I'm thinking of Melon and Legoshi's relationship again specifically in the early pre-"evil does exist" stages they make me so ill. Legoshi wants to save him soooo bad.

it's soooooo funny bc up until that point, legoshi HAD saved everyone (excluding the shishigumi boss who he was too much of a baby to ACTUALLY mortally wound). as far as legoshi is concerned, Melon is just another Riz. someone who, if he could manage to empathize and reason with, would at least Reconsider his actions and turn himself in for treatment. which is of course exactly what melon laughs at him for 💖 because he sucks and has spent the last dozen or so years reinforcing the same noxious beliefs in himself over and over and over again 💖

though to be fair to legoshi, Melon IS similar to riz in a lot of ways. it's because of this that I believe a loss of taste is linked directly to feelings of trauma and guilt, which, well. you don't actually learn how early on in melons life he'd been isolated and assaulted, we just know it'd been happening for a long time, and while he was Very Young. while Melon himself says his lack of taste is because of his mixed genetics, there is no actual proof that that's the case. also both Melon and Legoshi are unreliable narrators LOL neither of them know shit for fuck about the world in two entirely different ways.

anyway legoshi shouldve spent more time with his grandpa and volunteered at that mixed daycare too, then he really would've been able to meet more like himself and his mom. ALAS!! he and haru BOTH wanted to be soooo nicies and save the world's most miserable 24yo because he just so happens to be a representative of the Potential they want to bring into the world, unaware of course that he took his trauma and doubled down on the worst parts of what others saw him as.

okay i know this is mostly a goofy manga cap page but fuck it im gonna do some analysis too

so bald legosi arc right? legosi is trying to train his body for combat WITHOUT using meat to give himself the fuel he needs to bulk up. legosi sees eating meat as morally wrong and especially hypocritical for himself personally because the reason he seeks strength is in order to PROTECT herbivores from violence at the hands of carnivores

ENTER PINA COLADA

i love pina colada because im a nasty messy bitch who loves causing problems and i love pina for matching that energy. really i do. but i'm very okay with admitting that my enjoyment of pina is superficial, so i started asking myself WHY pina is Like This™

OKAY SO this scene right here got something across to me that the anime absolutely did not. so we've kind of established that the carnivore herbivore dynamic in the world of beastars is a very complicated metaphor that means different things at different times. its not JUST race relations, its not JUST sexuality, its not JUST inequality, it is everything about a society through this lens of animal instinct to highlight whatever particular criticism is being dissected. AND THIS PAGE!!! is about PRIVILEGE!!!

"I'm here trying to control my desires, and he just does whatever the hell he wants." Legosi is viewing pina's freedom to speak his mind and live freely as something he gains in his life via a position of privilege. Pina will never be consumed by the instinct to murder and cannibalize his loved ones, and so pina can pursue life in a flippant, disingenuous and carefree manner.

and legosi FUCKING HATES THISSSSS because the entire bald legosi arc is about legosi trying to EMPOWER HIMSELF THROUGH SELF HATRED. legosi's refusal to eat meat to fuel his body the way it NEEDS to be fueled when stressed and trained the way hes training is not something done out of moral obligation, it is done as a way for legosi to try and forcibly EXCISE a part of his innate BIOLOGY that he HATES.

but yknow heres something else. this doesnt sound right to me. pina is hedonistic, sure, but why is his philosophy specifically "morals don't really do us much good" and not something more, lets say, benevolently hedonistic?

our girl haru gives us our answer.

while legosi views pina's devil may care attitude as a privilege, so too do herbivores view carnivore's strength as a privilege. pina will never be COMPELLED to murder and cannibalize, but legosi will never be TARGETED to be murdered and cannibalized. pina's casual disregard and DISRESPECT of the real danger legosi presents to him (that legosi NEVER allows himself to forget) is a defense mechanism in the same way haru's sexuality is for her. pina has absorbed and internalized exactly where he stands in this world, and through taunting the carnivores around him, he feels feels empowered in the same way haru's sexuality empowers her. pina is hedonistic because he is living every day as if it were his last, squeaking out whatever pleasure the world has to offer carelessly, because if people love him, he has power over them.

And if he taunts a carnivore and lives to tell the tale, then in that moment, he had power over them. This power struggle is the CORE of beastars, where humanity and instinct collide and give us the messy, deeply fucked up world this story takes place in. Pina is a character driven to recklessness and hedonism by his own disenfranchisement in a world where cannibalistic murders are commonplace and yet life goes on. It must go on, and this is how pina goes on.

Hey, I’m Charlie! I’m an East Coast cosplayer migrating back to my home website in the aftermath of the TikTok ban. I’ve been on and off Tumblr since 2013, but wanted to make a blog specifically for cosplay so I can give a middle finger to meta while still keeping in touch with other fans of my favorite series.

I’m primarily into Bungou Stray Dogs, along with other fandoms like TMA, Hannibal, Beastars, Death Note, Zelda, MXTX, and Nier, among others. I go to most major conventions on the East Coast, with my next ones being Katsucon and C2E2.

