inspired by @mightbeorphanedidk AO3 work 'Mama Can't Help You Now' -
Tumblr media
The first chapter kept me in a creative chokehold which has inspired my own little idea I must write at some point. When envisioning this scene with how Alastors dad was looking for Alastor I couldn't get rid of the idea that it was like a wolf stalking.
I am aware that I've drawn them as animals, after watching a 3 hour long video about Beastars I got inspired by that as well (and I have a love hate relationship with drawing humans), whenever thinking about how Alastors father would look in hell I always imagine him as hell hound looking and his mother as a doe.
So I was like oh hey Melon from Beastars is a mix between a gazelle and leopard so proceeded to make Alastor a mix between a Wolf and deer.
Tumblr media
Trying to blend a wolf and deer together was pretty fun and I lowkey kind of love how I made this version look. adding all the little stuff just to try to blend the two like how Alastors tail is still deer looking but bigger and fluffier.
His hooves being more like massive claws, eyes having slit pupils, Wolf teeth and more upright ears.
I could go on a full rant about even more details I've come up with for this idea, hence why I am writing it instead, saying that I probably will end up posting more and more about this. Along with art ofc.
I will also note that I'm not going to be writing them as animals on two legs, drawing them as animals on two leg was just how I decided to portray showing how their forms in hell was influenced.

Melon (Beastars) being a canonically asexual character is so interesting to me, especially since I haven’t really seen it discussed much. (Also btw this is unsorted ramblings from an ace-spectrum person, I don’t really have a specific point here I’m just spouting thoughts)
Tw: mentions of SA trauma, murder and misogyny (?). Also I’m reading an English translated version, so if anything was lost between languages or culture please let me know.
It follows the trope of “doesn’t experience attraction because of some curse or disability” I’ve seen for a lot of “unintentionally” ace characters, but… he doesn’t really seem to be bothered by it. The only time he acts upset about it is the speech he gives his tattoo artist, which was just a ploy to gain sympathy from Legoshi. He’s much more bothered by lacking taste, something that disrupts his everyday life. He doesn’t give his lack of attraction much thought.
He tries so hard to gain a sense of taste by devouring herbivores, but he doesn’t care about not wanting to have sex.
Melon is also implied to have been sexually abused by his mother in his childhood, and even though his asexuality is unrelated to his trauma, it’s treated like his sexual aversion is. He mocks the Shishigumi for their attraction, he finds the scent of female pheromones repulsive because they remind him of his mother, leopard spots make him ill because they show off the wearers lust like they did for his mother.
He’s a character contented with his own sexuality, but also clearly impacted by his past trauma and I dunno I wish other people would talk about him

Maybe it's just because I find Legoshi's personality boring as fuck but I feel like Beastars would've been at least 50% more interesting with Juno as the main character.
Like imagine, Juno secretly holds resentment for her heritage and kind of blames her grandfather for her mother's suicide. She does everything the can to be a perfect carnivore, interacting properly with the herbivores, taking leadership, modeling strength and bravery, but then suddenly this cute little rabbit named Haru shows up and suddenly she can't control herself and maintain the mask. She starts taking risk where she KNOWS she shouldn't and she knows that is because of this rabbit but she just can't bring herself to admit it, and after defeating the shishigumi she says she did it only because "it was right".
Meanwhile she's not so subtly vying for domince against Louis at the school, so when suddenly he stops going she feels relived that the struggle is over. But soon that relief turns to concern and she goes to see him with the shishigumi because she realizes that she misses his presence and begs him to come back to school for his future, and also because Haru is so concerned. Louis instead just gives her his blessing for Haru and she's embarrassed as hell that he noticed.
And when Melon comes along and she starts to see her grandpa as he warns her away from trouble she starts to really question and deconstruct the ethics of hybrids like them. She realizes that she wants a future with Haru and feels selfish about it but just can't resist and they end up getting together.

