mark lee: You busy?

The next time you see Mark, it’s two days later on a Friday evening. 

“Hey, sorry for texting you so late.” His voice is warm, contrary to the cool autumn breeze. It’s nearing ten p.m. but annoyance is the last thing on your mind. “What were you up to?”

You stick your hands into your sweater pockets. “Nothing much. Doing some readings. You?” 

Mark brushes his bangs back. “A dinner party with the BCSA execs. I managed to leave before they headed out for round two at someone’s house.” 

“You didn’t feel like going?”

“Nah.” He shakes his head. “I’d rather be hanging out with you.”

Okay. You don’t ask about Renjun. 

Neither you nor Mark say anything for the first few minutes of the walk, simply following the main path on campus. It’s serene, with a few students here and there, and several raccoons hiding out near the garbage bins. The streetlights dimly illuminate the route but it’s enough to wade through the darkness. You can hear Mark humming the tune to a song you don’t know. 

“This reminds me of middle school,” says Mark. “I remember walking you home one night, after a bunch of us decided to go to the beach.” 

You remember as well. “Yeah, and then you ended up sleeping over because it was one in the morning.” A soft snort leaves your nose. “My dad was shocked to see you on the couch the next day.” 

Mark chuckles at the fond memory. “Are your parents well? I know our mothers contact each other from time to time, but I haven’t seen them in ages.” 

You lightly massage your nape. “They’re doing good, I guess. My mom’s still working as an anchor for CBC, but my dad switched companies recently. He’s working at some well-established realty firm now.” The two of you turn left. “How about yours?”

“Mm, they’re good too.” Mark grins. “They’re still working at the same law firm. I think they’re dead set on staying until their retirements.” 

“That’s cool,” is all you can think of. 

“Yeah. Hey, want some ice cream? My treat.”

You spot CCOMAZ, the reputable ice cream brand everyone is always raving about. The last time you had it was in first year and frankly, you don’t remember how it tasted. “Sure, but I can pay for my own.” 

Mark holds the door open for you. “It’s okay. My treat since you agreed to hangout with me at ten p.m.” 

Your lips quirk into a small smile. 

You end up getting the lavender honey flavour, while Mark goes for the caramel one. It’s a little pricey, considering it’s a small, family-owned brand, but it tastes good nonetheless. 

“Oh, I gotta go.” says Mark, reading a text from his phone. “Renjun forgot his keys and Chenle is at a retreat, so I need to let him in.” 

The omega is mentioned briefly but something in you churns. A thorn pricks the corner of your heart; feels like guilt, although you’re not sure why. It’s not like you have a crush on Mark or anything, so Renjun shouldn’t feel threatened. 

Whoa. You stop yourself for a second. What’s with the escalation?

“Y/N? You good?” 

You glance at Mark, whose face is painted with worry. You breathe out a response. “Yeah, yeah. Sorry, got a brain freeze. I’ll, uh, see you in CLST, I guess?” 

Mark frowns. “No, let me walk you home first.”

“But Renjun?” 

“Renjun can wait in the lobby,” he shrugs. 

You’re a little concerned at Mark’s comment but choose to not dwell on it. Instead, you jokingly push him towards the bus stops. “Just go, Mark. I live on campus, so I’ll be fine. You shouldn’t keep him waiting.” 

The frown never leaves Mark’s face, but he relents and nods. “I’ll see you on Monday, then. Get home safe. Text me when you’re home.” 

“Okay mom,” you tease. “Thanks for the ice cream!”

Mark beams from afar. The imagery blends in with the numerous memories you have of teenager Mark, dressed in his school uniform, bidding you goodbye after dropping you off at home. For the first time in years, you wonder what it would’ve been like if the two of you never grew apart.

For his age, Simba is a very silly lion that lollygags around the habitat making funny noises. We don’t know exactly what happened to him in his past, but he has strange scars around his feet that resemble rope. He loves his habitat and the keepers, however, if he is lying on his bench there is nothing that can be done to bribe him off of it.

