Finally get to share my Beast Island Angella design!! :D Context is my She-Ra Fanfic (ch. 21)!
Versions and more blabbing under the cut! :3
Starting with no background version and just the line art because why not :3
And here is my first design concept and references. I figured if Micah gets scars then so does Angella, I don't care that she's an angelic being XD her heels were not island ready so new monster leather boots were needed. While Micah is more of a forager on the island I figured Angella would lean more hunter so she has Pooka tooth knives. Jewlery gets lost and hair gets tangled so braids help with that. Yeah, that's basically it :3 Probably less island flora than I describe her wearing since it's just the vine cloak but whatever XD

also i think spop does a great job at showing how people struggle to think rationally in the face of their trauma. like, i couldnt understand why catra would activate the portal despite everyone telling her otherwise, but she'd been *badly* hurt prior to that scene and all she knew was that the rebellion, her enemies, would "lose" if she pulled the switch, so, regardless of the cost, she pulled it
similarly, hordak tries to send catra to beast island when she lies about losing shadow weaver. as far as things that have happened in the horde this isn't so catastrophic, but he insists on it, even arguing with entrapta when she defends catra's place in the horde. i think the only reason he changes his mind is partially because he decides the crimson waste would be an equally fitting punishment. but despite the fact that catra is the only one keeping the horde running, his trauma at being cast out by prime has led him to value absolute loyalty, and he won't keep her around
you can see it in adora too!! she struggles greatly to remember her own inherent value as a person like, all the time, *especially* when shadow weaver is around
and glimmer, after losing angella and having to be responsible for her kingdom and the rebellion, hurting and not used to taking personal responsibility, lashes out and blames adora when things get heated
entrapta too, on beast island, where she's fully aware that her life is in danger as long as she stays there, has to practically be dragged out, because she can't face integrating back into society, having friends again when she thinks she totally failed at being a friend
i just think the show does a great job of explaining why its characters do the things they do. like even if it doesn't make logical sense, there's emotional reasoning for everything, and i think that's neat.

