YKL vol.#20~Japanese Seal 20th Special~ Kanagawa Performance Broadcast
2024.06.09 Kanagawa・Kenmin Hall The second concert of this year's Yuki Kajiura live tour was broadcast last night on TBS Channel 1. The tour is titled “Special Japanese Seal” referring to the fact that no Japanese songs are performed. This exclusion does not apply to the encore section. User 蓝原延珠_ on Bilibili kindly provided their recording of the broadcast, you can watch it HERE. I was only able to download a 720p version (~1GB) of it but for the time being, it will do. I am eager to watch it and write a little report. Hopefully an HQ version will pop up in a few days. Without further ado, let's get going〈(•ˇ‿ˇ•)-→
overture〜アンチヒーロー〜Main Theme〜: Right off the bat, I'm noticing that the audio is quite dull and maybe even slightly tinny? Might be the specific recording but it's probably more a matter of the TV broadcasts generally having bad audio. That was clearly noticeable when you compared the Kaji Fes TV broadcast to the BD release. Anyway, we are off to a great start. Glad to see rito and Lino on stage from the get-go and not just for a couple of songs here and there. It always feels a bit awkward for them to have the status of "regular" members but only appearing on stage sporadically. I haven't listened to any songs from the Antihero soundtrack so this is all new to me. Classic YK, the type of song I will always gravitate towards. Beautiful harmonies. Enjoying the slight whine in Eri's voice, so emotional. Love when the epic part starts and you can hear an entire chorus in the background (maybe a bit too much studio magic going on here but I don't mind for grand sections like that). Must have been a real goosebumps moment at the live.
the four rings: Wow, this one is so good. Don't think I've heard it before. Not too familiar with the Heaven’s Feel OST tbh. Really getting goosebumps now. Although I will say that here, the post-editing is a bit overbearing, it seems to almost drown out the vocals of our songstresses. Don't get me wrong, it still sounds amazing and I am enjoying the hell out of it but I wonder how it was like at the venue (with presumably less studio magic). With six singers on stage, they can certainly achieve some powerful choral work but of course it would still pale in comparison to a larger choir. Nonetheless, this is an instant favourite. Hope they will perform it during the Asia tour leg. Although I kinda doubt it since they said that the setlist would be very different. But who knows, it's Fate/stay night so it's probably among the more-likely pieces to be performed among Yuki's huge repertoire. My guess is that they will stick to the most popular anime stuff because they know that will get the audience excited.
absolute configuration: Perfect transition. Never getting tired of this song. And I'm glad we are back to a more natural sound with less studio magic. Solid performance as always.
E.G.O: Have they ever performed this live for a home video release? I don't think so. It was included in one of the live complication albums (Fictionjunction 2010-2013) but I don't recall ever watching a live performance. I have to admit that I haven't even listened to the live audio track, must have dismissed it when I first got the album. I can understand why because it's not really my type of song. It's not bad but not my favourite either. Very old-school YK so that's fun. And there are a couple of nice Keiko parts, that's always a treat.
キッチン革命〜Main Theme〜: A completely new track from one of Yuki's most recent works. Definitely a perfect fit for a show called "Kitchen Revolution" XD Especially the percussion at the beginning. The harmony between Yuriko, Lino and rito works really well, they sound good together. Other than that, it probably won't become one of my favourite songs. Generally not a huge fan of Yuriko as main vocalist. No one does those gorgeous operatic higher harmonies like her but when the spotlight is on her, it's typically not my cup of tea.
voyagers: As far as I know, we only have the studio version and live audio from the compilation album as reference. No official live footage. The song has never really stuck out to me, it is okay but it's a bit too derivative of much better tracks from Yuki. Will keep it short so I don't trigger anyone. But it's definitely one of those songs where I prefer the version with Wakana. Joelle's vocals don't do anything for me here. But since I am not super invested in the song anyway, I can't say I care much.
