BEFORE READING “the rot of my blood”

It is highly important you read this note before reading the series.

I want to note, as a non-Black writer, that Sinners is a movie by and for Black people. The purpose of this fic is not to divert any focus from that.

In the film, Ryan Coogler uses vampirism as a metaphor for colonization. Despite being colonized, Remmick inflicts the same oppression on another group of people without even realizing it. Here is a post with a better, brief summary of his character if you’d like to know more.

I came up with the idea for this series because I wanted to expand on the idea of vampirism according to Coogler. Without giving too much about the series away, Remmick’s journey as a vampire throughout the years is to show how he isn’t inherently evil, but his vampirism—centuries of seeing oppression and hate throughout the world—ignites the evil we see in Sinners.

In this series, he suffers what we’d think of as unimaginable loss. There are moments where you might even feel sorry for him, but please note that I didn’t write this to sympathize with him.

This series is not meant to be in defense of Remmick. It will not highlight him as a hero or a protagonist. You will see that I initially write him as a good person—the point of this fic is to show how he changes. This series should serve as insight into Remmick’s early life as a vampire so that we can see his progression into evil.

All that being said, this fic might be historically inaccurate simply because of timelines. I’ve added different elements to this form of vampirism (daylight rings, slow aging, etc). The events of Sinners still take place. There will be religious language and dark content in the chapters. There will be smut and sexual themes and content.

The reader insert I use will remain as general as possible. The series takes place in a different time period, but I want to note that the reader is not AT ALL written to be white. This is to ensure that anyone can read and enjoy the series.

Lastly, a reminder that any hate or negative comments will be blocked. Anyone is more than welcome to message me, and I am more than open to any way I can make my writing better.

I love that in headcanon you believe price is very divorced which is very funny and I kind of agree, but in your AUs he’s often the wife guy™️ with Duck, witch, Demon Darling, etc.. it’s very fun to see how you push and pull his character in AUs and how you see him in canon.

Ah this is why I love fanfiction though!!! I can make arguments either way. I see Price's devotion to the military, his loyalty to his men, his fierce desire to protect people and create a peaceful world that doesn't need men like him anymore, and think "that guy would burn down the world for the people he loves, he would devote himself entirely to a partner and would love his children even if his work kept him away from them." But in the same way I can look at all of that and say "this man would sacrifice his family for the world, and not once would guilt or regret touch him because he would tell himself it was for the greater good."

Personally I want him to dote on me, and I think his capacity as a romantic lead is Fantastic. Price is another one that if you take them out of the military and give them something else to focus their energy onto it'll make them a perfect spouse, but if you're not his singular goal and focus he's awful as a partner. So you will notice that with Duck and Witch he is no longer in the military, and thus is able to devote his time and attention to something else. I think with Duck part of their synergy also comes from both of them being very driven and career motivated people; if I was ever going to change the cowboy story this would probably make Goose incredibly alienated from them and resentful of their work.

but I generally write happy ending type fic, so unless it's something I think is funny (like Price being the most divorced man on earth) I tend to go with the more optimistic and hopeful read on the COD men's characters.

i can answer op's building having no place in combat question! in the minecraft game design handbook (highly recommend everyone read it, it's very short and gives a lot of insights on why the game is the way it is), they state that "bad things happen...but it's always the player's fault". they won't ever create a mob or feature that will destroy your hard earned work in a way that you cannot prevent. withers are spawned in by the player, creepers occur when you don't light things up, etc.

i would also argue that while building is a huge chunk of minecraft, it isn't it's only strength! combat is actually a huge part of the franchise, and it's often more appealing to a wider audience, especially when it comes to kids (this isn't saying that people don't like building or that it's okay for minecraft to brush off that part of the sandbox aspect, just that building isn't the only thing that appeals to people who play minecraft). some people are proud of their ugly dirt houses and wooden towers.

plus, minecraft is also a game about exploration! in fact, I would argue that's the main draw people have to it when they start playing. when you spawn into minecraft, you have an entire world you can travel through, and often before you do any building, you take a few hours to go and see where you've landed.

the franchise thing feels a bit...off topic? Irrelevant? To the argument. minecraft is the core game, where you can build anything you want. the other games are meant to explore other options. they're not trying to make another minecraft, they're trying to make a dungeon crawler, or a choose your own adventure story, or a strategy game.

tl;dr: minecraft is a building game, but it's also a combat game and an exploration game, and while it could definitely highlight more of the building, it isn't the only feature of the game, and people can play however they want without having to feel restricted to the building. to change that would be to take away the freedom that comes with playing minecraft.