aside from Adora and Catra...
.
Glimmer - too much potential wasted. her relationship with her mother is never fully realized and developed, her friendship with Bow feels oddly surface-level and like it's relevant only because Glimbow is a thing, and i personally don't like how the whole conflict between her, Adora, and Shadow Weaver was written.
Bow - the black best friend, nothing more to him. every opportunity of development was wasted, and he just ends up being a supporter for everyone else ( mostly his lighter-skinned friends ) with no arc, no importance, and no actual happy conclusion beyond ending up with Glimmer, who he had no legitimate romantic chemistry with. his backstory and the arc he had were so interesting to me, but no one did anything with them. that, and he honestly wasn't as angry or on guard with everyone as he should've been, in my opinion.
Mermista - i would've thought she was just another black stereotype, but she's apparently Southeast Asian, so never mind that, i guess. predictable, doesn't seem to care for Salineas at all, her relationship with Sea Hawk is forced and creepy, the only time i've seen her invested ( as far as i recall ) in anything was when Salineas was destroyed, which she didn't care about after 5 minutes, and the stupid Mermysteries episode.
Sea Hawk - unfunny, nonsensical, and creepy. serves no purpose other than to be a romantic interest for Mermista and occasional supposed comedic relief.
Perfuma - eugh. toxic positivity, two-faced, and simply a hypocrite. none of these issues are realized or resolved, resulting in her spouting bullshit about friendship and its 'powers' while she continues treating people she doesn't like ( namely Entrapta ) like trash. completely oblivious or willingly ignorant and irresponsible with Plumeria.
Entrapta - very much wasted potential. severely infantilized by both the writers and cast, even in her design, only considered 'morally grey' because her 'low empathy' ( i tried to look up the scientific name, but all that came up were misinterpretations of autistic people, NPD, sociopaths, and psychopaths, so. ) isn't portrayed well and misrepresents, and it gives a bad taste in my mouth that her time in Beast Island is entirely about her 'not understanding friendship' and not at all about the fact she was betrayed and sent to die. i'm equally for villain or reformed Entrapta, either one is very nice to see from other creators.
Frosta - gonna be honest, though i prefer her character introduction over how she is in the rest of the show, she's kinda an ass for no reason. kinda felt like they were trying to make a 'Toph' like character without understanding Toph at all. there's no explanation for why she feels the Horde isn't a threat to her, especially considering that the two noticeably Horde members ( Catra and Scorpia ) invaded only because Frosta let them, then pinned the blame on Adora for 'causing a scene' at her party?
Spinerella & Netossa - we don't know much about them, and we know nothing about their Kingdoms. literally nothing. we know Net is a strategist and doesn't take shit from anybody ( even if that only came s5 ), but Spin doesn't seem to have... much going for her? i didn't like the "calm lighter person angry darker person" thing they did, that wasn't cute, and i didn't like the thought of Netossa using the fact that Spinerella was involved in a cult and chipped as a way to avoid doing chores in the future.
Scorpia - honestly, there's so much we don't know about her that it drives me nuts. i really wish that we had Catra actually earn something for once, and it would've been awesome ( and tragic, considering s3-s4 ) if it was Scorpia's love, trust, and respect. a lot of her lore is just said, not even really referenced or implied, and hardly ever shown, if at all. and i would've loved her to be called out for her enabling by someone other than Lonnie, since... well, that's kinda just hypocrisy, isn't it?
Angella - ohhh, how she hurts me ( /pos ). one of the better written characters, but still had wasted potential and should've been respected much more, even if it wasn't going to be by Glimmer. dying // being trapped between dimensions while believing that you had been a coward all this time when you actually weren't and not being able to reunite with your husband because he turns out not to be dead is fucking tragic, and, at the very least, her death deserved to be respected and remembered.
Micah - uhh, man, where do i begin with this one? kooky man trope in the beginning, that wasn't cute. don't even recall why he was on Beast Island to begin with. he only got to grieve his wife for a minute or two. the rest of his character either has to do with just being a dad ( when Glimmer isn't even there ) or being chipped, so yay. also, for a supposedly women empowering show, they changed Castaspella from being one of the best sorcerers on Etheria to Micah. and also made them related, with him being the older brother. hm.
Castaspella - speaking of. she's just the unbearable aunt until s5, and even then, she doesn't have much relevance to the plot. the show also made her dynamic with Shadow Weaver fucking weird for no reason. just make them similar ages, if that's the case, you cretins. there's not much input from her about Micah's supposed death, even though, according to the show, Angella doesn't talk to her, for some reason.
Shadow Weaver - RAAAAAH ( /pos )!!! i'mma say it, she was another one of the better written characters and i love her. that said, she does fall under the 'would you look at that, your racism is showing' still, for similar reasons to Hordak and Horde Prime. basically, the bad people... the colonizers... are black. yeah. okay. also, demonizing disfigurement ( ableism ) is not cute, go fuck yourself 🤍.
Hordak - wasted potential, 100%, and could've been an angsty badass bastard if it weren't for how weak the writers made his character. instead of a domineering, powerful lord, he's kinda just a sad blanket that's sometimes cruel and effective. also deals with the racism and ableism issue, wooo.
Horde Prime - ...he's boring, made to sound smarter than he actually is, and falls under the racism ( and potentially under the ableism? ) category, second verse same as the first.
Wrong Hordak - i don't appreciate how he was never taken seriously, in terms of his traumas and struggling to come to terms with it, meanwhile everyone was catering to Catra's. that, and i don't like his name. i prefer calling him 'Horro'.
Lonnie - angry black woman trope. again. is also a bully, never gets that resolved, and somehow ends up with her victim and her enabler?
Rogelio - ... i don't know what to say about him, to be honest, aside from him enabling Lonnie's bullying and not really having a reason for it, considering he's supposedly Kyle's friend. oh, and the fact the only mute character ( apparently he has a speech impediment??? but i don't recall him ever talking??? ) is a big lizard is also not cute.
Kyle - 'everyman' trope, but i love him, and he deserves better than the abuse he faces for literally just existing, and i love when people acknowledge him. i genuinely feel like he deserved either a way out or a villain arc, i don't care how unserious it sounds.
DT - 🤮!!! only non-binary character is a lizard, a creep, act smarter than they are, and simply a plot device for future Catra angst and setting up drama between other characters for no reason.
Flutterina // Peekablue - does it even matter? they're not even real, apparently. ...okay, fine. Flutterina is just a damsel in distress who's pretended ( by the writers ) to be bigger just because it's DT in disguise, and Peekablue could've saved me a lot of headaches if he was introduced to the series earlier. but then again, they never used his abilities when he was introduced, so never mind.
Huntara - repeat after me, everybody: 🎉WASTED POTENTIAL🎉 just like the Crimson Waste, Huntara's character isn't ever explored beyond one episode and, half of the time, it's not even taken that seriously. she could've been an interesting foil or parallel to Adora.
Mara - tragedy. pure tragedy. i think there were a lot of missing details, but i still really like her character and her story ( except for the finale, but i honestly don't consider that the real her? maybe i'm just nitpicking and favoring, though ), and i will always believe she deserved better.
Light Hope - this might get me some heat, but i think she deserved better, too. i would've loved if her character was taken to a 'chained by protocol' route ( COUGHtotally not because i did the same thingCOUGH- ), especially since there were moments we saw her warmth and friendliness, and her attempt to comfort Adora was always kinda nice for me. i get that most people don't like her, or only like her because of her interactions with Mara, but after knowing of how she ( he ) was in the original, i feel like she was wasted and used as an obstacle.
Madame Razz - uhhh... i mean, kooky old grandma trope. once again, lots of waste of potential, especially considering i'm pretty sure that, in the original show, she's the reason the Rebellion could even hide in the Whispering Woods in the first place? or at least part of the reason.
Swift Wind - i prefer elegance and wittiness over this, sorry not sorry.
Imp - i mean. he's. there. that's kinda it.
Melog - deserved sooooo much more than just being Catra's therapy cat. lore was never utilized, the entirely wrong person was comforting them ( Catra. you cannot tell me an overtly aggressive, hostile person would be able to actually help an alien creature that doesn't trust anyone. especially since Catra has no positive relationships. why is she suddenly calm in the face of someone she attacked? ), and they're just an excuse for a 'shipper friend'. that, and i really wish that Melog was able to have an amazing transformation after Adora heals them, like in the original. Melog could've been a great friend to Adora and co. and a powerful asset to the Rebellion. someone talked about the possible trans metaphors Melog could've had and i am FERAL.
essentially, the show's writing is basically:
you had potential. and you fucked it up.

