In 2022, I had the most travel filled fall I’ve had in a while. Between a wedding in Virginia Beach in September, NYC/CT trip in October, longboat key in November, and California, Orlando, and CT in December, it was a lot of fun but also exhausting. I decided 10 days may be my max for consecutive travel going forward and after all that I wanted to spend some time in Chicago in my new apartment!

The nyc/CT trip was much needed family and friend time after my recent breakup with Hugo and was a good opportunity to get out of the condo. First, I spent a few days in midtown Manhattan at Megan’s new apartment. It was a great central location so we were able to easily access several different neighborhoods. I went for runs in Central Park and down to the Brooklyn bridge and battery park, we also enjoyed bagels from our go to ess-a-bagel and went to my old neighborhood for the famous egg bagels. We also went to the union square market and I tried out Megan’s new favorite workout class solid core. My abs were sore for days! We also made a special trip to carol gardens neighborhood in Brooklyn for the famous lucalis pizza. We spent a lot of time waiting for the pizza but I really enjoyed exploring this cute Brooklyn neighborhood. I hope to explore more of Brooklyn next time I visit.

After my time with Megan, I went to stay with Joanna in flushing for a few days. We went out to dinner a few times and it was great to catch up. My dad picked me up from Joanna’s on my last day and we went to visit my grandma in the hospital. It was heartbreaking to see her in that condition but I’m glad I got to see her before she passed a few months later - I know she appreciated it as she would not stop talking about to her aides the rest of the week.

Then I spent a few days with my family and hiking Talcott mountain with the pups before heading back to Chicago to get ready for my upcoming move!

After my move, I had multiple weddings - Mikayla and Jake’s in Indiana and Kyler and Sarah’s in Chicago. Kyler and Sarah’s wedding weekend was such a blast with all the events and several close friends. And it was awesome to be local for it!

Then the next bout of travel began. I had 10 days in longboat key for thanksgiving and my moms 60th birthday weekend of events. We went on a family boat ride and my dad threw a party at the beach for all their friends.

After longboat key, I headed to San Francisco for a week long immersive course on brand advocacy for my graduate program.

I had a free day Sunday to explore before class started Monday so my friends Haley, Joanna, abbey and I all rented bikes and headed over to Sausalito to walk around and explore. It was a super cute marina town and it was nice to see again as I had gone there with my mom when I was 15. This time around, I stayed in the downtown area where all the offices are so we were close to class each day. The homeless situation there was pretty crazy, lots of mentally ill more so than Chicago. While I was there throughout the week, I explored marina district for dinner one night, did a run up to the painted ladies one morning before class, and walked around the salesforce park and area near the classroom. It was nice to have a week to “live” in a new city but i was so ready to get home after almost 3 weeks away at the end.

After that I had a work trip to Disney world and Christmas in Connecticut - nothing too new for those trips so I won’t go into detail.

Christmas 2018

Merry Christmas and Greetings from Wilmington, NC.  

I am trying something new this year, blogging my Christmas letter.  I switched to using this app, tumblr, for my Travels with Snowbirds blog, and now will try to get everyone on board for my Christmas letter.  Greetings from the NC coast where it has been anything but a normal year!

It started with my usual RV trip to Florida for January and February.  This year I spent a few days at Disney World with friends, above, L-R Martha, Barb, Lesley.  Here we are at The 3D Muppet movie, an all time favorite.  I actually did two trips to Disney World in January, I RVd there with Joanne for a few days, and that is always fun to do, it is a glorious campground.

While in the Orlando area, we had a Lenox Hill Nursing School class of 67 mini reunion.  Here we are at House of Blues in Disney Springs, L-R, me, Barbara, Lorraine, Pat and Joanna.  I hope we can turn this into an annual event.

My 6th grandchild was born March 22.  It was a planned home birth, and here all are just moments after Lucie Marie’s birth, in the middle of the night, in a 12 inch snowstorm.  Do you all remember I left NJ to avoid the snow?  Something about March 22 and a snowstorm is just wrong.  The midwife barely made it, and all turned out beautifully.

