I'm still thinking about Pokemon Horizons 89. I mean. Pokemon's anime just did something for the first time. Something it could never done before because it never could have been allowed to do that. Pokemon Horizons is allowed to be traumatizing.

Not that nothing traumatizing never happened to any Pokemon characters including ash before, or that death was a huge taboo bc the ghost type literally exists, but there is a BIG difference between an episode about grief due to losing a loved one to age or illness vs. a tragic accident in front of the protagonists eyes. Or vaguely alluded to neglect/trauma played for laughs. It's not about what happened so much as the impact of the event on the story going forward.

And before you say Ash has died, or that Lucario died, or Friede isn't dead, there's a big difference between the death of a character we just met, or that dies in backstory, or is brought to life right after (and also the movies just get a bit darker in general) than a character who has appeared in a majority of episodes so far and is close to the main cast. Pokemon just killed off a main supporting character. A member of the main cast. And not from something like old age, but a young healthy man. Now I don't think Friede is actually dead ofc. They would never.

But the characters do.

For a year. At least.

They're letting the characters marinate in that devastating loss.

And even if we the audience find out Friede is alive in a couple weeks, they still let his fate hang in the air for several weeks. And even if we the audience find out his fate, it will likely will still be some time yet before the characters do and their characters going forward are going to be informed by this trauma in a way that Ash never could be. Because Ash couldn't change. So anything bad that happened to him had to be something that couldn't directly, tangibly affect him going forward. Things that could be pushed into the background and ignored by the writers. The writers can't ignore Friede's death, he's too central to the plot, the kids growth up until this point and the seasons iconography. The plot is going to have to completely pivot around this event.

Like yes we are getting a Time Skip, and that is HUGE for Pokemon. But that Time Skip deeply tied to Friede's fate. The time skip is a whole year where the characters have been pulled away from the plot because of the loss of Friede, the 6 heroes, and the framing of the Rising Volt Tacklers as the villains by Spinel.

So it's kind of a big deal to me is that they just functionally killed 3 people (and a Charizard) in one episode. Two of these are definitely permanently dead. One of whom was a member of the main supporting cast. Again, its not that people (villains mostly) haven't occasionally died. The point isn't that they're dead per se, but that their absence has radically changed the direction of the story. They've traumatized those kids and there's no going back. "Roy forced to grow up", "Liko is depressed".

The kids post time skip will not be the same as before, and them witnessing their mentors supposed death is going to be the reason why. Like I don't think the show is suddenly going to be depressing either, that's where the year timeskip comes, in so the loss is less raw. But still.

Friede isn't quite a main character but still they "killed" A MAIN CHARACTER OFF.

The irony of people stopping paying attention to the anime because Ash left, but Ash's departure opening the doors for the Pokemon anime to go wild is not lost on me.

also i couldn’t stop thinking about your tangled au it’s so clever! it got me thinking of an au of your au (if that’s presumptuous or annoying feel free to ignore this ask lol). but it always bugged me slightly in the original tangled that rapunzel could remember stuff from when she was a baby bc babies can’t do that lol (obv she also has magic glowing hair so suspension of disbelief and all). but what if dick was actually older when slade (or court of owls tbh take your pick) kidnapped him? like he came under bruce’s care just like in canon after his parents died, and was around long enough to become brothers with jason, and tim had just been adopted when dick and bruce have a fight and dick storms off. not as bad as comics and bruce doesn’t kick him out bc he’s not an ass lol, but maybe dick wants to do more with his powers and bruce is overprotective, so dick storms out fully intending to come back, but slade has been watching him and takes this chance to kidnap him. and when bruce goes looking for him all he finds is a bloodstain and no dick.

and obviously dick is very keen on escaping the creepy dude who’s kidnapped him, but slade brings him to the basement of the tower and begins to torture/brainwash him sort of like the apprentice arc. and over time bc slade sucks and is good at the whole brainwashing thing, dick slowly looses his memories and eventually can’t remember a life outside of the tower at all. and he continues to grow up in the tower with slade as his “father” and he always has this sense that something isn’t quite right, but he can’t put his finger on it. like he has all these weird torture-like scars that he can’t remember getting, but slade tells him that it was from when he was young and before slade rescued him, and that’s why the world is so scary and dangerous and he has to stay in the tower where slade can protect him. and ofc he does bc slade loves him and wouldn’t lie to him right? and he doesn’t know why the name richard doesn’t fit him quite right, or why his heart races when slade appears unexpectedly (that’s how love works right?). but he stays in the tower like he’s supposed to until wally and roy show up.