Historia: opening theme: Beautiful rendition. Love that they brought all six vocalists back on stage for this. Naturally, I'm quite fond of Wakana's version once again (not least of all because this song will always have a connection to Kalafina) but Yuriko does a fanstatic job of singing her parts, admittedly, she has much better control so her voice sounds very crisp and lovely. Joelle provides great support here and their voices blend well together.
forest: Never been a fan. I didn’t like it when Wakana sang it and I don’t like it now that Joelle sings it. It’s not a bad song at all and Joelle sounds fine to me but it’s just not my cup of tea. Next.
My long forgotten cloistered sleep: Now THIS on the other hand I have always loved. I still remember everyone hating Wakana's live version during YKL Vol.#9 but I enjoy it quite a lot. It's true that it's probably not the best she has ever sounded but her vocals here certainly don't warrant all the nasty comments she has received throughout the years for that performance. Of course, I am also obsessed with that WaKei combo!! And you know me, I have a weakness for "lalala"s so this has definitely always been among my favourite YKL songs. As for this performance, I think both Wakana and Joelle are trying are little too hard to emulate Emily Bindiger's timbre. I personally don't think Emily Bindiger has a particularly nice voice so if anyone tries to sound like her, it's always a slight downgrade in my opinion. I'll just say this, if you are one of the people who say that Wakana sounds like a chipmunk in her version, you'll have to say the same thing about Joelle(¬_¬) Long story short, I don't mind this version with Joelle and Keiko. Still very enjoyable. Will definitely be listening to it on repeat.
I swear: Probably one of my least favourite Keiko songs but this is a decent performance. I might even like this more than some of the previous live rendition since it's a bit more delicate(?) I think.
fiction: Another song I could live without…The chorus is solid but it's not one of those songs I'd ever actively listen to.
I reach for the sun: Forever sad that they made Joelle the lead of this song. Keiko does a better job in my opinion and I like the song quite a bit more than "I swear". Overall, the English section has probably been the weakest so far, at least for me. I actually ended up fast-forwarding through most of it.
MC: This MC is quite interesting since Yuki asks her singers to share a story of something they are taking a break from right now. To explain the background of this question, it's a reference to the title of this year's tour: Nihongo Fuin = Japanese Seal ("fuin" basically means to seal up something. You are excluding it/taking a break from it/quitting it/etc). Lino says that despite being a huge lover of the sea, she has been taking a break from going to the beach and swimming in the sea during this summer because it might affect her voice negatively. Yuki has a funny response to that because she says that most of her songs have never really had a summer vibe and actually don't work very well in a summer atmosphere but for some reason, they have ended up always holding their annual tour during the summer time. Keiko has stopped drinking her beloved lattes for the past three months to prioritise her water intake. Gladly, she has overcome the worst parts of quitting already and is getting used to water. Yuki admired her stoic nature. Yuriko would typically refrain from certain things in preparation for a live tour but this year she has completely forgotten about that. About two weeks ago, she decided to quit ice-cream but she only did it half-hardheartedly because it was so hot that she ended up eating it anyway. So yeah, this is a big fail and it's really a "story of NOT taking a break from something" XD Joelle has stopped waking up early. Usually, she is the type to rise together with the sun but in order to increase her sleeping hours, she will wake up later when she is on tour. A restful sleep will help her body heal up and improve her voice. rito has quit chewing gum (and stopped eating certain chewy foods such as squid) because it's bad for your jaw and facial muscles. Kaori has taken a break from watching the drama "Anithero" (for which YK is composing music, the main theme having been performed as the intro of this live). Seems like the song is haunting her a bit too much and the story is getting to her. So once the tour is over and she is no longer singing the song, she will have an easier time watching the episodes. Yuki agrees that the main theme is quite haunting. Especially when she hears one of the singers rehearsing in the dressing-room right before a performance. Eri doesn't really have anything to tell the audience but she and Yuki briefly talk about the difficulties of learning so many songs with coined words.
Gaia: Wow, what a lovely song. Instant like. Really adore Eri here!! Such gorgeous high notes.
