you install any app on the Mac - download the file and double-click to begin the installation process. The first step is to download and set up the Quick GoPro app; Then, use a USB to connect the GoPro camera to your Mac; Start the Quik App, and you come across the “import files” option. You can then import the photos using the app to your computer. NB: If you happen to experience the GoPro not connecting problem, then repeat the above steps. Download files from gopro to mac. Upload with SD Card Reader (Fastest Method) This is my favorite method because it is the fastest. From there you can drag & drop the files from your SD card to your computer. Method #3 - Automatically with Image Capture. Image Capture allows you to: Import files to a location of your choice; Delete files; View files before importing; Select the file(s) you want to Import and select Import, or Import All if you want to import everything. Use and SD card reader, it's the fastest way to do it and it gives you full access to your SD card. Trying to hook the camera up with a USB cable can be problematic, up to 50% slower and only gives you access to video and photo files, no lrv or thm files.

Episode 136 : Protection
"I'm a walking heart attack, looking for somebody to happen..."
- Boogieman
Still shut up in the house for the most part, which at least gives me a chance to really dig through my crates, vinyl and otherwise! This month's selection has some great recent records, some older underground favourites, and a mix segment I've been wanting to do for ages - figured this episode was as good a time as any!
Twitter : @airadam13
Twitch : @airadam13
Playlist/Notes
Mac Ayres : Shadows
If nothing else, this enforced time spent in the house has yielded some great musical discoveries. I heard this cut on a DJ Jazzy Jeff Twitch session, and bought it immediately as soon as I found out what it was! Mac Ayers is a singer/songwriter/instrumentalist from Long Island, and if he's already turning out material like this in his early 20s, I can only imagine what it'll be with more experience. This is a highlight on last year's "Juicebox" album, and one that those who enjoy the modern soul sound will almost certainly enjoy!
[DJ Premier] Prhyme : My Calling (Instrumental)
This beat from "Prhyme 2" is so, so good. DJ Premier continues to turn out fresh creations over thirty years since his debut, with more different styles than he's often given credit for. The pianos sound like falling rain, the low end is the solid ground, and everything else fits perfectly around them.
Ski Beatz & Stalley : Gentlemen's Quarterly
Smooth from the lyrics to Ski Beatz' sophisticated production, this is a cut I'd managed to forget about until I rediscovered it in my collection recently. Find it on the "Ski Beatz 24 Hour Karate School Presents Twilight" (snappy!) LP, if you can find a reasonably-priced copy!
LL Cool J ft. Keith Murray, Prodigy, Fat Joe, and Foxy Brown : I Shot Ya (Remix)
A classic from the mid-90s. LL brought in some of the hottest MCs of the time alongside a young Foxy Brown making her on-record debut for a Trackmasters-produced street banger. The "Mr. Smith" album is the source for this often-sampled gem.
O.C. & Organized Konfusion : You Won't Go Far
Unapologetic boom-bap from this all-NYC combination, taken from the second volume of the "New Jersey Drive" soundtrack. Of all the tracks on that release, it's the one that hews closest to the plot of the film itself, which itself makes it a standout in the world of 90s Hip-Hop/R&B soundtracks! OK self-produced this one, and rather than give each MC a verse each, they split each verse between the three of them for more of a tag-team feel.
Rise : Make Sure That We Win
Note: I got this wrong on the voiceover - this is a Beatminerz beat, not DJ Spinna. Spinna produced the excellent "Part of the Game" on the same EP.
Rise is an MC out of Brooklyn and the Demigodz crew, who has a knack for punchlines and quotables within a laid back style - he just seems puzzled by wack MCs most of the time! The Beatminerz provide the beat with the fuzzbox guitars moving all over the soundscape and the classic boom-bap drum style and some sub bass to give it the heft. DJ Evil Dee of Da Beatminerz rounds things out with his cuts for the hook. Grab this and a couple of other great tracks on the 2003 "The Intro..." EP.
Pete Rock : Air Smoove
"Petestrumentals 2" may not become the low-key icon that the first instalment did, but don't sleep on it - it's still Pete Rock on the beats, after all. I keep going back to it and finding myself enjoying tracks more and more, with this being a prime example.
Above The Law ft. 2Pac and Money B : Call It What U Want
I once nearly got into a fight (the other guy was heated) when I off-handedly mentioned that I remembered when 2Pac had been a dancer for Digital Underground - but it was true, and there was never any shame in it! Anyway, it was also with that crew that he made initial strides onto the mic, and after going solo himself, this was one of his first features, alongside Money B from DU. Above The Law's "Black Mafia Life", from which this is taken, is one of the most overlooked albums that could claim the accolade of "classic" when you listen to how it sounded and how early it was made - I strongly recommend that every listener seeks it out for an end-to-end hearing. It's striking to realise that of the four MCs on this cut, only two are still with us today - RIP 2Pac and KMG.
DJ Quik ft. Pharoahe Monch & K.K. : Murda 1 Case
An absolute stomper from Compton's finest, leading with the piano, keeping the drums hard but simple (kicks on 1 and 3 only, snares on 2 and 4), and three MCs going at it. On this clear standout on 2002's "Under Tha Influence", the underrated Quik holds his own against one of the best to pick up a mic, and shows the confidence and intelligence as a producer to know that this was the man to bring in for the closing verse.
De La Soul : Verbal Clap
Many years after their debut, De La remind you that they can get busy on a state-of-the-art thumping beat with no problem - in this case, a masterful creation by J Dilla, one of two on 2004's "The Grind Date". Dave's rhyme style here is extra raw and he dominates by sheer brute force, standing out even on an album where De La sound highly-motivated overall. If you don't yet know it, it's well worth your while to search it out and have a proper listen.
Mr. Scruff ft. Broke 'n' English : Listen Up
Manchester all the way on this track, with the DJ and producer Mr Scruff getting the drumline mad active with a nice bassline, and Strategy and DRS of Broke 'n' English bringing all the local flavour on the mic. This great cut is on the flip of the also-excellent "Nice Up The Function" 12", which is now available digitally - so no difficulty in finding a copy!
[The Neptunes] Busta Rhymes : Pass The Courvoisier, Part II (Instrumental)
A great party beat, one to get people moving even without Busta and Pharrell's vocals!
AZ : Take Care Of Me
From his very first LP, AZ was flowing over soul/R&B samples, so it wasn't a reach for him to make a track like this for "Aziatic", his fourth. Precision soundtracks it with a "no samples" approach which for the non-Bad Boy producers tended to be the move for the club/radio tracks, and it's aged fairly well. AZ's lyrics are definitely reflective of the time - cellphones are so unremarkable in 2020!
Krumb Snatcha ft. Boogieman : Oxygen
Krumb Snatcha is pretty much as rugged as it gets, but here he shows that while he can give you an underground street classic like "Closer To God", there's still time to have fun! This track from his second LP "Respect All, Fear None" isn't what you might expect from KS but I think he did a solid job here. Nottz' beat bumps and burbles with a solid low end, and the guest MC Boogieman, who's already collaborated with him previously, steals the show with a casually disrespectful closing verse - not a particularly technical one, but entertaining!
Mic Geronimo : Nothin' Move But The Money
This record was hated when it came out, of all the tracks in this section, it was the most blatant pander to the pop audience - after all, Puffy (now Diddy) was the producer! This was amplified by the fact that Queens' own Mic Geronimo was a darling of the underground scene after his excellent debut LP "The Natural", and this is a million miles away stylistically. "Vendetta" was a big change, and arguably a bit of a career killer because of it. Have a look at the video - every so often, Mic actually looks pretty uncomfortable!
Goodie Mob ft. Big Boi and Backbone : Get Rich To This
This was the next most derided track when it was released - if someone else had recorded it, it may have been received for what it was, but again, this was a serious sonic whiplash for anyone who had heard "Soul Food" or "Still Standing". It was still Organized Noize on production, still the same MCs (plus guests), but definitely not what people were expecting, by and large. I can't front though - I kind of liked it even then! The "World Party" LP is the source for this one.