This is my favorite picture from 2018, and I didn’t even take it, Kristine did.  This is 13 year old Maggie and we titled this Meggie Sherpa (yes, Meggie.)  If you count, there are seven bags, a double seated stroller, and Hudson, on their way to a family vacation.  I wonder why she was not able to put Lucie in the stroller.......

A sad part of our year was the passing of my stepmother, Shirley McGrath.  “Nanny” was truly a grandmother to all my kids and they have very fond memories of doing fun things with her and Papa. She passed peacefully in the winter, shortly after Kristine and her family were able to visit her.  We planned a memorial service after the thaw in the spring.  This is the peaceful spot she was laid to rest, and we all sat on the grass toasting her with her favorite, Seagram’s and Coke.

After the service, Shirley ‘took us out to eat.”  We found a great little bistro in a small town near the cemetery and told funny Shirley stories with my stepbrother, Cless, and his wife, Jean.  It was nice to be all together again.

After our family time, we visited the graves of other family members in the area, and stopped at ‘the family farm’ and visited more relatives and told stories of the barn, tractors, chicken coops, and excellent whiskey sours.  This is my #2 favorite picture of 2018, and I did not take it either.

Maggie made her movie debut, playing the role of the younger Linda Chorney in her movie, “When I Sing.”  Here they are at the NJ premiere.  

We celebrated Ben’s 12th birthday in July with the candles that never seemed to go out.  

Maggie and Lilly went to UNC Chapel Hill for Field Hockey camp.  They were able to room together, but played on different teams.  Scary that in just a few years they really will be in college.

Here’s Ben taking Hudson on a Stand Up Paddle Board ride.....In this case a Sit Down Paddle Board ride.  Kristine and Lou’s Wrightsville Beach house was on the intracoastal this year and we were able to do this and tubing and fishing right from the attached dock.  You can tell Hudson was telling Ben to ‘go faster.’

John and I spent the day exploring Bald Head Island, a truly beautiful place.....a subtropical island off the NC coast which has a beachy desert area and a dense forest as well.

Here we are together again for a family wedding.  Samantha, daughter of Richard and Lisa, my kids father, and his wife, got married in September.  I was most thoughtfully invited.  All my grandkids were in the wedding, even Lucie had a ‘feature.’  Here Sutton, 11, Ben, 12, and Tim are all slicked up for one one of the pre wedding festivities.

But the biggest news of the year was Hurricane Florence.  The storm that came and hung around for 3 days before moving on.  It rained 20 inches at my house.  It landed as a Cat 1, rapidly downgraded to TS, but just stayed over our heads forever.  Here’s Ben surveying my backyard, his face says it all.  See the cracked tree above his head?  Check out the next picture.

In January, I was quiet. I took a lot of walks around Savannah's historic district, listened to podcasts, remembered to breathe. I drank orange tea and went bowling.  Savannah in January is crisp, but never truly cold. It's brisk and sunny, and it never freezes. The fountains continue to run and the people walk around with their coats unbuttoned.

In February, I surprised Ben with a weekend at Disney World. We bought wildly overpriced mouse ears and grinned like mad the entire time, even when Ben was vomiting uncontrollably into a trash can. I felt eight years old and thrilled again, waving at all the princesses as the parade went by. The next week, a man ran a red light and totaled our only car. Ben was shaken but fine. I learned a lot in the process of searching for and buying another. One evening we went out to the beach with lanterns and and a bottle of wine. The shore was covered in thick foam and we walked until the light faded.

In March, I mostly struggled. My health issues were worsening. I visited the doctor, but felt lost and unheard. In the afternoons, I walked down to the river and watched the boats go by. I strolled the cobblestone streets in my beat-up black flats. On St. Patrick's Day, two people swore at me while I was doing my job, and I swore to myself I'd get out of customer service as soon as possible. I was exhausted.