Credens justitiam: What a great team-up with Keiko, Eri, Yuriko and Joelle. Eri sounds great together here with Keiko. Does Yuriko sound a bit off here? I don't know. Not 100% into some of her parts.
hepatica: First time actively listening to this song. Very beautiful and tender. I feel like some of Yuki's KnK work might have been inspired by this song. Some parts immediately made me think of "Seventh Heaven".
godsibb: Waaah! Yes!! Always a joy to listen to this song. Glad everyone is on stage for a powerful finale.
Alone: I knew I would love this Pandora Hearts medley. I always do and this one is no exception. Flawless start.
Bloody rabbit: Some squeaky parts at the beginning but overall, solid.
Contractor: OBSESSED. One word. Perfection. There's a reason this is the performance I'm using for this post. I'm forever a slave to Keiko's solo part XD. Also, Eri is such a queen here! So cool!
zodiacal sign: This is the song where you can really tell that they are taking great care of Kaori's condition. No strenuous movements at all. How funny is it to see Rie joining the girls in their little dance?! Cute!! Super fun performance as always.
open your heart: Ughh, I do not like this song at all. They did "Sweet Song"/"paradise regained" for most of the other performances. Would have killed to get either of those two instead of "open your heart". Obviously, "Sweet Song" would have been perfect. From what I heard, the final concert with Kaori in July had an amazing and heart-warming performance of "Sweet Song".
En.Prologue〜このとほかやわらかい: Wish I could grow to love this song. It deserves my love, I know it. But I just can't get into it. But hey, it's a cool performance, I can't deny that. During her solos, Kaori sounds a bit nasal in my opinion. Nothing that takes away from the performance but it's certainly noticeable (throughout the live to be honest - at least during the few songs where she has a substantial solo part. I think you can also hear it during the main MC. Either she had a minor cold that day or it's just a symptom of her pregnancy. Lowered nasal resonance is actually a very common thing for pregnant women.)
En.Parade: Beautiful. No notes.
En.蒼穹のファンファーレ: Solid. Not a huge fan of the song though.

The 69th Annual Grand National Roadster Show
You know how January is typically “the start of the indoor show season”? (Really, it’s the start of most things that correspond to our calendar system …) But this is California, and unlike most other states, there really isn’t a winter or indoor car show season, per se—we just have car shows year ’round, and some just happen to be held indoors … mostly. It is what it is, and January is the beginning of the 2018 car show season, which kicks off at the Fairplex in Pomona with the 69th Annual Grand National Roadster Show. And … it’s usually when the area gets its initial dose of inclement weather, a factor better suited for events held indoors.
I’ve been going to this gala gig (which some refer to simply as The Roadster Show, often confusing it with the L.A. Roadsters event, but we’ll go with GNRS for short) for many years—from its final exhibit at the Oakland Coliseum, its brief stints in San Francisco and San Mateo, to its inaugural SoCal showing here in Pomona where it’s much easier to get to for folks like me (sorry NorCal). But despite the venue/geographical and promoter changes, some things will never change—the aura surrounding the GNRS that not only draws people from far and wide, but does so in a very spiritually communal way. An annual reunion of rodders, if you will, it’s the one show where four days barely gives you enough time to see everything—and everyone.
The “feature” aspect of the GNRS that has remained the same since it was first bestowed upon a Southern Californian by the name of Bill Neikamp in 1950 is the cherished America’s Most Beautiful Roadster award accompanied by the now-famous 9-foot trophy that show founder Al Slonaker originally had created as potential bait to lure in roadster owners from down south. Don’t imagine Slonaker ever imagined his scheme would do the exact opposite, but he oughtta be real pleased to see how the show’s grown to become the “longest running indoor car show in the world.” This year’s AMBR honors went to the Martin Special, the 1931 Ford roadster undertaken by Hot Rods & Hobbies for its namesake owner, Dave Martin. A definite crowd favorite, the anticipated restoration debut of the Eddie Dye 1929 Ford roadster by Circle City Hot Rods and owned by Tom Bobowksi was given the Bruce Meyer Hot Rod Preservation Trophy.