[Kenny Dope] L Swift : Ride This (Instrumental)
Crispy clean drums and a nice guitar line are the highlights of this beat from a 2000 12" by one of the MCs from the incredible Natural Elements (now reformed, with L Swift as Swigga). The vocal version features A Butta from NE and the B-side is produced by Spinna, so well worth picking up if you see it!
Toots & The Maytals : Funky Kingston
We close the episode with the title track of the 1973 album by the reggae legend "Toots" Hibbert, who passed away this month at the age of 77, and his band. The throatiness of his delivery on this classic cut does bring to mind the American funk godfather James Brown, but the message and the groove is pure yard. It may be almost fifty years old now, but still moves a dancefloor with ease!
Please remember to support the artists you like! The purpose of putting the podcast out and providing the full tracklist is to try and give some light, so do use the songs on each episode as a starting point to search out more material. If you have Spotify in your country it's a great way to explore, but otherwise there's always Youtube and the like. Seeing your favourite artists live is the best way to put money in their pockets, and buy the vinyl/CDs/downloads of the stuff you like the most!
Check out this episode!

December 2017 - *PlayLi$t of the Month*
With only a few days remaining in 2017, I have spent the last few days tearing through as much new music as possible for this month’s playlist. The last few days alone proved to be stacked with new releases, which certainly made an impact on the final version of my list. As I continue to work on THE Rap Pundit’s list of the best rap songs of the year, please enjoy this super-sized edition of my PlayLi$t of the Month for December....
1. “Rivi” - Benny
https://soundcloud.com/gxfr/2-rivi-prod-by-daringer?in=gxfr/sets/benny-x-dj-green-lantern-butcher-on-steroids
(While his fellow Buffalo brethren and Griselda solider blessed the world with G.O.A.T just about 48 hours ago, Benny The Butcher had one of the hottest projects out with Butcher On Steroids. I’m glad that folks are starting to appreciate Benny, because he really is one of the finest writers of raw street tales I can recall since Beanie Sigel. “Rivi” is one of many standouts off the mixtape, but it’s that second verse that helped it land the #1 spot this month: “they tell us to stay in school, but nah, that don’t pay electric / it’s funny how we say we trap, just to make an exit.” Damn, Benny’s...got...BARS.)
2. “G.O.A.T.” - Conway
https://soundcloud.com/gxfr/01-g-o-a-t-produced-by-1?in=gxfr/sets/conway-goat-1
(Finally...the G.O.A.T. has arrived. Call it a mixtape, call it an album, call it whatever you want, but no matter how you look at it, Conway’s new project is as grimy as advertised. I’m not sure if it’s a stronger project than Conway’s previous two 2017 projects - Reject On Steroids & More Steroids - but that’s a testament to how prolific Con has been this year. The titular track makes for an attention grabbing intro, with Daringer providing Conway The Machine with sparse drums that serve to heighten anticipation for the ominous music to follow. And Con doesn’t disappoint. If you have never heard a song from anyone associated with Griselda Records, consider this cut the perfect intro to the resurgence of gritty hip-hop that has been coming out of upstate New York over the last few years.)
3. “Facts” - Royalz feat. Roc Marciano
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETKBFEbGzBI
(I don’t know where this track came from, or anything about Royalz’ production, but this thing is a straight thumper. Roc really sounds like he’s in the pocket on this one...notice who amazing he sounds over samples that lean on a reggae vibe? I’m still bumping Rosebudd’s Revenge on a regular basis, as you should.)
4. “Th3rd F” - Conway feat. Raekwon
https://soundcloud.com/gxfr/03-th3rd-f-featuring-raekwon?in=gxfr/sets/conway-goat-1
(Possibly the most Wu-esque non-Wu track I’ve ever heard. So damn raw and soulful Conway had to get someone from the Wu-Tang Clan to jump on board, and boy does Rae jump in. After you start to wonder, “oh no, is Rae just speaking on the outro to this one?”, he comes through with a verse that stands with any of his classics. Of all the grimy cuts on Grimiest Of All Time, this one is a contender for the grimiest.)
5. “Mandatory” - Conway feat. Royce Da 5′9
https://soundcloud.com/gxfr/08-mandatory-featuring-royce?in=gxfr/sets/conway-goat-1
(The whole G.O.A.T. project bangs, but when The Machine and Royce join forces, what follows is a bloodbath of bars. “Mandatory” is no different.)
6. “I Pray” - Fabolous & Jadakiss feat. Swizz Beatz
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKnwDRbu4Cw
(Not gonna lie...I was pretty disappointed by this Freddy Vs. Jason/Friday On Elm Street project. After a lengthy delay, it finally dropped, but long after Halloween, and long after Fab’s resurgence about two years ago. Both F-A-B-O and Jada have some strong moments on the tape, but most of the tracks lack the teeth of the project’s intro, or this moody gem. Probably the finest hook work on the whole tape, too - thanks Swizz.)
7. “The Delegation” - DaVillins feat. Roc Marciano, Rim, Rock Monsta, Foul Monday & Sean Price
https://soundcloud.com/da-villins/the-delegation
(This is a CRAZY collaboration that just dropped earlier today. Fans may recognize this from a snippet of Roc’s opening verse that was posted on IG last month. I originally thought it was a tease for Roc’s upcoming sequel to Rosebudd’s Revenge, but that remains to be seen. Wherever this track ends up, it’s tough as nails and belongs on this list.)
8. “Stir Fry” - Migos
https://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/migos-stir-fry/
(Pharrell blessed the Migos with this one. The unstoppable trio of Offset, Quavo and Takeoff sound as energized as ever, twisting some contagious flows over this bouncy and melodic instrumental that harkens back to some of The Neptunes’ finest work.)
9. “Been Down” - Nipsey Hustle feat. Swizz Beatz
http://uproxx.com/realtalk/nipsey-hussle-swizz-beats-been-down-surprise-single/
(It’s really starting to sound like Nipsey is preparing us for something special in early 2018, doesn’t it? Musically, I think Nipsey has grown a lot since he arrived on the seen. He and Swizz cruise along on this one, riding the horns of an instrumental that serves both east and west coast sensibilities. I’m really look forward to his Victory Lap album this Feb.)
10. “Slept To Death” - Statik Selektah feat. Curren$y & Cousin Stizz
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w11nuulV5GI
(Always glad to hear a new compilation from Statik Selektah. Curren$y and Cousin Stizz sound so slick over this instrumental, it’s hard to believe these guys aren’t all part of the same collective. Makes sense, because whatever Spitta or Stizz lack in lyrical complexity they make up for in making consistently good music.)
11. “Trump” - Conway
https://soundcloud.com/gxfr/02-trump-produced-by?in=gxfr/sets/conway-goat-1
(Fans knew that Alchemist would cook up something dark for Conway’s G.O.A.T. It seems that a lot of their work that was previously allocated to the album might now appear on Conway, Westside Gunn & Alc’s Hall & Nash 2 tape in the future. If any more of their collaborations sound like this one, then 2018 is going to be another year that belongs to Griselda..)
12. “You The Type” - Your Old Droog
https://soundcloud.com/adultswimsingles/your-old-droog
(I typically like to keep comedy and rap music separate...but Your Old Droog has some legit hilarious lines on this one. One of the few MC’s that can pen a funny line that’s also dope as hell, this is the Droog I have been missing. He’s still one of the best lyricists of the modern generation, go back and listen to his projects if you’re somehow still sleeping on Droog.)
13. “Only Difference” - Taylor Bennett & Bianca Shaw
https://www.fakeshoredrive.com/2017/12/taylor-bennett-bianca-shaw-connect-for-only-difference.html/
(It’s great to hear new bars from Chance The Rapper’s younger brother, because I know Taylor can spit! I’m less familiar with Bianca Shaw, but both of the young MC’s go in, and I am loving the vibe on this one.)