and slowly after traveling with them he begins to get weird flashes of both painful and good memories, and strange sensations of deja vue. while meanwhile bruce is still all brooding and mourning bc it was his fight that led dick to run away. and added angst is that jason and tim actually remember and miss dick, even though tim had just started to get to know him. and damian is angsty bc he’s the only one never to have met dick (handwavy on the ages just like dc lol). meanwhile the kingdom still remembers and mourns the charismatic adorable prince that they lost.

and then when slade eventually catches up to and captures wally and roy, dick offers to give himself up and promises never to escape if slade spares them. and it’s extra sad bc he finally remembers what he’d be giving up. he remembers bruce and alfred and his brothers, and he remembers all the trauma slade put him through, and he’s willing to go through it all again to save wally and roy (bc is it really dick grayson if he isn’t super self sacrificing lol). and ofc it eventually ends happily and dick is delighted to go back to his family with his new friends and see his old brothers and meet his new brother all with a new haircut.

but yeah overall your au wormed its way into my brain and i couldn’t stop thinking about it lol, it’s so good!!!!

And OMG, this is amazing! Beautifully written, yes, absolutely love all the details, especially Slade's and Dick's relationship in all this. I've actually thought about him being taken later on so Tim and Jason would also remember Dick. But I think I started overthinking everything and made it way too complicated (I think I wrote about 20 pages of notes and stuff, I kinda got lost in them. I was/am pretty obsessed with this AU), so I just reeled back a bit and stayed close to the plot. It also simplifies things; I don’t have to rewrite the whole story, which, with my overthinking skills, would take forever. 💀

And that part with Slade making Dick forget who he was is great. I kept the whole AU pretty open with some stuff for imagination. My running idea at the moment is that he got sick when he was 8, so Bruce found the flower, and later Slade kidnapped him, making him forget everything and thinking Slade is his father.

But yeah, OMG, this is awesome. I totally love it. I tried to make it as detailed as possible story-wise, but at the same time, I really needed to limit myself to finish fast because I was scared I would lose interest or don’t have the patience haha But Now I’m kinda even more excited about how people will react to the next chapters. 👀

by the way this is not gonna do the subject NEARLY enough justice BUT i do really wish there was more keeley appreciation in the main tags... like not only is she an Extremely explicit parallel for ted, but she's also at the heart of SO much of the show's themes - and you'd never know it from reading most of the meta that goes around!

okay, so like, in no particular order, here some of the criminally underrated + under-explored things we know abt keeley jones:

she has an almost identical social strategy to ted: being earnestly, and oftentimes defiantly herself, regardless of what assumptions it pushes other people to make abt her (i.e.: her description in the pilot, 'used to having her book judged by its cover'). and then, in spite of the ppl around her belittling her/writing her off, she STILL approaches them w genuine intent to connect + get to know them.

i think it was an EXTREMELY deliberate choice in episode 3 for both keeley and ted to give rebecca 'a compliment she's never heard before'. they're not merely skating by on small talk or doing the bare minimum to show their appreciation for killing the photo (which rebecca would be prepared for), they're subverting her expectations by going for genuine (if bemusing) compliments.

then ofc w keeley's s3 arc, you can see how she's trying (and slowly succeeding, judging by that nervous worker guy's attempts to start joking around with her) to get her PR firm's culture to the same, easy-going, more-friends-than-coworkers vibe of richmond. she even specifically asks ted for advice (and, again, i think its relevant that the advice he gives refers to his most effective team building moment - the ghost banishing ceremony). it's very important to her that ppl feel comfortable in her presence, and we can see her getting genuinely distressed whenever she struggles with this.