IMO the biggest, deepest, most fundamental flaw with modern (survival) Minecraft is that building has ultimately no place in combat, and vice versa. This is a goddamned building game, why aren't there any mobs I have to defeat by building? Why are there so few* mobs that affect the terrain? Why aren't there any incentives to build better bases? (Moreover, why is a dirt hut strong enough -- and not just strong enough but actually overkill -- for keeping everything short of the Wither or Ender Dragon out?) It's ridiculous!

*Yeah, yeah, I know the endermen can pick up a small subset of blocks, creepers can explode, zombies can break down wooden doors (in some cases), etc.; but we all know that most of time, your structures are totally safe

Do you ever think about how everyone keeps on thinking of assimov law of robotics as a good idea and something that we should actually program into robotics, meanwhile every asimov story about them was him thinking of interesting ways for a robot to bend or break them? Like the way people treat what was meant to be a plot device to facilitate interesting stories as a fundamental of robotics i just find funny

I haven't seen many serious takes on it (though maybe I should start checking out more sci-fi lately) but yes, that's my impression, that it was a plot device that even Asimov knew was flawed and impossible to enforce in real life, but it made for really great stories. One could see the laws of robotics as a fictional religion of sorts

The interesting thing about Asimov's robots (and other robots inspired by him) is that they are a fictional "people" much as Tolkien's Elves or Star Trek's Vulcans. Asimov's Robots are able to be sentient because of the "Positronic Brain", quite literally a plot device that allows them to be sentient. Their main feature isn't that they are robots and the mechanics of it because Asimov never really gets into that (mostly), it's mostly that they're artificial people, and the plot conflicts that arise from that.

This is why it's so obvious that the Three Laws are basically impossible to program or execute with our current knowledge of programming, it's because they aren't thought for real robots, but Asimov's Robots, with positronic brains able to understand them.

It's still really interesting to me because it reflects how the idea of AIs have changed through time. In the 50s and for most of the XXth century, the idea of artificial intelligence was basically that of artificial humans; a robot with a human-like body (or not, but an individual body) and an artificial brain. It was believed generally, or at least that what it seems to me, that the "body" part was easy, that soon, you could have robots in your home doing chores... but the brain part was the hardest one, if not impossible. An AI creating pictures or having a realistic conversation with a human was considered one of those feats that would take centuries of research if not impossible.

Look at how things turned out in real life, however. There are no real domestic robots outside factories, and nobody has yet managed to create mass-produced human-like androids. It turns out that the human form is very, very hard to replicate. And yet, I can now jump into a lot of websites and have a chat with a convincingly human-like *AI*, not only that, I can ask it to impersonate characters or people, create pictures for me, and create text that is nearly indistinguishable from human writing (as well as other feats like image, audio, text recognition, etc.) I need to stress that all that, which is now just arguments on the internet, was considered pure science fiction barely 10 years ago, an impossible feat for many. And yet, here it is. These "AI" or whatever you might want to call them or analyse them, are very different from the Asimovian (and popular) concept of AI as discrete individuals with a "body" and a "person". Where is the AI's "body"? Which one of its endless iterations is its real "self"? Okay, I'm digressing but I hope the contrast is made clear because it's interesting to me.

Soon enough, however, I think not more than ten or twenty years away, someone will finally create mass-produced human-like robots, and now that these AI tools exist, they will be equipped with them. And we will get bona-fide Asimovian Robots that can talk and interact with us, virtually the thing that science fiction has been telling us for decades will someday come. And given the world's reaction to "AIs" right now, I'm not sure I want to know how we will react to them.