"Would you love me if I was a worm" She-Ra edition
Catradora - They did not save the world with the power of lesbian love to let a little thing like that stop them.
Glimbow - Glimmer would still love Bow, but have a hard time adapting. She would dabble in increasingly dark magic to 'fix' it. Bow, if the roles were reversed, would read up on worm care and built a terrarium.
Glitra - Whoever. Turned. Her. Girlfriend. To. A. Worm. Dies. Tonight.
Glimmadora - They would both get into PROTEC mode and work themselves crazy to reverse the wormification, partly because they would both be too hung up on what they think their girlfriend 'deserves' to cherish what she has become.
Seamista - Whatever. (If Mermista was the worm, Sea Hawk would simply change a few words in the ballads and carry on as usual)
Scorfuma - They would have to work on it, but they would adapt. If Perfuma was the worm, She would worry that Scorpia would be needlessly scared to accidentally hurt her. Turns out, Scorpia already worries about that all the time, so the wormification would not do much of a difference. This revelation would shock Perfuma much more than being a worm, and she would be much more focused on comforting Scorpia than worry about trivialities like being a worm (she would also smugly lecture about how important worms are for plants)
Kyle/Rogelio - If Rogelio was the worm, they would both enjoy the return to their childhood size dynamic. If Kyle was the worm, neither of them would see much of a difference.
Spinetossa - WORM CARE DOES NOT HAVE TO BE A COMPETITION!
Angella/Juliet or Angella/Micah - Angella would install worm habitats all over Brightmoon, connected by tubes for safe passage. Juliet would take being a worm really badly. Micah would be just "Huh, neat. Reminds me of being on Beast Island." If Angella was the worm, she would tiredly sigh at the realization that worms still need to sit in meetings.
Shadow Weaver/Casta Spella - They would both snidely inform that they already think of the other as a worm. They would have fun with the new power dynamic.
Light Hope/Mara - Neither would find the change all that noteworthy considering everything else.
Entrapdak - Hordak already thinks of himself as a worm. Entrapta thinks worms are cool. Also, they would just build a mecha with some kind of worm-controllable interface and carry on like usual.

friendly reminder that in s4 when adora was being taken by the vines on beast island, she never once thinks about catra. she thinks about angella, glimmer and bow, and her other friends. and she specifically calls out glimmer's name before transforming into she-ra.
so much for c//a being “planned from the start”. the only people who gave adora courage in a time of crisis were her real friends.

