Review // Beabadoobee - Somerset House - 12 July 2023
Appeared in the Evening Standard. Read online.
This year is shaping up to be something of a rollercoaster for Beatrice “Beabadoobee” Laus. Peaks have included scoring a viral hit with February’s single Glue Song and spending much of March and April touring the US as the opening act on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.
On the flipside, the Filipino-English singer-songwriter was recently forced to cancel an EU tour due to lingering illness. And then there’s the ongoing controversies at Bea’s record label, Dirty Hit, where label-mate Rina Sawayama is publicly feuding with Matty Healy of The 1975 over culturally insensitive comments made on a podcast.
If any of this drama is weighing on Bea, there were no visible signs at Somerset House, where the 23-year-old was headlining as part of the annual Summer Series. Quietly nonchalant behind a Kermit-green Telecaster, she and her three-piece band strode onstage and ripped through the barbed guitar-pop of Talk from last year’s acclaimed LP Beatopia, before launching straight into 2019’s Apple Cider.
Concision was the watchword throughout, with Bea and her band packing in an impressive 18 songs in just under an hour. Between-song interaction was kept to a minimum too, beyond air kisses and regular declarations of love for her fans. That affection was reciprocated and then some by the youthful, largely female audience, who shrieked wildly during guitar solos and bellowed back every lyric.
On the strength of performances like this, it’s not difficult to see why Bea continues to strike such a chord with Gen Z. Putting a TikTok-friendly twist on Nineties grunge, she proved her guitar hero credentials during Charlie Brown and Care from 2020 debut Fake It Flowers, which balanced sugary vocals with thrillingly serrated guitar distortion. She Plays Bass saw Bea dueling with her bassist during the middle eight, and was briefly reprised at the end to allow the audience to mosh en masse.
Interestingly, the set’s gentler moments were arguably stronger, serving to reinforce Bea’s bedroom-pop roots. The acoustic tropicalia of The Perfect Pair proved especially gorgeous, as did Glue Song’s string-embellished, lullaby-like sweetness, which was cheekily dedicated to “that one sexy motherf**ker out there.”
Stepping out on stage alone at the start of the encore, Bea delivered a dreamy acoustic one-two of forthcoming single The Way Things Go and breakout hit Coffee – as sampled on Powfu’s 2020-smash Death Bed (Coffee For Your Head). Though not due to be released for another week, the breezy guitar-pop of the former elicited a word-perfect singalong.
It all augurs extremely well for album number three – which is reportedly “in the works” – and by extension the rest of the year. Because, after a bumpy few months, there’s no denying that last night Bea got 2023 back on course.

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Beabadoobee’s sticking
To you like glue… (✿◠‿◠)
Arriving in time for Valentine’s Day, the British-Filipino singer’s latest single recalls the acoustic feel of her earlier EPs while adding a dash of lounge jazz, evoking the feel of Spring in full bloom as lilting trumpets slow dance with sweeping snares.
The clip, meanwhile, has Bea returning to her hometown in the Philippines, wandering through each scene with an almost dreamlike feel. Even the cover art has some serious Lily Chou-Chou vibes.
Says Bea (via Stereogum):
‘I wrote a lot of this song while on tour across Australia and Asia in the back of cars and traveling. It’s a heartfelt song that means a lot to me…. A love song and the first one I’ve written in my new relationship. I usually write these songs that are sad, in the past with my writing even when it doesn’t sound sad looking back, the lyrics usually have been. For the first time this is just me being really happy. I’m in a really positive place for the first time in a long time and feeling love.
‘We recorded the song with my guitarist and producer Jacob in his house and added in trumpets and strings. This song feels really personal and I went to my home town in Ilo Ilo to film the music video. It’s where I was born and so that also added another personal touch to the song.’

Social Media Content: Merchandise
In addition to featuring physical media and tour posters, the social media pages of both Beabadoobee and Death Grips feature merchandise. As such, I looked at both their full merchandise collections to gather both inspiration and an understanding of how artists utilise merchandise to strengthen their branding.
In a similar vein to the tour posters, the merchandise designs correspond to the album artwork, however with minute differences. Though very similar, the merchandise does offer an alternative perspective to the album artwork, such as The Money Store featuring the figures' full bodies and Beatopia featuring text at the bottom. This allows for variation yet cohesion in design, making the brand feel enriched and authentic.
Creation Process
Though I had two variant artworks to choose from, I had fully utilised both of them. As such, I decided to follow a similar route to Beabadoobee through adding text to the bottom. I chose to use the album name as opposed to the artist name to demonstrate my artist's stronger emphasis on music over identity. I did however, create a variant hoodie design which featured the artwork on the back of the CD.
Final Merchandise
Overall, I feel these designs are very strong and appealing whilst still feeling unique and cohesive.

“Glue Song” is a love song about finding someone special and becoming attached to them. beabadoobee sings about experiencing this unexpected connection with someone that is unlike anything she has ever felt before, using glue as a metaphor to symbolize the bond she feels to her new partner.
On October 28, 2022, prior to its release, bea performed this song live for the first time during her concert at the Brooklyn Steel in Brooklyn, New York while on her Beatopia Tour. She then posted an Instagram Reel of her live performance the following day on October 29th, 2022.

Beabadoobee and Laufey are here to help you get laid with the smooth, jazzy tones of their latest single, ‘A Night to Remember.’
The duo turns a one night stand into something to celebrate rather than stigmatise as they blend Old Hollywood glamour with a gorgeous sweep of sultry bossa nova beats, offering more than just a suggestive wink with lines like ‘Underneath the sheets/You enchanted me/And whispered sweet nothings in my ear/I shivered beneath you/All wrapped up in embers/It was a night to remember.’
Says Bea (via Stereogum):
‘I’ve been writing with a lot of different rhythms recently, also with strings and nods to more classical sounds. Laufey is a great fit for this sound and we had started hanging out in London, so we got in the studio together to work on music and try ideas with my producer Jacob. We also hung in NY on my tour and started becoming closer friends. We wrote ‘A Night To Remember’ and decided we wanted to write something that sounds grand but a bit more sexy lyrically and have fun with that theme.’
Laufey adds:
‘Bea has been one of my favorite musicians for a while so getting to write and sing with her was a dream come true. We both agreed that we wanted to write something a bit sexier for this project and ‘A Night To Remember’ was born. There are so many songs about being rejected as a woman and this song is about being on the other side of the coin — having one great night then walking away. Reclaiming the narrative! We recorded it in London with Jacob, Bea’s producer and added some finishing touches in LA with my producer Spencer Stewart. This song is a true marriage of my and Bea’s sonic worlds and I can’t wait for the world to dive into the cinematic sound this song offers.’