I did hear that there was news of such a scene floating about. I don't mind knowing it was a possibility because I think there's enough already in the season we got to suggest that Perrin has a sense Mon is in trouble of some kind (that look on the dance floor) and that something in their relationship has shifted (maybe especially after Leida is married) to allow for a more companionable sharing of social duties (strategizing about their dinners, etc.). There's the moment with Krennic in "What a Festive Evening," when Mon and Krennic are clearly getting into a standoff, and Perrin sort of unobtrusively tries to diffuse the situation: I think it's quite possible to read that as a moment of stepping in when he has the idea that attracting the ire of someone like Krennic could be dangerous.

All in all, though, I personally prefer the story without the cut scene, for two primary reasons. One, I think it makes most sense to me that Mon wouldn't take the risk of widening the circle with someone from home again after what happened with Tay, even if she thought she had good reason to trust them. Mon is a character who feels the moral weight of collateral damage very heavily, and I imagine she might feel enough guilt about Tay's death that she would decide not to put anyone else in Luthen's crosshairs who wasn't there already. In my reading of the scene where she confronts Erskin that's part of what causes her to send him away: she does feel betrayed, but also she cares about him, and I can see her wanting to push him away as a way of trying to protect him from the fallout of what she's about to do (now that she knows he's on Luthen's radar).

Two, I think having that scene in the narrative would suggest that one of the season's notable tragedies is that Mon missed out on a deeper relationship with Perrin, and (*some* apologies to Perrin) I wouldn't like that for her as much as what we get: the version where it's a painful and high-cost decision to leave her life behind but also one that allows her to emerge into a new way of inhabiting the world. Instead of the opulent, silent dinners at home, there's the breakfast mess at Yavin. The elaborate layers of costuming and coiffure that kept up her required appearances at the capital are gone, and she's adopted habits that deliberately discard the binary gender imperatives of Chandrila. And it's important to me personally that the family she shares this new life with is Vel, who became a confidante in part because neither of them had ever felt free in their old lives, and who has a few years' more experience than Mon in making herself change, as Cinta said.

So I think it's interesting as a path-not-taken, insofar as it offers an extra-diegetic layer for a reading of Perrin that I think is already implicit in the show; but in this case I'm happier with what we got. (Pretty torn on the last Perrin shot in the montage though lol.)

☆ Caroline, like every baby, was very small but such a big responsibility. You were both exhausted, but poured all your love into each other and Caroline.

☆ Stephen is constantly in awe with her.

“She’s just so cute. I mean, all babies are cute, but our baby is the cutest ever.” He smiles, cradling her in his arms.

“You’re just the cutest ever, aren’t you?” He coos. Caroline’s tiny little hand that was wrapped around his thumb squeezed ever so slightly. That was definitely her way of agreeing.

☆ He spoils you both so much. He’s always stopping by a coffee shop after work, or a fast food place, or a shop to get you something. Always bringing you home a milkshake, a burger, or anything you need from the market. And he is always getting Caroline something — colorful binkies, cool onesies, or cute headbands.

☆ Since her name is Caroline, Stephen is always singing that one song. When she’s fussy about getting her diaper changed, he’s singing it to her to calm her. He’ll sing it to her to get her to sleep. He’ll sing it while he’s rocking her. While he’s making a bottle. You even wake up to it often.

“Sweet Caroline, buh buh buh, good times never felt so good…” Stephen sings, standing over her crib while she coos at him and kicks her feet. “Stephen, it’s too early.” You groan sleepily. “Well, she loves it. See?”

☆ You two are his special girls. His favorite people in the world. If you’re rocking Caroline to sleep and accidentally fall asleep with her, he’ll wrap a warm blanket around you two and just admire and watch while you sleep.

☆ Babies are always going to have blowouts. Crappy diaper blowouts. And the first time it happened to Stephen, it was hilarious… to you at least.

Caroline was in Stephen’s arms, cooing and babbling to both of you when it happened. All of a sudden she stopped, her eyebrows furrowed, lips scrunched, looking serious as ever. First, the fart came, then a louder one, then a long, wet bubbly sound. Then you saw the baby poop. It smeared all over the back of her onesie, then onto Stephen.

“Babe… she just… stop laughing!”