Would you call glimmer's arc in season 4 a dictator arc? I could be wrong
so, this is actually a very interesting question and i'm glad you asked!
i want to say technically yes, even though she probably may not have seen it that way at first, or did so because she had the mindset of, "i did what i had to do, and anyone who protests must be an enemy."
going into queendom, she obviously wanted this journey to be one where all three of them were on the same page and made decisions mutually together. but as double trouble spun manipulation into the dynamic and bow & adora stopped agreeing with her, she felt threatened and assumed power over instead of with them.
they stopped being a team, and the duo began working against her when it came to the necessary beast island mission, as well as competing to (de)activate the heart of etheria, not to mention the whole... being used by shadow weaver having a role in her leadership incident, which is absolutely what the stakes often come down to once a dictatorship goes too far.
i am mostly referring to this scene as the prime example here:
i can't imagine the average subjects of bright moon would consider glimmer to be anything less than reckless, especially considering angella had been so carefully passive for however many generations; who knows just how long before?
oh, and another thing i should mention: i am a huge sucker for glimmer & catra being narrative foils to one another in many ways! season four is really when we finally see them both step up into their ranks in 4x01 "the coronation", where the latter definitely becomes an absolute dictator without a shred of doubt via overthrowing hordak. i would argue that if nothing else, the former's path looks quite similar in that regard:

Going into detail about EVERYTHING I hate about spop
This was the winner of the poll! Keep in mind these are in no particular order! I hope you enjoy it! This VERY long post so be warned!
The representation it's so bad, a lot of it is just stereotypes. Bow being the black best friend, Mermista being the sassy black woman, Catra being the angry Hispanic woman, and the only autistic character being put ON A LEASH!? The only non-binary character being a fucking LIZARD!?
Catradora. It is awful. It is so bad. It's so romantized despite being in a KID'S SHOW! That's what I hate most about it. Little kids will see this and believe this is how they should treat the person they love, or this is how someone who loves them treats them. It's just bad. Really bad.
How they ignore everyone's trauma. Some characters have some really interesting trauma that could be explored, but they just get ignored for abusive catgirl! Seriously, some of the trauma could be legitimentally interest, like Micah, how did he feel about not being able to say goodbye to his wife? About being in beast island for years? Haha no you idiots, he has no trauma! He's just a goofy dad haha! How about Glimmer who also didn't get to say goodbye to her mom, who sacrificed herself so everyone else can live? Who was crushing under the pressure of being queen! Who had everyone around her ignore her mom's death? Who got manipulated by Shadow Weaver when she was vulnerable? Haha! No, she has no trauma! Angella, always feels a lingering guilt about her husband, who believes her husband is dead. Haha! Nope! No trauma! (I used three examples but there is so much more)
Seahawk. That's it.
The way they treat war, they've treated it as a joke, a game, and a backdrop, they don't show how it affects people, we couldn't of gotten to see citizens stories of how their lives were affected? Nope!
The amount of filler. White Out and Mermesteries, have no point other than being annoying filler, they don't have any meaning to the plot, and to make it worse they just drag on and on.
The wasted potential. This is so annoying. It has so much potential, if it was given to competent writers, it could've been so good, maybe even a masterpiece, but it's just so...bad.
The "jokes" I'm being nice by calling them jokes. They are more like awkward moments that beg you to laugh. Haha Kyle, a poor innocent kid gets bullied for the 35455467568th time please laugh! Haha! Bow's voice cracks for the 967986786897th time! Laugh again!
Seamista, Mermista looks like a teenager, and Seahawk looks like he's an adult. Mermista clearly doesn't like Seahawk, Seahawk just kept invading her boundaries and eventually, they got together. Seriously what the fuck?
Worldbuilding, it is so bad at it. We never see any citizens or get a feel for how the world looks, the only difference is cosmetic
Catra's redemption arc. Just in general. it was so rushed.
The needless ships in season 5, they are so rushed and have no purpose to the plot.
The princesses are so boring and one note, for them being the title, they don't do much.
The character arcs, or lack thereof, the ones we do get are boring and one note.
The pacing is just so bad, it's either too slow or too fast.
Season 5. It's self explanatory.
That's about all I could think of at the moment! Let me know what you think!