In April, Sam and Julia came to visit. We took them to the beach where we drank boxed wine while floating in the waves, and went out for Mexican food. I pretended not to be ill, but I knew something was terribly wrong, although I assumed it was a bad spell of IBS. Shortly after they left, I was diagnosed with and treated for c. difficile, a brutal and potentially deadly infection. I thought more than once that I really might die. In May, mostly recovered, we spent a weekend in New York, visiting friends and celebrating five years together. We picnicked in Central Park, and had our picture taken in DUMBO by the river. It was cloudy, and on our last morning Lily, and Ben, and I all got soaked trying to reach a restaurant for brunch in Cobble Hill. We took shelter in a charming bookstore, new since we left the city, and I twisted my wet hair up under Ben's baseball cap, acutely aware of how everything goes on whether you're there or not. In June, we went to baseball games and Forsyth park. Emma came for a visit -- we talked about men and texting and watched too much Southern Charm Savannah. Ben and I visited St. Augustine, Florida, where we spent two nights sleeping on a beautiful, docked sailboat and drank the best cocktails I have ever tasted at an enormous vodka distillery. Florida is hot as hell in June, but the sunsets are rose-colored and beautiful. 

In July, I got promoted to the first job where I've ever felt comfortable and mostly content. I stopped dreading going to work, for the most part, which felt like a miracle and a triumph. Back in New York, we attended the wedding of two dear friends, accompanied by one of the most awe-inspiring storms I have ever witnessed. We drove through a flood to reach their reception where the skies immediately cleared into a rainbow, like in a movie.

In August, we went back to Orlando, accompanied by our friend Marthur, for Ben's birthday. We went out for tapas, rode water slides, and spent an entire afternoon drinking champagne, cracking jokes, and swimming in the hotel pool. Later, I celebrated my bachelorette weekend on Tybee Island with 5 friends who generously flew to Georgia for me. We wore silly sunglasses, soaked in the sunshine, and swam in the ocean. I got stung by a jellyfish so badly, every local who saw the sting in the weeks after proclaimed it the worst one they'd ever seen. Four months later, there is still a faint scar, of which I am oddly proud.

In September, evacuating from a hurricane that never hit, we drove all the way to Charlottesville, Virginia, with my wedding dress draped across the backseat of the car, and crashed on an air mattress at Kay's apartment. I was approaching near-panic levels of wedding-related anxiety, but the hours spent in the car and the weekend away calmed me. We were married on the second to last Sunday in September, at the prettiest horse farm in central New York. It was everything I dreamed it would be, except considerably hotter. We danced all night long in front of an enormous fan, and in the morning we flew to New York, and then Paris. There we ate in cafes and wandered cathedrals and read books by the Seine. I've never been happier. 

In October, we flew from Paris to Barcelona, where I celebrated my 31st birthday exploring the labyrinthine streets of the gothic quarter. We bought chocolates and cheeses at the open air market, went to see a traditional flamenco performance, and drank our weight in sangria. I wore a beautiful turquoise necklace that I bought at an antique market in Paris. I tried to figure out how we could move to Spain.

In November, we settled back into real life. We cooked a marvelous Thanksgiving feast, bought a Christmas tree, and decked every room in the house with twinkle lights. We hung a pine wreath on the red front door and burned balsam-scented candles. I visited Nashville for work, but didn't see as much of it as I would have liked. 

In December, we wrote thank you notes and drank hot cocoa. We visited our local cat cafe. We talked a lot about the future. We spent our first Christmas away from our families. Ben is also my family now. We're a small family, but a good one.

Now we are here, in a cabin in the middle of the woods, somewhere between Covington and Macon. It’s quite possibly the most tranquil place I have ever been. We watched the sunrise from the bedroom. I’m drinking jasmine tea and wearing a heavy sweater. There are cinnamon buns in the oven and tapestries on the walls. We’re halfway through a puzzle, spread out over the floor of the loft. Yesterday we listened to every Beach House album and then every Pure Bathing Culture album and I fell asleep on the sofa before nine, with the Cocteau Twins singing in my dreams.

Ben teases, saying he’s optimistic that we’ll stay awake until midnight tonight, and I laugh because it doesn’t really matter at all.