☆ No matter how whiny or pathetic he can be, he’s not one of the dads that think the wife should do everything. He wants to do everything, too! He may not be a fan of the poop diapers… but he’ll help you with everything. It’s definitely always equal.

☆ He’s definitely overprotective over the baby. Has the “first time parent” panics all the time. Anytime family comes to visit, he’s terrified they’re gonna hold her wrong or feed her the bottle the wrong way.

- He always has his camera out. Has a million pictures of his girls.

He’s got so many pictures of you doing random motherly things. Fixing a bottle, singing to Caroline, wrapping her up in her small baby jacket, etc.

So many random pictures of Caroline, too. Probably took 100 pictures during her first trip to the beach after he smothered her in baby sunscreen, and had a huge sun hat on her small head. Oh and tons of pictures of her Halloween costume that practically swallowed her whole. And the time she pooped all over her car seat and was smiling about it. And so many pictures of that amazing, gummy, baby smile.

Hi author! Random question but I remembered that in an earlier chapter pete has a moment where he thinks about what his life would be like had he been assigned to the minor family (macau specifically if i remember right). I love the pete works for the minor fam au so i was wondering what you think would happen in this scenario? Like how would the vegaspete relationship change? Would they get together sooner or would it still be kind of a shitshow?

omg anon i wrote out a really long winded answer to this and tumblr chewed it up without saving it :(

but the gist of it was, pete would be excellent as macau's bodyguard in this au and macau would be absolutely hero worshipping/ looking up to pete and imprinting on him like a baby duckling. pete would without a doubt be his favourite guard.

vegas would totally get jealous of that relationship/ feel threatened by pete outshining him with his brother so i could see him doing one of his bat shit/ off the wall tests that puts everyone in danger but would ultimately prove pete's mettle to him. then of course pete passes the test and he's too smart not to realise that he's been set up so he goes back to Vegas and really chews him out for putting Macau and everyone else in danger just for some stupid petty reason.

then vegas of course likes being told off/ yelled at by pete because pete doesnt hold back and says a lot of things about his opinion of vegas and his behaviour within the minor family etc- things that nobody else would have ever dared say to vegas before. just as pete did when vegas captured him in graveyards. only vegas response is different here because he knows he can't do anything to pete without devastating macau and he's less likely to murder his own guards vs the main family guards so he storms off/ or maybe the other guards intervene before vegas can go too far.

afterwards tho pete is horrified that he was so honest and fully expects to be fired but mr kan never hears about it and nobody kicks him out so he just vows to never drop the mask of professionalism again and promises to tread more carefully from then on. but unluckily for him by then vegas would be low key obsessed with that world shattering way pete yelled at him so he's wanting to learn more about pete and starts hanging around his brother a lot more and just trying to assess pete in whatever way he can. all while pete is trying to keep his cool and not give vegas a piece of his mind when vegas starts poking and prodding at him with the intention of getting pete to yell at him again. meanwhile macau is living his best life hanging around with his favourite bodyguard and his brother lmao with no idea that anything is going on.

i dont see them getting together under his father's roof. tbh pete would be way too careful to ever cross that line but i think if they had some chance to be alone say by some miracle Vegas convinces his father macau can go to university and even allows him to stay in the dorms, so the family rents a place nearby and pete acts as macau's on campus bodyguard with a few trusted guards.

from there vegas would start showing up a lot more under the guise of seeing his brother, but mostly with the intention of getting to know pete and building on their relationship. i could see pete being suspicious of him, thinking that vegas is so bored he has nothing better to do than to bother him or maybe he just wants to get revenge for the way pete has spoken to him/ argued with him in the past. but they somehow develop a begrudging respect/ casual friendship with one another (maybe there's a potential kidnapping attempt or attack where both pete and vegas fight together to keep macau safe and they really start to appreciate one another's skills and talents). then maybe one time macau is at a bar or party with his friends and pete is there acting as a bodyguard, vegas shows up too and says he's making him look less suspicious by keeping him company etc etc. maybe they're outside, talking and smoking, whilst pete still has eyes on macau, and is still feeling a little suspicious about what vegas wants with him until vegas leans over without any warning and kisses him on the mouth.