14. “Modern Slavery” - Travis Scott & Quavo
http://www.xxlmag.com/news/2017/12/quavo-travis-scott-huncho-jack-jack-huncho-album-stream/
(I didn’t expect much from this collaboration. I knew there would likely be a few catchy joints off of Trav & Quavo’s Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho project...but my gut told me this would be a lazy union of two of auto-tune’s finest auto-tuners, and little more than a collection of throwaways. Well...sometimes my gut is just *straight-up* stupid. The chemistry between these guys is immediately apparent. They flow their asses off, hooks are well constructed, and the production could not be more polished for a surprise tape like this. And kicking off the project with a dope soul sample? I did not expect that at all. Shame on me for doubting the knack for musicality that both of these artists possess.)
15. “Satriale’s - Benny feat. El Camino and Conway
https://shadyrecords.com/2017/11/27/listen-now-benny-x-dj-green-lantern-butcher-on-steroids/
(Three of Griselda’s mic assassins going in on one record, why not name it after the infamous Sopranos hangout? Take your pick of who takes this one, but I would have to say that not many are writing tight verses like The Butcher right now - and that includes the might Machine.)
16. “Two 16′s” - Z Money & ChaseTheMoney feat. Valee
https://soundcloud.com/user-421658681/two-16s-feat-valee
(This one dropped a few months back but it has been garnering considerable attention as of late. Low key, I have been a Z Money fan for a while, and I dig Valee too...but Valee’s flow on this one...the dude leaves the planet on “Two 16′s”. Take a listen and see for yourself - and remember the name Valee, because rumor has it he is now signed to G.O.O.D Music, which means even bigger things to follow....)
17. “Theme Music” - Fabolous & Jadakiss feat. Swizz Beatz
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gdWI4C3Am4
(Wow, busy month for Swizz, eh? I remember when I first heard this sample used on U-God’s “Bizarre”, and I’m glad it was put to good use again. While Fabolous is no Styles P., he sounds pretty good going back and forth with Jadakiss on this soulful standout off Friday On Elm Street.)
18. “Space Cadet” - Kollision (Quality Control album)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbBLJCYyo2E
(I don’t use the term “wavy” often...or ever...but if I did, I would use it to describe this song. The appropriately titled track has a spacey beat, and Kollision cruises over it in a way that I would describe as “casual Quavo”. I don’t know who you are Kollision but after hearing this flow, you just made yourself a fan. I look forward to hearing more from the previously off-the-radar Atlanta rapper.)

(Continuing with the trend of great rap music from upstate NY, leave Buffalo for a moment and head to Rochester to check out Rigz. Rigz can flat-out rap, and this joint is just a taste of how strong he is on his new album, I Got Samples.)
20. “Dear Eastside” - Kidz In The Hall

(What year is it again? No matter, the point is Kidz In The Hall are back!? Double-O and Naledge return to deliver a sound that could have easily dropped during the Native Tongue heyday. Just a beautiful homage to their home of Chicago, this is top down in the winter music. Welcome back, Kidz - and thanks for the new album!)
Merry Christmas and a happy & healthy holidays to all!! Salute.

Top 10 Street Fighter Pretty Boys(Playable)
I am an equal opportunity sort of guy. If I do a top 8 female list I will also do a list of men because I am sure my blog is not limited to one gender or sexual preference. So let’s get started!!!
Number 10: Fei Long
Fei Long is hot tempered and brash but has the skills to back up his impulsive nature. Based off Martial Arts Legend, Bruce Lee, Fei Long is a beast who also manages to make an other wise plain design work. Seriously you can cosplay as this guy if you have the body for it and spend a $100 dollars max.
It does not hurt that he goes topless, allowing all who like rippling abs and biceps to enjoy while he kicks in foes’ faces. So why so low on the list? Because he boring as ****!!!
Number 9: Rashid
He’s rich! Acrobatic! Charming! And has one of the sickest theme songs to date in the Street Fighter Franchise. Rashid is an awesome character out of the gate with a TON of personality. Someone ask him to donate some to Fei Long!
He is only this low because of how annoying fighting against him is and that stupid *** beard! DA HELL! His alternate costumes show that Rashid is a pretty good dresser, which is always a plus as a guy, on top of having you know…a personality and an income.
Number 8: Alex
If you like muscles but Abigail, Zangief and Hugo are far too buff then you will love Alex. A grappler character who while buff is still not steroid buff. Opting to go topless this New York native was a heart throb for quite a few in the Third Strike era since Remy was busy being an Edge Lord *****.
Why so low then? Because there are others on the list that just outshine him. That said, Alex is straight to the point and matter of fact about his views always hoping to become stronger, sort of like another character on this list.
Number 7: Ryu
Silent! Stoic! Strong! Those words pretty much capture what Ryu truly is! Preferring to let his fists do the talking, having a bloody intro that states that fact in Street Fighter 4, Ryu has the body of weight lifter but the persona of monk. A monk that will feed you your teeth and then say sorry after by taking you for a cookie. Hell! M.Bison/Vega, Akuma, Ken, Sakura, sometimes Chun Li, C.Viper, Gouken, Juni, Juli, and Rose all have their eyes on this guy…for very different reasons.
Ryu is only this low because he is BROKE AS **** and more prone to long walks at night…alone while he tries to figure out the path to true power. Dude is obsessed with battle and if Goku is any indication, family life is not meant for Ryu.
Number 6: Dudley
Dudley is the pinnacle of a gentleman! He will be pouring you tea one moment and the next moment KOing “Gutter Trash” who dare to sully your name. This English Boxer is the second boxer to Street Fighter but by far the classier and more refined of the two.
Never showing much skin, Dudley’s tailored clothing still show how well built he is for any encounter, whether in the ring, street or sheets with whom ever he desires. Also he is rich as hell, with a bad@$$ style, and look to him. Gold diggers rejoice! CALM YOURSELVES!!!! Have some dignity!!!
Number 5: Guy
So Guy is that one dude at school who is good at everything. He is the silent type, with quiet confidence and almost unshakable resolve! To add to that...he is a ninja! Dude has looks, skill, and he is a NINJA!!! Too bad he is such a freaking goodie two shoes.
Guy is that character who seems to believe in absolute justice and can do nothing wrong. I mean that is begging for a punch buuuuuuuut…he is a ninja, and not real.
Number 4: Gill
That thong, thong, thong, thong, thong, thong! If ever someone says Street Fighter objectifies women and not men, please show them the above pic. Gill only just beats out his brother Urien for a few simple reasons. Urien is bat s*** out of his mind! Gill is the EMPEROR of his organization, which means he wipes that toned butt of his with your money. And also…Gill is the closest street Fighter has ever had to a “god” (F*** out of here with that Oni talk).
That said, Gill is also the leader of a bloody cult/clandestine group, so dating him may result in some late nights with his “friends” singing around a campfire…with you inside it. I kid! I think…Hey on the plus side you know what you are working with since he wears less than most of the women in the Street Fighter Franchise.
Number 3: Vega
You thought Urien was crazy!!?!?! Well he is but while Urien hates people because he has a god complex, Vega hates anyone who he deems fugly! Which is worse!!??! Why even try to find out? This guy is pretty (Not handsome! He prefers pretty or beautiful!) knows it, with a bank account that would make most people swoon if the looks do not work (they will). He is also charming to no end buuuuuuut….
This fool is crazy!!!! Vega once killed a butler who told the spanish ninja that he was still an Adonis despite a minuscule scar you would need a microscope to see. Vega said “F*** that!” and killed the poor guy. Also he may spend more time admiring himself than you. So if you like them alluring, Vega is your guy, just do not touch his face or you know…just do not date a guy who is crazy, like these next two.