Rescue Story: Netflix’s Tiger King went viral in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, shining a spotlight on the key players and animal abusers within the Big Cat Trade. As a Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) fully accredited sanctuary and founding member of the Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance (BCSA), Turpentine Creek was one of the go-to sanctuaries called upon by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to assist in the seizure of 68 big cats from the Tiger King Park in Oklahoma in May of 2021. This secretive operation was coordinated by our President, the BSCA, and the DOJ in a two-part execution that included SWAT teams and armored vehicles.

First to be seized were four females suspected of being pregnant and a neurologically impaired male li-liger. One of the four females gave birth to three cubs just two weeks after her arrival at the Refuge. It was touch-and-go for the cubs’ first two months, while they endured intensive physical therapy from our team to correct contracted tendons in their hind legs that made walking impossible. As time ran out to safely handle them, the cubs’ condition miraculously began to improve. For over a year, Turpentine Creek continued to provide critical care for the 13 witness protection cats without the ability to fundraise for their needs. Finally, in September 2022, the case was concluded and the 13 big cats will now permanently call Turpentine Creek their home.

Last week, Senator Jon Tester reintroduced the Blackfoot Clearwater Stewardship Act (BCSA), a public lands protection bill made by Montanans, for Montanans. The BCSA will add nearly 80,000 acres to the Bob Marshall, Scapegoat, and Mission Mountains Wilderness Areas and safeguard the four most crucial tributaries of the storied Blackfoot River.

The pristine Blackfoot Watershed has incredible habitat with healthy populations of bears, moose, deer, elk, and wolverines. The rivers and streams contain cold, clear water that supports Montana native fishes such as westslope cutthroat trout, bull trout, and sculpin. No matter what you love about the outdoors, you can find something special about this landscape. That is why, for more than a decade, Montanans of all interests and backgrounds have worked to find a lasting solution to protect this landscape. That solution is the BCSA.

The BCSA will help grow Montana’s $7.1 billion outdoor recreation economy, protect tens of thousands of acres of wilderness, provide for appropriate forest management, and establish two outdoor recreation areas north of Ovando. The recreation areas establish new winter motorized access and preserve mountain biking opportunities. Senator Tester understands the need to protect Montana’s outdoor heritage, and he understands that BCSA is a true grassroots solution to increasing pressures from development, extraction, and population growth in the state.

The BCSA has the support of 83 percent of Montanans, according to the 2022 University of Montana Voter Survey on Public Land and is the culmination of a years-long collaborative effort involving people up and down the Blackfoot and Clearwater valleys who represent a broad spectrum of interests – conservation, timber, ranching, outfitting, local business and recreation.

By expanding key areas of wilderness, BCSA provides permanent protection for the headwaters of one of western Montana’s most popular and beloved rivers. The incorporation of the special recreation areas ensures that these areas can be enjoyed, as they are, for generations to come.

Senator Tester’s perseverance on this legislation shows his dedication to Montanans. BCSA was developed by Montanans, for Montanans, and we’re so excited to work with Senator Tester and the rest of the Montana delegation to get this bill over the finish line.

(2023). Happy Birthday, Mauri! Mauri is a very sociable rescued lioness. Unfortunately, Mauri has some major issues due to a very poorly performed declaw surgery, causing her to limp. She is on our pain management program and is closely watched by our staff. Declawing is a horrible thing to do to big cats and creates a lifetime of complications. Despite this, she is still very playful and loves playing with toys. She is very vocal and will talk with the team often, in addition to chiming in with the other lions during their daily caroling.

Rescue Story: As a member of the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) and a founding member of the Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance (BCSA), Turpentine Creek is often called in by Government Organizations to handle high-profile cases. In September of 2020, Turpentine Creek rescued four tigers and four lions from Tim Stark’s Wildlife In Need, a cub-petting scheme operating as a pseudo-sanctuary.

A federal judge ordered the animals to be removed from the Indiana facility due to Stark’s inhumane declawing practices and his practice of prematurely removing cubs from their mothers. The haphazard rescue involved missing and abandoned animals, as well as an angry and on-the-run Tim Stark.

We required assistance from the U.S. Marshals, who had to sweep the property before we were even allowed to enter and stood guard throughout the rescue. All the cats were immediately treated for health issues; they were arthritic from being declawed, invested with intestinal parasites, and had other individual health concerns.