More She Ra Thoughts
Ok, so when they find Micah on Beast Island he keeps saying "I haven't talked to anyone real... You are real, right?" and it finally hit me that he's so unsure about it, because he experienced the fake portal world too, and like everyone else, presumably still has those memories.
So we all know he tried to tell Angella that he was alive before Bright Moon disappeared in the portal world, but I just thought about how fucked up that must've been from HIS perspective.
Ok so, you're Micah, you've been surviving on a nightmare island for well over a decade, when suddenly one morning you wake up back at home with your family. Then that world fuckin' collapses and BAM, you're right back in your personal horror show.
But THEN, not even a year later (which is nothing to you given how long you've been there and how degraded your sense of time is) here comes these kids. The same kids you met in that heart wrenching tease of a hallucination (that you still have no explanation for, and must assume was just something the island did) come waltzing up to you, on your godforsaken forgotten prison island that no one is supposed to know the location of, talking about your family and taking you home to Bright Moon.
Assuming all of that is totally fake was honestly the most rational assumption he could make 🤷🏻♀️

Catra getting chipped doesn’t count as “consequences”
One thing I see among the fandom when it comes to defenses of how Catra’s redemption was written is that she suffered a lot from getting chipped, and that she doesn’t need anymore punishment. The chip experience certainly does look like hell, so I’ll give them that. But I think this part of the fandom doesn’t realize that…
Suffering is not the same as consequences.
Consequences are the result of your bad actions. Suffering is when bad things happen to you.
Again, I’m not saying that the chipping doesn’t look painful. But it has nothing to do with Catra’s actions and/or how she’s hurt the BFS, Scorpia, Entrapta, and others, therefore it’s not consequences.
The chipping doesn’t address Catra’s abuse of Adora and Scorpia
The chipping doesn’t address Catra sending Entrapta to die on Beast Island
The chipping doesn’t address Catra activating the portal, causing Angela’s death
The chipping doesn’t address Glimmer’s grief and trauma from the loss of Angella
The chipping doesn’t address Catra assisting Hordak in the destruction of Salineas
It added nothing meaningful to an already crappy redemption arc and made it worse
(I finally got a new Ipad, so expect a video criticizing SPOP season 5 sometime in 2024 ;D)