Number 2: Ken Masters
Ken is Vega if the latter was not nuts. This blonde karate master has the looks, the money and the morale compass that most would want in a guy, along with a healthy dose of self confidence. He knows he is bloody good at what he does and you are going to know it too, by way of him telling you or his fists doing so (in the ring of course). Ken is a good guy with the ability to talk smack and back it up while being a family man and CEO.
Intelligent, brave, handsome, rich, confident, and just! Ken has it all...alas Mr.Masters is such a catch he already has a family sooooooo…on to number one!!!
Number 1: Cody
Cody is not a bad boy. He is THE bad boy! He is that guy who gives zero f**** what you think about him. He encompasses the qualities of speaking his mind, standing his ground and never backing down. That said, despite his delinquent nature, Cody is a truly good guy at heart, who is simply brooding (gfto remy, no one likes you!). He has the disheveled good looks people tend to like, with enough muscle mass to be able to break through a concrete wall…with a rock.
He is flawed and he knows it, unlike many on this list, putting him on a different level. He makes no pretenses about himself and what you see for the most part is what you get. A troubled man with his own moral code.
If you want a guy who can defend you, most of the guys on this list can do that but Cody has done it, time and time again and even broke out of jail to save the world…and beat up people but who wants to sweat minor details. This is a knight in not so shining armor who will come through when the chips are down, once he can let off some steam.

REVIEWING THE CHARTS: 26th May 2019 (Tyler the Creator, Halsey, DJ Khaled)
Top 10
“I Don’t Care” by Ed Sheeran featuring Justin Bieber sits at the top spot for a second week, and it seems pretty stable, even if the song itself is pretty lazy.
Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus is also steady at the runner-up spot.
At number-three, Lewis Capaldi trumps Stormzy up one space with “Someone You Loved” thanks to the release of Capaldi’s probably dreadful album.
This of course means “Vossi Bop” by Stormzy has flailed down one spot to number-four.
“Hold Me While You Wait” by Lewis Capaldi gets a short album release boost up three positions to number-five.
Billie Eilish’s “bad guy” is still at number-six since last week.
MEDUZA’s “Piece of Your Heart” with Goodboys suffers thanks to Capaldi, down two spaces to number-seven.
As does the late Avicii’s posthumous release “SOS” featuring Aloe Blacc, down a spot to number-eight.
Also thanks to Lewis Capaldi’s album release, we have number-nine, which is up 19 spaces from last week after squandering in the top 40 for a while. It’s “Grace” by Lewis Capaldi, peaking this week and becoming his third top 10 hit in the UK. Great. I’m not all that upset though because this means we won’t be seeing any new Capaldi this week, since all three singles were the most popular songs and UK chart rules prevent any other songs from appearing on the chart if they’re not the big three.
Also entering the top 10 for the first time is the mediocre house track “All Day and Night” by Jax Jones and Martin Solveig – presenting EUROPA – featuring Madison Beer, up oe space to #10, becoming both EUROPA as a group act and Beer’s first ever Top 10, as well as Jax Jones’ fifth and Solveig’s second, his first since 2015.
Climbers
There’s not much at all here to talk about, neither will there be many fallers, however there are a handful. First of all, we have an unexpected and unwelcome rebound for “Giant” by Calvin Harris and Rag ‘n’ Bone Man up five spaces to #24. Also, thanks to some more exposure that was inspired by a Hardy Caprio cosign on “Guten Tag” (that also just entered the Top 20 this week, which is pretty epic), Digga D’s “No Diet” is up eight spots to #25. “Late Night Feelings” by Mark Ronson featuring Lykke Li is also up six positions to #33 off of the debut.
Fallers
Going in reverse order, at #38, we have “Homicide” by Logic featuring Eminem absolutely collapsing down 12 spaces to #38. Oof. Speaking of collapses thanks to a lack of streaming after its first two weeks, “Greaze Mode” by Skepta featuring Nafe Smallz couldn’t even have that second week down 13 to #35, but it’ll rebound due to the album release in a few weeks’ time. “Just You and I” by Tom Walker might have had a streaming cut down 15 spaces to #29, but I think a lot of that is genuinely wavering popularity.
Dropouts & Returning Entries
Out of the top 75 completely is “i’m so tired...” by LAUV and Troye Sivan from #37, mostly due to streaming cuts and dumb UK chart rules, which have also affected “Don’t Feel Like Crying” by Sigrid out from #30. Otherwise, “Falling like the Stars” by James Arthur thankfully falters after people realised the song is absolute trite without the video, and it’s out from #34 off of the debut. Sadly, “Boasty” by Wiley featuring Sean Paul, Stefflon Don and Idris Elba has also had streaming cuts and is out from #17, because it’s a hip-hop song, and they are effectively streaming-exclusive. Also out are two not premature losses, in fact, these are very expected, as they’ve been in the last half of the top 40 for a while, and today was a big week, so, I feel like we can safely say “Good riddance” to “Don’t Call Me Up” by Mabel out from #36, and “Swervin” by A Boogie wit da Hoodie featuring 6ix9ine out from #40; Mabel might rebound though. There are no returning entries this week.
NEW ARRIVALS
#39 – “3 Nights” – Dominic Fike
Produced by Capi – Peaked at #3 in Australia
Now for the first time in a while, maybe since MEDUZA, I’m intrigued by this new artist’s debut on the charts, but I’ve seen his name buzzing up for a while... he only has six songs yet thanks to this massive worldwide smash, has 10 million monthly listeners, yet he’s completely passed me by. His Spotify bio is a yellow heart emoji, which is the worst heart emoji. I’m disgusted. Of course, I’m kidding, but I have heard him pop up on Kevin Abstract’s recent solo record ARIZONA BABY and he’s been an indie pop star for a while now, I imagine, I just haven’t cared enough to check his EP out, I suppose. Nevertheless, this is his first ever Top 40 hit in the UK, and I love it. It starts pretty abruptly with a bouncy clap beat and some stringy guitar that you can hear in a lot of vaguely indie pop nowadays, except unlike a LAUV, Dominic Fike has a soulful albeit somewhat reminiscent of pop-punk voice that backs up the acoustics (which may be a bit too much in the front of the mix than I’d like), as the bassline’s fun, energetic groove just kicks and kicks, Fike keeps going on with a fine-tuned, double-tracked vocal performance until he breaks down on the second verse, where he starts yell-rapping and I honestly start to think there was an uncredited Trippie Redd guest verse that made this blow up. Like I said, though, Fike is much more refined than a Trippie Redd, who just kind of belts relentlessly without any care for how it works musically. The falsetto backing vocals are cute, and the plucking guitar becomes a real driving force for the rhythm, especially when the first verse is mostly bare. Whilst most artists in this lane of indie-pop/singer-songwriter guy who’s actually pretty manufactured and generic would let the instrumental breathe in an airy, cloudy mess of synth, Fike is all over it, not letting the instrumental get a second of breathing room before he explodes on the track. The content matter is interesting, as well, as it paints imagery of street lights that have been such a familiar sight for Fike over the months of having a relationship, those three nights representing three stages, from not caring to being absolutely smitten in love, before they just drift apart and there’s nothing to do about it, and Fike is frustrated that he can’t repair this shattered relationship. Oh, yeah, and:
And she sent me naked pictures from her neck down to her waist
I feel this downplays the romance and emotion here a bit, though. I’ve personally always found it more compelling when it’s the man admitting he sent naked pictures, as that’s more rough and emotionally revealing than the inverse.
She found pictures in her e-mail / I sent this bitch a picture of my d*** - Kanye West, “Runaway”
I still absolutely love this song though. I’d say check it out, but everyone has. I’m late to the party.
