@endreal that’s..... wow. I mean I thought the lady here coming onto the music segment and singing the phone number over and over was bad....that’s super cringey @beafraidofjesus yeahhh I absolutely feel you there. I listen in to WABE for the music segment where Lois Reitzes talks to less known artists and Lois is the reason classical music is still played here so that’s cool to me, but I can’t listen beyond that. Tom Ashbrook’s “The Point” makes my eyeballs twitch. I absolutely do not donate for that reason as well. Blehhhhhh

Are you ever afraid to post jokes on the internet in fear of them stealing it? Also, in posting jokes on the internet, what are your thoughts on telling them on stage? I feel like people will think I stole them??? So conflicted.
Well, I mostly perform improv so I don’t tell a lot of jokes on stage and every funny thing I do is gone in an instant only to be replaced by the next funny thing.
I don’t really care if my jokes get stolen. It’s the Internet and people behave poorly here, so that’s a risk you have to take.
Rob Delaney has a really great perspective on having jokes stolen which I found in this article
“I had the good fortune some years ago to have a joke stolen from me and performed on TV by a comic I knew. At first I was upset, but then I realized that, poor etiquette aside, the guy was funny and he would’ve been on TV with or without my joke. I also realized that if I couldn’t immediately write several more jokes to replace it, then I wasn’t funny, and I had no business calling myself a comedian. So I forced myself to make a mental adjustment and decide that the guy had done me a giant favor. And he had. I became much less precious about material. Of course I’d be “proud” of a good joke, but I knew to thicken my skin and just produce. My silent motto when I began to encounter joke theft on Twitter was “Go ahead and take ‘em, motherfucker. Here come five more.” My goal as a comedian became to be a Delta Force Operator of humor that you could throw in an empty room with nothing and I could make something funny and kill people with it. This remains my goal.”
I’ve adopted this mentality.
And as far as performing jokes on stage that I originally posted on the Internet, I wouldn’t be afraid that people would think I stole them. First of all, there is still a very large divide between people who go to live comedy shows, and people who use the Internet heavily enough to recognize a joke originally posted on Tumblr. Second of all, I didn’t steal them.
That being said, I don’t think a lot of the jokes and content I’ve created for Tumblr/Internet would translate well to a stand up comedy routine. So I’m not sure I would even try it.
If I were you, I’d follow Rob Delaney’s lead and treat your jokes as disposable. Just crank out as many as you can and get them in front of as many audience members (online and onstage) as you can.