Paul John Knowles (1946-1974)

Paul John Knowles, also known as the Casanova Killer, was an American serial killer who was linked to the deaths of 18 people in 1974, but claimed to have killed 35. He was born on April 17, 1946 in Orlando, Florida. His father gave him up after he was convicted of a petty crime, and Knowles ended up in a series of foster homes and reformatories. Knowles himself was incarcerated for the first time at the age of 19, and in the following years spent more time in prison. In early 1974 Knowles was serving a sentence at Raiford Prison in Florida, now known as Florida State Prison, when he started communicating with San Francisco divorcee Angela Kovic, who went to the prison to visit Knowles. After the couple got engaged, she became vital in getting Knowles released by paying for a lawyer. After he was released, Knowles flew straight to California to be with her. After being warned by a psychic of a dangerous man in her life, Covic ended the relationship and called off the wedding. Devastated by the rejection, Knowles claimed to have killed 3 people on the streets of San Francisco the night Covic ended their relationship. He returned to Jacksonville, Florida and was soon arrested after stabbing a bartender during a fight, but picked a lock in his cell and escaped on July 26, 1974.

The cross-country murder spree of Paul John Knowles started in Jacksonville the night he escaped from jail. He broke into 65-year-old Alice Curtis’s home, binding and gagging her before ransacking her house for money and valuables. Curtis choked to death on her dentures, but it is not known if this occurred before or after Knowles left. He also stole her Dodge Dart, but realised police had already connected him to the crime and were advertising him as a wanted fugitive. When he stopped to abandon the car, he saw family acquaintances, Lillian, 11, and Mylette Anderson, 11. Scared that they would identify him he kidnapped them, strangled them and buried their bodies in a nearby swamp. Not long afterwards, Knowles claimed he picked up a teenage girl who was hitchhiking and killed her – she remained unidentified for decades. On December 21, 2011, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified her as Ima Jean Sanders, 13, who had run away from Beaumont, Texas in July 1974 to Warner Robins, Georgia and then disappeared on August 1, 1974. The day after the Anderson sisters disappeared, Knowles met Marjorie Howie, 49, in Atlantic Beach, Florida. He ended up in her apartment (it is not known if she invited him or was forced to take him) where he strangled her with a nylon stocking. He stole her television set, which he would later give to a former girlfriend. Near the end of August Knowles was in Musella, Georgia, and broke into the home of Kathie Sue Pierce, who was there with her 3-year-old son. He used a telephone cord to strangle her – he did not harm the child. On September 3, 1974, Knowles entered Scott’s Inn (a roadside pub near Lima, Ohio) where he met 32-year-old accountant executive for Ohio Power Company William Bates. The bartender, who knew Bates, recalled him and a young redheaded man having several drinks and leaving together. Bates’ wife reported him missing and police realised his car was missing too. Close to the bar, police found an abandoned Dodge Dart that they traced back to Alice Curtis. In October, the naked corpse of William Bates was found – he had been strangled and dumped in the woods. Now driving Bates’ car, Knowles moved on to a campground in Ely, Nevada. It was there, on September 18, 1974, that he bound and shot 2 elderly campers, Emmett and Lois Johnson. Because this murder seemed random it was a cold case until Knowles confessed, although he did use their credit cards for a short period to pay for his expenses.