#37 – “Jealous” – DJ Khaled featuring Chris Brown, Lil Wayne and Big Sean
Produced by Tay Keith and Nova Wav – Peaked at #57 in the US
I feel I’ve gotten the wrong end of the stick here with these album cuts. With Tyler, the Creator instead of the fun introduction “IGOR’S THEME”, which is at #41, I get the much worse “I THINK” at #30. With DJ Khaled, instead of the beautiful Nipsey Hussle tribute “Higher” with John Legend at #43, I get Chris Brown. Thanks, I hate it. I don’t have to do any research, you know who these guys are, and I’m sure you don’t care, I’ll get through this quickly after turning on Private Session because my last.fm having Chris Brown scrobbles is a nightmare. Might as well list the insane amount of Top 40 hits these dudes have, DJ Khaled surprisingly having the least with five, with who I expected to have the least, Big Sean, racking up... also five, mostly because those sell-out features really pay off, Lil Wayne on the other hand having twenty-freaking-four, and Chris Brown trumping them all with about 38. What a delightful thought that is. Uh, so what’s happening here? DJ Khaled is pointless once again, as I doubt he had any element of involvement in this Tay Keith beat, who doesn’t even get to have his full producer tag play in the intro, which is insanely cluttered. His dated synth patterns and tones are still there with the rattling hi-hats, though, and there’s way too many Chris Brown on this song, because he sounds muddy and awful, with Auto-Tune that’d make a metalhead want to shoot a frog’s brains out. I like Lil Wayne’s verse, mostly because he actually has some well-constructed bars, but he drowns out into the chaotic pre-chorus and DJ Khaled ad-libs... and his flow is lacklustre, cut short by Chris Brown. Big Sean is fun and discusses Jhené Aiko, whilst interpolating the “In My Feelings” flow of all flows, but he also is cut short by Chris Brown. Please listen to CHVRCHES and stop collaborating with this pathetic abusive excuse for a human being. Seriously, why so much of that Chris Brown hook? Honestly, Big Sean can barely get a “Straight up” ad-lib in there. I hate this, actually, that hook has a falsetto Lil Wayne harmonising for some reason, and the bridge is multi-tracked with awful, low-fidelity chipmunk vocals, and yeah, this is awful, why did I consider this passable? I never want to hear this again, the instrumental’s so cluttered and over-polished so you can barely hear the vocalists except Chris Brown who is all over the place. DJ Khaled sounds like Quavo sometimes here, what is happening? I’m confused, who has played themselves? Why is Khaled just shouting over the outro? He’s supposed to only do this on the video skits, what the—
#36 – “Summer Days” – Martin Garrix, Macklemore and Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy
Produced by Martin Garrix – Peaked at #4 in Belgium
And the Cactus Award for What the Ever-loving Frick Did I Just Read? goes to... Martin Garrix, Patrick Stump and Macklemore on the same song. This is the whitest thing I think has ever been produced and released, but besides that, we should be questioning why these guys thought it was okay to collaborate, and that this was going to go unnoticed. Should I care? Isn’t this just a pop singer-rapper collaboration and the connection to Fall Out Boy is what’s making me overreact? I mean, Fall Out Boy is a shill now too, especially with that disgusting Lil Peep collaboration. It’s weird to see Macklemore out of his natural habitat of being only barely existent but good to know he’s hopped out of his shell to collaborate with some EDM doofus and I’m sure who was his favourite emo singer as a teen. This is Garrix’s tenth UK Top 40 hit, Macklemore’s eighth and third without Ryan Lewis and Patrick Stump’s fourth as a solo act, his first since 2007. Is it good? Well, no. It isn’t, really. Patrick Stump essentially whispers through the first verse, but his oddly nasal tone at least in the first verse doesn’t fit EDM production, and he’s yet to realise this, as while he’s more soulful and bassy afterwards, he immediately goes to a falsetto... and it gets better. A lot better – in fact, the distant acoustic guitar strumming (that may be too front in the mix once again for my liking) and cute fake finger-snaps make a pretty good foundation for a beat that both Stump and Macklemore perform pretty well on, especially since that rough electric guitar comes in for Macklemore to spit about his fascination and close bond with this woman but who cares, that drop is epic. That drop is insanely good, and the electric guitar build-up within Macklemore’s verse is subtle but excellent. This is actually more of a rock song than EDM, when I think about it, and the drop perfectly crafts the acoustic guitar strumming and cloudy synths with the guitar line, chopping up Stump’s vocals and leaving him recognisable, whilst still sounding warm and summery, mostly because of how slick the guitar is and the finger-snaps do allow for some kind of bounce and groove. The touches of strings in the second build-up is a nice additional touch, and I love when Stump cracks out of his falsetto briefly to signify that the drop is coming, and it is crashing hard. A better music critic would call this a trainwreck, a disaster on all fronts, but I like it for what it is. God, I’m so dumb.
#30 – “I THINK” – Tyler, the Creator featuring uncredited vocals from Solange
Produced by Tyler, the Creator – Peaked at #51 in the US
I knew Tyler’s hype was growing immensely but I didn’t expect an album bomb from Tyler on the Hot 100, and this sudden boost of popularity seems to come out of nowhere, especially since the last time he was this big he was having threesomes with a triceratops and stabbing Bruno Mars in his goddamn oesophagus. Nevertheless, Tyler’s back in the UK as Theresa May leaves, as are his songs, as he has a second but we won’t be talking about it for reasons explained later. This is “I THINK” from his most recent effort IGOR and while I’ve been a pretty long-term and semi-diehard Tyler, the Creator fan for a while, I’d argue IGOR may be one of his worst efforts yet, not because it’s bad but I’m incredibly indifferent on a lot of the songs, mostly because of a lack of substance from both the lyrics and the aimless instrumentals. This in particular is one of my least favourite songs, next to “GONE, GONE / THANK YOU” and “RUNNING OUT OF TIME” as pretty boring, dull listens, however it does differentiate itself from songs like that by being largely a hip house track, which is a genre you don’t see on charts anymore. This is Tyler’s first ever Top 40 hit in the UK and Solange’s second as a solo act as well, her first since 2008, and I don’t feel it that much as other tracks from the album. The groove is there, and the tribal house beat is fun, but Tyler’s Kanye-like droning delivery, with a bassline ripped from “Stronger” and fancy synths that cover Tyler’s nonexistent upper register that pitch-shifting can’t really fix or mask. Solange sounds beautiful here as well, but she’s relatively underused I feel, only having a chorus and refrain, but she’s very oddly mixed, as she’s much louder than Tyler for the most part, despite being a guest on the album, as the others are mostly quieter than Tyler due to the personal aspects of the album and how it wants to focus on Tyler, meaning it’s kind of inconsistent. The wonky 80s synths in the back-end of the track are very typical of Tyler and do add to the track in making it pretty fun, but it does get a bit too messy and cluttered in the final chorus, which is insanely catchy, may I add, and I do love the piano that ends the track, but overall, this feels very half-hearted. The aimless nature of the song is intentional, I’m sure, as it’s all about feeling that first spark of love and having no idea what’s going to come of it, but the pacing is dodgy here as it comes right after deeply saddened break-up song “EARFQUAKE”. Maybe I’m missing the point, but I’m not a fan of this one. Sorry.
#26 – “Nightmare” – Halsey
Produced by benny blanco, Cashmere Cat and Happy Perez – Peaked at #15 in the US and... #7 in Slovakia. Huh.