I will admit there was one slight difference at this year’s event—the inclement weather that’s usually factored in, well, it apparently decided to take the week off and spend some time back east. Pomona Valley and its surrounding areas below the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains were clear, dry, and unseasonably warm—albeit a bit windy come Sunday when the 69th (or is it the 70th?!) edition of the Grand National Roadster Show came to a successful end with the traditional closing of the awards ceremony.
Top 100 Winners
1932 Ford coupe | Bret Sukert | Montesano, WA Bret’s ’60s-style 1932 three-window hot rod is built from an unmodified original steel body bought from well-known rodder Dick Page. Fosses Hot Rods handled body and paint chores; Mitch Kim did all that ’striping. The suspension includes a dropped axle and transverse leaves in front and quarter ellipticals in back. The Chevy small-block is topped with a Weiand manifold and 1965-1966 GTO air cleaner. Interior elements include Mopar van seats, an N.O.S. Grant wheel, and restored Ha-Dees Stewart-Warner blue face gauges. The coupe won the Suede Palace Best of Show award.
1940 Ford convertible | Tony Miller | San Pedro, CA Tony cut the top off a standard coupe and added a postwar-style top with quarter windows. At Don Dillard’s Highway 99 Hot Rods the hood and quarters were sectioned, front wheels moved forward, body channeled, doors stretched, trunk shortened, and many other mods were made, including a handmade 1940 Merc grille, 1939 trim, 1941 Stude taillights, and 1940 Merc rear bumper. A Plymouth speedo and 1940 Ford instruments fill the dash facing Sid Chavers’ red leather interior. A 4V 289 Ford is tied to an AOD trans. The only unmodified parts are the front bumper, running boards, and headlight rings.
1957 Ford Del Rio Ranch Wagon | Robert Florine | Ventura, CA Robert wanted a Ford because there is already an abundance of Chevys, and worked with Steve Strope and crew at Pure Vision to build his wagon. The profile was altered with a slanted B-pillar and 4-3/4-inch door stretch (with 1957 T-bird handles) to improve proportions. An Art Morrison Enterprises chassis with C6 front suspension parts and Mike Meyer Racing rear torque arms and JRI coilovers beef up the undercarriage. The engine is a Kaase Boss 9 with Borla eight-stack induction. The custom interior is matched in great taste by the Bridgewater Bronze and Avorio two-tone paint.
1929 Ford roadster | James Bobowski | Orange, CA James’ Model A exemplifies the historical influence that was strong among AMBR contenders. The Eddie Dye roadster has been lost, found, parted out, and rotated through many owners and styles since the Ayala Brothers built it for Eddie almost 70 years ago. Jimmy White and his Circle City Hot Rods team restored it using many original parts, like the Whitey Clayton nose and hood—and reproducing others, like the belly pan and Crestliner wheel. The Evans Engineering Flathead, Cherry Orchid paint, Ford and Merc hubcaps, and Chris Plant’s recreated white pleated upholstery bring 1952 into 2018.
1941 Buick | Clifford Mattis | Vacaville, CA Clifford and builder Marcos Garcia from Lucky 7 Customs teamed up on this custom. A chopped top, handmade flush skirts, and taillights are just a few of the custom mods. The chassis combines a Mustang II frontend and a four-link rear, with airbags to drop the car. Power comes from a carbed Chevy 350. One-off EVOD wheels (with simulated Caddy caps) roll with Coker Firestones. The vintage-style interior features a Dennis Crook wheel, New Vintage USA gauges, and patterned cloth inserts in the leather upholstery. It took 20 spray-outs to get the right dark olive paint color, but the final result is stunning.
1960 Buick LeSabre | John Burke | Albuquerque, NM John’s radical custom Buick was previously owned by Aaron Lobato of U.S. Kustoms. John worked with Aaron and Jimmy Gutierrez to turn the car into a piece of art. Modifications include the 1-3/4-inch chop, custom grille made from 1950 Merc hood ornaments, 1960 Imperial bumpers, custom taillights built with 1960 Buick and 1962 Merc components, and reshaped fins. RideTech suspension drops the Buick to the pavement. The full custom interior features two-tone Camaro buckets, a console created from two 1965 T-birds, and a 1960 Imperial steering wheel. The paint is PPG Emberglow.