she says EXPLICITLY in that one exchange w sassy + rebecca that she freaks out whenever she thinks she's being abandoned - she delivers it like a joke, but she's visibly off-kilter and nervous while she says it, apparently still coming down from the anxiety of thinking she'd been ditched. and again, after the gala when she goes to (presmably) get back together with jamie, she says outright that she really struggles to ever break up with people - even people she's no longer interested in, like jamie! - because she second guesses her own judgement so much. on an adjacent note, imo the melt down she has when roy was crowding her was only as abrupt + extreme as it was because she had been repressing her feelings about it for so long. which is SO interesting in the context of her being one of the most upfront and outspoken characters in the show!!!! like. she literally contains multitudes!

and, also, while i do think there's some genuine critical analysis to be done abt the normalisation of what is, essentially, sexual harassment at richmond (it's... extremely uncomfortable to go on such a long tangent about how attractive a stranger's boobs are, even if ur also a woman), i think keeley's active flirtation + general horny-on-main behaviour is ALSO extremely under-explored. bc, in the context of her being a WAG, and also a model, keeley recieves completely unprompted + unwarranted comments abt her body all day every day. when sassy told her that her ex-husband used to masturbate to her photos, she's hardly shell shocked. it's pretty clear that that's something she's used to being known for, and being told about in gratuitous detail. in this context, you can really see how the way she leans in to flirtation, and talking about sex and the hotness of various ppl around her (ie: her entrance in the pilot, making a show + joke out of how she must Obviously want to see all of the footballers naked), is her way of pushing back against the way others don't respect HER boundaries. ie: 'if my body's fair game for everyone to talk about + sexualise, so is theirs!'. it's an extremely interesting coping mechanism, especially in the context of it leading to her oftentimes perpetuating the cycle of harassment herself. and then there's also how the locker room culture OF richmond involves a significant amt of talking about sex, past partners, etc - since she spends so much time in that environment, you can pretty clearly see how that'd influence her decision to go with the current, rather than against.

AND OFC. HOW could i get this far w/o talking about the sheer narrative weight that's given to her relationship with rebecca!!! not only is she arguably the first character to befriend rebecca (beating ted out by several episodes, at least by my count), she is ALSO the reason that rebecca ever tells ted the truth ('it would change how i feel about you'!!!!!!! AGH!!!!), and honestly i think keeley's disappointment in her is what leads her to finally accept that. sabotaging richmond is a cruel thing to do and she doesn't want to do it anymore! like. keeley's unabashed admiration of + love for rebecca, and rebecca's eventual reciprocation is quite literally the driving force for both of their arcs ('thank you for teaching this panda how to be a lion'!!!!!) and i just!!! i care them!!!!!!!!!!!!

tldr; keeley jones is a blorbo of absolutely apocalyptic proportions PLEASE let her into ur heart the next time ur writing analysis + meta....

So with Covenant of Water my gripe is mainly that I just don’t like it hahaha, nothing particularly academic. I think it goes too ham on the exoticised exceptionalism re: ✨ the backwaters ✨ but instead of making a point with it (eg. Roy does the exceptionalism stuff too but imo with her it works pretty well for the most part bc she’s clearly conscious of it) even if about the individual story, not even a national point or whatever, it’s just very… travelogue.

Which is fine because it was clearly written for an audience unfamiliar with Kerala and I know that’s a difficult one, but when the whole book is just that sort of thing, navel-gazing to the point of nursery rhyming, it got grating. And that plus the overly melancholic migratory trajectory tracing, except instead of doing something interesting and looking at, say, Kerala-Gulf migration and the various shades of it, it does the same tired UK/US medical-professional thing… it actually had a really interesting narrative with the “medical issue” plotline but it was just, er, coated in wank.

With Roy, I’m honestly a fan of her stylistically speaking, I really love maximalist prose (too much I’d say…), she did some deliciously nasty things with language… but yes the casteist elements of what is ostensibly an anticaste novel was eyetwitchy to me. Mainly how Velutha is written, actually, that explicit fetishisation, writing of him like the divine incarnate, he and his family’s privileged, primal “understanding” of nature, the “noble savage” etc — and while it would have been perfectly fine and effective to describe him like that when viewed through Ammu’s perspective to show the impact of caste on her own gaze, it’s just a constant refrain presented either through omnescient or child-Rahel’s perspective… had it even been adult Rahel, I’d be like yeah totally fair, but it wasn’t, so it just sounds uncomfortably like the authorial voice doing it rather than narratorial.