And now to ruin any potential credit given to me as a music critic, reviewer and enthusiast, especially right after that Tyler, the Creator review. Now, there’s a lot to hate about Halsey’s seventh UK Top 40 hit, trust me, I know that. The pointless prayer at the beginning that doesn’t add anything to the song or its content and is completely irrelevant, the abrupt drop into the belting chorus, the Billie Eilish rip-off in the first verse with the minimal, multi-tracked sing-rapping over a trap beat that she can’t flow over at all, especially in the second verse where she is sloppy as hell, the janky pre-chorus and the chorus as a whole being kind of pathetic and really short, the line “I’m no sweet dream, but a hell of a night” not working within the context of the song. However, let me give you this as a rebuttal. Those floaty, gliding guitars in the intro are absolutely beautiful and the prayer, whilst probably making more sense when the album comes out, is about giving the Lord her soul, essentially having to give men their all and get nothing back, which is implied by how it drops immediately to the rock-infused chorus, which attempts at being empowering at least but it is catchy as hell, especially with Halsey’s memorably raspy delivery. The sing-rapping works on the first verse, and is mostly about self-harm, actually, which is influenced by how men have lied to her, but it goes on a bit of a tangent that isn’t relevant to how the song is about empowering women, and that women don’t have to always smile for the camera, as mentioned in the pre-chorus. The main lyric as mentioned before makes sense now because like in the second verse, the media and/or G-Eazy is being dominant over her and she won’t stand for it, she won’t be patronised and the last line in the second verse exemplifies that with a line I really like:
I’m tired and angry, but somebody should be
Somebody SHOULD always be speaking out about society’s BS, and—wait, how the hell does this makes sense if it’s also about G-Eazy and/or break-ups in general? With this and “Bad at Love”, I’m actually really confused about Halsey’s songwriting. That song also had an obnoxious hook, huh. Hell, “Without Me” had all these problems as well... as did “Closer”, actually, and that’s not even her song. I stick by this being pretty okay though, especially by Halsey standards, even if it feels very mish-mash, and the distorted electric guitar being back in the mix does dampen the effectiveness of the chorus, which is still anthemic – or at least tries to be. Oh, yeah, and Halsey’s really attra—
#17 – “EARFQUAKE” – Tyler, the Creator featuring uncredited vocals from Playboi Carti, Charlie Wilson and Jessy Wilson
Produced by Tyler, the Creator – Peaked at #13 in the US
I love this song to death, it’s by far my favourite off of IGOR. As you can see by its US peak, however, this will probably be eligible for my best list by the end of the year and I’m planning in advance, it’s probably going to be very high on that list. I know this means I only give Tyler a negative write-up this episode, which saddens me too, but don’t worry, I’ll make up for it when December/January rolls around and it’s time for list season. This is Tyler’s second UK Top 40 hit, Carti’s first ever charting song in the UK (It surprised me too), as well as Jessy Wilson’s, and Charlie Wilson has a few but his discography page is messy as hell so I won’t try and count them, they’re all uncredited as well so that makes it harder. Imagine having more than three UK Top 40 hits as a solo act and you don’t get credit for any of them. Anyway, even though I can’t cover it...
Conclusion
Tyler, the Creator gets Best of the Week for “EARFQUAKE”, no contest. In fact, I’m hesitant to give “3 Nights” by Dominic Fike the Honourable Mention, just because “EARFQUAKE” is THAT good. Dishonourable Mention goes to Tyler, the Creator as well (Unfortunately), for the pretty dull “I THINK”, whilst Worst of the Week goes to DJ Khaled, Lil Wayne, Big Sean and Bowser Jr. for “Jealous”, what a trainwreck. Follow me on Twitter @cactusinthebank for more musical ramblings and Jonas Brothers content because that’s the Tweet they decided to push, and I’ll see you next week!

DAWN Richard (D∆WN ) - Redemption - Director’s Review
Love“Redemption (Intro)”
This song reminds me of something from the Lion King. I wouldn’t necessarily say the super theatrical part where Rafiki raises the newborn Simba to the rest of the Animal Kingdom, pretty much hailing him as the new King and heir to the throne of his father Mufasa. Rather, it seem as it is an overall celebratory piece, feasting collectively as equals, enjoying life. Like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeRck6JLhw8 .
This also reminds me of those celebratory dances in Africa, where it goes on through the night and the villagers feast upon a campfire on, similar to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34ennb3rhdI . This is where it’s near pitch black, and the only light is the roaring campfire from feast they have prepared.
This intro definitely seems like the celebration of a King and/or Queen, such as Dawn herself. Though this King and Queen’s celebration is also in aappreciation of their tribe in all that they’ve done, whether surviving a war such as the story through DAWN’s trilogy from GoldenHeart to your Redemption, or being great and monumental African folk in their existence, woven into the legacy, into the continuance of the beautiful African culture and lineage. This intro really makes you think of your roots, celebrating who you are, in your black excellence of just being you. You truly feel like you’re home in your motherland, and DAWN is shining ablaze, reflecting off upon your cocoa butter brown melanin skin, as the Sun God/Solar Deity whispers in your ear, “you are the one,” all of you.
“Love Under Lights”
One of my favorites of the album. It kind of reminds me of a fusion of “Calypso” and “Billie Jean” from Blackheart, and “Gleaux” from Goldenheart. DAWN is the queen of transitions and sequencing, and ‘Redemption’ is no different. This song flows perfectly from Redemption. “Redemption (Intro)” is the warning call that the celebration is starting soon, and “Love Under Lights” is the beginning of this massive celebration.
I love the narrative of this woman that DAWN sings about, like “Billie Jean” (as I mentioned about the songs it reminds me of a fusion of). Which reminds me of the visuals of “Billie Jean.” You can imagine some beautiful, free-spirited, rebellious (in her individualism), woman walking into LA streets (Whether Los Angeles, Louisiana, or any new city) and exploring this new place, the culture and what is has to offer. She spends a day exploring this mysterious city, shopping on Melrose or the streets of New Orleans, sitting in the park taking in the beautiful weather, nature, and people. She goes home to change into a new spunky outfit, then hits some nightclub where it’s pitch dark and you can’t see a single person. But... you get glimpses of pulsating disco lights, as everyone parties it up, enjoying the atmosphere. Maybe someone is dancing on her, or maybe she’s dancing by herself living off of the energy of the music and the collective energy of the high-on-life souls in the nightclub. I love how DAWN sings,
“she was elevated, she was a fan of the niggas that kept her motivated, she said she fuckin wit Drake, I said King Kendrick….I guess we’re just Kindred spirits. And I will never never lie to you, I think you are the truth, I think I’d like to do some things to you, our love is cooool…it’s coooool….”
You’re not sure if she’s singing about herself and to this woman directly, like a dialogue of a relationship, or if she’s a narrator, observing the woman. It keeps you guessing. It shows you how open DAWN is, in her music, in her perspective, and what world she lives in, encompassing everyone.
“Black Crimes”
This track reminds me of “Billie Jean x Dance.” The reason is reminds me of “Billie Jean x Dance” is because of the transition from “Love Under Lights.” The story and content of this song also reminds me of the story of “Billie Jean, ” and puts me in what I would imagine the visuals would be when I think of this song. As DAWN sings, “Love crimes, high cost, we’re doing time, we’re sentenced to life…,” doesn’t that remind you of the story of “Billie Jean,” more so a continuation of that song?
“I’m a Rollin stone, I really can’t stay I know I gave you pussy but das cause yo test look great I’m like an assassin, leave without a trace It’s the mess you love when you all in my face” “Billie Jean trill impaler like a fate I never stay too long on my own grade And if you’re lucky, 2023 Send that prenup to my new legal team No counting sheep up in a city full of thirsty hoes”
Doesn’t that sound like Love Crimes of High Cost? The beat kinda reminds me of her infectious, high-on-life track “Wake Up” as well, but more mellow. Though not exactly, because DAWN is always giving us something fresh and new. However, this track is similar to “Wake Up.” I am glad that this is similar to “Wake Up” because that’s my jam. So anything in some kind of vein of it, would immediately entice me. Around 3:01, she changes the flow of the track with some kinda sound effect on her voice, with the new apocalyptic-like alarm she introduced around 2:17. I love stuff like that because you don’t get bored with the track because the pace is not all the same.
On this album, instead of Dawn’s vocals being the lead of each track, it’s more so the production that sets the setting, that builds into the story of the lyrics that she sings. So the production is the beginning, middle, and end, more specifically: the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and exposition. Which is something artist rarely do. Another great track.
