To celebrate Bandcamp Friday, I've updated both of my tabletop soundtrack packs, OMEN/CONSTANCE and NOMAD/VIRTUE
In a nice little twist of fate, both albums now have a similar runtime, clocking in at just over an hour each! I'm honestly just as surprised as anyone else is
Whether you're diving into the writhing abyss where eyed-things dare not crawl or warming your hands with the fire surging from your rival's overclocked heatblade, Ri47 Heavy Industries is proud to soundtrack your most memorable adventures
As is tradition, I've also knocked a little bit off of both albums' price tags. If you already own either album, you already own both of these updates for free
So what's on the menu? Check below the break!
[Featured Track: Primordial Leviathans and the Vanishing Shore]
OMEN/CONSTANCE: Update 1 takes your table into places far from the light of the sun, featuring three new songs and two new ambient worldscapes themed around pelagic horror and the cruel tide.
With the authentic sounds of survival horror at your side, let the unspeakable sea erode the walls of a normal life, leaving nothing but the smell of salt and bygone rot in its many-mouthed wake.
Whether you would uncover secrets that ought to have been left beneath their shrouds or cling desperately to the side of some great and horrible truth, let OMEN/CONSTANCE - Soundtrack for Oneiric Roleplaying be your most ardent of accompaniments as you plunge boots-first into strangling darkness.
...and whispering water.
[Featured Track: Schimmelreiter]
NOMAD/VIRTUE: Farewell Update stands wreathed in the fires of triumph, featuring three new songs themed around a grand finale and the sacrifices made to forge it, to see this mission to its end — come hell or high explosives.
The Farewell Update is intended for use as a multi-staged encounter theme for the culminating battle of your campaign. To this end, the Farewell Update includes a traditional overpowered encounter theme, a surrealistic fanfare for the last desperate push towards victory, and a bittersweet epilogue track for tying up those loose ends before your ride into the ashen sunset.
Whether you cling to hot iron and force just one more moment's advantage, steady yourself against the shearing wind to pull the trigger one last time, or fall from the arms of a loving orbit to save just one life, let NOMAD/VIRTUE - Soundtrack for Mechanised Roleplaying be your copilot as you tear yourself free, rising from the wreckage to defy the best laid plans of mechanised gods and electronic devils.
-
Just over half a year from the album's original release date, after two free updates and well into its sequel's lifespan, Ri47 Heavy Industries decided to prepare a third and final update to our debut soundtrack as a surprise to those who got us here in the first place
From our house to yours, thank you for your continued support. - Rin

Actual Play with Austin [S3E1]
In the very first episode of Season 3, we chat with Austin (Tumblr's very own @austinramsaygames) about literal truckloads of cryptocurrrency, designing high-level enemies, and the importance of in-game downtime. Austin is an accomplished game designer and brings a ton of helpful advice to the conversation. Unfortunately, we do tank our prospects for a Tesla sponsorship.
A heads up that this episode swerves into a discussion of imperialist military violence in TTRPG campaigns and its parallels in the real world.
Go check out the Beam Saber system, which Austin designed. (To hear more about this system, go listen to last season's interview with Erika, Tumblr's very own @fadingroots. Erika also provided the incredible and intense intro for this episode!) Talking about the Rush Wars supplement made us want to rewatch the Fast and Furious series. Austin also tells us about the CalazCon actual play. It's a huge ambitious actual play project, and we're excited to listen to the whole thing! While you're at it, go check out Austin's itch.io page.
Austin also mentions two podcasts:
Blowback which is about US military adventurism
The Great Gundam Project, which covers all of Gundam in production order
If you like the music on the show, go check out more of Reilly's music.

NOMAD/VIRTUE - Soundtrack for Mechanised Roleplaying [Act 1]
This album includes four original songs and two alternative arrangements blending mechanical undertones with a rustic sense of adventure. Additionally, this special release includes five sound cues intended to accent your tableside adventures.
Whether you're freelancing or engaging in the more evergreen trappings of military mecha piloting, let NOMAD/VIRTUE complement your fireteam's soaring highs and crashing lows.
Also probably compatible with non-mecha ttrpgs. Rin hasn't tested this and can't safely confirm or deny it.

Lancer RPG is cool
But it feels like a very incomplete RPG system, because it only really focuses on the mecha and makes that aspect really crunchy and mechanically deep However the human and non-mech combat side of the game is very narrative play focused with few mechanics or depth of any kinda outside third party supplements and at that point it be better to just slot in a different TTRPG to handle the non-mecha side of things So I really hope if they ever make a 2nd edition they have expanded rules for roles outside of Lancer (Mech) pilot
#lancer rpg#Mecha game#Mech#Lancer#TTRPG#I really like the idea of using the lancer ruleset but for being a space fighter pilot#also the idea of having missions part on foot#what good is a mech TTRPG if I cannot simulate Armor Hunter Mellowlink#Armor Hunter Mellowlink#armored trooper votoms#I know Beam Saber also exists but I'm broke and can't afford the PDF but I already own Lancer and I think it's built in setting#I just wish it's designers like making mechanics and rules for their setting as much as they like to make mechs for it#I've also not played yet but still want too#Lancer rpg wishlist