I’m a novice seamstress/crafter and a big fan of altering, thrifting, or making cosplays. It was how I got started back in 2014 and how I am able to affordably and sustainably enjoy this hobby. I also love hosting trivia and debate panels, and can often be found running them with friends at cons.

well the real reason i wanted to write it was as a background essay to anthropoliticalfiction meta. because not that there needs to be justification for it but because i really want to get beastars with it and overload the characters with onion layers of meaning and intermix the metaphors until they sludge together into something that doesn't map one to one with anything. that is to say trans milf china is awesome and i love her.

i wanted to write a bit about pinkwashing and imperialism but i thought that i should explain the patriarchy and sexgender too but then i got distracted by power/not-power/faggotized-subaltern and how that maps onto productive/reproductive/waste and subject/object/abject as categories wahh

see this is what i love about beastars they just go BALLS TO THE WALLS with the world building for the sake of this strange allegory!! and you'd think having the whole animal thing represent multiple ideas would be messy, but the way itagaki-sensei maneuvers the world so that the animal allegory represents different things at different times is actually really clever! i think trying to piece together what exactly the animal allegory is trying to say at the moment is a really interesting exercise because

OF COURSE your reaction to "theres eugenics in beastars" is WHAT THE FUCK THERES EUGENICS IN BEASTARS??? but then you remember what the rest of beastars is ABOUT, so now the question becomes "how does the eugenics in beastars relate to the overall message about identity?"

characters in beastars struggle with the idea of perception vs identity. at some point in the story, nearly EVERYONE is a victim of some kind of prejudice. the prejudice in the world of beastars shows how the perceptions of society shape our identity, whether we choose to accept social conventions or not.

If those panels from my previous post (shown in chapters 56 and 131 respectively) are chronologically accurate, that would mean Agata's birthday is sometime between September - early April.

This also means that all the other Shishigumi lions besides Free and Ibuki have birthdays in mid April - August

the thing that makes me so interested in a crossover between these three specifically is how Sing, Zootopia, and Beastars are all set in a world of anthropomorphic animals, but they can't be the same world because small differences make them fundamentally incompatible. obviously Beastars takes place in a world where cannibalism is a Thing and the politics are completely different, but Sing also has species types (namely reptiles and primates) that Zootopia doesn't, and Zootopia's world has reached a level of peace and prosperity that Beastars definitely hasn't.

off the top of my head, some of the most meaningful differences are:

-in Zootopia, the city is built to accommodate all types of animals with various heights, weights, shapes and sizes. in Sing, the city is built with a "one size fits all" mindset and forces non-standard animals like Mike (a mouse) and Moon (a koala) to compensate. In stark contrast, the school in Beastars forms its architecture around species segregation, and the "one size fits all" approach is only used in public spaces with lots of traffic.

-speaking of sizes, Zootopia has animals that are accurately sized and proportioned to real life, while Sing and Beastars have relatively scaled down versions (e.g Meena the elephant only reaching the height of a tall human). Beastars in particular seems to be base heights entirely based on vibes--dogs seem to be human height, snakes can be tiny or huge, and even small animals are frequently sized up to the height of a smallish child.

-Sing and Beastars also have far more humanoid characters in comparison to Zootopia.

-species that exist are super varied. in Zootopia, it's strictly regulated to mammalian herbivores and carnivores with occasional omnivores like raccoons and otters. in Beastars, there are mostly mammals but domestic animals like dogs and chickens are included. in Sing, pretty much anything goes - gorillas, koalas, chickens, dogs, sheep, snails, and what have you.

-the predator/prey relations. Zootopia has tense societal drama between predator and prey but individuals can coexist just fine - the fear is always there, but generally the violence of the wild is comfortably behind them. Beastars features a much sharper divide between predator and prey species due to the very real presence of cannibalism, and the fragile peace between carnivores and herbivores always feels ready to snap. meanwhile, Sing doesn't have any species-related conflicts whatsoever and there's no word on whether they ever existed.

so if you hypothetically wrote something where the characters of one of these stories fell into the world of another, it would make really interesting dynamics - and those dynamics would change based on which world is the main setting. sending Nick and Judy into the Beastars world would force them to confront even worse prejudice (and prompt some meta, considering the original concepts present in Zootopia's plot), but sending them into the Sing world would give them whiplash because there aren't any species-based prejudices AT ALL. meanwhile, sending Haru and Legoshi into the Zootopia world wouldn't be a big deal because wolves and rabbits exist there, while sending Johnny and Ash into the Zootopia world would cause tons of problems because Zootopia's world has never seen gorillas or porcupines.

i can think of so many scenarios for this. imagine Nick and Louis, two characters who have defined themselves by societal expectations of their species, falling into Sing's world and being gobsmacked that the bigoted worldviews and ugly stereotypes they've struggled with all their lives simply don't exist. imagine Judy falling into the Beastars world and, while trying to get home, valiantly tries to smooth over the predator/prey conflicts she comes across, only to slowly figure out just how violent and depraved the world is compared to hers. imagine Meena falling into the Beastars world and seeming like a giant, or falling into the Zootopia world and looking way too tiny compared to the other elephants. i spent way too long thinking about this but you get it right

having been lying in bed sick all day, i've had many strange things on my mind over the course of the past 12 hours and yet the only topic that interests me now is the ramifications of writing a crossover between Beastars, Zootopia, and Sing.

One of the many well-done sides of Beastars is that no character is overlooked. They're all described well and even if it's not made explicit, they have their own emotional spectrum that shines through in the drawings.

Bill is a recurring character, so I'm not surprised that he continues to appear in the manga even after Louis graduates and Legosi is gone... I do like that he's explored in depth like this though.

On the other hand, I was surprised by Aoba, who says practically nothing in these two panels other than "Bill" and "It's my treat" and yet you can tell that Bill's words affected him and that he's thinking about it, and will think about it later.

It's nice when side characters aren't so minor after all

Beastars headcannon: Dogs to any other animal look just wrong. Most of the time no one could tell you just what it is, just a sense of wrongness/unnatural, very much uncanny valley.

Legoshi doesn't notice due to his hybrid nature, qnd with Collot it is very pronounced in his eyes hence them being covered.

Bit late to work this into my fics fully except maybe that some dog breeds have it that were early experiments.
