I agree, anon, and just think it’s really complicated. Most people don’t consciously realize that they’re doing it, because it’s what we’re all passively taught to believe.

I empathize with the appeal of seeing a beloved character endure trauma without displaying obvious signs of disability. It is reassuring, to some degree, and encouraging, that maybe our own traumas won’t be visible, or enduring. That we can get through tough things unscathed.

The problem lies in mindfulness about how one describes this preference. I absolutely cannot speak for all mentally ill people, but I definitely notice the difference between someone defending canon characterization, and someone (inadvertently, probably) sliding into ableist rhetoric in its defense.

Our culture teaches us to prefer the canon version, the normal version, the sane version, the reliable version. We are that this is a morally superior state of being, in that we are taught that signs of trauma are signs of weakness and moral laziness. That is why we feel disgust or other strong aversive emotions when presented with visible ‘weakness.’

I believe it is not a moral failure to be a mess, and shame is one of the most unhelpful possible emotions in healing.

I think mentally ill people are very vulnerable to guilt and shame about their disorders, and I want more than anything for fanfic to be a place where people can not experience the shame that our culture usually places on stigmatized traits. Where they won’t have to hear and feel the disgust of the audience at their ‘weaknesses.’

When I personally read posts that make me feel ashamed, and inferior, it makes worry about other people who are less comfortable with their diagnosis, and who think that they are morally bad people for the way their illness manifests. It’s very hard to unlearn, and I want people to know it’s alright to be sick, and that they aren’t bad or inferior people for having symptoms.

That’s all. I regret any and all Discourse, just... I am mentally ill and I write Obi-Wan who is a mess, with a slippery veneer of competence on top. It is what resonates with me, because it’s my experience.