The “god of small things” is, of course, Ammu’s view of him, but it is also present in descriptions of him that has nothing to do with Ammu or her gaze. It’s definitely not a purely-Roy problem ofc, most UC writers writing Dalit characters fall into the same hole… Roy does have a general tendency to do this though, especially with Dalit men of a certain age, even beyond GoST - if it didn’t rear its head so blatantly in Walking With the Comrades as well, I’d not have been so icked about its presence here, especially as she was quite young when GoST was published, but alas…

Other thing is obviously the police’s treatment of Velutha showcased purely through the impact it has on the Ayemenem family. This too, presented uncritically aside from the “bad” or explicitly casteist characters being dicks about it. The extreme level of brutality is not my issue of course, it’s relatively realistic, but rather that being used as a not-very-effective literary tool to showcase the arm of the state acting as per the wishes of a regionally powerful family + in the aftermath of the death of a young white girl. All these elements just had me thinking about Velutha as a figure nakedly brutalised for the sake of showcasing brutality — trying to do too many things at once and so doing very little at the end. I guess the most straightforward way I’d put it would be that I felt like the novel would have ended and read very similarly had the death-in-custody not happened (but all the other “transgressions”, including Sophie’s death, had).

I think again about the real life case that most literary depictions of anti-left police brutality in Kerala, including this one, tends to reference in some way or the other (hell my fic has a direct reference) because it was so stark in cultural memory - as in Comrade Rajan’s torture and death in the custody of the Kerala Police during the Emergency. Rajan’s case, however, was so memorable and tragic not because of what the police did to him (for there were Rajans in every police station across the country) but rather because of how his father went all the way to the President to find out what happened to his son, etc.

And what I thought Roy did badly by choosing to parallel elements of said case and transpose it directly into a caste context + 1969 context without changing any other details, was that it simply becomes about this rootless, free-flying forgotten figure spurned by even his family, who after his “transgression” had no connection to the land except through Ammu’s family, and the “he leaves no footprints” thing to me seemed a bit overdone halfway through the novel when it starts to become a little “he leaves no footprints anywhere EXCEPT IN MY BOOK”.

Because the thing with the Rajan case was that Rajan was very upper caste and his family very educated even if not wealthy, he was a college/student activist at one of the best colleges in the state at the time — those elements are removed entirely when it comes to adapting his story for Velutha’s, and again presents anti-caste brutality in isolation, viewed solely through the lens of an upper caste family’s experience of it…

My last issue is honestly an unfair nitpick because I’m certain Roy had no idea re: how globally popular the book would end up being when she wrote it, but it’s mainly the lack of contextualisation of the national political theatre. Everything she says about the CPIM of the 1960s is absolutely right, as is everything she says about the state’s ideological superiority complex, same with everything she says about the mindset of Old Syrian Christian Families who are Communist “in name but not nature”. But the hyperlocal setting meant that the Party and its people were not showcased as a part of what was in its entirety a rotting national fabric, but rather a problem specific to the Kerala context and the Communist context — her understandable and correct derision towards the CPIM of the period I think would have been more effective when placed in a national framework for the reader not familiar with South Indian politics…

however again, I don’t fault her for this as the book obviously was a very surprise win on the Booker stage and was not exactly written with that global audience in mind. But yes in general I think it lessens the effectiveness of her Kerala-exceptionalism, which she uses as a tool very well in general, to present it as so exceptionalist that the Indira-shadow on the arms of the state that was incredibly present in 1969 to be bypassed almost entirely…

I’m being a bit wanky here ngl, I’ve met her a couple times and she’s very nice, and I do genuinely like her style and work in general, I just think there are Certain Issues however where she’s treated as somewhat of an authority figure when she very much isn’t. And a lot of that’s less to do with her tbh and more her being put on that Mouthpiece of India pedestal by the Anglophone lit world for a while, because other than the Booker judges irritation/controversy about her win, she was very palatable to that specific group in several ways, many of which were beyond her control, eg the way she’d looked, the way she spoke, her Hindi+Bengali upbringing and fluency meaning she was appealing to that crowd as well…