On September 21, 1974, Knowles’ killing spree continued in Seguin, Texas, where he encountered strangled motorcyclist Charlynn Hicks. He abducted and raped her before strangling her with her own pantyhose. He dragged her body through a barbed-wire fence – it was discovered 4 days later. He then travelled to Birmingham, Alabama, where he met beautician Ann Dawson on September 23. It isn’t known whether he abducted her or she travelled with him willingly, but she did pay the bills while they travelled together until he killed her on September 29. Knowles claimed to have dumped her corpse in the Mississippi River, but it was never found. Knowles arrived in Marlborough, Connecticut in mid-October 1974, where his serial killings. He entered the house of Karen Wine and her daughter Dawn, 16, on October 16, where he bound and raped them before killing them with a nylon stocking. The only thing missing from the home seemed to be a tape recorder. By October 18, Knowles had travelled to Woodford, Virginia, where he broke into the house of Doris Hosey, 53, and shot her with her husband’s rifle before wiping the prints from the gun and placing it next to her body. Police found no signs of robbery to indicate a motive in the case. Still driving William Bates’ car, Knowles picked up 2 hitchhikers in Key West, Florida. He intended to kill them both but his plan went wrong when a police officer stopped him for a traffic violation. Not recognising Knowles, the officer let him off with a warning. Shaken, he dropped his potential victims off in Miami, Florida, and soon afterwards contacted his lawyer, who suggested Knowles surrender. He rejected this idea, but arranged a meeting with him that lasted just long enough to hand over a taped confession (made on the tape recorder stolen from Karen Wine’s home). He then left town before police noticed he was there. On November 6 in Milledgeville, Georgia, Knowles met Carswell Carr and was invited back to his home to spend the night. While sharing a drink, Knowles stabbed Carr to death and then strangled his 15-year-old daughter. After killing her, Knowles tried to have sex with her corpse, but was unsuccessful. After fleeing from Macon, Knowles was also suspected of the November 2 murder of hitchhiker Edward Hilliard, who was found in nearby woods, and his friend Debbie Griffin, whose body has never been found.

On November 8, while bar-hopping in Atlanta, Knowles met Sandy Fawkes, a British journalist – she was impressed by his “gaunt good looks”. The pair spent the night together, but according to Fawkes, he was repeatedly unable to perform when they tried to have sex. This suggests impotence when it came to willing companions. The 2 parted on November 10, but the next day Susan Mackenzie, an acquaintance of Fawkes’, was picked up by Knowles and he demanded sex from her at gunpoint. She escaped and reported the incident to police, but when patrolmen attempted to stop him, Knowles threatened them with a sawn-off shotgun and escaped. Days later, in West Palm Beach, Florida, Knowles broke into the home of disabled woman Beverly Mabee. He abducted her sister and stole their car. From there, he travelled to Fort Pierce, Florida and for reasons never discovered, he released his hostage unharmed. On the morning of November 17, Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Eugene Campbell recognised the stolen car near Perry and tried to make an arrest, but after Knowles was pulled over he managed to wrestle the officer’s gun away from him. He took Campbell hostage and drove away in his patrol car, later using the sirens to stop James Meyer, a motorist, in order to ditch the Highway Patrol vehicle and continue his journey in a less noticeable one. Now with 2 hostages, Knowles took the men to a remote wooded area in Pulaski County, Georgia and handcuffed them to a tree. He shot each of them in the head at close range. Shortly afterwards Knowles tried to drive through a police roadblock in Henry County, Georgia, but lost control of the car and crashed into a tree. He escaped on foot and shot at officers pursuing on foot. A chaotic chase ensued, with Knowles being followed by dogs, law enforcement officers from multiple agencies, and helicopters. Knowles was finally cornered by an armed civilian with a shotgun a few miles from the search area, who took Knowles to a nearby home where he called police. Knowles was outside the perimeter given for the manhunt and would have escaped without the actions of this man. Once in custody, Knowles claimed responsibility for 35 murders, but only 20 were ever confirmed.

On December 18, 1974, Sheriff Earl Lee and Agent Ronnie Angel from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation were driving down Interstate 20 with Knowles handcuffed in the back. They were en route to Henry County, Georgia, where Knowles had admitted to ditching a handgun he had taken from Florida State Trooper Charles Eugene Campbell, later killing him with it. The SBI reported: “Knowles grabbed Lee’s handgun, discharging it through the holster in the process and while Lee was struggling with Knowles and attempting to keep control of the vehicle, Angel fired three shots into Knowles’ chest, killing him instantly.”