OKAY I meant to start earlier in the day but I know once I start it will be difficult to stop lol
but I have some tasty pasta to eat let's go
(how much do you want to bet EVERY EPISODE after this is a two-parter due to the sheer amount of plot bumping into tumblr's images-per-post limit)
s4 ep11 beast island
They're talking about their plan to go to Beast Island and get Entrapta--and side note, the ship goes about as fast as an airplane, judging by the clouds/ocean's movement
will she tho
(I actually don't know! This is one of those plot points I forgot in part because I marathoned the last season and change of the show almost four years ago lol; like seriously from this point on I can remember random specific scenes but not which order or why they happened; it definitely doesn't help that a couple months ago I watched a bunch of She-Ra humor videos that are all, like, just clips from s5 in no particular order)
(seriously if you're a She-Ra fan they're great, they're especially funny if you're high as balls, which Daci and I were when I was like "hey you have to watch these with me they're hilarious")
the globe map is throwing some kind of angry alarm and Swift Wind's senses are tingling
They hit....something!
points to whomever designed that, it looks really cool, and yes, vaguely menacing
okay but you were ALSO told that Princesses were all evil soooo
They find Entrapta's mask and a Horde-made skiff and Swift Wind can hear some kinda weird noise
the ship did call it a Hazardous Materials Disposal Site...
anyway a bug-robot-thing starts to attack them--and Adora can't transform to She-Ra here!
OH HEY so the droning sound Swift Wind keeps hearing that's super fucking creepy is a Shepard Tone! (more info via wikipedia of course)
("April how do you know so much random shit?" I have ADHD and an internet connection. Also in this case specifically, Alex Hirsch once did an AMA in character as Bill Cipher, and he linked to a Shepard Tone and said it was his favorite song.)
Anyway they're attempting to fight the bug and losing
:D I KNOW WHO THIS IS :D
He scares the bug off with magic!! (Shadow Weaver did say he was a powerful sorcerer...)
dun dun DUNNNN
okay so I was confused as to how Glimmer was gonna get in there and duh SHE CAN FUCKING TELEPORT ffs
anyway Light Hope is a computer program and you're not the correct input??? you can't just order it to work pfft
YOU'RE NOT SHE-RA lol
Anyway King Micah hasn't been around other people in a loooong time and is bad with things like "personal space" lol
they're asking about Entrapta and I love that everyone in this show just Knows that Entrapta is like. Into robots. Sexually.
(I'm not looking right now but SOMEone has to have written a fic of Entrapta just making, like, really wild sex toys or fuckable robots, right? Right???)
LOL THAT'S HER ALL RIGHT
Entrapta apparently went to the center of the island but Micah is discouraging them from going. The sound Swift Wind keeps hearing is a signal of some kind from the center--
Apparently the signal is enough to draw people in and drive them mad.
poor dude
Also he thinks Glimmer is still a child and asks about Angella, and Bow and Adora just do a 😬
But they promise to take Micah with them once they find Entrapta and leave
I dunno I think it's kinda cute
Anyway as they keep walking both of them start having moments of borderline-crippling self doubt
Glimmer's killed the spiders that the Crystal Castle sets on intruders and is still trying to harass Light Hope into talking to her:
Apparently yelling that she wants to use the Heart of Etheria was the right thing to say
Back on Beast Island, the signal is getting stronger, Micah is trying to get more information about Glimmer from Bow and Adora, and also they're being hunted by critters:
There's some kind of distorted speech in the signal (which still mostly sounds like a Shepard Tone), and Swift Wind is frozen in place by it and this is happening--
CREEPY AS FUCK
D:
D:
Adora, trying to convince Micah not to give in, blurts out that Glimmer is Queen, oops
D:
D:
oh god there's a flash of light and Adora relives Angella kissing her forehead and telling her "take care of each other," then a bunch of moments of her and Glimmer, then:
"I won't give up, not on my friends, not on Etheria,"
--and she transforms into She-Ra :D
NICE!
The blast frees everyone of the vines and they're back to being themselves
"It wasn't the signal stopping me from being She-Ra, it was me. I was afraid Glimmer was right,"
"But I promise I'd take care of her--take care of everyone, and I will"
(actually you promised you'd all take care of each other, but whatever; like, this is part of her whole character arc)
Side note, She-Ra is taller than Micah by like, half a head minimum
The scary critters all run off because some huge monster shows up, the monster opens its metal jaws, and
and I've run out of images with three minutes to go pfft okay hold on

I realized recently that some dialogue suggests that lots of people, maybe everyone on Etheria, did experience the Portal Reality, but many of them just wrote it off as a dream, or a false memory, like Kyle did.
When they save Micah from Beast Island, he at first doesn't think it's real.
Which means that this might be *the real Micah*
He and Angella got to see each other again. They got to say goodbye.
As she left, she thought that he was a figment of the Portal Reality, and when she went into the Portal, and everyone woke up, he probably wrote it off as yet another dream.
But they got to see each other again.
THE WAY I CRIED
I watched without subtitles first and thought he said "I love--" but got cut off and that's really what did me in. Honestly, that's what should have been in the script. Maximum emotional damage.

see, this is another thing that pisses me off. whenever catra stans talk about catra's actions, they always always word it as “bad decisions”. this is not the first time i've seen people use this term for catra.
getting drunk before a work day is a bad decision. texting your ex is a bad decision. investing money into a scam is a bad decision.
exiling someone to their certain death is not a “bad decision”. attempted genocide is not a “bad decision”. it's a crime.
imagine if criminals actually used this as an excuse. “your honor, i shouldn't have burned down that orphanage. in hindsight, it was a bad decision.”
not to mention, this part of the plot goes nowhere. she has PTSD dreams about sending entrapta to beast island, yet she never attempts to rescue entrapta herself. she just apologizes to her once and is immediately not guilty anymore.
similarly, she never apologizes for opening the portal or killing angella in the process. what even was the point of these nightmares then? just to make us feel bad for catra?