I am so sure this sounds SUPER incoherent 😭😭😭 but hopefully it makes a little sense? I think this also (and I am in no means calling my silly little fic a work of Literature, it’s honestly more of a fever dream plus diary from hell) goes some way to explaining some of the choices in said story as well

Wrath as a Fuchsia is Completely Correct but I think specifically he’d be a human/troll hybrid living among the humans so he wouldn’t LOOK like a troll in any obvious way. Derse dreamer obviously. wrath kind of bothers everybody equally- which isn’t saying much, bc he doesn’t talk to everyone much at all- but he does take note of ling and lanfan for a little while. also is the one to get winry involved in the session- she’d been kept in the dark about what was happening “for her own safety.” no one is happy about this.

Pride as a violet blooded seadweller is also correct imo. pride trolls riza (and sometimes ed, but rarely), and father provides pride with a human disguise, somehow.

Lust would be a seadweller imo? i cant see her as a purple blood. obviously not all purps are clowncore but like... idk, it just feels more correct for them both to be seadwellers. but purple blood is fine. theyre both derse dreamers too, again obviously. lust trolls roy.

envy is a mutant, specifically a lime blood, partially because i think its funny but also because i think it makes sense for him. but this is a Secret that only father knows. envy instead masquerades as an olive blooded troll. limes were said to have special powers, so in his case im taking that as his shapeshifting. he’s also a dual dreamer! he starts off bothering ed, but eventually becomes mei’s “patron” troll. mei does not like listening to his whinging. he is so annoying

sloth is an indigo blood, same as wecansexy’s, and starts the game w/ his prospit dreaming self dead, killed by pride to dissuade sloth from sleeping and to keep him working on whatever their plans are in this au. sloth talks to no one. it’s too much of a pain.

gluttony is a bronze blood, and a prospit dreamer. gluttony tries to talk to al and at some pt they’re forced to work together, but y’know. once he lets the cannibalism slip (which is quick, bc gluttony is not smart). al kind of doesn’t want to speak to him.

as for an au where roman fires reader, she'd definitely not take him seriously at first. maybe laugh and tell roman to stop joking around but then does a double take when she realizes he's being forreal </3 roman also tries to alleviate the guilt he feels by repeatedly saying it was logan's decision, not his (don't blame the messenger and whatnot) but reader would be v hurt nonetheless. he'd start spouting out bs like, "i'm doing you a fucking favor, it's for the best, i'm putting the company's interests first, etc." from then, reader would grow furious and tells roman that if he fires her then whatever it was that they had between them would be over. roman, being roman, tells her they never stood a chance in the first place (he doesn't actually believe this, he's just swept up in the argument).

everyone's surprised / shocked when they hear she's been sacked, as she's so close to the family without acc being on the board and also has such a vital role keeping the company afloat. waystar itself would have a terrible adjusting period bcs they really underestimated just how much reader did for them (esp the small things that accumulated in her absence).

she leaves the company upset and bitter at first, but eventually realizes that she can finally live her own life and do what she wants to do without the constraints of the company / the roy family / her own absent parents. reporters are still constantly swarming her, asking her what happened, why she got fired, if she has any plans on going back, etc.

as for her relationship with roman, i can see them reconciliating eventually after a month or two because roman misses her like air and he fucking hates being in his dog cage the company without her there. would spam text her a million times one random day until she finally responds and would demand that she come to a fancy restaurant (he'll pay ofc, he's assumed she's gone totally broke now that she's not working w him), and they meet again and things just fall into place with the two of them :( reader is still pretty angry and hasn't forgiven roman yet, but she's missed him a lot too and couldn't ever permanently estrange herself from roman. as for the other siblings, reader wouldn't really keep in contact with shiv and kendall without roman in the equation, but she still gets check-up texts from connor, which she would briefly but fondly respond to </3

in this au, reader & roman wouldn't romantically get together probably until after the events of season four. they're terribly tragic soulmates in every universe i'm afraid !!

