after comes a long pause, wherein dorothea merely looks at marianne gently, patiently, giving her the time to soak in the barrage of words. that was perhaps a bit too much, but damn her, dorothea’s excited.

       she’s squinting at dorte, hay in her arms. she squints even more, and then— ❝ achoo! ❞ oh. that was a sneeze. it seems to startle the horse because she’s snorting and whining, leia smiling sheepishly. “woopsies! i’m sorry, dorte! the hay got the best of me there!” and then she sees marianne, and woops. looks like that startled her too. “oh, sorry for that marianne. here to see dorte as usual, right?” // @beastaire ( sc. )

“ our version of living feels more like death. ” !!

It seemed like just yesterday that they were able to joke around about taking a stroll into town, about practicing smiles and viewing all of the wonderful things the world had to offer. Now, the only thing they really had to look at was piles of rubble, destroyed buildings, ruined towns. Ghosts of what once was.

Sylvain glances over at Marianne as she speaks, hands subconsciously clenching into fists as she does so. Pessimistic…but true. Sure, they were all still alive (he couldn’t say the same for some of his old friends, a thought that pierced his heart like an arrow every single time), but it got harder and harder to smile when death surrounded them every day.

Still, they had to try. How else would they make it through battle after battle if they didn’t at least try?

“There may be some truth to that, but…”

“The best thing we can do is keeping moving forward and push a smile on our faces. Even if you have to force it. Sometimes wearing a smile can trick your brain into thinking things are okay.” Perhaps that wasn’t the healthiest of advice, but he faintly remembers someone telling him that you could control your own fate. “Trust me. I have experience with faking it. Y’know, what… Forget that. I can’t stand seeing you look so sad. Even if it disappears when I walk away, would you bless me with that sweet smile?”

     hand raises a fresh apple, meant for her winged steed. between classes and training in the academy, spending time with her pegasus always brought a unique sense of calm— one that seemed to be shared by the leicester noble at the corner of her eye.

         ❝ you must love horses, marianne. ❞ gaze turns to her schoolmate's, who seemed to be tending to dorte. ❝ horses and pegasi— they make wonderful companions, don't you agree? ❞

“That’s awfully sweet of you to say, Marianne. Thank you so much!” She briefly covers her mouth to hide her bashful giggle, before gesturing to the other.

“Though I think your mind is quite beautiful, as well! I’m glad I’ve gotten to know you a little bit more. Perhaps we can have some tea again sometime. If it’s alright with you, I’d love to hear any stories you’re willing to share about the animals you take care of!”

Thankfully, Sylvain chooses not to voice that question aloud. He’d really rather not scare Marianne off. He thought they were making progress on becoming friends and didn’t want to ruin it. He would ruin it eventually, as he did most things, but was determined to have that day not be the current one.

“Don’t worry about it. I only asked about the lecture notes, so…you know, nothing too important.”
