ngl I love studying psych and I'm very good at it but some of this stuff makes me want to tear my hair out
the other night I spent hours researching Sabina spielrein, at some point I'll be doing a write up about her bc it's insane. she was a female psychoanalyst and professor, worked closely with Jung and Freud and made significant contributions to their work, in fact a lot of their theory was based off hers. she also treated Jean Piaget! but she's been completely erased from history. she lived broke despite how important she was, and was executed by nazis. and her name is not even mentioned anywhere at uni, despite us literally learning her theories under a different name.
then I read some of the work of Yalom who my last teacher really liked, we read some excerpts from his book and I disagreed with them but they were fine. anyway i found a chapter of him talking about feeling compassion for a patient of his who gleefully talked about how he would regularly rape women if he thought he could get away with it, and sure, Yalom didn't agree with his views, but he didn't make that point in his book. he said he felt connected to this patient, and sought the parts of him who knew better.
then next chapter he's describing at length how disgusting his fat female patient is, how he hates looking at her bc her fat hides the parts of a woman he likes to look at (he seriously said this), and people online defend him saying ohh noo but he realised his bias in the end, it's okay!!
bitch.. if that's true, keep it to your damn self. she doesn't have to read that about herself in a published book. also, he only found compassion for her when she started to lose the weight. no, it's not refreshing to see a therapist admit their bias, that's the bare minimum, Jesus Christ. and he didn't elaborate on the blatant misogyny, of course.
lately when I can't sleep ive been pretending I work in academia and writing a syllabus that actually deconstructs this stuff lol. Ive got readings and everything. the way we are taught is honestly terrible.
not to mention the weirdness of having every unit have an assignment (or a weeks subject) focussed on indigenous Australian issues, but no actual resources from indigenous Australians. not kidding - I have not seen *one*, but it's a requirement to cover this in every semester. it all feels a bit pointless if I can't name one indigenous scholar we've learned about in class.
there *are* a lot of good things, obvs. my teachers have mostly been pretty open minded and passionate, but Christ. at least mention Spielrein's name one time. fuck