Charlie Brandt part 2 Brandt also alluded to an incident that took place a few days before the shooting, near the end of his family's annual Christmas vacation in Florida, in which Herbert shot and killed their dog while the two were hunting. Three separate psychiatric evaluations failed to determine what triggered the shooting. One of Brandt's psychiatrists, Ronald Pancner, later recounted, "Basically, I was looking for mental illness. And he wasn't showing the signs and symptoms of serious mental illness, which I thought was what the court wanted to know." Because he was too young to be tried for murder under Indiana law, Brandt spent one year at a psychiatric hospital before being released back into the custody of his family in June 1972. The family never spoke of the incident again. Until 2004, Brandt's two younger sisters lived under the impression that their mother had been killed in a car accident. Shortly after Brandt's release, his family relocated to Ormond Beach, Florida. One year later, Brandt's father (who had remarried) and younger sisters moved back to Indiana, while Brandt and Angela stayed behind in the care of their grandparents. In 1984, Brandt received a degree in electronics and became a radar specialist for Ford Aerospace in Astor. In 1986, he married his girlfriend Theresa "Teri" Helfrich. No relatives were invited to their wedding. His sister Angela and her husband Jim had advised Brandt to tell Teri about the murder of his mother, but it is unclear whether or not he ever did. The couple settled in a beach house on Big Pine Key, the southernmost portion of the Florida Keys, in 1989. On September 2, 2004, Brandt and Teri evacuated from their home ahead of Hurricane Ivan. Their niece, Michelle Lynn Jones, invited them to stay at her residence near Orlando. Throughout the visit, Jones kept in regular contact with her mother, Mary Lou, as well as several friends. On the evening of September 13, one of Jones' friends, Lisa Emmons, was scheduled to visit her house. Tiger Woods's ex-wife is trying to make another financial score seven years after she walked away from her marriage with the star golfer with $100 million, DailyMail.com can reveal.

Elin Nordegren, 37, the mother of Woods's two children, has listed her beachfront townhouse just north of Palm Beach for $2.2 million.

If she gets anything near that price, Nordegren will have doubled her money on what's obviously an investment property she never lived in.

The Swedish model bought the two-bedroom, three and a half-bathroom unit at the San Remo Townhouses, a small complex in the tiny beach resort town of Juno Beach, in May 2011 for $1 million.

According to public records, Nordegren sunk more than $100,000 into the three-story townhouse, according to a permit for a major renovation that included the shoring up of beams and columns.

In 2014, she plunked down another $100K for new flooring, fixtures, trims and closets in the 1,800-square-foot unit.

The condo is being sold with furniture from 'local designers' where whites and teal blues match the foamy surf of the Atlantic Ocean in the background.

The description of the property also mentions top-of-the-line appliances and spacious bedrooms.

The mother of two is also conducting the sale without a realtor, which could save her more than $120,000 in commission.  

DailyMail.com contacted the unit's owner through the listing website, forsalebyowner.com, and Karen Hamer, Nordegren's assistant, returned the call.

She confirmed that the townhouse is for sale but declined comment when asked about Nordegren.

'No, no, no, I can't comment,' she said before hanging up.

Nordegren, who owns the apartment through a trust managed by Dennis Belcher, the lawyer who handled her bank-busting divorce from Woods, first listed the condo August 25 for $2.4 million. The price was changed three days later.

Most residents are elderly retirees from the Northeast who use them as winter homes. None of Nordegren's neighbors were home Monday and appear to have yet to move back for the winter.

In addition to the unit on the market, she owns another condo in the building that she bought in 2015 for $1.9 million, according to records, but it's not listed for sale.

Realtors in the area said Nordegren could get the money she is seeking.

'I think it's well worth what she is asking for,' said Rob Thomson, owner of Waterfront Properties. 'It's massively renovated with a designer who does most celebrity homes. And Juno Beach is in strong demand. It's a small town with its own police force and great security.'

Designer Lisa Peterson confirmed she decorated the townhouse after Nordegren asked her to make it look like a beach property.

'It was for her family when they come from Sweden to visit her,' Peterson said. 'She was very involved with the interior design and she wanted every detail just so. She was here every day working for us.'

In all, Nordegren used more than $25 million from her marital settlement with Woods to buy real estate in the Palm Beach area.