“Voices”
I love this track. I had been searching for the track DAWN had previewed, accompanied to her new work as a curator for Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim”.That song is everything. I searched all over the album to see if the track was there. This track, along with “Lilies” were the tracks I thought it was, but wasn’t. The beginning instrument playing is just EVERYTHING. It’s not over-the-top. Sometimes less is more, and in this case, it is definitely more. I’m not a musician, so I don’t know exactly what instrument it is, but it’s dope. All I have to say is, that brass instrument, the horn, whatever it is in the beginning, is dope. This is the goldmine of the track.
“LA” feat. Trombone Shorty
Dawn’s favorite track on the album, and one of mine. It almost took the title as my personal favorite, but there are too many dope tracks on the album for me to pick just one. The production of this track is everything, and as few lyrics as there are, they hit extremely hard. It’s like something my counselor said about me, “David doesn’t say much, but when he does, it has an impact.” The few lyrics Dawn sings on this track are so powerful:
"These LA streets are killing me" "It's wavy cause this shit don't matter MJ on the radio, so we blast that , MJ on the radio" "We thought we was above it all 'Cause the difference is Wayne was a hot boy"
To me this song is about, police brutality, being racial profiled, and just the struggle of being black in our current society. As powerful as the production is, this track puts you in a place to think about what she’s singing about. You think about it, but at the same time, you drown it out and sweep off to another dimension. The way this song starts out, I can’t even explain it to you. All I have to say is this song is like a true Symphony. This reminds me of something that could really be a hip hopera, and some musical on Broadway. As a play, it transitions into a scene where there is an uproar and outrage, with riots on the streets, as everyone is running everywhere, watching as some fellow blacks are killed. However, we are reminded that there is strength in numbers, as blacks are standing up against the police to protect their brothers and sisters, and some get away under the protection of their fellow black brothers and sisters. It’s like there’s some kind of martial law, such as this moment:
And this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGbGj82SQrE
The electric guitar string breakdown and the KEYBOARD SYNTH at 2:51-3:01, and then again around 3:37-4:11 is so epic! Especially the keyboard synth. But to me that’s the rising action, but the true golden moment of the track is the ending, the Trombone Solo with Trombone Shorty. It is absolutely EVERYTHING!
DAWN has said over time, how she likes to play with her voice with auto-tune and different elements of sound effects, which gives a unique flair tracks, such as this one. She has also mentioned how she’s heavily involved with production and how important production is, especially in telling of the story of a song, how it can stand alone. That Trombone solo at the end , Man… that is just something that we will never hear from mainstream artist these days. DAWN the QUEEN of what music truly is, from every different sector. This track is the definitive example of when music is Golden, in every spectrum. This a true collective effort, where not one thing is necessarily the lead, every piece is the lead. Though the Trombone is the strongest, every element in this song gets to shine.
“Interim (Interlude)”
DAWN and these interludes! Dawn is the artist that will make an interlude so ridiculously great that, it’s not just an interlude, it’s as strong, if not stronger than a full track. Her interludes will make you want a full track, so you will be mad at her for making it longer because you don’t want the epicness to end.
Interim reminds me of some ‘Darkness before Dawn’ like moment. Like when someone has died, a warrior has died, but you know you have to go on. Like something out of “Maleficent” or “The Huntsman: Winter’s War.” Like that falling action. It’s like the moment where you think everything is fine, and you’ve won. Then, suddenly one of the main characters, either the main character in the story everyone knows and loves, or you as a viewer, who has grown to love, is instantly killed. In that moment, this is what “Interim” gives me. Like that moment of betrayal, think of Ciara’s “Paint it Black.” Such as >> this moment . It also reminds me of “Tide” (The Paradox Effect)” a song exclusive to the Vinyl edition of Blackheart, which there’s a video of it on YouTube. Interim:
“Light, You stimulate sight , And make everything expand Can you see as I have, Can you truly love it, Under the light?”
Does that ring a bell with “Tide”?:
“Under your gaze, feel your pull, Every night my waves grow, Crushing past the rocky view.”
“Day moon - I am your tide, your light gives me life. Day moon, day moon.”
This songs perfectly transitions into “Renegades,” and I do mean perfectly! It sets the tone perfectly.
“Renegades”
The 1st single of the album, to replace what “Dance” was supposed to be. This song is song is a slightly dark, dance anthem. Not dark as in like negative emotions, just not bright, like some bubblegum-summer tune. It makes me think of some Urban (more black people) West Side Story, with more grit and grunge.
I see a scene late at night, where DAWN and a group of dancers are in black, short leather jackets, and jeans and you get a low-angle shot of DAWN and her dancers to introduce them at the beginning of the clip. The camera then tilts up from their feet to their knees, or a wide angle shot, that’s kind of close-up showing from the waist down of DAWN and her dancers. Next the camera zooms out to reveal the scenery of some European-like streets and village where there are vendors on the streets, and from building to building, it’s about enough space for two people to walk through the streets. This song to me is reminiscent of “DANCE.” It’s very Urban EDM to me, like when the synthesized keyboard comes in (the more EDM part), and then when the horn comes booming through with the bass underneath, with that beat dropping. It’s that ass shaking urban-sauce that we love and are accustomed to.
“Lazarus”
“I watched my soul rise up, Rise up, rise up” “My ignorance is a human thing My ascension is a spirit thing I can be both in the same I didn’t change… I became” “I watched my words rise up Rise up, rise up They slept on the rise up Rise up, rise up”
This is definitely the Redemption. It’s like that moment that you look back on your life. After all the turmoil, heartbreak, broken friendships and relationships, like flipping through your Senior yearbook, old Facebook photos, you realize who you were in those moments. The things you experienced, the mistakes you made, you realize who you were, and who you were makes you realize who you are. You smile at your quirky, individual self, and through your imperfections, you are still perfectly you. You have truly risen. This is one of my faves of the album.
“Tyrants”
“Tyrants” to me is the flip-side of “Lazarus.” “Lazarus” is the risen, realizing the good in the darkness, the embarrassing and awkward moments of your life. “Tyrants” is that song that you listen to late at night and think about a breakup or any struggles you’ve faced in your life. You get kind of sad and you may tear up, and realize all that you’ve went through. It’s that outer dimensional track. You ever had those moments and you say, “I wish I could be alone with me and my music?”, “If it could be me, my music, and space, and no one else... I’d be fine.” Okay, this is that song. Visualize an IMax theater, but just big enough to house you, and enough space for you to get a good look at the 360-view screen, that has a slideshow of videos and photos of your life. Though it’s not an actual I-Max theater, it’s a dimension displaying your life moments.
On the flip-side, another perspective is being in love or having a crush, and you want to just see that sparkle in that person’s eyes, you’re just admiring their glow. The lyrics:
“Lemme see your eyes I wanna see them glow I wanna see how far Your power goes They’ll all be scared Never understand Our power glows The light expands”
Also puts you in the mind of Tide: The Paradox Effect, in how DAWN is singing her narrative to the moon and how it gives her power and life,
“Day moon - I am your tide, your light gives me life. Day moon, day moon.”
This track can be taken so many different ways, and the narrative could be targeted to man, inanimate object, or other. “Tyrants” is a beautiful and simple track. It’s one of those late night walks, realizing the beauty of music, getting lost in your memories and the music. Another fave of the album.
“Vines (Interlude)” feat. PJ Morton
This song is reminds me of a track that you’d play when trying to do some kind of seductive dance for your lover. When I initially heard the song, I thought it was some issue, lost in translation of downloading the track, because dawn was stuttering in like slurred speech. But then I realized that this was for dramatic effect and emphasis of the track. It’s like where she sings, “water falling down,” like her body has went numb, and she’s just wet, lol. This is that kinda song where you’re like, lost in love. Like when you have so much of a crush, or are so in love and/or attracted to someone, that whenever they’re around, you get super awkward and are like a loss for words. Or maybe it’s through social media; you can’t even respond to their messages, it takes you a week to give a simple reply. But this song is much more sexual and seductive to me. This is definitely in the R&B lane, a nice seductive slow jam. People not into the EDM sound, probably could find themselves at home and in comfort of this song.