Spitball idea: Most people headcannon Alastor's father to have been abusive, and yeah abusive fathers are common in real life and fiction, but what abusive mothers?
Like imagine if Al's mom was abusive (no dad in the picture), but he still loved her all the same (kinda like real victims). Like what if their relationship was similar to that of Melon and his mother from Beastars (I doubt they'd go that route but still).
Or neither parent was abusive and they raised Al as normally as possible (in that time period) but he still became a cannibalistic serial killer.
This isn't really a theory, just some ideas I had. You can reee at me all you want in the replies, lol.

If you feel like it, what would you do with Haru and Melon if they were your characters? :3
HOO BOY. ok so. i think it’s a travesty that all the school characters got sidelined during the melon arc but ESPECIALLY haru. she’s stubborn and independent and she deserved to find her own strength as a person outside of her complicated relationship with legosi. i would have at least given her some narrative significance during the fight club/melon arc, maybe having her interact w melon as a student and get curious/suspicious about him. she could be following his trail at the same time as legosi, but from a different starting point, until they both meet in the middle and realize theyre after the truth about the same guy. OR have them work together from the start and learn to navigate each other through their shared goal of taking down melon! the other bunny girl was kind of cringe and boring. i hate “girlboss” characters whose only “tough” trait is being mean to everyone. haru’s struggle with her own fragility and identity as a small prey animal was infinitely more interesting than the hot bunny girl who showed up already way more cool and badass and self assured than the rest of the cast :/
i also HAAAAAAATE how melon’s story got retconned. “haha yeah actually his mom didnt eat his dad that was just for the sillies lol” WHAT??? WHAT?? WHAT????
the fucking driving force behind melon’s severe psychological state is that his mother was clearly abusing him by subjecting him to emotional incest and he killed her when he was made aware that she had abused his father too.
the point when he learns what happened to his father is when he understands that what his mother is doing to him constitutes abuse, and so he retaliates. this is a pivotal moment in his life. to take away the stakes here by saying that it was all a misunderstanding completely delegitimizes the experiences that lead him to where he is now.
also, why would the leopard even say that she ate her husband if that wasn’t true?? like what the fuck was the point of that scene at all if it was never real? god i hate this retcon so fucking much
JUNO ALSO DESERVED WAY BETTER WRITING TOO FUCK i hate the ending of beastars so muchhhhhhhh

I didn't originally plan for Emily's mother to be a sympathetic and tragic character, but as the story developed, doppels became less of the villains, and I started thinking about how her and MC's parents met, things changed
MC's dad was already set up to be a horrible person, so I realized I couldn't do that again with Mallory
A lot of my inspiration for her story was Beastars, specifically relationships like Haru and Legoshi, Melon's parents, Tem and Riz, and even the story of the wolf and the camel from Beast Factor
I knew while writing the main story that MC had to change and grow as a person by the end of the story, so the seeds were planted. To have a tragic character like Mallory die by the hands of the MC and Francis, two people who knew nothing of her pain and only acted in self defense, would be an effective way to avoid their actions existing in a vacuum and show it's not black and white. Hell, it can even be debated if killing her was a mercy with how far gone she was, just depends how you want to look at it.
Winslow's perspective also brings to mind the idea that the reader did essentially keep a mother away from her child. Was the child scared of her? Yes. Was it necessarily dangerous for her to be with the mom though? Possibly. She had been the best mother she could but in her blood frenzy who's to say where her mind is
MC isn't some righteous hero, they are just as morally gray as everyone else. They make mistakes and false assumptions, they have knee-jerk reactions. Like everyone else, they're just surviving

i’m gonna talk abt beastars manga shit below
fuckingggggg everything with legoshi’s mom :’)
like idk all her shame around being a hybrid and the way she just like. couldn’t do it. which like damn it’s fair the society they live in is fucked
her obsession with legoshi being “normal” and equating that with beauty and her hatred of her scales which was the very thing her mother loved about gosha :’) and her living life as a beautiful wolf to develop scales later in life and her whole sense of self worth hinging on her presentation as a female wolf
it’s so interesting looking at the different hybrids in beastars and how the ways they were treated by society shaped them
if legoshis mom hadn’t simply looked like a normal wolf for most of her life then she would’ve been completely different, definitely not like melon bc he had other crazy shit going on but yeah I dunno. it’s interesting to think about. Legoshis mom is such a tragic character