(Really long ask ahead i’m sorry!) I think your thoughts on dick and his similarities vs differences to bruce are so interesting! Personally i’m wondering how much of NTT played an influence on this kind of characterization bc i’ve never fully finished ntt but i read like nearly all the pre-80s batman 1940 issues lol and dick very much was portrayed as more idealistic than bruce in some ways while more no-nonsense (? For lack of better word) in other ways, like when it comes to batman easing up a little on selina for romance reasons LOL. Though ofc dick totally turns into - well, a dick - in team books, as i grow older i find myself far more compelled by a potential story of an 18 yr old who seemed to have the whole weight of the world on his shoulders (by his own perception) and breaking under his own impractically strong sense of duty and sky-high expectations for others, then realizing as he grows older that it doesn’t have to be that way esp after seeing the perspectives of characters like kory, wally, joey, roy, etc. Like personally as someone who never really had a huge interest in NTT anyway, i’m surprised at how desperately people want to hold on to the characterization of dick when he was 18-19 and never letting him grow past that, like it’s so difficult for me to believe that at age 25 he would be the same uptight controlling kid that he was at 19. Maybe i’m biased though bc i was like one of those insufferable INTJ internet stereotypes as a teenager, and while that worldview did bring me achievements i’m proud of like the fact that i’m in med school rn studying what i love, i still know that at age 22 i have changed SO much from when i was 18 and i can’t imagine any reasonably mature or normally-functioning person (let alone someone high-functioning like dick) not doing the same lol. Especially since dick is the kind of person who would literally die if he’s not constantly growing and evolving past his faults bc of his insufferable perfectionism, idk how he’d be willfully blind to the negative effects of his worldview in early NTT and refuse to grow from there. oh i absolutely agree! i cannot tell you how many times i think about the person i was a couple years ago and who i am now like i cringe so much omg.. maturity is an ever persistent process even if we don't recognize its effects immediately and it absolutely is crazy to think that anyone would remain in such a static state of mind for several years on end. esp when like you said dick is someone who wants to be better! so despite his several hypocrisies it is nonetheless in his best interests to look internally and analyze and evolve. and i feel like that very much could have happened had there been any actual segue between dick's breakup with kory and his re-entry into the batfam. i don't think there was much of a connection between these two sets of writers at all and so what you got is what felt like two very distinct parts of dick's life that didn't necessarily reveal a bridge point. so it's not entirely unrealistic that dick may grow to be the person (at least to some extent) that bat canon portrayed him to be in the years that followed but i certainly think as it stands it felt unearned and like all of his issues explored in ntt were conveniently swept to the side without any semblance of closure (albeit i do think some of these issues are addressed in outsiders '03 but in that dickheaded way that winick explores things generally. so i'm not sure it's the kind of closure people actually want). it's very sad and ig that's what people cling to more than anything. it's not that they're opposed to him growing to be a better person but that they're opposed to a version of dick who feels like he sprung out of nothing

Jamie still does not know what trouple means.Bam! News of possible transfer for sam! Dani assures Sam he loves him. This is the first time he has used the word. Sam loves him back. But is scared he is only saying it bc he's scared of Sam leaving. He says he must think, ominously, like a hallmark white girl.

But then. Jamie and Sam talk. It is an accident and also, bc it would be good for the plot. Sam asks Jamie what he thinks abt him transferring. Jamie blanks replies that he's one of the best players at Richmond so on one hand, him leaving would be really bad for the team. On another hand, he's one of the best guys Jamie knows, so he also wants the best for him, so he'd wish him luck if the transfer is what he wanted. He also asks what Dani thinks of it. Sam says the truth, which is that Dani isn't talking about it bc he doesn't want to influence his decision. (Its also cause he's a dumbaas but whatever) Sam is touched. Dani is panicking. Jamie...still does not know what trouple means. (Sorry that line only gets better each time I use it) long story short, dani comes to Sam's place, confesses that he doesn't want Sam to go, but he loves him, so he'll support it if Sam needs to, he's crying, Sam cries a little, they fuck. Sam turns it down, ofc. They win the game!! Jamie gives dani the ball, Sam thinks maybe he could fall in love with this boy, Dani realizes he already has and that, my friend, is a pre-sam/jamie/dani fic in a nutshell.