“Hey Nikki”
This is the part of the album, where things start to slow down, as the trilogy concludes. Hey Nikki is like an Ode to Janet Jackson, as DAWN sings,
“Hey Nikki I know you want to see me Do all the things that I do to him If you’re nasty..”
Remember Janet famously said, “Janet, Ms. Jackson if you’re nasty.” DAWN always has this narrative where’s she talking about this woman who is a sexual creature, comfortable with her body and her sexuality, who is always in power and in control, not falling under the spell of guys and their penis and their manipulation. Instead it’s like she’s this Praying Mantis or Black Widow, getting what she wants, using the guys for something like sex, making her money and moves, then moving on, just like those insects. Though it’s not saying the woman needs the guy or is always using them for sex, but she’s just not submissive to his wants (or needs), while succumbing to mediocrity by not meeting her needs. She’s a QUEEN and her title will not be of lesser value, because QUEEN is SHE. SHE is a ruler, a powerful being that demands respect and will builder her utopia.
“Hey Nikki” is a chill track that you’d probably listen to when you have nothing else better to do with your day, those bored moments. You’d probably chill to this track and write, sit and think, catch up on some intellectually stimulating articles online, or read a book.
“Sands”
“Sands” picks up perfect where “Hey Nikki” left off. Sands is one of those reflective tracks. It’s that moment that you put your whole life into perspective. It reminds me of that introspective, reflective nature of Blackheart tracks, like “Swim Free” (Minus the upper tempo dance beat) and “Projection”, and Goldenheart tracks like, “Ode to You” and self-titled “Goldenheart.”
DAWN sings reminiscently,
“Pictures on the wall, Remind me of all…the shit that we lost… It ain’t right, but that’s right.” “When we were young, we were dumb, we were too young… we were young…”
“We didn’t know that everything would come falling down, we didn’t know everything would come crashing down….”
We know better now, but we wish we had done better, seems to be the thought that comes to mind as DAWN sings this. We were simply “too young to understand.” We crash and burn, and that’s life. We wish we could’ve made better choices, but we must roll with the punches and accept that, we can’t change what has already happened. The song closes with fading echoes of DAWN chanting, as the grand piano takes leads and closes the chapter into the next interlude.
“Lilies (Interlude)”
I think this has to be my favorite track of the whole album, and it’s only an interlude. If you’re already a fan of DAWN you know her interludes are life. They are not to be overlooked. They are stronger as, and potentially stronger than most singles.
I love how this track transitions perfectly from “Sands.” It continues that Grand Piano, Dramatic, Phantom of the Opera instrumental, and brilliantly transcends into the EDM beat.
This track is rather interesting, it’s like a response to “Sands.” Like the redemption of “Sands.” She sings about her past, like Sands,
“Yellow lilies light..the house where we used to live where we used to go, when we was all wrong out there we watched them grow, like our lives, they grew everywhere And now it’s old and they’ve withered…” And her redeeming response, “And so I let ‘em go, let go…”
So though she made mistakes, when she was a kid playing in the sand, fumbling, all wrong out there, she bloomed and blossomed like a lily from all her mistakes. She grew, she got bigger and better, and she let her mistakes go. She let them stay in the past and wither away, as she evolved into the Queen that she is. No need to hold a grudge and regret the many times she tripped over her own two feet in the sand, over the war that she battled and the mistakes she made. It’s time to accept the light at the end of the tunnel, and walk into your shine. The grass is always greener on thee other side.
This song is that uplifting beautiful track that you listen to, to deal with your issues. Yell, scream, or what have you. Accept your issues and come out smiling because battle scars are things only warriors acquire. It’s because you’re human, but you’re also a warrior. God only puts on you what he knows you can handle. So be happy that he has accepted that you are powerful beyond measure and words. He has given you this mission, as his shining warrior.
It’s like the Marvel movies of Thor, he went through so much darkness and destruction, but through it all, he still remained because he had purpose, to change the world, for a brighter future.
“The Louvre”
The commencement. The weeping willow, saddened, violin strings at the beginning, a perfect opening to a commencement of the journey of this roller-coaster of the wars fought through this trilogy.
This song is truly beautiful. DAWN is all about full productions, very cinematic and theatrical. All of her songs sound like they could be apart of some epic Broadway show. That music that receives high honors from well-respected vets in all spectrums of music, but art overall. So like songwriters, people who write sheet music, screenwriters, music directors of symphony orchestra’s, she has that sort of quality. Everything she does it well thought out and intricate. Production and instruments are always the core of her music. They are always a balanced lead with her vocals. There are no 2nd fiddles in DAWN’s music, every part shares the limelight.
This song comes to mind as a commemorative song of the dead. Remembering the greatness of those who died before you, and all the beauty, peace, and happiness they brought to so many on their journey. This is a celebration of all their good, that is now engraved in history, that can now be told as a part of their legacy. Think in the mind of Lazarus:
“I watched my soul rise up,” “My ascension is a spirit thing.” This is the celebration of that spirit, the war it battled, and now it’s time to rise, rise over to the other side, where the grass is greener, and the sun always shines bright as the beauty it is, as DAWN coos “Ooh…you’re a work of art.”
Legacy never dies. DAWN can now take her bow. She is confident about the mark she’s left on this world with this magnifico heart trilogy. She will always be remembered. This song to me is that statue that you put up as a monument to celebrate the warrior’s legacy. You’re a work of art, you’ll always be remembered for your great efforts, we will never forget you. We will always look up to you and the greatness you have bestowed upon us, “Ooh… you work of art.” DAWN, you are ART.
“Valhalla (Outro)”
“Escape, run away with me Escape, to the open dreams Where rebels are the majority And my color isn’t minority Escape, ooh Escape, ooh”
There’s a fork and the road, and it’s your choice. What are you gonna do?
This reminds me of that moment at the end of some action flicks, such as Captain America: The Winter Soldier. After the war is won, with the losses that had to happen in order for the victory of the team takes place, it’s the bigger picture, of the betterment of humanity and the world outside of the hero.
There are paths. Are you gonna continue being the rebel fighting the good fight? Potentially always being alienated in some way shape or fashion, like Superman in “Superman V Batman: Dawn of Justice.” Through all the good he did, humanity still looked at him as a monster throughout the movie. They questioned his fight, his heart, and his soul, because he was different. Similar to Michael Jackson, all that positive he did to better humanity, songs like “Black or White” to fight against discrimination and hatred against one because of race, or songs like “They Don’t Care about Us,” where he speaks out about the music industry and evils of the world. This is where MJ shinned the light on that fact that he was still being pointed out as a pedophile, crazy, self-hating, and made fun of his because of his skin condition and plastic surgery.
The unknown is often questioned. Is it good or is it bad? Often it is deemed bad. Superman’s mom told him in the movie Superman v Batman, “you can get out while you can, you don’t have to fight for humanity.” Or on the flip-side how Captain America was asked at the end of The Winter’s Soldier movie to escape.
So… what is DAWN gonna do? Is she gonna fight the good fight? The fight to break through adversities, in music (narrow genre labeling, her ability to bend genres, better quality in music), misogyny and sexism, homophobia, racism, culture appreciation, etc., as the great Urban indie icon (in the great words of ‘The Dope Avenue”)? Or is this it? Is she done with the good fight? Though now she has an army, not just of her, but many other rebels. Now the rebels, are the minorities. They are now hearts that she has acquired along the way, and still they rise (as Maya Angelou would say).
The Outro is perfect, and so simple. The synth harmonies with DAWN’s androgynous lower register, that she so famously loves and brilliantly layers with auto-tune for such a more cinematic, hauntingly mesmerizing effect. In all it’s glory, it is every bit of lovely. This is definitely an epic ending of a made-for-Broadway play, something like the end of the “Blood Brothers” play. An Epic end to not only an epic album, but this epic journey DAWN’s has taken us on, that is bigger than just music. Making the statement that, music itself is bigger than life.
