Borrowed Time (WIP Ask game)

ohhh boy this behemoth will never see the light of day but I'm so happy you asked about this one bc as complicated as it is I love thinking and talking about it lol

so this was meant to be a fix-it for the ending of the star trek novelverse. some important background info: the coda trilogy wrapped up the novelverse basically by retroactively wiping that timeline from existence to avert a threat to the entire multiverse, because apparently with all the new shows and tie-in novels people thought it would be too confusing to also keep the novelverse books going. well that made me pissed as hell so I wrote this short fic, The Forgotten Splinter, bringing back one of my favorite and criminally underused characters, Riker and Troi's daughter Tasha, and Borrowed Time was meant to be a follow up to that.

I have a partial outline complete with chapter titles and extensive notes on what I wanted to happen, but at some point the idea just got too complicated and overwhelming for me to contemplate lol. the short of it is that Tasha gets her memories back from the First Splinter Timeline as well as the other timeline branches that were erased, and she and the gang work together to restore that timeline while also eliminating the threat from the Devidians.

I ended up not writing very much of it except for a list of chapter titles (in rough chronological order) and one passage:

“The First Splinter Timeline.” Tasha laughed bitterly. “You have no idea what we did for you. What we sacrificed… and this timeline? This timeline is shit! Your version of the Federation literally banned an entire class of life-forms, and didn’t even bother to make an exception when the child of two Starfleet heroes’ life was at stake!” The Troi-Rikers visibly blanched. “And you!” Tasha exclaimed, swiveling toward Picard. “You’re a bloody admiral! Whatever happened to ‘don’t let them promote you, don’t let them transfer you, don’t let them do anything that takes you off the bridge of that ship, because while you’re there, you can make a difference’?” She paused to take a deep breath. “And why didn’t you tell Beverly you love her? She wanted you to go after her, fight for her, not let her go!” Picard was stunned speechless. Tasha continued her rant unabated. “Our timeline wasn’t perfect, but it was better than this! What kind of multiverse is this, where the timeline in which things go mostly right has to be erased from causation, while this shit timeline with all the unnecessary angst and dramatic tension gets to live on? It’s not fair, dammit!” By this point Tasha was nearly hysterical, and the tears poured in a seemingly endless flood down her cheeks. The multiple timelines’ worth of trauma she had been suppressing for six years had finally burst forth from the dam of her subconscious. Deanna’s soul cried out in pure and complete empathy. She had entertained similar thoughts ever since Thad’s diagnosis. Why did their timeline have to be the one where he died? The whole thing had made absolutely no sense, as if whoever was writing the story of their lives got a kick out of torturing their characters.

I came up with this after Picard season one aired but before two and three, so I didn't incorporate any of that into this idea lol, anyway I had some vague notion that this would be the first installment of an epic trilogy, but almost no one read my novelverse fic when I was actively writing and posting about it so I don't really have much motivation to make it happen

Cher probably has the backstory I have the most Difficult time deciding what I want for it, so it’ll be kinda vague on that part</3. I DO know that she probably came out when she was like 8-10, and started to transition when she was in high school ish. Probably not rlly medically but at least socially. She’s the type where she never really felt like a boy at all. And an Idea I had for her backstory (that I’m still actually not solid on), is that her parents were really neglectful, and instead of being dismissive they more just outright ignored her, so she was kind of just left to her own world as a child. She’s a very out and proud trans woman, which in part is a reflection of her transformation from meek and ignored child, to whatever the fuck was going on with the hex Hellcat, to someone who’s confident and solid in doing what she loves and presenting herself how she likes, regardless of any anxieties she may still have!

Happy 28th Birthday to the great Serena’s Song!

Serena was an absolute beast of a racehorse back in the 90s. She ran 38 times from 2 to 4, with 18 victories and 14 other top 3 finishes.

At 2 she won the G2 Landaluce Stakes, G1 Oakleaf (now the Chandelier) and G1 Starlet. She was beaten just a head by Flanders in the 1994 Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies and was beaten only 1/2 length by future Big Cap winner Mr. Purple in the G2 Hollywood Juvenile Champion Stakes against the boys. In 10 races at 2 she was worse than 4th only once, and that was in her debut.

Serena’s Song took things to another level as a 3yr old.

She hit the ground running in January, reeling off 4 straight victories in the G3 Santa Ynez, G1 Las Virgenes, G1 Santa Anita Oaks, and then left California and the girls behind to dominate Tejano Run in the G2 Jim Beam (now the Jeff Ruby Steaks) at Turfway. After besting the boys in a prep, Serena went to the Kentucky Derby as the favorite but faded after setting a hot, pressured pace. She came right back to win the G2 Black-Eyed Susan on Preakness Day and followed that up with a Belmont Day win in the G1 Mother Goose. After a runner-up finish in the G1 CCA Oaks, she became the first filly to win the G1 Haskell, then turned around and beat the girls again in the G1 Gazelle. She was beaten by Mariah’s Storm (Giant’s Causeway’s dam) in her first try against older horses, but came back to beat older mares in the G1 Beldame. She capped an amazing 13 race year with an anticlimactic 5th in the G1 BC Distaff.

Serena’s Song didn’t win a lot at 4, but her campaign was one of the most ambitious you’ll ever see for a modern 4yr old filly. She kicked it off with a pair of G1 wins in the Santa Monica and Santa Maria, but her only other wins of her 15 race season came much later in the G3 Pimlico Distaff (now the Allaire DuPont Distaff), G3 Fleur De Lis, and G1 Hempstead (now the Ogden Phipps). But in between those wins she was 2nd or 3rd in the G1 Apple Blossom, G2 Louisville Breeders Cup Handicap (now the La Troienne), G1 Vanity, G1 Whitney, G1 Phillip H. Iselin, G1 Ruffian, G1 Beldame, G1 BC Distaff, and G2 Churchill Downs Distaff. Her lone off the board finish was a 7th behind her old rival Mr. Purple in the G1 Santa Anita Handicap.

Serena’s Song was a beast of a horse. Not only was she constantly competitive against the best horses - male or female - for for 3 years of racing, she went more than a month between races exactly once in her entire career. She was the champion 3yo filly of 1995.

But that’s not all. After retiring from her Hall of Fame racing career, Serena’s Song turned out to be a very good broodmare. She produced 9 winners from 12 foals, including graded stakes winners: Grand Reward, Harlington, Schramsberg, and Sophisticat.

The best of her sons at stud was Harlington, the sire of Wavell Avenue.

The most influential of her daughter so far is Serena’s Tune. Serena’s Tune had only 4 foals before dying, but one of those was Serena’s Cat. Serena’s Cat was a stakes winner who would go on to produce G1 winner and champion older male Honor Code, along with other stakes winners.