1934 Ford coupe | Dennis Mariani Jr. | Oakland, CA Dennis Mariani Jr. wanted a high-end, classy, street-driven coupe to reflect the look of the land speed cars he and his family have raced on the salt flats. The track nose, belly pans, British Racing Green paint, and other elements on his 1934 Ford three-window coupe accomplish that. Moal Coachbuilders built the car using their torsion bar suspension. A Hilborn EFI setup feeds the aluminum Chevy small-block, connected to a Legend five-speed with a V-8 quick-change rear. Moal built custom centers for the steel wheels. A 1934 steering wheel was customized and the bucket seats were upholstered in deep red leather.
1957 Chevy 150 Sedan | Tony & Paula Jurado | Hayward, CA The Jurados bought their Chevy from Bill Ganahl at South City Rod & Custom. Ganahl’s plan was to build the rare 150 Business Sedan into a street race car, what he calls the “anti-Gasser.” Tony and Paula agreed to continue the plan. A matching-numbers dual-quad 283 and Muncie four-speed propel the Chevy, with other numbers-correct parts also used. The suspension components were rebuilt or replaced to keep it stock underneath. With Americans in front and chrome reverse wheels with slicks in back, vinyl tuck ’n’ roll inside, Sun tach, no air, and no tunes, the 1957 is a real throwback to the early ’60s.
1950 Studebaker | Gary Warner | Burley, ID When Gary, of Gary’s Hot Rods & Harleys, started his Studebaker people must have thought he was nuts. The 1950 coupe body was in a wrecking yard and a 1949 Champion sat behind a barn. Gary grafted the 1950 nose onto the 1949 body. The 354 Chrysler Hemi came out of a chicken coop. Now it runs Hilborn electronic injection and a BDS blower. The custom chassis with Jim Meyer Racing front suspension and RideTech components rolls on Boyds wheels and Mickey Thompson tires. Exterior mods include the 4-inch chop and reshaped suicide doors. Brown leather alligator-covered seats add elegance.
1938 Ford convertible sedan | Don & Irene Richardson | Hoquiam, WA Don built the 1938 in segments, working nights and weekends at his shop, Richardson’s Custom Auto Body. PPG Copper Sunset paint covers the body, chopped 1-1/2 inches, and modified with a 1937 Ford nose, reshaped wheelwells, and custom side moldings. The stock frame has been boxed. Suspension goodies include a Heidts frontend, Jag rear, and ShockWaves. The engine is a Chevy Ram Jet 350 backed by a 700-R4. Take a close look at the Firestone hubcaps on the Wheel Vintiques wheels. The contemporary interior features custom leather upholstery and a 1950 Buick wheel from Dennis Crooks.

This 351-Powered 1955 Ford F-100 is Rebuilt and Righteous
YEAR: 1955 MAKE: Ford MODEL: F-100 Pickup OWNER: John Rydzewski STATE: Oregon
How many enthusiasts drive Fords because their fathers drove Blue Oval iron? John Rydzewski from Oregon City, Oregon, is the owner and builder of this candy blue 1955 Ford F-100. He grew up around his dad’s Fords and developed a love for them, especially fat-fendered trucks.
When John purchased his F-100 24 years ago it was stock. After his first rebuild, it had purple paint with ghost flames, 15-inch Alcoa truck wheels, a gray interior, and a Ford 351W engine where the factory Y-block had been. He and his wife, Tracielyn, started participating in shows and the truck started getting attention.
Six years ago, John was inspired to rebuild the F-100 after stuff in his garage had fallen on it. Second-build body modifications include shaved sheetmetal, molded running boards, a frenched antenna, and a rear roll pan. Widened rear fenders house 20×13 Schott wheels, with 18s in front, all wrapped in Mickey Thompson rubber. The House of Kolor paint was sprayed at Ben’s Custom Paint.