beastars ending spoilers
like even with how much the final arc fumbled, the ending STILL pulled off the landing with the reveal that "carnivore" and "herbivore" were never real, biological roles in this universe but instead societally created categories. i don't like melon as a character but the reveal that he was never "biologically destined" to be a killer as it pulls back to reveal his father is alive, his mother never ate him, and his own beliefs about himself were shaped by the harm caused by others because he was different...it's good!!
you know in hindsight it’s clear a lot of the discourse around the metaphors/themes within beastars was people being unable to accept that a lot of it wasn’t a straight 1:1 with real life relationships but instead multiple overlapping ideas surrounding societally deemed non-normative attraction, ‘race’ and ‘gender’ as societal constructs, and grappling with attraction and desire as an adolescent/young adult

What if Melon’s father took Melon with him when he left?
This idea comes from a Whumptober one-shot I did. In Possession (number 15), Melon’s father is held hostage by Melon’s mother and is unable to leave. I was going to leave it at that but now I’m beginning to really like the idea of his father escaping and taking Melon with him.
Things that happen in the AU:
- Melon’s father does start off as passive and cowerdly (much like he was in the manga) and doesn’t have much of a relationship with Melon (as they were both prisoners in the apartment and weren’t allowed to have normal father-son interactions). Him taking Melon with him is more out of morality than the fact that he’s his son. He does get stronger and develop a back bone later in the AU.
- The relationship between them is awkward at first (from years of not being allowed to speak their minds or really talk to each other) and is more about survival. I imagine that as Melon grows older, he may hate and resent his father for not protecting him from his mother or doing anything to stop the abuse. He might later leave his father, not standing to be around him but I like to think that Melon eventually forgives his father. Realizing that he was just as much a victim of his mother’s craziness as he was.
- The escape happens instead of Melon killing his mother. This means that the entire time they are free, there’s a fear that Melon’s mother would eventually find them and take them back.
- In this AU, Melon’s father isn’t neglectful. It’s more like fatherhood was both enforced on him but he was also never given a chance to really be a father because of his leopard partner’s control over him and Melon. He acts out of morality and what he knows is right but still doesn’t know how to be a good, protective father (to sum it up, he’s not a bad guy or a deadbeat dad-he just doesn’t know what in the heck he’s doing).
- I’m not sure if Melon would still be evil in this AU but, since he has his father in his life, he doesn’t view love as he does in the manga (love and predation being the same thing). I think he may still have a stunted view of love anyway though.
- This would sort of be a road-trip AU in the beginning. With Melon and his father mostly living in hotels, motels, any friends or relatives houses that would take them in, and in his father’s car. It’s also a ‘us against the world’ sort of AU I guess. XD
I don’t know if I’d actually write anything of it (since I have so many other fics I have to work on) but I’ll certainly be drawing stuff of it and I’m open for any discussion on it!

Jesus, it was under our nose the whole time...
Gosh, it isn’t just society shitting on him for being a hybrid, Melon is also fucked up because...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...his mom did terrible things to him. ://
Legosi once said he wanted to help/save Melon: by this point, I doubt it’s achievable, but I know Legosi still shares the sentiment that he has to be the one to stop Melon, even if he might not entirely get why.
Yet it makes absolute sense: even if Lenoa had a lot of self-loathing as a hybrid and ended up choosing to die, at least she wished for the best for her son and both she and Legosi are immensely loved by Gosha.
It isn’t an entirely functional family (not with Lenoa’s suicide), but it’s better than the horror kingdom of Melon’s childhood. T_T
So yeah, Legosi, my boy...
Tumblr media
...help him the best way you can: by stopping him and that hatred born from abuse that burns everything around him.