pete would freak out, because a) this is a public place b) he's currently meant to be working c) vegas is a GUY wtf? d) wait, is that why vegas has been hanging around them so often recently? and d) vegas is the son of his employer and no matter what this can never ever happen. except petes so flustered by how the kiss made him feel that all he manages to get out is that they can't do this in public and when he's in uniform so of course vegas takes that as encouragement whilst pete is scrambling to understand a guy just kissed him for the first time and he's surprised that he liked it so much. so then it would be macau living his best life at uni, completely oblivious to pete's inner turmoil whilst he's constantly being hit on by the heir to the minor family. vegas learns his lesson from that first try and doesn't do anything whilst pete is in uniform and they're in public- but he absolutely ups his flirting game and whenever they're alone or out of earshot he is giving pete his best material. and very actively doing his best to seduce him.

pete still holds him off, struggling to come to terms with everything he's feeling and reassessing about his sexuality but also the consequences of power dynamics in having the boss' son hit on him regularly and promises himself he won't cross the line but before he knows what's hit him, he's in way over his head and he and vegas are kissing whenever they're alone and vegas is constantly sneaking off to Pete's apartment whilst they continue things in secret. macau cottons on eventually and even helps to cover for them when mr kan gets fed up with how very distracted vegas is and tries to force him back to the compound to focus on the family business rather than playing around with his brother. but it'll be too late by that point- vegas is already in love and pete keeps telling him this is a terrible idea but every time vegas is there knocking on his door, pete lets him into his apartment, flushed and wanting more.

id guess the coup would still happen in this au, but maybe pete and vegas' relationship is more established by that point so he manages to convince vegas to stay out of it. to say no. mr kan beats the crap out of him to try and punish him for finally standing his own ground and to try and force him back into obedience but it doesnt work and he goes off to attack the main family and still dies anyway- just as pete hears about what happened and comes back to rescue vegas.

vegas takes over as the heir of the minor family and pete keeps insisting that they keep their relationship secret (even as he's helping vegas run things from the shadows and they're still sneaking into each other's beds at night). soon vegas' inner circle figures out they're together and then eventually the rest of the guards know too until it's the worst kept secret in the household. and then they decide to stop hiding, run the family business together and still get their happy ending!

in this au i think their relationship would be less of a shitshow because vegas wouldn't harm pete out of love for his brother and he'd have the time and opportunity to slowly seduce pete without needing to force anything. that would hugely change their dynamic. i think they'd still have a bit of a power dynamic going but it would be nowhere near as extreme or based in the same trauma as it does in graveyards. their relationship would be based on comradery/ grudging respect/ mutual acquaintance/ tentative friendship because they're spending so much time to get to know one another before they finally have sex. so whilst they'd still be having sex with the same kind of intensity and urgency, they wouldn't solely be using sex to communicate like they do in this fic, because in that au they'd already have their existing interactions and would already know one another quite well before delving into anything sexual- so their friendship/ professional relationship would be the baseline instead of like graveyards where the baseline was sex and the feelings/ wanting to deepen their relationship came after. so yeah thats my thoughts on that au i guess!

Finally got around to watching the new Doctor Who episode (the interstella song competition) here are my thoughts after my initial watch. I know people have very strong opinions on this episode so don't hate me these are just my thoughts, and I am up for discussions not fights.

I think Kid, Kynn, and Korra were supposed to represent different types of oppressed people.

Kid: extremists // those that fight fire with fire but don't care who gets burned

Kynn: those that think assimilating is giving in to your oppressors and that even if you know it's bad you'll do anything to oppose those in power (this is normally fine but she was more influenced by kid and took to extreme measures thinking there was no other option while also not really wanting to)

Korra: those that can/are forced to assimilate due to fear of repercussions, they may try to change people's minds peacefully or try to gain influence to dispel propaganda against the oppressed. They also might try to hide so as to not be oppressed.

I also think the Doctor was supposed to see himself in Kid and that the line "those with cold icy hearts like to hurt and kill" wasn't meant for Kid but for the Doctor as after he said that it cut to him basically torturing someone, I also think him constantly mentioning how Kid "put ice in his heart" was also supposed to show that.