The F-100 will be back on the street when its showbiz career winds down, so John added a Mustang II independent front suspension and a rear four-link with a Watts link and ShockWaves all around.
CSC Custom Upholstery covered the aftermarket bucket seats and door panels in two-tone leather. The center console holds the B&M shifter, JVC head unit, and Vintage Air vents. The billet cup holders lift to reveal the Alpine amps (speakers are MB Quart and JBL). A billet dash plate holds Dakota Digital gauges.
The reliable Ford 351, C6 transmission, and 9-inch rearend from the first rebuild were retained for the second project. John chose the 351 to keep his F-100 all Ford. The engine was machined and rebuilt by Portland Engine Rebuilders and topped with an Edelbrock intake, Holley carburetor, and a classic bugcatcher air cleaner. Ford Performance offers variations on the 351 at performanceparts.ford.com.
Dameon Allen of Pacific Styles Car Club contributed to the build and Tacielyn contributed moral support. John’s homebuilt F-100 was at the GNRS to collect points needed to qualify for the ISCA Championship Finals. He accomplished that goal as well as the unexpected goal of winning the Ford Performance/STREET RODDER Best Ford In A Ford award.

Hyperallergic: Surveying 20 Years of French Counterculture, Sans Punk Rebellion
Philippe Morillon, “Members of the Gazolines group in front of the shop Pendora de Luxe in the Halles” (1975) (image © Philippe Morillon)
PARIS — Before filter bubbles, there were countercultures: self-selecting groups that did not give a shit about what other people liked or wanted. Recently a plethora of reflective countercultural revivals have been blooming in Paris, evidenced by the proclivity of archival-based shows centering around the 1970s and 1980s. Undoubtedly these long looks back provide a supportive locus to keep one foot in as we step into areas of unknown protestation in our troubled times. It’s almost as if there has been some cultural algorithm working away behind the cerebral scene, enabling museum content providers to know exactly what angry people with free time prefer to see in wake of the escalation of worldwide right-wing wingnuts.
The latest misty-eyed effort is Guillaume Désanges and François Piron’s display of 700 pieces of punk and post-punk art and ephemera, L’Esprit français, Countercultures, 1969–1989, which is jarring the house at Antoine de Galbert’s La Maison Rouge. In its radical commitments and rebellious spirit, the show easily dovetails with Soulèvements, which was at the Jeu de Paume last fall, in its fringe consortium, with Beat Generation at the Centre Pompidou, in its dependence on period-piece presentation, L’Esprit français with The Velvet Underground: New York Extravaganza, which was at the Philharmonie de Paris last summer, and to the archival Europunk (1976–1980), which took place at Cité de la Musique a few years ago.

Bérurier noir, “Macadam Massacre” (1984), vinyl record cover)
Alas, L’Esprit français is not only the latest to appear in this march of insurgence, but also the least. To be frank, it struck me as listless. I felt as listless there as I do when listening to a ’70–’80s new wave–themed mixtape. I know I am supposed to feel something savagely biting, but age has given a lame tragicomic ring to it all. In our age of imprudent Trumpism, this astute nasty display felt like dainty relics mislaid: pearls cast before swine.
Obligatorily, sex, violence, and death are the main “inspirational” themes in this show, hurled in revolt against conservative culture and hippie pot, peace, love, and understanding. As such, L’Esprit français consumed me with feelings of uneasy nostalgia mixed with ennui for a perplexing “no future” time when nihilism mixed easily with hedonism.

Of course, the threats in France posed by Marine Le Pen and all reactionary politics are serious, so any additional engaged material in the skirmishing culture wars is welcome. But although there were a handful of notable exceptions, what bored me about this show of far-flung disconsolate ephemera was the lack of impact that powerful art delivers. There is very little here that was ambitiously dense, intellectually rigorous, or in any way monumental. Rather, there are a lot of gestures toward outrage, mockery, self-mockery, self-loathing, and cultural image–hijacking that, despite the gleeful, stupid exuberance, provide few moments of critical transcendent emancipation.