Hi! I was wondering: how do you choose what system to use? How did you find Beam Saber? there seems like there are so many options, i want to start my own podcast but I can not decide which one are the best for that thank you!
Hello!
So, I think the conventional wisdom would be "play whatever is fun for you to run, and use that for your podcast" but after thinking about it a little bit I don't actually know that would recommend that in every case.
Specifically, I would recommend any system that doesn't tend to get too stuck in the rules. Specifically, avoid systems that rely on battlemaps and lots of rolling to resolve combats. (I know that this kinda counts DnD, literally the most popular RPG out but uh... I don't think it's good for podcasts! That's my problematic opinion)
As for recommendations...
I am by no means an expert on tabletop systems, so my go-to recommendations are Forged in the Dark games (like blades in the dark, Beam Saber, etc) and Powered by the Apocalypse games (dungeon world, the sprawl, monster of the week).
These two families have great bones, and have been a real pleasure to play for me and my group. As far as how I found these games, I actually only knew about them from listening to Friends at the Table.
Beam Saber and Dungeon World both were introduced to me through there. Being able to actually hear them get played really helped me understand how they worked in a show.
At the end of the day, it really depends on the type of game you want to run - and what you want to highlight on your show. The recommendations I put forth above are because I really care the most about rules that enable stories, more than stories that enable the rules. (Particularly for a podcast. I love a nice crunchy system off-mic).
I hope that helps! I will give a shout out to the r/rpg reddit which is a great resource for describing the genre, tone, and style you want for a game and having a group of people pitch you ideas.
I've found a lot of cool systems through there.
Thanks for writing in!

39 - Making a Lab Experiment-turned Ace Pilot in Beam Saber
Beam Saber is a Forged in the Dark system by @austinramsaygames that lets you live out your mecha anime fantasies, if you're into that kind of thing. If you need a fresh idea for a character, why not consider playing as Cedric, the mildly psychic cat who operates his mech via telepathic connection?
NOTE: This episode does not constitute an endorsement of CAT's actions in Gaza on behalf of Israel. We here at the Literal Cat Podcast would strongly prefer a free Palestine. Honestly if I'd known about the connection when we recorded this, we probably wouldn't have done it. You can stay informed by checking the latest from the BDS movement here.

hey! it's bandcamp friday! that means everyone is about to start advertising at you. that means I'm also about to do that.
I made a mecha ttrpg album a little while back. as of now, it has two more tracks than it did when it initially released, bringing it to 25 minutes if you count the first new track, Beyond Wrath, and 39 minutes if you count the new unreasonably lengthy ambient track, Thousandfold Coils
if you already bought the album, as always, you don't have to buy it again to receive the new tracks. think of them as early holiday gifts
if you haven't bought the album, I hope you like erhu, because I habitually used it in nearly every single track without fully realising I was doing that. tehe
thanks for your support!

Some game design autsim for today, I've been listening to Friends at the Table's Merielda as well as playing in a Beam Saber game and there's something so interesting about Blades in the Dark/Forged in the Dark (FitD) and item mechanics
So one really interesting thing that this system is built for, is to abstract the fantasy of planning, most importantly in making the players seem good at it, and it's done in some really interesting ways mainly, the mechanic I'm especially interested in, load
so the thing about inventory in FitD games is that you don't determine what you bring before a mission, you only determine how much you bring. The way you determine items is discovered through play. And that adds such interesting flavor to how inventory works. In other systems, I've had the common experience of buying a bunch of items to prepare for a quest but then never using them and FitD solves that so elegantly.
Came across some officials and seek to trick them into letting you through? Well my character planned for this and I'll declare some fine paperwork as some of my items Is your ally falling out of a speeding train that flies? Good thing my character took this risk into account, I'll declare a climbing kit and throw it over to them to make sure they don't fall into the city below
Declaring items as you go is such a simple system but it really helps drive home the fantasy that FiTD games try to encapsulate, in that your characters are professionals who plan and prepare for missions.
That and the flashback system (Being able to declare flashbacks in order to give you an advantage at the cost of taking some stress. Ex: I run into the train's engineers, I'll declare a flashback that in preparation for this mission, I found out the bar these people drink at and had drinks with the fellow, making him see me as a friend instead of an enemy) really really mesh so so well together to fulfill such a fun and cool fantasy where like, your characters really do feel like professionals at what they do
#kat game design thoughts#been thinking alot about game design so might start a habit of posting some of my thoughts here#I find it really fun! :3#shoutouts to my beam saber game and merielda for examples#just gah it's such a cool systemm#I want to put it in every game /hj#game design#ttrpg#rpg#forged in the dark#blades in the dark#beam saber
