jumping in on this discussion but like, in five years was also marketed as a romance (with the assumption of a happily ever after) and it ... was very much not that + seconding that beach read (all of emily henry's adult books including happy place, i'd argue — maybe pwmov is the exception) is also ... very much not a rom com!! i don't work in marketing/publicity but i feel like there's this increasing trend of just whittling down books to tropes or whatever is marketable (esp. on social media where you have limited minutes/character count/etc) but that only results in readers picking up things they're unprepared for/end up being disappointed by which ... ultimately serves no one!! just ... frustrating!

yes cossette!! the other example that jumps out to me is the no-show by beth o'leary! i haven't personally read it but i remember the uproar about it considering the book (pubbed as a "smart new rom-com") contains major character death that isn't marketed anywhere. my thoughts on the big trope scare are very complicated but i fully agree with you on the tropes thing here. publishing companies are relying on lighthearted, reductive tropes to market complex books and in turn essentially blindside readers who don't know to expect those complex narratives