The Narrative Figuration paintings, hardcore graphics (like Bazooka), the studies for Les Editions Champ Libre or Hara-Kiri (the precursor to Charlie Hebdo), punk band Bérurier Noir’s documentary material and knowing nodes at Fabrice Emaer’s club Le Palace — it all reeks of mock-subversive doom-and-gloom. Everything is drab and rather exhausting as these florid documents struggle hard to communicate what turgid “punk aggression” was about. There are newspapers, flyers, posters, and extracts from films, videos, and television, along with rarely seen notebooks from the Dziga Vertov Group formed by Jean-Luc Godard and Jean-Pierre Gorin, as well as Henri and Marinette Cueco’s School Book. The yellow paper and the crumbly quality of much on view added to my sense of wandering among relics of a lost civilization.
After passing through a hallway containing an illustrated timeline, the first persuasive work encountered is Alain Montesse’s punky noise film Les Situs heureux (Happy Situs, 1970–78), a 10-minute extract taken from the larger full 52-minute film of anti-situationist decomposition. It is quite good. Almost all the scratchy beauté sombre images depict devaluation of place and image. Dark, decadent semblances are superimposed, removed from their original situational context and meaning. It should come as no surprise then that Roland Barthes is quoted in the film, but concealed. Turned upside-down.

Coopérative des Malassis, “Detail of Who kills? the affair Gabrielle Russier, “The true story of a young woman, of her love story, of her death” under-titled” (1970) (image © Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dole / Photo Claude-Henri Bernardot)
Another highlight is Coopérative des Malassis’s new-wave painting “Detail of Who Kills? The Gabrielle Russier Affair: The True Story of a Young Woman, of Her Love Story, of Her Death” (1970), part of a large body of political and figurative paintings produced by six painters working collectively — Henri Cueco, Lucien Fleury, Jean-Claude Latil, Michel Parré, Gérard Tisserand, and Christian Zeimert — between 1968 and 1981. And another work of panache is the painting by master of Surrealist irony Alfred Courmes, “The Intervention of the Army is Requested” (1969). In his heyday, Courmes’s provocative painted fantasies earned him the nickname “The Angel of Bad Taste.” Along those same bad/good lines, there is a tremendous balls-out Pierre Klossowski drawing called “L’hermaphrodite souverain” (1972) hung near Pierre Molinier’s autoerotic masterpiece “Self-portrait” (1968). Another marvel was the bountifully decadent drawing by Elles Sont De Sortie (Bruno Richard and Pascal Doury) of a huge sloppy orgy, “Aventure Vacances Loisirs” (1978). Richard and Doury created together the graphic journal Elles Sont De Sortie in 1977, the year punk really exploded in Paris.

Jacques Monory “Antoine n° 6” (1973) (image © Jacques Monory / ADAGP, Paris 2017)
Only a bit less interesting were Jacques Monory’s painting “Antoine n° 6” (1973), Annette Messager’s photo installation “Les Hommes-femmes et les Femmes-hommes” (1972), and Philippe Morillon’s stark photo “Edwidge à la corde” (1977), which shows a chic and sultry Parisian punk woman who lived in my building on Ludlow Street during the height of the Downtown scene in New York: chanteuse Edwige Belmore. Belmore, a rather charismatic butch-femme, had moved to Manhattan and begun living on the edge of self-destruction during what is widely celebrated as one of New York’s most radically creative periods — before AIDS, drugs, and gentrification shattered and scattered the scene. This punk-elegant photograph was painfully beautiful for me to see, reminding me once again that New York’s Downtown scene was very connected to European immigrants during a specific sociopolitical time of apocalyptic expectations, a factor that helped shape quite a few prodigious punks in both America and France. With the fall of the Berlin Wall, that sordid bubble burst and much of the countercultural spirit drained away.
Philippe Morillon “Edwidge à la corde” (1977)
So even as L’Esprit français struck me as a moderately melancholy march down memory lane, the listlessness produced a reminder that countercultural moments serve best as guides for how to squat and hold on to an unknown future: by keeping one black eye on contrarian precedents and the other on precarious present moments.