Kid wasn't the villain of the episode he was the antagonist (he did bad things which moved the plot along) but the actual overarching villain was very much the corporation as they were the ones who committed a genocide and pushed propaganda against the hellians which led to what Kid did.

I understand that the messaging could've been handled better but the writers are only human and no matter how hard they try people will complain. They tried which will help spread the message and get more people to understand what's happening. The reality of the world is that the more "palatable" something is the more people will accept it (people can then make it less palatable once it's more accepted).

Also for all the people complaining about how nothing makes sense anymore (aka "why does everyone keep bigenerating?!") did you forget that in Blue yonder the Doctor unleashed magic into the world by inciting a superstition on the edge of the universe thus making all myths, fairytales, superstitions, etc real. He also said that he thought bigenerating was a myth...

Rhian would enjoy wearing makeup, at least like eyeliner or something! He'd also be in debt for always getting designer brands. I think he would like most trends unless they are really flashy or tacky. I can see Rhian wearing some jewelry-- earrings definitely. Rhian would enjoy his natural curls, but maybe dye it from time to time. And Rhian would invest in expensive cologne and always wear it on him. Rhian at work or in public would be the type constantly applying touch ups, reapplying cologne, combing his hair, etc. Thrift stores are no nos for him-- new only!!! (Waste of money but okayyy) but then he'd also buy from Temu or Ali Express 🤔 Ah and his makeup is never drugstore. It's brand name makeup by celebrities or Clinque or something far from cheap.

Rafal would mostly use baggy clothing/hoodies and sweatpants and dark colors at that. Mostly black. He'd wear the same shirts (meaning, same kind but different actual shirts. Not that he doesn't change at all because I do think (or hope) he does practice hygiene.) I can see him have a helix piercing and wear a bunch of rings, and maybe one necklace that doesn't stand out too much. Rafal looks like the type to always cut his hair so it doesn't get too long-- one, because maybe he thinks he looks unpresentable and two, because I think Rhian would attack him for not maintaining himself enough. I think Rafal would have small tattoos you can barely see or are hidden by clothing, but never sleeves of them. And I think they'd be simple, symbolic things. Also, I can picture Rafal trying to dress like an edgy bad boy and get the leather jacket thing, though he wouldn't look bad with it. He *sometimes* wears some fragrance, but it isn't as strong as Rhian's. He also goes to thrift stores and finds nice things.

James: He'd be super fancy, but also have loads of tattoos. I think he'd wear his hair long and many times try to go in a tank top or something. As long as it isn't an important meeting. James would also be big on name brands but actually not be affected too much financially by it. And he isn't so quick to jump on trends, especially if they are too tacky and humiliating for him. He may also like some jewelry in order to show off his wealth and status. Also, I think sometimes James tries too hard to fit into "old money" type aesthetics and be too snobbish. He would constantly have dress shoes, or boots. He thinks sneakers are beneath him. He would also like leather, mostly for cost and fake leather is a disgrace. He can sense a knock off of a name brand from a mile away.

Aladdin. Nothing much. I think he'd be those kids that try so so so hard to act gangster. Or, unless he's with Kyma, he's sloppy and always messing up his outfits.

Kyma: Presentable, modest (meaning not too attention grabbing or over the top), and I can see her wearing pearls! She'd carry nice handbags. She wouldn't be ashamed of hand me downs or thrifting, as long as it's something wearable and lovely. Her emphasis is more on cleanliness and keeping her hair neat. She'd use natural makeup looks more often. Sometimes she wears heels, sometimes, clean sneakers or flats. She doesn't follow trends or believe in shiny and new in the fashion world.

Midas: I feel like he has perfect hair everyone envies. It's perfect curls and a lovely color. He prefers wearing gold to silver. I don't think Midas would like trends too much-- or care. Especially if something is too attention catching or tight and suffocating. He'd have earrings that are small and not too noticeable. I think Midas would go for classy or "professional" vibe. He'd like golden or darker colors, though maybe with some shades or red, he wouldn't look bad. Midas would be the kind who would ALWAYS have killer shoes. (Canonically, he wanted to pick pocket to buy boots.) They would be like Clark's or something. Rocker bottoms. Name brand sneakers. And well, nice boots.
