It’s rare to feel happy in northern Gaza. But the other day, my sister Soso made me smile.

It’s not a lie that sugar is expensive. 1kg is $80. Frying oil is $70. That donut was expensive to make, even without the sugar. But it’s okay. Even if it means the adults can’t eat, it’s okay. Soso was happy for a few hours. She’s only 4 years old yet her life is already so hard. She’s not growing properly due to malnutrition and trauma. Her mental health is in shambles, not at all how a child should be. Since birth, two wars have come very close to killing her, so we just want her to be happy.

Please help me make her happy every day. A few days ago, she was the happiest child in the world because she ate an apple for the first time in a year. That won’t happen again because fruits are too expensive, but I swear, she explodes with joy when we buy vegetables too. She is a child with simple dreams.

Today I want to thank you a lot and tell you what your generosity did for us in northern Gaza ❤️

I swear this is my second try at Tumblr, it failed the first time and I came back as a last resort with my friend’s drawings because nothing else was working anymore. I never expected to be met with such kindness. I am overwhelmed with gratitude.

The past few days have been very hard. I wanted to just be happy about the donations, but people with many followers on Twitter accused me of being a fraud. It didn’t matter that I showed proof, that people vouched for me, that I told them other Palestinians have vetted my campaign here. I even had to reveal personal information that I wanted to keep private. I told them to video call me if they wanted to see that I’m in Gaza and none of them did it, but they kept slandering me anyway and their subscribers followed blindly. Both me and my friend are experiencing physical pain due to the extreme stress because many people were reporting my account and my campaign. My account is now temporarily restricted, but thank God nothing else happened.

I wish I could abandon Twitter and only stay here, but unfortunately some donations also come from over there. I swear I am exhausted by what happened, but when it became too hard, I thought “If everything goes wrong, there is still Tumblr”. Everyone here is so kind it’s making me cry. It's insane how the same set of news has been coming out of Gaza every single day for the past 14 months and I know for a fact people have grown numb to it; numb to reading the numbers or headlines like "Israeli strike targets school" because Israel made it so. Israel has bombed the first hospital in this aggression and pretended it wasn't them. Saw how quickly the outrage died down so now they have practically destroyed the entire healthcare system in Gaza.

A genocide is being carried out against the besieged population of Gaza and you are bearing witness to it. Your one mission is NOT to grow accustomed to the mention of these crimes. the phenomenon of people talking about the cost of "AI" in energy and water while ignoring everything else they use that also spends those same things is very telling

you do not know the process behind production of the things you take for granted. you think your computer is a magic box that connects to the astral plane. you never think about the cables and servers and water cooling and electricity cost and the workers who build and maintain the infrastructure etc. etc. except for the thing you don't like and were told the cost was a good excuse for why you don't like it

you also don't think about the cost of so much more. the food you eat, the phone in your hand, etc. you just know it costs an amount of dollars at the store

this isn't about being a morally bad person for not thinking about this. this is about not getting bogged down on the supposed inherent evil of 1 specific thing you were told to hate because it's the only thing that you realize needs to be produced using material resources. and instead becoming a marxist

The way the government treats homeless people and panhandlers ought to be evidence enough on its own that empathy doesn't always lead to ethical behavior. Middle and upper class people get uncomfortable seeing homeless people because seeing someone in a bad state triggers an uncomfortable empathic response. They feel bad seeing people suffering. But people respond by trying to remove the source of their discomfort just as often as they respond with compassion.

That's why cities respond with hostile architecture and brutality. They just need to make the problem invisible, and people stop complaining.

Empathy is very useful, but it's no substitute for actual ethical principles.
